Kenneth Akena Watmon aged 32, also a community development officer was on Saturday shot at Lugogo Forest Mall after allegedly scratching a car. The car belonged to city businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu who is also suspected to have shot Akena. Police are still holding Kanyamunyu and his Burundian fiancĂŠe Cynthia Munwangari as prime suspects. Akena reportedly revealed that he had been shot before he passed on. Police spokesperson Felix Kaweesi said the police is carrying out investigations.

He bowed out with his team at the function held on Tuesday at Imperial Hotel. Kiggundu had been at the helm of the commission for the last 14 years which saw him oversee three general elections, two of which were challenged in court at the presidential level. Unlike other members whose next move remains unknown, Eng. Kiggundu has already been appointed by President Museveni to oversee the Karuma and Isimba hydropower projects. Col. Felix Kulayigye free to get back to work Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) lifted the suspension of Col. Felix Kulayigye who was alleged to have been involved in a gold scandal. His suspension was lifted on grounds that the complainant had lost interest in the case. Kulayigye was suspended by UPDF in August over his alleged involvement in the 2kg gold deal scandal worth Shs200m. The same case involved Kulayigye’s niece Brenda Birungi who is said to have reported to Kulayigye after she suspected she was conned by Matrich Holdings and a Congolese businessman.

Questions I Anger

AKENA SHOOTING C

fans tribal sentiments

ontroversy still surrounds the death of Kenneth Akena, an NGO worker who succumbed to bullet wounds at Norvik Hospital, following an earlier shooting around Lugogo on Saturday. There are conflicting reports over the circumstances under which Akena who worked with the AVSI charity was shot. Relatives say he told them he was shot by Matthew Kanyamunyu the person who took him to hospital. According to his dying declaration, Akena was shot by Kanyamumu when he scratched his car shortly after he had withdrawn money from an ATM at Game Stores in Lugogo. Akena said he was shot after he stepped out of his car to try to negotiate with Kanyamunyu. Kanyumunyu who is the CEO of Quantum Logistics was not found in possession of a gun and his side of the story is that Akena was shot at by assailants who were trailing his Burundian girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari. The Kanyamunyu family said Munwangari is a niece to East African Legislative Assembly member Hasfa Mossi who was slain in July this year and that she is also a target because of her divergent political views in the volatile Burundi, which is her home country. Kanyamunyu and Munwangari were arrested to help Police with investigations and they were still held at Jinja Road Police station by press time. The murky details surrounding the case have led to frustration among Akena’s relatives with Aruu County MP Odonga Otto claiming this is a systematic cover up for the murder because Kanyamunyu is a connected Munyankole. Ïf Investigations don’t come out well, we shall exhume Akena’s body and take it to Mathew Kanyamunyu’s home,” Otto said at the deceased’s requiem mass in Mbuya on Tuesday. In his quest for ensuring justice is served, Otto (in-set) has been accused of pulling the tribal card and inciting Acholi people against westerners. Odonga Otto yesterday claimed there were threats to his life because of trying to seek justice and he went as far as mentioning ‘ethnic cleansing’ on his Facebook page. “Unless you want tribal genocide or ethnic cleansing leave me alone ... why did your person kill in the first place?” “If I mean to incite my people even the burial of today will not take place and don’t forget no tribe is more superior that another and Forget not I AM FIRST AND ACHOLI BEFORE BEING A UGANDAN and my allegiance will flow in that direction,” Otto said. Media fanning tribalism? On Monday, a local tabloid Hello reported the incident with the headline “Munyankole Tycoon Shoots Acholi Guy Dead To Impress Babe

Kenneth Akena was buried in his home district of Kitgum on Wednesday. But even as he was laid to rest, lots of unanswered questioned remained about who pulled the trigger. Mathew Kanyamunyu is looked at as a suspect or good samaritan depending on which side you are on, writes Paul Jjemba

The casket containing Akena’s remains.

@ Game Mall.’’ The story was condemned for fanning tribalism, and it escalated social media debates on the tribal issue in the country. Paulo Echoku, the Chairman of Uganda Media Council released a statement castigating Hello for the story. “The article, in particular the headline is manifestly sectarian contrary to the provisions of Section 41 of the Penal Code Act Cap. 120, and blatantly misleading as to suggest that a crime has been committed on the basis of ethnicity. The manner of reporting is grossly irresponsible,” Echoku wrote. “Pursuant to powers vested in the Council under Section 9 of the Press and Journalists Act Cap. 105 you are hereby directed to stop and desist from reporting the said subject crime, or any other, in the impugned manner and/or directing the reporting of the crime to an ethnic context that is likely to offend the provisions of Section 41 of the Penal Code Act above mentioned,” Echoku warned. Several of the comments about the incident on social media have verged on tribalism but several other responsible Ugandans have called on others to desist from statements that cause division based on tribe.

NO TO TRIBALISM Editors’ note: Uganda has 65 tribes and we pride in living in harmony despite our diversity. Matooke Republic condemns tribalism. Uganda is for all of us and no tribe is lesser than the other.

Kanyamunyu has been accused of murder though he says the shooter targeted his girlfriend.

Model I Socialite

Profile

Who is Cynthia Munwangari? She is probably the person with the information on who was behind the ugly barrel of the gun that took Kenneth Akena’s life last Saturday. The beautiful Munwangari could cast clarity on the murder case that is taking a new twist by the minute. BY MOSES ABEKA ynthia Munwangari is a well accomplished woman C at her young age. The 26-year-old is a fashion designer behind the Cy’Mun Collection label and model,

as well as initiator and founder the Bujumbura Fashion Week. She was born in Burundi on September 8, 1990 to a Burundian father and a Rwandan mother. She is the third in a family of four, including two boys and one girl. She had her education solely in Burundi and is a clinical and social psychology graduate from Hope Africa University. However, her passion for fashion got the better of her. She followed her heart and slowly climbed the ladders to become one of the most recognised faces on the Burundian social circuit. She became a teenage mother and has an eightyear-old son with a man she married to but divorced before Kanyamunyu came into the picture. According to an interview with Elle Afrique, her dream man has always been one who fears God and she regarded the early marriage and consequent divorce as her “worst failure”. Nursing political ambition Kanyamunyu’s family’s side of the story is that the bullet that took Akena was meant for her because of her political connections, noting that her aunt, former Burundi representative to the East African Parliament, Hafsa Mossi was assassinated mid this year.

The fact that she is politically involved can be corroborated by the 2015 Elle Afrique interview where she revealed that she is nursing political ambitions in her home country after the once peaceful beautiful nation plunged into political chaos and its associated evils. “I like politics very much and if I have to sacrifice myself I am ready because my plans for the future will not be reached outside the field. I have to be part of the government and it’s that simple. My struggle is to develop the talents of young people (we have all not been made for school or to be a doctor, lawyer or economist…) but each of us is born with a talent and I believe strongly because it goes to boost our economy and hence the end of some problems,” she was quoted. As a famous woman, she has had many women looking up to her. So would you pull a trigger or take a bullet for her?

“I like politics very much and if I have to sacrifice myself I’m ready because my plans for the future will not be outside the field.”

Column I What’s happening

LETTER TO MY MANGO PEOPLE

jacobs seaman odongo

When saying anything positive about Kigali is a capital offence D

onald Trump, President of the United States of America. And Melania is First Lady of the United States of America. I am still trying to come to terms with this. I am one of those who were so gutted I have been praying America is colonised again. Those chaps who don’t even have a common language but speak what they ignorantly call “American English”… there is no such a thing as American English. Yes, they can have American Football or whatever, but American English? English is English. Period! There is no way you can say Acholi Luganda. No. Luganda is Luganda so is English. Now these Americans need to be colonised afresh, this time with a special focus on how to vote. I am looking at China or Russia colonising America so that those guys start speaking what they will again ignorantly call “American Russian” or “American Mandarin.” I am really angry, but it will pass. Now, I live in Kigali and travel to the banana republic I call home once in a blue moon. While home, I eat sour mangoes without complaints, endure everything else that isn’t commonplace in Kigali. But one thing I can’t do is talk about Kigali with a positive tongue. Yes, my Mango People are so fixated with finding faults about Kigali, Rwanda in general and Paul Kagame in particular that it is almost a capital offence to say anything positive about these. The only exception is when people are trolling the Leo and his cubs over launch of boreholes, bicycles and such middle income feats. The only place where I can get away with praising the Rwandan president, Kigali, Rwanda and Rwanda in general is located some five kilometres from Bugembe Town in Jinja, at the foothills of Mwiri Hill. That is because the only crime my mother and siblings can accuse me of is growing too fat or losing too much weight. Otherwise, the last time I tried to indicate that I walk home at 2am while engrossed in social media on my phone or chatting with my nocturnal friend, Ogon, someone nearly did a Kanyamunyu on me right under a mango tree in broad daylight. You see, Kampala is becoming so bad that someone will pump a bullet into you for merely farting in their vicinity. After that, Andrew Mwenda will accuse you of attempting to assassinate the culprit who shot you dead. Talking of Mwenda, I have also been told that the only times that human cardboard called Mwenda and myself speak the same thing is when we are praising Kigali and Kagame. I don’t know about this, but I will take the compliment. But in Kampala, one of my arrivals at the taxi park was greeted by a plumb fellow in shorts attempting to snatch my phone from inside a taxi. Whatever idiocy it was, he left writhing in pain because I had caught on him just in time to grab his filthy hand. The vehicle was moving and the impact got his wrist in a good fix. How did we get here? Ask the Leo. I am just glad that I got away with it at the time, otherwise Mwenda could have accused me of trying to detonate the urchin with the very phone he had snatched from me. Strange times, yes, but not as strange as Trump being in the Yellow Oval Office. Let’s face it. Kigali is moving forward. The anger on social media at the mention of anything positive about Kigali and Rwanda is just a tip of the justification, but my Mango People can now be gunned down in broad daylight. And then the usual gymnastics of court proceedings start.

SK Mbuga to wed in both Kibuli and Old Kampala mosques ycoon SK Mbuga’s much anticipated multi-million T dollar wedding with fiancee Vivianne Birungi is slated for next SaturdayNovember 26, we can confirm. However, like earlier indicated, the Mbugas’ wedding is not any ordinary matrimonial ceremony! Besides the wedding budget standing a little shy of $1.5m (about Shs5.1b), Mbuga and Vivianne might just become the first couple to ever exchange their vows in both the Kibuli and Old Kampala mosques. The two mosques have been at war for some time

and as a matter of fact, each mosque has its own followers with a separate leader. In the meantime, we have established that the Mbugas intend to hold a motorcade procession from Kibuli, through the city center, all the way to Old Kampala Mosque and then back to the Kampala Serena Hotel for their reception. We have also gathered that, before the wedding, Mbuga will officially be introduced to Vivianne’s parents in Buziga in the course of next week. Vivianne is a sister to singer King Saha’s manager Sam Mukasa. Little wonder Sam has been riding in Mbuga’s Jeep for the past several months. But that’s no biggie because Mbuga imported a Ferrari and Rolls Royce, just for the wedding!

TNS members throw surprise birthday bash for Sheebah ver the weekend singer Sheebah Karungi added another year; join O us to wish Sheebah Karungi a be-

lated Happy Birthday! But with a lot of pressure ahead of her debut concert, Sheebah hadn’t planned any celebrations for her big day. She instead woke up to her same routine for the past week; rushing for rehearsals. However, later in the day, the singer received a call from one her managers telling her to dress up to perform at a surprise birthday party for a rich kid at Spectrum restaurant. Sheebah

was there in minutes—but, as soon as she entered, she was greeted with a swarm of Team No Sleep members and some of the singer’s close friends and relatives, who serenaded her with a birthday song! Sheeba was presented with a huge cake and lots of gifts, and there were lots of eats and all tribes of alcohol. A Sheebah who was initially lost for words said; “You guys are a great family; thanks for this, it means a lot to me,” before roaring; “Now let’s celebrate my big day!”

hought NBS TV had ended their fishing expeditions at NTV Uganda? Well, we also thought so. But seems we all thought so wrong! We can confirm that NBS TV will be doing some more fishing from Serena-based NTV Uganda. This time round, NBS TV management are returning with a big fish in NTV senior reporter Julius Senkandwa. We had the privilege to see and even take a photo of a binding document that was sent to Senkandwa after discussions with NBS TV top management had been finalised. Senkandwa was tightlipped about the allegations; he refused to comment on the document, but at least he didn’t deny knowing about it. Rumour has it that NBS TV also courted another NTV senior reporter, Jjingo Francis. As the

document clearly indicates, Senkandwa is expected to start work at the Kamwokya-based station on December 1. A few months back, NBS TV courted former NTV staff including political reporter Solomon Serwanja, former weekend news anchor Rukh-Shana Namuyimba, cameraman Godfrey Badebye and Charles Ssendagire.

S

ix months singer Kalifa Aganaga set out to become a landlord. Aganaga started by paying a commitment fee on a plot of land in Jinja Karoli- Kawempe division. The singer has since been depositing money on the piece of land. Well, last week, Aganaga finalised payment and even processed the necessary documents that prove ownership of the land. And as he was about to finalise

payment, Aganaga hired an architect that made him a great plan for his dream house. So, over the weekend, Aganaga decided to start constructing a house on his piece of land. In these photos the Gudigudi singer is seen supervising delivery of different materials including bricks and sand at his site. All the best Aganaga!

esides his music and his wife, the other thing singer Bebe Cool is really keen on is developing the footballing talents of his sons. The latest on our desk is that the singer’s son Alpha Thierry is set to spend his P7 vacation training in an academy in the UK. According to sources close to Zuena, Alpha was earlier this week approved to join the yet to be identified academy where he will begin training after Christmas. Fortunately, Bebe will only spend on his son’s air ticket and upkeep while in the UK. The singer will not be spending on the training because, according to the source; “The academy was extremely impressed by Alpha’s resume and they decided to give him a chance to see his full potential at no cost.” The source added that in case Alpha impresses some more, he is likely to get a scholarship and join the academy at no cost, otherwise, Bebe is likely to have to part with thousands of pounds to keep Alpha in the academy.

or many hip singers, rehearsing for a mega concert entails hiring some of the best choreographers to improve their dance moves. But for Iryn Namubiru, rehearsing for her upcoming concert entailed hunting down some of the best Kiganda traditional dancers in the land. Namubiru is set to hold a charity concert at The Kampala Serena Hotel on December 17. And for the past three weeks, Iryn has religiously attended Bakisimba dance lessons from a professional dancer by the name of Nalwadda and a drummer called Mulangira. And it’s not because she Iryn never danced the traditional dance during her school days at Namasagali; the diva made it clear that she wants to be as professional as they come. “I am a perfectionist in most things I do. I love my country and I respect my culture; that’s why I decided to add the Bakisimba session on to my set for my upcoming concert. I am perfecting it and I am sure my fans will see what I am taking about come December 17,” Iryn told us. Proceeds from the concert will go to her charity fund, which supports a group of orphans and widows in her village in Mityana district.

Honestly, the friend zone is the only place in the world where people go to and willingly have their hearts minced and tossed up in the air and then minced some more. OK maybe I am exaggerating a bit here, or am I? Here’s how things go down. You know how girls flirt; tilting head, biting lip, twisting hair, childish giggles, shoulder tricks etc you never notice these on your girl in question but you DO notice them when she’s talking to another guy. All you get from her is burps, hands around your neck and to confirm how really platonic your platonic friendship is, she calls you “dude” and she is always trying to hook you up with one of her girls. You have used every means available to get her to unlock but you could swear it feels like it would be easier to irrigate an acre of farmland using one jerry can and a tired bicycle. You are in the friend zone and the sooner you accept that you are a lovelorn on the sideline of this amazing flawless thing the better, because the longer you stay in the friend zone the harder

it is to get out. First, there is a lot that you are inadvertently doing that is holding you hostage in there such as kissing her butt or being too damn nice. The easiest way out for you is to stop doing and start not doing. If you have already confessed your feelings like a thousand times, don’t go trying to get to one thousand and one! Stop doing and start not doing. Stop showing up every time she calls. The mother of all blunders that most friend zone captives commit is hiding a sexual relationship they might have with on the side. You might take months or even years in the friend zone and then you realise that you need some loving on the side while your captor makes up her mind. This is totally acceptable and even ingenious. Capitalise on it just enough for your captor to see what she’s missing but not so much that you will push her further away. You might even fall in love with your side girl and forget about the friend zone nonsense, or you might actually scoop yourself a key out and your captor will look at you for the very first time. Be careful to not bring the caring-you just yet. Once you have made the sale, stop selling.

Men can rock a glowing skin too

O

Kay, men may not necessarily need to glow but they still need to look good, so occasionally investing a bit more time to pamper themselves is perfectly in order. Take skin care for example. It is just as important for men as it is for women, so guys, here are a few effective, fuss-free approaches:

oily skin for the best results.

Exfoliate: Think of an exfoliating scrub the same way you would a piece of light grade sandpaper. At least once a week you can use an exfoliating scrub remove the dead skin cells from the surface to reveal the new skin cells beneath. Moisturise: Because most men

Cleansing: Relax guys, cleansing is just a fancy word for washing your face extra-carefully. Invest in a facial cleanser and use it at least three times a week. However because men tend to have skin that is a bit oilier than women’s you will need to find a cleanser that targets normal to

shave their faces, they tend to need moisturiser even more than most women do. A moisturizer will help to replenish your skin’s moisture content and also help you to prevent razor burn.

PARENT TO PARENT

TANTRUM-FREE

SHOPPING

“I have seen kids pull their parents hands and take them to sections of their interest.”

I

am a very loyal customer. I can barely remember when I last went out shopping for groceries in a place other than the one outlet I’ve been going to for the past six years. Workers here are my friends. They have something new to ask me about every time they see me and but one inevitable question has always been...” Why didn’t you come with the children?” I dread supermarket shopping with the kids. The few times we’ve gone together, I take them through a session of agreements on the dos and don’ts when we are at the supermarket. They swear to God and promise to be on their best of behaviour while out there. They use all persuasive words just to convince me to carry them along. In the car at the supermarket parking, I take them through a ceremony and a series of utterances of words to confirm to me that they will be good. I read out the rules to them again. “ No touching toys without asking for permission”... “No screaming” “No running in the supermarket” Finally, “No crying for stuff I can’t afford. If you ask for things whose budget I don’t have, you must all be cool about that!” But all this gets blown away from their memories as soon as we reach the supermarket. On entry, they start whispering in each other’s ears and they keep pointing. When I am busy picking out stuff, they hold hands and head to a direction of their interest. I get tired of reminding them of their promises and rules. It’s just too much work. I see kids who throw tantrums. They literally sit and rub their feet on the ground in protest in case the demands they made for a purchase of an item aren’t met. Parents get embarrassed and some end up paying for spoilt items if they fail to control their kids from continuously holding and playing with the items. I have seen kids pull their parents hands and take them to sections of their interest. They point and scream at the sight of a new toy or ice cream in the fridge. But I’ve also seen calm children shopping

with their parents in peace; having fun during the whole process. This means shopping with kids can be calm or disastrous. It all depends on how the parents train the kids in this area. If you are the type who gets stressed with the conduct of your child at the shopping mall, crazy as this sounds, you might need to take the children with you more often! This exposes them to this activity and it will start to look like a

normal visit with time. Be ready to explain about how much these items cost and how much you work hard to collect this money. When you explain to them why you choose some items over the others, kids will learn what to base on when shopping for durable items, the difference between quality and quantity and healthy eating habits begin from the supermarket. In no time, you will have your little tantrum throwers in check.

What to do with your vacist? T

he first bunch of vacists is home. The rest will also be back in a week’s time. Let’s get out of our comfortable parenting zone of raising toddlers and look out for the 13-year-olds and above. As I excitedly await my turn to raise this age group, I must admit it’s one crazy lot that needs a lot of sanity from your side as a parent. I engage with lots of parents some of whom are raising teenagers and the first thing they always emphasise is, “Never dare to leave a teenager idle for even a micro second”. So now that a number of them are going

to be home for some time, as a parent you must be wondering what to do with them. Most parents will be quick to mention the different holiday packages like baking classes, enrolling them for language lessons, computer lessons, or a favourite sport and the likes. Very good and commendable ideas I must say but allow me pass on my honest opinion on this? It is very good and motivating for our children to engage in all the above but I really think that before we go in for the lessons, sports etc we should deal with our home and community first. It doesn’t really matter what exactly they do. Any involvement is good! When they get involved in community activities, it

comes with feelings of achievement. Being involved in community activities can give your child a positive way of understanding who he or she is. As a result, he/she might come to see him/herself as helpful, generous, political or just a ‘good’ person in general. This can also help create a sense of being connected to her local community and the wider world. There is this one that is every parent’s favourite and every child’s nightmare: involving them in house chores. This will give them the chance to apply the skills they already have. For example, your child could use the cooking skills he’s learned at home to make snacks for sale. This will also give him/her experience in speaking to custom-

ers and handling cash. Being able to manage free time while balancing leisure, work and study is an important life skill. Engaging in household activities could motivate a child to get more organised and start to manage their own time. It can be very positive psychologically for young people to have something that gets them involved, where others expect them to turn to gadgets or get lazy doing a whole lot of nothing. This is why I encourage parents to first exhaust all the activities you can engage your children while at home before we go venturing into lessons or classes outside home...

AIRTEL PLOTS OWN micro-

loan service Wewole Soon, you should be able to borrow money off of your Airtel Money account, writes Edward Ssekalo

A

“The biggest way that we can support Uganda is to provide technology and data services that support the growth of young entrepreneurs in this country. We are helping them access global education resources using 4G technology.”

John Ndego, Vodafone Chief Executive Officer

irtel Uganda is set to launch its version of a micro-loan service called Wewole, Matooke Republic can reveal. The telecom company will offer the service, which is currently being tested, in partnership with JUMO, a South African-based microfinance provider. Although Airtel PRO Ms Faith Bugonzi declined to provide a specific launch date as she was reluctant to make this development public, she confirmed to this newspaper that test runs were being done ahead of the formal unveiling of the service. The launch, when it happens, will come in the wake of Airtel’s main competitor MTN launching its vastly successful micro-loans and savings service Mo-Kash. The service, according to a report in Daily Monitor last month, moved more than a billion shillings within its first three months, having become operational in August this year. “We are currently testing the service because we want to give the public something that is ready,” Ms Bugonzi said. She, however, would not be drawn on details about the operation of the service, such as minimum or maximum loan limits or qualifications to access the loan facility, insisting that these would be made public at the formal unveiling of Wewole, which is taken from a Luganda word that, loosely translated, means ‘borrow’. A Terms and Condition page for the Wewole service

on the JUMO website however indicates there will be a 10% surcharge for borrowers who have no funds in their Airtel Money accounts by the due date of their loans. A message that displays on the Wewole menu that is currently being tested says, “Fees are made up of fixed and daily amounts, which are shown during loan application. Payment is automatically collected on the due date.” An email inquiry to JUMO to provide details regarding the fees users would incur or the vetting criteria for loan applicants had not been responded to by the time we went to press. A representative from the South African office of the micro-finance provider however told Bloomberg in a 2015 interview, “We make credit decisions based entirely on mobile network data. How many calls you make, who are you calling, when you’re calling, how much airtime are you using, where are you topping up, what kind of phone you have, whether you SMS or not. We have 10,000 variables for any individual.” With a presence already in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Rwanda and Zambia and relying mostly on partners in the mobile telecom industry, it is likely a similar model will be applied to Uganda. Just like it is probable to be the case in Uganda, JUMO and its partners in these countries focus on low-income earning small-time borrowers for whom accessing credit through the formal banking system is next to impossible. The entry of this service however will only serve to further displace traditional banks in the battle for new subscribers, with the banks already reeling from the invasion of what was traditionally their space by mobile money services.

Uganda improves its Doing Business ratings BY OUR REPORTER

U

ganda has risen seven places in the 2017 World Bank Ease of Doing Business report, ranking 115th out of the 190 assessed economies. The report rates countries based on the business environment reforms they implement and

this latest rise implies it is now easier to start a business in Uganda and honour tax obligations, among other things, following the elimination of unnecessary paperwork. Uganda recorded improvements in six out of 10 indicators that the report uses to assess the economies. The 10 indicators include; starting a business, dealing with construction permits, registering property, access-

ing credit, accessing electricity, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, enforcing contracts, trading across borders and resolving insolvency. Uganda ranked third in the EAC region, behind Kenya and Rwanda. The report, released end of October, runs on the theme “Equal Opportunity for All” and is the fourteenth of its kind the Bank has produced.

STRIVE MASIYIWA

A Reflection: What is your vision? T

wenty-five years ago, a dear friend in America heard about the travails I was going through in Zimbabwe in my efforts to get an operating license for my mobile business. He was a senior director of one of the largest companies in America. He wanted to see how he could help me. “I have been speaking to some very influential friends of mine about you,” he began to tell me when we met a few months later. “I think you have the potential to become a remarkable businessman. So, here is my suggestion: Give up the pursuit of a mobile business

and come into something like McDonald’s. I have spoken to people there, and they will give you a franchise for any African country of your choice. You are just what they need. They will train you and give you capital.” He then explained to me how this remarkable organization worked. He gave me a pile of books on them, which I read that weekend. I was in absolute awe of them, and I knew this opportunity could change my life forever. With passion and their organizational acumen and support, it would make me a very, very rich man. A few days later, I called my friend and declined the opportunity. With barely enough money to feed my children, and not knowing what would happen next, I headed back to my beloved country to continue my fight. Fast forward:

Twenty-five years later, I ran into my old friend, now retired from his job. He looked me in the eye, with glistening tears: “I have followed your career with such pride. You achieved everything I thought you could. And you did it on your terms. Don’t stop.” That was a hard, hard decision for me to take. Let me tell you this, “As long as you live in time and space,” you will not be spared the need to make decisions like this one. You will not be spared some tough, tough situations. You will not be spared setbacks, and even bitter disappointments, at times. I had a vision of what I wanted to do, and I was not going to be distracted from that vision, even by what seemed to be better opportunities. Pause: “The wind blows where it wishes, and you

hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” I did not have a vision to make a lot of money; I had a vision to transform telecommunications in Africa. On my desk, I had a mission statement which said, “Our mission is to take telecommunications to all the peoples of Africa.” If my mission had been to make money, I would have accepted a franchise from one of the best companies in the world. A vision is not a vision if you aren’t prepared to pay a price to make it happen. Making money is not a vision, and neither can it be a mission. Today I have another vision, and you are in it! Stay with me, we have work to do together. It has only just begun. To be continued…

aking advantage of his grandparents’ vacant swamp land in Kakiri, Wakiso district, the first venture that came to Denis Kiwalabye’s mind was growing yams. It helped that Denis had been brought up in a home where farming was valued; with the piggery project, maize and coffee plantations his parents owned, Denis was at home practising agriculture, never mind that he had only joined Kyambogo University for a Bachelor’s degree in Adult and Community Education when the farming opportunity presented itself in 2013. In no time he cleared the land and, after he secured a Shs1.5m loan from his brother to help him cater for all other expenses, he went ahead to purchase 800 yam stems at a cost of Shs600 each and planted these on a one hectare piece of land. Having to spend most of his time at campus, he employed part-time workers to look after his yam growing project, with him devoting time to personally engage with the

water from the garden. “Although yams require water, it does not mean that you leave them in a water-logged area,” he said. Yams take six months to mature, and from each stem planted, one will get one yam which, according to Denis, makes it tricky

and risky if many of the stems go bad or do not mature. “This means the yields depend on the number of stems you planted. On average, each yam costs Shs2000 but it mainly depends on the size.” The main challenges he said he faces are; theft, the extreme care the yams require and the weather changes- especially when heavy rains make swamps much more water-logged. In January this year, Denis decided to diversify following advice from friends who told him rice could also grow in swamps and it gives better yields than yams. Interestingly, both crops take six months to mature. He did not waste time thinking about it; he just started off. “I already had savings from my yam project so I just transferred the capital to the rice business,” he said. ‘Super’ is

the best type of rice to grow in swampy areas, Denis learnt, and after he transferred his rice seedlings from the nursery bed to the main garden, not even discovering that rice required much weeding slowed him down. In his first season this year, he planted two hectares of rice, obtaining 1500kgs from each hectare and selling each kilo for about Shs2200. Rice growing is not without challenges though; Denis soon found himself having to battle with birds that eat his rice and not even using scarecrows in the gardens worked. So he had to change tact- employing a gang of boys who go and make loud noise around the gardens to scare off the birds. It has been only two years in commercial agriculture for the 23-year-old farmer, but such is the taste of success he already dreams of expanding into other activities. “This year I want to also invest in livestock farming and [go into] piggery.”

WHY YOU MUST outsource some jobs You definitely cannot clean the tiles on your roof … there are guys whose job is just that

Y

ou might be a die-hard DIYer, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself. You must learn to outsource anything you’re not good at or comfortable with because it will save you time, money and your sanity. Professional cleaners can do in a few hours what would take you days. Imagine how long it would take you to clean the tiles of your roof. That’s if you manage to get on top of the roof anyway. What would happen if you fell

off the roof of your storeyed house that you were cleaning in the name of saving a few shillings? What will your loved ones say at your funeral? Things like sofas and carpets have professional cleaners who will leave them looking as good as new in a couple of hours. And if you really want to fix loose door bolts and nuts, there are people for that, too. Outsourcing doesn’t always have to have lots of money attached to it. It could be

teaming up with friends and family. Maybe a friend of yours who’s got that handyman knack but no gardening skills will be willing to help fix loose bolts and nuts for doors and cabinets while you help with their garden. That’s a win-win. Irene M. Namarah

The last National Rally Championship race of the year starts this Friday in Jinja and for Jas Mangat it is a must-win

BY WILLIAM KASOBA

F

or two-time National Rally Championship winner Jas Mangat it is victory or nothing in this weekend’s Mosac Rally in Jinja. The November 18-20 event is the year’s last, and

Jas Mangat who is most likely to win.

for Mangat, it presents a final opportunity to overhaul the competition and add to his 2012 and 2013 titles. Racing in his Mitsubishi Evo.X (which rally fans nicknamed ‘Ekisodde’) Mangat will be competing locally for the first time since Umospoc Challenge Rally in Masindi where he claimed full points (100), albeit controversially, to maintain his control of NRC standings at that point. That was in July and how things have changed since. Mangat then went on to skip the Pearl Rally and it is for that reason that he needs the Jinja race if he is going to give himself a chance to stopping current leader Hassan Alwi running away with the title. Mangat, who is 69 points behind Alwi, must not finish lower than second to overtake the form driver. Alwi has 469 points while his main challenger is on 400.

What should give Mangat encouragement however is the fact that the Hassan Alwi/Eric Olinga combination will not score points even if they race in the Mosac Rally because Alwi opted to compete in the Rwanda Rally back in August and substituted that race as a scoring event in place of the Jinja race. Driver can score in six events for the NRC title race. This year’s Mosac Rally was supposed to be held in Mbale-Elgon but was shifted to Jinja as a result of various challenges for the original host town. The two-day event will have as total of 283km of which 145 is competitive. According to the clerk of the course Shafiq Matovu, the year-ender will open with two competitive sections (CS) Buwenge (23km) and Kagoma Gate (10km) on Saturday morning. Drivers then head to Jinja Agricultural Show Ground in the afternoon for the Super Special Stage (SSS). More than 30 drivers are confirmed to participate.

he MTN Kampala Marathon is back on Sunday November 20 at Kololo Airstrip. The event which is one of the biggest on Uganda’s sporting calendar is in its 13th edition and has attracted more than 18,000 participants already. They will race in three different categories; Full marathon (42.195km), Half marathon (21km) as well as the 10km road race. Kenya’s Eliud Cheptei won the 2015 full marathon in an event where Kenyan runners were dominant. The theme for this year’s event is “Run for Kampala”, and the mobile telecom company will use the proceeds from the marathon to improve sanitation facilities for school pupils through the construction of environmentally friendly smart bio-toilet facilities. This effort will focus on selected public primary schools in the outskirts Kampala and will be undertaken in partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority. This year’s tickets go for only Shs25,000 and participants will also receive a free bag, cap, bib and a bandana. It is not yet too late to book yourself a ticket; visit Stanbic Bank – William Street Branch, MTN service centres at Lugogo Shoprite, Forest and Victoria (Entebbe) malls, or the MTN shops along Kampala Road and Kyaggwe Road. Tickets are also available for purchase directly from the MTN Mobile Money menu. Like last year, MTN has partnered with various corporate companies to organise the marathon and these include; Stanbic Bank, Huawei, New Vision and mineral water bottler Rwenzori.

University Football League final on Third place: Makerere vs Uganda Martyrs University (1pm) Final: Kampala University vs Nkumba University (4pm)

K

ampala University’s reward for advancing to this year’s Nile Special University Football League final at the expense of dominant Makerere University is a tussle with fellow former champions Nkumba. The 2013 winners marched to the finals after a one-all draw in the return leg played last week at the Luzira prison grounds secured their passage via the away goals rule. The first leg hosted by Kampala University had ended goalless. . Nkumba University also booked their place in the final after a 1-1 draw away at Nkozi against Uganda Martyrs University. Nkumba had a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and UMU’s hopes of overcoming that first leg slip came to nothing as they came up against a well-drilled Nkumba in the return leg. That result meant last year’s runners-up UMU would not get a chance of avenging their final defeat as they now play Makerere University in the third place play-off. Kampala University will fancy their chances of clinching the title having won it three years back and also buoyed by the consistency in their style of play. Nkumba however did not make the final by mistake, having worked extremely hard for their final place after eliminating a strong Gulu University team away in Gulu after the northern Uganda university had held them to a goalless draw at home. Saturday promises nothing but fireworks.
