The right time and place for your paint finish
P
aint finish may be the last thing you think of when it comes to finding the right paint. Usually choosing a color is the first thing that comes to mind. After flipping through numerous fan decks, comparing strips of paint chips, and applying test swatch after test swatch, you’ve finally decided on the perfect shade. But the decisions don’t stop there—you will also need to consider the paint finish. Finishes may go by different names depending on the paint brand, but there are basically three standard types: Flat/matte, eggshell/satin, and semigloss/high-gloss—sometimes referred to as pearl. Each finish has a different level of shine and reflects light differently. You might be tempted to grab some
eggshell and call it a day, but choosing the correct finish can make a big difference in the look of your space and, how easy it is to clean. For that reason, some finishes are also better suited for certain high-traffic areas or rooms frequented by youngsters, such as family rooms, and kids’ bedrooms.
Home tips
Flat and Matte
Providing a simple smooth appearance, flat paint is recommended. This is because it doesn’t reflect light directly, meaning imperfections in walls and ceilings are much less noticeable. Flat paint will work best in low-traffic areas, such as the master bedroom, a study, or a formal living room.
Eggshell and Satin
Eggshell or low-luster, finishes are so named because the slight sheen they provide is similar in feel to the surface of an egg. Unlike flat paint, eggshell bounces light around the room while resisting everyday stains and scratches. Select a satin finish for
a slightly more reflective look. Satin offers more durability, making it a great finish for family rooms and children’s rooms.
Semigloss and High-Gloss
Bright and shiny, these finishes are beautiful, but they reveal every flaw on your walls. Experts therefore recommend using these finishes to highlight smaller details, such as trim, railings, shutters, or moldings. These glossy hues are also great for giving wood furniture a new lease on life. Because they are resistant to rust, dirt, and stains, semigloss is an ideal choice for busy baths and kitchens.
DIY GARDENING Start with easy plants Growing vegetables is a fun introduction to gardening. They don’t take as long to grow, so if you make a mistake you won’t have wasted months and months of your time.
#LANDSCAPING
Create bold contrasts
One of the easiest and most basic landscaping ideas is to create contrasts. Consider colour: if you paired rich burgundy-purple with chartreuse, the gold hues seem to become brighter and the purple tones can appear richer and darker. Used together, colours are much more effective than when used alone.

BY WILLIAM KASOBA
K
ampala City Council Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) kick off their continental adventure tomorrow (Friday) away in Madagascar as they face CNaPS SPORT in the first leg of the preliminary round of the 2018 Caf Champions League. While last year’s foray onto the continent was a tale of heroic failure, things appear to have changed so significantly in a period of less than a year. After giving then defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns a run for their money before they were knocked out 3-2 on aggregate, the Ugandan champions would go on to challenge continental giants like Club Africain throughout the group stages of the Caf second tier competitionthe Confederation Cup before failing at the last hurdle as they were eliminated on the final day of Group A action. The Kasasiro boys collected an impressive nine points from their six games, and following the 4-0 reverse against Club Africain in their last game, head coach Mike Mutebi assured media that he and the boys had picked valuable lessons picked ahead of the 2018 Champions League. Yet, with so much changing so fast over the past six months, this brings us to
the question: can KCCA FC repeat or surpass last year’s achievements? With the mass exodus that has happened at the club only months after attaining these milestones, it is a worrisome position for a club which had become Uganda’s model of doing things right over the last half a decade. Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Joseph Ochaya and Isaac Muleme are some of those who have left the club, with Derrick Nsibambi and goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan futures still hanging in the balance. Moses Magero, KCCA FC’s publicist, however says the club remains confident they have enough to meet or surpass the level they reached last year. “Technically, only our coaches can reveal that [how ready we are] but administratively we have made new talented recruits in this transfer and we are hopeful they will deliver. However, everyone must know that clubs do not only survive on individual players, it is a task of a team of players to accomplish the club targets.” Coach Mutebi mirrored Magero’s optimism, and was quick to downplay the impact of apparent unrest at his club ahead of the new continental campaign. “We are ready enough to face the challenge that’s in front of us. And we are preparing for the upcoming continental game and other competitions too. I have

“We are ready enough to face the challenge that’s in front of us. And we are preparing for the upcoming continental game and other competitions too. I have confidence in these boys to perform well...” confidence in these boys to perform well,” Mutebi explained before adding, “We brought in new players so as to get stronger and bring more hunger to the team. I am sure they are hungry for success and I am confident they can help us attain our goals.” Only time will tell if hunger can compensate for the inexperience in KCCA’s squad. At this point though, the signs look far from encouraging. After this weekend’s tie, KCCA FC will host CNaPS SPORT in a return leg scheduled to be played between February 16-18.
