Minister Kibuule allegedly assaults Stanbic Bank guard State minister for Water Ronald Kibuule is accused of assaulting Stanbic Bank security guard Hellen Obuku. Obuku alleges that Kibuule refused to obey to the security check up criteria at Stanbic Bank branch in Mukono. It is alleged that the minister beat up the guard and he later ordered for her immediate arrest though Kibuule denied assaulting the guard, saying he only refused to be checked by a woman. Stanbic Bank managed came under fire after it turned out they had apologised to the minister over the incident. By press time, Kibuule was supposed to meet the said guard.

Ronald Ki-bully?

NOT SHORT OF DRAMA At just 32, Ronld Kibuule is living the life his agemates only dream of. He has been a minister for over five years, has two wives and is a billionaire with interests in several Chinese-owned manufacturing companies, but his life is punctuated with dramatic series that could do for a Nollywood script, writes Paul Jjemba

S

tate Minister for Water Resources Ronald Kibuule is back in the news. And on many occasions, it is never for a good reason. Late last week, the youthful minister, was accused by Hellen Obuku, a security guard at Stanbic Bank Mukono of assault. Apparently he did not want to go through security checks because he is a minister and the guard didn’t want to know. Social media being social media, the incident went viral with claims that the hapless guard had been slapped into coma by the minister! (We guess Golola Moses and Incredible Hulk are the only other men that can slap someone into coma). Eye witnesses say that after being embarrassed in the incident, Kibuule stepped aside and made a phone call. In no minute, a Police Patrol Pick-Up truck arrived … you guessed right, to pick up Obuku. Next thing was a Stanbic Bank apology to the minister that was widely circulated, again on social media. Cyber citizens went up in arms, with many threatening to close their Stanbic Bank accounts (a valued customer like Kibuule must have wondered if many that threatened actually have accounts in the bank, or whether their bank balance doesn’t warrant closure of their accounts by the bank itself). First forward, Kibuule decided to appear in the court of social media where he had been crucified, by posting his version of the story on his Facebook account. It started with a disclaimer about how he doesn’t usually use social media, which got us wondering … This guy is just 32, and a former Minister for Youth and Children. Youth are on social media so we expected him to be regular on social media. Anyway, back to his explanation, Kibuule said that he refused to be checked because the guard was a woman, which is also interesting because he is not one to fear women (he has two wives, but we are coming to that later). Kibuule, like most politicians are expected to say, blamed his political detractors for framing him (like they are the ones who advised him to protest being checked). We understand he has since sought to meet the guard to settle matter amicably. So those of you calling for his resignation should take a chill pill. At least resignation is not in his plans. Mini skirt wearing rape victims call for it And speaking of calls for Kibuule to resign, this is the second time women activists are baying for his blood. First was in 2013 when they called for him to resign his then portfolio as Youth Minister after he said that women who wore mini-

skirts as good as called for rape and Police should dismiss the cases in case they reported any. “I have told Police that they shouldn’t listen to a person who comes to report a rape case putting on a mini-skirt. The intention was, why don’t you rape me?” the minister was quoted by Daily Monitor. After saying his was quoted out of context, the paper released a recording of his speech and he went cold. A lover of women – literally But the women activists against Kibuule should know that he actually loves women, and he loves

KIBUULE AT A GLANCE nKibuule was born in January 1984 in Mukono. nHe graduated with a Social Works degree from Mukono University in 2008. nHe is married to two women and has three children. nThis is his second term as Mukono County North Member of Parliament. nAt 13, as a pupil of P.5, he campaigned for President Museveni in the Mukono Taxi park and intrigued then area MP Janat Mukwaya who took him to a Museveni rally

to deliver the same message. He didn’t meet the president then as his father told him it was time to go home, but the president was to later hear about him and take him under his wing. He studied courtesy of former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi who paid his tuition and President Museveni later sent him to Korea for leadership training. nKibuule is a wealthy fellow who has shares in some Chinese industries that he lured to set up business in Mukono.

He is militant While Ugandans took to social media to demand for the minister’s resignation, Kibuule was during the same week also sucked into a land wrangle in Ntawo Village, Mukono District, where a mob attacked and attempted to lynch Church of Uganda bishops. Fortunately Police managed to rescue the prelates led by Archbishop Stanley Ntagali from the irate mob while coming from a tour of the one square mile piece of land that belongs to the church last Tuesday. Canon Dr John Ssenyonyi, the UCU Vice Chancellor, pointed fingers at two officials that he alleged mobilised the mob in a bid to frustrate their efforts; Kibuule and Brig Proscovia Nalweyiso, the senior presidential advisor on defence and security .

Kibuule with his two wives. He is openly polygamous.

them in plenty. The minister officially has two wives Fortunate and Esther. When he was first elected Member of Parliament in 2011, he was just 27, but he made a bold statement and a grand entry by appearing with both his wives, one in the left arm and the other in the right one for his swearingin ceremony. Kibuule is a man of means, so each woman has a palatial mansion that she calls home. But on official duties, they are summoned to accompany their man Jacob Zuma style. The two women stood by Kibuule’s side during the recent elections and took turns to campaign for him. In a previous interview with The Observer, Kibuule narrated how he came to have two wives. He was a campuser at Uganda Christian University Mukono and he had more than enough love and sperm to offer. Kibuule was two-timing his women and though as Youth Minister he warned young people against HIV saying he feared it, it seems during his campus days he had no fear as it turns out that his two girlfriends got pregnant at about the same time, meaning he was going live with both of them at the same time! “One of them told me she was pregnant and a few days later, another one also told me she had a baby on the way. I didn’t want to be a muyaye and disappoint any, so I kept both,” Kibuule says of his wives … but any woman will tell you, knocking up two women at the same time without their knowledge is already being a muyaye. “Well, at first they both ganged up against me and hatched a plan to dump me. But then they betrayed each other and came back to me in secret. Then they agreed to stay with me,” Kibuule says. Probing how he juggles two women, Kibuule was asked, “And what if one wife calls in the middle of the night that the child is ill?” “Am I a doctor? Doesn’t she have a car and money to take the child to hospital? They have their businesses... they have money to handle such emergencies,” like we expected him to say anything less. Pepper spray Whoever still has doubts as to whether Kibuule doesn’t love women has not listened to his advice to them on how to avoid rapists. “Carry pepper spray,” he one time advised women on what weapon to carry against rapists. So we guess every miniskirt wearing woman should carry pepper spray, because according to Kibuule wearing miniskirt is a call to be raped. Gun totting And speaking of weapons, though he is a civilian, Kibuule’s guards as a minister are not enough as he is known to carry his own firearm. During a committee meeting to debate the Temangalo Land Scandal in the previous Parliament, Kibuule was ordered out by the committee chair, John Odiit, because he was carrying a gun.

“How can a powerful official in the army and government be among those trying to grab church land? They have money to buy land elsewhere but they are also acting like they are poor and want to get free land,” Dr Ssenyonyi told the Daily Monitor. Kibuule, who owns a home on the land, came out clearly and accused the prelates of “hiding in God’s name to steal land!” “We shall resist such an attempt. The church cannot evict tenants illegally.” According to the Daily Monitor, ‘the land under contention is being developed by Uganda Christian University (UCU) on behalf of the church.’ Kibuule and Brig Proscovia Nalweyiso, are among more than 800 people on the contested land.

POINT BLANK

IRENE M. NAMARAH

I’ve had it with educated fools M A

part from education being the perfect excuse for most people to be unlearnt, it’s also a perfect way for them to look smart. You can’t fail to look smart when the first thing you say after meeting someone/ anyone is where and what you studied. How can you not look awesome when you’re able to summarise your awesomeness in degree this or degree that? Well you’ve earned it. All that energy, time and funds put into your education must surely amount to something. You’ve earned the right to flaunt it to whoever chooses to listen. There’s one tiny problem though, you’re a fool! Unless you’re drafting a CV, nobody gives a damn if your papers fill up a room. We’ve all seen so many degree holders walk all over town or camp on office benches in search of jobs to no avail. We’ve also seen uneducated individuals walk into a boardroom and come out minutes later with a signed deal. It’s not rocket science figuring out. Books are no longer a yard stick with which to measure intelligence and competence. Character is. Most educated people are just fools with a paper stuck in their back pocket to constantly remind them that they are. Somehow I’m willing to bet my arm and leg that it’s one of the biggest causes of joblessness. Onetime I was sitting in a bar, sipping on some poison. It was not busy so my friend the waitress came and sat with me for a chat. She had no education to speak of but every time we talked, it was a time well spent. That day, we talked at length. She said the bad thing about their line of work is that everyone thinks their illiterate, which is true anyway but, the worst thing is people thinking that everyone who’s not educated is stupid. Now if an illiterate person can tell the difference between education and intelligence, how is it that an educated one can’t? After your graduation party, you go home full of all the energy and hope of the world. You’re going to get a nice clean job and soar through the corporate ladder. You’re a graduate and people give jobs to graduates. They respect them. Your tomorrow is certain. A few years down the road you still haven’t got a nice clean job but you still carry your papers as if they’re a monitor upon, which your existence is hooked. You don’t care whether you’re working for a company whose owner is illiterate but you somehow believe you’re better off because you have a bunch of papers stashed somewhere gathering dust. You eat kikomando for lunch and supper yet you feel the guy who sells it to you should look at you as a god because well, he wouldn’t be selling kikomando if he had gone to school like you, would he? Let’s say you get your nice clean job and soar through the corporate ladder. What has that got to do with anyone else except for you and your family? What you have is a water-marked paper that confirms you have gone to school. It’s not wisdom, it’s not character and it’s most definitely not a life. A sign of good living is when people respect who you’re without necessarily knowing what you are.

“Unless you are drafting a CV, nobody gives a damn about if your papers fill up a room.

ango people have been fuming from social media to their lavatories calling Stanbic Bank all sorts of names and threatening to close down their accounts. It is all because of a suited zoo species passing for a human who also happens to have been made a minister in this government that came from the jungle and tries so much to recognise animal by-products that would otherwise be kept locked in zoos if we had a better alternative in leadership. Yes, I was talking about this by-product called Ronald Kibuule, apparently a minister, who walked into Stanbic Bank, Mukono Branch, where he is treated like majority shareholder. While accessing the facility, an askari would have none of his kamanyiro when he demanded to bypass the metal detector. The woman askari, with the mettle of a Musoga eating potatoes, said no. She stuck to it. Whack! Whack! Whack! Came the cheap response from the minister, who then completed the ignominy with a call to Police and ordering them to arrest the hapless woman askari. The hapless thing ended up in hospital after passing out from Kibuule’s alleged animalism. Not to be undone by the majority shareholder, Stanbic Bank quickly issued an apology to the minister and asked the poor woman’s employer to look into her conduct. Well, the minister claims the woman askari had insisted on frisking him, which he found uncouth considering there was a male askari too. Here is an animal who mates multiple partners—yes, like a true animal—but claiming he could not allow another woman touch him. Since when did ‘ssegwanga’ (cocks) start playing shy with ovulating hens? I mean, unless you have only one ball the size of Donald Trump’s fist, there is no reason you should fear a woman’s tender touch on your body—especially when you are a renowned polygamist like Kibuule. Anyway, things happened and the bank has apologised. The victim is to blame, the bank says. The weight of one account is all that matters. So now Mango People want to close their accounts and move on in protest to the antics of this South African firm. Well, I am not going to join this bandwagon. If anything, I should reactivate the account that has

It’s like I would be walking in there and if the tellers mess up my mood of the day—which I will always tailor-make for Stanbic—I storm the manager’s office and unleash a couple of whack-whack. For added effect, I release a fetid one to ensure that if I slapped the lips, it is the nostrils that get the worst torture. These ungrateful ingrates called Stanbic Bank, in another presser issued later in response to public outcry on how it has handled the

situation, said a lot of nothing short of rubbing it in the wound. Here is a woman askari who took her job seriously at the risk of her life. She placed her life on the line to do her duty with honour, thereby ensuring the security of the bank and its employees and clients. But this ungrateful bank concludes that the victim is not their employee and thus not entitled to even pretentious apology. What message then is the Stanbic sending to other clients who might have been weaned on baboon milk and decides to behave like one in the city? The customer is the boss, they say. So while Stanbic was within its right to consider Kibuule’s animal behaviour part of a customer’s rights in their premises, there are many Ugandans out there who might do the same and insist they are the customers: boss. I am going to do some spitting in their lobbies and demand an apology from their chief executive. -jeyseaman@gmail.com

Radio & Weasel finally shoot videos with Wizkid in Kigali W

e have it on good authority that the dynamic duo- Radio & Weasel flew to South Africa a few weeks back and shot three videos to their new tracks with celebrated Nigerian video maker Clarence Peters of Capital Dream Pictures. Well, looks like Radio & Weasel are on a roll. Over the weekend, the duo flew to Kigali where they met up with Africa’s most trending singer of the moment - Wizkid. According to our sources in Kigali, Radio & Weasel flew Clarence Peters to Kigali to shoot videos of their collabos with Wizkid; Gat No Love and Don’t Cry. The source told us that the three artistes also used the opportunity to record another song which was produced by Wizkid’s producer and they shot the video to the new song immediately. Wizkid has in the past few months managed to breakthrough into the American music circles, recording duets with American superstars like rapper Drake, with whom he re-did the Ojuelegba remix that features Skepta. Wizkid also recorded with Chris Brown, French Montana and Trey Songz. We have heard that the dynamic duo intend to officially launch the new videos with the Nigerian singer when he comes for a Star Times and Face TV sponsored event in Kampala later this year.

FOR SHOWS ABROAD

EDDY KENZO

TALKING MUSIC

Singer Eddy Kenzo is live in concert at Hotel Africana this Friday. We sat him down to tell us about the concert, his music career, and a bit about his relationship with Rema

W

e just heard that Classic Man Jidenna contacted you and sampled Sitya Loss for his new song Little Bit More. How did he contact you? We met in the US at the BET awards, had a chat and we kept communicating by e-mail. Did he pay for the rights to use the song? Yes, he did. We have realised that you are a big star in Francophone Africa and you drop a little French here and there in your new songs ... are you learning French? Yes, I am actually learning now.

THE SHOW

Venue: Hotel Africana Time: 7pm Tax: Shs20,000& Shs50,000 for VIP.

As a big African star, did you plan all this or you are also surprised by the success that you have received??? No, I am not surprised because I have worked hard for thissuccess. A while ago you were just upcoming ... do you think you are now at the same level or even bigger than Chameleone and Bebe Cool? I work to challenge myself not anybody, therefore I am not bigger than anyone because I don’t compete with

anybody else but myself. You are a very stylish man. Who chooses your clothes??? I pick out my clothes and I also have a personal designer called Phaoz who helps me put outfits together. How many pairs of shoes do you have? I don’t know. I have never counted. Do you compete for the mirror with Rema when dressing up??? No. And speaking of Rema, when is the wedding? We will inform you when the right time comes. You recently received a Range Rover from Kaki Investments boss ... what exactly did you do for him? Nothing, he just appreciates my work. We just had you are now one of the most expensive artistes to book in Uganda? Is it true you charge Shs5-6m for a local gig??? Not Shs6m.Not sure about being the most expensive artist but I charge between Shs20m-and Shs15m. What is your performance fee abroad??? It depends on where I am performing but the charge ranges from $15,000 to $30,000. Are you involved in any kind of business apart from music??? Yes, I am a business man. Tell us about your show ... what is

special that fans should look out for this time round? My fans should expect a vibrant performance, new songs and international surprise artistes that haven’t performed here before. Last year you won the BET,you have won different awards and have been nominated in AFRIMA 2016, how winning these awards has influenced your day to day decisions. Winning has just pushed me to work harder. This is your second year as an AIRTEL ambassador, tell us how you have worked with Airtel for this period. I have no complaints so for far with AIRTEL, our business relationship is very professional and open. You have had a series of concerts, tell us about them? All my concerts have come with a different vibe and a positive one at that, not exactly same challenges but I can’t exclude the challenges. They have been fun packed, good experiences and lessons, more fans and more love. You have had different collaborations this year, should we expect any of the artistes you have worked with? Yes you should. A couple of them will be in town for the show. You have travelled to different countries and collaborated with many artists, what do you have to say about the Uganda music industry? We lack professionalism. Music should be looked at like any other business. You invest as much as you can and give it your all. People should stop taking it for granted.

ulling off a good look lately isn’t so much work anymore. All you need is a good accessory to complete whatever look you may be going for.

celeb style

Today’s fashion tip is the military style Beret hat. This accessory is quite the favourite for celebrities even here in Uganda, and we have seen stars like Leila Kayondo, and Judith Heard opting for the look many times. So how does one pull off this trend? For starters, you will need to blend this into a causal look; strictly. For the guys, a pair of skinny jeans, tee and great kicks will be all you need to add this cap into your look and you are good to go. You can also switch up the look with a pair of chinos, and a waist coat for a different look. How would you describe your style? My style is urban silverback style

With the ladies, you can have this cap on with a dress, or a pair of jeans and crop top, or even switch it up again to tiny shorts and oversized tee look.

Any item we would not find in your wardobe? You can never find leather dress shoes in my wardrobe.

What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? I can’t live without my Silverback SnapBack. What is your worst buy ever? It was cheap T-Shirt that faded in just two days.

It would also be ideal for you to have this in a number of shades, so you have a different look each time.

What styling trick works for you all the time? I can’t point out anything in particular.

Body & Soul

Living I Relating

FALL IN LOVE relate Relax, there’s BUT NOT a way to deal ON THE INTERNET HEALTH

Unlocking the matters of the heart

with anxiety A

nxiety is a normal condition that occurs to everyone at any age. Anxiety manifests through a feeling of losing control, racing heartbeat, trouble breathing, hot flashes or chills, trembling, and dizziness. One can experience anxiety related to just about anything such as money, health, relationships, society, academics, family, friends, etc. However it is the intensity and duration of the anxiety that dictates whether it is a normal anxiety attack or severe anxiety disorder—clinically as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). If you feel that your anxiety is interfering with your normal life and causing dysfunction on a daily basis, it could be the case that you have OCD and it is best that you seek professional help. Otherwise, here are a few simple ways on how to deal with occasional anxiety:

Take a deep breath Because the diaphragm is connected to the nervous system, controlling breathing is highly effective when you feel nervous or have a panic attack. Inhale slowly to a count of five, starting at your belly and then moving into your chest. Gently hold your breath for five counts. Then slowly exhale to five counts.

Challenge your thoughts Feelings of anxiety occur when we fill our

minds with stressful or unhelpful thoughts. These thoughts are often unrealistic, inaccurate and unreasonable but we nevertheless fixate on them. By challenging your thoughts, you can begin to take a firm grip on the panic attack. Ask yourself questions like, what exactly am I panicking about? Is it really likely to happen? If the worst possible happens would it be that bad? What might I do if it happens? How can I prepare for the worst? Also, don’t just think encouraging thoughts, say them out loud.

Seek social support Any type of stress can significantly shrink when you talk to people or get involved in social activities. Talking is known to release endorphins that lead to a reduction of anxiety. Start with people you feel most comfortable with. You will be shocked at how your anxiety will seem like such a trivial matter.

Keep active Regular exercising is also a very effective means of controlling anxiety. Create a list of activities you enjoy and be disciplined enough to follow. However, you must also remember to engage in activities that keep your mind occupied, relaxed and confident, such as reading, music, meditating, painting, cooking etc.

Sleep well

O

kay, some will say that “love is blind” and that falling in love anywhere is ridiculous. Let’s get the facts in first. About 95% of all people relationships fall in love first and then get to know each other later. No one has ever thought of diverting from that order. Around 1% of the rest are brave enough to get to know each other physically albeit not sexually before falling in love later. Then there’s the 4%! My God, these neither know each other nor know each other, if you get my drift. For starters, lovers who have been together physically but went into a Long Distance Relationship (LDR) are still Googling “how to make a LDR work” but for some reason those who are dating online seem to think that being in love with someone you have never seen or don’t know is somewhat easy and normal.

Getting adequate rest is effective in treating just about anything. If you are having trouble sleeping, try relaxing activities before bedtime. You will be shocked at how therapeutic it is.

So you hook up inbox with this guy or chic that you’ve been following. You switch private contacts and before you know it, you’re rushing home from work for some privacy to skype or whatsapp until the wee hours of the morning. You have dumped all your friends and possibly even a lover because you are overwhelmed by the thrill that this stranger online brings you. You have a few mutual friends on social media and this takes all the strangeness out of it. You wonder why all other online relationships never make when it’s so easy and fun. You’re in love and you’re going to make it, well, until reality sets in that is. When you get to meet, she or he is as cute as you had imagined. Conversation flows even better than you had hoped for. Nothing at all is out of place except for one thing. There’s no spark! How does one “unlove” a

stranger?! You hang on, telling yourself that it’s probably the anxiety. But after the both of you have had enough time to relax, there’s still no fire. All the things that made you love each other are suddenly the things that make you feel out of place. Everything gets modified online even if someone doesn’t intend for them to be. He talks too soft because it’s an unwritten rule to not talk loud on the phone. But here he is, seemingly unable to make his point without first showering your face in litres of saliva . She seems very cultured on social media but here she is, in real life, slurping her tea. It is a fantastic thing to experiment with love in different ways, but taking that adventure online is a non-no.

Tricks to keep your nails on point

B

eautiful nails are an essential part of one’s appearance. Regardless how well one may dress, act or speak, it’s the fingernails that really say if one is wellgroomed. Dirty, brittle and untidy nails have a way of creeping out and you don’t want yours to spoil your look or worse still embarrass you. To avoid that, you might want to make use of these simple tips:

· Keep your nails well-trimmed and

filed to avoid cracking and unevenness.

·

Quit chewing nails: biting nails is an awful habit which will trump your every attempt at keeping your nails

beautiful. It leaves the nails frail, messy and rough.

·

While long nails appear beautiful, they are difficult to maintain. Keeping your nails moderately short says well-groomed from a mile away.

·

Watch the nail vanish; it might be effective in hardening, but it also messes up the natural colour of your nails.

·Eating healthy

foods is essential as food nutrients reflect

in the nails, hair and skin. For great nails boost your meals with fruits and vegetables.

· It’s also important that you boost

meals with foods rich in Vitamin B, iron and calcium such as cheese, butter, sardine, liver and pumpkin seeds.

· If possible,

protect your nails and fingers from damage caused by exposure to hash detergents/chemicals by wearing rubber gloves.

TOOTH FAIRY LESSONS

ON HOW TO SAVE O

“Give them money and ask them to save it for a particular period of time”

ne tooth out and hurray goes the child that lost it. Dashing to the parents, this child expects lots of money and gifts from the fairy. Well, that’s what some households call it. In my house though, it’s the house mouse that gives these kinds of goodies. The one who lost their tooth has to dance for the mouse and attract its attention. Daddy’s job is to look for the special drum (which we hung in one corner of the house) and ask everyone to tie funky clothes around their waists. We then make a circle and put the one who lost their tooth in the middle. And because we’ve learned this song by heart we jump into the ritual with excitement. “Sir Mr. Mighty rat please wake up from your dream, retire from work, come back to your hole; I left something precious for you. I am expecting anything as equally precious in return,” we dance and sing over and over again. We place the tooth in that usual dark corner and walk out of the house (because we don’t want Mr. Mouse to get shy) when he brings money which he actually does in minutes. Hahaa! Now, let’s ignore the other gifts that you deliver as if you were the mouse/ fairy. Let’s look at the cash. Do you help your children make

decisions on how to spend this money? How about when that generous visitor leaves your child with some change, when you sometimes carry your child to work and pay them some little money to motivate them for the services offered, do you follow up? Is a piggy bank an existent item at your house? It is never too early to teach your children how to save and a piggy bank comes in handy because it is a fun way for them to save. One way to teach children how to save is for them to have goals. Ask them what they want to buy, maybe a new toy. Instead of buying the toy immediately, give them the money in bits or pay them for

chores and this will teach them that you can save money for a particular goal. Just like a bank will reward you with interest on your savings account, you can reward your children for saving. Give them money and ask them to save it for a particular period of time, if they don’t spend it on treats like ice cream and sweets, reward them and you will inculcate a saving culture in them. Just like they expect money from Mr. Mouse or the tooth fairy whenever they lose a tooth, they can learn that not all money earned is to be spent immediately. That way, they will grow up with a culture of saving.

Yelling at kids doesn’t work S

ometimes I’m caught up in a web of yelling at my kids, calling them names, slamming things on the counter, giving bigger consequences than are needed, and refusing to meet basic needs, such as saying, “No dinner for a day.” Dramatic as it may sound, I am normal as any mother out there. These are some of the power struggles that occur between me and my children over almost anything including, bedtime, getting dressed, eating food, being verbally disrespectful, not responding to rules and limits, doing high-risk behaviour such as playing with lighters and matches, or not staying on the sidewalk. Please note that when I say “losing my temper,” I don’t mean physical violence. If parents find themselves engaging in aggressive physical behaviour when their kids act out, they need immediate help. And there’s nothing to be ashamed of in seeking help. Parents have to take responsibility when they find themselves crossing the line into physical abuse. As a mother raising a toddler and two older children that are getting close to the

“teen age”, I often become enmeshed in power struggles with them. Once this happens, the more complex my emotions become, and the harder it is to get out. I hate being mad at my children and day in day out I have learnt how best to control my temper with and for them. I have met parents who have uttered negative statements to their children out of anger and these children’s selfesteem is taken away forever. This is one of the reasons I always try to be cautious of how far my temper can drive me. In such moments I feel that my power is being tested and challenged by the child. Losing your temper with your kids is negative in so many ways, not only for them but all parties involved. If losing your temper was effective, being a parent would be really easy. We would simply have to wait until our child was annoying us too much, then we would yell at him, and they would go out and change behaviour. I have often told parents in my social circles, “If yelling worked, I would just simply call the

kids into my room and yell at them and they would just go home and have a good week. Losing your temper is ineffective because the original problem is often forgotten in the heat of the argument, and goes unsolved after all is said and done. Instead of the child learning, they are left bitter and broken. I must also add that controlling one’s temper is not easy at all, considering that we all react differently but you can make a choice to try your best and seek for help lest it destroys your parent - child relationship and even worse robs you of the trust you have between you and your child. I’m going through a phase of revising my temper because from what I have been told and the few love letters from my munchkins, they describe me as anger tempered not even short. So I have promised to work on it because I need our relationship to work for the better. I don’t want to create any such situations that only place a gap between me and the children. I hope all parents out there can do the same.

f you are an innovator with dreams of making it big, there is an opportunity for you to shine—provided by “The Lorenzo Public Funding Projects Crunch”. The event which is scheduled to take place October 8 at Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology is the university’s first ever public funding crunch and the first of its kind in Uganda. Public funding crunch events are commonplace in Silicon Valley, the US’ hub of innovation, and are arranged in such a way that students submit their projects which are analysed and evaluated by a panel of professors to pick out the best submissions whose owners then get an opportunity to pitch to an audience which chooses the projects to fund. “The Lorenzo Public Funding Projects Crunch is meant to facilitate innovation skills development, as well as motivate and inspire young innovators,” said Lawrence Kayondo, the founder of Lorenzo Group, who also hopes that the event will give participat-

ing innovators exposure by partnering with various media houses including Matooke Republic. He explained that only the best 20 ideas for innovation in any sector will make it to the final stage. Ideas will get selected for the final round based on their viability, Mr Kayondo added. Those that do not make it to the final stage will not have to despair however, as the event organiser said they will be connected to different companies in various sectors that can take on a proposed innovation and develop it further. “We are writing to different companies to adopt these innovations, but we are making sure they all sign agreements that say they can’t use an innovation without the consent of the owner. If they like it (the student’s innovation) they have to work hand in hand with the owner of the idea.” Upcoming innovators are required to sign up and register their projects at CEDAT Bamboo House for Shs10,000. At least 200 innovators are targeted for the inaugural event. ICT Minister Frank Tumwebaze is among those expected to attend.

Global sport, from an African perspective: What stands out? A

few months ago, I discussed the importance of setting up a website for your business. Have you launched yours yet? Every single business, however big or small, must have a website. As soon as I announced we were going into sports television, we set up a website for the new business, kwesesports.com. For those of you following this new African sports website, you’ll notice it has gone through several makeovers, aimed at constantly improving it. As an entrepreneur, you must never stop try-

ing to improve something. Our site will continue to go through many makeovers, as the business itself develops and grows. If you’re interested in taking part, I’d now like you to visit the www.kwesesports.com website and share with me your comments. Don’t look at it from the perspective of a consumer, but rather as an entrepreneur. It’s not yet in final form. What stands out? Think of things I’ve said about marketing and branding. Notice for instance that we didn’t start by trying to sell anything, but simply to inform the customer about what’s happening in sport around the world – from an African perspective. A friend of

mine who’s an avid sports fan told me he now visits the site several times a day to see what’s going on. (And that’s not just because he’s my friend!) He’s shared a few comments for me to think about, and I hope you will, too.

Never stop listening and learning! Now we’ve begun to give you detail about our new Free-to-Air (subscription free) 24-hour sports channel called Kwesé Free Sports. Again, we are not selling anything! We also allow the customers to watch for free, live-streaming content. We don’t get any money from the com-

panies that sell the data bundles to watch the streaming content. So what is happening? We’re investing in the brand. We are playing the “long game.” Keep watching. Keep looking carefully to understand the strategy. You may never be told the strategy of a business. More often than not, you have to study for yourself to get to it. By now you’ve built your own website for your business. Why not share with us your website... Who knows, I might visit it and highlight it in my Afterthoughts. I’m going to pick a few and highlight them, but I want to see passion and uncompromising quality from you. I also want you to constantly give your website a makeover.

From humble fruit stall to two supermarkets With only Shs150,000, Gideon Rwabwugo started his fruit stall. In no time, he had upgraded to a small shop and 10 years later, owns two supermarkets, writes Paul Jjemba

A

fter graduating from Makerere University slightly over a decade ago, Gideon Rwabwugo commenced the hunt for a job—as any graduate would. With a single mother and younger siblings to look after, he needed a source of livelihood more urgently than most, since he was now expected to take full responsibility of the home. A young and enthusiastic Rwabwugo had searched far and wide when an opportunity presented itself; for a shop attendant. That job paid him Shs200,000 per month, which money he was able to keep some savings of even after meeting all his basic needs. He also very much admired his boss at the time, businessman Patrick Bitature, who owned various big shops around town and as such always consulted him for advice. In 2005, after saving some money, Rwabwugo decided it was time for him to start a small business on the side as had been his desire for a long time. He opened

up a stall of fruits and vegetables using Shs150,000. His girlfriend (now his wife Jennifer Rwabwugo) attended to that. The stall picked up really quickly, and in no time was making him about Shs150,000 in profit a week. Rwabwugo stuck to his saving ways; keeping every coin sold from the stall while supplementing that with savings obtained from the salary provided by his regular job. With a bit of money kept aside, he was ready to upgrade from a stall to a small shop. The shop, which sold a variety of commodities, cost him Shs800,000 to start. As Rwabwugo witnessed his shop

After saving up Shs10m, of which Shs5m came from the shop savings and the other Shs5m was for work he had done for someone, Rwabwugo got an idea of turning the shop to a supermarket, and that marked the beginning of G&J Supermarket in Namugongo. Six years into the retail business, he had gone from fruit stall to small shop to a supermarket that makes him an average

of Shs2m per week. He says his main trick for success in the supermarket business is good customer relationships and long opening hours. “I serve my clients for over 15 hours daily and I normally award discounts to those that buy in bulk to entice them to come back,” Rwabwugo said. Working

Careers I Jobs I Networks

career guide

How to tell your boss

you are not happy

I

n an ideal world, our jobs would be challenging, engaging, and rewarding all the time. But, as you are already aware, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes this calls for a drastic change—like finding a new job— but other times, it may just take a small tweak to get your career back on track to a more satisfying path. So, how, exactly does one do that? Well, use the straight forward way: Tell your boss you’re not happy. It probably goes against everything you’ve ever been taught about moving ahead in your career, but truth is, sometimes bosses have no idea their employees aren’t totally loving their work. And, if you do it right, both you and your boss will thank you for speaking up.

For a start, make a list; Lists help organise your thoughts, and they provide a nice outline for tough discussions. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to plan a meeting. No boss likes to hear a laundry list of what’s wrong with the job or the company. So, chances are, if you simply present your list of “does not like,” your boss will view it as complaints or demands he or she can’t meet. Review your grievances, see if there are any themes that pop out, and summarise them into agenda items. Whenever possible, try to frame your list

in positive terms, and from a perspective of solutions rather than simply complaints. Once you have your list tidied up, it’s time to call that meeting, and try these approaches:

Suggest solutions and ask for help/advice. Suggest solutions, seek help How you tell your boss you’re feeling unmotivated is a delicate matter. You don’t want to come across as overly negative, but you also don’t want to sugarcoat your dissatisfaction, either. One way to approach the conversation is to pair all concerns with suggestions on how to solve them. If you’re having some challenges with some of your workmates, for example, ask for suggestionson how you can manage the relationship better. a wall fence

F

encing a house is no longer just a matter of enclosing but a matter of making a statement. The way you design your fence speaks volumes about your home as well as you as a person. However, when designing a wall fence there are a few things that one must consider which include; security, privacy, environment, children and pets, landscape, house size and resources. Once you have all of the above and more figured out according to priority, you can now let your imagination shoot through the roof as you embark on the project that is as good as your home’s signature. Here are a few ideas you can look into. Brick and rail fence This is normally used to preserve scenic views such as gardens and water sources. However, it’s not suitable if privacy is among your top priorities. You could design the bricks in any form and shape of your choice while outlining with the metal rails. Create a focal point Whenever a person enters a fenced compound it’s often natural for them to look around but first there’s always that particular spot that brings life to your

style. It’s also a normal habit for people to look inside a fence when the gate is open or partially open. Use this as an advantage to frame a spectacular view. Built-in landscaping A fence with a built-in landscape/garden is one of the most unique styles of fencing. Simply build in and around the fence spaces in form of buckets or basins where you can fill in with soil and plant some beautiful flowers. Brick and trees In consideration of environment and security, building a mid-fence from the ground and filling the above space with trees is a good fencing statement. It gives off a romantic appeal whilst displaying a country side nature. Concrete fencing This is a more modernised kind of fencing mostly done in homes closer to town or busy areas. It’s highly recommended for such places as it counteracts external noises and is more secure when using high security measures such as anti-climb spikes, razor wire mesh, electric and alarm wiring as well as barbed wire mesh.

Painting Should you wish to paint your brick fence, it’s highly recommended that you seek professional advice as some types of bricks are never intended to be painted. However, should you wish to paint your fence choose a colour that’s as natural as possible to maintain a soft home appeal. Light it up When lighting up your fence, it’s not a matter of throwing a light bulb here and there for the sake of security. You must apply special artistic design in order to capture all the beauty of the night. Put a little more attention to the design of your lamp holders as they also work as decoration during the day. Go antiquing For a more whimsical effect, antiques can bring out the art and soul of your fence, which intermittently reflects on your home. These you can place on top, in between or at corners of your fence according to your sense of design.

LANDSCAPPING & GARDENING Will my flowers make it through the dry season? BY ANNET NASSOLO

T

hat was what I would keep asking myself as I saw some of my flowers almost wilting. As an owner of a flower garden in your compound, you will know the kind that need much more attention; those that can’t go three days without water and those that can even go a whole month. You will realise that most potted plants need more watering compared to those planted in the ground.

One sure way of keep moisture in the soil is to use mulch, this will not only preserve moisture but also keep away the weeds. Simply use the grass that has been mowed from your lawn. As the dry season drags on, you will need to water your flowers regularly, the ideal is morning and evening however this may not be possible. You could do at least twice a week but ensure that the ground receives a lot of water (Imagine sometimes it rains all night) so take

your time and ensure the plants get enough water. Harvest rain water during the rainy season. Watering the plants in the evening is the best time as the water gets absorbed in the ground before the sun comes out. You can use a hosepipe purchased from your local hardware, a watering can or better still you can have sprinklers installed.

while getting in, around or out of the stadium.

gandans are eagerly preparing for the must-win game against Comoros this Sunday at Namboole and in the middle of the excitement, it is easy to lose oneself and throw caution to the wind. Keep in mind though that the game starts at 5pm; and is likely to end just a few minutes to 7pm. There is an obvious security threat—what with Kifeesi around-- -so to help you keep safe Matooke Republic put together a guide to help you keep safe before, during and after the game.

Leave out smart phones

Many of the thieves that show up primarily target smartphones, so, however tempting it might be for you to take selfies while in the stadium, it is best that you leave your expensive smart phones and other valuables in a safe place (if not at home) considering that the game will end after dark.

Leave your car at home

Buy your ticket now

Public transport can be a pain, but a few hours spent in a taxi or the relative discomfort of a boda boda is much less painful than having to replace stolen car lights and side mirrors. In any case, by not driving you will help to reduce the traffic jam.

Fufa has said tickets will not be sold at the stadium, which means if you haven’t bought yours yet, the best time to buy it is now to avoid getting turned back at the gates or worse getting conned because there are fake tickets that you can be sure will surface on the day of the game.

There’s safety in numbers

Going to the game with friends is not only guaranteed to make the experience a lot more fun, it also comes with a huge security benefit; because you are less likely to be attacked if in a group, while having numbers means there is someone that has got your back all the time.

It is best that you report at least four hours before the kick-off, as this will help you to avoid the long queues that are normally responsible for the commotion as the games edges closer to kick-off. The other great thing about going early is that you choose the best seat in your section.

Choose appropriate dress

Based on what the weather is like, choose clothing that is most appropriate, but while also keeping an eye on the possibility of emergencies. In that cases, closed shoes might be a smarter option in case there was some sort of commotion, while jeans should trump short skirts.

Obey all security rules

While we all acknowledge that security checks can sometimes feel or even be intrusive, the truth is that they are for your own good. Since these take only a few seconds of your time most times, subject yourself to the security officers’ orders

Friendlies are good, but let’s get the right opponents

here is something to be pleased about seeing Fufa making an effort to organise international friendly games for the Cranes ahead of every competitive fixture. You know it is definitely better days when the national team sets up a date with Kenya in preparation for Comoros, as opposed to warming up for a qualifier against Nigeria by engaging the Mmamba clan. That basic principle of getting the team some decent friendlies therefore is to be applauded. What needs to be reviewed, however, is the thinking behind the choice of opponents. Scheduling a friendly or two for the sake of it; just because every decent national federation does it, may not add much to our preparations in the best of times, and it is possible that it might even hurt those preps in some cases. Take the case of the Cranes’ preparations this time round. First, over the weekend, the team played a game against KCCA. Then on Tuesday, the Cranes played a friendly against Kenya. Both opponents may represent an upgrade on contesting with the Mmamba clan, but neither opponent is what the Cranes need ahead of our tussle with Comoros. Here’s why: we need a win against Comoros—even better if it is resounding. That means what the team need most abundantly at this point are two things; confidence and sharpness in front of goal. If we are going to play KCCA, there is no way that game contributes to either. There is hardly a difference (in terms of ability) between the Cranes players and most KCCA players. That means such a friendly gives the team next to nothing in terms of improving their confidence in their standard of play or their sharpness in front of goal. If we are going to prepare by playing against local sides, better then to find a village team that the Cranes can give a good 5-0 spanking that also allows the team to firm up their passing while boosting belief in front of goal. The same thinking should go into the international friendlies. Playing Kenya to prepare for Comoros is doing the right thing the wrong way. A game against Kenya is a derby. You don’t prepare for must-win fixture where you intend to thump your opponent by playing a derby. It’s not like Kenya play in a style similar to Comoros’, which would make for sound tactical strategy. For Sunday’s game, we should have been scheduling games against teams like Seychelles or Djibouti. Comoros might be better than all these teams, but not by much. Playing an opponent at about the same level allows us to simulate our match perfectly, but more importantly, allows our boys to score a basketful of goals against a team that is not a clan. That can’t be a bad thing for confidence going into your most important game in a long time. If you look carefully, you will notice that before any major tournament, teams like Germany and Spain play their last friendlies against the likes of Malta and Liechtenstein, which games they win by six goals. There’s a reason why.

F

irst, I must bow to social pressure plus all its norms and apologise for not making these pages in the recent past. That done, it couldn’t be a better timing for my column’s return than a week that could see the Cranes confirm a 2017 Afcon spot. The team is actually so close, some fans have already planned to have Monday off in continuation of Sunday night’s celebrations. The champagne is already on ice. To make it an even more attractive prospect, we don’t just need three points against a lowly ranked opponent; we battle a side that has just one win in five group stage matches. I am here striking a balance between keeping patriotic or revisiting some of the basic facts about the game of football. You see, in this beautiful game, anything can happen. Anything! Remember Greece and Denmark winning Euro 2004 and 1992 respectively, Senegal beating France at the World Cup, Leicester City’s EPL triumph or even Once Caldas beating Boca juniors to the 2004 Copa Libertadores? It’s a crazy sport this. However, the Cranes’ fans will care less about my “archive focus” and instead hold onto their own; Just one loss at Namboole in the last 10 years. Many will also intentionally forget the drama and tears shed on October 8, 2011 vs Kenya and that 17-goal nail-biting thriller vs Chipolopolo in 2012 that saw the then defending champions pip Bobby Williamson’s men to the “promised land”. It’s on that very backdrop of painful shockers that

Micho will motivate his lads on Sunday. Most crucial in that lecture will be the veterans in Captain Geoffrey Massa, Dennis Onyango and Tony Mawejje. These three have been performing almost consistently at the highest level for quite a while. And even though they have seen and felt how cruel football can be, their experience will be very vital. The curious case of Bevis Mugabi To many, he is just another Ugandan who has played and lived abroad. He is that player many Ugandans believe can come and slot into the starting eleven without breaking a sweat by virtue of the club he plays for abroad. But, not most of the hardcore Cranes’ fans. They have over the years seen such inclusions crumble under pressure and disappoint. Lads like Joel Kitamirike, Fabian Kizito and Martin Mutumba came, saw but never conquered. Of course the jury is still out on Melvyn Lorenzen, too. I, however, intend not to throw Bevis to the masses for scrutiny even

before he dons the Black-Yellow- Red yet. A 21 year old defender (according to Wikipedia) who has been a mainstay at Yeovil Town FC in the English fourth tier signed from Southampton’s junior side only in August. He comes off a conveyer belt that has ushered the likes of Luke Shaw, Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale, Alan Shearer, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana. That little background should guarantee a red-carpet arrival. The catch though, why Yeovil and not a bigger European side like the other names I just mentioned? Anyway, again, I won’t be among those throwing him to the guillotine even before I see him train. It’s Micho who knows exactly why he called him up. Unfortunately for both of us, his trip to Uganda is off dues to reasons not many can explain. So let’s close the debate. Plus why focus on a certain player if we can still make the Afcon as a unit. It’s the big one, it’s on Sunday. Mujje Tulumbe Gabon.

Andrew Kabuura on the Cranes and the 2017 Afcon spot... P.23

This is the moment The Cranes have had a basketful of so-near- yet-so- far moments as far as Afcon qualification goes, but this feels like surely the time to break the jinx WILLIAM KASOBA

U

ganda Cranes goes up against history on Sunday. It has been 39 years without a taste of the Africa Cup of Nations. Our boys have suffered heartbreak, seizing failure from the jaws of success in the two narrow misses when presented with grand opportunities against Kenya in 2011 and on penalties against Zambia in the 2012 campaign. Those campaigns presented Uganda with glittering opportunities, but one of them was a derby and the other was a contest with a reigning African champion. Neither could be said to be as giltedged as Comoros at home. Like Group D leaders Burkina Faso, the Cranes have 10 points but have a better head-to- head. What this means is all that Uganda needs to do is win. It won’t matter if Burkina Faso win against Botswana, a win for the Cranes will definitely see our team seal their ticket to Gabon for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations as one of the best runners-up having amassed 13 points. There have been campaigns that started with so much promise only to collapse; there have been heartbreaks. This time, though, feels just right. This is the moment.

THE PLAYERS ON WHOSE SHOULDERS OUR HOPES REST

Denis Onyango: Outstanding for many campaigns and saving at least one penalty in almost each campaign, he is the greatest assurance our defence will not be breached

Tony Mawejje: A veteran of the Cranes team and its saviour on several occasions by netting or assisting goals, he plays a great role in our midfield by often dictating the tempo with his composed displays

Geofrey Massa: Captain and the man to go to for goals, playing at Namboole seems to bring something out in him Farouk Miya: The young talent is fast becoming something of a talisman, and has a knack for scoring vital goals.

WHO’S IN THE SQUAD Cranes coach Micho Sredejovic has named a strong squad for the final qualifying game. Goalkeepers: Dennis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns, South Africa), Salim Jamal Magoola (El Merriekh, Sudan), Benjamin Ochan (KCCA, Uganda), Ismail Watenga (Vipers, Uganda)

Midfielders: Khalid Aucho (Baroka, South Africa), Tonny Mawejje (Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur, Iceland),Geoffrey Kizito (Than Quảng Ninh, Vietnam), Moses Oloya (Kuban Kransndor, Russia), Kezironi Kizito (Vipers, Uganda), Ivan Ntege (KCCA, Uganda), William Luwagga Kizito (Feirense, Portugal), Vincent Kayizzi Walugembe (KCCA, Uganda), Abdulmalick Vitalis Tabu (Sports Club Villa, Uganda).

Defenders: Nicholas Wadada (Vipers, Uganda), Joseph Nsubuga (SC Villa, Uganda), Bevis Mugabi (Yoevil Town, UK), Hassan Wasswa Mawanda (Al Shorta, Iraq), Murushid Jjuuko (Simba, Tanzania), Isaac Isinde (St George, Ethiopia), Timothy Denis Awanyi (KCCA, Uganda), Rashid Toha (Onduparaka, Uganda), Halid Lwaliwa (Vipers, Uganda), Joseph Benson Ochaya (KCCA, Uganda), Godfrey Walusimbi (Gor Mahia, Kenya).

Strikers: Geofrey Massa (Baroka, South Africa), Farouk Miya (Standard Liege, Belgium), Yunus Sentamu (FC Ilves, Finland), Emmanuel Arnold Okwi (SønderjyskE, Denmark), Geofrey Sserunkuma (KCCA, Uganda), Edrisa Lubega (Proline, Uganda), Muhammed Shaban (Onduparaka, Uganda), Erisa Ssekisambu (Vipers, Uganda).
