Business I Insight I Profile

Amina Hersi S

omali tycoon Amina Hersi Moghe is considered one of the wealthiest women in Uganda with interests in real estate and agriculture. She is the owner of Oasis Mall that is popularly known as Nakumatt and Laburnam Courts, an upscale apartment complex in Nakasero. Hersi is indebted to the tune of several hundred billion that she borrowed from different financial institutions to set up her empire. She recently declared a bid to run for the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry presidency against current President Olive Kigongo and businessman Andrew Rugasira. Insiders blew the lid on her heavy indebtedness wondering how a person who was recently seeking a government bailout should vie to lead an organisation to promote trade and industrialisation. One of the other complaints raised was that Hersi is not from Uganda as her family emigrated from Somalia to Kenya, before she started trading in Uganda in the late 80s. Hersi addressed the issue while declaring her bid. “This position is purely business and there is a law in Uganda that is anti-sectarian, so if the law has been put there that anybody can do business in Uganda, why shouldn’t I vie,” she said. The elections that were supposed to be held on December 16 have since been suspended by Trade and Industry minister Amelia Kyambadde citing “concerns by the stakeholders.” Foiled bailout plan Mid this year, a list of 66 distressed companies which were seeking government bailout to the tune of Shs1.3 trillion leaked with names like Patrick Bitature’s Simba Group and Sikander Lalani’s Roofings Ltd prominent on the list. Hersi was on the list through her Horyal Investments Holding Company Limited, a sugar processing venture in northern Uganda that is yet materialise. She was indebted to the tune of Shs120bn borrowed from Crane Bank. That amount was a big chunk of the non-performing Loans that led to recent Bank of Uganda takeover of Crane Bank. While making its claim for the government bailout that totalled to almost 10 per cent of the total figure, Horyal Investments stated that they employ 10,000 people and their jobs would be at stake in case the government didn’t come in to save the company. However, Daily Monitor in its July 25th story quoting experts like Dr Fred Muhumuza, an economist working with the Financial Sector Deepening Project Uganda (FSDU) on why government shouldn’t bail out the companies stated that Horyal had inflated its employment figures in a bid to present a case for themselves. “Horyal claims to employ 10,000 people …. However, according to the company directors, 1,200 people would get direct jobs to support about 5,000 out-grower farmers. This is why the government must verify what these companies claim,” Monitor reported. Sources indicate that much of the money borrowed by Horyal for the Atiak sugar venture was taken out of the country and invested in other interests, leading to the company in dire need for a government bailout which didn’t materialise. Away from the bailout, Horyal’s venture

that was supposed to start producing sugar this year has left a bitter taste both for the owners and locals in Atiak over land wrangles. Many locals protested the move of Horyal taking over 15,000 acres of land for the sugar venture saying it was their farmland and their source of livelihood. After area leaders convinced locals that the move would help in development of the area including provision of jobs, some were not convinced, leading to burning of 16 acres of sugarcane by unidentified locals who were opposed to the move earlier this year. The company estimated the loss resulting from the arson at Shs150m.

Hersi of encroachment. Kizito was also surprised that her lease did not allow her to set up permanent structures in Centenary Park, a green belt in the city that is also a swamp yet her neighbour Hersi was constructing a concrete mall. Environmental activists raised a red flag over Oasis Mall encroaching on a swamp which could adversely affect Kampala’s drainage, but Hersi was unfazed as she is said to be well connected to the government as she has built alliances with top politicians like Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa. In fact her connections saw her acquire the Laburnam Courts land in Nakasero. At the opening Of Laburnam Courts, in November 2013, President Museveni who presided over the function said Hersi approached him asking for a then vacant piece of land just below All-Saints Cathedral in Nakasero to build apartments. “If you saw this land, it was just a valley where those who go to church would park their cars and also come to relax; but see what she has done here,” Museveni said. Museveni also revealed at the same event that she benefitted from other incentives like importing building materials without paying taxes. The president said he protected her from URA officials who were demanding taxes from her! The Laburnam project needed at least Shs151bn and President Museveni asked Hersi whether she had the money. In a 2014 New Vision interview, Hersi confessed that she lied to him. “In truth, all I had was my resolve, a family name in Kenya and a good track record in doing business in Uganda.” To see Oasis Mall and Laburnam projects come to fruition, Hersi had to borrow but most local banks turned away and she got an unspecified sum of money from Barclays Bank in Kenya. The project increased her business portfolio but her indebtedness in equal measure.

Who is Hersi Born in 1963, Hersi learnt business from her mother who took over running of the family business after her father passed away when she was just nine. She started out with a small nail shop in the early 1980s and started selling Bamburi Cement to Uganda in the late 1980s. In fact her first business in Uganda won her the moniker Amina Omusementi. She permanently moved to Uganda in 1998 after the loss of her two daughters in an accident in Kenya. Her mother suggested that she moves to Uganda in order to heal. Business magnet Sudhir Ruparelia helped her settle in as she had been his client with Crane Forex Bureau. “He gave me office space for three months and also a BMW to easily settle in because my Mercedes had Kenyan number plates,” Hersi revealed in a 2014 interview with New Vision. LETTER TO MY MANGO PEOPLE

  

Museveni, Besigye meet to discuss Muk T

hat headline might have piqued your interest into reading this far but it is just a wish. The Observer newspaper reported Monday that Makerere University vice chancellor Ddumba Ssentamu had asked opposition leader Kizza Besigye to stay off Makerere lecturers’ issues. Dr Besigye has been trying to fundraise for salaries of the lecturers who have been going without pay since the university was ordered closed by the Leo last month. Prof Ddumba and Makerere University Academic Staff Association feel Besigye’s attempt only politicises the grievances of the lecturers that led to the closure. And here I am, having vowed to not talk or do anything politics again for at least six months as I recover from the comatose state American voters left me in. But it cannot be helped. Dr Besigye has a heart for Uganda but in the fundraiser move, he has skewed his shot wide of the goalpost. Had Makerere been in Kenya, Raila Odinga would have extended a hand to Uhuru Kenyatta and the two would have buried their political differences for a day as they sit and discuss solutions to the persistent issues at the university. Kenyans are that good. But this is the Peril of Africa. Everything is twisted in this banana republic. How nice it would have been for Besigye to give the above headline some credence by channeling his efforts in finding lasting solutions with the man whose boring signature is the beginning and ending of everything in Uganda. Like critics of the Besigye approach have pointed out, salary fundraising will not solve the issue at Makerere. If anything, by treading such a lane, Besigye finds himself in Museveni’s sweets-forhunger politics where money that won’t last a week is given to people needing lasting solutions, like that bicycle irrigation project that the man launched not so long ago… Now that Besigye has showed huge interest in the situation at Makerere and given that he has vowed to remain headstrong in his current stance, we can hope that he has the windows to his fundraiser bunker open too. That way, he might need to take a peer out the window at the mustachioed old Leo just in case he comes to the realisation that Prof Ddumba is right and that the only way to iron out the issue will be at the dais with the Leo. Makerere and Uganda at large needs such leadership maturity. The obduracy we have come to get used to has never solved anything but only widened the gap in service delivery. A wish like in the headline is as mysterious as the reason for a baby’s smile in its sleep but it would be great for the mango people. Imagine after a day of the two elephants fighting in a room, they emerge with sinewy muscles taut with pressure and invite Education minister, Prof Ddumba, Muasa leaders, Makerere guild head, and maybe a marabou stork to complete the Makerere stakeholders roster. Then starts the billion-dollar discourse. At the time of writing this, The Observer had quoted Muasa as having softened its stance and welcomed Besigye’s interest in the woes of the university. “We are aware that Dr Besigye is an alumnus of Makerere and for example through the convocation, he can structurally support the university in that regard. We believe that as one of the key alma mater/former students, his contribution to university is welcome at any time as the convocation constitution provides for such,” the newspaper quoted Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the Muasa spokesperson, as saying. Next step is for Muasa to invite Besigye to their meeting and they discuss how to present the way forward to the Leo who closed that university.

M

alaika Nyanzi threw in the towel at Urban TV last week, and she made it a point to share her move with fans on Facebook; “On 30th November 2016 I resigned from Urban Television. I know this is coming as a shock to many of you but trust me when I say I am as shocked as you are. Everything happened so fast but such is life,” Malaika’s post read in part. When asked why she quit, Malaika told one of our reporters that it was because she failed to reach an agreement with her bosses - contract-wise! Of course we told her that her answer was way too vague, so we chose to dig deeper. And according to our sources, Malaika simply stood her ground and demanded a certain amount for her salary, yet management had made a decision to chop salaries for Urban TV employees! “She said they either pay her what she wanted or she quits; they said they were not in position to pay her what she wanted and she decided to quit,” the source told us. The source told us there is some cost-cutting going on at Urban TV that has affected salaries of most of the station’s employees.

esire Luzinda is set to start trading as a Team No Sleep artiste, after she signed up with the Makindye-based TNS record label. But as we congratulate Desire on her latest achievement, we would also like to let you know that it was not a very easy one for the Kitone singer. We have received information that Desire called TNS head Jeff Kiwanuka and presented the idea to join his management several months back. However, the proud Jeff told Desire that he was busy and would get back to her towards the end of the year! Desire never gave up and kept on calling Jeff to find out if he had considered her request. A source revealed to us how Desire resorted to all sorts of marketing tactics to convince Jeff. “She once assured him, that she’s the best positioned artiste to outcompete Winnie Nwagi,” the source told us. According to the source, towards the beginning of November, Jeff finally gave Desire audience. “He told her she had to buy a few songs he had listened to. Desire wasted no time; she paid up for the songs and has since been in studio,” the source added. And like the saying goes; the end justified the means.

BS TV’s After 5 show host Katamba Edwin aka MC Kats is a happy man! And we finally managed to get to the bottom of Kat’s cause of happiness. We can reliably reveal that Kats is happy because he recently made up with girlfriend and baby-mama Fille Mutoni. Kats and singer Fille were seen sharing light moments and smiling from ear to ear during Sheebah Karungi’s Nkwatako concert at Hotel Africana last Friday. According to a close source, Fille and Kats were summoned by an elder from Fille’s family and the two were

sat on a roundtable where at the end of the talks, insecurity was identified as the major cause of grievances between the couple. The two were ordered to respect each other and told to apologise to each other. Our source told us that after the meeting, Kats and Fille immediately drove home to sort out their differences. In fact, Fille waited for Kats until he was done with Sheebah’s show last Friday and the two drove away in the same car.

ast year, a group of friends under their personal group – Out Flow, started an initiative that saw them share a Christmas experience and happiness with the kids and mothers in the ghettos, as well as the kids on the streets. According to Sam Semakula, the group’s publicist, Out Flow’s aim is to reach out and offer a helping hand to the tens of thousands of children living on the streets, in slums and growing number of homeless orphans. And come next week; starting December 15, Out Flow will be playing Santa Claus to the needy as they hand over basic needs to children in selected areas. “Were starting with Naguru Go down on Thursday December 15, we will then head out to Grace orphanage in Mbale on December 16, before we hold the grand ‘Xmas on the streets’ party on Kampala streets on Christmas day,” Sam explained. What does one do to join this charitable cause? “One can contribute by buying a t-shirt at 20k only, or by dropping off all unneeded used clothes, shoes or even new items to Laftaz Lounge in Kampala or in Jinja.”

ince its inception five years ago, NTV presenter Douglas Lwanga’s Purple Party has been growing from strength to strength. The event which had its humble beginnings at a Wandegeya joint known as the Bulldog will on Sunday bring over 200 artistes on one stage at Uganda Museum. The event will coincide with NTV’s 10th anniversary where viewers will get a chance to mix and mingle freely with their favourite presenters. Having witnessed a lot of animosity among artistes and presenters, Douglas Lwanga saw the need to act as a unifying factor on his platform to bridge the gap between artistes, fans and presenters who were loyal to different camps. “The backbone of it all (Purple Party) is the artistes that represent Ugandan music although I headline the event. I decided to create a neutral ground and showcase all artistes irrespective of whether they like each other or not,” he explains. Purple Party has evolved into a family-affirming event. The previous events were dedicated to artistes and their fans but this time around, there’s a provision for children. “We do not want to leave out the

nitially, wearing sandals always came off a little shabby and unkempt, especially when they were worn with shorts.

Model

How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as timeliness. I am always simple and plain. Sometimes, the dress codes of events and what my clients would like overrule what I will look like. What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? Skinny jeans. As a model, I love showing off my body and this is one thing that I can’t live without.

If you are the kind that is addicted to labels, you can still have your Guccis, Luis Vuitton, and Versace with this trend.

What is your worst buy ever? Some brown Coat. I had actually bought it to attend an introduction ceremony (kwanjula). I had planned to wear it with my cream Kanzu. It just didn’t look right on me. The size was big. It’s just home hanged in my closet.

These sandals also make the perfect travel companion for your feet. You can pair with anything from shorts, to skinny jeans and a tee to complete the look.

What styling trick works for you all the time? My trick is simple. I contact my stylist for any appearances. I also buy clothes from him too, so he directs me which one to wear with what. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Coloured socks! You will never find me wearing them.

amuel Tugumelast week decided that life was not worth living without his girlfriend. The final year Economics student at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono allegedly locked himself in his room in Banda and took his life after catching his girlfriend pants down with another guy. He worked as an electrician and through the wires, he catered for the girlfriend’s needs including her tuition and marriage plans were also made. On the day before the fateful day, Tugume admitted to a confidant that he was having trouble coming to terms with the fact that he had caught his girlfriend red handed in the act with another guy at campus. May his soul rest in peace.

Ever since the commencement the East African University Games 15 years ago, Makerere has emerged overall winner six consecutive times but this time round, other universities are breathing fresh air as there’s no chance for one of the oldest universities in the region taking the win. General Secretary of Makerere Games Union, Mr Simon Busuulwa revealed that he has tried contacting the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni about the issue but all attempts has reached a dead end. “We have drafted a petition to the Minister to allow the university to fund our sports students but all has been in vain,” he said. Living I Relating

IF MOVING IN, HAVE A PLAN B

Y

ou know how you need experience to get a job and then you need the job to get the experience? Well, that’s how moving in together is. There’s no amount of preparation that makes a person ready to move in with their lover other than to jump in and test the waters with both feet. Sink or swim style. So you have been dating what? Six months, one year? And you are basically living together. She has her stuff at your crib, know each other’s morning breaths, you have each other’s spare keys, shop together; moving in together only seems logical, right? Wrong! You have skipped one little tiny bit; before co-habiting you ought to have a contingency plan in case things didn’t work out. It may seem like nothing can go wrong but hey…and besides no one can throw you out if you have your own crib to go back to. Yet, after you moving in, most times you don’t have that plan. It is a bit like playing Russian roulette, after pulling the trigger reality sets in. Nevertheless do not fret; many have gone through the phase and in fact as many have succeeded and gone to the next stage-church bells and happily ever after. The ones who haven’t always have the same thing to say, “Things started going sideways the second we moved in together- Russian roulette! Thus the next

best thing you can do for you is to evaluate your cohabiting potential. It’s not the love that you have for each other but the tolerance. If you haven’t had a mother-of-all fights before moving in together, do not even think about packing boxes. You can’t live with someone unless you are sure that you can still breathe the same air and love their sorry behind even when you were carrying homicidal thoughts towards them two weeks ago. Have you thought about finances? Or you’re too busy convincing yourself love conquers all? Finances DO matter- a lot! Like I said before, it’s like needing experience for a job and needing the job for the experience. You will not know until you’ve been there. What are your views about having kids? How well do you know each other’s families? Most importantly where do you stand when it comes to marriage? Some people, ladies especially, feel moving in together is a step towards marriage while many guys feel that it is just for convenience. These are the questions you ought to ask yourself before you jump right in, feeling oh-so-in-love. After all, co-habiting is somewhat like getting married—without the rings and the fanfare.

Glasses as a tool to enhance beauty

R

emember when you were a kid and all you wanted was to wear glasses, even going as far as faking bad vision during a random school eye exam. Then you got a little older and actually needed glasses... Only problem now is that you don’t want to have anything to do with them. Beauty and style magazine Cosmpolitan suggests keeping these four general tips in mind when it comes to that time to buy your next pair or even first pair:

·

Contrast — The shape of your frame should contrast the shape of your face, so if you have rounder features, you want more angular glasses, and if you have more angular features you want to soften them with more curved shapes.

·

Proportion — Generally, you want your frames to be in proportion with the rest of your face. It is a bit different when you are shopping for sunglasses, which tend to be larger for greater coverage, but what looks good as a sunglass will not necessarily look good in regular (optical) glasses.

· Colour — Choose a color that

compliments your features. Black is good for highlighting and outlining your eyes. Glasses that contrast the tone of your face and hair will stand out more, but it is up to you how much of a statement you want your glasses to make.

·

Face shape — This is where it gets a little more complicated. There are as many options as there are face shapes and an optics shop is the best place to sort this one out.

Are your children holding you hostage?

D

o your children bully or blackmail you? Most parents would go like, “Hell no!”. Well, you might be surprised to find out that you have been a victim of blackmail by your children from the day they landed on earth. And as if that’s not bad enough, the older they grow the more blackmail skills they acquire. I have seen many parents over the years who routinely give in when their children act up. One mother I met, I will call her Lillian, had an  year-old son who often used emotional blackmail and threats of misbehaviour to get his way. She dreaded taking him to the mall, because she knew she would end up buying him anything he asked for in an effort to keep him from calling her names, stomping and yelling at her, and making a scene. In effect, her son was holding her hostage. Sadly, as a mother and parent she had tolerated this character for long ( years) and finding a solution now was a puzzle that would take forever to be solved. Remember, when you don’t give in to your child, they have to figure out another way to solve their problem without your help. So what happens if we always respond to this type of behaviour by backing down? Your

child learns that if he misbehaves or threatens to misbehave, that will solve his problem, because somebody’s going to give in. Make no mistake, the message you are sending your child is that misbehaviour works. When your child acts out in public, if they are not responded to in an effective way, they develop a pattern of behaviour where they learn how to blackmail you to give them their way. And their mindset is, “My way or face my acting up.” That may involve yelling, screaming and tantrums if they’re younger. It may be angry faces and a disgusted tone, disrespectful remarks and even cursing when they get older. I was raised by a tough mother so I don’t give my children reason to make me feel like I should cuddle them when they are being undisciplined. Every time you reward them for misbehaviour, you are making that portion of your child’s personality stronger. Your child discovers there’s absolutely no reason to change, no reason to mature. The other thing that you need to understand is that when your child uses acting up as a problem-solving skill, they are not learning how to develop other more appropriate problemsolving skills. Children will throw a tantrum when they are frustrated or upset—that happens. But it is not too late for you to make new rules for your household. Otherwise you will be nested in the thought of, “they are still young”. And before you know it they will feel like they are old enough to talk back at you or do worse things.

the data challenge by giving participants a chance to finish the ReadytoWork course. She noted that most youth lack confidence which is why the ReadytoWork training intends to help them build their confidence to go for opportunities. Eighty percent of Uganda’s youth are unemployed and most grapple with the challenge of limited opportunities, lack of skills and uncertainty about how to gain meaningful employment or become entrepreneurs. The ReadytoWork training aims to empower them to enhance their employment and self-employability prospects basing on four modules namely: Work Skills, People skills, Money Skills and Entrepreneurial skills. The initiative is targeted at students in their A-level, or those in tertiary institutions as well as university graduates. Registration can be done online at https://readytowork.barclays/ or manually from the Hub, Oasis Mall.

till hanging around Queen Elizabeth we start up early, heading out to the starting point. It is still dark when we pass the lioness with her cubs, and minutes later we stop. The car with the hot air balloon pulls over and they roll out the balloon and position the basket. Flying in a hot air balloon is a truly amazing way to check out the scenery, and if you are lucky, the wildlife from above. After filling the balloon with air and heating it up with the burner we all jump in to the basket and take off in no time. The heat from the burner hits you, the noise is loud but just a few seconds later the burner goes quiet and things are amazingly tranquil as we see the sun rise over QE. The scenery, meanwhile, is stunning.

After an hour of taking in breathtaking views, we land and settle down to a luxury breakfast in the bush, with the elephants a safe distance away. The little morning adventure and a day in the park done, we head down for the boat cruise- Kazinga Channel. On the boat, with proper refreshments, in shade and with a soothing breeze we quietly cruise along the channel, watching the wildlife; hippos yawning, elephants coming to drink, a herd of buffaloes rolling in the mud… In my view the best way to see the wildlife, and you really have not done Queen Elizabeth without the channel.

A great vision needs great people O

rganisational management is really about “people and process.” If you don’t know how to master these two, it doesn’t matter what you’ve invented, or how much money you’ve raised… you won’t make it in business. It’s usually really hard to get the best people to join you when you’ve just started a business because you’re (rightly) considered too risky. It’s particularly difficult when you, the founder, are yourself young and inexperienced. I know what I’m talking about because when I started out almost 30 years ago, I was only 26 years old and didn’t have either the money or reputation to attract people to work with me.

So I understand why most people in that situation will often turn to unemployed relatives and friends, who can sometimes be unskilled and even troublesome. Believe me, I’ve been there, and done that! I almost laugh now when I look back, but I hired some people who were downright incompetent and almost got me killed... Remember I’m an electrical engineer by training, and some of my early recruits as electricians did not quite measure up! In my own case, my partner and I did almost every kind of job in our little business. There was simply no room for “pretending to be the big man”! When we did a job for a customer, I was there myself, and sometimes when we finished, I joined the cleaners to make sure the customer’s premises

were left clean. We did the work, the cleaning, the invoicing, and the books. We woke up early, and went to bed very late. I never complained because it was “honest hard work” for a young man, and I enjoyed it. I interviewed every single person that I hired very carefully. I always looked for people who were skilled, sober, honest, and prepared to go the extra mile. I knew them personally, and their families. I tried to be fair in every aspect of my dealings with my employees. It wasn’t just that I considered myself an honorable man, but I also knew that “people talk.” I wanted word to get out that I was a “fair guy” in an industry where people were often exploited, and owners of businesses were known to think of themselves first, particular-

ly when they got paid, as I discussed last week. When I did get paid, the first thing I tried to do was invest back in the business. In particular, I wanted my staff always to have the best tools for their job. I also wanted them to be proud of their employer. I was fastidious over things like uniforms, presentations and appearance before a customer. Knowing that I didn’t always have the opportunity and money to hire the most skilled people, I focused a lot on training and workshops, which I handled myself. I drilled and drilled my staff. We talked about each job, and I allowed everyone to say something about what we learned. It’s great to have the big idea, but you must have an eye for the details. Then one day it happened: I got a

call from an engineer who worked for a highly reputable and well-established player in our industry. He wanted to join me. And soon it was a flood, with people prepared to take a pay cut for the opportunity to work with my young company. Now remember what I said earlier: “People talk.” You want them to give you and your company a good reputation, one that attracts the best people to your business. The best people are the most profitable. That’s business! In his bestselling book, “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t,” Jim Collins writes, “Great vision without great people is irrelevant.” Do you have the right people in your company focusing their time doing the right things? We’ll get to the importance of “process” next week.

U

nable to go much further with her education after her A’ Levels in 2012, Margaret Ndagire took up a series of jobs before landing an opportunity as a photo editor at Rona Photo Lab. After working for a couple of months, she started picking interest in other aspects of the business. “I started admiring photographers since I was witnessing them striking a lot of business deals,” Margaret said. She approached Khassim Ndiwalana, one of the workmates she was close to, for advice. “He just told me to follow my heart.” And off Margaret went. “Since I was also making some money, I opted to join an institute where I could acquire knowledge and skills about the field I was now yearning for,” she said. So she joined Crane Media Institute in 2014 and after nine months was awarded a certificate in Photography and Videography. That same year she partnered with Khassim and they

started their own studio which they named Studio 25. Using their savings, they bought a few equipment to get started; a second-hand Nikon digital camera that cost Shs1.6m, a camera tripod, lights and a laptop. “Since we

had been in business before, it did not take us long to get clients who wanted us to cover their events, doing photography,” she recalled. “Right now we have enlarged our

services from being only photographers to also working on documentaries. “With time, probably at the start of next year, we have hopes of setting up a stationary studio to make ourselves more accessible.” It is not like it has all been smooth sailing. “The main challenge in this field is struggle for exposure especially to those who are new in business,” she said, explaining how producing high quality work is a must to gain clients’ trust, and also the need to market the business vigorously. “Together with my project partner, we opened up a Facebook page ‘Studio 25 Photography’ to help us get more exposed,” she added. Having watched the venture grow two years on, a proud Margaret concluded: “Nothing is better than enjoying your own money.”

Set up your HOME BAR I

f you are one who lives for the party, entertaining guests and concocting drinks, then it is time to create your own home bar. Whether it is a night-out experience you want to replicate, or an intimate bistro bar with these ideas, you are on your way to turning your dream into a centerpiece of your home entertainment. Location Pick a suitable location where you will have uninterrupted time, say an empty room, or dining room corner. If you’re short of room don’t fret. You can still design an excellent outdoor bar. Functionality Once you have decided on the perfect location, your next step is deciding what you want to include

in your bar such as sinks, storage and refrigeration. This will help you lay out the overall design and finishes that will perfectly work with your chosen space. Wet or dry? Decide on the type of bar you are going to include in the functionalities. A wet bar is one that includes a sink so if you have chosen a place in the house where there’s no water; you will need to do some piping. A portable/dry bar on the other hand is much cheaper /easier to create. Freestanding bar You can choose to use a readymade unit if you have the space. But if the space is limited you may need a home-made unit in order

to utilise the space effectively. Get ready to become a carpenter. Personalise it You might want to personalise your bar depending on the things that strike your fancy. If you’re a sports freak, then a TV screen hanging between the drinks’ display will come in handy. Give it a theme Consider giving your home bar a theme that matches your personality. A dramatic theme of a black wood bar topped off with a silver marble counter, black leather and chrome chairs with spot lighting will reflect a cinematic tone if you’re a movie person. Irene M. from page  here are four categories of Cranes players that we created for this purpose: The Untouchables, Micho’s Men, The Dependables and The Gatecrashers.

The Untouchables Can you imagine a Cranes squad, without Denis Onyango, Tonny Mawejje, Farouk Miya, Geofrey Massa? We can’t either. There are players whose bad form is supposed to see them dropped from the starting 11, but nothing will see untouchables dropped from the squad. It is either that they provide unique leadership skills, or carry too much pedigree to be overlooked. These ones are too important for Micho to ignore, and only injury can rule them out. They will be in Gabon because they have always been the pivot for the team’s success. Micho’s Men This category is headlined by Hassan Wasswa plus others like Moses Oloya, Denis Iguma, Isaac Isinde, Godfrey Walusimbi and Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito. What matters though is that Micho has struck a chord with them, and what helps is that even when they are not spectacular, they tend to do just enough. And, oh, they are versatile. Every coach loves that. The Dependables In the Cranes set-up are players who have over time played themselves into the coach’s thoughts purely on the basis of their excellent club form, or those who regularly give solid national team performances- meaning they have become automatic picks for the squad at the very least. This is the category to which the likes of Murushid Jjuuko, Joseph Ochaya, Khalid Aucho, Kizito Luwagga, Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Erisa Sekisambu and Keziron Kizito belong. The Gatecrashers Every country competing at a major international tournament will normally have a fairy-tale story out of its squad selections and Uganda’s for the 2017 Afcon is likely to be no different. From

players who only made their mark in the last qualifier (think Nicholas Wadada) or those that had to wait on the fringes or even being ignored for years (Mike Azira), there is always a feel-good story of a gatecrasher not too far away. In addition to Wadada and Azira, the impressive Onduparaka centre back, Rashid Toha and teammate Mohammed Shaban might just squeeze into this category and the final 23, while Yunus Sentamu and the in-form Saddam Juma get this chance to restart their international careers. Who knows, maybe Micho will provide a shock inclusion to go with the surprise omissions? THE FINAL CUT: OUR PREDICTION Goalkeepers: Denis Onyango, Robert Odongkara, Salim Jamal; Defenders: Isaac Isinde, Murushid Jjuuko, Nicholas Wadada, Denis Iguma, Joseph Ochaya, Rashid Toha, Richard Kasagga; Midfielders: Mike Azira, Khalid Aucho, Hassan Wasswa, Tonny Mawejje, Moses Oloya, William Kizito Luwaga, Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito, Godfrey Walusimbi; Strikers: Farouk Miya, Geofrey Massa, Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Yunus Sentamu and Mohammed Shaban.

UGANDA AIMS TO IMPROVE AT CAPE TOWN SEVENS

HOW WE PERFORMED IN DUBAI Group Stage: Classification: South Africa - Uganda Samoa - Uganda USA - Uganda Japan - Uganda Scotland - Uganda Canada - Uganda

BY WILLIAM KASOBA

A

fter the Uganda Rugby Sevens team pushing hard but coming up short at last week’s Dubai Sevens, the focus now shifts to the Cape Town edition of the Rugby Sevens World Series. The Rugby Cranes will be aiming to win their first group game after their only victory, - over Japan, secured a th place finish in Dubai, ahead of the Japanese and Russia in the classification contest played on the second day of the tournament. This Saturday, Uganda will face off with Wales, Scotland and Samoa in Pool C in the South African leg of the World Series. Uganda already lost to Scotland and Samoa - and - respectively in Dubai but will have positives to pick from the two losses having

run their opponents closer in those games than they did in their opening two fixtures. Wales is the only unfamiliar opponent—and an unfamiliar one at that—in the group. The Welsh finished fourth following their - defeat against England in the Bronze final while Scotland finished sixth after losing - to Australia in their play-off. Samoa finished th in the same series. After South Africa, the World Rugby Sevens calendar reads: Wellington, January -, ; Sydney, February -, ; Las Vegas, March -, ; Vancouver, March -, ; Hong Kong, April -, ; Singapore, April -, ; Paris, May -, ; and finally London, May -, . The Rugby Cranes interest however will only extend to Hong Kong.

Inside Micho’s mind: Who will make the final ?

O

nly the man that knows Micho little would have been expecting any major surprises as Cranes’ Serbian coach made known his provisional -man squad. Micho is not best known for his risk-taking, so it was a mild shock learning that Emmanuel Okwi was not even going to make the preliminary selection. Micho is usually a loyal man, and Okwi had been his man for a long time now. His omission was perhaps the only reason one would take seriously the coach’s

comment that “Nobody will be gifted a place, as from now on the counter is on zero. All  players are in healthy competition to earn [their place] in the final ,” he had declared at the unveiling ceremony. It would be too generous to believe him. The reality is that some players are more equal than the others in the Cranes set-up, and it nothing unique to Uganda. It is acknowledging this fact that picking out who might make the cut becomes easier. Story continues on page 
