La Vita è Bella One of the things I like most about my job is having the chance to stay at some of the world’s best resorts and hotels. I love staying in hotels. I love to indulge myself and be pampered. I love to experience something new and exciting.

Contrary to what some people might think, it does not have to be fancy to impress me. I am not the type of person who is automatically impressed by an expensive rate. I’ve stayed in some expensive hotels that left me cold and then had some great experiences in better priced places. In fact, one of my most memorable getaways was in a resort in the middle of a forest on an out of no way island. We would stumble our way back to our villa at night in the pitch-black jungle with a torch in our hands, and I love (although I didn’t realise it then) the fact that there was no telephone signal and no wifi. What I love are fresh ideas, unique concepts, and something out of the ordinary. The last thing I want is to stay in some boring accommodation just for the sake of a brand or an expensive rate. However, having done this for more than fourteen years, I realise that I am getting harder to impress. Having stayed in so many great places and experienced so many wonderful things, it’s hard for me to be dazzled. Sometimes it feels like “been there done that, take me to the next hotel.” I was starting to think that nothing could really impress me anymore. Boy, was I wrong? A recent trip to Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya simply blew me away. The stay at this hotel is memorable, I loved the attention to details and the service fit for royalty they offer their guests.

In this edition, my team and I had so much fun indulging in Five-Star Pleasures. I have asked some of our team to compile our favourite travel moments and we featured it in the “Editor’s Pick.” We travelled around to uncover some of the best hotels and resorts just for you. We have found the best hotels “Where Sunrises and Sunsets Meet”, Comfort does not always connote luxury, we take you out of your comfort zone and “Into the Wild”. With school holidays around the corner, we looked for “Best Family-Friendly Hotels” that will give every member of the family, a time of their life. Five-Star Pleasure is not just about staying in a hotel, but it is also about discovering beautiful and exciting destinations. Like, a journey to one of the most dramatic natural spectacles on the planet, Iceland: “The Land of Fire and Ice, “ and uncovering the exoticism of “Angkor Wat, The Temple City, ” read about my journey as I was captivated by the beauty of the Lake Toba region in “Monaco of Asia.”

I hope you have as much fun reading the magazine as we had preparing it for you. And I hope it can inspire you to live your life to the max. Happy holiday,

Melani Semuel

RETROMANTIC by Fetty Rusli InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar collaborated with talented young designer, Fetty Rusli, to successfully hold a Wedding Showcase event titled “RETROMANTIC by Fetty Rusli.” The concept is inspired by the fashionable era of the 80s; the year of Fetty’ birth. The 80s was all about bold fashion statements and in these collections, Fetty combines it with her signature style, renewed with an edgier look to suit the current era. She simply materialised the present from the past. RETROMANTIC was filled with fashion shows that displayed the beautiful works of Fetty Rusli, who had just successfully held the same event in Paris and Jakarta. Before the fashion show started, the guest enjoyed the InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar wedding’s signature dishes while making their mark by posing on the RETROMANTIC wall-of-fame. The fashion show started with a magnificent opening, combination of great lighting works and mesmerising visual effect on the giant LED screen featuring a classic image building architecture and charming natural scenery just like those in Paris. All the models elegantly strode the catwalk to show the collections. In total there were about 30 designs that night on the catwalk, from Wedding Dresses to Cocktail Gowns. Fetty mostly uses elegant colours with hues of nude, gold-ish, white and black. The event received many positive comments from the guests and was really such a night to remember.

The fire comes from the ferocious powers of nature ubiquitous there. It is home to abundant volcanoes that periodically burst into life. These hot elemental forces are located just below the surface of the earth across the land, heating Iceland’s tap water and swimming pools, and creating out-of-this-earth landscapes of twisted lava and rainbow coloured mineral sands. Ice in Iceland is another major nature attraction, the dramatic glaciers which slice down and float towards the coasts, calving icebergs into eerie lagoons. Glacier tours by snowmobile, on foot, or on the back of tiny Icelandic pony, are an integral part of Iceland experience. Another big attraction here is the Aurora Borealis, more commonly referred to as “the Northern Lights,” a natural phenomenon formed by particles emitted by the sun during solar flares, causing peculiar luminous green streaks across the skies when interacting with the atmosphere in the earth’s magnetic field. There are many things to do in Iceland from hiking and running, cycling, caving, ice climbing, swimming in a nature-heated pool, spas, riding an Icelandic horse, whale watching, birdwatching to helicopter tours and northern lights hunting. Reykjavik

Reykjavik, on the coast of Iceland, is the country’s capital and largest city. It is home to an impressive collection of exhilarating attractions and places of historical significance. With a population of 120,000 people, Reykjavik is probably not a whirlwind metropolis. Several skyscrapers grace

28

the skyline, traffic jams are notably rare, and faces are familiar. But don’t be deceived, a steady beat of energy and events keeps the city alive and pulsing with excitement. The quirky nature of the Icelandic people is what lures many people back to this land for a second or third visit. Eccentric, creative and fiercely independent, the Icelanders are simply a lot of fun to be around, particularly during the endless days of summer. Sunny days feel like spontaneous holidays in Reykjavik, sunbathers and picnickers fill Austurvollur, the green square in front of the Parliament. Locals and tourists alike stroll up and down Laugavegur, the main drag, shopping, stopping for coffee, and people everywhere one turns. Thirsty jockey for sparse outdoor seating at bars and happy hours rolls around. Crooning buskers line the sidewalk, performance artists stage surprise acts, and marching bands seem to pop out from corners. The Hallgrimskirkja Church is the city’s main landmark, and its tower is visible from almost everywhere in the city. The church features most notably, a gargantuan pipe organ designed and constructed by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn. Standing tall at an impressive 15 metres and weighing a remarkable 25 tons, this mechanical action organ is driven by four manuals and a pedal, 102 ranks, 72 stops and 5275 pipes, all designed to reproduce powerful notes capable of filling the huge and holy space with a range of tones – from the dulcet to the dramatic. Standing directly in front of the church, and predating it by 15 years, is a fine statue of Leifur Eiriksson – the first European to discover America. Apart from it being a beautiful place to walk with stunning views across the bay to Mount Esja, the Old Harbour area is where the majority of marine activities, such as whale watching and puffin tours

clustered; it is also where you find Vikin Maritime Museum and the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina. There are numerous new and interesting businesses springing up, offering everything from scooter rides to the city’s best dark-roasted coffee, including the impressive addition of Harpa – the city’s award-winning new concert hall. Harpa easily is one of Reykjavik’s greatest and distinguished landmarks. It is a cultural and social centre in the heart of the city and features stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the North Atlantic Ocean. Offering the best facilities for concerts and conferences, Harpa has

received numerous awards and prizes, thanks to its stunning layout and architecture. The downtown area of Reykjavik (also known by its postal code as 101) is the nucleus of Iceland’s rich culture and arts scene. By day, the cafegoers rule the area, with free wifi and refills on drip coffee being fairly common, a steady hum of conversation keeps the city’s several cafes lively. The locals and tourists mixed, linger until there is a sufficient buzz on the strong, dark elixir. And as the day turns into night, people start filing into many of the cities restaurants. 101, playful murals and street art testify to the city’s sense of creativity and fun. Art galleries; the Reykjavik Art Museum and the National Gallery showcase the works of classic Icelandic artists, while smaller independent galleries display the projects of cutting-edge, contemporary Icelandic and international artists. Various museums preserve the culture and history of both the city and the country at large. Designated as a UNESCO City of Literature, Reykjavik is also the core of Iceland’s literary heritage where you will discover a treasure of literary works and a wealth of talented poets and authors.

The next stop is Gullfoss, or famously known as the “Golden Waterfall.” It is Iceland’s most famous waterfall, and one of the natural wonders of the world. Gullfoss is also by far Europe’s most powerful waterfall. On a sunny day, the mist clouds surrounding the hammering falls are filled with dozens of rainbows, providing an unparalleled spectacle of colour and motion. Located in the mighty glacial river Hvita (White River), the enormous white glacial cascade drops 32 metres into a narrow canyon which is 70 metres deep and 2.5 kilometres long. In winter, it has an unusual appearance when ice and snow garb the entire sphere.

The Golden Circle

Just a few kilometres from Gullfoss, is another natural wonder, the world-famous Geysir which gives its name to hot springs all over the world. Though Geysir itself is hardly active anymore, the area features spectacular hot springs such as the powerful Strokkur, which spouts a vast amount of water to 15-20 metres into the air every 10 minutes. Meanwhile in the north of Geysir are fumaroles, unlike the Hotsprings that emit hot water, only stea, and gas emanate from these. About two kilometres from Geysir is an old preserved natural pool called Kualaug. One can bathe in it, and it has room for 3-5 people at a time, but care should be taken, as the area around the pool is very delicate. The temperature is 39-43 C, depending on how you are positioned in the pool. The water is slightly muddy, as the pool is built on soil, and the bottom is slippery due to algae, so caution is advised.

If you make only one foray outside Reykjavik, take this popular route. Offered by many tour operators, The Golden Circle consists of the Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot springs, and Thingvellir national park, all of which are famous in their own way but can easily be enjoyed in the course of one day, making for an ideal day tour. Usually, the first stop on the tour is Kerio, an explosion crater located 15-kilometre northeast from the town of Selfoss beside the road leading to Geysir. The water-filled crater is 55 metre deep and some 3,000 years old. The greenish colour of the water and the circular steep slopes create an eerie view certainly worthwhile stopping to admire. Owing to its natural amphitheatre form and excellent acoustics, a concert was once held at the crater.

The last stop is the Thingvellir National Park which sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagja fault. Not only does it serve as a National Park, but Thingvellir is also s a historic site, known for the Althing, the site of Iceland’s parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. On the site are the Thingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters. Thingvellir is one of the most frequently visited tourist sites in the country and known as Iceland’s greatest historical site and the jewel of nature. The Northern Lights

As we have mentioned earlier, the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) is a natural phenomenon which looks like the lights are cascading around the sky, dancing if you will, and it is unquestionably a pretty and spectacular sight. Recently, the Northern Lights comes on the top of the list of things most visitors in Iceland would like to experience, although it is not a walk in the park to experience this stunning natural phenomenon. There are several factors that you have to keep in mind if you want to experience it. First is to know the season, the official Aurora season in Iceland is from September until mid-April, but like with so many other things that have to do with Icelandic nature, it is not something you can say with any certainty. For example, sometimes, the first Northern Lights of the season in Reykjavik the year were seen around the middle of August. Second

is the light condition, the suitable conditions to see the Aurora is when it is cold and dark outside, so Aurora spotting is best to do at night time. It is also a fall, winter or early spring activity since during summer months it is pretty much bright all the time. The third is the sky condition; it has to be clear. Unfortunately, Reykjavik is usually cloudy and full of lights at night time, so it is a good idea also to hunt for this mystic green lights outside the town. There are many great small towns to visit around Iceland with beautiful country hotels and guesthouses, just steps from pure un-modernized nature where there is no light pollution. The last but not least to consider is the length of stay. It is recommended to stay for a minimum seven nights; the Aurora usually tend to be very active for two to three nights, then low for four to five nights, in ongoing cycles. On clear winter nights, sightseeing trips are often organized around this remarkable natural phenomenon. The ideal location for sightings varies, and excursion leaders are skilled in “hunting” the lights, finding locations where conditions are best for seeing them on any given night. Shaped by the unrelenting forces of nature, Iceland’s harsh natural environment has bred a resilient nation that has learned to exist under extreme conditions and harness the natural resources for its prosperity, luring visitors from all around the globe to come flocking to its wilderness parks and dramatic landscapes.

H

ave you ever seen the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider? It is about a fearless woman who loves adventure. The movie with great sets, shows the lead role, Lara, fearlessly crisscrossing the globe from England, Venice to Cambodia. That was the first time I knew about Angkor Wat, the exotic temple, deep in the heart of the jungles of Cambodia that is mysterious and captivating.

Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City and also Vientiane to Siem Reap. There are also buses and vans offering services to Siem Reap from neighboring towns. Those who want an extraordinary journey could take the River ferry from Phnom Penh crossing the Tonle Sap River. When you arrive in the city, there are lots of hotels and hostels near the Pub Street, which is a known tourist area for culinary and nightlife.

After seeing the movie, Angkor Wat stuck with me. Several years later I had a chance to explore several countries in South-East Asia, including Cambodia. I took a road trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Cambodia, a gateway to the ruins of Angkor Wat. The temple’s vast complex of intricate stone buildings including the preserved Angkor Wat, the main temple, is pictured on Cambodia’s national flag.

Exploring Angkor Wat complex is fascinating but could be challenging. The hot and humid weather could go up to 40-45°C, and that can drain your energy. You can rent a mountain bike or a motorcycle while exploring the complex. Alternatively, you can rent a tuk-tuk (traditional rickshaw), which is more fun but costs more. To reduce the cost you can share the tuk-tuk ride with other explorers. Or if your budget allows, you could rent a private car.

Why is Angkor Wat so unique and why does everyone want to go there? The answer is simple (it’s beauty), but first, let me dissect this sacred temple to you.

Visiting the Angkor Wat is possible any time of the year, but the peak season is from November to February when the weather is dryer and cool.

Story Behind Angkor Wat

Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. Angkor Wat is the main temple inside the Angkor complex. Built between A.D. 1113 and 1150, it is one of the largest religious monuments ever constructed. Its name means City Temple. Originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu, it was later converted into a Buddhist temple in the 14th century, and statues of Buddha were added to its already rich artwork. Its 213-foot-tall (65 meters) central tower is surrounded by four smaller towers and a series of enclosed walls, a layout that recreates the image of Mount Meru, a legendary place in Hindu mythology that is said to lie beyond the Himalayas and believed to be the home of the gods. After 1432 the capital of this kingdom moved to Phnom Penh (now the capital city of Cambodia), Angkor Wat was cared for by the Buddhist monks that remained. How to Get Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, located near Siem Reap, is the second largest city in Cambodia after Phnom Penh. There are regular flights from Phnom Penh, Bangkok,

34

MAXX-M

Witnessing the sunrise over the temple is something you cannot afford to miss. You will need to arrive there before sunrise, around 5.00 am, and stay until lunch time. Then rest for a couple of hours before continuing the journey in the afternoon. It takes about 4 hours to explore just the Angkor Wat. You will need about half a day to explore the alleys and absorb the intrigue in every carving detail around the temple (excluding the Bayon Temple and Ta Phrom). The complex is full of temples, so it’s better to spend at least three days if you are curious about the remains of the Khmer kingdom. Many Faces in Bayon Temple

Angkor Wat may be the top priority when inside the complex, but there are two other temples that display beautifully carving and architecture. One is the Bayon Temple that is about a 15 minutes tuk-tuk ride from Angkor Wat. This temple reminds me of the beautiful temples in the Java islands of Indonesia; similar in architecture and building material. The Bayon temple was built in the late 12th or early 13th century A.D. by Jayavarman VII, one of the Khmer Empire’s greatest kings. It served as the state temple of Jayavarman’s new capital, Angkor

Thom. Bayon Temple is unique because it is the only state temple built primarily as a Mahayana Buddhist shrine dedicated to the Buddha. After the death of Jayavarman, the features of the Bayon Temple were altered according to the religious belief of his successors, thus containing Hindu and Theravada Buddhist elements that were not part of the temple’s original plans. Bayon Temple displays over 200 gigantic stone faces. These faces dubbed the ‘Mona Lisa of South East Asia’ came in sets of fours, each identical, and pointing to a cardinal direction. The location of the faces symbolizes the omnipresence of the person whose face is being depicted. The statues depict the face of the Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. This is supported by the features of the face, in particular, the closed eyes and mysterious smile, which represent the achievement of the state of Enlightenment. Some people argued that the faces depicted Jayavarman himself, as they bear an uncanny resemblance to other images of the king. It is also possible that the statues were meant to depict Jayavarman and the Avalokitesvara simultaneously, thus allowing the king to take on the attributes of the bodhisattva. However, the facts about the temple describe the beauty of Khmer kingdom. For a better insight, you will need a travel guide to assist you because there are lots of stories behind the walls. The Ruins of Ta Phrom The last stop before ending your journey at Angkor Wat complex is a visit to Ta Phrom. The location is farther away from the Angkor Wat and

36

Bayon Temples, but this is the final stop among these unique and exotic temples. If you have seen the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Rider, the temple will grasp your attention through the great trees that tower above Ta Phrom, the sunlight filtering through their leaves, that provides a welcoming shade and casting a greenish light beyond the site. Lichens, mosses and other creeping plants sprout along the delicately carved reliefs on the walls. Constructions on Ta Prohm began in 1186 AD. Originally known as Rajavihara (Monastery of the King), Ta Prohm was a Buddhist temple dedicated to the mother of King Jayavarman VII. A rare inscription at Ta Prohm provides statistics on the temple’s workers. Allowing for some exaggeration to honor the king, the inscription reports of around 80,000 workers, including 2,700 officials and 615 dancers, is still astounding. Sadly, Ta Prohm was looted heavily in recent years due to its relative isolation, and many of its ancient stone reliquaries lost. Ta Prohm is extensively ruined, but you can still explore its towers, closed courtyards, and narrow corridors. Ta Phrom is fascinating to explore. It will take almost two hours if you are curious to explore the corridors and see more of the iconic tree roots. The most popular of the many breath-taking root formations is on the inside of the easternmost gopura (entrance pavilion) of the central enclosure, nicknamed the Crocodile Tree. Some of the roots look incredibly stunning and are unusually shaped. Ta Phrom looks lusher than the other shrines perhaps because of the many overgrown trees around the area.

Inside Angkor Wat, there are a lot of temples. These are few temples to visit while around the complex: •

Angkor Thom Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, was a fortified city enclosing residences of priests, officials of the palace and military, as well as buildings for the administration of the kingdom.

Banteay Samre The temple is worth the extra effort to experience the elaborate architecture, and fine carvings, although thieves have damaged many of the temple’s treasures.

Baphuon Baphuon is a single sanctuary temple-mountain situated on a high base. It is a symbolical representation of Mount Meru.

Preah Khan The temple was built in the second half of the 12th century in AD 1191 by King Jayavarman VII, dedicating it to his father, Dharanindravarman.

Preah Palilay Built in the middle to the last half of the 12th century, by King Jayavarman VII, this temple is dedicated to the Buddhist and art style of Angkor Wat.

towering mountains stand out against a dazzling blue sky, creating the perfect backdrop for green foothills and picturesque Lake Toba. Lake Toba has been part of traveller folklore for decades. It is the largest lake in Indonesia, the second-largest in the world after Lake Victoria in Africa, and the largest volcanic lake in the world. Lake Toba is also the deepest lake in the world, which is approximately 450 meters deep. We were so mesmerized by the beauty that we asked our driver to stop in one of the local cafés along the road. It was around sunset, and we didn’t want to miss it. We sat there soaking in the beauty, watching the beautiful colour of the sky before finally, the sun set into the lake.

I

know what some of you are thinking when you saw the title of this article. To be very honest, I was thinking the same way when I first heard a person refer to Lake Toba region in North Sumatra as the “Monaco of Asia.” Little did I know, our journey to Lake Toba would turn out to be one of (if not) the most memorable and beautiful journey I have ever had. Our journey started the moment our Siantar Express train that took us from Medan arrived in Pemantang Siantar. We continued our journey by car. The car took us on a winding road along pine forests, and suddenly we were stricken by the most beautiful view of Lake Toba and the surrounding mountains. The once very noisy car was silent as the view has left us speechless. The

I am not a morning person, but we were so captivated by the beautiful scenery that my friend and I woke up early the next morning eager to explore more of the lake. We walked out of the hotel and before us, was the celebrated lake, with its glittering surface and undulating shoreline. We went straight down to the lake, it was so calm and we could see towns surrounding the lake. I could not believe it; here I was in Lake Toba.

Parapat

Parapat is a small town on the shores of Lake Toba that is blessed by this beautiful scenery where you are pampered with magnificent and soul-soothing natural views of the expansive but calm lake. There are many ways to reach Parapat, other than taking the 3-hour train journey from Medan like we did, you can take a scenic five-hour

3600

drive there. Or you can also land at Silangit airport, then continue on a two-hour drive to Lake Toba. Trust me every minute of the drive is worth it, the view along the way is simply breath-taking. The best way to explore Parapat is on foot and in the morning, when locals are starting their daily routine. We took a stroll along the lakeshore. Just opposite the hotel where we stayed is a street lined with souvenir shops that sell clothes, accessories and ulos (the traditional cloth of the ‘Batak’ people of North Sumatra). As we continued our walk, we came across an old building that sits on the tip of the peninsula on very steep cliffs. The building is the silent witness to the long history of the struggle of Indonesia. This is where the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, President Soekarno was exiled. This building was built in 1820. The neoclassical architectural style is really materialized in the building, and it adds to the beauty of Parapat City. This building offers a perfect view of Lake Toba. We came across the local people doing their morning routine, from children going to school to fishermen readying their nets. We then came across a busy traditional market nearby a small harbour. We stopped by at one of the traditional coffee shops and enjoyed the all-famous traditional drink, teh tarik together with a kaya toast. I love this city; the architecture is unique and the old buildings beautiful. Parapat and its surrounding have some of the most beautiful sceneries I have ever seen. I have to say that Lake Toba region is blessed with the most beautiful natural scenery, the rich tradition that this region has is very interesting, and

the food is simply delicious. Durian lovers would love coming here, as you can find durian easily, it tastes good and the price is very reasonable. As we were driving along exploring the region, one of my friends who lived most of his life in Europe said, “This place reminds me of home.” At that moment I realised the extent of the beauty that Lake Toba region are comparable to some destinations overseas, if not better. I know for some of you it might be hard to believe it. I admit that I didn’t believe until I went and saw it with my own eyes.

Bukit Doa

There are many places that are beautiful here, but you must visit Bukit Doa. A few hours’ drive from Parapat , Bukit Doa is located 1550 meters above sea level. It has become one of the best attractions in North Sumatra and a landmark of the Muara District. Once you reach the location, you will see an iconic monument, in the shape of praying hands. There you can see a postcard perfect view of Lake Toba and the surroundings. The weather can be very cold so make sure you bring some warm clothing. There are small ‘warungs’ (local stalls) around so you can have a warm cup of tea while enjoying the scenery. It has a serene and peaceful ambience, while I was admiring the beautiful landscape; I heard our guide say to our driver, “do you realize how amazing God is? When you look at this scenery everything is so perfect. He has placed everything so beautifully perfect that none, not even the cleverest painter can do a better job than this.” I could not agree more. Five-Star Pleasures

Samosir Island

While in Parapat you have to go to Samosir Island. It takes 45 minutes by ferry to cross from Parapat to Samosir, but the ferry is not available every hour. You can also take a speedboat to the island. We were up for some adventure so we decided to drive along Lake Toba to Samosir Island. The journey itself took around 7 hours, but it was worth every single minute of it. It is a good idea to bring along some snack and water with you. There are a lot of beautiful spots located along the way such as Menara Tele (Tele tower), air terjun Sipiso Piso (Sipiso piso waterfall), but the truth is the view along the way is so beautiful that we just had to take some stops along the way for pictures of the stunning views. The roads are winding but the streets are quite empty, sometimes it took us almost an hour to see another vehicle. Luckily for us, we found a very simple wooden warung on top of a hill that sells durian. We parked the car and enjoyed the best durian ever. After driving for about four hours from Parapat, we arrived at the stunning Sipiso-piso Waterfall. This long but narrow waterfall drops 120 meters

42

into an impressive gorge below, it is said to be one of the highest waterfalls in Indonesia. This thundering waterfall is popular with guests who come to photograph this magnificent natural wonder. Surrounded by a lush green mountains cape and with a rainbow forming at the base of the waterfall, it’s hard to imagine a more impressive subject for a photograph. Our next stop was the Menara Pandang Tele (Tele Tower). It was built in 1988 and has 4 different levels. The highest level is the favourite place for a better view of the landscape. As we climbed up to the highest level, we couldn’t stop ooooh and aaaah-ing at the majestic scenery. Everywhere you turn takes your breath away. Tele Tower features many beautiful views aside from the lake; it offers stunning rice fields and the Pusuk Buhit Mountain. I know that I have said it many times before but ever since I arrived at Parapat, every where I turned was nothing but a breathtaking scenery. Simply enjoy the beauty, the culture and the peace of North Sumatra, soak in the beauty of “The Monaco of Asia.”

Places you have to visit in Samosir Island King Sidabutar Tomb The Batak king who embrassed Christianity, is buried in Tomok village, five kilometers southeast of Tuk Tuk. The king’s image is carved on his tombstone, along with those of his bodyguards and Anteng Melila Senega, the woman the king is said to have loved for many years without fulfilment. The tomb is also decorated with carvings of Singa (mythical creatures with grotesque three-horned heads and bulging eyes). Next to the king’s tomb is the tomb of the missionary who converted the tribe in the 19th century and an older Batak royal tomb, which souvenir vendors say is used as a multilingual fertility shrine for childless couples. Si Gale-Gale Sigale Gale or Si Gale-Gale is a wooden puppet used in a funeral dance performance of the Batak people of Samosir Island, Northern Sumatra. Carved from the wood of a banyan tree and dressed in the traditional costume, wearing a red turban, loose shirt and blue sarong, the Sigale-gale stands on

long, wooden boxes where the operator makes it dance to percussion music accompanied by flutes and drums. There are many versions of the story behind Sigalegale. Some believe that the origin of the puppet was linked to a local legend that tells of a childless woman named Nai Manggale. The legend adds that as she lay dying on her deathbed, Nai Manggale asked her husband to have a life-sized image of her made and for it to be called Si Gale-Gale and to have a dirge played in front of the puppet. If this was not done, her spirit would not be admitted to the abode of the dead, which would in turn force her to place a curse on her surviving spouse. Hence, to avert the misfortune, the Sigale-gale was created. Parbaba Beach Located in Hutabolon village, Parbaba beach looks exactly like a beach although it is adjacent to Lake Toba. It looks like a typical shore with white soft sand and waves after waves crashing ashore. The only difference is that it is not an ocean; it is a lake, Lake Toba. The background for the beach is the well-known Pusuk Buhit Mountain. The beautiful scenery makes it a popular place for both tourists and locals alike.

But these other accommodation options are able to take you out of your comfort zone and into the wild. I guess this kind of experience must be one of the things that you should do as you travel. Mango Tree Spa by L’Occitane Mango Tree Spa by L’Occitane at Kupu Kupu Barong Villas and Tree Spa, is just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Ubud. Tree spa rooms, on the top of the mango tree, offer a grand view and matching soundscape of birds, flowing water and soft rustling, and a truly unique experience in Bali. I felt an immediate serene and tranquil atmosphere as I entered my treatment room to get ready for my spa treatment. I looked out the windows and all I saw were the lush tropical gardens overlooking the river and rice paddies. It is a real treat to the eyes, and I heard birds chipping during my treatment. Must Try: The 180 minutes Wings of Love treatment, which is heaven on earth. It begins with a one-hour Aromachologie Relaxing Massage based on Swedish effleurage, Chinese acupressure points and long, kneading Balinese strokes. This heavenly massage experience loosened up my tensed muscles, hitting all the right spots. Then, it was followed by a L’Occitane body scrub, the skilful hands of the therapist working on my entire body, getting rid of dead skin cells, leaving my skin healthy and glowing. Next was a warm, invigorating dip in the L’Occitane Provencal bath followed by a one-hour facial massage using L’Occitane products. The therapist carefully determined my skin type and then suggested the perfect products for my slightly oily skin. The results were dramatic and immediate; my skin felt so much younger, cleaner, and fresh. After three hours of immersing in heavenly pleasures, I was gently woken up by the therapist and escorted back to the real world, presented with a cup of hot tea and a colourful macaroon for a sweet closing to an unforgettable wellness trip. Emirates Introduces New Range of Comforts in First and Business Class

E

mirates has enhanced comfort in the air with a host of exclusive, new products introduced to its First and Business Class cabins. Customers will travel in luxury with new additions including First Class lounge wear, luxury blankets, skincare from VOYA and a new range of amenity kits from Bulgari. Emirates’ ongoing investment in product reinforces its emphasis on comfort, enhancing the travel experience. The airline has partnered with experts in their respective fields and no attention to detail has been spared in the luxury product overhaul.

Sleep Well

For a comfortable night’s sleep on board the aircraft, Emirates has introduced the world’s first moisturising lounge wear designed for an airline. It will be available in the First Class cabin on overnight long haul flights. In partnership with Matrix, the suits use Hydra Active Microcapsule Technology designed to keep skin hydrated during the flight. The patented technology uses billions of capsules applied to the fabric which gently releases naturally-moisturising Sea Kelp during movement. Sea Kelp, a brown sea algae or seaweed normally found in the Antarctic Ocean, is known to be rich in nutrients that hydrate skin while retaining moisture, especially useful in an aircraft environment. The Microcapsule Technology of the lounge wear locks in the moisturiser for up to 10 washes so customers can re-use them. The suits include matching slippers and eye mask and come in a stylish felt pouch. For added comfort, Emirates offers a plush, faux sheep-skin blanket in First Class. The soft and luxurious comforter is on board and also sold at the Emirates Official Store. Business Class customers can also look forward to newly-introduced soft duvets in charcoal grey on their next flight. Wake Up Refreshed

To complete the relaxing travel experience, a new range of luxury spa products are now available both on board and on the ground from award-winning Irish brand VOYA. Created exclusively for Emirates, this skincare line includes shampoo, conditioner, body wash, cleanser, body moisturiser, hand wash, soap and hand cream. It will be available in the signature A380 shower spa on board and selected products in Emirates’ airport lounges. The hand and body cream can also be found in

the First and Business Class washrooms. VOYA’s line of skincare is made from sustainable organic seaweed which has been hand harvested in Sligo, Ireland. The brand is a mainstay in luxury boutique spas worldwide and is now available in the skies on Emirates. Emirates has also partnered with luxury Italian brand Bulgari for its latest designs of the airline’s exclusive kit bags. The new set of amenity kits for both First and Business Class feature Bulgari’s woody floral fragrance – Eau Parfumée au thé noir - and contain skincare essentials to keep customers feeling fresh and pampered throughout the flight. The First Class kit bags, made from fine leather, come in eight designs in charcoal grey for men and pale grey for women. Eight additional designs are available in Business Class – four for men and four for women. The amenity kits are available on long-haul overnight flights. Customers can enjoy gourmet, regionally inspired menus on board, paired with Emirates’ world class wine programme featuring the finest champagnes and wines from around the world. Passengers in all classes can enjoy Emirates’ multi-award winning ‘ice’ Digital Widescreen with more than 2,500 channels of on demand entertainment including movies, TV programs, music and podcasts. Emirates’ premium onboard experience is complemented by on ground comfort with a network of 40 dedicated Emirates Lounges located within major airports around the globe - all designed with the same attention to detail and exceptional service. First and Business Class passengers can also travel to and from the airport via Emirates’ complimentary Chauffeurdrive service. Five-Star Pleasures

It’s in My Bucket List! You know all those things you’ve always wanted to do? You should go do them. There is no denying it, that today we live in a fast-paced world, struggling with work, family and social matters that sometimes we don’t have time for ourselves. All the workloads and pressures often become stressful and can lead to some problems from physical illness to mental breakdown. That’s why, it’s good to once in a while, reduce those stress factors by doing what you love. Convert those to-dos to done, start ticking off all the items on your bucket list of things you want to do in life and come away with lasting memories. As an old saying goes “live life to the fullest because it only happens once.” If you are still open to adding ideas on your list, here are some exciting activities that might be suitable for you. Journey of a Lifetime With the Trans-Siberian Railway, one may just settle back to enjoy the dramatic changes of scenery and savour a choice of Europe’s and Asia’s most superb and splendid landscapes.

A journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s safe, comfortable and offers a magnificent view of three world’s largest countries: Russia, Mongolia, and China. The Trans-Siberian Railway itself is just one part of the massive Russian railway network, transporting passengers and freight safely at affordable prices. It connects the European rail network at one end with either Vladivostok or the Chinese rail network at the other. You can use it to travel over land in either direction between London, Paris or anywhere in Europe and China, Japan, Korea or even Southeast Asia. And yes, the Trans-Siberian is perfectly safe, for families or solo female travellers. It is the way Russian families and women travel, after all. The Trans-Siberian Railway operates all year round, so basically you can go any time of year. But naturally, the summer months from May to September have the best weather and the longest daylight hours, so they are the most popular. In winter it is easier to get tickets, the trains are warmly heated and the Siberian landscape beautiful in the snow, but the hours of daylight will be shorter and stretching your legs at stations or visiting the cities will be chillier. There are so many possibilities of destinations while travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway; it surely doesn’t just

go to Vladivostok. Vladivostok is an interesting place for a day or two if you are passing through before catching the ferry to Japan or Korea, but probably not worth a 7-day journey from Moscow just for its own sake. Beijing is a far better choice of destination as it is an amazing city that is well worth the overland trip from Europe. The TransMongolian probably the most interesting of the three routes, there are superb views of the Gobi desert and a chance to stop off in Mongolia on the way. But why end your trip in Beijing? Shanghai is just a few hours high-speed train ride away. Or how about Japan? There are ferries from Shanghai to Japan and a ferry from Vladivostok to Japan. There is even a twice-weekly direct train from Beijing to Hanoi in Vietnam taking two nights; then you can take daily trans to Saigon, a bus to Phnom Penh and on to Bangkok, then a train to Malaysia and Singapore, continue with ferries to Indonesia. Whatever your choice is, just remember that you can travel the Trans-Siberian Railway either eastbound or westbound, it’s up to you, although westbound tends to be a more popular route with easterners, perhaps because going out by rail from your local station and flying back is more romantic than starting your trip with a flight. Catching Northern Lights One of the most magical places to take in a Northern Light show is in Iceland, a Nordic island nation which is often defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields.

Have you ever, as a kid, dreamt of sleeping under the dancing stars? Well, as an adult it is still on my bucket list of things to do, but only the dancing stars are the famous Northern Lights. If you are not familiar with the term ‘The Northern Lights,’ here is a short explanation. The Northern Lights are the result of electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing displays of bright, colourful dancing lights, ranging from white, green, pink to purple. They are visible in the magnetic polar regions of the northern and southern hemispheres. In the northern hemisphere, the lights are best seen from Iceland, Greenland, northern Norway, Siberia, the Canadian territories and Alaska. And at this moment, it seems that the Northern Lights are one of the biggest attractions for visiting Iceland. However, they are also one of the most elusive and unpredictable attractions the country has. There are lots of variables to consider if you want to see them; season, weather, the length of stay, location, and luck. The best time to see the

Northern Lights in Iceland is from September to mid-April, these are the months where there are full dark nights. The second most important factor is the length of time you choose to stay in the country. For the best odds of seeing the dancing lights, it is recommended to stay a minimum of seven nights. The Northern Lights usually tend to be very active for two to three nights, then low for four to five nights, in ongoing cycles. Checking the weather forecast regularly in the days leading to your trip to Iceland will give you an idea of your chances of seeing the lights - as to see it, the skies need to be very clear. That is also the reason why it is good to avoid the city. Once in a while, the Northern Lights takes Reykjavik the capital city of Iceland by surprise, and they are so strong that the city lights don’t matter, but most of the time, it’s best to get away from all the street lights and car brights. There are many great small towns to visit around Iceland with beautiful country hotels and guesthouses, just steps from pure un-modernized nature where there is no light pollution. Best Solo Travel Destinations in Asia

Sometimes you need to see the world from a different perspective to appreciate life. The same goes for traveling; you need to get out of your comfort zone and try something new, like traveling alone. The Asian continent offers a unique, exotic and rarely seen destinations that are worth exploring. We selected five best and safe places in Asia that are perfect for traveling alone.

Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta (often called “Jogja”) is a city on the Indonesian island of Java known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. There are several cities in Indonesia that are nice for traveling alone, and Yogyakarta is on top of the list. It’s very easy to reach the city; you can travel by plane, train or bus from within Indonesia. The ticket prices are economical, depending on what season of the year you plan to visit. There are many reasons why Yogyakarta is a part of our list. First, it is a low budget destination. There is a wide selection of good and affordable accommodations for solo travelers. There are many and a variety of street food spots within the city and many unique cafes and restaurants that serve traditional as well as international foods and menus. Among the many places to see are the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Taman Sari, Benteng Vredeburg and Pasar Beringharjo, all located near the downtown, a walking distance if you stay around Malioboro street, which is the most popular street in the city. Some of the temples outside the center area could be reached by Trans Jogja (local bus) or rented motorcycles if you can

drive one. The Borobudur Temple in Magelang is another spot most tourists to Jogja visit. It is about an hour and a half minivan ride from the city center. Yogyakarta is an artistic and historical city. Walking around the city presents an ambient learning experience. It’s very safe to walk in Jogja by oneself while hunting photos or culinary from the streets. You can also join Jogja Walking Tour (@joggoodguide), which is a free walking tour program with local guides that allows one to visit and absorb more about the culture and ever interesting stories about Yogyakarta. The other option is to join a bicycle tour (http://discoveryourindonesia.com/jogja-cyclingtour/), it’s fun, affordable, and dares you to explore the city from another angle. Singapore

For Indonesians, Singapore is a very near and a friendly destination. Yes, it could be medium to high budget, in terms of cost of living, but Singapore has a high standard of accommodation, transportation, and attraction. As one of leading countries in Asia, it has many lists of international hotels chains. For solo travelers, it could be a safety option to stay in recommended hotels. But for a low budget traveler, don’t worry. The City-state also has a wide selection of hostels and dormitories that are spread out in the tourist hotspots such as Chinatown, Bugis Street, and Little India. Now about transportation. The MRT transportation system is very helpful for travelers. It’s quite economical and eases reach to and from the main attractions. The MRT operates from early in the morning until midnight. If you love to walk, Singapore is also a clean and safe city to walk around in just to figure out the looks, ambiances, and the vibes. As a small city, it’s not that hard to explore through and through.

There are plenty of things to do when traveling alone in Singapore. The first is to visit the museums, which I have always found amazing each time. Many of them display very artistic and creative artworks, good facilities and information about the collections. A little bit pricey, but totally worth the visit. Another idea is to visit the parks and many of the public areas Singapore teems with. These open spaces offer relaxing environment to sit, relax, and contemplate. If you need more than just an ordinary park, a visit to Singapore Botanic Garden and Garden by the Bay is an excellent idea, because a walk through these enclosures reveals wonderful, unique, and innovative garden concepts. If Museums, parks, and gardens aren’t your thing, simply head to the one and only Orchard Road to shop until you drop. For more information about Singapore, please visit www.visitsingapore.com.

Penang

I have visited Penang twice, and it never gets boring. The city mesmerized me through its ambiance and vintage nuances. For sure this city is highly recommended for solo travelers. You can enjoy the main attractions, culinary, and all of the other fascinations by yourself. The city can accommodate all types of travelers. Penang has an international airport that connects to several direct flights from Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. It is also accessible by train from Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Penang famously known spot is its UNESCO recognized World Heritage Site, the “George Town,” an authentic town situated in the heart of Penang. A direct bus from the airport will take you straight to this vintage area. The best way to explore George Town is by renting a bicycle from are several Bike Rental shops around the town. Some hotels also provide these services. It only costs approximately 10 Malaysia Ringgit (about 70 cents (U.S.)) for a whole day. Ask for a map

that comes handy to help you find the trademark buildings and sites; some of which are Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Kuan Yin Temple, Penang Peranakan Mansion, St. George’s Church, and many more. The other thing that makes Penang fascinating is its street art. Thanks to Ernest Zacharevic, a Lithuanian artist, who left his mark with a beautiful painting in the town. His artworks are funny, fascinating and grab the attention of many visitors. After exploring some sites of interest in George Town, you don’t want to miss the street art that spreads out in several locations. The famous one is the “Little Children on a Bicycle” that is situated in Armenian Street and also, the “Boy on a Bike” mural on Ah Quee Street. You can easily get a map from your hotel or just download it from the internet. More information about Penang, please visit www.visitpenang.gov.my.

Hanoi

Some people are still a bit hesitant about Vietnam citing safety concerns. Is the country safe enough for one to travel alone there? Of course, it is safe and also fun. In general, Vietnam is a wonderful country. I found that the people are exceptionally friendly. For solo female travelers, there are plenty of areas where women can explore, indulge and relax throughout the country. So, nothing should stop you from visiting Vietnam because most of the concerns are misunderstandings hinged on wrong assumptions. Among the favorite cities to visit in Vietnam, Hanoi remains tops. It is the capital city of Vietnam and is quite laid-back compared to the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). It is safe to say that Hanoi gets these credits because of the ambiance and nuance it offers. You can relax and turn down the intensity in Hanoi unlike HCMC, where everything seems to be in a rush. For solo travelers, Hanoi offers many activities that include history, art, and shopping. I spent a couple of days in Hanoi and truly enjoyed myself. Sitting on any of the benches along the Hoan Kim

84

MAXX-M

Lake is especially rejuvenating. It could easily be one of the most peaceful spots in town. You can fully enjoy spending time there while reading your favorite book or just sit and enjoy everyday things that go on around you. After having some ‘me’ time, you can visit the Jade Mountai Temple, located near the lake or go straight to the weekend night market in the Old Quarters area. About the Old Quarters, the area is like a maze, because too many streets and alleys that gets one confused and lost. But this is considered Hanoi’s gem. You can literally find everything in this area. Absolutely, it is the best place for buying souvenirs, beautiful scarfs, exploring a bunch of food stalls, restaurants and bars. Oh, this is a heaven for tourists. I spent a half day walking around the Old Quarters. I got the itinerary and direction from the internet. You can also discover churches, temples, pagodas, and other historical buildings around the Old Quarters. For a better experience, you may take a walking tour; there are several options that easy to find on the internet. For more information about Hanoi, please visit www.vietnamtourism.com.

Macao

The last but not least is Macao. This city kinda draws less attention because most of the tourists prefer exploring Hong Kong. Disneyland and a myriad of shopping attractions are more appealing to holiday makers and solo travelers than exploring a city famous for casinos and famously dubbed the “Vegas of China.” However, one thing you must know about Macao is that it one of the cities in Asia that has specific vibes and nuances from the confluence of western and eastern cultures. That fusion of Portugal and China is what makes Macao one-of-a-kind city in Asia, and it is an absolutely perfect destination for those looking to travel abroad with no company. Macao was administered by the Portuguese empire and its inheritor states from the mid 16th century until late 1999 when it was handed over to China. The Macao Peninsula holds the old city center, where colonial ruins sit next to arty new boutiques. Further south are the conjoined islands of Taipa (has gloriously preserved Macanese architecture), Cotai (a home to the new mega-casinos) and Coloane (is lined with

colonial villages and pretty beaches). Macao has very interesting history to explore. I found it safe for a first-time solo traveler. It has a wellestablished public transport network. The bus guides, schedules, and routes are visibly posted at the bus stops, and they are very easy to understand. As a history admirer, I spent a good time in Macao. This territory has plenty of historical areas and buildings, the chief of which is Taipa area. I was mesmerized by the so many vintage and beautiful buildings and artistic details in the Old Town. You can choose between walking along the streets and renting a bicycle. This area would be a little heaven for photography enthusiasts because there are so many spots to capture there. hat is your ideal travel? Some of us feel the journey will be complete if we have our family as our companion. But as we know travelling with family has its pluses and minuses. But there’s always a way to make your holiday memorable together with your family. Here are some of the best places my family and I have found very family friendly and fun:

Who would have taught that one of the middleeastern countries would be part of our list? But the Dubai of the United Arab Emirates is obviously not your typical West Asian city. Dubai’s tourism offers many excellent and wonderful places to see. It’s a packed timetable with one memorable event after the other. Here are our top selections; First is Dubai Garden Glow; the best place where your kids explore the world that glows in the dark, with talking trees, lit-up bugs and food trucks that offer light bites. You must also visit Blooming Beauty at Miracle Garden situated in Al Barsha

South. The place that houses the biggest flower garden with more than 45 million blooming flowers across 72,000 sqm displayed in a variety of sculptures and designs. Dubai is also popular for its theme parks, and the latest attraction opened this year, the ‘Dubai Parks and Resorts’. Dubai Parks and Resorts is set to be the region’s largest integrated theme park destination. It provides some of Hollywood’s lovable characters in its MotionGate™ Dubai. It also has a Bollywood Parks TM Dubai, which is the first theme park based on the sights and sounds of the Indian Movie Industry, and Legoland Dubai and LEGOLAND Water Park set to feature 15,000 LEGO models and more than 60 million LEGO bricks. Tokyo

Japan is an amazing country. It does not matter how old you are, a visit here will mesmerise you because it is a land that promises to satisfy you at every turn. There are lots of people wanting to visit Japan resulting in a lot of international airlines having very good promotional tickets periodically within the year. Every city in Japan is a beautiful destination, but my family and I feel Tokyo is the most Family Friendly destination. You may need to raise your vacation budget as Tokyo is considered a high-spending city, but it is a wonderful place with never-ending adventure and non-stop activities Tokyo isn’t just a modern capital city, it is recognised as the main tourist attraction in Japan, with a lot of attractions suitable for all ages. Let’s start with Disney Theme Park. Who doesn’t like the magical experience Disney offers? Disney Tokyo has two. DisneySea and Disneyland. DisneySea Tokyo is the only Disney theme park in the world that is inspired by oceans tales and legends. Disneyland is all about the Disney. You might need more than a day to visit both theme parks

After a day at the theme park, you might want to visit the Museums. They are a great way to gain some knowledge about the country and city. There are many museums in Tokyo; there is historical, cultural, movies, themed and animated museums. Also spending time in the city parks with family is quite fun, especially if you visit during the cherry blossom season. For more information on Tokyo destinations, please visit www.jnto.go.jp.

Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is a metropolitan region south of Brisbane on Australia’s east coast. The East-coast city captivated us upon our touchdown to the city. I loved the ambience, the views, the vibes and everything about it. There are lots of things to do and places to go that are suitable for all ages. It is a non-stop fun filled city. Gold Coast is a home to theme parks like Dreamworld and Warner Bros. Movie world, which are the most popular and the favourite theme parks: Sea World and Wet’n’Wild. You will need at least a day per park. The Warner Bros. Movie World is designed for movie lovers. It is magical, and you will find a lot of your favourite movies turned into a ride and attraction, like Superman Escape which was my favourite. The rollercoaster takes you from zero to 100 km/h in only two seconds. Dreamworld is also as good; it is not only packed with fantastic rides but has a mini zoo inside the park. The Gold Coast is also famous for its zoo’s, sanctuaries, aquariums and wildlife parks. There you can have fun while learning about nature and animals. Start your journey at Sea World where you will discover the underworld, experience many unforgettable moments and shows by intriguing animals like in the dolphin show. Then visit the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. We had a wonderful day there, saw and experienced a lot of things unique to Australia such as cuddling a Koala, feeding Kangaroos, Free-flight bird show and witnessed the Aborigins perform ‘Didgeridoo’ and a dance show. t was in early March when I planned my trip to Bali this year; the sun was up, paperwork ready, sunglasses and beachwear on point, and I was so ready to conquer the island of the gods. It took less than half an hour from the airport to Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay, my home away from home for the next two nights. The moment I stepped my feet into the lobby when I arrived at the resort, I feel an immediate calm and relaxed feelings, it surely has some tranquil and peacefulness charms in it. Inspired by the layout of a Balinese village, the accommodations at this award-winning resort comes in seven distinct ‘villages,’ all with customary Village Chiefs.

The team at The Four Seasons escorted me to the fully-renovated Premier Ocean Villas in no time. The view from my villa easily took my breath away, the vast turquoise ocean and clear blue sky greeted these city-guy eyes of mine. The modern tropical design of the villa reflects the grace and beauty of Balinese architecture, the spacious bedroom opens onto the pool and separate outdoor living Bale, while an al fresco shower garden complements the elegant, stylish bathroom with vintage bathtub which I love so much. There are in total 156 pool villas at the resort; all housed within a private stone-walled courtyard featuring separate thatched-roof pavilions. Each villa includes oversized indoor and outdoor living areas, lush gardens, a private pool and a sun terrace.

Terraced down a hillside above the ocean’s edge, my Premier Ocean Villa offers stunning panoramas of Jimbaran Bay, while in the evening, the curving shoreline is ringed by torchlights on the beach creating a sweet closure to end my day at this corner of paradise. Sunset time can also be mean a cocktail time in Sundara, this stylish restaurant lures a classy crowd with its eclectic Asian cuisine, beachfront daybeds and great cocktails. I am enjoying the view of the stunning sunset while having a sip of Sundara Bloom in my hand; time goes slow when you are having a good time. After the sun sets on the horizon, the team escorted me to my table in the dining area which facing the sea. It was not the everyday moment for me to able to enjoy my dinner while looking and hear the sound of the great Indian Ocean at night. This experience felt both majestic and romantic at the same time. The other highlight of this astounding restaurant is the way they serve the food. Sundara offers Bali’s first customized dining experience which will bring flexibility to dine your way. The food is available in individual tasting portions, sharing dishes for two or family-style. And divided into the Hot, Cold and Sweet selection. The Lombok Oyster with chilled

Japanese dressing, scallions and pickled ginger is a must try for a starter. For the main course, I choose the Grilled River Prawns with dabudabu pomelo, urutan crumbs sour and spiced cream; the prawns was so fresh and fulfilling. The second main course was Thai Style Pork Ribs, the meat was well cooked, and the sauce dipping complements the dishes perfectly. Or if you are not looking for a heavy meal, then the duck and chicken parfait will be the best choice. And for the sweet closure, I choose the Dessert Sampler which consists of 7 Chef selection desserts of the day including cake, creme brulee, sorbet and ice cream for sharing. Although I love so much the ideas of lazing poolside, eating and drinking all day during my holiday, but at the same time I also always eager to experience the local culture and signature activities of a place where I stay, and Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay surely offers many of that experience. One of them is the wellness and well-being experience. The two Four Seasons Resorts in Bali each offer comprehensive yoga programs in an invigorating setting: One nestled amidst the jungle of the Sayan Valley, and the other perched on the edge of the sparkling Indian Ocean at Jimbaran Bay. Participation in the ground-breaking anti-gravity yoga (or also known as aerial yoga) graced my morning. The anti-gravity yoga took about one-hour duration; the exercise was started with an introduction and warming up in the first 15 minutes. Pak Gede, the

resident Yoga instructor, patiently explains to me on how to hold the hammock, to measure and adjust the length of it and to stretch my body to go further with the more advanced moves. Antigravity yoga is the type in which you are literally levitating in the air, and it is yoga. A hammock is a tool for all levels and styles of yoga, from beginners to advanced, from yin to vinyasa. It is a tool to hold on to for balance, help refine postures, assist in alignment, deepen stretches, and safely invert without compressing the spine. One of the highlight moves was the ‘one legged king pigeon’ pose; I was leaning upside down by the hammock while extending my torso and chest into a backbend and holding one of my feet using both hands. At first, it was so intense, but then the gravity relaxed my calves and naturally contoured my spine; a feat not easily attainable in other forms of yoga. Some of the greatest benefits come from the therapeutic aspects the hammock offers are improving blood circulation throughout the body, decompressing the spine, increase focus, building confidence and strength, overcoming fear and reduce stress. This antigravity yoga session gave me the opportunity to do postures I never thought personally possible. I feel satisfied and so refreshed afterward.

I had a good time riding a Water bike! Merging modern design technology, and engineering, the water bike is world’s most advanced human-powered watercrafts to date. It pretty much felt like I was riding a bike, with the pedals and all, the only difference is it floats above the water. You can choose between 30 mins or one-hour duration to experience an exhilarating and safe ride across the top of the waves, and a unique vantage point from which to sightsee around Jimbaran Bay. A truly fun and exciting experience to have!

On the second day, while the sky is clear and the sun is up, I was heading to the Coconut Grove located near the Sundara. In keeping with local traditions, guests are encouraged to connect to the power and purity of water through series of water sports and activities, and Coconut Grove

he beauty of the traditional cultural heritage and sophistication of a modern city has positioned Bangkok as one of the most visited cities in the world. Luxury malls that compete with a sea of boutiques and markets standing side by side with sacred temples and stunning palaces, amidst the high rise buildings and lush gardens scattered all around the city, has drawn people to enjoy what this enigmatic city has to offer to each of its visitors. Bangkok is a city of excitement with surprises at every turn; catch a tuk-tuk (an auto rickshaw) along the bustling Chinatown or take a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River streaming through gleaming temples. A perfect blend of traditional Thai and contemporary design, the room is refined by authentic artefacts, teak furnishings and silk fabrics, offering the epitome of luxurious city living without leaving the ultimate comforts needed for a good night sleep. Another great thing about the room, besides the tremendously comfortable bed, was the clear view of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, its beautifully manicured garden is truly a feast for the eye. Later in the evening, I soaked myself in the deep tub, in the marble bathroom as my exciting day in this vibrant city wind down. The open air garden and cocktail lounge are also available for a more casual dining experience, with a menu of Mediterranean light bites and Thai cuisine, and freshly squeezed juices, iced drinks, draught beers and exotic Thai cocktails. A visit to Bangkok will not be complete without experiencing the traditional Thai massage, fortunately, I got a chance to indulge in the exclusive sanctuary of Anantara Spa. Inspired by the Kingdom of Thailand’s history, Anantara Siam Bangkok offers a journey beyond relaxation in a nostalgic pampering through the signature 90-minute Siam 2482 treatment. BE 2482 is the year the kingdom changed its name from Siam to Thailand, and to commemorate this momentous date, Anantara Spa developed a signature massage to reflect the cultural fusion of that time, incorporating healing traditions from Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and China. Four distinctive massage styles provide unique pathways to holistic wellbeing. I love how the two bamboo sticks are used to invigorate the blood circulation through series of stretching and pressure point techniques to enhance flexibility and energy flow throughout the body. The other favourite part of the treatment was the eight herbal compresses, each wrapped in a fabric of healing indigo to soothe tension, aches and muscle pains.

Foot reflexology also given to promotes overall wellness by stimulating reflex zones on the foot that correspond with organs in the upper body. The intuitive hands of skilful therapists transport one into deep relaxation all the way during treatment. Combining ancient techniques with a signature oil blend, the Siam 2482 treatment uses Anantara Divine Peace Detoxifying Massage Oil to help combat stress and detoxify the body with a combination of juniper, lemongrass and lemon oils, while at the same time, nourishing skin with sweet almond and sesame oils. All 505 rooms and suites at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld are situated from the 28th floor upwards and features wide glass walls with panoramic views over the city. I stayed in a Deluxe World Room type on the 42nd floor, it was quite spacious and had an interesting layout with a floor-to-ceiling window that formed a curve shape offering a majestic view of the Bangkok’s skyline. The rooms’ design goes well with either leisure or business travelers; it has individually controlled air-conditioning, ensuite bathrooms, internet access, flat-screen TV with satellite programs, pay-per-view movies, radio and in-house music, minibar, safe-deposit box, multimedia connector, and tea and coffee makers. The World, the dining restaurant on the 24th floor of the hotel, serves Breakfast all-day. On offer is a wide selection of all-you-can-eat buffet, from local flavors to international cuisines. But one of my favorite dining venues at this hotel is the Uno Mas, a unique rooftop restaurant serving the finest Spanish & Mediterranean cuisine in the

most spectacular Alfresco panoramic city view. Located on the 54th floor, Uno Mas brings the warmness of Europe’s most popular destination in three unique settings as you embark on an unforgettable journey of culture and cuisine through the vibrant Iberian Peninsula. Besides the exceptional Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine amidst the stunning view of Bangkok’s skyscrapers, Uno Mas displays an eight-metre wine tower featuring over 2,000 bottles, a truly wine aficionados heaven. For starters, I had Alaskan salmon “Tiradito” with citrus marinade and “Gambas Pil Pil” which contains prawns, garlic, paprika and cayenne sizzling in olive oil, all the ingredients were very fresh and well cooked, it left me wanting more. Luckily I had the main course coming up; it was a perfectly grilled wagyu rib eye “A la Piedra” followed by mouth-watering duck leg confit with Foie gras “Pyrenees Paella.” The taste was mesmerizing and authentic, bringing the soul of Spain to your table. Another highlight of this restaurant is the Spanish “Cochinillo” Asado; it is a half slow roasted Segovian style suckling pig with natural gravy, green mojo sauce, and nam jim jeaw. What makes it unique is the way it’s served; because the meat is so tender, they cut it on a small plate, and then break the plate as a sign of good luck in the Spanish tradition. On the 26th floor is a complete personal health and well-being center with a 24-hour fitness facility, aerobics studio, and two floodlit tennis courts. The hotel’s outdoor swimming pool, complete with a Jacuzzi, sun decks and a pool bar, provides a relaxing spot in the heart of bustling Bangkok. Integral to this area is SPA Cenvaree,

an award-winning sanctuary that offers a wide range of holistic experiences, beauty treatments and therapeutic massages, available individually or as multiple treatment spa journeys for singles as well as couples. I had a two hour Spa Buffet treatment, which offers various treatments from Herbal Steam Therapy, Succulent Strawberry Scrub, Aromatherapy oil massage, Thai massage, signature organic facial and much more, for me to choose from within a timeframe. I love the tranquility and peacefulness of the place; it feels like I am transported from the heart of the bustling city into my own private serene sanctuary. The skillful hands of the therapist eased my sore muscles and relaxed my mind, I felt so refreshed and satisfied afterward. CentralWorld itself is one of the biggest lifestyle and shopping centers in Southeast Asia, offering 500 shops and boutiques, 100 restaurants and dozens of first-class entertainment and recreational outlets including a 15-screen cinema complex, making this place is a destination of its own. I

t was an Easter weekend in Jakarta and many people took the chance to leave the bustling and buzzing of this mega city. I was uncertain whether I should take a vacation or a staycation? My daughter and I decided for a staycation. We planned to stay somewhere within the city, a place which offers something for me as well as for her, something mature and something youthful. A place that will take us away from our routines, and yet not too far away. And the lot fell to the Gran Melia Jakarta. Gran Melia is located on one of the major access roads in Jakarta, Jl. Rasuna Said, Kuningan and remains one of the most prestigious hotels in Jakarta for the past 20 years. I was very interested in its Red Level, the exclusive and contemporary hotel lounge after reading what they had on offer. The Red Level rooms are located on the 14th to the 16th floors of the hotel. The rooms are spaciously 44m2 with a beautiful view of the Jakarta skyline. Guests also enjoy the private social lounge located on 14th floor and are treated to personalized check-ins and outs available only to the Red Level guests. Enchanting scents greeted us as we entered the lobby layered with prettifying flowers. We later found out that this scent is the trademark of Gran Melia. We were very much impressed with the way the hotel welcomed us through appealing to our senses. We smelled the fragrance and enjoyed the sights of both the flowers and the smiles of the Gran Melia Jakarta’s staffs. The check-in was smooth and impeccably timely. People who plan to stay for business, in and around Jakarta, would find this efficiency beneficial as time is saved to do other things or relax at the 24-hour lounge, to enjoy the view and maybe a bit of networking before heading out to meetings. Once we reached our room, our relaxation time started with the Mother-Daughter Yhi Spa. The Spa begins with some ginger tea and surprisingly thorough conversation about our health history. Yhi Spa staffs were very courteous to my daughter as this was her very first time getting a spa treatment. They guided her to choose the oil she prefers and taught her a thing or two from there. We took a 60 minutes body massage for 2, a good treatment for a young first timer. The result was as expected, we both felt rejuvenated. My daughter giggled a couple of times as she found the massage ticklish. I liked the oil that Yhi Spa uses. My skin felt hydrated and smoothened. The masseurs were exceptionally skillful and friendly. Five-Star Pleasures

Soon enough, I craved for tea and glided myself to the Red Level high tea. It was worth the efforts. I went to enjoy my “me” time at Red Level. I thought I would just enjoy the ‘alone in the crowd’ type of moment. I should’ve known better! I was overwhelmed with Red Level’s class and sincerity, to begin with. I ended up chatting with the staff about a wide range of topics from politics, everyday life, and family. It was as if I had just bumped into an old friend. We exchanged views about a lot of topics, but one thing I learned from the conversations was that the staffs were all proud of their Red Level and being a part of Gran Melia Jakarta. I indeed enjoyed my high tea and the company. It was dinner time, we chose to have dinner at “Yoshi Izakaya” as we both love Japanese barbecues. Yoshi Izakaya served what I believe is one of the best beef teriyaki in town. It was so tender and juicy topped with perfect teriyaki

sauce. The chicken teppanyaki was a mixture of the tenderness of the meat and crispiness of the skin. Seafood was grilled to perfection, not overcooked at all. The salad bar could use an upgrade to start up our appetite though. The ambiance was overly romantic for a motherdaughter time, but I think it is very soothing for those looking to have a quiet dinner after a tiring day. I decided to go to Red Level Lounge before I went to bed. The staffs knew me by name this time and asked about my daughter. They politely suggested bringing her so she could enjoy some desserts for a short while. They fairly and politely informed me the expected behavior for her to be able to enter Red Level lounge. I complied with the conditions. My daughter joined and enjoyed the desserts. We did not stay for long as it was a bit late.

As we made our way back to our room, the staffs made sure we were ready for the night and offered to deliver to our room soft drinks, cookies or any pastry of our choice. They made us feel like we have a royal pantry just a floor below us. They told us to come anytime just in case we need anything and grab from the shelves. It was like a deluge of happiness. The next day, we started our day with scrumptious breakfast at Cafe Gran Via. We tried not to be over consumptive as we so look forward to having Easter Brunch later on during the day. Gran Melia held Easter Brunch along with a baking class for children. We dipped ourselves in the pool, and soon after, my daughter was ready for her interactive baking class. There were plenty of children, both boys and girls joining the class. They played games while waiting for their cupcakes to bake in the oven. My daughter decided not to join the games

and sat with me for brunch. We treated ourselves to delicious Indian delicacies at the Café Gran Via brunch. My daughter and I are Indian food lovers. Our taste buds were spiced up with the Biryani and Green Masala Mutton. Creme Brulee was our next favorite desserts. They were just perfect! As I was seated and savoring the delicacies in front of me, taking the pleasure of having quality time with my daughter and relaxing, all at the same time, I realized that I was having a perfect holiday. I was surrounded by the scent of nature, wonderful sights of green and colorful flowers and the euphonious children’s laughter. One of my finest vacations indeed! A staycation! Gran Melia Jakarta Jl. f I had to choose just one city in Indonesia where I would love to spend my holidays, it would definitely be Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is home to a stunning wealth of cultural and artistic treasures. There are magnificent temples, palaces and monasteries ruins, cultural events, art galleries, traditional performing arts, and so much more. These are all parts of the living culture of Yogyakarta and it colours the daily activities of its residents. Because of its cultural richness and rich heritage, Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture. And I fell in love with the city the first time I set foot in it and just can’t get enough of the city. My hectic schedules had drained me, so I decided to look for a place where I could unwind, chill

I decided to have a little escape, so we packed our bags and flew to my favourite city, Yogyakarta, where I booked a stay at Plataran Heritage Borobudur. Just as the car that took us from the airport drove through a village, with rice fields all around, this beautiful colonial building suddenly emerged. Set amid the rice terraces of Kretek village in Magelang, Central Java, overlooking the lush green Menoreh Hills, Plataran Heritage Borobudur is an exquisite retreat that pairs elegance with colonial charm. and business travellers, infused with the serenity of a tropical garden and the mystical Borobudur ambience. As I stepped out of the car, I immediately sensed the tranquil village atmosphere surrounded by the most picturesque vistas of paddy fields, tropical gardens and the lush Menoreh Hills. The hotel its self is simply elegant and modern, my room boasts an enchanting view of the Menoreh Hills. The room was an elegant retreat, furnished with a king-size bed, bathroom with bathtub and shower, sofa and work table, and a private outdoor terrace or balcony. When it comes to food, Plataran never fails me. I love how they always let the tastes do the talking in all the resorts and restaurants, and have done the same at Plataran Heritage Borobudur. Indulge in an authentic taste of Indonesia at Stupa, whose menu of Indonesian specialties takes you on a mouthwatering culinary journey across the archipelago. Enjoy the relaxed ambience of Stupa’s open-air setting where the food is accompanied by divine views. Plataran Heritage Borobudur lies just steps from The Heritage Convention Center, an unrivalled event venue in the Borobudur area. A versatile venue for well-executed board meetings, corporate gatherings, seminars and conferences.

Staying at Plataran Heritage Borobudur means that I am only minutes away from Puthuk Setumbu (Bukit Manoreh) – the best place to watch the famed Borobudur sunrise. I woke up early and climbed the hills, there were a lot of people trying to find the best spots to watch the sunrise. On a very bright day, we can see the sun rising behind Borobudur temple, it was a very cloudy and foggy morning, so I couldn’t see the temple however it still was one of the best sunrises I ever saw. I think the cloud actually made the atmosphere more magical. Although I only spent a couple of nights as Plataran Heritage Borobudur, it was exactly the short break that I needed. As I prepared to say goodbye to Plataran Heritage Borobudur, I realised that it is only when you take a break and step back from the daily routine that can you start to understand what Italians mean by “la vita e bella, or ‘life is beautiful’.” My time at the resort gave me the chance to do nothing, I spent peaceful hours just soaking it all in, and in those times, I was able to realise how beautiful and precious life is. I often take many things in this life for granted, and I spend too much time working and forget to stop and smell the roses. Thankfully, I found a little slice of heaven at Plataran Heritage Borobudur. Plataran Heritage Borobudur Dusun Kretek, Karangrejo, Borobudur Magelang - Indonesia

The City of Possible Dubai is known as the “City of Possible with fun and thrilling activities, for solo, couple or even family travelers. How about Dubai as a family destination, could you expand on that?

Dubai is a very attractive family destination. In the Middle East, Dubai is the top family vacation destination. We realized this a few years ago, and as part of our strategy for Tourism 2020, we want to expand on that fact that Dubai is a very fun and safe family destination, we want to make sure the rest of the world knows it, seizes it, wants to come and even do repeat visits.

Ms. Jessie Ling What makes Dubai such an interesting travel destination for tourists from all around the world?

The reason is that Dubai is so eventful. During the winter months from November to April, we have a lot of outdoor festivals, for example in February, we have the food festival, and along the beach there are beach canteens and pop-up containers, selling different types of delectable cuisines. These exciting events are scattered around Dubai on different days and offer many different activities, which are just one of the many things in Dubai that are so interesting for tourists from all around the world. Dubai is also known as a culinary hub, could you elaborate?

Well, if you look at New York or London, you will think that there are a lot of nationalities gathered there and that makes it very cosmopolitan, but actually, Dubai is the most cosmopolitan city in the world. We have more than 200 nationalities living in Dubai, much more than any other city, that is why there are a lot of authentic cuisines as well as a mix match of the cuisines here. Sometimes you will question the origins of the food here “is that Lebanese food?”, “is that Syrian dish?” You don’t quite know what it is because in a city like Dubai you get a lot of fusion. You can have an authentic cuisine or a fusion cuisine all at once. So Dubai by itself, if you look at just the nationalities, there are lots of foods varieties. And also because of the way the city is, all the top Michelin star chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Jason Atherton, Tom Kitchin and more, all have restaurants here in Dubai.

In 2016, we had two big theme parks that opened here; one is the IMG Worlds of Adventure, consisting of Cartoon Network, Lost Valley, Marvel Adventure and an all-in-one weatherproof indoor theme park. The second is the Dubai Parks and Resorts which consists of a Bollywood Park (the first Bollywood theme park in the world), Legoland Dubai which is also the first Legoland Waterpark in the world, and finally MotionGate Dubai, which consists of all movie related activities and entertainments, from Sony Pictures and more. When is the best time to visit Dubai?

I would say, just as every dish is nice, so every month is a good month to visit. But my personal recommendation would be from October to April, our winter months. Because, those are our very busy months with many outdoor activities; you can dine along the river or dine next to the beach. And with all the interesting attractions that we have now, all the malls, IMG theme park, in which everything is indoor and temperature controlled, there is no reason why we shouldn’t come during summer as well. What do you like the most about Dubai?

I am Singaporean; I love food, so the gourmet part of Dubai is what I like most. Being able to have your street food all the way to your big fivestar restaurants is what I love so much about this city. You can have Jordanian waffle, Iranian desserts, Iraqi fish, Yemen biryani dish, all of these authentic foods, best of the best in the world, in just a stretch of a few blocks here and there, so easy and fascinating. This is truly a unique and fun experience for my friends and I when they come visiting Dubai. If you have to describe Dubai in 5 words, what would it be?

Romantic, Dynamic, Relaxed, Beautiful and Possible. Everything is possible in Dubai; you can go skiing here, shopping, experience different cultures, enjoy rides on fast and luxurious cars, marine cruises, and much more. There is always something for everyone here in Dubai.

I

have known Friskarani S. Sugandi, also well known as Karan, for years; You never get bored when talking with her. She seems to know it all, from the latest in the economy, to what’s hot in the industry, from the newest and hippest coffee shop to her favorite Korean drama. Karan is such an inspiration to me, not only has she climbed to the top position at Samali Hotels & Resorts but because she did it with style and in heels. I sat down with her to find out more about her success story. Can you tell us a little bit about Samali Hotels & Resorts?

There are four brands under the Samali Hotels’ wing with 5-star Hotel Ammi, 4-Star Allium Hotels, 3-Star Arum Hotels and the 2-Star Azara Hotels. Samali Hotels have been adding color to the hospitality industry for the past five years. We now operate hotels in Cepu that includes Ammi and Allium, and Allium hotels in Batam and Tangerang. Medan and Yogyakarta remain on our radar for the next hotels. Which of them is your favourite hotel?

I love them all because they are all unique: the Hotel Ammi in Cepu radiates the feeling of entering an oasis in a small district; I love both the dome and meeting rooms in the Allium Tangerang; the complimentary view of Singapore from Allium Batam’s top floor; the typical resort like Allium Cepu with its large pool. What differentiates Samali Hotels & Resorts offer from other hotel brands?

Samali was established by a team of people who are service oriented and knowledgeable in hospitality management, from various backgrounds in premium five stars to budget hotels. Samali is supported by a holding company with a long track record of performance as developers and civil engineering which has provided Samali with additional knowledge and experience. Samali hotels’ concept is carefully thought of from product planning to the application of unique services that create an advantage over competitions. Additionally, the hotels’ architecture is designed uniquely so that the hotel can become a destination in itself in the area they are built. The philosophy to provide excellent service to every guest through all the 5 senses: hearing, touch, taste, sight and scent (HOTS | Harmony of the Senses) introduces an exceptional service culture for new employees and is mandatory in training modules. Service excellence is the basic key to providing service to guests.

What do you like the most about Samali Hotels & Resorts?

I always look forward to being in a place where excellence is constantly in demand while giving room for a healthy and positive working environment. Through discussions, even small talks and sharing moments, I often gain new insights and continuous learning is conserved. Samali Hotels is a great place to work and each day presents opportunities to learn new things. Everyone has a place and a sense of ownership in the company. The culture is great, the environment is incredibly empowering and the core values align with my own virtues. Please describe yourself in 5 words

Creative; I believe that there is always a way out. when I get stuck and I might think of it all night long even while I am doing different activities. Straightforward; I keep it simple and direct and not interested in unhelpful details, but rather say things as they are and my team appreciate it. Passionate; I love my work like I do my family. Loving them makes it easier for me to swim and dive in, every moment. Strong; I am confident all the time and belief that I am able to achieve even more than the necessary; from simple things like pursuing happiness and being healthy. Persistent; I persevere and remind others never to ‘give up’ but to continue on and on towards the goals. Name one woman you most admire and tell us why

Anne Patricia Sutanto - Vice President Director, Pan Brothers. I admire her success and work. She is a typical hard and smart working Leader and never leaves anything unfinished. On the road to achieving her spectacular goals and career, she is also actively engaged in various philanthropic efforts. As one of the most powerful Indonesian business women, she prioritizes her role as a mother. A loving, yet firm look from a woman that functions in two important ‘shoes’ every day; being a great leader in the office and being a great mom at home. The switching moment has to be quick and seamless to keep everything smooth and balanced in a way. How hard it is for a woman to have a career in the hospitality industry?

Balancing between career, family and me time. Women working in the hospitality industry should be strong physically and emotionally. It is indeed time-consuming, and peaks at certain periods when going the extra mile is required. At this point, excellent time management skills come handy.

Delicious Jia Contemporary Chinese dining at its best.

hen it comes to mouth-watering dishes, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta is home to some of the city’s best restaurants. Chinese food lovers must by now be familiar with Jia, the hotel’s signature restaurant taking the place of the former Shang Palace. In Chinese, Jia means “home” and also “first.” Much to the delight of diners, Jia serves as home to a line-up of delectable dim sums, sumptuous roasted fare, and well-loved celebrated Chinese dishes. The blend of classic Chinese cuisine and stylish presentation gives each dish a little twist, yet preserves its original recipe. The food is not the only thing that Jia pays attention to. With Tokyo-based firm Bond taking over its design duties, Jia features contemporary Chinese-inspired interior, an update rather than a departure from tradition. Taking more subdued shades of cobalt and a range of earth colours splashed with a geometric open-faced brick wall feature and modern ornamental wooden panels. The entire space also shines with industrial glass and brass fixtures. The main dining area seats up to 122 guests, while six private dining rooms, named after iconic Chinese flowers, give diners a discreet option that seats up to 20 guests in each room. RS SIPPY – the popular, iconic bar and restaurant in Sydney’s Double Bay – has expanded the brand to launch a stylish pool club in Bali. A modern oasis, Mrs Sippy Bali is set to become Seminyak’s newest ‘see and be seen’ venue with a casual and relaxed atmosphere with ample spaces for swimming, sunning and dancing from day to night. Designed by Akin Creative, Mrs Sippy Bali is a chilled escape from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak. Local stone, timber, brick and custom tile are used alongside bespoke lights and furniture to create a slightly retro feel with a modern vibe. The 800m2 saltwater pool and the diving platform are the central focus of Mrs Sippy Bali. With soft curves, rendered edges and gentle beach entries, the pool is surrounded by Mediterranean-style architecture, daybeds, cabanas, gardens and shady palm trees, providing a multitude of open and private spaces. The on-site restaurant and bars feature menus and cocktails that are light, fresh and fun. Cheese Adventure Lately, I found many cafes focusing on dessert as their signature offering. Well, this is a good thing. Among the popular and easily found desserts in town is the cheese tart or cheesecake. This dessert is imported straight from Japan draws attention from dessert lovers in town. Text by Priscilla Picauly | Photos courtesy of each brand

Pablo Cheese Tart Famously known as a world’s best cheese tart, Pablo got the attention of many since they opened the first outlet in Gandaria City, then later opened the second outlet in Neo Soho, @ Podomoro City. Pablo originated from Osaka, Japan, the popularity expanded to South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines then Indonesia. Pablo provides variant flavours such as Original Cheese Tart, Chocolate Cheese Tart, Matcha Cheese Tart and the newest, Strawberry Cheese Tart. In addition to selling the signature Cheese Tarts, Pablo also has Hokkaido Mille Crepe and sets up Pablo Mini Set, where buyers can choose their favourite flavour of Pablo Minis combined with a drink of their choice. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart Another Japanese dessert present in town. I found this interesting baked cheese tart through social media since last year. In Japan, the store has long queues every single day, including at their international franchises in Brunei Darussalam, Singapore and Malaysia. Now Jakarta is welcoming the delicious Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart. Today Hokkaido has two outlets, at Mall Kota Kasablanka and Senayan City. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart is only available for its original cheese tart in mini sizes. (Instagram @hokkaidobakedcheesetart).

Uncle Tetsu Indonesia Uncle Tetsu Shop is now in Jakarta. The iconic brand from Fukuoka, Japan, continue to prove their quality for over 30 years. With so many cheese tart and cheesecake cafes around Jakarta currently, perhaps some of us question the taste, in comparison to other brands. The texture is fluffy, soft, sweet and light, it’s kinda different from other cheese tarts. Uncle Tetsu Shop opened their first outlet in Jakarta in Central Park Mall. The outlet only sells a dish which is their signature cheesecake. (Instagram @uncletetsuindonesia).

Fuwa-Fuwa World Lastly, Fuwa-Fuwa World. The brand grabs my attention last year. Originating also from Japan, it now has two outlets in Jakarta, at Elang Laut (Pantai Indah Kapuk) and Central Park Mall. The meaning of FuwaFuwa in Japanese is ‘something fluffy and light,’ and it also defines the taste of their cheesecake. The cakes are freshly baked daily and their outlets offer a ‘grab n’ go’ concept. Fuwa-Fuwa has three different flavours, the Signature Cheese, Chocolate Cheese and Matcha Cheese. fields in Kulon Progo. Complete with a garden in the surrounding area, this super attractive tourism destination in Yogyakarta is more Instagram-able. Besides this new attraction, Goa Kidang Kencono and Curug Glimpang are great alternative places to visit in Desa Wisata Purwosari.

As part of Hyatt Thrive for Sustainable Economic Growth and following the program from the regional Ministry of Tourism that recommends every hotel maintains 1 Dewi (Desa Wisata) or Tourism Village, Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta has, since mid 2016, started developing a ‘Desa Wisata Purwosari’ which is located in the Kulon Progo district. And, on 16 May 2017, they launched Ayunan Langit Watu Jaran, which will stand as the ‘hot new and exciting’ tourist destination in the city. It is located at the Kulon Progo, about one hour drive from the city centre, and people may enjoy adrenaline boosting activities such as swings. The construction of Ayunan Langit Watu Jaran was initiated by the General Manager of Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta, Mr. Nurcahyadhi, assisted by local engineers. At the height of 800 metres above sea level, the swing is safe and fun for everyone to enjoy the breathtaking view of hills and paddy

The “Hyatt Pink Ribbon” is part of Hyatt Thrive for Health support, also initiated by Mr. Nurcahyadhi. Since 2013, Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta has shown great concern and participated in breast cancer awareness and prevention programs. “Pink Ribbon” is the hotel’ women association tasked with this program. They collaborate with Yayasan Kanker Indonesia/YKI (Indonesian Cancer Association) in Yogyakarta to assist in funding for treatments and remission for breast cancer patients. Many social and fun activities, in this regard, take place all year round in the hotel to support women to live healthier. “We hope that Ayunan Langit Watu Jaran becomes one of the alternative tourism icons in Yogyakarta, especially in Kulon Progo. “Hyatt Pink Ribbon remains an annual event at the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta since 2013. The upcoming one will be on 15 October 2017. The main purpose of this program is to educate the public to raise awareness about the many issues surrounding of cancer, especially for women, and through this program, we also raise funds from the participating communities to be distributed to breast cancer patients through YKI Yogyakarta,” explains Mr. Nurcahyadhi. Initiated by the MarComm and HR Dept, and as a part of its Earth Hour celebration in March, Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta held a colouring and drawing competition for children and the proceeds were donated to Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Jogja (YKAKJ); a non-profit social organisation tasked with taking care of children battling different forms of cancer and leukaemia. The management team at Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta, also individually support the children by making out time to drive them to the hospital in the mornings for their treatments. The USD 5000 Hyatt community grant was donated by Hyatt International to YKAKJ for the patients in 2015. And through yet another program called “Dare to be Bald” (Berani Gundul) event, where the employees of the hotel shaved their hair as visual support for cancer patients, and for each bald head, the hotel will donate IDR 100,000 through YKAKJ. “We share a common purpose. This Purpose is the reason we exist, and it is the basis of our actions, our daily interaction with our guests, fellow employees, business partners and the local communities. Simply: We Care for People so they can be their Best. We care for children with cancer, we want them to be healed, grow, and achieve their dreams and goals. We care about their parents, we want to be a capable friend that can motivate their spirit and be a support to share in their burden and struggles. We want to be there for them because we care.” – MarComm & HR Dept.

As a five-star hotel in Yogyakarta with a beautiful lush garden, Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta bagged the prestigious “Best Green Award” in ASEAN and at national levels. And, as part of Hyatt Thrive for Energy & Environmental sustainability and the commitment to ‘green spaces,’ the hotel adopted a public garden #greenJogja as well as joined the fight against vandalism on those parts of Jogja that constitute an eyesore to the city, thereby damaging the cultural image of Jogja #cleanJogja. The hotel gives Mango Trees and ‘Biopori’ (a new method for soil fertility and water absorption) to two Primary Schools around the Hyatt to demonstrate their “Care for your surrounding” initiative. Lastly, in a great tribute to the local community, the hotel renovated the house of a low-income family nearby the hotel. Previously in a delapidated condition, the house was renovated into a modern home equipped with good sanitation systems in the bathroom, kitchen facilities, and better windows. “Doing good is expected of every human being. Hyatt as a company, and a big corporate citizen, is trying to provide an effective path for colleagues and employees to do follow. Not only for the people that we help but also for ourselves. So that we can remain grateful and have a meaningful life. Success is not enough if others don’t find it meaningful, and the meaning of life can only be achieved by doing good. We sincerely hope that more people will be involved in the Hyatt Thrive movement, and that the world becomes a better place for all of us.” – Marcomm and HR Dept. TRAVEL TIPS

Travelling Solo 101

As you travel alone, being totally responsible for yourself, it is inevitable to discover just how capable you are. Travelling solo can be difficult at the first time as you will leave your comfort zone, but at the end it can be so much rewarding as you discover yourself more, meet new friends, and open your eyes to new perspectives and. Here are some tips to make your solo travelling experience more exciting and enjoyable. Text by Dennis Latif 1. Learn a little of a new language

Always make the effort to learn a few words and phrases before you travelling. Just knowing how to introduce yourself, start a basic conversation or count from 1 – 10 makes a lot of difference. People love to know you are making an effort and doing your best to interact, they will feel respected and treat you the same. 2. Find your people

In today’ social media era, use Facebook or Instagram to ask for connections where you are travelling. Offer to take local friends of friends out for dinner, and you will be surprised how many people will take you up on it – everyone likes to be a tour guide for a day. Do not forget to seek out your interests in your destination and meet people on the same page.

4. Dine alone, why not?

5. Photo, photo and photo

124

MAXX-M

Travelling alone sometimes make a person too lazy to take a picture of himself/herself. Don’t be. You can always take a selfie or ask a friendly stranger to take a photo of you. It will make a good memento of your journey, and it is easier for you to tell your travel story to friends at home as you have a trace of it.

6. Give yourself a break

3. Know your interests

Are you a sociable person who wants to be in the middle of everything (you might go crazy if you cannot communicate, so head where you speak the language) or you are more of an introvert (observe a culture, forget the language barrier and go for passive entertainment instead)? Find out what suits you best.

As you might be tempted to live on fast food to avoid awkward restaurant situations. Don’t. In fact, fancy establishments are fantastic places to dine alone. Waiters are happy to help solo diners who smile and say, “I made a special trip just to eat here. What do you recommend?”

Remember that it is OK to spend the occasional night in, watching movies in your hotel room. You do not have to be out every night on your trip, it could be exhausting. Know your limit, give yourself the good rest you deserve and wake up early in the next morning, full energy.

7. Safety is number one

Travelling solo can be safe and rewarding, but be mindful of safety concerns as you would when travelling in a group or as a couple. Be careful at night in big cities, watch your drinks, be aware of local scams and keep a close eye on your valuables.

How could I sleep at night or wake up the next morning if this not-so-little guy keeps watching over me? lol

Wonder Woman

Director : Patty Jenkins Cast : Gal Gadot, Robin Wright, Chris Pine

Since it was introduced through Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, many viewers couldn’t wait to see more of and the whole story of “Wonder Woman.” Her performance in that movie totally stole the show. And we are relieved that the movie will open in theatres this June. If you watch the TV show version, the story only described how Wonder Woman had to contend against some bad guy. But the movie version will tell you her background. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, the princess of the Amazons, and also a trained warrior. Living on a remote island, Diana and her people had no clue about what goes on outside their world until a plane crashed and a pilot tells them about the conflict. Knowing the true condition outside their world she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny. In other DC Comics movies Actress Gal Gadot had excellent roles, and by seeing the trailer, some critics and comments, the audience is hoping she’s the perfect actor to play Wonder Woman.
