State Minister for Lands Persis Namuganza says is living in fear after she allegedly received threats from ‘mafia’ who stated she has only three days to live. While addressing the media yesterday, the distressed minister said; “It’s too much! Should I disappear tomorrow, the public should know. She said her tormentor always mentioned her precise location.

More Ugandans have embraced condom use — Health minister

Stanbic Bank gives Uganda Cup Shs300m boost

Uganda celebrated International Condom Day on a positive note, after Health minister Dr. Jane Aceng revealed that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS has reduced to 6% from 7.3% after more people embraced the use of condoms. She noted that since the introduction of combined prevention measures, including free condom distribution, there has been an increase in the use of condoms among the population.

The FUFA Uganda Cup has obtained a title sponsorship deal worth Shs300m from Stanbic Bank. The deal will cater for prize money and other logistics which will assist in the organisation of the tournament for three years. The sponsorship comes as a huge boost to the Shs50m which had been allocated by Sports Broadcasting last month.

Agriculture I Demonstration

Museveni says he has the last laugh on drip irrigation BY OUR REPORTER

P

resident Yoweri Museveni has unveiled his first drip irrigation harvest from Kawumu demonstration farm in Luweero District and laughed at those who mocked him when he unveiled what the public perceived as an “archaic” irrigation method last year. Museveni bought 24 acres from Kawumu village in Makulubita Sub County to demonstrate to small-scale farmers on how to maximise profits, by using a few acres of land for various activities. On the farm, he initiated several activities including zero grazing, a fruit farm with mangos, pineapples, passion fruits and pawpaws. The model farm also has fish farming, coffee, matooke, mushrooms, and vegetables. URN reports that the President is implementing the use of drip irrigation, describing it as the cheapest and most efficient irrigation method that is manageable by any farmer desirous to address

the effects of drought and water shortage. President Museveni said that he to start the demonstration farm to serve as an agricultural learning centre after the government attempts to eradicate poverty in the region through modern agriculture failed to yield the desired results. But he faced strong criticism from the public citing lack of water and long distance to water sources. Others described drip irrigation as a primitive way of irrigation and asked the government to invest in irrigation schemes which can pump and supply water over large areas. Yesterday, Museveni took journalists to the farm to show how the crops have grown and the harvests that have been made after engaging in drip irrigation. These included about 400 coffee plants that had grown in a period of 12 months instead of the known eighteen months, harvests from banana plantations which were irrigated and mulched using local grass, two ponds that had

an estimated four tonnes of fish and a fruit garden from which he harvests 140 kilograms of passion fruits a week. The farm has 438 chickens which are already laying eggs and a mushroom garden. At every demonstration, garden workers estimated profits between Shs4m to 10m per season. “People laughed at my bottles, but I was demonstrating how poor people can farm. You know I am rich and can afford modern irrigation,” he said.

Matters of The Heart I Substitution

The side dishes that successfully by allan gumizamu

I

t is the week of love and as we celebrate Valentine’s, there are women who started off as side dishes but ended up ensnaring men who were already committed elsewhere to commit to them. Some might want to call them home wreckers but many of them see themselves as saving men from their former or other wives. The blame is not entirely on these women, as many married men have never stopped chasing more “skirts.” For some it is love and for others, as long as the man is financing basic needs, she remains in the picture and hatches a plan to become the main woman. Also, often times married men bad mouth their wives to their side dishes promising that it’s only a matter of time before they drop them. Then it becomes the side dish’s mission to remind the man to come good of their promises. Here are some famous side dishes who became main chicks. Magogo’s Dorah Dellah Sally She was the official side dish of FUFA president Moses Magogo until recently when she became the main woman. She officially introduced Magogo to her parents late last year. A while before the introduction ceremony, Dellah would accompany the Fufa President to several events including the 2016 World Cup in Brazil. Before long, tongues started wagging and to stop the rumour mill, Dellah confirmed on her social media platforms that Magogo was indeed her man. Magogo was married with three children before he got hitched to Dellah. However as a Muslim man, he still has two other slots.

Douglas Lwanga’s Lisa Linda

NBS TV’s Douglas Lwanga got married in 2010 at the age of 25. In 2014, online reports indicated that his marriage was on the verge of collapse after his wife started complaining about his closeness with Lisa Linda. He denied the allegation, shortly after Linda got pregnant and rumour had it that Douglas was the father of the baby. In 2016, Douglas’s official wife threw in the towel paving way for side dish Linda. Linda happily took over Douglas and she is now the main woman. The two have two children together.

Tom Kula and Pastor Imelda Namutebi

Cedric Babu’s DJ Karol

Cedric Babu’s marriage to Alison Gallagher the mother of his boys collapsed after DJ Karo (real name Carol Kisukye) emerged. Gallagher cried on social media calling Karo a home wrecker but Cedric and Karo ignored her antics making it official by visiting her parents in January. Karo started out as a DJ managed by Cedric’s Kinetic Management Group and she also used to run his organisation’s social media platforms under her M-Idea company. Very soon chemistry developed and they now live together in Naguru.

Pastor Imelda Namutebi is one of the richest and most influential pastors in the country with a multimillion dollar church complex in Lugala, several apartment buildings and a fleet of expensive cars. Pastor Namutebi got married to Tom Kula on February 14, 2003 at a highly hyped wedding held at Liberty Worship Center in Lugala. The wedding was followed by controversies that Kula was still entangled in an older relationship whereby Imelda used her power and money to lure the man to her side. Despite Kula being much younger than the pastor, the two have managed to maintain a stable marriage since then.

Traffic Police boss Norman Musinga

Norman Musinga and his wife Esther Kyinkuheire, exchanged vows at Namirembe Cathedral on September 17, 2010 and their marriage didn’t last long. In September 2016, Musinga filed for divorce from Kyinkuheire citing irreconcilable differences. In her defence, his wife accused him of running away with a side dish known as Racheal who he has a child with. The divorce case is still in court before Makindye magistrate but Norman lives in Rubaga with Racheal.

Vincent Sekatte and Catherine

CIID spokesman Vincent Sekatte held a secret Kukyala in Mutundwe last November at his new partner Catherine Nabunya’s parent’s home. Catherine works at BBS TV as a Crime Reporter and their “Kukyala” (traditional pre-wedding ceremony where the groom visits the home of the bride stating intentions to marry and set the timeline) was held under tight security to avoid a scenario where his first wife Halima would “disorganise” the kukyala.

However her pleas fell on the deaf ears of Ronnie and Maureen as the two went on with an introduction ceremony and are now living husband and wife.

Rwanda artistes to hold Mowzey Radio tribute next month

R

wanda was one of the first countries to appreciate the dynamic duo of Radio & Weasel when they broke through in 2007. The duo made several trips to Kigali where they were always treated like superstars. Some sections even claimed that the duo received so much love because Radio had his roots in that part of the continent! Well, while that rumour remains unconfirmed, it is at least public knowledge that Radio dated singer Lilian Mbabazi, a Ugandan of Rwandan origin and had two children with her. But even before the affair

with Lilian, the dynamic duo had serious admiration in Rwanda to an extent that a group of fans decided to start up the Goodlyfe- Rwanda group. The group consists of both Goodlyfe fans and Rwandan musicians who were only permitted into the group by Goodlyfe management. So it’s against that background that the Goodlyfe crew in Kigali decided to host a mega concert at which they will honour their fallen soldier. According to Uncle Austin (pictured) a leading Rwandan singer and radio personality, the event is scheduled for some time during the Easter weekend. Austin told us Weasel and manager Chagga gave them a go-ahead to organise the tribute concert, and confirmed all leading Rwandan musicians will perform at the event which will be held at the Amahooro stadium in Kigali.

Jamaican reggae star Anthony B, Bebe Cool and Maddox to headline first Kampala Reggae fest

T

he Reggae Fest is coming to our town. Yes, a new promotions company is organising the first ever reggae event of its kind at Legends rugby grounds come March 24. The Reagge Fest is an annual event that started in Jamaica, but spread and became even bigger in USA. The annual celebration is characterised by a full day of Caribbean music, food, crafts and plenty of irie to go around. The music menu is strictly reggae, dancehall and ragga. The Reggae Fest Kampala edition is happening next month and the organisers have confirmed Jamaican reggae star Keith Blair, aka Anthony B, as the headliner of the event. Also lined up to perform are leading local reggae artistes Bebe Cool and Maddox. Irene Ntale is the only female artiste that has been lined up for the event. Although not that popular among general music lovers in Uganda, Anthony B is a darling to reggae fans. The 41-year-old singer who dropped his first CD in 1996, is a member of the Rastafari movement and has released more than 20 CDs, 1,000 plus singles, and appears on hundreds of other albums.

ast week Kamwokyabased NBS TV unveiled their latest signing- Douglas Lwanga. The former NTV presenter had just announced his resignation from NTV the day before. Well, Douglas was immediately put on screen as a co-host of the new “KatchUp” a show that will air on NBS TV from 10pm to 11:30pm. However to the shock of many, Douglas was bundled with the curvaceous Anitah Fabiola and MC Isaac. Many of his fans didn’t hide their disappointment that Douglas who has built as name for being an excellent solo host, was being bundled up with other presenters. But it seems NBS TV management planned way ahead. We have it on good authority that the appearance over the weekend was sort of part of Douglas’ tour on NBS TV; otherwise starting next Monday February 19, Douglas is going to be co-hosting the After 5 show with MC Kats. According to reliable sources, the show has been extended from one hour to two hours; from 5-7pm. After 5 is an entertainment show that runs from Monday to Friday on NBS show. The show was originally created for another former NTV presenter MC Kats. Sources told us a few features are being added to the show to make it better. All the best Douglas and MC Kats.

that is by far the yardstick for musicians that command a certain level of respect and a classy fanbase. And we have heard that Rema is pulling out all stops to ensure that the show turns out a success. According to a source close to the singer, even before she starts rehearsals, Rema recently decided to hit the gym ahead of the show. The source told us Rema wants to have her body in extra perfect shape when she steps on stage next month. We learnt that Rema visits a gym in one of the leading hotels in town. However, we also learnt that Rema visits the gym at awkward hoursbetween 11am to 1pm because there is less human traffic at the facility at that time. Entry to the Banyabo concert is Shs100,000 per head while a table goes for Shs3m.

Tyler Himself announces arrival on Tula Wansi

2

017 seemed to be more of a year for the new entrants and fast into 2018, I see the status quo being maintained. Tyler Himself is one of the guys to look out for. He has a fresh vibe that tends towards Runtown’s. This is both musically and in person. One project from this ninja that particularly caught my eye is “Tula Wansi”.

TALKING MUSIC

Spice Dianah has been trending for saying she got 32 points, a second grade in A-Level during a TV interview, yet maximum A’Level points were 25 at the time she sat. She has since set the record straight about the gaffe saying she scored 14. At least she scored a first grade at her maiden concert held at Frontpage Namasuba over the weekend.

Song: Tula Wansi Singer: Tyler Himself Audio: Badi Video: Zyga Phyxx Reviewer: Trevor Tarem wa Wakastars: The fans favourite Anti-Kale.

Full house: There was only a front page to open.

Momma we made it: Spice Diana.

The audio The audio is an infusion of afro pop and dancehall produced and mastered at Badi Studios. The producer does a tremendous job replicating the sound god’s (Runtown’s producer) art for you can clearly detect it bit by bit especially with the instrumental. Tyler makes an effortless fusion of English, Luganda and Patois as he makes a spontaneous delivery of catchy lines, hooks, bars and a dope sing along chorus. “Tula Wansi” loosely translates to “sit down” in Luganda. He tells this girl to come sit down right next to him because as far as he is concerned, he is smitten by her body shape and how she drops it on the dancefloor.

The video The video is directed by Virtual Media’s Zyga Phyxx. The video is not exactly something I would expect from Zyga. The opening shot has Tyler receiving pizza from a delivery guy. Not the kind of shot I expected for a song with this kind of vibe especially one with a low budget. Other scenes include Tyler spitting lines on a set with four poorly arranged models. A poor replica of what Clarence Peters does with models on the “Mad 0ver You” set. This is a video that calls for a club scene with lots of booty dropping and skimpily clad girls with great bodies. We do not see that in this video. Tyler puts such a tremendous effort on the song but the videographer could have done better than this.

The matrix glasses have fast become a fashion favourite amongst fashionistas, bloggers, and style enthusiasts. The slimmed out glasses feature either a cat eye or oval shape and are available in various shades. And the best part is they will work on any outfit, especially if it’s one with a casual element to it. For instance, you can add this accessory to your bell bottom jeans and crop top look. You could also choose to have your glasses as the point of colour focus for the look, by having them in a popping shade like purple, orange or white. All you have to do us find a shape of these glasses that best suits your face structure, and you are good to go.

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? A watch and jeans. What is your worst buy ever? I once purchased a fur bag online. All I can say is not everything is the way it is online. What styling trick works for you all the time? Wearing blazers, waist belts and tucking in. It climaxes my look effortlessly. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Leather pants/trousers.

MUK TO PAY GOV'T SPONSORED STUDENTS ALLOWANCES THROUGH MOBILE MONEY

G

overnment sponsored students at Makerere are still exchanging bitter words with their leaders, with some planning to strike, after they were informed that their long awaited allowances will be channeled through mobile money. This money had always been sent to students’ bank accounts. However, according to the university bursar Augustine Tamale, the process has been changed to E-wallet (or suing mobile money) by the government. “We now use what we call the Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS) which requires one to register first and also have a Tax Identification Number (TIN) which our students do not have. So we have decided to use mobile money numbers to make it easy for students,” Tamale explained. But students under their umbrella body Makerere University Government Students Association (Mugosa) have already expressed their dissatisfaction with the new process. Most argue that today Friday, February 9 is the third week of the semester, a time they normally receive the allowances and chaging the system abruptly is like denying them their entitlement. “I think this is one way of delaying to pay our money. Sincerely we were expecting the

money on our accounts today and they are telling us to go and register our numbers? How will that work? Some of our numbers are not registered in our names,” said Ambrose Mugume. Every semester, government sponsored students receive money meant to cater for their meals and accomodation. Those who eat lunch from the university get about Shs 630,000 while those who do not take any meal get Shs 770,000. However, most students say that if this money is sent via mobile money, they will be charged highly, yet Tamale says they will not cater for the withdrawal charges. Most students are also worried about the fact that some of their lines are not registered in their names. The Mugosa President Patrick Sseremba has faced sharp criticism from students, with many accusing him of failure to inform them about the new development in time.

MUBS Beats Kyambogo, Makerere, UCU in University Debate Championship

M

akerere University Business School left Pearl Of Africa Hotel on Friday evening with all the bragging rights after beating their Makerere University counterparts to the National Debate Championship title. The event was organised by Mobinet, a fintech company under the theme of “Financial technology in Uganda” and it saw competition from 4 Universities. Mukono based Uganda Christian University (UCU) came second while Kyambogo finished 3rd and Makerere had a disappointing evening finishing last in the battle of ideologies. MUBS was represented by Walter Niwagaba, the founder of MUBS Debate Club president and former guild president aspirant, Katura Brandon the serving president and members Massa Kevin, Mugabi Median among other cheer leaders. A lot of prizes were given out which included laptops and phones for the teams with an all expense paid trip to Dubai awaiting the best debaters of the day from MUBS and UCU. Speaking to Niwagaba, the founder who also doubles as a 3rd year student at the Nakawa based affiliate says that MUBS has proved to be the best when it comes to debates over years and it was no surprise that they took the trophy home.

The number of government sponsored students in Makerere could not be readily established, but it is estimated that they over 2,000. The Dean of Students Cyriaco Kabagambe is yet to release an official document guiding students on how to register their numbers and also give a timeline for the process. By Journalism@Mak

F

inding fitness via the gym route requires both cash and commitment, but then a gym may not even be necessary if you want to stay fit and healthy! There are a few cost-free ways you could improve fitness, and here are four things you could try:

Use workout videos

There are probably millions of YouTube workout videos, and all you need is a decent data bundle to get them and get your fitness regime flagged off. There’s no need to get bored of the routines either – swap with your friends so your supply never runs out.

Get out and run, or walk

This involves some sacrifice, but what doesn’t? So here’s the drill; wake up very early and with

Cycling could be bad for your manhood

Four ways to keep fit, without the gym the roads still deserted and no boda boda to worry about, hit the tarmac and sweat a bit. If you can find a hill, that is even better. Have a repeat session after work, if your job affords you that luxury. If running is going to be too taxing for whichever reason, you could try walking instead.

Or stay in and do push-ups

Unlike the running option, push-ups give you a wonderful cost-free way to keep fit, and all this from the inside of your house. All you need is a room (or space with minimal distractions). If you can combine the running with push-ups, that is an even smarter idea.

Download a fitness app

With the world going all ‘appy with a deluge

of fitness apps popping up all over the place, you now have ready help with tracking your progress and the pursuit of different goals. Apps like Sworkit and 7 Minute Workout are great for squeezing in a quick session at home, and you don’t need anything but floor space to tone up with their personalised routines.

PARENTING The parent as a teacher/coach

S

ee your role as that of a teacher or coach to your children. Demonstrate in detail how you would like them to behave. Have them practice the behaviour, and give as much encouragement as constructive criticism. Rather than tell them what not to do, teach and show them what they should do. Try to see a situation the way your children do; listen carefully to them and try to form a mental picture of how it would look to them. Use descriptive praise when they do an assignment well and employ a soft but confident tone of voice to redirect them when they are upset. Very importantly, be a good listener: do not interrupt as they speak, and ask open ended questions rather than questions that can be answered with a yes or no. Lastly, look for gradual changes in behaviour. Don’t expect too much.

WHEN TO MOVE BEDROOM YOUR AFFAIR IN THE

Attention, all men! There are a few things you might need to know about cycling and, hmmm, erectile dysfunction.

For example... The fact that putting pressure on your genitals for too long—like while pressed against a bike seat—is not a great plan, so keep that in mind if you are keen on cycling.

relate Unlocking the matters of the heart

Long story If you have ever been on a long bike ride and your butt hurts when you get off, you probably wondered what all that pressure is doing to your junk. Well, so have doctors. A 2014 study into cycling and erectile dysfunction found no link between biking and cycling, according to The Washington Post. However, there is reason for concern if you are a hardcore cyclist. That same study found an increased risk of prostate cancer if you cycle a lot. And the long-term pressure against your pudendal nerve could cause damage resulting in a loss of sensation in your groin area.

That said... Cycling isn’t the worst thing to worry about in terms of preventing erectile dysfunction. Diet, stress and sleeping in your underwear can all play a factor.

H

ere’s the situation: You are on a promising first date with someone you are really into. The chemistry is off the hook, and she hasn’t done anything horrific like cry about her ex. In fact, things are going so well that you are the one that’s worried you might screw things up. At this point you are tempted to suggest you take things up a notch but you are wondering if the time is right, right? Figuring out the right time to have sex with someone new is never easy. There is no exact science or set amount of time to hold out that will guarantee that everything works out between the two of you—but there are some considerations to take when you are trying to decide if the time is actually right.

When you’ve had an incredible date

Yes, sex on a first date is a thing. Most women like to shy away from it, because they worry that they will be viewed as loose. But here is the thing, as you have probably been told before, if a man genuinely likes you and sleeps with you on the first date, it won’t stop him for sticking around. Likewise if all he wants is sex, he will still bolt after keeping around you for a year, as long as he’s got his sex.

When you connect on other levels

If you and your new man have gone out together on a few dates and you are fast running out of boxes to tick on your checklist—I mean you like everything about him and now you even share an opinion on who is more dramat-

ic between the Lord Mayor and Beti Kamya, then taking sex off the table is a great idea at this point because you can focus on making the relationship grow instead of trying to get totally blazed at the bar every weekend in the hope that the sex just follows somehow.

When important milestones are hit

Instead of putting a set number of dates or timeline on it, you could decide that sex will happen only if certain important milestones are hit, especially the kind which confirm that this is someone in it for the long haul — and these milestones could be an introduction or even something more basic, like a visit to each other’s families. The unserious ones usually don’t stick around for those.

TRENDS & IDEAS

Weddings through the ages

T

he 90s was the decade of wedding fashion transformation, with major changes in dress designs, a greater focus on makeup; especially red lipstick and a major revolution for hairstyles, brides and bridesmaids trends. Some of the outfits were indeed timeless, and today we take you back to the trends that rocked 90s weddings. The gowns Big shoulders and sleeves were a popular fashion back then. The gowns often in silk material were either layered, off-shoulder with very a well fitted neck and waistline; others had long trains and lace. Gowns then though not as intricate as we see today, were a big fashion statement for any bride.

Veils Veils were very important on the bride’s ensemble; this accessory was a creative piece through the addition of floral headbands, there was also the bridal veil hats trend, which later developed to tiaras in the late 90s.

Senyondo talks modern wedding photography

Gloves The wedding gloves were a musthave for bridesmaids, giving a classy look when you look back at some of the pictures. The gloves would either be lace or silk just like the bride’s gown.

J

oz Senyondo is a photographer who has been at it for more than 12 years. He is the proprietor of Devine Photography. He told us about wedding photography.

Makeup Makeup was never a necessity, it was always basic as long as the hair was well puffed and blown out. A little eye makeup and the bride was good to go.

What would you describe as the perfect wedding photograph? One that speaks out and tells a real story filled with emotions... could be a candid shot, could be an emotional moment, one that brings out the best of any given moment on that day. What should I look out for from a photographer if I want them to do my wedding photography? We are all different, but experience, creativity, style of shooting are the factors to consider. Find out if you can connect because that day is about the right moments. You obviously want those special moments captured not just posed for pictures. Why do wedding photographers insist on keeping the copyright of photographs; we tend to see them water marked. There are many copycats out there who download our work and use it as their own they build folios on other people’s work. Ugandans have a tendency of copying and usually ride on other people’s works... so we protect our work to avoid copycats and misuse. What would you describe as a fair price for a wedding photography job? The prices range between five and 12 million.

r. Magala Wilberforce Mubiru and wife Joanita Nabigavu Tenywa met at their local church at a time she was still in her S4. What started as mentorship is now a beautiful love story which was sealed by the two tying the knot recently at Namirembe Cathedral. The couple who have known each other for close to 10 years proceeded to host their guests to a reception at Tal Cottages in Rubaga. Joanita chose burgundy, peach, gold and white as the theme colors for their wedding reception, which gave the occasion a royal feel. Congratulations to the Magalas.

ambojet, a low cost carrier and sister airline to Kenya Airways commences flights to Uganda today with the launch of daily flights between Entebbe and Nairobi. The airline will fly twice into and out of Entebbe as part of a plan to expand its wings in East Africa. Speaking ahead of the airline’s inaugural flight to Uganda, Jambojet CEO Willem Hondius said, “We are delighted to launch direct service to Entebbe, a much-anticipated addition to our network where we will offer frequent and new flyers even more affordable fares. “This new route will connect businesses in Kenya

and Uganda while also appealing to leisure travelers, offering them the opportunity to experience the Pearl of Africa,” he said. According to a statement by the company, the Nairobi-based budget airline will enter the market with an introductory fare of $116 (approximately Shs410,000) for a one-way. An attempt by this newspaper to book a return ticket revealed a ticket price of $225 (about Shs810,000). With these fares, Jambojet’s claim to being the region’s only low cost airline serving Entebbe route only hold up to a point, because in comparison to some of the other airlines operating on the Entebbe-Nairobi route, there is only a slight variance in ticket prices, with fares offered by Jambojet’s competitors ranging from $20 to $100 higher. It also remains to be seen if Jambojet can succeed in a market where another low cost airline- Fastjet failed in the recent past, albeit while servicing the Entebbe – Dar es Salaam route. Fastjet entered the Ugandan market in late 2014 but exited within two years citing a change in strategy. Jambojet shares something in common with Fastjet; both established themselves as relatively successful domestic low cost airlines before venturing out to regional markets. Our queries to Mr. Hondius on this subject had not responded to by press time, but the Jambojet CEO had in an earlier statement said the airline has seen an upward trend on its domestic traffic and, “We are optimistic that the regional flight will spur the airline’s growth.” The carrier which intends to spread its wings to other regional destinations can be emboldened by an International Air Transport Association (IATA) report in 2017 which revealed that African airlines’ traffic was expected to grow by up to 9.9 percent annually, as well as the fact that with more than two million passengers ferried in its four year existence, Jambojet is one of fastest growing carriers in the East African region.

n Friday (9th February) at 12 noon (Nigeria time) up to 1bn people around the world are expected to watch the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. A record number of African athletes will compete, and for the first time ever, a pan African broadcaster will beam the ceremony and the events that follow for the next 16 days, for FREE on one TV network! Our Opening Ceremony coverage starts tomorrow at 11:50 am Nigeria time... Yes, Kwesé Sports will broadcast one of the biggest sporting spectacles in the world which until now was only available to the few richest people on the Continent. The good news does not stop there: Eight African countries will send 13 athletes to compete! While that may not sound like very many, it’s more than ever before! Look out for our

Olympic athletes from Eritrea, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Togo. So far probably the story that has caught everyone’s imagination the most is the participation of a team of three women from Nigeria (former track and field stars) who have already made history by qualifying to compete for their country in a sport called Bobsleigh (aka Bobsled). They and another female athlete in a sport called Skeleton comprise Nigeria’s firstever Winter Olympic team, where it’s (almost) never snowed! About three years ago, Nigeria’s Bobsleigh team were great athletes but had actually never been in a Bobsleigh before, nor had they spent almost any time in snow... Nor did they own a Bobsleigh or any other equipment! Friends and family helped at first, then they crowdsourced funds online, and finally found a few global brands to support them! Wow! Remember what I’ve written before about the importance of identifying good partners? Well done! If you don’t know, Bobsleigh is like motor

racing on ice, at speeds that can get up to 200 km per hour... but in a small sleek metal sled, all powered by gravity (and the strength and agility of the driver and her team)!

#AfricanLionessRoar!

These are about the fastest Africans ever, and they are women! Being a father of five daughters, I just swell with pride, guys! Now I know our daughters can do anything they want to do! Nigeria and the rest of Africa are going to be following the progress of these and other world beating #LionessRoar women in the next few weeks! I urge every African father to sit with his daughters and watch these young women race against the world. Tell your daughters: “Yes, you can do anything you want!” And as for the #LionessMoms to each of these Africans from Nigeria... thank you! Let’s all tune in and support them and all our African athletes (I’ll share some other amazing stories in the days ahead).

It’s free on Kwesé Free Sports (KFS) but if you want to see all the 300 Olympic events, then get a Kwesé decoder and go to Kwesé Channel 285 (you can watch even if you don’t have an active subscription!) There’s also pop up Channel 306 which provides our 24-hour Olympic coverage. Check for more details on Kwese.espn.com. Nothing excites me more than seeing Africans breaking barriers! Watching people try out new things, particularly things we were not previously exposed to, is just so amazing for me. I find that being an entrepreneur begins with having an entrepreneurial mindset. This means you are not afraid to try something new, or afraid of being embarrassed or ridiculed. Our Nigerian bobsleigh team appeared on some talk shows recently, including the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and have admitted to the world that it can be “terrifying” to race in that bobsleigh... But they didn’t let fear get in their way! And look where they are today. You, too, can make history if you set your mind to it.

The 29-year-old Bachelor of Art and Industrial Design graduate was handicapped by the fact that he had a hunchback limiting his mobility as he went about is job hunt after leaving Kyambogo University in 2010. Still, he kept on the lookout for the kind of job that would accommodate his challenge. “Making various designs on wooden, metallic pieces and clothing attire was my only area of expertise at the time. This knowledge enabled me secure a job at my friend’s furniture workshop in Nansana where my task was to design sofa set cushions and to do marquetry (crafting decorative designs on furniture),” Kiguli recalled. Fortune smiles upon him “I was so happy because finally I had got a job that would at least match my physical condition,” he said gleefully. Kiguli was instantly at home at his new job; within no time he knew he had found himself, so much so that he was in position to give expert opinion on what will or will not work. “Having cushions that match your sofa can be a massive waste as they will blend straight in to the sofa and the whole thing will be looking tedious. But if you add some cushions that complement other colours in your room and contrast well with the colour of your sofa, it can be as effective as adding a new piece of artwork to your walls,” he explained. In spite of his disability, Kiguli told us he was liked so much by his boss owing to the fact that he showed good speed and creativity while on a job. Such was the favour he earned Kiguli got an “overwhelming” salary raise as early as the fourth month. He said by this time he was being paid about Shs500,000 per month. “I fell so much in love with my work that

most of the time I would spend sleepless nights thinking about new designs and working on our clients’ orders. This deepened my relationship between me and my boss and at the same time with the clientele. Sometimes clients would even take me to their homes to help them select the best furniture to install in their living rooms, including selecting colours for their couches,” Kiguli told Matooke Republic. Starting out on his own After two years of being employed, Kiguli had honed his skills perfectly, and with Shs8m in savings, it was time for him to venture out on his own. Naturally, he could not look beyond the furniture business, and it was the place where he grew up – Banda

– to which he returned to set up his sofa workshop. With his Shs8m capital, Kiguli said he was only able to pay rent for his new place, buy a sewing machine which he would use to create designs on cushions, as well as modest furniture. “My workshop looked almost empty at the start since I did not have enough money to install everything but I had hope it would blossom with time,” he said. And blossom it did. Within the first four months of operation, Kiguli’s business made Shs15m, part of which he used to buy classy furniture that made his workshop stand out among the many in the area. It has been a story of steady growth since, and Kiguli today values his venture at more than Shs50m.

For instance, a little over half of equity crowdfunding pitches are successful, so setting a realistic target and valuation, and having quality campaign materials – such as an engaging video – all increase chances of success,” she added.

What is it about Zambia Zambia, it appears, is the new Mecca for Ugandan footballers. William Kasoba explores why the country has suddenly become so attractive for our footballers.

E

Geofrey Sserunkuma

urope may be every Ugandan footballer’s dream destination, but while they wait for the call from Italy, France or England, Zambia, they have decided, will be their waiting lounge. The challenges of signing up as a pro for a European club are several; ranging from restrictions based on the FIFA ranking of a football player’s country, to limitations imposed by physical build. It is for some of those reasons that the shortest route for a Ugandan footballer to turn professional has for years been scooping a deal to South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia or Vietnam. In recent years though, the trend seems to be changing, and for Ugandan footballers, Zambia is suddenly the new Kenya. Only weeks back, as two Ugandan footballers; defender Isaac Isinde and midfielder Boban Zirintuusa were being released by Zambian side Buildcon FC, another pair—goalkeeper Yasin

Lusaka Dynamos defender Joseph Ochaya ‘Gabis’ Mugabi and Hood Kawesa were being unveiled at Lusaka Dynamos, a club in the Zambia Super League. The duo joined left back Joseph Ochaya who has been at the club for nearly a year. Uganda’s other envoys in the Zambian topflight include: Fahad Bayo, Abubaker Kasule and Geofrey Sserunkuma. But what is it that has given Zambia this level of appeal?

What is special about Zambia’s league?

A recent report on the ESPN website about the Zambian league indicated that Zambia comes after only South Africa as the country that pays its footballers best in eastern and southern Africa. It is common, according to the report, for clubs like Zesco United, Zanaco, Power Dynamos, Green Buffaloes, Lusaka Dynamos and Buildcon to pay their players match winning bonuses of between $500-$1000 (Shs1.8m –Shs3.6m) per match, the kind of figures most Ugandan clubs are not even able to afford as salaries. At Ugandan champions KCCA FC, widely recognised as one of, if not the best Ugandan club to play for at the moment, players reportedly earn about Shs800,000 to Shs1.2m a month. Contrast that with Nkana Red Devils, where Ugandan striker

Tony Odur once played. The ESPN report stated how players at the club earn a minimum of $1300 a month (about Shs4.6m) and when this paper contacted Odur, the Vipers SC forward showered praise on the level of professionalism in the Zambian league. “Clubs are well organised with high quality facilities. This is not only in the topflight but rather in all divisions. In terms of players’ welfare teams can offer anything depending on players’ demands in the contract,” Odur said, citing an example of some players in the lower divisions earning $10,000 (Shs36m) a month and those in topflight pocketing more than $15,000 (Shs54m) per Abubaker Kasule month.

GERMANY: Bundesliga What agents, coaches and players say

The fact that Ugandans and Zambians have a similar build also helps. As Cranes captain Denis Onyango revealed in a radio interview last year, one of the biggest disadvantages Ugandan players suffer in their pursuit of pro football is their lack of size. This will frustrate many in a country like South Africa or Egypt, but is usually not a hindrance in a Zambia with pint-sized players. Money and size aside, Mujib Kasule, a former agent and now Proline FC CEO and coach, believes Ugandan players turning to Zambia can only be a good thing because their “league is better than our local league in various aspects and it the reason our players get attracted.” On why it has become increasingly simpler for our players to suit the Zambian league the first licensed Ugandan football agent mentioned the improved performances by the national team as having made clubs on the continent “think our players are good”. Like Kasule, SC Villa coach Wasswa Bbosa applauded the pro opportunity presented by Zambian football, noting that almost all Zambia top flight clubs are capable of meeting players’ demands. “We have talent here but the low income frustrates them.”

Not everyone is sold, however. Former Cranes star and one time football agent Ibrahim Buwembo told Matooke Republic the only reason our players are able to join the Zambian league is because it is weak. “The [Zambian league] is able to accommodate our players [because] all the good Zambian talents play professional club football in South Africa, hence giving room for our own,” Buwembo argued. In defence of his argument, Buwembo wondered why Ugandan players fail trials in “highly professional” leagues like South Africa. “Look at all the [serious] professional leagues. We have at most only two pros playing [there],” he said. He put the blame on unprofessional player agents who he said are to blame for selling raw talents. For journeyman Cranes midfielder Hassan Wasswa who has played in more than six countries across the globe, whether Zambia or Lebanon, it matters little to a Ugandan footballer; all they are looking for are greener pastures. “As a soccer player, everyone is looking for a future no matter where you are going. If you get a team that is offering a better deal of course you go on and sign,” said Wasswa before adding, “[The] reality is football is all about money.”

F

rom throwing away a lead in defeat to CNaPS Sport in the CAF Champions League qualifiers first leg, KCCA FC today play host to Uganda Premier League table-toppers SC Villa in a fixture filled with sub plots. The table leaders and record league champions wasted a chance to stretch their points lead to six as they were held to a goalless draw at home in Masaka by Maroons last weekend. Villa is now on 33 points, four ahead of defending champions KCCA who have a game in hand. Following the end of their straight seven title winning streak in 2004, the Villa camp hopes this is their season to bring the drought to an end. And coach Wasswa Bbosa is confident that his side will get a good result

despite a sloppy return last weekend, and away to an opponent against whom Villa has an embarrassing record. “It’s business as usual; we have no pressure because it’s just like any other game we’ve been playing. So we going for the best result,” Bbosa told Matooke Republic. In their first meeting this season, Villa snatched a deserved 2-1 win in Masaka, thanks to an early goal from Allan Kyambadde but required a dramatic Martin Kizza last minute winner after defender Timothy Awanyi had equalised for the visitors. Mike Mutebi’s boys might have an impressive home record at Lugogo, winning six of their eight fixtures there, but their form has been patchy this season with the champions seemingly unable to cope with the loss of key players in the last half year. KCCA can, however, look to last season’s reverse fixture for some inspiration, as the Kasasiro boys thumped Villa 3-1 on the artificial turf.

Singleton Challenge flavours second edition with singles championship BY EDWARD KALEMA

T

he first round of The Singleton Challenge tees off this Saturday at the Entebbe Club as 64 pairs compete for a place in the next round, but the flavour of the championship will be the newly added subsidiary event for the singles. The subsidiary event (singles championship), according to the tournament organisers, will feature those golfers who did not make it for the qualifiers as well as those who did not make it past the qualifiers played on January 13.

The Singleton Challenge is one of the local golf calendar’s most prestigious events, and this year attracted an overwhelming number of participants for the qualifying round—as many as 220 golfers (110 pairs)—out of which only 128 golfers (64 pairs) made it to the tournament proper. With the introduction of the singles championship (subsidiary event) the tournament which is played on a match play four ball better ball format, will have winning pairs from every month advance to the next stage until the final,

while the players in the singles’ category will keep dropping off until the quarterfinals. The challenge is set to run until July with the winning pair earning a grand prize of a trip to Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship which happens in November. There is also an enticing reward of a 2018 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for any golfer who manages a hole in one, courtesy of Victoria Motors. The tournament’s other sponsors include DStv, Afrisafe, Ekspreso, Pinnacle Security, Serena Hotels and RwandAir.
