EC has no money to hold elections for the six newly created districts After a section of legislators questioning when elections for the six new districts will be held, the Electoral Commission has confirmed that it does not have money to conduct the long awaited elections despite the law giving only 60 days for such elections to happen after creation of the district. Royal Love I Komuntale

Komuntale; a royal who loves bad boys BY MOSES ABEKA
I
t’s been a while since you last heard from Tooro Princess Ruth Komuntale. For starters, in 2012, some wayward American, a one Christopher Thomas hit the headlines as the chosen one by the then 23-year-old Princess who had chanced on him during her sojourn in the US where she studied. Well, there was the sourgraping when, we the local geezer community, asked in profound wonderment what is about us that the princess loathed so much to marry a culture-less chap who - with not so much of a heritage to talk about expect Tupac, Biggie and Kanye West. Boojo! Since they say the voice of the people is the voice of God, perhaps Tooro’s deity listened to the cries of the subjects and set asunder what travel, education, modernity and ‘akajanya’ put together. While we expected a ‘polished Princess Charming’ driving fleet of highmaintenance luxurious German cars, Christopher Thomas donned jeans, tee-shirts and sneakers. At the time, he could pass for an upcoming rapper under Navio’s Klear Kut crew. Better still, with his American accent, tattoos and good physique, Christopher Thomas evoked comparisons to Uganda’s brand of bad guys; the socalled ghetto youths, only this time, he was cleaner and of course smarter in every sense of the word. Well, the modern
The Princess and the deejay that spins her heart fairytale ended in a mess as a Nokia battery at the time lasted longer than the marriage! They did not live to celebrate their first year as husband and wife! Christopher publicly accused the princess of infecting him with herpes! The badboy broke the heart of a princess. Such, a story that provokes angers of the gods! ‘Duke Thomas’ hanged around hoping for a chance to amends but alas, Tooro gods did not go to sleep. That dust settled. Christopher returned home after rubbing shoulders with royalty. He has since become a father and as fate had it, he remains a painful memory. Princess Ruth Komuntale avoided press as much as she could and kept her life a secret as she coped with what she described as her ‘worst life experience’. With the invention of social media, it was not so long before she bounced back in our faces. Now wiser and older, the 29-year-old recently started revealing what she can longer keep private. It all started with a list of her ideal man.
Another royal wedding affair could happen in the near future; thanks to the romantics flying on Instagram.
Her list, posted on Instagram comprised of a Cinderella-like ‘check-list’; the kind of things that your mother will always tell you about. After she posted the list, I guess the gods met over one evening and had drank gourds of local brew. Her elevenpoint list pointed at a God-fearing man who is honourable and sees beauty in her scars.

Describing him as ‘heaven sent and everything she always wanted’, Ruth is surely in love with the Jamaican deejay and IT engineer. Wait a minute. Did I just say Jamaican Deejay? Yes! Like ‘Princess of Africa’ Yvonne Chaka Chaka sang, ‘I’m in love with the deejay’, Tooro Princess Ruth Komuntale too has got a deejay playing the tunes that her heart loves. May be the gods are back to square one. Maybe Phil will make amends for what Thomas put her through. Maybe the fairytale deserved a second chance! Just maybe.

Development Channel’s celebrity ambassadors to drag boss to court BY ALEX TAREMWA
A
s is the norm for many businesses to tap into celebrities’ huge followings through offering them ambassadorial roles, Development Channel – a scheme whose operations many have termed fraudulent - needed a few Ugandan celebrities to capitalize on their social media presence and personal brands to sell/ market its products; a no dropout tablet and smart phone. The company reached out to a few musicians, actors, comedians and television personalities and signed them up as brand ambassadors for a period of three months but renewable after the probation. According to one of the celebrities who asked not to be mentioned, the company gave them a signup fee of Shs2m, a no dropout tablet, with which they would pose for photos and appear with in photos and during some of their public appearances. These celebs were also promised a car each and a monthly stipend of shs2m. Not a bad deal! Development Channel signed eight
celebrities as brand ambassadors; comedian Patrick Salvado Idringi, singers- Fik Fameica, Ykee Benda, the Nabwisos (Mathew and Eleanor), Sheila Gashumba, Douglas Lwanga and Roger Mugisha – a star-studded lineup. When she put ink to paper, Gashumba was waxing lyrical about how the company was here to transform the economy and kick poverty out of Uganda.
“Africa has been waiting for something of this kind of initiative. Economic war is the deepest and the most influential social war every African should support. Am so grateful to Development Channel for the idea and the initiative,” she told her Facebook ‘fam’ (of course holding her tab.) However, trouble came when the time for Development Channel to deliver on their promises arrived. The boss, Charles Lambert began coughing excuse after excuse, but the celebrities continued their vigorous marketing and brand promotion as stipulated in their contracts. Not only did the company fail to pay their monthly Shs2m stipend, the branded Toyota Prado vehicles they were promised were never handed to them. “We saw some nice Prados in the parking lot, but we later learnt that the man had just hired the vehicles from somewhere. And as we were awaiting for the official handover, we woke up to news that police had impounded the cars and that the boss was in trouble. I was puzzled,” one ambassador said. He added that Lambert (the boss),
“talked big” about how he was here to change the world but his promises got unrealistic and this started to raise red flags about the credibility and honesty of the man they were working for. “The man told us he was to give the shareholders (people who bought tablets) $100 dividends per month. Then he started saying the money will be growing with time so will start with $20. He kept changing goal posts, so I lost morale,” they added.

Dehumanising treatment Often times, they would be invited to different parts of the country to entice unsuspecting Ugandans into joining the reigning “economic war” by buying the tablet phone at over Shs960,000 and get a guaranteed monthly return of $100 (Shs380,000) for a lifetime. Not a bad move! But whenever the powerful, popular celebrities graced the presence of the main man, they would get stripped of their ‘massape!’ Some of those we talked to, claimed that he (Lambert) treated them like kids, often ordering them to sit on the floor of his Itiri House office in Luzira while he spoke. According to insiders, the ambassadors had strict orders not to interrupt the boss (Chairman), could not answer phones (which would have to be in silence or off anyway) and would not move out – even to ease themselves. Lambert – just like another philanthropist- Bryan White, openly ordered the celebrities around, barked at them and liked to impose his authority just to rub it in that he is the ‘boss.’ Impending lawsuit It is for the above reasons that one of the ambassadors is dragging the maverick Chairman – as his is referred to by his employees, to court. In an exclusive interview with Matooke Republic, the ambassador expects his suit filed by Thursday next week. “I am suing him for breach of contract. I can’t work for three months not have received my pay,” he says. It should be noted that the Development Channel boss is already battling a court case in which he was arrested on August 23, 2018 for running a Ponzi scheme after the drivers of 73 Prado SUVs he had hired went months without pay and were threatening to burn his Bukotobased offices. According to them, Lambert owed them over
“
“This organisation has over 10,000 employees but we have not yet met our targets. If they are working, we should be seeing results. They are just upset.” Shs237million. Development Channel boss speaks out In a chat with Matooke Republic, the braggart Chairman instead accused the ambassadors of breaching terms and conditions after they decided to work from home during the month of August, as opposed to the company’s offices as agreed. Lambert added that those who claim not to have been paid were “liars” wondering “how they could have worked for this long without any pay.” “We were attacked by some demons and we’ve managed to fight them off. This organisation has over 10,000 beneficiaries, so the few who are rushing to the media should not spoil it for tens of thousands out there. They are just upset, and were trying to find ways of settling everything,” he said. Abrupt meeting According to sources within Development Channel, Lambert called an urgent meeting with the ambassadors on Wednesday after learning that Matooke Republic was working on this story. Although by press time, the agenda of the closed-door meeting had not been disclosed to the ambassadors, an insider told us that the meeting was meant to convince and make new promises about the ambassadors’ pending payments.

HairbyZziwa racks in cash, doubles in on space
G
ood things seem to be coming HairbyZziwa’s way this year. After declaring himself drug free and being the official hairstylist at the UNAA convention, the hair stylist seems to have racked in enough cash as he has officially bought out a second space at the Kisementi based Krishna Mart. Sources confirm that the stylist has been up and down at his salon clearing up the new space and is excited about having a much bigger salon. When contacted, the stylist said that the space had grown small for the business and it was high time the expansion happened. “At times customers come in and the space is not enough to accommodate all of them and we are overwhelmed. I want the new space to cater for a much bigger number of people,” said the stylist. The hairstylist recently appeared on TedX Kampala at Kyambogo alongside other dignitaries including Elly Tumwiine where he gave his drug experience to the thrill of students in attendance and also talked about his hair business.

Swangz Avenue’s Benon on Kanye West, reveals big plans for youths Ahead of Roast and Rhyme ‘Soul on Strings’ edition slated for Sunday at Jahazi Pier, Munyonyo, Moses Abeka caught up with Benon Mugumbya at their new offices at The Square. We spoke about Swangz Avenue, Kanye West and everything in between. so many other things and we are always glad to share. There is also something we are going to do beginning that was inspired by what happened…just look out for that…I can’t reveal everything now but we believe it will be very impactful. Talking Roast and Rhyme. Why did you select these particular artistes for this edition? As you know Rand rhyme comes with different edition. This one is the soul on strings edition. We have artistes that we know are soulful and will give our audience a very nice experience. There will Shifah Musisi, Aziz Azion, King Saha and Kika Dance Troupe. I have seen them [Kika Dance Troupe] perform several times and I’m every very sure they will blow people’s minds. What’s your say about artistes joining politics? We are all Ugandans and I don’t think categorizing that a person is artistes should not be leaders. We are also able to be leaders and make a difference in our community and country and various aspects of life. Roast and Rhyme is slated this Sunday, November 28 at Jahazi Pier, Munyonyo. King Saha, Shifah Musisi, Aziz Azion, and Kika Dance Troupe are slated to perform. Entrance is Shs50,000.
F
rom the country-wide tours, working with Tarrus Riley, then the concert and finally, Kanye West’s visit! How would you describe the ten years of Swangz Avenue? It’s been an amazing year just like all other years. We have seen a lot of progress steadily. However, this year, we could say it has crowned off our ten years. It has been like the highlight of the ten years. Like you mentioned the show, tours, even working with Tarrus Riley producing a song about the country, then Kanye West, moving to our new space…we are now closer to our clients in almost in the middle of the city. This is like the icing on the cake. We hope it keeps on growing steadily. When you were starting out, did you envisage things to turn out this way? Those that know me will tell you it’s been about passion. The things that fall along may not be planned for. They happen but it’s not something that you our tightly planned. Five, ten years ago if you told me that things would turn this way, I would say ‘Impossible’. There so many people; very passionate and doings but the results don’t seem to come… Consistence and persistence. Not everything will work out. There will always be those days when things will not work out. We have not achieved everything we thought we would. Talking Kanye West, how was the atmosphere in the studio working such a big name? Describe for us the experience!
The time that we interacted with him, you know, he wanted to know about our sound, our music, and he played for us his new material and wanted to know our views and get just the general reaction. We discussed lots of things; the state of the world, positivity, encouraging oneself, togetherness…it was really a mixed emotion; excitement, passion, a lot of things. According to information on Swangz Avenue Facebook post, you set up four studios! What was really happening there? There were six studios set up. Initially they had asked for four and they then asked for two more. It was really a big team; sound engineers, artistes…something came up and they Which other artistes were there other than Kanye West and Big Sean? There were other artistes and some that I did not know. One was Titian Taylor, Big Sean…it was really a big team. During Kanye West’s visit there so many people proposing that you mentor the youths among other things. Do you have such in your plans? This is something we have been doing and we would love to continue. We were also mentored by people who were in the industry and working with Kanye West gave us a lot of learning experiences something we will just compile on that we have been doing. We shall always pass on the knowledge. At least almost every day, one or two young artistes come to our doors for advice, guidance and

Living I Relating
SCI-FACT Women are happier being single than men- study Turns out… women are a lot happier not putting a ring on it than guys are.
And… women aren’t in a hurry to couple up, the new study continues. All my single ladies…
A new study by consumer analysts Mintel found that 61 per cent of British women basically feel fantastic about being single, while only 49 per cent of men feel the same way. The survey also found that single women aren’t looking to change their relationship status anytime soon; 75 per cent said they hadn’t been searching for partners in the past year, compared to 70 per cent of singles surveyed overall. But the Mintel study found that people still see being in a relationship as a symbol of maturity — 25 per cent of singles think that people who are spoken-for are more grown up than they are. The reason women don’t want to partner up could be simple: Relationships are work. One expert said it takes a lot more effort for women in heterosexual relationships than it does for men. “There’s evidence that women spend longer on domestic tasks than men and I think they also do more emotional work — so they still do more housework and cooking and things as well as more emotional labour,” University of Essex professor Emily Grundy told The Telegraph. The survey showed that the single status trend was strongest for women older than 45 — 32 per cent of single women aged 45 to 65 said they were very happy to be flying solo. Only 19 per cent of men in the same age range were thrilled about it. The growing percentage of single people could dismantle the stigma surrounding so-called spinsters and bachelors, though. Prof. Grundy said single women surveyed were happier than their male counterparts. “Women tend to be better at having alternative social networks and other confidantes, whereas men tend to rely quite heavily on their wives for that and have fewer other social ties,” she said.
Now… Can we hear what research figures say about women and their relationship-readiness in this our Kampala?
WE ARE OUR
WORST ENEMY BY IRENE M. NAMARAH
A
fter the devil, I fear women. Or maybe the two are one and the same. Please don’t shoot me yet. You see, before we ask the universe to elevate us to the same level as men, we must clean house first. Because how do we expect to rise ourselves up when we don’t have honour and integrity even amongst ourselves? If you don’t believe me, go to Mama Tendo or any of those common groups and see how women are fighting to tear each other apart. Better yet, ask me about Prossy my once best friend and employee who not only slept with my ex but also partnered with him to bring my business down. Whaaaat? Good question. This story is for another day. The point is, the rate at which women are competing these days is doing more harm than good. I am not saying that men don’t compete. They do. But most of them use competition for good rather than evil. If he likes how your business is progressing, the worst he can do is steal your ideas and maybe a few employees. If he likes how smooth your marriage is flowing, he will use it as a motivation to settle down: not to tear yours apart so that you can be miserable together. I am not saying women don’t use competition for good. Some do. A woman will go after you or yours simply because she cannot stand to see you happy. At the end of the day, after she has got what she wants, she will get stuck. She won’t know what to do next. Her major motive, subconsciously or otherwise, was to see you squirm. And then she will blame the universe for being unkind to women.
relate Unlocking the matters of the heart
A lot of women today pride themselves in being side dishes. In fact, it is believed that you have not arrived until you have slept with a married man or two. When that man ends up treating you like trash, you start talking about women’s rights. Sometimes I think men treat us the way they do because we are one confused lot. When you sleep with your boss and then use it as an advantage to step on your fellow employees, how do you expect him to treat you any kinder once he’s had his fill? Men see these weaknesses in us. And they
put them to good use against us. Even the women at the forefront of this battle for women’s rights are being let down or demoralized by their fellow frontliners. their motives are purely based on selfish grounds. The if-i-cannot-have-it-no-oneshould-have-it lot. They will convince you to stop kneeling for your hubby, mess up your marriage, only for you to find them happily kneeling for theirs. These are the serpents amongst us that we must fight first. You may now shoot me.

Four reasons you should go for teeth cleaning every year BY PAUL ISABIRYE
M
any of us understand dental hygiene and care to mean a readiness to brush every morning. Or to do it when we wake up and before we go to bed. Oral hygiene and care however means more than that. It is also about making regular visits to your dentist for a dental cleaning, say once every year, and here are four reasons this should become a habit for you:
Keeps away gum disease
A professional dental cleaning promotes healthy gums since it removes the tartar that often causes gingivitis.
Gives a much better clean
You cannot compare the teeth cleaning you get at home and to the dental clean you get from a dentist. Layers of tartar and stains that appear to be permanent can be
scraped away by your dentist, yet that is something none of your toothpastes ever could.
Helps to detect oral cancers
Oral cancer is a serious issue all over the world, but one can be caught if you regularly visit your dentist for a teeth cleaning exercise. Your dentist should be able to detect warning signs and alert you to them as he or she examines your mouth every time he/she cleans your teeth.
Helps to detect other issues
Your dentist thoroughly examines your mouth while cleaning your teeth, and that gives him/her an opportunity to detect any issues you are having. From newly developed cavities to broken fillings. And normally, the earlier you detect an issue with a tooth, the cheaper it is to fix it.

MUBS students in campaign to save Bududa landslide victims
T
he Bamasaba Makerere University Students’ Association, MUBS has come up with a programme aimed at saving Bududa landslide victims dubbed #LetsSaveBududa. The association has staged a tent near the University’s main building where
willing students can donate basic needs such as clothes, shoes, money and other items needed for home use. The Bamasaba association has also produced T-shits with words ‘#LetsSaveBududa’ which are being sold at only Shs20,000. The money raised from the sold T-shirts will be used to buy items that
will be taken to the landslide victims in eastern Uganda. So far, the Bamasaba Association has collected nine bags of clothes for men, children and women. The MUBS administration has offered a bus to transport a few students and the donations on Monday, October 29.
arlier this year in May, the Makerere University administration recommended and approved a plan to issue with original and certified copies of transcript to graduates immediately upon graduation to avoid inconveniences and delays to students as they hit the job market. As a result, students who are set to graduate next year will leave the Freedom Square armed with their transcripts and set to authoritatively compete for jobs with their counterparts from other universities, according to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe. Campus Bee has learnt that the University Senate awaits approval of marks from individual colleges before embarking on the process of making the transcripts. This marks approval process is expected to be completed before the end of November. “Once the final results from colleges have been submitted, Senate will clear them and printing of transcripts will commence immediately,” Prof Nawangwe said before adding that the same graduands will be free to pick their transcripts before graduation come January next year. The Vice Chancellor believes that giving graduates their original transcripts on graduation day is what the institution ought to do as a ‘world-class’ university and that the development is aimed at avoiding inconveniences to students after graduation. The administration also believes the development will reduce on the rampant extortion cases among the transcripts staff. Original and certified copies of the transcript are a vital requirement for one to get a job today as well those who desire to pursue more studies. At Makerere, issuance of transcripts is done after students have cleared in all the necessary offices, including among others the accounts office, the guild office and the University hospital. The university is set to organise her 69th graduation ceremony in the second week of January 2019 and they expect to graduate about 13,000 students including students from Nakawa based Makerere University Business School (MUBS).

H
avo Kampala, Celebrity stylist How would you describe your style? My personal style is what you would describe as maestro. I love to be unique and different with my fashion and my style.
CELEB STYLE
What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? That would definitely have to be sneakers. I could wear these everyday of my life. What is your worst buy ever? It was a duffle bag that I bought downtown. Don’t even get me started on the details. What styling trick works for you all the time? Layering or colour blocking. It’s impossible not to have a head turning look with these two style options. Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Washed out and ripped clothing. Still not sure how people walk around with these.
TREND ALERT! CAMP COLLAR SHIRTS
S
hirts are one of those items you are never going to have enough of in your wardrobe. The hardest bit though is finding variety so you can have a different look each time. So allow me introduce you to the vintage camp collar shirts. These short sleeves pieces are going to literally relate all your polo t-shirts, and give you a great look, with very little effort. With focus on its unique collar, these shirts work well with dress pants and even chinos. And the best part is you can choose to wear your shirt in a warm shade like lime, lavender, and even pink. If you are the kind that loves taking fashion risks, then you can even have your camp collar shirt with some prints. When it comes to the rules; never wear this with a tie, or for a formal look.

Fashionpreneur summit
to explore Uganda fashion business potential BY SANDRA LAMWAKA
W
ith Uganda still grappling with high youth unemployment rates, the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards Fashionpreneur Summit couldn’t have come at a better time. The Ciroc-sponsored summit that is scheduled for October 27 will among other things explore the business potential that the fashion industry brings to the Ugandan economy and how the youth can use this potential to create jobs by focusing on inspiring action and fueling creative fires spanning in the fashion industry relating to not only the youth’s economic opportunity but also economic growth. The fashion industry in Uganda is probably one of the most undervalued sectors in the creative industry, but if recent years are anything to go by then the signs are that the country’s fashion industry has over time gained momentum with the sector not only growing as a source of tax revenue, but also as a new avenue for employment and livelihood for many, especially the youth. According to the Cotton Development Organisation (CDO), cotton is Uganda’s third largest export crop after coffee and tea, supporting 250,000 households but because of imported clothes – mostly secondhand, only 5 per cent of the total cotton production is consumed by two local textile factories. This mismatch also highlights the overwhelming potential Uganda has to spur local production and hit optimum capacity that could have a significant impact not only on the manufacturing industry, but also the economy at large. With the East African Community (EAC) spending more than $350 million on importation of used clothes (mivumba) according to Uganda Manufacturers Association figures, the time is ripe for the youth to learn how to monetise their projects, seek funding, market their brands and manage finances. “The fashion industry in Africa has immense
possibilities. However, to unlock all this potential, we need our youth to be empowered with at least some basic business skills to earn from their creative projects,” said Brian Ahumuza, proprietor and founder of the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards. “We’re already blessed with creative young people who are digitally savvy, an opportunity they can use to create markets not just in Africa, but across the globe. If they are empowered with knowledge, skills and mentorship on how to make profitable businesses, Africa’s economy might be
blessed with a huge boost,” he added. The summit will feature speakers from sectors such as banking, marketing, digital, tech and fashion design. Among them will be David Tlale, one of South Africa’s top fashion designers who boasts a wealth of both business and creative knowledge. Celebrated radio presenter and news anchor Flavia Tumsiime, fashion designer Santa Anzo, make up guru Mona Umutoni and last but not least Bernard Mukasa, a senior associate at ENS Africa and a specialist in corporate commercial law, intellectual property and employment law.
Strive Masiyiwa
This is how we begin! Do you have what it takes?
L
ast weekend I was in Copenhagen to attend a big conference where I was a judge in a pitching contest for social entrepreneurs. My team is working on the video which will be posted on this platform in due course. Later on I met a Danish entrepreneur who has moved to Kenya to set up a ride-hailing business called Mondo. I’m definitely interested in investing, because of his extraordinary drive and passion... He quit his job working for an American investment bank where he had a great career, and left one of the most secure, prosperous countries in the world, Denmark, to go and start a business in Africa. This is what he said to me: “When I visited Kenya, I noticed that many people really struggled for transport, particularly to get back to their rural homes.” He did not come looking for me. We had al-
ready heard about him, and I asked to see him after seeing what he was doing. There are a lot of people even on this platform who have received calls from me and other investors that follow my blog! To be a great entrepreneur today, you must be driven by a hunger and desire to meet the needs of people in a sustainable way that generates enough profit to interest those with capital to invest. True entrepreneurship is sacrificial. This is what risk-taking is all about. You must be prepared to leave your comfort zone, and “rough it for a while.” And you must see all obstacles that you might meet as mere stepping stones on your way to the top. If what you are trying fails, and you lose the money, you get up, dust yourself, and try again. You know I was in the region just a few weeks ago, and I’m on my way back there in a few weeks. I will be in Beijing and Singapore. Remember my comment on the @EntrepreneurialTourist!
I want you to read this story carefully. It’s called “How a high-school dropout with big ideas founded GoGoVan, Hong Kong’s first US$1bn start-up” ... After you read it, I want you to list five lessons that you have learned. No prizes, because this is a very serious exercise. The lessons you learn will help you decide whether or not you can make it as an entrepreneur, or should rather stay put in your job. Finally, reading the story reminded me of some things that happened when I was also starting out in business as a young entrepreneur: I approached a friend who had returned with me from the UK to invest in our startup in Zimbabwe. I was desperate for money, and knew he had saved some money whilst working in the UK. His reply still rings in my ears to this day: “I cannot do something so foolish! I’m saving money to buy a house. My dream is to own a nice car, which I now have, and a house in one of the suburbs. I have a fantastic job with an international company.
“What’s wrong with you, man?” he asked. Have you lost your mind?!” It was a stinging rebuke, but it steeled my resolve! “I would not build a house in any of those fancy suburbs,” I told him. Soon after I solved the problem by selling my own car! Years later he approached me for a job, and I declined. Not because I was vengeful but because I don’t hire people with that kind of mentality, if I manage to spot them in time! Another friend of mine got engaged whilst we were starting a business together. He was a hard working guy and his girlfriend was a nice girl. So one day whilst we were having coffee, after a long day, she joined us. I could see they wanted to tell me something: “When we get married we will need a house, and some nice furniture,” she began. “I know some places where you can rent a furnished flat,” I replied. “We want to own our own house,” she said, then added: “You guys have money, and if you distribute it, there is enough for us to get our start.”

Charles Kiganda makes 1m
in profit from his chicken hatchery per month BY PAUL JJEMBA
C
onstructing and purchasing hatcheries and incubators was not part of Charles Kiganda’s plan when he started his poultry venture in 2010. His beginning can easily be described as a humble one, reason being after he sold off bricks he had laid for a couple of months, the Kyetume resident stated that he made about Shs900,000 in profit. This is was what he used to start his chicken farm on the free family land in Mukono, initially starting with about 300 birds after getting inspiration from one neighbouring poultry farmer. After one year, Kiganda’s farm had grown to a respectable size. Yet he realised that he could not make ends meet because he was earning less compared to what he injected into the business. So he chose to forego rearing and do hatchery. “I started with 250 kroiler birds (of three months old). I bought each at Shs3000. But as time went by I realised the farm needed much more attention including proper feeding, vaccination and debeaking and all these cost me a lot compared to what I would earn after selling them off. “This was the time I chose to switch to hatching because here the birds can be sold even when they are two months old so the attention needed is for a limited time,” he told Matooke Republic. Despite the fact that acquiring an incubator and a hatchery seemed very expensive, the 32-year-old farmer said he devised means of acquiring at least an incubator and then, to manage costs, decided to make his own hatchery. “From my parent stock I had saved
growing wealth Shs4m but because the smallest incubator (which can hatch a total of 860 eggs) costs about Shs4.5m, I went to Butenga farm in Wakiso district and paid Shs2.5m. They allowed me to take my incubator and clear the balance later but on a condition that I had to buy the fertilised eggs from them, this how my hatchery firm began in 2012,” he added. Hatching process Chicken hatchery is aimed at hatching eggs for broilers and layers of both local
and hybrids. Selected good (fertilised) eggs are collected and inserted into an incubator for 18 days. From here they are transferred into a hatchery for three days to complete the 21-day cycle. According to Kiganda, breeding is far better than selling eggs since it adds value to the eggs, and the eggs cost Shs500 each yet a three months old chick now costs between Shs5000 and Shs7000 depending on the breed quality. The one big worry for Kiganda, however
is that the eggs are prone to going bad in case power goes off and there is no standby generator. High power bills are yet another one of Kiganda’s major challenges, while the other minor hitches come in form of disease attacks, as well as inadequate qualified personnel. He concluded by saying breeding has been and still is more profitable to him compared to nurturing birds. His major target market has been farmers in his locality, who most of the time pay for their stock in advance.

nlike the men’s league basketball final playoffs that lived up to the expectations of the majority, the Tusker Lite Women National Basketball League playoff final seems to have a shocker brewing as the team regarded by most as the underdog in the tie—JKL Lady Dolphins—is leading the best of seven playoffs 3-0 against giants UCU Lady Canons. Going into the final, Lady Canons would have felt confident enough to seal the championship which they have dominated in the last three consecutive years. Besides, UCU had history to chase, that is matching record local league winners Lady Bucks who have eight titles to their name. And to show they were on a different plane in terms of pedigree, the Mukono-based side was playing in their tenth final and ninth in succession. However, JKL Lady Dolphins who are playing their maiden top division final appear to be not giving any respect to past history and they are confidently writing their own. For those that watched the two ties of the two sides in the regular season, it should not be a shock as such for UCU to be on the wrong side of the series. The Lady Dolphins recorded a double over Lady Canons (55-52 and 46-50) and topped the season log with 34 points in the process. To qualify for the final, the Lady Dolphins made a commanding sail after sweeping A1 Challenge 3-0 in the best of five semifinal playoffs. With such impressive performance it’s the reason they are one win away from claiming this year’s title. Zama’s show, Juruni’s magic The final whistle results may show UCU as a side having a bad day but that is only to those who wait for results (70-64, 75-69 and 56-49). For those

watching the games, UCU is good but Dolphins is excellent. A variety of Dolphin players are playing the final of their ‘dream’ display and these include the likes of Rita Imanishimwe, Flavia Oketcho, Hope Akello, Muhayimuna Namuwaya and Stella Oyella. But a one Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi is in her own league as she has been the standout player. Zama has collected 21, 24 and 27 points in the three games of the final so far and no doubt she will be the
hot favourite for MVP, as her A Game has caused massive damage to UCU. Coached by Mandy Juruni, the man behind City Oilers’ dominance in the men’s category as well as the improvement of the national team the Silverbacks, Juruni and his magical tactics appears to be instilling the same mentality in the Lady Dolphins players. He has given them confidence and consistency even when trailing as was the case in game two and three.
