Road safety I Traffic

News Feature

Is your car ROADWORTHY? I

A survey commissioned by Matooke Republic revealed that seven in every  cars are not worthy to be on our roads going by the guidelines of the mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspection exercise that starts on Monday. Edward Ssekalo writes about the exercise and what you need to have your car in order.

f you are reading this it’s likely that you are among the 70 per cent of car owners in this country whose cars will not pass the test when the government starts on its compulsory vehicle inspection from next week. The Transport ministry confirmed earlier this week the vehicle inspection exercise it has promised for a long time will finally kick off on Monday November 28. That exercise will cost you Shs93,400—the inspection fee saloon car owners will pay annually, but that is the easy part. The trickier part is that passing the test will certainly prove an almost impossible task for most Ugandan car owners, going by the very strict nature of the tests—and the general DMC state of cars on our roads. Although we could not confirm with the authorities how many of the estimated one million cars on the Ugandan roads can be qualified as being in dangerous mechanical condition, our quick survey revealed seven out of 10 cars whizzing past would fail the upcoming road worthiness tests. That is because the inspection which Ministry of Works and Transport announced will start at Kawanda Motor Vehicle Inspection Station will not clear a car if it has a broken indicator, for example, or a faulty seat belt, or chirped paint. That is before we get started on the questionable brakes, your dead shock absorbers—thanks to the kind of roads you endure—or the excuses of rubber strip your car might have for tyres. The inspection exercise will be carried out by SGS Automotive Uganda Ltd, the firm that won the tender to do the inspection on behalf of government. And the firm’s publicist Charles Olweny told us in an interview that SGS will test for everything and anything about every car that is presented to any of their testing centres that will be opened Many cars in Uganda are around the country. not roadworthy. Apart from the Shs93,400 fee for salon cars, a boda boda will pay Shs46,000, omnibuses (taxis) will pay Shs103,400, mediumsized buses (for example coasters) will pay Shs50,000. Trucks of different sizes will pay Shs93,400 for the lightest, Shs125,000 for medium sized ones and Shs50,000 for heavy duty trucks. The surprise is that trailers will pay some of the lowest amounts- Shs16,700. The vehicle inspection will be carried at four stations in Kawanda, Nabbingo, Namulanda and Namanve to cater for the bulk of the vehicles which are located in and around Kampala, while additional stations will be set up in Mbarara, Mbale and Gulu to cater for vehicle owners based in the western, eastern and northern parts of Uganda. According to SGS, there will also be mobile inspection units used to cover as many cars as possible. The government re-introduced compulsory vehicle inspection as one of the measures to make Ugandan roads safer as accidents became more rampant- with Masaka road as the most notorious highway in the country following a succession of fatal accidents in mid-2016.

Talking Music

Trends I Review

Has Uganda found its music identity in Baxragga? After years of copying Jamaicans and Nigerians, urban Ugandan music has its own identity in Baxragga, a fusion of Afrobeat, ragga and Kadongo Kamu, but kadongo Kamu artistes are losing sleep over the hybrid genre.

T

here is no doubt that Baxragga is a huge thing right now in the Ugandan music industry. For starters, Baxragga is a unique blend of the infectious rhythmic Kiganda Bakisimba drum sounds, laced with Afro Beat, and the catchy rhymes of ragga. If you have been shaking your waist to Bebe Cool’s Kabulengane or Navio’s Njogereza, then you know the drill! Baxragga has a strong multi-cultural blend that is taking the airwaves by storm. For long, Kadongo Kamu has been the sole genre of music that uplifted traditional sounds in the mainstream. With the emergence of Baxragga, these Kadongo Kamu artistes are not taking it lightly. They are losing sleep over Baxragga. Abayaye Bakiriza is a “diss” track by popular Kadongo Kamu artiste Willy Mukabya. The title loosely translates to “The rascals have allowed.” The vibrant sounds of the engalabi (single skin cylindrical drum) open the song before ushering in rich melodic and resonant tunes of a xylophone that sets the pace for a few seconds. A

BY MOSES ABEKA tube fiddle and flute waft lazily in the background. The overall acoustic effect is mid-groove tempo and distinct traditional sound. The smorgasbord of traditional sounds laid the perfect music bed for Mukabya to mock popular urban artistes that he says have turned to Kadongo Kamu, though they classify it as Baxragga. He performs in his first verse calling upon his fellow Kadongo Kamu artistes to wake up and take note of the “enemies” in their yard. He vehemently dismisses Baxragga as a separate fusion and claims it is Kadongo Kamu. The beauty of his catchy narration style is backed up by the drums. There is a wealth of sounds of the drums that makes the song infectious! The embuutu drum provided the bass while the namunjoloba, a solo drum blended in a bit of alto while the single skin cylindrical (engalabi) drum was the most pronounced. With this kind of sound, Nigerian artistes may feel the heat! In the second verse, Mukabya brought up the typical authoritative lyrics that are unique to Kadongo Kamu. He toned down his rather hard critical lines and lyrically

rolled a red carpet to welcome the “ragga guys” to Kadongo Kamu. But his welcome is not plain. From dress code, code of conduct, and suggesting they get rid of dreadlocks, he highlighted the norms of Kadongo Kamu that the “new guys” should emulate. He continued to advise more artistes to join them and uplift the Kadongo Kamu genre. He did not mince his words. The song ends on a comical note. He thanked the big names from Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool, Navio, Aziz Azion, Dax Kartel and Bobi Wine for making Kadongo kamu music all along! Many are now on the Baxragga bandwagon. Self proclaimed “King of Baxragga” Aziz Azion has taken the lead in the new genre. His songs like I’m bad and Mulembe featuring Sheeba enjoy popular airplay. Winnie Nwagi, Navio, and others are releasing songs in that trend. In Mukabya’s song, Mukabya claims all urban pop artistes will eventually become Kadongo Kamu singers. The rascals have indeed swallowed their ego to bring us a distinctly Ugandan sound. Kadongo Kamu has been rather unpopular especially among the youth for its rather dull single guitar string melody and overly-serious lyrics. It has that un-cool imprint to it that most guys don’t want to be associated to. Baxragga on the other hand is a clever blend of traditional music with new trending styles of music and offers a cross-generational audience. It lends in the cool effect with a nostalgic touch of our heritage. Satirically, Mukabya’s Abayaye Bakiriza comes off a Baxragga song rather than Kadongo Kamu! Puritan Mukabya’s hand just got trapped in the wheels of change! At least we finally have a distinctly Ugandan sound.

LETTER TO MY MANGO PEOPLE

  

When K’la women took me to pool school T

hree nights in Bweyogerere where the jalopy I was travelling in broke down and I met a set of three fabulousladies. The first set, my sisterly Primah and Dorene and Morene (forget the onomatopoeic musicality), two ladies I had only known what they look like on social media. Oh, I also bumped into Harriet and Elizabeth at Lumumba Avenue. But none of these ladies are into billiards or the pool table game. And then I sauntered into some club called Tex Lounge or something like that to sample the night life and make some comparisons with Kigali. Well, there is nothing to compare between the two. Kampala is renowned for its nocturnal lifestyle. But there was something else here… Claude had warned that I would be bored due to lack of optical nutrition (read luscious and drop dead chics). But my interest wasn’t in girls, I was there to kill time with a game of pool. But first, Claude wasn’t wrong. I swear I have never been so bored by the sight of ‘weak’ birds as it was last Saturday between Bweyogerere and Kireka as I sampled different places. But if the girls had nothing worth a second look about them, there were these three ‘heavy duty’ specimens I found inside Tex Lounge who were so good at the game we call pool that I looked like a beginner. I believe those ones were weaned on pool cue and balls with their mothers sat at the billiard table. In Kigali, there was one chic that used to flog me in that game. I say ‘used to’ because I have to emphasise the past tense. She no longer has a chance against me. Most of the clubs I check in once in a blue moon hardly have ladies treating men to their pocket’s worth of humiliation at the pool table, but these three in Kampala were in their own league. One game ended in a near short game. I had barely potted one when the black was done for. The second attempt went to the wire but the loser was none other than the tourist in me. Off I sauntered to Kireka, my former abode and hangout place. The home of the best rolex. Pool Nest Bar, the place where I believed had a jinx against Liverpool because every game I watched the Kop play from there was always a draw or loss of Djimi Traore messing about. Here, there were no ladies bashing men at the table. The bar was teeming with revellers, so many of them it was amazing seeing guys cue without disruptions. By the time I figured it was time to retire for the night, three things struck me up about Kampala. Firstly, that Kampala chics probably play pool better than they can tip salt in stew. Maybe I was witnessing professional players or whatever, but from Bweyogerere to Kireka and seeing that many chics ‘man’ the pool table was such a sight. Will Kigali get there? Secondly, Ugandan boys can dance. Every other club had youthful guys who would be so lost in dance that I would get lost in just staring and admiring them. If I had even half such talent, my constipation would be at zero level and then my potbelly would probably be no more. While the lot of us treat a dance as the vertical expression of horizontal desires, these youths in Kampala have it easy. They get so enmeshed into dance you can’t imagine such beings could be stressed by the Leo’s continued abject occupation of Uganda. Thirdly, the jalopy messed my travel but the nightlife was spiriting enough. What Kampala, or let me say Bweyogerere and Kireka need is some beautiful chics for now… .-jeyseaman@gmail.com

However, Sam is said to have enjoyed tens of thousands of chicken from Mbuga in form of a state of the art Jeep. Sam has been riding in the SK personalized plate Jeep for several months now! Meanwhile, besides plans to have the wedding at both the Kibuli and Old Kampala mosques, we have learnt that the Mbugas have invited over 1,000 guests for their big day. According to our sources, the Mbugas told close friends and relatives at their final meeting, that all is set for a thousand; “We want you to come thirsty and on empty stomachs; we promise to feed you with all the food and drinks of your choice, in any quantity,” Mbuga was quoted to have told the meeting. A source told us that the Mbugas wish to make a vehicle and

bike procession that will snake through the city center to Old Kampala and later to Serena Hotel on Saturday. All the best the Mbugas!

Ambiance discotheque starts manufacturing own waragi

here’s a new drink in town; the Ambiance Waragi! Haven’t seen or even heard about it? Well, we have learnt that the new beverage is still strictly exclusive to Ambiance discotheque goers. We have learnt that Ambiance waragi is for now only served at the different Ambiance discotheque branches in Mityana, Masaka and Kampala. During an impromptu visit to Ambiance over the weekend, we were shocked at the latest innovation by the club owner Mr Kiyimba. We had a chance to test the Ambiance

A source within the Ambiance management told us the drink will remain exclusive to their discotheque branches until its official launch due sometime next year. The source told us that ‘their boss’ is still working on packaging bigger quantities before the drink is officially launched on the market.

enims are a classic. And who knows what the world of fashion would be without these beautiful things? Embellished denims are all the rage, and should be on your must have list.

Mr. Africa

How would you describe your style? My fashion style is spontaneous given the fact that I do different professions , its mostly formal and casual. What is the one fashion item you cannot live without? Cologne. What is your worst buy ever? That would be some Hugo Boss cologne that I bought at Shs,. It turned out to be a fake.

You can rock this trend on bottoms, jackets or dungarees. You can have the embellishments coloured or in a neutral shade like silver or gold.

What styling trick works for you all the time? Matching blazers with different trousers and bow ties. Any item we would not find in your wardobe? Suspenders. These are my weakness.

In order to pull off this look, keep the rest of the items in your look toned down, so your denim can stand out. The trend is unisex, so you can rock the look with your boo, for complete couple goals.

KIU PARTNERS WITH VODAFONE FOR GRAGUATION PROGRAMME

OUR CRUSH

K

ampala International University has partnered with Vodafone to allow new graduates to develop their professional and behavioural skills and gain work experience whilst making a useful contribution to the telecom company. Dubbed the Graduate Development Programme, it is a six months’ rotational programme, involving intensive experiential learning assignments and a seventh month for the Business Improvement Project which the graduate will be required to present at the end of the development programme. In a competitive and tough Ugandan job market, KIU’s students will gain exposure to real-world problems and issues. In effect, this will increase their marketability to employers when they graduate. Secondly, it would ease the transition from being a student to entering the workforce. Also, they will develop an expanded network of associates and professionals who they can benefit from in the future.

risca Amongin, the recently elected guild president of the Uganda Christian University last weekend caused unrest among the students after releasing the names of ministers that will aid her during her term of office. This came after the students alleged that all the names on the guild elect’s appointed list were either people who supported her campaign or former presidential candidates which led students to question their moral competence. The students even went further to allege that one of the former presidential candidates Perez Mwembi was disqualified from the presidential race after being accused of corruption and bribery. Former presidential candidate Allan

Yiga was vetted for a ministerial position as well. Prisca also appointed Brian Mwesigwa as her vice president. He is rumoured to be the money-bags behind her entire campaign.

Museveni has  days to open Makerere … Besigye M ain opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has given President Museveni an ultimatum of 10 days to reopen Makerere University or else he mobilises a nationwide protest. On Tuesday while speaking to the media at his home in Kasangati, Besigye expressed his discontent towards the continued indefinite closure of Makerere University, “Parents, students and Ugandans cannot continue to be subjected to unnecessary suffering because of this illegitimate regime of Museveni. Our students can’t wait as the committee consumes our money.”

“If Makerere is not open in 10 days, we’re going to call for a national protest,” he said. “We call upon all Ugandans to engage the issue as a matter of national importance,” he added. Besigye went ahead to rubbish Museveni’s recent decision to setup a visitors’ committee of inquiry into Makerere issues saying that it’s a waste of time since there’s already one that was set-up two years ago. “The setup is uncalled for because the 204-page-report that was prepared two years ago by Prof (Francis) Omaswa has never been used,” he told the media.

o you have one of those obnoxious Facebook friends that you keep meaning to unfriend because their every third status is gushing about how bae is the best this or the most amazing that? Do not feel guilty and it’s not being jealous like people might think. What you’re feeling should be genuine concern for your friend’s relationship because they are in fact, uncertain about it all. If you are one of the people who likes to take your love affair to social media, post photos of you cuddling with your significant other all over the place with captions “Chilling with bae,” here’s what most of your friends will read, “insecurity,” although they’ll comment “Wow, you guys look happy together.” If there is this friend that can’t stop posting it is possible that is because they are desperately in need of public acceptance because they have this big void in their life away from Facebook or that Whatsapp group. When they post sweet couple selfies with darling captions they are telling the world that “Hey guys, I’m in a relationship can you believe it, well neither can I and am scared that I might wake up and it’s all just a dream”. Even if the whole point of displaying a love affair on social media were to prove a point to

someone; maybe an ex or a competitor, then that still isn’t a healthy relationship, as it still reeks of a form of insecurity from miles away. Then there’s this thing of falling in love with someone because of everyone else’s perspective of that person or of your couple. Your relationship is relying on public validation and once the traffic on your love posts starts to go down, your relationship is going down with it. No one wants to feel rejected by the public if they have been depending on it for assurance. The breakups are the worst; you will have to get a replacement lover ASAP to keep up appearances and show that you’ve moved on. Here’s the thing: when lovers have something truly special and intimate, they naturally want it to be just the two of them. So having a private moment and telling the whole world about it clearly leaves a few unanswered questions… How do you even start telling people to leave you and your sweetheart alone when your all over everyone’s news feeds? Yes people love seeing other people happy but do not even try to think that they are being haters when they start being rude. It’s one thing to be in love but it’s another thing asking the whole world to part of your love affair.

Keep your hair from splitting

A

frica has its beauty but most of us seem to go through a constant tug of war with our hair especially because of the hair texture. If you have poor quality (PQ), you will do everything to the hair except to cut it but it will still grow at its own painfully gradual pace. This, coupled with splitting, and you will always feel like you are fighting a losing battle. There are no magical ways to stop this from happening, however, there are a few routine tricks that will help slow that down;

· Change the way you shampoo your hair.

When applying shampoo and conditioner, concentrate the products on the ends to strengthen the hair shaft.

·

Opt for strengthening shampoos and conditioners; the shampoo strengthens strands while the conditioner binds split ends to-

gether to lessen the appearance of breakage.

·

Forget hot water when washing your hair as it weakens it further. Rinse instead with cool water to seal the hair’s outer layer to strengthen.

·

Avoid brushing your hair when wet. If you must, use a wide tooth brush as lightly as possible and always brush from bottom to top.

·

Brush your hair gently and on a daily basis to distribute the natural oils evenly threw out the hair.

·

Endeavor as much as possible to avoid styling as it’s one of the top most causes of hair splitting especially when it comes to heat from curling irons, straighteners and dries.

Parenting

  PARENT TO PARENT

AWKWARD QUESTIONS I

“As parents, we sometimes need to reflect on our own education background to be able to guide our own children.”

have never had to deal with awkward questions from children like I did in . I was pregnant with our fourth child and the siblings monitored the bulge of my stomach like they were watching the growth of a bean seedling in a tin at the teacher’s window in class. My daughter once after touching and feeling the baby kicks asked, “How did this baby get in your stomach?” That hit my ears like thunder. I held her face in my palms and said, “Please call your brother, I need to send you guys to the shop for bread.” I watched her walk away and not to ignore her question, when they returned from the shop I asked the brother. “Do you know how babies get into their mother’s stomachs?” “Yes! That’s what we sturdy in science.” My daughter knowing that her class isn’t doing the science subject yet calmly said,” I will wait for my time to study that in science”. I narrowly escaped the embarrassment! How and when do you tell your children the truth about sexuality? When they are with you in public places like the swimming pool, beach or mall where lovers get intimate and cosy kissing, holding hands and romancing away, how do you manage the reaction from your children? I’ve learnt to ask questions when they show concern. Like if they ask why people are doing bad manners, I calmly ask them what they think. Of course sometimes depending on which age group asked, I forge an answer to fit in their imagination and level of understanding. I will sugarcoat and lie about certain things to protect a tender mind of a - year old but I will be blunt and sincere with my -year old. I will not tell the truth to littler ones because I don’t want to confuse them but I won’t hide the truth from the older ones because as a parent I know that we are the main source of knowledge for our children and they believe in our word and guidance.

Children are exposed to so much mature content and information on TV, the internet, magazines, newspapers and radio. We must be ready to address queries that rise from their confused brains. However, we must try as much as possible to prevent them from being exposed to such stuff. Parents should know that some children mature faster than others and therefore we have to monitor what kind of company our children

keep. Children’s cartoons are mature these days. We should be aware that our children get to see these embarrassing things earlier than we did. When answering awkward questions from children, first recollect yourself and put into consideration the age of the child you are talking to. Use simple terms, you will be compelled to play around with the truth and with some children, you will need to be as very truthful as you can.

 

You need to evaluate your child "W

e think your child should be evaluated.” Hearing these words from a paediatrician, teacher or school counsellor can be upsetting. Same as asking your child to repeat a particular class because the performance was not up to the school’s standard. Having your child tested for learning and attention issues is an important step towards helping them manage their challenges. It’s common for parents these days to brand their children as lazy, weak, short tempered and all sorts of identities that are in most cases not who or what they actually are. This is why there’s need for evaluation to find out what your children’s weaknesses or strengths are. While my son’s interest are mainly into outdoor farming activities like poultry and farming

projects and mathematics being he’s best subject, my daughter on the other hand is a bright student in class but has zero interest in practical projects. As a parent and mother who juggles so many things outside my parenting life, I evaluate my children on a daily. I can proudly say I know when my child is telling a lie, I know that my eldest son’s talent is football, my second born daughter is a talented singer and dancer while our little Jasmine is still discovering herself and very soon we will settle on a talent of her choice. Testing will tell you what your child can and can’t do well. For example, a child may score in the th percentile for math problem solving. But score in the th percentile for basic English like spell check and pronunciation. This will give you a clearer idea of where they need support, and where they can work more independently. Testing will give your child a better

understanding of themselves and selfconfidence. Parents often worry that sharing results with their child will hurt ones self-esteem. But a school counsellor or evaluator can explain the results in terms your child can grasp. And your child may be relieved to understand why they struggle. He/She may finally be able to explain to peers that she isn’t “stupid” but has difficulty doing certain things, like reading words on a page. Testing can also mean your child gets additional support. A team at school can review your child’s test results and decide whether he’s entitled to special education services and supports at school. This is why such children are given special attention because the problem has been noticed hence need for a solution. As a parent, you can use data from an evaluation to advocate for your child. For example, you may want them to have more

support in language arts. Testing will help you make better choices for your child. That can include types of classes, teachers, schools and instructional approaches. Testing may also help you make more informed choices about afterschool activities and holiday activities. And it can give you a greater understanding of who your child is and how to help her make the most of her potential. It’s not a must in Ugandan schools for children to be evaluated, but from a personal experience, it can be empowering for both you and your child. Learn about the evaluation process and about what the results can entitle your child to. As the term winds up, I wish all the children the very best in your end of term exams... - Musimentas@gmail.com

ntebbe is the next frontier of growth in the Ugandan retail property market, the respected real estate management firm Knight Frank has forecast. At a press event on Monday this week where the property management firm announced the opening of Entebbe’s newest shopping center—Imperial Mall, Knight Frank’s Head of Retail Marc du Toit asserted the lakeside town, the gateway to Uganda by air, was on the verge of a major transformation thanks to the construction of the Entebbe Expressway (Southern Bypass) as well as the ongoing expansion works at the Entebbe airport. The $30 million Imperial Mall is the second development of its kind to open in Entebbe in a space of less than three years after Victoria Mall, which Mr du Toit

suggested points to growing demand for formalised retail trade in the tourist town with a population estimated at 80,000. “Everybody is looking at Entebbe as the node of the future,” he said, adding that opening the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway in 2017 is going to change the dynamic for a town whose airport expansion works are expected to increase passenger traffic by 7.5% annually for the next five years. The Imperial Mall, according to the property’s managers Knight Frank is set in a Tuscan-inspired architectural design and offers a vibrant mix of shopping, food, service, fashion and entertainment. The asking prices for space at the mall range from $10 to $45 per square metre.

A date with the mountain gorilla BY PETER HOGEL Having left the tarmac road from Kampala, the scenery as well as the comfort is changing—for the better—as we get closer to Bwindi in search of our long-lost relatives: the mountain gorilla. At this point the true nature of the name “Bwindi Impenetrable Forest” starts to reveal itself. Mountain peaks, steep slopes, deep valleys, and at first you might think “How are we going to find anything in there?”…But we will! On reaching our destination, Buhoma, the mist is like a veil around the tree tops. You can hear the sounds of the rain forest; birds chirping, monkeys chattering… As we tuck in for the night we can hardly wait for daybreak. After breakfast, and our lunch packed, we head to headquarters for briefing; the dos and don’ts— don’t get too close, don’t stare a gorilla

in the eye, and seriously, you don’t want to pick a fight with 200kg of muscle, 10 times as strong as a man. But gorillas are friendly, and you don’t have anything to fear. Finding the gorillas is easy; trackers start up in the morning so they know where to go when we get there. You could be lucky—sometimes the gorillas come down the mountain so you will have an easy walk for half an hour, or you could find yourself following them in their search for food for four hours… But it is all worth it finding the gorillas in the thick of the rain forest, approaching them, finding yourself surrounded by a whole family and being among them while their babies play around you, possibly pulling your shirt. If that isn’t awesome, what is? To get started on your gorilla tracking adventure, call 0393 217048

fter completing his A’Levels in 2012 at Pallisa Secondary School in Pallisa district, Nicholas Machande’s education journey jolted to a halt as his parents could not afford to pay for university. Still only a teenager, Nicholas had to look for any available employment opportunity straight away. Nicholas’ passion since childhood had been music, so music felt like the automatic route to success. Besides he sang in the village church choir. His efforts to find sponsorship to promote his music career, however, all proved futile. Then, towards the end of 2012, Nicholas landed what was a mouthwatering opportunityearning Shs600,000 a month as a waiter at a Masaka Hotel. He did not last here however, as he was forced to quit because of his “illmannered” workmates, having only managed to work in Masaka

for six months. But having made lots of friends during his time in Masaka, one of the hotel clients offered him a deal to be part of his mobile

disco in Kampala. Nicholas the music lover saw this as his breakthrough into the

music industry only to discover he had celebrated too quickly as the mobile disco equipment was stolen in an ambush by highway robbers. “No matter the situation life has to move on,” Nicholas told himself at the time, and having saved some money over the years, remained optimistic for another break. He turned to one of his Kampala friends who owned a small salon which seemed to be getting him some good income. “I approached him for advice and he just encouraged me to venture in the same business,” Nicholas recalled. In 2015 Nicholas opened a men’s salon in Kireka town. “I spent only Shs1m to set it up.” he said, explaining that to get started he only had to buy a shaving machine which cost him Shs150,000, a sterilizer at Shs250,000, a down payment on rent for three months

while using the balance to buy things like mirrors, lights towels, hair shampoo, chairs and a fan. After operating for one month he also acquired an annual business licence from the town council at Shs72,000. “Given the fact that I was new in the salon business, for the first months I didn’t get any profit,” he recalled. He would sometimes get five clients the entire week yet he had to eat and also pay transport and a salary to his helper. Still, these hardships did not even for a single minute make him contemplate quitting business. After a few months the business picked up and he started to make between Shs40,000 to Shs50,000 per day. That is not to suggest the challenges disappeared overnight. Electricity outages were a problem before he acquired a generator, and he had to deal with “difficult” clients at times. But with a business he values at Shs4m today, all that is secondary.

What to do with A WINDOWLESS BATHROOM W HOME TIP

ithout natural light, a windowless bathroom can be a real nightmare. It is a dark and dreary cave and everything about it says, “Do whatever you are supposed to do and get out of there ASAP.” However, design-wise, you can pull off some special touches and soon be able to spend a lot of quality time in your windowless bathroom. Here are some ideas: Layer your lighting Because windows bring in horizontal light, your will need to layer your lighting horizontally too in order to emulate the feel of a window. Layering the lighting right over the glass is a great solu-

tion in a small windowless bathroom.

Love your glitter In a windowless bathroom, you don’t want anything that can take the light away. Glass, polished metal, mirrors are great materials for adding interest without absorbing light. Even if there’s very little colour, the place will still feel more spacious, bright and less cluttered than it would if you used opaque pieces. Embrace white colour White is the most recommended colour when it comes to windowless bathrooms. Not only does it add an illusion of space but also reflects light so much that you eventually wonder what you

are missing from a window. Should you opt for a dull colour, make sure you introduce white in other accessories like the bathtub, sink and storage areas. Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors You might want to use one single large wall to wall mirror which also comes as an added advantage as it takes up the space that you might have needed to tile up. Alternatively you can use a number of smaller medium size mirrors. Make sure one of those mirrors is facing the door so that it reflects natural light and mimicks the feel of a window.

hen Uganda Cranes exinternationals led by Dan Walusimbi last week on Monday raided the Federation of Uganda Football Associations—Fufa House—at Mengo, a soccer-mad nation was caught unawares. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been, for the exploits of Walusimbi and co. were the case of a feud that had been simmering for more than half a decade finally reaching boiling point. When Walsuimbi, the self-proclaimed ‘legitimate’ Fufa ‘president’ and his group stormed the Fufa headquarters, reigning destruction in their wake, it was an attempt to force out—literally—the current administration led by the Fufa president Eng. Moses Magogo which Walusimbi brands illegal. While Walusimbi and his disciples dressed their grievances in a different set of clothes during their attack on Fufa House by promoting more vigorously the idea that the men who played the game in the past and “put Uganda on the football map” should be the people trusted to run it, the squabble that rises to threaten Magogo’s hold onto power

goes much farther back in time. In 2009, a Fufa led by Lawrence Mulindwa registered as a limited company. Many football followers came out to condemn the registration saying a limited company could not manage national football because the laws of the country did not allow it and in deed Denis Obua, the man Mulindwa replaced, had been ejected for similar reasons four years earlier. Walusimbi chose to challenge this state of affairs and when in 2011 the government called for the registration of all sports associations under the Ministry of Lands, Housing & Urban Development, Mulindwa’s Fufa elected to ignore this call. Walusimbi’s camp went ahead and to register Fufa, thus obtaining a certificate of incorporation as a trustee that essentially legitimised his claim to Fufa leadership. Or did it? Fast forward to 2014, and National Council of Sports directed all sports associations that had not yet registered including Fufa (now under Magogo) to register with it because the newly enacted Sports Act outlawed national federations incorporating as limited companies. Fufa did not budge, trusting that international football governing

body Fifa would offer an escape route by declaring NCS’ efforts as interferencewhich Fifa abhors. That didn’t happen however, as Fifa last year encouraged Fufa to comply with government’s call to register afresh. Without the all-important certificate of incorporation as a trustee, Magogo’s Fufa cannot achieve this, but on the other hand, Walusimbi cannot fully constitute itself as the legitimate association because as the registrar (NCS) argues, the latter does not have the structures to qualify them as a national sports association. This is a claim Magogo’s Fufa has leveled at Walusimbi’s camp. Walusimbi on the other hand argues that they can only create the structures upon assuming office and after reclaiming facilities that belong to Fufa but have been registered in names of companies such as Nkwanga Construction and Company Ltd as well as Scoreline Ltd. It is the stuff to give a casual follower a migraine, and something much worse if you are one of the two people claiming to be president of Fufa and NCS says it recognises neither of you.

I

t is said that the reward for good work is more work, and this adage could not hold more true at this time for Uganda’s

Rugby Sevens side. The prize for that breathtaking - rout of Namibia on September  at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani (Nairobi) is a date with the world’s best sevens sides, at one of the sport’s principal competitions—the Dubai edition of the Rugby Sevens World Series next week. The World Series draws the cream of the world’s rugby players, and qualification for the event in itself is an enormous achievement. But head coach Tolbert Onyango isn’t

thinking of his boys as going to Dubai to make up the numbers. Ahead of the team’s departure next Monday November , the mantra has been to show “no fear”. Uganda is making a maiden appearance at the annual rugby extravaganza, and Onyango has named a competitive -man squad to contest in the Series starting in Dubai, before the trip to Cape Town. The squad is largely unchanged from the one that won the African Rugby Sevens. Only two new players have joined the

squad; Michael Wokorach and Byron Oketayot. Eric Kasiita will captain the team while Philip Wokorach will be his assistant. The Dubai Sevens takes place December  to . After that tournament the team will fly to South Africa to participate in the Cape Town edition of the Series that will be held December -. In Dubai, we will face some of the powerhouses of the game; as Uganda is in Pool B with South Africa, United States and Scotland.

USPA elects office bearers Fufa launches “Cranes Nalo na Kaja” to raise Shsb

T

he Uganda Sports Press Association will on Saturday November  elect office bearers at Lugogo. The successful candidates will be in office for a two-year term running to . After the vetting committee made its verdict on aspiring candidates in a meeting on Monday this week, the contestants confirmed to appear on the ballot are the current USPA president Sabiiti Muwanga who faces off yet again with Leon Senyange, the same man he beat in  to clinch the association’s topmost office. The election will also wit-

ness a repeat of the  race for the General Secretary post as KFM’s Patrick Kanyomozi faces off with New Vision’s Johnson Were. The other positions available for contest are the treasurer post, which pits Michael Nsubuga and Kasule Mubarak against each other, while Francisco Bwambale and Wasswa Hussein go head to head for the organising secretary position. The National Council of Sports will oversee the exercise. - Our Reporter

U

ganda football governing body Fufa has launched a new fundraising campaign dubbed “Cranes Nalo na Kaja”. The new campaign was launched at Serena Kampala Hotel on Tuesday and through “Cranes Nalo na Kaja” Fufa intends to hold regular fundraising drives across the country in a bid to raise Shs billion. According to Fufa officials the money that will be collected through the campaign will be used by the national team to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations tourney in Gabon next year. Fans who would like to participate in the drive will have the option of donating money at the various collection centers across the country or via mobile money on . As a sign of appreciation, Fufa says it will reward  lucky fans with an all-expenses paid trip each to go and watch the Cranes in Gabon come January .
