ow would you like to wake up in the morning with views over the green rice terraces of the Kedu Plain towards the world’s largest and oldest Buddhist sanctuary? A honeymoon at Amanjiwo is an enchantingly different experience, with the tranquility and graciousness of Java at your embrace. Amanjiwo (meaning “peaceful soul”) overlooks Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist sanctuary, in the rural heartland of Central Java.
Not surprisingly, Borobudur Temple is a point of reference and central theme for the property, and Amanjiwo’s 36 suites-only rooms are divided into 4 suite categories: Garden, Borobudur, Garden and Borobudur Pool, and the very opulent two-bedroom private Dalem Jiwo suite. This luxuriously private suite comes with its own 15-metre pool and a Rotunda that is perhaps the best feature of this accommodation. Almost all of the suites face Borobudur Temple; make sure you get one with a view of the temple. As is characteristic with Aman Resorts, Amanjiwo offers an authentic, highly localised experience that fully immerses guests in ancient Javanese culture. There are plenty of options to experience ceremonies, temples and antique shops, as well as private dawn and sunset visits to Borobudur and other archeological monuments in the vicinity.

Dramatically overlooking Lombok Strait and Bali’s most revered volcano, Mount Agung, Amankila, which means peaceful hill, provides 35 freestanding suites inspired by Balinese traditional hut houses with a subtle twist: a series of inwardcurving shapes presented as a way to harmonize the seaside resort with its surroundings. Each

suite features a large bedroom with canopied, king-size bed, and a spacious bathroom. The stylishly casual suites are divided into two sections: deep-soaking tub and a cosy divan face across from each other. Separate showers with indoor and outdoor entrances are located next to the bathtub. All suites come with a spacious outdoor terrace furnished with a large, creamcoloured daybed fitted with bolsters and pillows. Nine of the suites, including the two-bedroom Amankila Suites, are equipped with private pools. The Aman Resorts Group pride themselves on providing truly superb facilities and amenities, so you can rest assured that all of your creature comforts will be well catered to. Amankila’s signature pools are the three blue-tiled pools inspired by Bali’s terraced rice fields, which merge seamlessly with the sea’s horizon and are located in the main building. The resort’s private beach is located only a step away from the pools. Regular evening barbecues and Balinese dance performances are held at the Beach Club. Active couples will appreciate the resort’s various water activities from snorkelling to windsurfing to diving and cruising, as well as game fishing.

honeymoon is all about finding yourself in the middle of nowhere, removed from the stresses of planning a wedding. Gangga Island Resort & Spa is just such a resort, far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Even getting to the resort is an experience. You and your partner will be picked up at Manado International Airport for the hour drive through the beautiful countryside of North Sulawesi before arriving on a pier, where a spacious boat will whisk you across the strait to Gangga Island. Once on the island, friendly and professional staff will welcome you and guide you to one of the resort’s 15 wooden bungalows built on stilts over the water, with high ceilings and verandas overlooking the white sand beach. Each bungalow has two rooms designed in the local Minahasa style, with a tropical garden surrounding the base of a jungle-covered hill. Every room is equipped with air conditioning and a ceiling fan, mosquito netting, satellite TV, inroom telephone, mini-bar and bathroom with hot and cold shower.
The resort is wildly popular with divers as it is an ideal base for diving sites such as Bangka Island, Bunaken National Marine Park and Lembeh Strait. However, there is no shortage of fun activities for non-diving couples. The highlight, the true gem of the resort, is the stretch of white sand beach just steps from the bungalows that is truly unlike anything you have seen before. Much less-known than popular tourist spots like Bali and Lombok, this stretch of pristine beach is par for the course when it comes to breathtaking secluded beaches in Indonesia. There are plenty of other attractions such as the large salt-water pool and Pasung Spa. The spa’s ambience is elegant yet warm and intimate, and treatments emphasise local philosophies and modern techniques. Rare treatments are derived from the culture of the Minahasa families on the island, while reflexology and traditional Balinese massage are on the menu as well and equally as delicious. Essential oils made from the extracts of plants, flowers and leaves are exclusively ordered and used in the treatments to maintain the balance of mind, body and spirit.

T
he term honeymoon was coined because the first month of marriage is the sweetest. The idea of a honeymoon started from an understanding that newlyweds need some intimate time together, to recover, relax and bond after the wedding preparations. Located in Ubud, the artistic and cultural centre of Bali, Komaneka at Tanggayuda was ranked the number 1 Romantic Hotel in Indonesia 2014 by Trip Advisor and was in Brides magazine’s 50 Sexiest Hotels 2008. Komaneka at Tanggayuda is a destination where newlyweds can relax and savour what should be the best holiday of their lives. For those who appreciate art and culture, Ubud is the ideal location to explore traditional Balinese life and the natural beauty of the island. But this is a honeymoon and couples will want to spend as much time as possible in the spacious, luxurious and secluded Premiere Pool Villa of Komaneka at Tanggayuda. The resort’s private villas, with swimming pool, are artistically arranged overlooking the Oos River. There is a fun selection of activities for newlyweds during their stay at Komaneka. Begin with a cultural visit to the Neka Art Museum, home to a vast collection of Balinese and Indonesian art dating back to the 1930s. Other activities for couples who want to experience traditional Balinese life include dance lessons, coconut leaf craft
making and learning how to wear traditional Balinese attire. For those who enjoy cooking, the resort’s executive chef will be happy to share some of his secret techniques for making fabulous Balinese dishes. Sightseeing around Ubud is another fun option. Newlyweds can go trekking, with three different routes through Ubud’s ravines and forests, or they can join a halfday or full-day sightseeing tour to enjoy the natural beauty of Bali. A honeymoon is the perfect time to pamper and rejuvenate your body with natural spa treatments that date back centuries, when they were the province of princes and princesses. Start with an aromatherapy massage to soothe your muscles and invigorate the senses, followed by a traditional body scrub, a skin-softening elixir that will naturally exfoliate and deepcleanse rough and dry skin. Then end the perfect experience with an aromatic herbal bath to ease your stress and stimulate blood circulation.

ocated in the middle of the Karimunjawa archipelago, north of Java, and offering one of the largest lagoons in the area, Menjawakan is a very green, private tropical island that is exclusively occupied by Kura Kura Resort. Situated between Java and Borneo, and still unknown to mass tourism, Karimunjawa archipelago is a national marine park comprising 27 islands that offer the feeling of natural and remote beauty. Kura Kura Resort re-opened its doors in June 2008 with a new ownership team and new management after seven months of renovations that enhanced the natural beauty of the island and upgraded the property with a passion for authenticity and attention to the smallest detail. The resort features 21 spacious and luxurious Pool Villas that measure 320 square metres, and two family Pool Villas
(600 square metres) nestled amongst the beautiful royal palm trees. Every Pool Villa has been designed with full respect for nature and blends traditional Indonesian touches with contemporary and elegant style. Pool Villas were not only designed and built with the utmost attention to detail, but are also environmentally friendly. The amazing lobby and restaurant were re-built in full and opened in the summer of 2009, welcoming guests with an elegant atmosphere that mixes contemporary style and traditional touches. The restaurant specialises in local seafood – freshly caught lobster, prawns and fish bought directly from the fishing boats each morning. Guests can choose to dine inside the intimate restaurant, on the patio or in the romantic setting around the pool. The resort’s highly qualified dive instructors have discovered several excellent dive sites in the crystalline waters around the islands. There are fringing reefs, atolls and many wrecks, and a fantastic variety of underwater species, some of them rare, such as the Crocodile fish and Leafy Scorpion fish. It is an experience beyond the ordinary.

ucked away in a quiet cove on Lembeh Island in North Sulawesi, Lembeh Resort boasts breathtaking views of the strait especially at sunset. This beautiful, boutique-style resort is another of Indonesia’s numerous hidden resorts which features lush tropical gardens that blend in perfectly with the surrounding landscape. Honeymooning couples can choose their accomodation preference: traditional Minahasan or modern cliffside cottage style, which are both very spacious with open-air Balinese-style bathrooms and verandas.
52
The Traditional Minahasan cottages are stand-alone units which are located along the front resort gardens, which are directly behind the waterline. Built from wood in the traditional style of the local Minahasan culture, these cottages offer guests beautiful sea and sunset views over Mount Klabat and other volcanoes. While the modern Cliffside Cottages are located high above the rest of the resort, the traditional Minahasan cottages are located on the opposite side of a small bay in the heart of the property.
The location requires walking up stairs, but guests staying in these cottages will have the privilege of the uninterrupted 180-degree views over the Lembeh Strait from their private balcony, which is well worth the walk. The Restaurant & Bar is centrally located on the upper level of the main building, and is open from 7 am until 10:30 pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will be accompanied by beautiful views while dining in this area.
Indonesian BBQ nights are regularly held for guests to enjoy delicious satays and Indonesian dishes while being serenaded by the local Sunday school choir (one of the resort’s attractions which you simply won’t find anywhere else). The new poolside bar is one of the best spots to enjoy the view over Lembeh Strait while watching the sunset or stargazing after dinner while sipping a refreshing cocktail, wine or a cold local Bintang beer.

omance for many unfolds around nature, the whispers of the inner and the outer world, framed by a setting that allows you to climb to the top of the stairs and shout “yes”. Whether you wish to fall in love for the weekend or have been involved for years, the Tugu Lombok will put you under its spell and softly wrap you in an experience of romance and luxury, allowing you to relax in the magic and savour every moment. Hotel Tugu Lombok stands as a monument to the forgotten history, art and romance of ancient kingdoms, while at the same time providing modern tropical luxury unlike any other resort. Hotel Tugu Lombok features hundreds of original artworks and antiques painstakingly collected and assembled as a loving testament to the long-forgotten original culture of Lombok. All 35 guest accommodations at Hotel Tugu Lombok are housed in traditional buildings, and are just steps from the beach. One of the most romantic ways to start the day is a private floating breakfast for two on the legendary Naga Mesem boat. This ornate dragon boat is crafted in honour of the legend of the Sea Dragon King, who was awakened from his sleep by the songs of the Wind God. You can sail out at daybreak, silhouetted by the sunrise shadows dancing off Mount Rinjani and take a leisurely sail

Lara Djonggrang Bar is a traditional hut with hundred-year-old thick wooden benches and tables, a long teak bar, oil lamps, semi-open bamboo windows and beautiful pieces of art. Guests can also arrange romantic dinners on the beach and Moonlight Spa Retreat — the setting is entirely up to you, on the sand or a Bamboo Bed with the open sky above you, serenaded by the waves and surrounded by hundreds of candles. Hening Swarga Spa is an open-air temple dedicated to the art of pampering, with nooks lit by oil lamps and a giant Jacuzzi bathtub, all looking out on the azure waters of the Lombok Strait. H
otel Tugu Malang is a must-see destination by itself. Located right at the heart of the old city centre, it is an elegant mansion that tells the romantic stories of the island of Java. The proprietors’ collection of hundreds and hundreds of antiques tastefully adorn every corner of the hotel, walking guests through the heritage of the Dutch colonial era, the gradual fusion of Indonesian and Chinese cultures over many centuries, and the humble beauty of traditional Indonesian masterpieces. The perfect place to spend your honeymoon is Apsara Residence. Once upon a time in Java, there was a romantic legend of a handsome young prince who prayed for a beautiful princess to be his wife. The gods answered his prayers and sent the most beautiful Apsara dancer from Nirvana (Apsaras were the dancers of gods, kings and knights). She flew down and danced at the prince’s royal chamber over three consecutive full moons, and by the end of the third full moon she realized she had fallen in love with the prince. This 200-square-metre residence is inspired by the prince’s chamber where Apsara danced under the moonlight. It consists of a private spa, the Hall of Dancers, an antique canopy with a large outdoor tub, a separate romantic dining area and a spacious sleeping suite with a beautiful antique 3.5-meter-wide bed. Or you can stay at the Honey Moonlight Suite. Located on the third floor this suite faces the Jan Pieterszoon Coen Plein, the main square (alun-alun) in front of the city hall, with a large lotus pond and the historical Tugu monument in the middle of the square. This suite features a romantic outdoor area, the perfect spot for a candlelit dinner under the stars, facing the alun-alun. After your wedding day, it is time to relax and be pampered with a visit to Apsara Spa. The atmosphere of Apsara Spa is inspired by romantic tales of the relationship between Indonesia and Cambodia hundreds of years ago, while the treatments are inspired by the serene, heavenly beauty of the Apsara goddess dancers. Apsara Spa is an oasis of peace, a heaven on earth, secluded from the outside world.

Honey, It’s You!!
The only thing better than a perfect wedding is a perfect honeymoon, but they do not just happen; they have to be carefully planned. Preparing for your first holiday together as husband and wife need not be a stressful affair. We’ll show you how. Text and stylist: Melani Semuel | Photographer: Ricky Salim of Ricky and Co. Plan early
You will want to start your honeymoon planning as early as possible. You do not want to have your heart set on a destination only to find out at the last minute that all flights are full or the accommodation of your choice is booked out. That can happen. Excursions that are unique to your honeymoon locale can sell out and popular restaurants can get booked up, so make all of your arrangements around the same time you reserve a hotel room. Giving yourself plenty of prep time also limits the stress as you become increasingly busy with your wedding preparations. It is also more likely you will enjoy the research and planning process if you pad it with plenty of time in between, rather than viewing it as something you just want to get over and done with.
Compromise
Sit down as a couple and discuss your idea of the perfect vacation. Make a wish list of things that matter most to both of you. With hundreds and thousands of countries, regions, cities and holiday activities to choose from, it’s easy to get distracted and not be able to come to a decision. The easiest way to eliminate options is to set a budget for your trip. Any destination that is too expensive to fly to or where accommodation may be too expensive automatically falls off the list. Consider what kind of honeymoon you’d like to have. Do you imagine sunbathing at a beach resort, an adventure holiday or cultural and historic sightseeing in a city? Be considerate of your spouse’s wishes. Marriage is going to call for lots of compromise and this is the place to start. Consider the weather and peak/low seasons Another way to eliminate options from your wish list is to check the weather at places you have in mind. If you are travelling to a beach resort, you will want to avoid the monsoon season. Similarly, you will want
94
Man’s beige pants and women’s mini pink dress by BIASA
to check that your honeymoon destination isn’t prone to extreme weather during the time you plan to visit. You do not want to risk your honeymoon getting washed out. Pay attention as well to peak and low seasons at places you have short-listed. Generally, low season means lower prices and fewer crowds, while high season brings with it tourist hordes and peak prices at hotels and attractions.
Seek help from an expert
If your trip involves several cities, connecting flights and plenty of activities, don’t kill yourself by trying to plan everything on your own. The internet has made it easy to take on all aspects of planning, but travel agents can make things easier and they don’t cost a cent.
Stay at least three nights in each place If your honeymoon involves several cities/ countries, it is a good idea to stay at least three nights in each destination. This will give you enough time to settle in, relax and see some sights. The last thing you want is to be rushed on your honeymoon.
Relax and enjoy
After all the tension and stress of preparing for your wedding, you will want to relax and enjoy this time together. Avoid arranging too many activities on your honeymoon. Enjoy poolside brunches or evening cocktails by the beach. It is also a good idea to make time for some spa sessions during your honeymoon, so you can relax and pamper yourself with indulgent treatments. Ask for the spa menu when you book your accommodation and book your spa appointment as soon as you can. And don’t forget to schedule time to do
nothing at all. While it’s great to have plenty of options in terms of things to see and do, this is, after all, a honeymoon.
Announce it’s your honeymoon
If you decide to take on all aspects of the honeymoon planning, remember to tell the world it’s your honeymoon! Divulging this precious fact to the hotels you are staying at, restaurants you are dining at and any place you visit can reap plenty of benefits, such as complimentary upgrades, free activities and, if nothing else, extra pleasant service. Pack a copy of your marriage certificate just in case you are asked to prove it. Remember, this is the start of your new life as husband and wife, so follow these tips to make your honeymoon memorable for all the right reasons.
