Board Botschaft: Black is the New Black and Love is Blue

Mavs did not disappoint when asked to post their favorite P-car photos on Facebook. In short order, I received over 60 responses. While some affirmed a life-long dream, many are simply stunning glamour shots worthy of a Slipstream cover. Whether feeding an ongoing passion or building a legacy, I found that ‘there is no substitute.’ Thanks to those who submitted photos. Due to the sheer volume of submissions, I’ve created a series organized in alphabetical order by color—let’s begin with Black and Blue. Stay tuned because future issues of Slipstream will feature these shades: Red, Silver White, and Yellow. Revel in the imagery. Read the stories. Reminisce. Drive. Know that we ‘get’ you. Tune in to the series of member favorite photos.

A classic color, nothing is a substitute for black. Personal experience has taught me that black requires an inordinate effort to keep clean. On that note, ‘hats off’ for these wonderful shots. Do not miss the variety of generations presented here.

I do believe that blue is a terrific color for a Porsche. Member photos show a wide range of shades that are equally beautiful. If love had a color, I think it would be blue. So, there you have it: clear proof that there is no substitute. Stay tuned. This series will feature more member photos: Red, Silver, White and Yellow.

Anyone can be a Porsche owner. From that group a certain subset of individuals come to an understanding of the brand and tradition which nurtures a certain level of camaraderie. This is indicated in the little wave as you sit next to another Porsche at the light or a flash of the headlights as you pass another owner. In all of that, there is a certain diligence of understanding the brand inferred in just being in the Porsche Club in the first place. More of us than less, of course, take the opportunity in this engagement to participate in the various planned events. A few from that group from time to time take advantage of the unplanned or semi-regular pop-up gatherings to mingle with the more involved members and hear the numerous stories and tales of Porsche adventures. Of those members, there are a few that show up hours before the advertised start time exercising their “hardcore” enthusiasm for Porsche-ness! Even fewer choose to participate in managing and leading the club activities… Michael Hays participates in all of the above.

Michael is the Maverick PCA Board Co-Chair for the Tours along with Ted Martin. He has been involved with the board managing the tours for two years and thanks to his tour leaders, the volunteers and Ted and his leadership, they are enjoying record participation.

He is one of the “Hardcore” earliest arrivals to the events and a huge fan of the Porsche cars and tradition offering his knowledge and experiences to everyone! Thanks to the Maverick Mav of the Month, Michael Hays!!

The Maverick of Month recognizes one member of the club each month for exemplifying what it means to be a Maverick. Volunteers, Board of Director Chairs and Members at Large going out of their way to give back and lead are the backbone of our club. Winners receive our undying thanks, and a $75 gift card provided by Autobahn Porsche. Do you know someone that embodies what it means to be a Maverick? Nominate them for the Maverick of the Month! volunteers@mavpca.org

Let the Porsches Sing: Motor Vehicle Sundown

A truly unique event took place this April on the University of North Texas campus. Nine Porsches, a Ford Model A, and a police car got together on a parking lot. Parking in a half circle, each of the eleven “performers” had to do specific actions with their cars according to a detailed score in minutes and seconds, controlled by two conductors: honking, running the windshield wipers, switching headlights on and off, opening and closing the trunk/frunk and doors, move convertible tops, and more.

suggested to involve not only my own Porsches but also other members of the Maverick Region. Bill Kruder was enthusiastic about this project and helped to find eight other brave members to come and participate in this performance. Brzoska and his students arranged the piece by adding the driving components to the score which greatly improved the excitement. To see Porsches (two aircooled 911s, two 914s, two 718s, and

The two “soloists” had extra actions: the police car used its lights and siren, the Ford its funny bells and whistles. Most performers had a “navigator” on the passenger seat instructing the actor to do the right action at the right time. More actions came into play: each car had to go forward and reverse or drive on the parking lot clockwise and counterclockwise. This was incredible fun for everyone involved: conductors, performers, spectators . . . but what was this all about?

In 1960, the American artist George Brecht created this piece as part of experimental art, called “Fluxus” –everyday actions put on stage, controlled by some sort of organization which by itself is ruled by chance operations. While the original worked with index cards that got mixed to decide about the sequence of actions, one uses computer chance algorithms nowadays. The piece was first performed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and was then mostly forgotten until Matthias Brzoska, a German music professor, performed it in Berlin in the 1980s. Brzoska is teaching at UNT this spring. When he told me about his idea to perform this piece as a student project, I immediately

WITH THE DALLAS CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

Several students turned out to the Southlake Mavs & Mochas from the Dallas Center for Photography to take photos along with the instructor, Richard Klein. All really seemed to enjoy the subject matter, and the morning cloud cover made for a good day to experiment and learn. Thanks to Alan Nusbaum for coordinating with DCP and the students for their time and talents. The Day of the Big Race

The night before a big race is always hard on my nerves. Will I keep a good pace? Will I get lost on the course? I hope I wake up with good energy to get the job done. So, preparation begins with getting the right fuel the night before, getting out the good shoes, and laying out the perfect outfit for the weather.

The next morning, I jumped out of bed before my alarm went off and I was feeling GOOD! In all seriousness, my body doesn’t really move that fast anymore first thing in the morning but on this Saturday morning I was feeling quite peppy. I got dressed in all of my special race gear, and with coffee in hand, my husband Bryan and I were out the door headed to the Big race!

We got there really early before the sun was even up. I checked the course map for the tenth time. With our special VIP parking pass, my green Macan was directed to the starting line of the Texas Big Star Half Marathon and 5k.

Okay, I will let you in on the secret of my story. I got a phone call from Wendy Shoffit a few days before the big marathon asking if I would be interested in leading the runners in my car. Interested? Are you kidding me?!? I was honored! I get to show off my beautiful girl “Lucky” as the official pace car. Bryan and I are avid runners, so we felt good about how the course would be laid out and felt confident we could pace the runners

without being in their way. One of the race directors, Logan, came over to us and said “It is GO time!” We started our engine and rapidly accelerated to our 11.5 mph pace. I know what you are thinking, this sounds easy right?? NO! 13 miles of stress began. As we approached each intersection, we had to signal to the wonderful Frisco police officers that the race leaders were quickly following all while coordinating our position with the race directors by communicating where we were on course at all times, while also avoiding other hazards that moved into the path of the runners. Not to mention, all while maintaining a perfect hundred yards in front of the leader.

As we got to mile 13, our stress had turned to joy! Our adrenaline was pumping now because we just realized we had set a PR (personal record) for our fastest half marathon ever! I am available for other pace car opportunities that might come up with the FIA…wink, wink.

Maverick Women Behind the Wheel: Finding Time

How can it be June already? After enjoying a month of holidays after the December 2022 cookie swap, we held our monthly meetings, patiently waiting for weather to improve. In fact, each month our committee of four meets either in person or via zoom to discuss a variety of activities for our members. Sometimes, it’s challenging to find the time.

find our favorite ways home – some of us with the top down. Also in April, we requested help from our Facebook members to find a location for a springtime pop-up photo shoot. Michael Durovick reached out to us early in the year offering his skills, so we set up a morning shoot at Winfrey Point on White Rock Lake on Sunday, April 30. To find the perfect location at White Rock, two Mavs (and one of the cutest puppies ever) walked the nine-mile trail around the whole lake the week prior.

Eleven ladies and a few husbands joined Michael on a comfortable, cloudless morning at Winfrey Point. The men worked hard helping us into the perfect spot, shooing away bird photographers, and bringing extra vehicles. Michael took individual car and model shots, close-ups, and group shots.

May’s event was a donation drive from the Motoring Mavs at Mayo event to Mineral Wells to benefit the Hope House on Saturday, May 20. Members brought gently used clothing and hygiene products to help the women at the domestic violence shelter.

With so much going on, we aim to schedule around other Maverick events and PCA events beyond Texas. We also try to hold our gatherings all over the Metroplex. Recently, our Facebook page hit 213 members, and we continue to meet new women at each event. Let me catch you up on what’s been happening and what’s in store.

A dozen of us met in Irving at The Ranch for a Friday happy hour on March 10. Thrilled with a sunny warm day, we felt fortunate to sip cocktails, socialize, relax, and dine outdoors. Irving proved to be a decent location, attracting members from McKinney to Fort Worth.

On April 21, 18 members made the 94-mile trip north on 75 to Atoka, Oklahoma, to enjoy a scrumptious lunch at Country Music Legend Reba McEntire’s new restaurant, aptly named Reba’s Place. In one of their many private rooms, we dined on specialty burger entrees accompanied by fried dill pickles, burnt ends, and fries – both hand-cut russet and sweet potato versions, served family style. Stuffed, our eyes opened wide when servers delivered dessert plates. Much like the unique signature craft cocktails mixed behind the restored antique bar, a complex, crunchy sweet-and-salty cookie of sorts sat next to a giant ice cream sandwich. Nestled between two rich sugar cookies, a giant helping of frozen chocolate ice cream was impossible to say “no” to.

As we wrapped up our lengthy lunch, a staff member led us upstairs to the third floor. Beyond a cozy library, we browsed the expansive gift shop and took a group photo behind the cash registers before parting ways to

We have three more dates for your calendars. Saturday, July 29, will be our All-Female Track Day at Eagles Canyon Raceway. Last year’s was a blast, and it’s perfect for first timers to learn their limits and see what their cars can do. Not a first timer? Sign up, share your knowledge, and perfect your skills in this stress-free environment. The world-class venue is located in Decatur, Texas. More details will follow, and the registration will open in June.

In August, a handful of women will work a little harder writing special features for the October Slipstream. With a September 10 deadline that approaches quicker than one might think, please reach out if you have ideas for articles. I love targeting different women or groups for my October features, and this year I want to hear from the female passengers and navigators! Find me at events or reach out via Facebook to share your story.

We’d love a strong female showing on Saturday, October 14, at the Mavs & Mochas at the National Breast Cancer Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Look to our Facebook page or future articles to see what we have in store.

Circling back to the 2022 cookie swap, it was such a hit that we’re doing it again. We are looking at the first Sunday afternoon in December. Details will follow in the fall.

Look for pop up happy hours, breakfasts, or lunches throughout the nice weather months. We are working on logo tumblers and thinking about a new long-sleeve T-shirt design. Reach out to our co-chairs if you’d like to become more involved. We need your event planning, design, writing, and photography skills!

Equipe Rapide Autocross Series: Cup 3 & 4

The Autocross Season is in full swing already this year. This will update you on Event 3, the double header in Oklahoma and the Mirrorcross event double header coming up back in Oklahoma June 3. Both Oklahoma events are double headers. Course maps for most of these are attached. Event three was at Burleson High School where we had 97 participants and a wet event for the morning runs, drying mid-day and dry in the afternoon. This is a traditional smaller lot more like the roots of autocross.

Event 4 was part of a double-header weekend with SCCA at the Frederick, Oklahoma Site. This WW2 airfield is still an active airport but we had access to almost all the aircraft parking areas to set up courses much like what competitors find at the top National Championship autocross events. Our Group did the Saturday Event with 59 entries and SCCA did the Sunday event with 67 entries. It was forecast to be a rainy weekend which scared off some, but only rained Saturday until about noon.

The next event will be a Mirrorcross back in Oklahoma with dual courses and drag race style starts on June 3rd. Oklahoma SCCA will be running a single course event on Sunday the 4th to make this another double header weekend.

The Mayor of Frederick and people all over the area are involved in bringing these events to this site making it a worthwhile trip. It is less than 200 miles for most DFW participants.

PCA Sim Racing: Let’s Go Racing!

In last month’s article we showed how to get started in PCA Sim Racing by going through the Onboarding process and joining the Entry Class League. After you have completed your five Entry Class League races and successfully completed your check ride, the next step in the progression is to join the Main League and be classified in one of the four League Classes.

The Main League contains all the members of PCA Sim Racing with the exception of the Entry Class League. It is the combination of the members of the four national League Classes and is used in Special Events when all four classes race together. More information is available here: https://pcasimracing.com/leagues/.

The four national League Classes are:

• Challenge (red group)

• Sport (green group)

• Club (orange group)

• Pro (blue group)

PCA Sim Racing League Class assignments are based on driver qualifications, experience, and driver safety. This allows League groupings of drivers with similar pace and skill. League Class rebalancing is done twice per year after completion of the national Series races.

And now we get to the most exciting part: the racing! PCA Sim Racing currently offers seven racing series that run at various times throughout the year. Each series is unique and provides drivers with varying degrees of competition.

The PCA Sim Racing series are:

• Series Racing

• Team Racing Series

• Zone Group Racing

• Arrive & Drive

• Summer Fun Series

• Entry Class League Racing

• PCA Pro GT3 Cup Racing

Series Racing is PCA Sim Racing’s longest running racing series, with Series 1 having been run in spring 2019. “The original intent was to model the PCA Club Racing format on the iRacing platform. Points are awarded based on finishing position over the season to determine the four champions. Maverick Billy Smith II won the inaugural Series 1 championship.

Series racing seasons are typically seven to eight races and are held twice per year in the spring and fall. Races for the four national League Classes are held on

different nights of the week. All races are broadcast live on YouTube with professional commentators calling the wheel-to-wheel action. Just search “PCA Sim Racing” on YouTube and check it out.

Series 10 started in March and features 60-minute races, with one pit stop for fuel and tires. Three different Porsches, the GT3 R, GT4, and 911 Cup, will be used over the course of the Series. Series 11 is scheduled for October – November 2023. You can find more information here: https://pcasimracing.com/racing-series/ https://pcasimracing.com/racing-series/.

There are eleven Mavericks racing in Series 10, with three in Pro, four in Club, two in Sport, and two in the Entry League. Wyatt Gooden leads the Pro league with four races completed and four to go.

Team Racing Series uses iRacing’s support of virtual driving Teams. You can invite other drivers to join your team and race against other teams, usually in longer endurance races (3-6 hours). Driver swaps are completed virtually during pit stops.

The six-race 2023 season started in January. The cars used are the Porsche 911 GT3 R and the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR. All cars and all League Classes race on the track at the same time. Teams consist of a minimum of two drivers with no maximum. Each registered driver must drive a Fair Share as determined by iRacing. Team championships are held in four categories: GT3 ProAm, GT3 Am, GT4 ProAm, and GT4 Am, with teams being classified according to their drivers’ League Class.

The 2023 season features two 3-hour races, two 4-hour races, and two 6-hour races. Races are run approximately once a month, so they run concurrently with other PCA Sim Racing seasons. Points are awarded based on finishing position and race length to determine the four championships.

To be successful, teams must implement real world racing strategies: avoiding damage while navigating multiclass traffic, and preserving equipment. You can find more information here: https://pcasimracing.com/teamracing/.

Zone Group Racing is intended to allow PCA Sim Racing drivers in similar time zones to drive and race together, as well as meet at real-life Zone and Region events, just as PCA Zones are designed to unify club members by geographical region.

PCA is divided into 14 Zones that are a collection of the 147 PCA Regions. The Maverick Region is in Zone 5 and is included in the Central Zone Group.

PCA Sim Racing groups the 14 Zones into five Zone Groups: ZG 1 (Wildcats), ZG 2 & 4 (The Founders of Schnell), ZG 3 & 12 (Hurricane Alley),

ZG 5, 10, & 13 (Central Zone Group – CZG), and ZG 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, & 14 (Wild West Zones – WWZ). You can find more information here: https://pcasimracing. com/zone-groups-2/

Entry Class League Racing season follows the national Series Racing schedule, although the format includes a Heat race and a shorter Main feature. Races are not broadcast live, as the emphasis is on learning safe driving and racecraft in a low-pressure environment. You can find more information here: https://pcasimracing.com/entryclass-league/.

PCA Pro GT3 Cup Racing had its inaugural seven-race season in 2022. This series pits past top ten PCA Sim Racing Pro Class sim-drivers against real-life Pro drivers from teams racing the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

The car used, of course, was the iRacing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992 version).

The five Zone Groups coordinate eDe classes, practices, and practice races each week during the racing season for the four national classes. eDe instructors are available to help with driving and racecraft skills.

Zone Groups face off against each other in a championship series of races once per year. This year the championship featured a three-race series based on the racing team format. Eight cars per Zone Group could be entered in each race with each car having a team of four drivers, one in each of the four national League Classes. The car being driven was the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR.

Arrive & Drive series began in 2022 and runs weekly throughout the year. It features a low-key racing environment where sportsmanship, comradery, and clean racing are the goals. No points are kept, no championships are awarded. If you are serious about winning, please look at the other PCA Sim Racing options.

Races are Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. Races are typically 45 minutes long. The track and car to be used are announced on Sunday morning. The cars available are the 911 GT3 R, the GT3 992 Cup, the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR, and the Ruf RT 12 R Track. Setups are fixed so all drivers are driving the same car. It truly is an arrive-and-drive event. You can find more information here: https://pcasimracing.com/aad/.

Summer Fun Racing is a series of fun races run from June through September. Points are kept for each of the national League Classes, but the points are secondary to the goals of sportsmanship, comradery, and fun.

Summer 2022 featured a nine-race season driving three different cars. Grids were typically 25 – 35 cars, with over 70 drivers participating in a least one race. The season was hosted by the Wild West Zones, but drivers from any Zone Group were welcome to race. You can find more information here: https://pcasimracing.com/summer-funseries/.

Races were 40 minutes long with no pit stops. A mistake or penalty was sure to send a driver to the back of the field. The competition was intense! All the races were broadcast live on YouTube with professional commentators. Ross Bentley of Speed Secrets fame joined the commentary on several races.

This series is invitation only, so you need to start practicing! More information is available here: https:// pcasimracing.com/pro/.

Maverick Marktpreis: 924

What’s the most affordable Porsche model? Many people would answer the 914, the 1st gen Boxster, or the early Cayenne. All solid guesses. However, this dubious honor goes to the little-talked-about 924. Excellence’s Buyer’s Guide priced it starting at $3,500!

924 was developed as the entry level Porsche. It is a two-

door, 2+2 coupe, with an Audi-derived 95 hp inline four engine. It is Porsche’s first front engine, first water-cooled, and first transaxle car. Despite a painfully slow straight line acceleration (9.6 seconds, 0-62 mph), it was praised for its balanced handling, styling, and reliability. It was a successful model. It sold over 120,000 units from 1976 to 1988.

“The term “transaxle” is a combination of “transmission” and “axle.” The engine transmits power to the rear axle via a driveshaft housed in a rigid cover pipe.” ~ Porsche.com

Coffee, Cars & Conversation

Talk about a small world - and it took the Porsche Club to bring us together. As most of you know, I take great pride in my nearly 40-year career with the Penney Company. That being said, I might be the last of the generations that spend a lifetime with one company. Well, since retiring I have had a chance to meet a lot of people. Several years ago at a Mavs & Mochas, I ran into this guy who looked really familiar to me. Well, sure enough, we knew one another through JCPenney. Fast forward to the last 4-5 months, I have seen Bob out a lot with us. We struck up some fun conversations over coffee discussing the people we both know through JCPenney and the ones we both worked with or for. At any rate, having criss-crossed the Penney building amongst some 4,500 other associates, it took a car to bring us together.

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .

Bob DiRienzo, member since 2012 Owner, 2022 718 GTS 4.0

Bill Kruder: So, where are you from?

Bob DiRienzo: I grew up in Totowa, New Jersey, just west of Paterson, which is about 30-45 minutes north of Newark. I lived there over 20 years, attending grade school in Totowa, and then Passaic Valley Regional High School in neighboring Little Falls. My parents lived there over 38 years, moving to Florida after my dad retired in 1988.

BK: How about college?

BD: I went to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. It’s a

small Liberal Arts school about an hour north of Harrisburg, PA.

BK: What did you study?

BD: I initially enrolled in the Chemical Engineering program. I think that had to do with family background and influence. And it allowed me to get a great summer job working

BK: How did that work out for you (smiling)?

BD: (laughing) I think it worked out ok as I was with them for the next nearly 40 years, retiring in May of 2012.

BK: Full disclosure to the reader: as you may know, I know a thing or two about JCPenney having spent nearly 40 years myself retiring in 2012.

BK: So, what all did you do in your career there?

BD: That’s the nice thing. Back then you could stay with one company and work in a variety of positions. These days, no one seems to stay with one company very long. They move out to move up.

BK: Let’s stop there for a second. Why do you think that was or is?

BD: Well, like you, our generation grew up with role models that stayed for life with their jobs, and in return, companies rewarded employees with pension plans. That being said, today only about a quarter of companies offer them, and it’s a Catch-22 on why they don’t and why people don’t stay.

for Public Service Electric and Gas. After that first year, I switched majors and received my degree in Business Administration, graduating in 1974.

BK: What did you do after college then?

BD: Well, I thought I might work for Kodak located in Rochester. I really enjoyed photography and thought that would be a great fit. Then a woman at school said she was just hired at JCPenney in New York City. I liked the idea of working in New York, interviewed with the Penney Company and was hired as a “Control Buyer” in the Catalog Division.

BK: So back to your “jobs”.

BD: As I progressed, I became a Media Manager in Catalog, went on to Catalog Circulation, then moved into Corporate Marketing, managing what we called “customer file marketing.” That involved analyzing which customers would receive our catalogs, store promotions, and emails.

BK: So, how did you and Joyce meet?

BD: (smiling) That too had a Penney connection. Joyce and I worked together in the kids area. We shared a large office area (which we named

the “bullpen”) with four other associates. Well, we started talking more and more and finally went out. We dated for over a year and got married in 1979.

BK: And family?

BD: We have two daughters: Nicole lives in Virginia, and Amanda lives in Colorado. We also have four grandkids now.

BK: So, when did you move to Texas?

BD: As many know, the Penney Company decided to move its headquarters to Plano in 1987. We moved here in 1988. We are in our third house now in West Plano.

BK: Ok, let’s talk cars. First car?

BD: That was a ‘59 6-volt VW Beetle that we bought from a neighbor. I drove it through high school.

BK: Was that the start of German cars for you?

BD: No, not really. I was really more into American muscle cars. My senior year in high school I had a ‘69 Dodge Charger (383 4-bbl.) Honestly, I had more of an affliction for motorcycles, acquiring my first as a senior in high school, a BSA 250. I would go on to ride for the next 50 years. Matter of fact, I taught a motorcycle safety course for 25 years, graduating over 3,200 riders.

BK: So, then how did you get into Porsches?

BD: We had a 2002 Miata and really enjoyed the “speedster” experience. When it came time to replace it, we checked out BMW and Audi first. Then we decided to check out the Boxster and we were hooked. We ordered a 2012 base Boxster and loved it. We drove that car for nearly 10 years before ordering our current GTS.

BK: I hear you are a musician? Maybe even a rock star! (smiling) RD: (laughing) Both may be an exaggeration but yes, I do play guitar and yes, we do have a band.

BK: How did that get started?

BD: Well, I started in garage bands in my teens and we had some success. Matter of fact, when it came to going to college it was decision time; go full time into the band or go to school. I chose school (smiling).

BK: But you do play today in a band?

BD: Yes I do. We’re called “REPLICA.” We are a classic rock cover band, but throw in some other genres for a bit of variety. We play in DFW area bars and restaurants a couple of times a month.

Talk about taking the long road to Driving Friendships!

Motorsport Mike: Meet the Driver - Lou Marchant

Competitive, innovative, intelligent, and humorous are just a few adjectives I can use to describe our March “Meet The Driver,” Lou Marchant.

The backdrop on Lou’s childhood helped set the stage for her racing skills and innovative spirit. She grew up on a ranch in rural

to watch The Prewar Races. Across the pond she went, taking a job with Rand and moving close to Silverstone so that she could attend their driving school. During her first lesson, Lou told the group how she was black flagged for going in the wrong direction on the track –yep, the British way.

Lou entertained an enthusiastic crowd of close to 50 Maverick Region members with her own PowerPoint presentation highlighting her life story and racing career. There is no way possible for me to come close to capturing all of Lou’s exciting adventures – you just had to be there!

Montana almost 60 miles away from the nearest town. Educated at home through the 8th grade, she was taught (out of necessity) to ride motorcycles and drive cars and pickup trucks by the young age of 10! To obtain her driver’s license, all that was required was to look into a viewfinder and identify a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge – BINGO –license awarded! No written or road test needed for this young lady!

Lou had an early fascination with motorcycles and British sports cars. Attracted solely by the color and mystique, her first car, a red MG roadster, didn’t even run! To pay for her education (Masters of Engineering from SMU), Lou started her own car company and joined the Texas MG Register in 1980. The bait that hooked Lou into her passion for racing vintage British roadsters was a trip to Silverstone

Lou’s greatest racing accomplishment to date was her victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (see photo). To this day, Lou continues her passion for vintage racing at some of the most famous tracks across the country, like Indy, Watkins Glen, VIR, Road America, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, and many more. If you are fortunate, you might see Lou pulling her race car trailer in a renovated ambulance (see photo) she uses for her sleeping quarters and entertaining fans with margaritas crafted from her own machine that travels shotgun with her to all the tracks.

As I previously noted, there are so many other exciting chapters to Lou’s story that it’s impossible for me to cover everything she has accomplished. Lou was quick to thank all of her supporters for helping her live her passion – I’m willing to bet that with her drive and hunger for living life to its fullest that she’s probably helped more people achieve their passions!

DIY: Clear Bra Removal

When PPF (paint protection film) entered the mainstream of the sport/exotic car realm in the ‘90s, it was a viable consideration for someone who owned a Porsche. After all, it provided a suitable barrier between the car’s paint and the harsh elements that a Porsche driven daily would encounter. It shined up nice, and simple scratches could be eliminated with just an application of heat from a common hair dryer. Good Stuff.

Fast forward a decade or three, and protective films applied back in the old days now show their age in ways that detract from the overall aesthetics of your favorite ride. And no hair dryer is going to solve this problem. The old girl may be aging well, but that scratched and cracked mini-bra just isn’t cutting it anymore. Some things get better with age: fine wine and spirits, one’s IRA (hopefully), and Nicholas Cage movies. Unfortunately, PPF is not one of them.

Our first-gen Caymans suffered from discolored, deeply scratched and cracked stone guards on my wife’s car, and the half-bra on mine also showed cracks and scratches. There

was a very visible demarcation line on the front clip as well.

The goal was to get the films removed without damaging the underlying paint. In the case of the half-bra, if the film could not be removed safely, I was willing to spring for a respray of the front clip, as it already had a few stone chips on it anyway. Some local shops were less than enthused to take on this project, mostly because of the age of the film: 14 years. One shop wanted $400 just to remove the stone guards. It was then that I considered DIYing the job.

After scouring the Internet, I discovered a few techniques on removing PPF - some questionable, some novel, some a bit ridiculous (subjectively speaking). I elected to use the steamer method, as it seemed the safest and least abusive to the paint surface. The common denominator in all these techniques was the application of heat, presumably to make the PPF more pliable, and the adhesive’s grip on the film less effective. Then the film is simply scraped off.

Initial prep consisted of testing to see if the film would lift from the surface of each panel safely by pushing a plastic razor blade under a corner of the film. If it lifts without any damage to the paint, you should be good to go. A good tip is to preheat the surfaces by utilizing the services of our megacandlepower friend: the sun. I wheeled the car out of the garage into the sunlight on a 100-degree day. About an hour later, the temperature of the bodywork was over 140 degrees.

My weapon of choice for this project was the McCulloch MC1275 heavy duty steamer. This little unit has a myriad of uses besides film removal. You can steam your headliner, windows, even the brake calipers.

thinking of trying it on my wheel wells next.

Once you crank up the steamer and attach the steam jet nozzle, you can then liberally steam the entire surface of a body panel. After several passes, start removing the film with a plastic chisel scraper, a few inches at a time. The

28 June
I’m UNNECESSARY DISCLAIMER: A video on YouTube illustrating the steamer method show an entire film being removed as one piece. This will NOT be the case when you remove the 10+ year old film from your Porsche. Be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time on tedious work. From top left: cracked PPF, steaming, scraping and the residue, finished product.

process is pretty arduous; it’s definitely slow going removing the film inches at a time. Plastic chisel scrapers are made specifically for removing stickers and decals without scratching the bodywork. Harbor Freight sells an acceptable set of four of these chisel scrapers at their stores, right next to the WD-40. Pick up a can of the stuff while you’re there; you’ll need it later. I also used a small plastic razor blade scraper for smaller areas like the mirrors and stone guards.

After the plastic film is removed, the next step is to remove the adhesive used to bond the film to the bodywork. There will be a LOT of adhesive residue, and it most likely will take as much time to remove it as the film did. I decided not to use a glue removal chemical, as I reckoned it would be rather harsh on the freshly exposed surface. Instead, I used the product in the blue spray can right next to the duct tape in every man’s toolbox: WD-40. Nothing sticks to WD-40. Nothing. Spray it liberally over the residue.

Now the long, arduous scraping process begins again, and it may need to

be repeated several times to remove all the residue. You should use the plastic razor blade scraper for this job. Small residue “shadows” can be removed with some fine polish applied by hand. Make sure the surface is absolutely free of any residue before the next final step.

I used denatured alcohol applied to a microfiber towel to quickly remove the WD-40. Then a detail spray was used to clean the entire surface before polishing. I used Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound applied on an orange pad with a random orbital polisher, then finished it off with my “sealant du jour,” Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Wax.

The end result was great! The finish looked like I imagined it did when the PPF was initially installed. And there was no visible demarcation line where the half-bra was installed. Success!

So yes, PPF removal is very DIY-able. If you tackle this project, you’ll discover that by far, the most important item on the bill of materials is elbow grease and patience - lots of it. And you’ll feel that sense of accomplishment that you “did it yourself.”

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

Well, spring has done its thing and now summer appears to be upon us. I have ingeniously skipped spring cleaning to take advantage of the cooler weather to take drives instead. So friends, it looks like I’ve signed up for summer projects in the heat. Was it worth it? Ask me in August. But the thought of cleaning and refreshing is our theme today.

While I wait for my figurative ship to come in, many of you are waiting for your literal ships to come in with your shiny new playthings. Or necessary work things, sorry. In any case, it seems to be the season of refreshment and renewal. New cars keep showing up like Christmas at Mav events. It’s got me thinking. Are you like me with a hoarder mentality, keeping everything you’ve ever touched? Or do you like to mix up the fleet every so often? I suspect it could be like ripping off a bandage and get easier each time, but the thought of parting with anything is still challenging. How many

times have you heard someone say “I wish I hadn’t sold that one.”? How do you know this one won’t be that one? It’s enough to keep you up at night, isn’t it? On the other hand, having something new has a certain appeal. Think of the modifications! So many fun boxes to receive. New buttons to configure, and the new car smell. It does sound appealing. If you’ve ever visited the configurator, and let’s be honest who hasn’t, you’ve likely been tempted to hit the “buy now” button. Maybe this is the year? Actually it will be next year at this point, all the more reason to get serious. I’m putting in some overtime just in case.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be new, new. I swing to the oldies and prefer sweating in the summer remember? It is still possible to get a good value out there in the used market despite what you’ve heard. Just remember, if you’ve gotten something new and just want to give rides, I’m always available. Enjoy the Drive.
