DONALD TRUMP:
The man everyone loves to hate H
e is the US president elect, but even before that Donald John Trump was one of America’s bestknown business and television personalities. His business interests include real estate, gaming, sports and entertainment. Even though he has made his share of mistakes and is generally perceived as an average manager, he is an excellent example of a charismatic leader. At a young age, he became involved with some of the largest profitable building projects in Manhattan and also opened the Grand Hyatt, earning much fame as the city’s best known developer. Trump is a power oriented business leader and celebrity, possessing an autocratic leadership style. His extravagant lifestyle and outspoken manner have earned him a celebrity status which is amplified by the success of his NBC reality show, ‘The Apprentice’ which also became an offshoot for ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’. He was on the 14th position on the Forbes celebrity 100 list of 2013 and the financial magazine now estimates his wealth at $3.7 Billion.
The US president- elect is not one many gave a chance. The business magnet came off as crass, unpolished, ungentlemanly, with a loose tongue and quick fingers to type insults on Twitter. But he beat Hillary Clinton to the Oval office, writesOur Reporter
Early life
Trump was born in New York City, to a builder and real estate developer Frederick Trump whose father was a German immigrant and his wife Mary McLeod, a Scott. He was one of the five children. At the age of 13, his parents sent him to New York Military Academy (NYMA) in where he performed well, both socially and academically; emerging as a star athlete and student leader by the time he graduated in 1964. He was at Fordham University for two years before joining the Wharton School of Finance at the University Of Pennsylvania, from where he graduated in economics in 1968.
Major works
In 1974, he obtained the option to buy two rail yards in New York City and after few years with the help of 40-year tax abatement from the government, he bought and turned the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt and also created the ‘Trump organization’. In 1980, he undertook the project of constructing the Wollman Rink in Central Park and completed it in six months using $750,000 of the remaining $3 million budget. In the same year, he renovated the Trump tower in New York City and Atlantic City casino business which led to huge debt. In 2001, he completed the Trump world tower, which was a 72-storey residential tower across the UN headquarters. He also began construction on Trump plaza along the Hudson River. In 2006, he bought the Menie estate in
Balmadie, Aberdeen shire, Scotland to create the best golf course in the world on a site of special scientific interest (SSS) but it was met with criticism from environmentalists and by local landowners. But the battle became more difficult this year when the Scottish government approved the construction of a wind farm nearby. He has hosted many wrestle mania events in Trump Plaza and has been an active participant in several of the shows. On June 15, 2009 he bought the WWE RAW show from WWE owner Vince McMohan. He wrote many books which became famous worldwide for their entrepreneurial guidance. They include;,‘Trump: The Art of the Deal’, ‘Think big: Make it happen in Business and Life’, ‘Think like a champion: An Informal Education in Business and Life’, ‘Trump 101: The Way to Success’, ‘Trump: How to Get Rich’, ‘Trump: Surviving at the Top’, etc.
BUSINESS CAREER He joined his father’s company, ‘Elizabeth Trump and Son’, while still in college. The company focused on middle-class rental housing in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. In 1971, he moved to Studio apartment in Manhattan, New York and became involved with larger building projects. In the following year, he finalized first multi-million dollar real estate transaction with the sale of Swifton village in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1985, he bought Mar-a-lago estate in Palm beach, Florida and renovated the Barbizon hotel and 100 Central Park South. In 1988, he bought the Plaza Hotel in New York City. In 1989, he bought a fleet of Boeing 727 airplanes to form Trump air shuttle service. The business unfortunately collapsed. By 1989, poor business decisions left him unable to meet loan payments but he somehow financed the construction of his third casino, the $1 million Taj Mahal. The increasing debt soon brought him to business bankruptcy. In 1990, he regained his previous stable financial position and fame and opened the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City. In 1996, he got the ownership of Miss Universe Organisation which produces the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA pageants. In 2003, he became joint partner with the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) where he became the executive producer and host of the NBC reality show, ‘The Apprentice’ which became a huge success. Following its success, he co-produced a show, ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’ along with British TV producer Mark Burnett. On October 21, 2004, Trump Hotels and Casino & Resorts declared a restructuring of its debt which led to a reduction in his individual ownership from 56 percent to 27 percent. The company applied for Chapter 11 Protection in November and soon the company re-emerged from bankruptcy as ‘Trump Entertainment Resorts Holdings’. He marketed the Trump name on large number of products, including ‘Trump Financial’, ‘Trump Sales and Leasing’, ‘Trump Entrepreneur initiative’, ‘Trump Restaurants’, ‘Go TRUMP’, ‘Donald J. Trump signature collection’, etc. Moreover, he also received $1.5m for every one-hour presentation he did for ‘The Learning Annex’. He also has a business simulation game called ‘Donald Trump’s Real Estate Tycoon’.

personal life In 1977, he married Ivana Zelnickova and had three children from her, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric. The couple called off their marriage in 1992 when Ivana discovered his extramarital love affair with an American actress Marla Maples. In 1993, he married Marla Maples and they had one child Tiffany two months before their marriage. In 1997, he filed for a highly publicised divorce with Maples which was finalised in June 1999. The divorce agreement allotted $2 million to Maples. On January 22, 2005, he married Melania Knauss at Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church, on the island of Palm Beach, Florida, after proposing to her the previous year. They have a son together named Barron William Trump. In 2011, he claimed in an interview to be a Presbyterian within the Protestant group after gaining the membership of New York City’s ‘Marble Collegiate Reformed Protestant Dutch Church’.
Trump trivia
n Donald Trump is a teetotaler and has never smoked cigarettes or done drugs. n He is a germophobe and hates shaking hands. When faced with the inevitable situation of shaking hands, he has an interesting technique of avoiding it; he vigorously pulls the other person close into his body. n At one time, he acted as a financial advisor to Mike Tyson and hosted Tyson’s fight against Michael Spinks in Atlantic City. n Donald Trump is confidence personified. In fact, at times his over-the-top confidence borders on braggadocio. In 2004, he was quoted in The Daily News saying, “All of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me— consciously or unconsciously. That’s to be expected.” n Though Trump has been a very successful businessman, in hindsight, he has wasted some brilliant business opportunities. In 1988, he had the opportunity to buy the Patriots, a professional American football team, but he turned down the offer because he didn’t think it was a good investment. The team is now worth more than $2 billion. n He has his own board game, titled Trump: The Game. Trump has the dubious distinction of winning the Razzie Award for worst supporting actor for the film ‘Ghosts Can’t Do It’, in 1990. He played himself in the movie. n He is a golfer and a member of the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, and plays regularly at the other courses he owns and operates.

Politics
In the 2000 elections he expressed his wish to run as a third-party candidate for the US presidency. For 2004 and 2008, he speculated about running for president in the Republican Party and in between in 2006, he considered running for governor of New York as a representative of the party. He again registered as a Republican in 2009 after having registered with the Democratic Party in 2001 and campaigned for it. In 2010-2012, his involvement in politics returned when he publicly announced his consideration of candidature for presidency. He won the Republican primaries earlier in the year. Not one to mince words, his campaign rubbed many the wrong way. “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringning crime, they’re rapists. We’re going to build the wall and we’re going to stop it. It’s going to end,” he said of illegal Mexican immigrants.

LETTER TO MY MANGO PEOPLE

There is this world and then there is the women’s A
clip has been doing rounds on social media and leaving many people regretting why they clicked to watch it. In the clip, KCCA law enforcement officials are seen roughing up a woman street vendor they were arresting. The woman had with her two children, one strapped on her back. At least that is how I saw it.Whether that clip is legit or doctored is for another day. What is clear is that the arrest, as captured on the video, was repugnant for even imagination. The older child is carried with some dignity but the mother and the baby strapped on her back are treated like carcass. This mother, more than the safety of the baby on her back, struggles for something ‘left behind.’ My conclusion is that what she was struggling to get back to is her merchandise. If that was the case, you can only imagine the prize of the merchandise to this mother if she can pay more attention to it than to the safety of the baby on her back. And then came a charlatan. This corporate guy, seemingly doing PR work for KCCA, arrogantly told others on social media that there is the law and the woman appeared to resist arrest, hence the brutal and sickening arrest. This corporate charlatan justified the actions on the woman vendor and her baby, this corporate charlatan who is married with a daughter, a man who was born of a woman and raised by one.Why would more than 20 law enforcement officers effect the arrest of a single mother so ruthlessly that her kids are put in danger? The fact that the woman appeared concerned about her merchandise was enough reason to suggest that is was more of life and death to her family. Sadly, that is the story of many a Mango mother in this once Pearl of Africa banana republic; risking everything, including the safety of their children, to put bread on the family table. While I was blue with sadness over the treatment of the vendor mom, a friend comes to my inbox and proclaims Donald Trump the 46th President of the United States of America. On querying, he says, “I want Trump to win for a strong America.” “So how would a Clinton presidency weaken America?” I ask. “Woman… women can’t fight wars…. Like it or not, it is a fact, women are lesser beings. God created it like that,” he said. I showed him a stiff middle finger and said I wouldn’t be continuing the chat. Mark you, this is a graduate, a practicing journalist so it can’t be about some illiterate charcoal seller from Mabira.Forget the American presidential race. We are not voters, our voice doesn’t count. Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, the mango in our banana republic will remain sour and constipation will continue to make us fart dust. Nothing will change. So this is a woman vs man thing.I know the journalist inbox is not a woman. Had he been one and been to labour ward, she probably would have had an idea what fighting war is like while giving birth. Still, I wondered if he considers his mother such an inferior being. Strangely, his father passed on. His mother still lives, so much for being weak as ordained by God. You look around you and history books say there have been as many as 49 women leading their nations in human history. Forget Cleopatra or Queen Seon Deok ,who reigned as Queen Regnant of Silla, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, from 632 to 647. We are talking about modern democracies with the likes of Angela Merkel, Margaret Thatcher, Cristina Fernandez, and, coincidentally, Park Geun-hye of South Korea. What is there to suggest that SirLeaf Ellen-Johnson is a lesser leader than Yoweri Museveni of Uganda?Do you have such a friend who went to school with girls, was always trailing girls in class, has a woman manager in their workplace, but goes around saying women are lesser being as ordained by God? If not, you must be lucky. And if you are that kind of man, chauvinism is so Stone Age

Over the weekend, we bumped into David Lutalo- he of the Gunsitula hit fame and we were appreciative of his ride! The ever neat Lutalo stepped out of his new white Harrier registration no. UAZ 781D, with the same swag Bobi Wine steps out of his Tundra! After pressing the remote, Lutalo went around his ride as if emphasising that ‘he would choose it again 10 times, if he was asked to! The singer who had checked in at Face Studio in Bugolobi, for a photo shoot with his girlfriend and their two children, inspected the car thrice in the 45 minutes or so that they spent at the studios. igerian singer Joy Odiete aka J’odie is on her way to Kampala. N We have been reliably informed that
the Kuchi Kuchi (Oh Baby) singer will be gracing singer Sheebah Karungi’s debut Nkwatako concert slated for December 2. According to sources in Team No Sleep, Sheebah and her manager Jeff Kiwa were approached by Jodie’s management during their recent trip to South Africa for the MAMAs where Sheebah was a nominee. “During the conversation, Jeff mentioned that Sheebah will be having her maiden concert. J’odie’s manager said they had always wanted to perform in Kampala and he immediately inquired if it was OK for her to be part of the concert,” the source told us. The source added that Jeff and Sheebah accepted the offer with glee and are looking forward to share a stage with J’odie. The Nigerian songstress came to the music scene as one the finalists in the premier edition of Idols, West Africa. She released her first set of singles: Fighter and Kuchi Kuchi (Oh baby) in late 2010. Kuchi Kuchi instantly went viral. The Kuchi Kuchi video attracted four nominations in the Nigerian Music Video Awards, of which J’odie carried home two.
Wizkid coming with 20-man team izkid continues to prove that he W is by far Africa’s most trending singer at the moment. First, the Carol singer asked for a whopping $140,000 (about Shs462m), to perform in Kampala. The latest on our desk is that Wizkid will be flying in with a 20-man squad for his December concert in Kampala. FORMER MISS UG MWIMA Sharon Kaisiki bags Sanyu FM’s expecting third child Sound of Kampala Shs2.2m cash F ormer Miss Uganda 2008/09 Dorah Mwima was out of the country for some time, but she returns with a lot of changes. For starters, Mwima is already a mother of two! And yes, to answer any doubting Thomases; Mwima made it clear that she had both children with her hubby Nader Barrak. Mwima made it a point to clear this bit because of stories that run in various tabloids in the past years; “They kept saying things about my marriage that were totally untrue, so I don’t wanna take chances,” she told us. But that’s not the news; the real news is that Mwima is also expecting her third child. When we met the beauty queen a few days back, we were quick to notice her bulging tummy. And Mwima wasted no time confirming to us; “Yes, I am pregnant.” In other news, Mwima is also set to host her annual celebrity soccer fundraiser on December 17 at Kabira Country Club. We shall furnish you with details as they emerge. For now, join us to wish Mwima the best as she prepares to welcome baby number three!
anyu FM continued its trend of rewarding listeners through variS ous promotions this week, with a lucky
listener Ms Sharon Celina Kaisiki went home richer with a whopping Shs2.2m after she cracked a puzzle that had gone almost a year unanswered. Kaisiki guessed the right answer for the Sound of Kampala; a promotion that features in the Drive Show hosted by Crystal & David in the spotlight. Kaisiki managed to guess that the sound was simply that of someone putting a lid back on a pen! Several listeners had made attempts to identify the sound on
programmes that run from Monday to Friday for at least a year. “Every week day, at 6:20am, listeners get a chance to win Shs10,000 by guessing the sound played. In case of failure, the money keeps accumulating by Shs10,000 until the right sound is gotten,” Andrew, the Sanyu FM promotions executive told us. “We [even] decided that Crystal and David give a number of clues to guide the listeners. The clues were still as vague: ‘It’s found in David’s bathroom and not in Crystal’s bathroom!’ ‘It’s not a machine, it’s a friend of paper and it’s 5,000 years old,’ among others,” Andrew told us. A cheerful Kaisiki was handed her cash at Sanyu FM’s offices at Crane Chambers yesterday.

Bebe Cool takes on Naija on Azina Aseka B talking
ebe Cool kept his promise of realising a new song every month for the next 15 months with Azina Aseka on November 1. The song shows that Bebe Cool is not one to be put in a box as he keeps experimenting with different genres to the delight of his legion of fans. On this particular one, the two years in a row MTV MAMA nominee decided to take a shot at the West Africa beats. With Azina Aseka, Bebe confirms that he is in pursuit of the Nigerian market as he punches in a few lyrics in the Nigerian pidgin accent. True to Bebe Cool music, it still has a dance vibe to it and is expected to draw people to the dance floor. With Azina Aseka, could Bebe be launching his way into the Nigerian market or he is just showing that he can do just as well, what the Nigerian artistes do. The jury is out on this one.

Trends I Slaying I Killing It
Unitards ARE TRENDING Yousef Crew F or all my curvy sisters, today’s tip is especially dedicated to you. Well, I believe Unitards need to be placed over the right body type, and curves.
celeb style
How would you describe your style? I keep it low-key but outstanding. I prefer not to over dress but at the same time make a statement What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? I can’t live without a watch on my wrist.
This body hugging piece is a great way to pull off a sexy but covered up look.
What is your worst buy ever? I bought
a new Balance shoe that wasn’t impressive at all. I ordered it online and when it got to me, it wasn’t what I had in mind at all. That has to definitely be my worst buy.
Depending on what your style is, you can wear your Unitard with a duster coat, or simply have a bomber jacket to complete the look.
What styling trick works for you all the time? Polo shirts and designer fitting tees work for me, no matter the occasion. Given my line of business when I throw on a pair of good Jeans, any of these items are a quick fix.
You can wear this on the weekend, or even an evening look. When it comes to the footwear to wear with your Unitard, anything from heels, to thigh high boots goes.
Any item we would not find in your wardobe? You most definitely won’t find baggy outfits in my collection. They say old is good but to me, that trend won’t work for me.
Word of advice; do not wear this to work, ever!

OUR CRUSH
V
ictoria University started a quiz night last Friday evening. Unlike your usual straight jacket quiz, this was held at the Victoria Café at the Jinja Road based university and students engaged themselves in a question and answer sessions while sipping on juice, soda and bites. People passing by kept peeping into the eat out asking themselves what was really happening not knowing that serious business was going on inside with groups of four people answering different random questions for five marks and when someone failed to answer it correctly after raising up their hands, another member from another group was given three marks if they answered it well. Questions varied from Maths, English, sports and entertainment. The winning group which happened to be group C with members Ibra Kimbugwe, Jonathan Mulungi, Mathew Simon Okema and Mariah Peggy Nabunya walking away with a cash price of Shs40,000 while group D with members Joshua Mutegheki, Daniel Labwe, John Paul Olinga and Peace Pimer came second and received shs20,000. According to Keith Mugabi, the university’s guild president, the event will be happening every second Friday of the month. “Besides interacting and having a good time, the quiz night helps us to widen our knowledge in various fields that we were paying less attention to,” he said. “As time goes on, it’s going to become bigger and better and become one of the university’s cultures,” he said.

Mbarara Uni students strike over retake fees
M
barara University of Science and Technology (MUST) students have joined the list of striking public universities accusing university authorities of introducing a costly retake policy. Students say before the new policy, any student that failed an exam was required to sit a supplementary paper at no cost and a retake was only issued after that student failed a supplementary paper. However, the University management insists the policy should be phased out and retakes should be issued as it is in other universities. The new policy also requires payment of Shs200,000 in retake fees per paper failed and in the event of failing two papers, one has to repeat the whole academic year, which was not the case before. Ezra Niwamanya, the president of Private Students Association said they raised their concerns to the vice chancellor who advised them to submit a written document after consulting with other universities.
Voting at Kyambogo University goes electronic
T
he ICT team at Kyambogo University management has introduced an E-voting system to be used during elections. While addressing students at the Guild House, Senior Administrative Officer David Kasuuti unveiled the system siting the innovation’s importance in reducing voting irregularities and aptness. Kasuuti came along with a team “We carried out consultations and discovered that of all public universities, Kyambogo University was paying the highest retake fees of Shs30,000 and Gulu University was paying the lowest at Shs6,000 but MUST decides to hike the fees up to Shs200,000,” Niwamanya said. He said after writing to the management, the fee was reduced to Shs50,000 instead of the Shs20,000 they had requested.
Niwamanya also argues that the policy that requires students who fail two papers to repeat the entire academic year is unfair and should be dropped. “This is unfair; some of them have 14 course units which you cannot guarantee to pass,” he added. Students also decried the poor sanitation accusing the administration of failing to solve the problem of poor toilet facilities at the institution which they said are in a very poor state.
from the ICT department of the university who are the brains behind the innovation. The ICT team demonstrated to the Guild leaders how the E-voting system works. However, this did not go down well with some students who criticised the management for not involving them in such big developments.

Keep receding gums in check
G
um recession is a general dental problem which is usually associated with poor dental hygiene. It is often ignored because it’s a very gradual condition that only gets attention when other problems start to occur such as red, swollen and bleeding gums, tooth ache, sensitivity, abscesses in the gum, tooth mobility and teeth appearing larger than usual. If left unattended, it could lead to premature loss of teeth. The other causes of gum recession include gum diseases (specifically bacterial diseases that occur in the gums).
Take lots of green tea
Regular consumption of green tea has several health benefits among which is dental health. This is because of its antioxidant
relate Unlocking the matters of the heart
and anti-inflammatory properties. Sip green tea once or twice a day and allow the tannins in the beverage to do the work.
Coconut or aloe vera oil
The medium chain triglycerides in coconut/aloe vera oil have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Take a pinch of fine salt and mix it with a bit of coconut oil. Pour on a cotton swab and use to massage the gums at least twice a day.
Lemon oil
Oil obtained from lemon peel is particularly effective when it comes to treating receding gums. This is so because of its antiseptic and anti-microbial properties. Add at least 10 drops of lemon oil in a cup of warm water and gargle. Alternatively, you could mix about three drops with a teaspoonful of coconut oil and rub on your gums. This also helps in keeping your mouth free from bad odour.
Eucalyptus oil
These infections damage the gum tissue leading to gum recession and subsequently other problems. Brushing teeth aggressively can also lead to your gums receding. This is because such a forceful act is likely to wear away the enamel that is supposed to protect your teeth and gums. Smoking is could also cause your gums to recede since the consumption of tobacco produces the sticky plague on the teeth that makes the gums recede. Hormonal changes especially in women may also lead to gum recession because they make the gums very sensitive and vulnerable. Habits like grinding one’s teeth or clenching them could also make your gums recede, while receding gums are at times a hereditary issue- if your genes are the reason for the recession then there is nothing much you can do about it. That said, however, there are various simple remedies that can help return your gums to their original form or prevent them from receding.
SNATCH ANOTHER MAN'S GIRL
Eucalyptus oil has plenty of properties that are highly beneficial health-wise and helping in the relief of periodontal disease is one of them. Massage your gums with this oil at least once a day.
Lemongrass
Because of its anti-fungal and antiseptic properties, lemongrass is also highly effective when treating gums. Boil 2-3 stems in water to make a pleasantly lemony mouth gargle.

It’s not stealing if she agrees to walk away with you
W
hat was it they said about the heart wanting what the heart wants? So it is okay to win over a girl from the other side to yours as long as it is not in a manipulative or aggressive manner. Before we go any further discussing how you are going to seduce another man’s girl, we need to get a few things straight. For starters, have you thought about exactly what you want from your subject of desire or you are one of these people who want something only because it belongs to someone else? If you are that kind then you are a pathological snatcher and that is not only when it comes to women. Unless you are in urgent need for an ego boost at the expense of another
man’s, snatching a girl is even harder than you might think because of the psychological and social stress factors associated with it. When a girl cheats (which is what will be the case when she’s seeing you on the side) society will consider her a slut or cheap at best; very few relationships that start this way ever end up in something meaningful. And here’s another flash; because you are in competition, you are trying to outsmart the other dude which means you are going to have to be everything that he is not. It also means that you are subsequently trying to be everything that you are not. Unless the other guy is abusing her in anyway, you are not any different from him-because let’s face it, there’s only one way to wear pants; one leg at a time. Now there’s the part where you try to sleep with her at every possible chance you get. You are in a rush even when you are normally the type that
takes things slow. You have this amazing insight that the moment you show her all your bedroom tricks she will come screaming your name from the other side. Dude! Here is the shocker, girls are not that physically oriented. A girl will stay with a one-minute-man for ages if she loves him enough. So you succeed in seducing her, then thought of her being snatched from you the same way you snatched her will forever haunt you if you decide to take her for keeps. You will need an extra pair of eyes at the back of your head to keep this one. You have won the battle and some other man’s ex or soon to be ex is now your bae but sorry to have to burst your bubble, she is just like all those pretty single ladies you sidelined. This is where your test of worth begins. Will you work equally hard to keep her the same way you worked to snatch her?

How to make your face appear thinner
W
e all love to look collected and having a few pounds magically disappear from the face can give us that look. Yes, even supermodels can have that face that looks like it wouldn’t mind a few lost pounds. It’s all about using makeup to enhance your favorite features by playing with colours and proportionsoptical illusion style. Let’s check out these simple tricks:
·
Use art techniques when applying makeup. Dark colours recede while light colours bring features forward. Invest in two shades that are deeper than your skin tone and a highlighter that’s a bit lighter.
·
To make a nose appear thinner, swipe a contour powder down the sides of the bridge and stop before you get to the nostrils. For better effect, blend with a highlighter.
·
Full lips have a habit of making a face appear bigger. Stay away from dark lipstick. The more natural the colour the better.
·
Unlike lips, eyes made to look bigger make the rest of the face appear smaller. Play up your eyes with liner,
shadow and mascara.
·
Work your eyebrows to emphasize the shape of your face. The higher the brow arch, the longer and thinner the face.
·
For a perfect illusion of a facelift, never forget the forehead. Blend your shades upward into your temples and around the hair line. This will emphasize the angular qualities of your bone structure.

s it me or do I always see mothers walking beside their children and it’s the parent on the safer side of the road while the child is on the side where a car could just slash her off the ground? Then another category of parents are those that drive while children are standing at the front with no seat belt or any form of safety. Did I also mention the parents who stuff their children with lots of junk food while they treat themselves to a healthy diet? Before we all start judging and pointing fingers, I will go first to admit that I am one of these parents. I have spent a lot of money on paed visits only to find out that it’s because of the junk

consumption in my house and I am now learning slowly to say no to my children’s requests. It’s not an easy decision to make because you don’t want to see your cute little one all grumpy or throwing tantrums but as a parent I stand by the motto of “I can’t always be your best friend”. It’s no secret: kids can make it incredibly hard for adults to say “no,” whether your young child is throwing tantrums and acting up—or your teen has escalated to becoming verbally (or physically) abusive. Your child might also try to make you feel guilty in order to get his or her way, or act overly sweet and responsible, only to revert to his normal self after the “prize” has been won. Keep in mind that your job as a parent is to set the limit, not to control how your child feels about it or reacts to it. This behaviour usually starts when kids are young. Maybe your daughter acted out in the supermarket when she didn’t get something she wanted. You tried to be firm but finally let her have her way so she would stop embarrassing you. Or maybe you were at home one day and you told your son to turn off the TV. Perhaps he cried, put on his best sad face, and said, “Please mummy—just 10 more minutes?”
The 10 minutes turned into another 10 minutes and then an hour, until you found yourself feeling frustrated and angry that you didn’t stick to your limits. The bottom line is that we all know what we should do in these situations but let’s face it—it can be really hard.
Granted, most parents want their kids to be happy. Most of the time, when your kids are happy, you are happy, which is why over time, parents can get stuck in a pattern of giving in even though they want to set firm limits. But it’s never too late to start taking back your
authority so you can help your child develop the skills she/ he will be able to cope when people tell him or her “no” later in life when they are adults.

Building an efficient organiSation
A
s an entrepreneur, you may have a great idea or innovation which you believe is going to change your community, your country, or maybe even the world we live in. And you’ll probably make a lot of money along the way. That’s allowed, and there’s nothing wrong with it, provided you don’t harm others, the environment, or break the law. Go ahead, make money, be a billionaire, and you know I’ll be right there cheering you all the way! But before you can ever get there, you’ll have to build an efficient business organization, employing lots of people, because no one can do these things alone. In this new series, I’m going to talk about what I call, “The hardest thing to do in business: building an efficient organization.” You’ll face many different challenges as an
entrepreneur, but the most difficult is building an efficient organization. What do I mean by efficient? Let me start with one formal definition: “Achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense.” Most people fail dismally in this area. It’s at once the most difficult and most complex thing that any entrepreneur ever has to do. In this series, we’ll talk about many issues including registering a business, recruiting and hiring your team, and organizational structure. This is business “MBA stuff” and if you just want to run a little bottle store, it might be tough for you, but if you think you can open more than one bottle store, hang around and see. As they say in my beloved Nigeria, “It’s for the senior class.” You won’t be the next Dangote or Zuckerberg if you don’t know how to set up an efficient business organization. To lay the foundations for this series, here’s another definition: The Cambridge dictionary
describes “organization” as “a group whose members work together for a shared purpose in a continuing way.” __The verb “organize” is also important here! It means, “to make the necessary plans for something to happen; arrange.” Do I really need to write much more…? If only it were as simple and straightforward as it sounds! Building an organization has many different aspects. Can you tell me the importance of nearly each and every word in these three definitions? Organizations can be almost any size, but the ones I’ll be talking about here are ones that involve a hierarchy of authority and delegation: executive leadership, mid-level management, technical experts, frontline supervisors and employees in different departments, most with different operational functions. This means a complex array of people with different talents and skills, like those I’m proud
AT THE EXPO The African Birding Expo will take place from ovember 18 to 21 at Entebbe Botanical Gardens and will be attended by a spectrum of the bird watching community within and outside Africa. There will be stands selling products related to bird watching and nature conservation. These will include scopes, binoculars, guide books, tours, foods, clothes, and any other related equipment. There will be tour operators, hoteliers, conservation organisations, travel agents and airlines. The event happens once in Africa every year.
and blessed to have on our companies’ teams globally. Maybe different roles and gifts, but the key non-negotiable ingredients? Integrity, shared vision, mutual respect, accountability. I won’t dwell on problems so much as solutions in this series, but to get started, here’s a list from a McKinsey report on some of the biggest challenges faced by companies (young and old) trying to build organizational capability: nOrganizational resistance to change. nLack of resources. nLack of credible metrics. n(Lack of) identification of who is accountable for execution. nInability to gain attention and buy-in from line managers. n Lack of senior management support. n(Lack of) clear vision or objectives. n Ineffective training approaches. nInconsistent application of methods, processes. Now you see why I’ve said building an efficient organization is the hardest thing to do in business. But with great people on your team, all is possible! We’ll get started on this and more next week. To be continued. . .

Admiring her pair of earrings got Angel Kemy into jewelry business BY WILLIAM KASOBA
A
ngel Kemy did not wait to finish university to get employed like most university students would do. Just after joining Kampala International University in 2013 to pursue her three-year Bachelor’s degree in Procurement and Supplies Management, Kemy sought alternatives to top up whatever her parents provided. Being one in love with jewelry, she went to downtown Kampala one afternoon to get herself a new set of ornaments as she had many times before. This one time however, on getting back home, she took some time to examine what she had bought and what caught her eye was the pair of earrings that appeared to be locally made. “I looked at this pair of earrings and I thought; I can also make one of that kind,” Kemy said. “So I went back to where I
had bought them and I inquired about how such things are made.” They were kind enough to explain to her every step and in no time she was ready to put theory attained into practice. Kemy started by buying all the basic equipment like the ring bending plier that cost her Shs10,000, jaw flat nose (placing device) at Shs7,000, threads, cutter, scissor, beads and a gum gun. She got all the capital from her university pocket money and admitted to sometimes lying to her parents just so she could squeeze some more money out of them for her budding business. “One day I deceived my father that I needed some money to buy different sorts of handouts,” she narrated with an embarrassed smile. Initially, Kemy planned to make the jewelry for personal use. But when some friends saw how attractive her jewelry was,
they asked where she had bought them from. “They were surprised to hear that I made them myself,” she said. “My friends slowly started giving me orders and I used to charge them fairly; as you know campus students like cheap things,” she said. As time went on her friends introduced her to other customers and one of her friends advised her to commercialise the jewelry business. This was advice Kemy took in a heartbeat and in no time she had started her home based business which she called Kemy Jewelries. She also opened a Facebook page by the same name to grow her customer base. Three years on Kemy still mostly does the work alone but on some occasions where she has many orders, she employs friends. She has expanded her
product range to include items like bracelets, necklaces, from just the earrings she made at the start. Interestingly she also makes customised jewelry with names or themes. It has not all been smooth sailing however. Kemy pointed out
Hard work speaks for ITSELF Bernard Mukasa is the Senior Associate at ENSafrica When did you join the employed ranks? I was employed in 2011 straight out of Law Development Centre after doing the Bar course.
What was your position and how much were you earning? I was a legal assistant at Synergy Solicitors & Advocates- a law firm, earning Shs500,000.
How did you rise through the ranks? After my first year when my Bar course results came out and I had passed I became a Junior Associate in 2012. In 2014 I became an Associate and in late 2015, after a secondment at a leading firm in London and working on a number of big transactions, I made the jump to Senior Associate at ENSafrica. I would say hard work eventually speaks for itself. Hopefully in a few years I will be a Partner.
What have been the greatest challenges so far? Well, one is constantly learning because as a lawyer you always learn a new trick daily. So biggest challenges include learning daily, failing and learning from my mistakes, adapting to different circumstances, like when I was in London and had to adapt to British culture and legal system. Lastly lawyers are paid peanuts at the early stages of the career and yet you have to buy fancy suits and ties so it is really financially challenging at that stage.
Who do you look up to in the career world? In Uganda, Macdusman Kabega and Khiddu Makubuya and globally, Tim Taylor (London) and Gabriel Mpumbani who is a Uganda-born Partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
What’s that one thing you would like to change about your professional? The image that lawyers are liarsbrought about by a few unscrupulous lawyers who do shady stuff.
Tell us some more about yourself. I am 31 years, not yet married and no children but hopefully soon. I went to Kampala Parents, SMACK and MACOS and then Makerere University for Law. I am the last born and only boy in a family of five. I am passionate about Arsenal and Uganda Cranes, and also into Rotary.

The upcoming entrepreneur finished her degree last year and has since got herself a job as a risk advisor with an insurance firm but she has no plans of slowing down with as far as her business is concerned. Turning the
odd corner
T
here are those awkward corners in the house that just keep staring at you stubbornly because of the off dimension they spread to the whole room and with no obvious solution. When it comes to decorating your house, every inch of the space matters if your room must be perfect. Do not look too far; all you need is a little creativity to turn an oddly shaped corner into an eye-catching spot. Take a look at these amazing ideas. Build a command station You could turn a weird corner into a central spot that fulfils the needs of the entire household. Just set up a table or closet where basically anything and everything that comes in handy is kept-such as outdoor mat, scissors, keys, fresheners, tools etc. This will also help you avoid clutter around the house. Round table A round table will not only make good use by fitting nicely into a compact corner space but can also sit more bodies than a rectangular one. You will have your family sat
close together for a Sunday game of cards.
Chair it up Somebody got smart and built a piece of furniture that nestles perfectly into a corner and takes up the least amount of space possible. Try out a rocking chair in this space, for example. Get a plant If you are not interested in dramatic furniture for your weird corner, then a plant may be the perfect alternative for you. Whether small or large, a plant will bring dimension, texture and the much needed dose of greenery. Set it up with a TV One of the perfect solutions to a glaring corner is setting it up with a TV. A TV in a corner will not only fill up the space but will also look like it was born for it. Irene M. Namarah
landscaping AND GARDENING You can add a graceful and elegant accent to your home with an appealing artificial tree. You can get one that is 4-foot-tall to be utilised indoors or outdoors for ultimate versatility. Get one with quality construction with sturdy plastic and polyester that will ensure that this tree can be a lasting home decor item for you and your guests to enjoy ...until you get tired of it. Get one with silk leaves and winding trunk that is wonderfully picturesque and charming, making it an ideal piece for any space inside or outside your home that needs a facelift. It can be good for making those dull corner areas look busier or just add the green that oozes life in your sitting room, especially if you are renting an aprtment with no garden.

Only 26 men have held that solitary ranking since the calculations went computerised 43 years ago, it is not a gimmick, or a marketing exercise, or even a reward in itself, but a defining benchmark. You cannot fluke it or get lucky with a judging panel. It is deserved. It is definitive. It hasn’t made every player happy. The only certain thing about being world number one is that the day will come when you will no longer be world number one. Climbing the mountain is often an easier task in sport than defending your splendid isolation. Being world number one gets you respect. It also makes you a target. Everyone wants your scalp. Every defeat is automatically a headline. Even your own motivation can begin to slide, if only subconsciously, if only by minute fractions. How to focus on the next target when you can climb no further? Where can you go from the top but down? Murray’s character may insulate him from those uncertainties for a while yet. November 2016 Replaces Novak Djokovic as world number one
shackled Djokovic, but it is also testament to a desire for self-improvement only occa- sionally found in sportsmen of his age. Ranked 17th in the world a decade ago, he was gloriously log-jammed at four in those four seasons from 2008 to 2011, the unprecedented trio of Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal seeming to block any further ascent. He dropped to sixth in 2014 after his back surgery and then appeared stymied at second for the past year as 12-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic went through the peak of his reign. The belief and the hard work never dropped off. Different coaches, tweaked training, a renewed focus on the basics that, in this year alone, has seen his second serve refashioned and accelerated. It is testament to self-belief too - that in an era decorated by three of the greatest players of all time, he could be crowned the best; that seven years and two months after first reaching number two, he
could still take that final special step. Plenty of fine Grand Slam-winning players have never been world number one, Michael Chang, Goran Ivanisevic and Michael Stich among them. Rankings in sport do not always reflect the accepted wisdom but for Murray, this may yet be the start of something even more beautiful, rather than the pinnacle. After five defeats in the Australian Open final, never will Murray have a better chance of winning it than this January with Federer and Nadal faded, Djokovic - his nemesis in four of those finals - jaded. It is dreamy, fanciful stuff. But that has been Murray’s motif: ripping up precedent, making the impossible real.

CRANES DARE TO DREAM Sat, November 12 Time: 4:30pm Live on SS3
BY WILLIAM KASOBA
U
ganda Cranes goes up against fellow Group E underdogs Congo Brazzaville on Saturday at Namboole Stadium daring to dream as a win will see our boys go top of the section in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers — even if only temporarily as current table leaders Egypt could reclaim top spot if they overcome Ghana. This will be the Cranes second group game and the first at home. Uganda held group favourites Ghana to a 0-0 draw in Tamale in the first weekend of African World Cup while Saturday’s opponents Congo lost their opening fixture 2-1 at home to Egypt.

A win would mean Uganda will end this round of qualifying ahead of Egypt or Ghana, both of which are favoured to finish higher than the Cranes in the group, and end the year on a high as they return to the scene of their greatest achievement in recent years following September’s qualification for the African Nations Cup for the first time in nearly 40 years. And, it would not be entirely surprising if Cranes overcame Congo—even disregarding Uganda’s exceptional home record over the years (one competitive loss in 12 years), Congo is an opponent the Cranes have had a decent return against. The teams have faced each other six times in the past, with each team winning three games, and interestingly each team winning the games it has hosted. The most recent meeting between the two was an Afcon qualifier that the Cranes
won 4-0 at Namboolea, in June 2012. The Cranes will have their confidence boosted by reports that Congo’s star man, Bastia striker Thievy Bifouma, will miss this fixture after suffering a hamstring injury. Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic will, however, also be sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Denis Onyango who, fresh from winning the Caf Champions League and last Sunday’s USPA sports personality for October, might be forced to sit out this game. The shot-stopper was one of the big name absentees as a relatively strong Ugandan side went down 0-1 to Zambia’s Chipolopolo in a friendly on Tuesday. Probable line-up: Denis Onyango, Nicholas Wadada, Joseph Ochaya, Murshid Juuko, Isaac Isinde, Khalid Aucho, Tonny Mawejje, Moses Oloya, Kizito Luwagga, Farouk Miya, Geofrey Massa

BY WILLIAM KASOBA We are barely at the halfway stage of the Pepsi National Fuba League semi-final playoffs and yet it already appears ominous for the teams aiming to stop City Oilers from winning a fourth straight championship. The champions last week dispatched UCU Canons 70-54 in Game One to assume the driving seat against an opponent they have proved too good for every time they have met in the recent past. That is not to suggest that UCU have gone down without a fight on any of those occasions—far from it. But the reality is that despite their best efforts to make their play-offs against the Oilers something of a contest, they have
ultimately fallen short—and this year promises no different. The burden thus immediately shifts to the other side of the draw to find an opponent worthy of stopping the current champions, if, rather when, they match into the final. One of Power and KIU Titans lie in wait, but on the evidence of Game One of their play-off, City Oilers will be sleeping easy. Power overcame KIU 70-69 in their Monday game and should fancy their chances of ending KIU’s interest in this year’s championship. What should be of concern to the Joseph Ikong-led outfit though is whether they can stop Mandy Juruni’s side. In the ladies’ category, JKL Lady Dolphins surprised basketball fans by defeating last year’s runners up KCCA Leopards 58-45, but upstaging the two seasoned campaigners that are Leopards and UCU Lady Canons still appears to be a bridge too far.
