A letter from the Publisher KATHY FOX PUBLISHER | EDITOR IN CHIEF Happy New Year! It’s that time of year again when we all set new personal goals, address our challenges, and contemplate a brighter future with hopes of normalcy. As we look towards starting the year off in a positive light, what better way than celebrating with couples who have exchanged their vows and are beginning their life together. In this special bridal issue, I wanted to focus on new beginnings for the new year. Weddings are spectacular, whether extravagant or intimate, and one of the most sacred ceremonies in life. As couples begin their journey together, some of the most quoted words at wedding ceremonies are from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV:

not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” These words are very meaningful, especially these days, and the perfect foundation for living life. With that being said, the cover feature shares five beautiful wedding venues in Maury County and Nashville. Look at the gorgeous couples who have shared their wedding celebrations with us, they are stunning! There is also a plethora of wedding information included in this issue and even if a wedding isn’t in your near future, I hope these articles provide inspiration or bring back wonderful memories. But if you are recently engaged or planning a wedding, be sure to mark January 30th on your calendar for the Bridal Expo at the Factory at Columbia.

Learn how to eat healthy, how to take care of your feet, ways to enhance your space, and check out the perfect place for a staycation or party — the spectacular Soirée on the Square in Columbia. In addition, Profectus Jiu-Jitsu is the business spotlight and make sure to read the recap of the fabulous Christmas Gala at the Factory at Columbia. As we proudly serve the community, our mission at Maury County Living is to connect the community with local businesses so Maury County continues to prosper. Please follow us on Instagram and Facebook and use #MAURYCOUNTYLIVING when posting. The locally owned businesses who made this issue possible thank you for your support and greatly appreciate your patronage. Many happy blessings in 2022, CONNECT WITH US @maurycountyliving

A DIFFERENT SET OF

FOUR C’s FOR BUYING AN ENGAGEMENT RING

By Jenny Livengood

The traditional four C’s of a diamond are carat weight, cut, clarity, and color. These characteristics are used to determine the quality and value of a diamond and are important industry standards. As Rick Tillis, owner of Tillis Jewelry, explains, “We hear a lot about the four C’s of purchasing a diamond, but we have a different set of four C’s. Sometimes the details of purchasing an engagement ring can be overwhelming, but the memories of the event are important, and we want it to be a very positive experience.” Tillis Jewelry in Columbia takes the time to educate their clients about the conventional four C’s but also shares a different set of four C’s which are equally important and useful when shopping for an engagement ring.

SOMETIMES THE DETAILS OF PURCHASING AN ENGAGEMENT RING CAN BE OVERWHELMING, BUT THE MEMORIES OF THE EVENT ARE IMPORTANT, AND WE WANT IT TO BE A VERY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE.

CHARACTER MATTERS

Additionally, unique designs and gemstones are a strong and vibrant

While the detailed characteristics of a ring are important, there are other factors which are just as significant. A hometown shop specializing in custom work, with experienced jewelers on staff, will provide very personalized service resulting in a positive buying experience. The relationships developed over the counter at a local jewelry store often last for years, with customers feeling more like friends, and even family. “Many of our clients are the

new trend in engagement jewelry where custom designed pieces are as exceptional as she is. Featuring precious stones such as sapphires, emeralds, rubies and more, bridal designs have become as varied and unique as the couples whose love they represent. “We are really excited when we take in a new custom design project and we love it when our clients bring us an idea for something we haven’t tried before,” exclaims Tillis.

children, even the grandchildren, of long-time customers,” remarks Tillis. “It’s really common for us to do work for multiple generations of the same family. That’s special to us, and that kind of trust is the biggest compliment we can receive.”

COMMITMENT IS FUNDAMENTAL The ring itself is a symbol of the commitment two individuals make to one another, and as such should be made with quality and integrity. Just as with previous generations, a well-made engagement ring purchased today can become a family heirloom. “Quality is very important when making this important purchase. After all, this ring you’re buying will be worn by the most important person in the world to you daily for years to come,” comments Tillis.

A WELL-MADE ENGAGEMENT RING PURCHASED TODAY CAN BECOME A FAMILY HEIRLOOM.

COURAGE IS KEY Tillis Jewelry is a full-service jewelry store, helping couples as they embark on their new journey together. “You have to be brave to start this new life together, so be brave in your choice of engagement rings. Go for what you feel drawn to in your heart. Find what speaks to you of the four C’s that led you to this point- Character, Commitment, Charm, and Courage,” says Tillis, “we would love to help you with this important step in life.”

an elegant traditional ring which stands as a statement on its own. “Modern diamonds are available in many cuts, and even in many colors,” Tillis explains, “but that is just the beginning of the options for engagement rings today. Old mine cut diamonds and European cut diamonds are great options for those who prefer a vintage look. We even offer a variety of antique engagement rings from estates we have acquired.”

JENNY LIVENGOOD has a background in art and interior design and has worked with silver and costume jewelry designs for the past 15 years. In 2016, she began working in the fine jewelry industry specializing in repurposing jewelry and non-jewelry items to make new, meaningful, and wearable creations. 5 HELPFUL TIPS FOR STARTING YOUR NEW JOURNEY TOGETHER By Kathryn York

So, you’re getting married! Once the ring is on the finger, and you’ve officially announced your engagement to the world, one of the next most anticipated parts of the journey is the wedding registry. Before you begin shopping and scanning, here are five tips to help you get started. PHOTOGRAPHY BY TATTED CAT PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEREDITH JOI

MAURYCOUNTYLIVING.COM

|

29

1 CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES TO FINE CHINA We get it ... it’s considered “tradition” to register for fine china for your wedding. But, china can be a higher priced item that you may only receive a few pieces of instead of a full set. Though china is excellent for an established home and for couples who love to entertain, it may not be the most practical gift for newlyweds. If you are in a starter home, you may not have the space to store dishes that you won’t use every day. Also, keep in mind that style preferences change over time, and china is something that tends to become more of an heirloom that sits in a cabinet than something you can truly use and enjoy on a regular basis.

Suggestion: Mix solid color dinner plates and with patterned bowls, salad plates, or dessert plates that can be changed out seasonally or as preferences change over time.

2

INCLUDE LIFESTYLE ITEMS When setting up gift registries, the most common categories are often kitchen, bed, and bath essentials. However, there are multiple things to consider when setting up your new home and life together. Don’t forget lifestyle gifts that appeal to your personal interests. From books and journals to collectible or hobbyrelated items, select items that will complement your lifestyle as a couple.

Suggestion: For example, a couple who are outdoor enthusiasts might register for a tent, sleeping bags, or hiking gear. Or, a couple who likes to travel might register for new luggage or travel accessories.

3

DON’T FORGET THE GROOM! Ladies, we all know that when it comes to shopping, we usually make the decisions, right? However, shopping for a wedding registry should be about cleverly and carefully combining his and her styles and preferences. Bigger gift items should obviously involve both parties, but when it comes to items like barware, candles, or even daily practical small appliances, don’t be afraid to pass the scanner to your groom.

Suggestion: Let the groom lead the way with the following items: bar cart accessories, such as glassware or decanters, and small appliances like coffee makers or toasters.

4

STACK YOUR REGISTRY WITH MULTIPLE PRICE POINTS

Say Yes TO THE DRESS By Kathy Fox Shopping for your wedding dress has probably been a dream since childhood and one of the most exciting parts of planning your wedding. Yet understandably it can be a bit overwhelming with so many wedding dress silhouettes to choose from, A-line, ballgown, empire, mermaid, or sheath, finding the perfect wedding dress can take some time. With that in mind, it is important to start shopping seven to nine months out from your wedding date to allow for alterations especially if the dress ends up being ordered. So before you say yes to the dress, check out what is trending in the 2022 wedding fashion world. The experience should be fun, memorable, and meaningful because all eyes will be on YOU as you walk down the aisle.

Having a budget for your dress is a must have, but don’t let that prevent you finding the gorgeous dress of your dreams locally. “No matter what your budget, every bride deserves the gown of her dreams,” says TerriJane Siega, owner of Brides on a Budget in Spring Hill. “We carry all the same designers that can be found elsewhere, the difference is we sell them for a much more affordable price.” Brides on a Budget features all brand new dresses and a range of bridal and formal wear dresses

Another local formal wear store, located in Columbia, is Lace and Co. offering an experience like no other. “Our goal with each bride is to make her feel at home and genuinely comfortable during her time spent with us. We feel our job as consultants is so much more than selling a dress, it’s educating our brides on the entire process from why certain body types look great in certain styles, how the ordering process works, alterations and so much more! Stylish Cutouts

Stylish cutouts have made their way to bridal gown designs and seem to be available in most new collections. Dresses with plunging necklines, super high slits, and open back and side cutouts are definitely trending and add impeccable detailing. But don’t worry, there are plenty of design options so you can be as daring or modest as you choose to be with your dress.

Square Necklines

Popular in the Renaissance and then Regency eras, square necklines have made a trendy comeback and are a true throwback. This 2022 wedding dress fashion works with almost every wedding style and is flattering for both large and small bustlines.

Ruffles Return

They say it’s all in the details and romantic ruffles are back. A ruffled Cinderella skirt adds that princess inspired look with a full skirt of cascading ruffles perfect for a serious fashion statement. If you love this fairytale gown then tulle ruffle, organza, or chiffon ruffles will please on both the sleeves and skirt.

Corsets

If you are a fan of Bridgerton, then the fitted bodice will be appealing as they are slimming and still show off your curves. Adding beautiful detailed accents to the bodice, these corsets are nothing like the ones from the 1500s. Like square necklines, corsets have that stylish European appeal and if you are looking for a wedding gown with a silhouette that's functional and sultry, consider a wedding dress with the trendy lingerie-inspired bodice.

Don't Forget the Groom!

Tux Tip

For the groom light colors work well in the spring, but a black or navy tuxedo is always

fashionable year-round.

Purchasing bridal accessories is a wonderful memory of your special day but can also be an investment for the future. Since bridal gowns are typically only worn once, splurging on a gorgeous piece of jewelry that can be worn for years to come makes complete sense. A pair of statement earrings or necklace can also be a fabulous complement to a minimalist gown allowing the accessories to grab the spotlight. Another trend for 2022 are bows and headbands

giving brides many affordable options for accessories.

Send-Off Dresses

Don’t forget the sendoff dress. This trend from the 40s and 50s is back and allows brides to swap out their wedding dress for a chic cocktail dress or a comfortable boho maxi dress for the after party and the couple’s getaway. n

AND COLOR TRENDS FOR 2022 By Kathy Fox Each year with great anticipation new wedding trends emerge. However, with so many weddings cancelled or postponed this past year, anything goes seems to be the motto and weddings are now more than ever about integrating individuality. Whether it is going bold or sticking with the trends, couples are expressing themselves in unique ways in 2022. Choosing the flowers is an thrilling part of the wedding planning process. CEREMONY DÉCOR BY ADDING TEXTURE AND COLOR.

For 2022, the Florist Review has non-traditional flowers, such as dried flowers, at the top of the hot list. Adding dried flower elements with fresh cut flowers is trendy, they are available in a multitude of colors, and work with any color palette. The addition of dried flowers also creates the perfect balance in designing beautiful bouquets, table decorations, and décor accents. Remember when working with the florist, using fresh cut flowers from your region during their peak season is the most economical way to stay on budget and the blooms will be at their best.

Bride and Bow is predicting a broad spectrum of color trends will be popular in 2022 because couples are focusing more on themselves instead of current trends. Neutral tones from subtle beige, warm taupe, blush, and soft tan to earthy colors like mocha, marigold yellow and burnt sienna, a deep red brown color, will be fashionable. For spring and summer weddings this year, yellows, dusty blue, lavender, and shades of berry pinks are trending. In addition to the jewel tones for fall and winter, earthy rust tones like sophisticated browns, oranges, and muddied greens will be prevalent. Warm tones in 2021 were common and the trend is predicted to continue into 2022. These colors are perfect for any season and include a variety of hues such as peach, dusty rose, brown, ruby, and sage.

Periwinkle and soft blue hues make for a beautiful classy wedding in any season and the blue palette is ideal for the hopeless romantic yearning for a wedding ceremony in a French countryside filled with lavender. Plus, it offers the bride the perfect opportunity to include “something blue” too. However, if a couple truly wants to be unique and be bold, the modern black wedding is the way to go. It’s the perfect combination of stylish white and elegant black blending together to create a remarkable setting.

This neutral bouquet uses white anemones, roses, and succulents accented with shades of blue and greenery to add fullness.

This exquisite mix of colorful blooms has it all — calla lilies, orchids, dahlias, and ranunculuses.

For the finishing touches, chic vintage metallic accents in gold, copper, and bronze are the rage. From stunning bridesmaid dresses to table décor, these metallics will add sparkling details to everything including the flowers. Be bold, step outside the box and let the light shine on your very special day! n A year-round favorite — hydrangeas.

What is Profectus? Profectus is the Latin word for progress, success, advancement, and growth and this is what Profectus Jiu-Jitsu is all about. They are focused on building and bettering. Building confidence, competence, character, and culture by bettering themselves and the community they live in. By recognizing we are all in need of a strong community and thrive in a culture of support, Profectus Jiu-Jitsu seeks to develop students, find progress through refinement, and embody their name — Progress. Succeed. Advance. Grow. What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and a grappling sport focused on the skill of asserting control over an opponent and using various techniques to gain submission, but it is also so much more than that. It is a means through which students can better themselves — both on and off the mat — and see positive growth in all aspects of life. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a great physical exercise and an incredible mental exercise. It builds both resilience and persistence in the face of adversity while building confidence and selfassurance that can overflow into every other aspect of life. As the premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Middle Tennessee, Profectus Jiu-Jitsu is the academy of choice for students of all ages, levels, and interests. Profectus Columbia, the newest location, is conveniently located downtown off the main square in a beautiful historic building. Even with four locations, Brentwood, Columbia, Fairview, and Lebanon, they keep their association small by design and avoid getting so large or becoming corporate that students get lost in the shuffle. The objective is to help students achieve their goals, not the other way around. Classes are structured so each student receives the attention and instruction deserved from qualified instructors, and at Profectus they encourage a culture that empowers students to learn in a team environment. Both adult and kids (ages 4+) programs are available, and Profectus Jiu-Jitsu is proud to boast five-star reviews across the board. The instruction is the best you can find anywhere. BY ELIZABETH SHANE Choosing your wedding cake will most definitely be the sweetest part of the wedding planning process, literally. After all, who doesn’t like cake? Before you let the tasting begin, here are a few tips to consider as you embark on your cake journey.

HAVE A REALISTIC BUDGET IN MIND. Your budget should be the first thing to consider as the cost of the cake will depend on the number of servings needed and of course the design. It takes a lot of time and skill to make a multi-layered cake and some design elements can take several days to create. If the cake is a top priority and you want it to be your dream cake, this will all need to be factored into your budget as it could easily be more than $1,000. One tip to keep in mind, rather than spending as much as $10 plus per slice of wedding cake per guest, order multiple cakes from your baker — a smaller tiered cake for photos and the cutting and a larger sheet cake for serving. Your guests will never know the difference and it will help with the budget.

CHOOSE THE FLAVOR BASED ON WHAT YOU WANT. The most popular wedding cake flavors haven’t changed much since the 1960s and the four classics are still very popular: vanilla, chocolate, yellow cake, and red velvet. These cakes are sure to be a hit for many years to come, but most importantly choose the flavors you love and be sure to check out the current trends — you may be surprised. It can be anything from classic vanilla with lemon curd filling and buttercream to a dark chocolate matcha with berries. Flavors and smells are proven to be linked to memories so create a happy memory you will taste forever and enjoy every bite!

THE CAKE’S DESIGN SHOULD COMPLEMENT THE VENUE. Take into consideration the aesthetic of the venue. Martha Stewart notes that formal weddings typically call for a multitiered cake that can be very ornate or decorated with little detail. Fresh flowers or icing embellishments certainly add to the elegance of any wedding cake. These cakes are often round, but keep in mind the square and hexagon shapes for variation, and the tiers can be stacked for a solid look or set on pillars. White is the classic color for a wedding cake, but today chocolate or colored frostings are just as popular. For the less formal wedding, almost anything goes. If you want something other than cake, opt for cupcakes, doughnuts, cookies, or pastries displayed on a tiered cake stand for that wedding cake appeal. 64

WEDDING CAKE TRENDS THIS YEAR. 2022 has some sweet wedding cake trends and WeddingWire says bold statements are in. Couples are looking for rich colors, uneven tier heights, alternative textures, messy buttercream, mid-tier pedestals, and metallic colors. Individual mini cakes, i.e., the cupcake, are also trendy and provide an element of safety for guests, but effortlessly allows for a variety of flavors. The semi-naked cake continues to be hot, and this trend is a great option for rustic and minimalistic weddings. It can be dressed up or down with flowers, greenery, or berries to showcase the couple’s unique style. Speaking of flowers, florals are always on trend. Whether they cascade down the tiers of cake or dried flowers are pressed into the icing to add color, it’s a gorgeous way to dress up the cake. Finally, don’t forget the cake topper. Toppers add that personalized touch to your cake. The Pink Bride says many toppers are made up of words, rather than a monogram or bride and groom, but no matter what your preference, trendy or traditional, opt

for something you love. Don’t forget the groom’s cake. Groom’s cakes are often decorated to honor the groom’s hobbies, tastes, and favorite pastimes. It is a cake separate from the wedding cake, always in a different flavor, that is presented by the bride to the groom that adds a fun moment to the wedding day. These cakes are typically chocolate and paired with either fruit fillings or liquored flavorings which makes a nice contrast to a white wedding cake. n

EAT, MOVE, AND BE BETTER HEALTH AND NUTRITION FOR YOUR BIG DAY AND LIFE By Lydia Fowler

Whether you are a year out or just a few

nutrition now that will help you feel your

a dietitian, I have heard many-a-bride make at least one of the following statements:

I want glowing skin! I want to lose weight!

I don’t want to be bloated on my wedding

day! I want to feel confident and look good next to my partner!

This plan is not a diet, but rather a focus on

those areas of your health and nutrition that you can have a big impact on during your engagement ... and hopefully take into

HYDRATE

Your daily hydration awareness will help you not only feel and look great today but has the long-term benefits as well. How you hydrate today and each day until your wedding day will show on that beautiful skin of yours! Be sure to also avoid or limit carbonated drinks that increase bloat as well as alcohol that can increase inflammation and wreak havoc on your goals.

PLANTS

Think of all the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). Do certain fruits and vegetables come to mind for you with each color? Great! Now expound on that, you may even have to use Google, so that you can increase the variety of nutrients you are feeding your body. Each plant food within the color wheel provides different nutrients that are necessary for your body to feel its best and meet your goals (including glowing skin and decreasing inflammation).

MOVE YOUR BODY

Yes, this is not a nutrition improvement but almost as important for meeting those wedding day goals. Move your body every day in some way. Be sure to have a mix of low intensity and high intensity activity days each week. There are benefits to each form of exercise just as there are benefits to each type of food you put in your body. Don’t skimp on what could make your skin glow, improve your confidence and mood, and help you look even more stunning in your dress. SWEAT EVERY DAY!

BE CONSISTENT OMEGA-3

This healthy type of fat is found in nuts, seeds, and delicious fishes. Try incorporating flax, chia seeds, walnuts, salmon, and sardines. These delicious foods will help improve skin health, decrease bloat, sustain energy, and decrease inflammation overall.

PROTEIN

Keeping proteins in mind at every meal is helpful for keeping you

You have heard “Consistency is KEY” and it absolutely is! You can’t be 100% on task for your goals the day before your wedding and expect miracles. If you want improvements it takes you putting in the work every day. You will feel wedding ready, no doubt! It is YOUR day! (I mean you and your partner’s day — haha!) No matter what changes you are able to make between now and your wedding day, do not forget that you are beautiful and have a perfect day ahead to celebrate you and your favorite person. Give yourself grace and walk confidently down that aisle knowing you are loved and cherished!

satisfied and curb your sweet cravings. You don’t need an exorbitant amount to reap these benefits either. Think of plant options in place of some of your animal products to help reduce inflammation as well. Plant-based proteins like tofu, tempeh, almonds, chickpeas, or lentils can be an easy substitute in some recipes.

CAPTURING

that Special Moment By Sarah Harrison PHOTOGRAPHY BY OAK + HONEY CO.

Capturing weddings and special events can be one of the most challenging and rewarding assignments for photographers. Gorgeous venues and backgrounds are charming and needed, but at the end of the day all that really matters is the way the couple feels when they look into each other’s eyes knowing they can rest easy as their precious memories are being carefully recorded.

Gina and Wesley DUCK POND MANOR

Making sure special wedding moments are captured flawlessly is the top priority for photographers, however, couples should communicate what ‘their’ important moments are during the wedding and reception to ensure the photographer has a good understanding. For Gina and Wesley, it was during their first dance. Duck Pond Manor, an all-inclusive event and wedding venue located in Sparta, Tennessee, provided the couple a magnificent day that was a beautiful blending of two families and cultures. Their schedule was tight and there wasn’t much time to breathe, but once they were dancing, you could see peace visibly wash over them.

Hannah and Sam

FIRST CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE

At the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville, Tennessee, Hannah and Sam’s love radiated during couple’s portraits. The day was a mix of overcast and thunderstorms with the photographers running out for pictures in between inclement weather, but once they had their grounding moment, the rest of the night was fun, relaxed, and enjoyed by all.

THE DAY GOES BY IN A BLUR, BUT THE PHOTOS WILL LAST

FOREVER. Most people will agree that their wedding day was one of the most anticipated days of their lives. Months or even years of meticulously planning, choosing every detail, go into each wedding day. Afterwards, aside from the memories, photos are the most tangible recollections couples have left of their wedding day events. The day goes by in a blur, but the photos will last forever. They are a way to relive all the sweet memories created — from mom helping the bride button her train to dad walking the bride down the aisle or the way the groom looks, standing at the altar waiting in anticipation for his bride. Every perfect detail dreamed of carefully captured and frozen in time forever. n

SARAH HARRISON, owner and photographer of Oak + Honey Co., is based out of Spring Hill, Tennessee. She finds joy in capturing everyday moments, inspiring mamas to embrace their postpartum bodies, and documenting everything from birth to weddings. Visit oakhoney.co for additional information. During a portrait session to celebrate their anniversary and take pictures they never got on their wedding day more than twenty years ago, for Keri and Matt it was all about having fun and reflecting on the years they have already shared together. These special moments were captured perfectly and will be treasured forever by the couple.

Imagine an intimate trip to wine country in Italy, cruising around the Caribbean, or a week in Croatia exploring the coast. No matter your preference, here are some guidelines to help plan that perfect honeymoon. CREATE A REALISTIC BUDGET. The honeymoon should be exactly what the happy couple wants, whether luxurious, adventurous or a little bit of both or everything. PRETTY PILLOWS & BEAUTIFUL BLANKETS Statement pillows create a huge impact — consider 24" pillows seem to provide that statement. Smaller pillows can be layered or used for benches and nooks. A favorite pillow combination for a sofa is a 24" followed by a 22" or 20". Using down or artificial down fill is highly recommended; poly inserts are too stiff and say Big Box store. Don’t forget to add a throw to add some color and texture on the sofa or bed.

WONDERFUL WINDOW TREATMENTS Investing in high-quality, well-crafted treatments can make a tremendous difference in any space. To determine the right curtain length, measure the end of the panel to where it is just tapping the floor. If you want more of a formal look, add about an inch and a half to the length. Make sure not to go too short; short drapes never achieve the customized look. If you intend to close your drapes, a specific width may be needed. A good rule of thumb is to measure 12-24 inches past the window on each side. Semicustom drapes come in many different styles and there are thousands of fabric selections available to customize window treatments according to your style preference and needs.

UPDATED UPHOLSTERY Upholstery selection plays a crucial role in elevating your space. Worn out or well-loved furnishings can make a room look shabby and outdated. If you have bought quality furnishings, you might consider reupholstering, but updating the lines of your sofa and chairs is usually a good idea as well. Think about using fabrics to achieve a certain look such as linen slipcovers that just kiss the floor for a casual yet sophisticated feel, throw pillows to add pops of color and interesting textures, and velvets or nail-heads to create drama.

ATTRACTIVE AREA RUGS The rug should complement the style of the room. A traditional room with a contemporary rug won’t work, just as a transitional or contemporary space would clash with a rug in a traditional floral pattern. Opting for patterns over solids can add dimension and color to the room. When selecting a rug, its pile, size, and fiber should all be carefully considered. Choose a rug that adds to your room’s décor. A patterned or colorful rug will complement rooms with a muted color palette where colorful rooms will benefit from the visual contrast a neutral rug provides. It’s also important to get a rug in the correct size. This could spell the difference between a space that looks haphazardly put together and a thoughtfully decorated one.

ACCENTS LIKE WALLPAPER, SPECIAL HARDWARE, STORAGE BINS, AND GREENERY CAN TRANSFORM A “NICE” SPACE INTO A SHOWSTOPPER AND TEXTURED ART, TAPESTRIES, OR WALL SCONCES WILL BREATHE LIFE INTO THOSE BLANK WALLS.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Achieving sophisticated home interiors lies in the details. In often overlooked spaces like hallways, mudrooms, and powder rooms, attention to detail can create a unique vibe and stylish functionality. Accents like wallpaper, special hardware, storage bins, and greenery can transform a “nice” space into a showstopper and textured art, tapestries, or wall sconces will breathe life into those blank walls. LET'S HAVE A PARTY!

Soirée

ON THE SQUARE By Katie Baker

PHOTOS BY HOLLY DOBBS PHOTOGRAPHY

On the outside of 14 Public Square the building looks the same as most others downtown. There’s a sign for a law office and a tidy front entrance below six arched windows overlooking the courthouse. The inside foyer is formal with wood paneled walls and a carpeted staircase that leads to what was once the Porter Walker Hardware store showroom. Tractors used to welcome guests to the second floor, but now a dazzling luxury loft called Soirée on the Square resides in its place, along with a cardboard Elvis, but that will be explained in a moment. Reams and Carey Powers purchased the building in 2016 and walked into a mess of grease covered floors and years of neglect, but they could see the potential. When PHOTOS BY

When it came to the theme of the venue the Powers pulled from their shared time in Memphis with a homage to the King of Rock and Roll. To really get into the spirit of this interview Reams arrived with blue suede shoes and revealed their first song at their wedding was Elvis’ “Pocket Full of Rainbows.” Blue velvet couches and Elvis figurines accent the dens, and newspaper clippings hang on the walls of the catering kitchen. The most eclectic part of the space is the Elvis themed “throne”. The peacock blue half bath was inspired by the pet peacocks that used to roam Graceland and is further accented with gold tile, black and white Elvis photos, and framed records of his greatest hits.

Soirée on the Square can sleep up to seven guests in its four bedrooms and two and a half baths. The loft space is ideal for small groups that want a weekend getaway in the heart of Columbia. The location alone is one of the reasons the Powers purchased the building, “We enjoy restoring historic buildings and with this one overlooking the square you can hear the courthouse bells and watch the parades go by,” commented Carey. The venue can hold up to sixty guests for larger events like the recent Maury County Living magazine launch party, weddings, bridal and baby showers, holiday parties, and more. Party planners can bring in their own vendors and the Powers offer extra chairs and a few tables as needed. Caterers will love the dual wet bar and gourmet kitchen featuring a hidden walk-in pantry. Beyond the kitchen is an additional prep space in the laundry room with an extra sink and dishwasher. 88

Soirée on the Square was such a rewarding experience that the Powers have since opened a sister space down the street named Soirée on North Main. The second venue is slightly smaller and is a mix of modern and eclectic antiques. The mix of businesses around the square grows every month and having a unique venue with overnight host space has been positive for downtown. With these two venues, and maybe more to come in Maury County, Carey says, “We love downtown Columbia, and Columbia as a whole, so to be a part of the renovations of downtown is something we like being a part of.” n

Private events have full use of the loft which makes it fun to mix and mingle while admiring the finished space. The Owner’s Suite is a knockout with oversized windows and a glam walk-in shower/ tub. The guest bedrooms are a mix of comfort and awe with a faux floating bed in one of the 3 guest rooms. Sparkling chandeliers hang from the original rafters illuminating the rough-hewn wood floors.

PLACE YOUR FEET IN GOOD HANDS AT BONE AND JOINT INSTITUTE OF TENNESSEE By Lyndsay Sullivan

Foot and ankle specialists Ronald Derr, D.O. and Geoff Watson, M.D. of Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee.

From toddlers taking their first steps, students receiving their diplomas, brides descending the aisle, and all those moments in between — your feet quite literally carry you through life. While your feet might not be your top priority in your healthcare journey, it’s important to recognize and respond to ailments and injuries when they occur. In either instance, foot and ankle orthopaedic specialists are a great resource to help alleviate pain with multiple treatment options available.

TREATING TRAUMATIC INJURY Sometimes, injuries can be inevitable. Especially during the winter months, indoor sports, cold muscles, slips and falls and extreme winter sports contribute to an increase in traumatic injuries of the feet and ankle. However, some injuries may be preventable with proper preparation. “The benefit of colder weather is that it often forces people to wear protective shoes, adding a layer of support and protection for your feet and ankles,” said Dr. Derr. “Stretching your calf muscles also minimizes the stress on your feet and can help prevent injury.” When injuries do strike, Bone and Joint Institute physicians have a wealth of treatment options ready to explore, from diagnostic imaging to splinting and casting to custom orthotics. If surgery is the best treatment option, rest assured your feet are in good hands.
