Yesterday morning, Kampala City Council Authority launched the annual carnival at City Hall. While at the event KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi stated that this year’s edition will be much bigger. ”This year is going to be special, longer and better. It’s going to be a mega blast. The very special thing about this year’s celebration is that the festival is going to be three days long.” The event that is due in August from 6-8 has a budget of more than Shs1.3b and according to the KCCA ED it will be fully funded by sponsors. Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz will headline the performance.

Government to Introduce Oral HIV Self-Test Kit The Ministry of Health this week revealed that it’s considering to introduce an oral HIV self-test kit that will enable promote male-partner HIV testing. Dr Joseph Matovu, a lecturer at Makerere University explained how the kit will be used. “You swab the self-test kit on your upper gum and the lower and it’s this swabbing that captures fluids on the gum. The kit after being inserted in the solutions will start to show lines. If it shows one line that means you are negative if its shows two lines, it means that you are HIV positive but you need to do a confirmatory test in a health facility,” he said.

NRM members led by presidential advisor David Mafabi, brought together youth leaders, academicians and MPs and resolved that the NRM party should remove the age limit to allow President Yoweri Museveni continue leading the country beyond 2021. According to reports, in the meeting that was held at Kati Kati, those in attendance were assured that the campaign will be successful.

OMG I laughable

F*#KERY Zero brain moments

Kenyan tycoon buried in Shs360m bullet proof coffin C

onsidering recent high profile burials, the way you go out is very much as important as the way you live. Fallen Rich Gang boss, the self-styled tycoon Ivan Ssemwanga was buried with cash and members of his ‘gang’ popped champagne at his grave. On the heels of Ssemwanga’s burial was St. Lawrence Schools founder Lawrence Mukiibi asking for an all-white themed burial. The skeletons that came out of the closet linking him to having sexually used his students leaving over 80 children showed that he wasn’t as clean as the funeral appeared. But now a former Kenyan minister has topped all that, having asked his family to bury him in a bullet proof gold casket! Yes you heard it right – bullet proof casket. Looks like some guys are waiting for him with machine guns in the underworld. Biwott was a powerful minister in former President Daniel Arap Moi’s cabinet but he was reclusive and no one apart from close relatives knew his home. He used to circle around the Nairobi round-

abouts thrice just to ensure no one was following him. According to Kenyan press, Biwott said even in death enemies would be all over him. He therefore demanded that he be buried inside a bullet proof coffin so as to scare away people aimed at him. He also told his beloved ones to bury him in a golden coffin, to symbolise his social status as he was one of the wealthiest Kenyans. His coffin was ordered from the US at a cost Ksh10m (about Shs360m), now beat that.

Young woman “rams” into NRM SG Kasule Lumumba’s speeding SUV and dies Speaking of f*#kery, not much will beat NRM spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa’s statement after the party Secretary General Kasule Lumumba’s vehicle was involved in an accident that cost the young life of Karen Namara, a former Kyambogo University student. Mulindwa (pictured) like his brains were on holiday said the girl who was a French teacher at a school in Lweza along Entebbe Road had “reluctantly rammed into the car” (such f*#kery). For good measure Mulindwa mourned the damage of the car; “The SG’s car (a prized jet black Toyota Landcruiser VX) got front damages but she escaped with no visible injuries.” Worried about the condition of the occupants in the car that was over speeding (judging from the damage) when a pedestrian “rammed” into it, they had to undergo medical check-up. WTF?

Kasese kids run from “detoother” Museveni Detoothing is a Uglish term to mean “mean” girls who “eat” men’s money without delivering “goods” in return. But kids from Kaghando Primary School in Kasese district take detoothing literally and the detoother they loathe is President Yoweri Museveni. Officials in this government have looted national resources, but no one will loot these kids’ teeth. A crafty fellow spread a rumour at the school that the ongoing national registration of students was a plot by President Museveni to remove their teeth and fill them in sacks – apparently for rituals. All pupils fled the school. It not only jeopardised the registration exercise, but could have marked an end to education for some of the pupils as they fear Museveni might detooth them when they return. They think he should keep his UPE and they keep their teeth.

Parenting

Kids I Mums I Dads

Let’s do it for Kayla mama sandy This week, I will use my column space to share a sad story. If possible share the story with friends. You never know whose life you might save.

I

t’s Thursday night, time check 3am and my six-month-old still won’t sleep. I start to pray the 3 o’clock prayer as I wait for her to sleep. Lucky enough at 4 she dosed off and I finally got some sleep. At 5am, hubby’s alarm went off and up she was again and this time she didn’t sleep again until 8am. My older daughter (almost three years now) got up jolly as usual calling me so hard that I couldn’t sleep again. So I was forced to begin my day with heavy eyes. I made her breakfast and fed her since her appetite was down. We watched her favourite cartoon together until midday when I gave her midmorning snack. Her playmates (who are the gateman’s daughters) came in and since I now saw that she had company and the maid was watching them, I went with the smaller baby to try and get her to sleep. By 1pm, we were both fast asleep. I was awoken by a phone call at about 2.30pm. I didn’t pick the call but it sure did wake me. I noticed that I wasn’t hearing the voices of the three girls I left playing in the living room. At first I thought my daughter was asleep but still decided to call the maid and ask where the kids were. She just said, “Nabaguliddewo nebagenda okuzanya” (I let them go off to play). My heart started to beat fast like I knew something was wrong. I rushed out of the house to see where they had gone, because it is very unusual for my daughter to play quietly. She will at least be fighting for a toy, laughing so loud or crying.

Panic mode I rushed around the compound to look

for my baby but she was nowhere to be found. I run to the gate man’s house and called him to ask where his kids were since I had last seen them with mine. He had no idea either. He came out and we searched and called so loudly all of the kids’ names hoping that at least one would hear and come back. We searched the neighbourhood but nothing. In my heart I knew they had been kidnapped. I didn’t even know what to do now, my heart was pumping so fast, I was shaking in the knees. So as we stood in our compound, completely out of options now thinking of going to make a police report, I see an Ipsum car in the corner of the compound with tinted glasses and I see the head of the one of the kids popping out from the rear of the car. I screamed, “One of the kids is here!!!”

More trouble We rushed to open the the doors but they were all locked. I could see my daughter lying in the back seat not moving an inch. When I thinking of

I was driving like a mad woman but the gate man (who now offered to carry for me my daughter leaving his behind on first aid) kept screaming , “Mama Kayla yanguwa...” getting a stone to hit the window and get them out, the gateman found the boot door open. Two of the kids had completely passed out, and one was only half conscious. My brain froze for a minute. The conscious girl managed to tell us who got them into the car; a boy from the neighbourhood. I rushed though the boot to the back seat where my daughter lay face down in the chair. I started screaming as I pulled her out. I called for water and started to pour it all over her. There was no motion. I could hardly feel a breath come out of her. I then just knew that I had to get her to the nearest clinic. I just put her in the back seat of my car I called to the gateman to bring his children (who were by now vomiting all over him) to the car as well. I was driving like a mad woman but the gate man (who now offered to carry for me my daughter leaving his behind on first aid) kept screaming ,”Mama Kayla yanguwa. Laba amaaso gagenda!!!” Finally we got to hospital and in the emergency room I learnt her oxygen level was now 30 (the normal level is 100)— I think they realised later that her lungs were full of all kinds of fluids and no oxygen was going in. I knelt by her bed holding her hand still chanting,

“Save her Jesus, save her”. About the same time they asked me to step out. In this moment I started

As a mother raising a jolly and healthy soon-to-be three-year-old daughter. I have failed to make sense of Kayla’s situation. It is really sad how one minute of napping can change your everything around you. This is why I am on my knees calling out every one of you to come and support this cause the best way you can. Please, please give Kayla hope!

to lose hope and started to prepare myself for whatever outcome. About an hour later, a doctor came out to talk to me. My brain froze. I didn’t know what she was going to tell me but I was trying to read her face. With tears in my eyes, I asked her to tell me my baby was OK. She just smiled and said, “We hope for the best, keep praying” and added that we needed to go to a hospital with a life support machine since they didn’t have one. Even when the ambulance arrived, we still had to wait another 30 minutes because her condition was so critical and unstable they needed to get her to a point where she could survive for 20 more minutes, as that would be enough time to reach the next hospital. We eventually made it, but when I next saw her, she was hooked to so many wires and tubes.

Bobi Wine holds first musical performance as MP in Malta

S

inger-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has enjoyed a huge share of the news for the past few months. However, much of the news was about Bobi’s successful political story- so far! However, like he highlighted during several media interviews, Bobi is not dropping his microphone as yet. And yes, over the weekend, Bobi flew to Malta where, besides taking a shor t holiday with his wife- Barbie, held his first music performance as an MP. We have it on good authority that Bobi performed at a friend’s wedding ceremony that was held over the weekend. Sources that attended the wedding reliably informed us that Bobi was as good as ever; “He performed like he has always done it; he did it with energy and he was very entertaining.” We have learnt that Bobi had been booked for this particular show way before he started campaigns for the MP slot in Kyadondo East. Bobi is yet to perform for his fans and voters, but we have heard a mega show to celebrate his victory is in the offing.

T

he Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards (ASFAs) 2017 are set to be announced later today at the Kampala Serena Hotel. The fifth edition of one of the continent’s top fashion awards is slated for December 8, this year at the Kampala Serena. Sponsored by Ultra-Premium Vodka- Ciroc, the 2017 ASFAs will run under the theme, “Fashion takeover”. We have also been reliably informed that South African Ciroc ambassador and celebrated designer David Tlale, will be returning for this year’s ASFAs edition. However, Tlale, who wowed with a showcase of his show stopping creations last year, is returning in an even bigger capacity; Tlale will be the overall creative director of the show’s production. Our sources told us the ASFAs organising team and Ciroc have an incredible line-up of events, performers and celebrities that they will be unveiling later this evening when they officially announce the awards.

t’s now clearer than ever before, that class and Lady Charlotte boss- Sara Kizito, are inseparable! Put aside the fact that she has managed to look forever young; this time round we are talking Sara’s new baby- the luxurious BMW X6! Yes, not even all drama surrounding the ownership of Centenary Park could get in Sara’s quest for class! We can reliably reveal that Sarah recently added a red BMW X6 to her fleet that already includes other luxurious rides like the Mercedes Benz 4matic. Sara is said to have unveiled her new sleek ride after coming out on top in the Centenary Park fight that sucked in State House, Parliament, KCCA and National Water and Sewerage Corporation. Could the acquisition of the new monster ride be her way of celebrating overpowering one of the president’s blue-eyed girls?

M

artha Smallz is arguably, one of the most underrated female vocalists we have on the music scene. But after the demise of Airport Taxi— the group that gifted her to us, she found herself with work to do relaunching her music career as a solo artiste. Freshest coming in from Martha is the remix to her urban pop track, on which another sensational vocalist, Maurice Kirya features. This is what I call a deserving remix; both artistes effortlessly complement each other on this track, which they brilliantly allow to totally put them in their musical comfort zone. Running on an instrumental that exudes beats of urban contemporary pop and still leaves room for the RnB crooner to effortlessly belt away, even with a single hearing it is hard to deny this is unique stuff. Martha’s vocals are mellow and so areKirya’s, making for a song that blends soothing with‘feel good’ suave. In the audio, which was produced by Samurae and mastered by Dawoo from Talent Africa, Martha sings to this random gorgeous guy of how he would make a girl go crazy as she tries to be his baby. She talks of this guy being a complete package and all that. And on the song goes rotating around this whole girl wants boy theme. Kirya on the other hand assures the girl that he is the guy for her and asexpected, a typical love circle follows. When it comes to the video, Sasha Vybz goes out of his comfort zone and tries out something fresh on this one. The video has Martha and Kirya as the sole human elements but still doesn’t get boring to the eye. Maurice reads papers as Martha hangs clothes as she checks out the typa guy that would make a man go crazy. Even

ny girl that was in boarding school in the early 2000’s and had some good style going on had a pair of these. Well, they were mostly rubber, in colours like black, pink, and white, but there were still the bomb. And these were a must have, when shopping for the next terms essentials. Now you can still rock this because they are coming back.

How would you describe your style? I would definitely say I lerk more onto the tomboy side with my sneakers and track suits. And that’s purely based on the fact that I used to be a tomboy when I was young. My style is definitely urban street wear with a touch of sexy! I keep it hood but sexy! What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? Hmmm definitely my trainers. All my sneakers compliment me and my personality so there is no way I could live without them!

You can wear these with your mini denim skirt, bermuda shorts or even on your favourite maxi. The latest designs also offer you stylish options that vary from prints, popping shades like gold and silver, and even stripped ones.

What is your worst buy ever? I brought a yellow leather jacket from Zara for the summer online. I hated the complexion of the yellow on my dark skin. It just wasn’t working! What styling trick works for you all the time? Keeping it simple and classy. And not to do the obvious. I love following and keeping up to date with what’s currently trending but you have got to make it your own. Simplicity is key!

When it comes to the don’ts, always keep these shoes casual. They are meant to be worn that way.

Any item we would not find in your wardrobe? Blazer! You won’t find those any blazers in my wardrobe unfortunately. Hahaha

Kyambogo admits 14,000 students

REDUCED TO ONE WEEK K T he much anticipated and billed Makerere Mitchellex Bazaar has been reduced to seven days, from the usual 14 days, Campus Bee reports. The move was pushed by the outgoing Vice Chancellor who insists that the Mitchellex Bazaar is a waste of time and students need to get to studies instead of ‘spending a lot of time aimlessly.’ The organisers of the Bazaar usually pay Shs20m to take part in the exhibition for two weeks. Inside sources tell us that the fee will be reduced to shs10m for bidders interested in handling this year’s Mitchellex Bazaar. Makerere University’s guild President, Kato Paul has written to the deputy Vice Chancellor of administration and finance, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe. In a letter datedJuly 17, Kato writes to the deputy VC requesting for an extension of the Mitchellex Bazaar so as to enable continuing students a chance to buy required items for the academic year. Kato also noted that continuing students are likely to miss out other benefits of the Bazaar such as social gains in case the deadline is not extended.

yambogo University has admitted more than 14,000 former A-level students to various courses on private sponsorship, for the 2017/2018 academic year. According to the list released by the Acting Deputy RegistrarAdmissions Ms Estheri Sekasi,14,236 students have been admitted and they are slated to start their studies on August 12. The academic registrar of the university Dr Peter Okello says that Students can pick up their admission letters from the respective faculties starting July 20 and each applicant is expected to present his/her identity card from their former school, O-level result slip as well as A-level result slip. He notes that students are also supposed to report to campus on August 5, after which they are expected to go through orientation for one week before starting off their studies. The university has admitted more students this academic year compared to last year showing a tremendous increase in the number of students by about 3,000.The University last year 2016/2017 admitted more than 11,500 students. Bachelor of Science in accounting and finance has the highest number of students admitted to it followed by bachelor of business administration and Bachelor of Arts in education on both evening and day programmes. LAUGH & LOVE Multitasking girlfriend Today my girlfriend told me that women are better at multitasking than men so I told her to sit down and shut up. Guess what? She couldn’t do either.

SWEETEST TABOO The sexual push-up Sexual push-ups are a great way to flex your abs for her: Assume the standard push-up position that you would use if you were working out. Then have your partner slide underneath you. This variation on the man-on-top position works extremely well for guys with flat stomachs.

MASTER THE FINE Y

ART OF SEXTING

ou are a man, and you’ve got needs. Luckily, your needs aren’t so selfish: Everyone has them — though they are on a sliding scale, from positive reinforcement to straightup naughty stuff. If you’re playing the online dating game, you will encounter potential matches who fall everywhere along this spectrum, but, the digital dating revolution has evolved the rules of courtship and “sexting” is pretty much a part of the chase these days, and it’s important to know how to approach the game keeping in mind that once you have sexted, you can’t unsext.

State your end goal

Be intentional: This person should know if your motive is a hookup or harmless dirty exchange, or if you are still interested in dating after everything is said and done. This way, nobody gets hurt, and hopefully, both parties are still on board for fun — in person, or just via text.

If there’s resistance…

Sexting isn’t for everyone. If your partner

is hesitant about sexting, then it doesn’t mean he or she is any less interested in you; it just means that they don’t get the same kick out of digital flirtation. Besides, the most important thing is the chemistry.

Read the ‘mood’

Don’t send pics of your junk

Guys, guys, please! Nobody wants a picture of your private parts. They generally are… not pretty. They may be a little nicer to see in person, if it’s someone a girl cares for and is attracted to. But in a picture? No. Just no. For many girls, getting a picture of their man shirtless in bed, with a soft smile on his face, is so much more sexy.

Know how to approach the game keeping in mind that once you have sexted, you can’t unsext.

Sexting can be just as vulnerable as actual sex, so take care to figure a few things out; is his profile photo buttoned up, and is he asking you about your job? Take it slower. Does she describe herself as “a lady in the street but a freak in the sheets?” Yes? Then sext away; the door is open.

Learn their comfort level

You know how we all have different definitions of “hooking up”? For some people, it is as harmless as making out, but for others the term is used to describe intercourse. You should assume the same with sexting — your intensity may not match your partner’s. Let’s pretend your partner is on board for a little naughty texting. Don’t jump in with a nude photo and expect one in return. It’s perfectly OK to ask your partner about his or her level of comfort. However, hopefully you can play off their cues, too, because the spontaneity has its own stimulating value.

SCI-FACT

Happy wife means happy life, for real Why it’s important: Well, because the pursuit of both women and happiness are pretty much the only reason for your existence.

A long story short: In a study of 394 older couples, researchers from two universities proved your dad right: The old adage that states “a happy wife is a happy life” is true. When the wives in the study reported higher satisfaction with their marriages, their husbands reported feeling happier overall. Now, the full story

The saying “a happy wife is a happy life” has been around for what seems like forever. Before, everyone assumed it was a playful saying. Now, according to researchers from Rutgers University and the University of Michigan, it’s anything but tongue-in-cheek: It’s the truth. Their study was a little unique in that it was exclusively older couples, with at least one spouse in all 394 couples being at least 60 years old. On average, the couples had been married 39 years. The participants were surveyed on a number of topics, ranging from how much their spouse appreci-

ates them to whether or not they get on their nerves. Overall, everyone was pretty happy — most people rated their overall happiness a five out of six. The biggest trend to emerge was that when the wife is more satisfied with (specifically) the marriage, the husband’s overall happiness rating increases. Men, as it turns out, were ever-so-slightly more satisfied with their end of the marriage. But the big question: Why is it that the men constantly fight to stay in the wives’ good books and not the other way around?

t was such a horrible sight. Whenever I asked the doctor to tell me about the status, they would just say, “Don’t stop praying”. Close relatives started to flock in and how supportive they were! For four days, my Micheala was in a coma and the doctors kept wondering why she wasn’t waking up yet the CT scan we did on day two showed that the brain appeared normal. They decided to do a second CT scan. I remember the day we received the results. It was midnight and I read through, there were lots of big words so I googled. As I searched them one by one, my brain froze. I rushed to look for a doctor to explain them to me. Hoping she would say something different from what I had read but no. It was true my little girl had suffered a hipoxic brain damage in the part responsible for vision and movement—so there was a possibility of blindness. I cried so hard I don’t even remember ever crying like that. The pain I had in my heart, you would not wish on your worst enemy. My husband couldn’t even leave me at the hospital that night. We sat together at the door of the ICU through the night.

The days passed and slowly by slowly she started to move to move her fingers. Each day she was doing something new, and I learnt that with this condition you have to celebrate even the tiniest change. So the day she kept her eyes open for 30 minutes, the day she put her tongue out, the day she cried for the first time, the day she moved her whole arm, all these were very exciting moments. Slowly, the doctors started to reduce how much oxygen they were pushing into her. About 10 days later, they took it all off completely because she could now breathe on her own. This was by far the biggest achievement. All this time she was staying awake for longer but we realised that indeed she could not see. I couldn’t believe my little girl was now blind. We were not sure whether she could hear us either but we kept talking to her and playing her favourite cartoons. Soon we left intensive care because they determined that her level of consciousness had improved. We were seeing apparently the best neurologist for children. He always sounded optimistic about her condition. Weeks later, after we were discharged from the hospital, it felt as if we had just had a newborn. We had to train her everything from scratch. Can’t see, can’t sit, can’t hold her neck up, can’t eat, talk. We had to hold her for most of the day. We started physiotherapy hoping that she would become her cheerful and playful self just like that. I have not met anyone who passed through the same story. Most people who talk about kids that were locked in cars name the ones that died.

“It’s a painful story to tell but I kept telling myself that if speaking out could save even one life, it would be worth it....” In this short period, I have learnt one thing, ignorance is very expensive. If the kid that locked the boot door knew how dangerous it was to do so, maybe things would be different today. We got more than 150 visitors at the clinic, but over half of them had never heard of something like this. Most had no idea how dangerous a car can be. Most were in shock recalling how many times they left their kids in the car to enter a shopping mall. Some even telling you how some kids died in such incidents. Personally, I had only ever heard of one incident in the US. It’s a painful story to tell but I kept telling myself that if speaking out could save even one life, it would be worth it. Let’s educate the maids at home and the gatemen. Let’s be keen and watchful and keen on where the kids are. You can never be too careful when protecting kids. In the meantime Micheala needs. all the prayer that she can get that the good Lord may restore all her senses and make her normal again. Please always have her in your prayers. Thank you.”

reasure your family love, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat everyone well and stay friendly with your neighbors.” (Attributed to Steve Jobs, founder of Apple). Most people would agree that Steve Jobs is probably the greatest entrepreneur who ever lived, and the greatest tech innovator of our times. The company he founded, Apple, is the most valuable company in the world, with a market value today of nearly $750bn. Now this is more than twice the size of the South African economy, and almost a third of the GDP of the whole of continental Africa! Apple is a phenomenal company, and will no doubt be amongst the top contenders for the first “trillion-dollar company” (expected within five years). Steve Jobs died in 2011 at age 56, after contracting a very aggressive form of cancer. As one of the richest men in the world, he tried every possible cure that medical science had at the time, including experimental drugs; it

all failed. A friend recently shared with me something he was supposed to have said just before he died. I say “supposed” because when you read something on the Internet you have to be cautious about its authenticity. Please read these touching words with that in mind, and may I be forgiven if it is not true. It is important wisdom nonetheless. Words attributed to Steve Jobs, before he died: “I have come to the pinnacle of success in business. In the eyes of others, my life has been the symbol of success. However, apart from work, I have little joy. Finally, my wealth is simply a fact to which I am accustomed. At this time, lying on the hospital bed and remembering all my life, I realize that all the accolades and riches of which I was once so proud, have become insignificant with my imminent death. In the dark, when I look at green lights, of the equipment for artificial respiration and feel the buzz of their mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of my

approaching death looming over me. Only now do I understand that once you accumulate enough money for the rest of your life, you have to pursue objectives that are not related to wealth. It should be something more important: For example, stories of love, art, dreams of my childhood. No, stop pursuing wealth, it can only make a person into a twisted being, just like me. God has made us one way, we can feel the love in the heart of each of us, and not illusions built by fame or money, like I made in my life, I cannot take them with me. I can only take with me the memories that were strengthened by love. This is the true wealth that will follow you; will accompany you, he will give strength and light to go ahead. Love can travel thousands of miles and so life has no limits. Move to where you want to go. Strive to reach the goals you want to achieve. Everything is in your heart and in your hands.

What is the world’s most expensive bed? The hospital bed. You, if you have money, you can hire someone to drive your car, but you cannot hire someone to take your illness that is killing you. Material things lost can be found. But one thing you can never find when you lose: life... Whatever stage of life where we are right now, at the end we will have to face the day when the curtain falls. Please treasure your family love, love for your spouse, love for your friends... Treat everyone well and stay friendly with your neighbors.” When I had my team try to find the original source of this quote, they came back and said they couldn’t confirm when these words were said by Steve Jobs and that many reports said they weren’t. I then asked myself, “Does this take away from this profound message about the things that matter most?” I have reserved my comments for my afterthoughts.

aving lost his mother when he was only seven Alex Kawuma ended up at one of his uncles in Kalangala, where the family was sustained by the earnings from an indigenous onion farm. That

early interaction with the crop would come to tell on Alex’s choices in life. When Alex completed his Senior Six in 2011 he tried doing different jobs, including as an attendant in one of the tile shops in town, but after going six months without pay he quit and returned to the village. It was around this time that he decided to try out growing onions. When he consulted, he was advised by one of his uncle’s friends to grow garlic instead. Even if he was aware garlic takes longer than onions before it is ready for harvest (six months as opposed to the four months for onions), Kawuma wasn’t in the least discouraged.

“A sack of garlic costs up to Shs140,000 whereas that of the local type costs between Shs70,000 to Shs120,000,” ....

Advantages of garlic

“The advantage with garlic is that it is pest and disease resistant, requires little attention when it sprouts and its returns are also higher compared to the local type of onions. “A sack of garlic costs up to Shs140,000 whereas that of the local type costs between Shs70,000 to Shs120,000,” Alex told us. According to the young farmer, garlic grows well in loamy soft soils. To start, he invested Shs800,000 to buy seedlings from the nearby outgrowers and was lucky to have two acres of free land at his uncle’s home in Kalangala. After his first harvest in 2013, Alex recalled he made about Shs600,000 in profit after delivering his garlic to Nakasero Market. As time went by, he was able to link to Kenyan garlic traders who helped him to grow his market base. Now harvesting at least 15 sacks of the crop every harvest season, the 25-year-old Alex has garlic to thank for his newly opened plumbing hardware shop in Makindye.

Is hiring an interior designer necessary?

HOME TIP

N

ot everyone has the time, creative instincts or the desire to create a stylish house – that is why interior designers are there to help you. But when you consider that hiring one comes with cost implications, it is about time you asked if hiring an interior designer is necessary in the first place? It is possible you want to handle the finer design aspects of your house by yourself, but here’s the thing; interior designers can save you both time and money. But the most important aspect

“ To create your dream interior without hiring an interior designer might require a lot of time researching and planning....” of hiring one, says real estate website Ritten House, is that a specialist interior designer helps you to narrow down the wide range of options when it comes to details such as wall colour, flooring, trim color etc, ultimately helping you feel confident that the overall result of your house project will turn out exactly how you want. In a nutshell, a good interior designer should be able to interpret your needs and present you with a dream house in line with your tastes and budget.

What do interior designers do differently?

Inte rior designers are specialised in designing moods and atmospheres to suit your desire. As a result of their experience and contacts in the industry, they are able to provide options for your space, as well as guide you to get the most out of your budget. Using their great creative skills, interior designers are able to minimise costs whilst maximising output and getting amazing results.

Is hiring an interior designer cost efficient?

Since interior designers are able to get the most out of a small budget, they may help you save money in the designing, decorating and planning process, especially for commercial. However, a specialist interior designer may not be the best option if you are able to creatively decorate and re-arrange your property by yourself. It is possible for amateurs to create stunning interior designs for their property, using Do-It-Yourself solutions, without paying for professional help.

How you can decorate without a designer

To create your dream interior without hiring an interior designer might require a lot of time researching and planning. You will need to consider the size of your property and how to work with available space to achieve the beautiful design you desire. Remember, an interior designer can also help to reshape and renovate the space available, not just decorate, which is often a job too large to undertake yourself. If it is important that you save time, hiring a professional interior designer makes sense.

he Rugby Cranes have been almost faultless in their Gold Cup campaign, winning games against Senegal in Dakar and a record 78-17 thrashing of Tunisia at Legends last week, adding that to a credible 33-all stalemate in Kenya that opened Uganda`s campaign. The two wins and a draw have seen Uganda tally go to 11 points and in the process occupy third place on the log behind Kenya and Namibia—the African champions who are fresh from a 31-26 win over the Zimbabweans. Namibia return to Uganda having beaten the Cranes 3140 last year at Kyadondo in the same tourney although Uganda can be forgiven for dreaming of an upset even with the odds stacked against them. Uganda has vastly improved and recalled a bunch of experienced players like Scot Oluoch along with half centurions Alex Mubiru and Mathias Ochwo.

“Of course we expect to win; no one goes into rugby game expecting to lose,” Cranes captain Brian Odongo said after a session at Legends. “They are African champions but we fancy ourselves, we have worked hard enough and we just need to believe in ourselves and approach the game like we have done to the previous ones,” he added. Namibia has rolled over every opponent that has come their way so far; with 7-53, 95-0 and 31-26 victories over Senegal, Tunisia and Zimbabwe respectively. It is the kind of form they hope to carry to Kampala when they touchdown today.

ollowing a goalless draw in Juba a week ago, Uganda Cranes will this Saturday aim to deliver the knockout blow against South Sudan at the Star Times (previously Philip Omondi) Stadium in Lugogo. A triumph over the South Sudanese in the return leg of the CHAN 2018 qualifier will set up a date against either Rwanda or Tanzania—the big prize being a place in the finals which Kenya is set to host early next year. Our boys only managed a 0-0 draw despite creating lots of goal scoring opportunities, even going as far missing a penalty but according to head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic, the team has been working on all the errors they made in the first leg. “We missed a lot of chances but the positive is we were offensive. We have been working on that in training and I hope for the best this time,” he stated. The CHAN tournament happens once every two years and features only those Uganda Cranes head coach, footballers who play Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredejovic the game in their home countries.
