Be Merry … What do you like most about Christmas and New Year? Is it the parties, the presents, the time off work? I remember when I was little, the excitement I felt in the weeks leading up to Christmas, then waking up Christmas morning and rushing down to find all the presents under the tree. And every year, I was amazed that Santa managed to give me exactly what I wanted. I never told anyone (besides my dad, of course) what I wanted for Christmas, but Santa somehow always found out. Years later, no longer a little girl, I still get excited this time of year, but for different reasons. In previous years, it was because of the time off work and the fact that December was the only deadline-free month. But this year, I have a different reason to be excited. This year I have learnt a lot about happiness. It was a very busy time for me in 2016, with a lot on my plate and little time for anything except work. Until one day, I decided to volunteer at an orphanage. I am generally not too good around children, and if you asked me now why I volunteered, the honest answer would be, I don’t know. One thing that struck me was how happy the children were, often in the face of very difficult circumstance. Some of the children had been abandoned by their families, others had lost their parents. Being around these children and hearing their stories made me think, why are they so happy? They should be sad and bitter, yet most of these children beamed with happiness. Then I looked at myself, and the more I looked the more I realized that I had every reason to be happy, only I didn’t seem to realize just how blessed I am. This is the time of year when people start thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. This year, for a change, I have decided to count my blessings instead. And it feels good. Don’t get me wrong, my life is not always easy, with friends who become enemies, promises that are broken, tears that are shed, but at the end of the day, I am thankful for every single thing, the good and the bad, in my life. Sometimes good thing falls apart so better things can come. As the year draws to a close, this is the perfect opportunity to take a welldeserved break and indulge in a little rest and relaxation. The best thing about Christmas and New Year is spending it with your family and friends, to share the happiness and joy with the people closest to your heart. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I wish you lots of happiness and love.

The Emirates A380 Blossoms at Dubai Miracle Garden A new botanical wonder has taken root at the heart of the world’s largest natural flower garden, in Dubai. Emirates Airline has teamed up with Dubai Miracle Garden to construct the world’s largest floral installation through a life-size version of the Emirates A380, covered in more than 500,000 fresh flowers and living plants. When in full bloom, the aircraft structure will have an unprecedented total stem count of five million flowers and will weigh over 100 tonnes (take-off weight of an actual A380 is 575 tonnes). The A380 installation comprises seven varieties of flowers including the Petunia, Coleus, Marigold, Snapdragon, Viola, Geranium and Gaillardia. A medley of over 9,000 flowers and plants make up the Emirates iconic logo, and 100,000 blossoms form the enormous wings, which reach over

Danny Parnack the New General Manager of Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers is pleased to welcome its new General Manager, Mr. Danny Parnack. He earned a Master of Business Administration, Hospitality Administration/Management from Glion Institute of Higher Education. A passionate German hotelier, Mr. Parnack has worked at several reputable hotels in luxury corporate and resort complexes across Europe, North America and Asia, where he represented well-known international brands such as the St. Regis, Kempinski and NUO Hotel. Through his more than 10 years of international exposure, he acquired experience in hotel management, business development and F&B management. His wellrounded background in the industry will be a driving force in helping the Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers maintain its excellent reputation in terms of products, services and facilities. His experience in Asia and Surabaya is quite extensive; after a short stop in Hong Kong, he moved to Surabaya as Director of Food & Beverage for a five-star hotel the city, before being appointed as Executive Assistant Manager in Yinchuan, China. Prior to working at the Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers, Mr. Parnack was Hotel Manager at NUO Hotel Beijing for the last two years. Cyril Calmet Taking the Helm as Executive Chef of Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta Cyril Calmet has been appointed Executive Chef of Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta. With 14 years of experience in the hospitality and restaurant industry around the world, Chef Cyril will oversee the hotel’s culinary operations, including its renowned French restaurant, Lyon. Having started his career at Les Terrasses D’Uriage – a 2 Michelin-starred restaurant in Vaulnaveys-le-Haut, France – Chef Cyril brings vast expertise in French cuisine together with a true passion for the culinary arts and innovation. His journey continued when he left his home country almost 11 years ago to discover new flavours in North America and the Caribbean, before moving to Abu Dhabi, where he earned several awards, most notably the Restaurant Chef of the Year from Abu Dhabi Gourmet in 2014. Fascinated by Asia’s culture and history, Chef Cyril then moved to Bangkok as Executive Sous Chef of The Peninsula, where he developed his Asian food skills. In a first step, Chef Cyril will showcase his extensive knowledge through the introduction of a new Lyon à la carte menu for Jakarta’s vibrant culinary scene, highlighting classic dishes reinvented in a modern way. When creating the restaurant’s new menu, the French native went back to his roots, taking France’s most classic dishes and putting his own creative twist on them. “I aim to share my passion for food through the new menu and create an elevated dining experience for our regular and new guests,” he says.

Taman Suropati (Suropati Park)
Taman Suropati (Suropati Park) Originally named Burgemeester Bisschopsplein, for the first burgermeester (mayor) of Batavia, G. J. Bisshop, the name was changed after the country’s independence to Taman Suropati, for the national hero Untung Suropati. The park designed in 1912 by P. A. J. Moojen, F. J. Kubatz and F.J. L Ghijsels. Today it is a shady, green oasis that offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta. It is a favourite gathering spot for community groups and exercisers. Taman Suropati offers Wi-Fi and plenty of comfortable seating, and it lights up at night, with a beautiful fountain in the middle of the park.
Taman Kota Menteng (Menteng Park) This park was inaugurated on 28 April 2007 and is located on Jalan HOS Cokroaminoto. In the 1920s, the area was an open field named Voetbalbond Indiesche Omstreken, or V.I.O.S Veld. As far back as 1921, Dutch residents were using the 3.4 hectares that make up the park for exercise. Taman Menteng is now one of the most famous landmarks in Menteng. Taman Menteng features a Modernist look with its combination of geometric and organic patterns. The gardens
are abloom with tropical plants and there are two greenhouses. There is also a playground, indoor soccer field and a basketball court.
Taman Tribeca (Tribeca Park) Tribeca Park is a refreshing oasis in crowded West Jakarta. The park is part of the Central Park Mall complex and offers vivid splashes of colour with its collection of ornamental plants and flowers. Tribeca Park also has several koi ponds and children can feed the fish at certain hours. Visiting Tribeca Park at night is definitely exciting, with the duelling fountains and glittering headlights.

hat m a k e s Bagan so special? What makes this ancient city so sought after by travelers? You can’t not love Bagan, with its morning view of fog enveloping the pagodas giving them a calming silhouette, trees warming their leaves in the sunlight and colorful air balloons rising up into the clouds that gives you a sense of paradise on earth. I wish I can go there! I have to watch all of it! And this wish of mine came true.
Home of Thousands Pagodas Bagan is almost synonymous with pagoda. This ancient city, also known as Aramaddana-pura (literally, the “City that Tramples on Enemies”) or
Tampadipa (“bronzed country”), is home to over 10,000 Buddhist temples. From 11th to 13th centuries more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries were built in Bagan. Still standing now are just 2,000 because others were destroyed in several earthquakes. Just this year, an earthquake in central Myanmar damaged over 150 pagodas in one of the world’s best archaeological zones, prompting UNESCO to help in reconstruction. Let’s explore Bagan. Ananda Temple My first stop was the Ananda Temple, which some compare to the artistic and classical Westminster Abbey in London. It was built around 1105 during the reign of King Kyanzittha from Pagan Dynasty and is said to be one of his greatest accomplishments. The Buddhist temple is an architectural wonder in a fusion of Mon and Indian architecture. Laid out in a perfectly symmetrical cruciform with several terraces leading to a small pagoda, it is covered at the top by an umbrella structure known as hti which is found in almost all Myanmar pagodas. Four alcoves each house one golden standing Buddha statue made of teak wood facing East, North, West and South. You’ll be totally captivated by the statues’ faces glow with a surreal radiance an effect of natural light entering through the high dormer windows IF you think that the golden Buddha statues are all there is to Ananda, you’re way off the mark!

This temple packs in quite a lot of interesting stuff, including some of the best stone sculptures in Bagan. Especially beautiful and well preserved are the stone sculptures depicting episodes from Buddha’s life which are just excellent works of art. Equally interesting are the restored mural paintings of Buddha, Arahats and lotus flowers on the walls of the devotional hall.
Shwesandaw Pagoda Wake up early in the morning and by 5 am grab the best spot in Shwesandaw Pagoda to watch the most breathtaking sunrise. Just be prepared to share it with the sunrise-watching crowd. Walk up to the fourth level of the pagoda (okay, third if your knees can’t hack it) and you can catch the view of thousands of temples scattered across the plains of Bagan embraced by fog. Magical! Because of the crowd, it might be a bit hard to meditate and find inner peace in the misty morning around the pagoda. But if you just sit

It is the tallest temple in Bagan, and its 60 meters height indeed gives it a towering and majestic aura when viewed from afar. It is made up of two white colored boxy storeys each with three diminishing terraces rimmed with spires and leading to a gold-tipped sikhara. Uniquely interesting is that unlike other temples which are mostly red-colored, Thatbyinnyu has a white and gray brickwork. And when you view it in the early morning or late afternoon, you experience a mesmerizing play of colors on the white exterior wall.

Sulamani Temple Sulamani, or the “crowning jewel”, sits three miles south-west of Nyaung-U. This central temple was built in 1811 by King Narapati Sithu, and resembles the architecture of Thatbyinnyu, consisting of two storeys standing on broad terraces, one on top of the other which creates a pyramid effect. The terraces are adorned with parapets and small stupas at each corner. You must admire the brickwork in this temple, which is considered some of the best in Bagan. It is so tight that it is said a needle can’t even be inserted between two bricks. Inside the temple it is nice and quiet, a good atmosphere to admire the remarkable paintings covering its interior walls.

away from the crowd, you still have a chance to peacefully celebrate a new day in Bagan. A few hours after sunrise, the crowds dissipate and you can take your time climbing up or down the steep steps. It’s totally a great photo-op, so don’t miss. Built in 1057, Shwesandaw is one of the first pagodas built by Anawrahta, the father of the Burmese nation. It’s a white pyramid-style pagoda with five terraces and a stupa top where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Bagan. Maybe you’re not a morning person, but catching the sunrise in this pagoda is absolutely one of the things you must do while in Bagan. And if early mornings just isn’t your style, then enjoy instead the magnificent sunset at Shwesandaw.

My friend told me to visit Bulethi (also, Buledi). It seemed as if this red brick pagoda promised nothing special, looking as ordinary as the next temple. My travel buddy and I found it difficult to operate our e-bikes while navigating through the dusty road leading to the pagoda. We almost missed the pagoda because there were no signages. There are plenty of pagodas that look alike, so you have to look carefully. It was quite an ordeal getting to it. When we finally found it, I thought our troubles were over only to find out that we had to climb the narrow small and steep stairs sans handrails! But come early evening, we saw the most poetic scenery of an orange sun setting on the plains while we perched beside a fellow traveler high up on the temple. Totally worth all that trouble! It was one peaceful scene that allowed me to clear my mind of worries. I just sat down on top of that small quiet pagoda, thankful for everything.

I asked for a less crowded spot for enjoying the sunset. I found nothing online about its history. The Pagoda is made of red brick as with most other pagodas. You have to climb a steep flight of brick stairs to the second level which is also the “rooftop”. It is on this level where I witnessed again another exotic sunset. This is my favorite pagoda – a simple one with no wall carvings but enough space to see the sunset casting a beautiful silhouette on the majestic Ananda and Thatbyinnyu and other smaller temples.
More Temples and Pagodas There is a myriad of temples and pagodas to visit in Bagan. Here are some tips especially if you have only two or three days in the city. Shwezigon Paya is the closest pagoda from the touristic Nyaung

U area. This Golden temple reminds me of Sule, Botahtaung and Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon city maybe because of the gold ornament applied all over the construction. Bu Paya is definitely a must visit if only because it has Irrawaddy River as a background. Mahabody Temple is just five minutes away by horse cart. This fascinating temple has similar design and architecture to the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, India. Shwegugyi Temple also has beautiful shape with beautiful view of Thatbyinnyu from the rooftop. Lastly, Htilominlo Pagoda has amazing horoscopes inscribed on the walls in order to secure the sacred site against damage or destruction.

Travel Tips: • You can buy tickets to Bagan Archeological Zone before entering the city. The admission fee is Kyats 25,000 valid for 5 days. This gives you access to all pagodas and temples all around Bagan, but does not include entry to the museum. • In Bagan, and in Myanmar in general, you must take off your shoes and socks before entering the main gate. You can leave your shoes on a rack, or just next to the door, or put them in a plastic bag and bring them with you. • For more efficiency, I suggest you use sandals instead of shoes. Also bring wet tissue to clean your foot after your pagoda visits. • Dress appropriately. You’re not allowed to wear low cut tops and your shoulders need to be covered. It’s not like in Bangkok where some temples provided sarongs, you must bring your own shawls or sarong. • You may take photos in almost all areas, but must be respectful of those worshipping during your visit. • The best time to visit temples is in the morning from 5.00 to 10:00. You can rest at the hotel then continue the journey from 3.00pm until sunset time. You’re going to have a hard time when pagoda hopping at noon because the temperature is around 40⁰C-45⁰C.
• There are no toilets in the pagoda areas. • In some pagoda there are souvenirs shop but they are quite pricey. Feel free to bargain. • Ask a map from the hotel or download from the internet. With thousands of temples, it could be confusing when searching for your destination. Make sure you download the temple’s photos also because many temples look alike. • For fun exploring, riding an e-bike or electronic bike is highly recommended. A little more expensive than a bicycle, but then you don’t have to pedal. Make sure the battery is fully charged. • For a different experience, take a day tour with a horse cart. For $20-$25 per day, you can sit and relax, enjoy the view while the driver explains the story behind the temples and takes you to hidden spots that you won’t be able to find by yourself. • Some travelers expect spectacular views and there is no better view than high up in the sky on a hot air balloon. For $275 per person, you can experience the exhilaration of seeing everything! You should book in advance and remember the schedule well.

Museum Asia Afrika & Gedung Merdeka Long before the Asia Africa Conference was held 60 years ago, Gedung Merdeka, located on Jalan Asia Afrika, had already had an interesting history. In 1895, it hosted meetings of Societeit Concordia, a group composed of Europeans, especially the Dutch, who lived in Bandung and its surroundings. In 1921,the building served as a conference hall and was famously known as the city’s most luxurious “super club.” The Dutch architect C. P. Wolff Schoemaker helped revitalize the building, giving it an Art Deco flourish. During the Japanese occupation, the main building was renamed Dai Toa Kaikan and was used as a cultural centre. After Indonesia’s independence, the building was used as the headquarters for Indonesian youth who were fighting the Japanese army and later became a government office. For me, Gedung Merdeka is more than a heritage building. This is a place where our nation declared its independence. Entering the main hall gives me
chills as this is where history was made. The main hall looks much as it did 60 years ago. You can sit in red leather chair while imaging the leaders of a newly independent Indonesia gathered in the hall. For more details about the Asia Africa Conference, just next to Gedung Merdeka is Museum Konfrensi Asia Afrika (Asian African Conference Museum). The museum contains displays about the conference, with pictures and notes that describe the history and figures behind the conference. Jl. Braga Street There is an interesting story behind this artistic street. A few decades ago, Braga was just a small street home to a scattering of deserted settlements. It was called the kidnaping street because it was so empty. Braga became famous after Dutch entrepreneurs set up shop there. The street starting to become famous between the 1920s and 1930s with the advent of boutiques modelled on Paris. Development Societeit Concordia (now Gedung Merdeka), Hotel Savoy Homann and a cinema behind Societeit Concordia helped boost the fame of Jalan Braga. Jalan Braga soon became an icon of Bandung. Some of the old buildings still standing along the street attest to the splendour of the past. For travellers interested in history, Braga is the area to find historic buildings. There are also street artists and a range of restaurants and shops. Jalan Braga never sleeps and is hopping 24 hours a day.
Gedung Sate Gedung Sate, with its trademark central pinnacle that is said to resemble a satay skewer, is a long-time Bandung landmark. Construction on the building started in 1920, during the Dutch

colonial era. Johanna Catherina Coops, the eldest daughter of Bandung Mayor, B. Coops and Petronella Roelofsen, laid the first stone. Gedung Sate was the work of architect J. Gerber, Eg De Roo and G. Hendriks, and involved 2,000 workers, including 150 sculptors and wood carver. The architecture of Gedung Sate offers traditional touches of the archipelago and its elegant style has made it one of the conic tourist attractions in Bandung.

What to Eat? Warung Kopi Purnama This classic coffee shop will transport you back to the 1960s with its old-school design and Nat King Cole songs playing in the background. This legendary coffee shop opened in the 1930s under the name Chang Chong Se, which means “please try.” It was renamed Warung Kopi Purnama in 1966. Yong A Thong was a co-founder of the coffee shop, having moved to Bandung from Medan. Warung Kopi Purnama is still run by Yong A Thong’s family with a fourth generation now in charge of the coffee shop. Warung Kopi Purnama specializes in coffee and toasted bread. Their specialty coffees are among the best in the city. When it comes to the bread, by recommendations are Roti Palm Suiker, Roti Pindaakas, Roti Selai Srikaya and Roti Dadar Ham. The Legendary Sumber Hidangan You might miss this classic bakery when exploring Braga Street because there is no signage. Sumber Hidangan, once located, doesn’t quite live up to its legendary reputation. It’s looking a bit worn around the edges, with dusty corners and empty display cases. But Sumber Hidangan has loyal customers, who continue to come for the memories and nostalgia, still buying breads and snacks. Sumber Hidangan was founded in 1929 and formerly known as Het Snoephuis. Similar or not, Stone Garden is a good place to capture a different side of Bandung. Citatah, Padalarang, Bandung Barat Tea Plantation in Pangalengan Pangalengan is located about 50 kilometres from Bandung and is known for natural attractions such as lakes, ponds, hot springs and waterfalls, and traditional villages. It is also famous for tea plantations, the most famous of all being Malabar Tea Plantation, near Mount Malabar. Tea cultivation in the highlands of Pangalengan dates
back to the 1890s. Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha established the first tea plantation on the slopes of Mount Malabar in 1896. He developed the area into one of the most remarkable tea plantations in Java. Visit Bosscha’s house, where you can enjoy freshly processed tea leaves. Pengalengan, Bandung Selatan Situ Patenggang Legend has it there was a couple named Ki Santang and Dewi Rengganis. They were so in love but were separated for a long time. Until one day they finally met. In that perfect moment, Dewi Rengganis asked her lover to create a lake along with a boat for them to ride in. Ki Santang complied and created a small lake called Situ Patenggang. Situ, from Sundanese, means lake. The lake itself is absolutely fantastic, surrounded by carpets of green grass and tea plants. Many couples come to the lake and visit Pulau Asmara (Love Island), where Ki Santang and Dewi Rengganis are said to have met. Standing in the middle of the lake is Batu Cinta (Love Rock). I
’m heading to West Sumbawa for the first time, starting my journey at Lombok International Airport and continuing to Kayangan Harbour for a boat trip to Sumbawa, accompanied by the rolling hills and cool sea breezes. After 90 minutes I arrive at Benete Harbour and then it’s a 30-minute drive to a secluded boutique resort in West Sumbawa called MYAMO Beach Lodge.
Long Journey We hear a lot about Moyo Island and Kenawa Island. They are beautiful, for sure. But sometimes we need something new. That’s why I’m super excited to get a chance to explore Sumbawa Island for the first time. From Benete Harbour, the closest city is Jereweh, and not too far from the centre of Jereweh is MYAMO Beach Lodge, a place to unwind and enjoy. MYAMO Beach Lodge by Private Sanctuary in West Sumbawa is a brandnew, dreamlike boutique resort located on the most beautiful beach in West Sumbawa.

It is a bit of a journey to reach West Sumbawa, but it’s the route to paradise. You know how people say the journey it is more important than the destination? Well, that’s not quite the case when your destination is MYAMO. There is another way to reach the resort. Instead of landing in Lombok and then crossing the island, you can touch down in Sumbawa and then take about a three-hour road trip from Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport to the resort.
About the Resort MYAMO opened in 2016, part of the Private Sanctuary group. MYAMO is beautiful and homey. A natural path leads to a vintage Volkswagen standing near the main door. Entering MYAMO is like visiting your family house or a beach house. The design is minimalist and the dominant colours are white and turquoise. Just off the lobby is an area that is used for the restaurant and a relaxation room. MYAMO has eight rooms and plans to add more rooms and a

pool near the beach. The resort offers Twin and Double Rooms, near the beach. During my stay at MYAMO, I had the chance to experience the Penthouses with a huge shared terrace. My days were filled with extraordinary views of the beach and Mount Rinjani. The room itself is minimalist with lots of whites and wood furniture. The glass door and windows let you fully enjoy the views.
is the best spot for a little sightseeing below the water. The underwater views were absolutely beyond my expectations. The reef is spectacular, with caespitose coral, arborescent table coral and brain coral, and schools of fish. MYAMO offers other water sports including surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking and diving. You also can join a fishing trip in the bay.
The Beauty Around MYAMO The resort is one perfect package. Beyond the resort and its glorious beach is a spectacular paradise of natural scenery. When I arrived at the resort in the afternoon, Mount Rinjani was not visible, so I woke up early the next morning to see the new day arrive and admire a mountain revered by many people.
There is also a tour to the waterfall near the resort. It is a 15-minute drive from MYAMO and then a five-minute hike to Jereweh Waterfall, or as the locals call it, Diang Kerela. This hidden waterfall is about 20 metres tall and the turquoise pool, about three metres deep, absolutely seduces you to swim in its sun-dappled waters. Besides water activities, MYAMO Beach Lodge has a nine-hole golf course not far from the resort.
A morning walk along the beach is a peaceful way to start the day at MYAMO. Not too far from the beach, just 10 minutes by boat, is Scar Reef. This

Breathtaking Komodo Located between East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara provinces, Komodo National Park includes the three larger islands of Komodo, Padar and Rinca, along with 26 smaller islands. omodo National Park has been selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Besides the about 5,700 giant lizards that are the main attraction of the park, the waters surrounding Komodo Island contain some of the richest marine biodiversity on earth, and the rugged hillsides and pockets of thorny green vegetation contrast starkly with the brilliant white beaches and the blue waters surging over coral. These are a few of the many reasons scientists and tourists are attracted to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey to Komodo National Park usually starts from Denpasar, Bali, where you take a flight to Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. Labuan Bajo offers plenty to do, from experiencing local culture at Melo village, chilling at the Pink Beach, cruising to Kalong Island and much more. And, of course, a trip to Rinca and Komodo islands to see the Komodo dragons is always on everyone’s itinerary.
Early in the morning, the guide will pick you up at the hotel and transfer you to the harbour to depart for Komodo and Rinca. It takes about four hours to get to Komodo Island by boat. You can go ashore and go trekking with a ranger in search of Komodo dragons and other wildlife such as wild boars, deer and birds. After some mind-blowing trekking with these prehistoric creatures, you will be escorted back to the boat and sail to Rinca Island via Pink Beach for some snorkelling. Upon arrival on Rinca, get ready for more trekking in search of Komodo dragons, wild boar, monkeys, water buffalo and birds. Rinca Island, being less known and less visited than Komodo Island, is a good place to see the giant lizards (measuring up to three metres) in their natural environment with fewer people to disturb them. Just make sure to bring along a camera, as the views are simply breathtaking.

agelang, in Central Java, is famous as the home of the world’s largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur. Consisting of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome, this 9th-century temple is decorated with more than two thousands reliefs and over five hundred Buddha statues, makes this temple one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. If you want to see the sunrise at this worldfamous temple, you should arrive by 4.30am. There is a shortcut from the parking lot to the temple, which takes about 10 minutes. Don’t forget a flashlight, since the morning is still dark. Expect to find plenty of people already waiting for the sunrise, each having secured their place among the stupas spread across Borobudur. If you are fortunate and the weather is good and
the sky is clear, you can see Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi in the distance. At about 5.30am the colour of the sky will begin to change, with traces of beautiful reds and oranges emerging against the lightening blue sky. As the sun slowly rises majestically between Merbabu and Merapi, some people on the temple will take out their cameras to capture the moment, while others perform their morning prayers. With the sun fully risen in the blue sky, the Borobudur Intellectual Tour begins. The temple guide will explain the history and meaning behind the carvings and sculptures of this majestic temple for about an hour. Prepare to be awed by the rich stories of the world’s largest Buddhist temple and one of the most sacred places for Buddhist devotees. There are magical feelings even if you are not Buddhist. A visit to this legendary temple is a must if you come to Central Java.

ount Bromo is located inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, beside Mount Semeru, in East Java. Located about 70 kilometres from Surabaya, or about a four-hour drive, Mount Bromo is easy to reach from the East Java capital. Mount Bromo, which stands at 2,329 metres, is the most iconic and the most hiked mountain in Indonesia. It beckons majestically despite having its entire top blown off and a crater that spews out white sulphurous smoke. It sits inside the massive Tengger Caldera, surrounded by Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand), an expanse of fine volcanic sand. And after an easy hike, travellers are rewarded by a breathtaking view of the ethereal landscape. Hike up nearby Mount Penanjakan in time to catch the sunrise over Mount Bromo. It takes about one to two hours to hike to the first vantage point. The sun rises at 5.30am, so you will have to set out early, depending on your fitness level. Maps and information are readily available at any of the official locations. You will also want to arrive early to avoid the crowds on the trail and to get a good spot for the sunrise. If you have the time and energy, there is another less-crowded
vantage point higher up with unobstructed views of the sunrise. Then trek down Mount Penanjakan and up to Bromo’s summit. It takes about one to two hours, again depending on your fitness level. Alternatively, you can take a horse across the sea of sand to the bottom of the steep stairs that lead to Bromo’s crater, to save some energy. The Best of Everything

ocated amongst seven districts, Lake Toba and Samosir Island can be reached by land from the city of Medan in about five to six hours. You can also take a train from Medan to Pematangsiantar and then go overland for approximately 60-90 minutes. Or you can fly into Silangit Airport and continue by car for about a two-hour drive to Parapat. From Parapat, the easiest and fastest way to reach Samosir is by ferry from Port Ajibata to Port Tomok in Samosir. It only takes about 45 minutes to cross the lake to Samosir, but the ferries do not run hourly. If you want something quicker you can take a fast boat, but these boats only take people and motorcycles, so you are out of luck if you are travelling with lots of bags. But if you want to really enjoy Lake Toba and Samosir Island, try taking a road trip around the edge of the lake. It takes up to seven hours to make the trip around the lake but the views make it worth every minute. I made two stops before heading on to Samosir. There were Sipiso-piso waterfall and Menara

Pandang Tele (Tele tower), two attractions offering epic scenery unlike anything you’ve seen before. What makes Sipiso-piso so special? It is a towering 120 metres, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Indonesia. Imagine how fast the water comes crashing down from the peak. That’s how the waterfall got the name Sipiso-piso, the water flowing over the top like a knife (piso) from the Karo. Tele tower is a three-story building built on the side of Tele-Naidoo, the only road linking Bukit Barisan to Samosir Island. It is about an hour from Sipiso-piso. For maximum effect, head to the top of the tower to enjoy the view of Lake Toba and Samosir Island. You can also see Pusuk Buhit, a hill that is believed to be the original home of the Batak people of northern Sumatra. If you are tracing the history of the Batak, you can start at Ambarita, an ancient Batak village on Samosir. The village was built on the orders of Raja Laga Siallagan, Huta’s first king, and has been an important hub for generations,

through the descendants of King Ompu Stone Ginjang Siallagan. It is a centre of community life, dominated by a massive tree and old stone houses. There are also stone chairs and tables made by stone, which is where customary law is carried out in what is known as chair and table trials. Officials and elders act as judges and prosecutor, listening to the story and then determining the appropriate punishment. Not far from the ferry port in Tomok, about 500 metres, is the tomb of King Sidabutar. The tomb is above ground, with a coffin made of rock. Not far from the tomb is a wooden puppet known as a Sigale-gale, a sacred object. These mystical dolls are said to have supernatural powers. Samosir also has a beach, located in the village of Hutabolon. This area does look like a beach, but is adjacent to Lake Toba, has white sand and even gets what look like waves. There is also a water playground and restaurants.

I
have always considered myself more of a mountain than a beach person. During a recent visit to Belitung, however, I was blown away by the beauty of the place and its hundreds of beaches. With sparking white beaches adorned with picturesque granite rocks and crystal-clear water, surrounded by hundreds of small islands, one can only wonder: is this heaven on earth? The Bangka-Belitung archipelago, off the coast of South Sumatra, offers the kind of quiet escape that can leave you feeling like a great explorer uncovering virgin beaches, totally unspoilt by humans. Bangka-Belitung was historically known as a centre of tin production, so its natural beauty was largely overlooked. These days, the tin industry is beginning to be eclipsed by tourism, as word gets out about the province’s beaches, blue water, coral reefs and giant granite rock formations. There are 189 islands surrounding Belitung, each with powdery soft white-sand beaches,

granite boulders and crystal-clear seas. The main attraction at Belitung is island-hopping and exploration. The best way to do it is to hire a fishing boat. We did just that at the white-sand beach of Tanjung Kelayang. Several granite islands can be reached by wading through the sea. More than likely, you will have the islands to yourself, to explore their unique boulder formations or just lie on the white sand. There is a small island made from granite rocks, including several giant ones shaped like a Komodo dragon. It took only 10 minutes to reach the island with the Komodoshaped stones. We clambered up the rocks to the highest point, which offered us a great panorama over the ocean, islands, beach and sand. Then off we went to Lengkuas, a little sliver of an island, less than a hectare in size, just off the coast north of Tanjung Binga village. The golden crown of Lengkuas is an old lighthouse that was built by the Dutch in 1882. You are free to climb to the top of the lighthouse, where you can get an unbelievably gorgeous 360-degree view of the surrounding islands and sea. The best time

to visit Lengkuas is from March to November, when the waves aren’t too big, so you can enjoy sailing, snorkelling and swimming, just as we did. We put on our fins and facemasks and did some snorkelling above the reefs, frolicking among the vividly coloured fish, which darted amongst us, clearly undaunted by these human intruders. Between Lengkuas and the fishing port of Tanjung Binga is another island, Burung Island. It’s bigger than Lengkuas, with white-sand beaches to the south and a rocky coast to the north. The most interesting object on the island might be the granite boulder in the shape of a bird’s head, which is how it got its name, Burung (bird) Island. During our stay at Belitung we continued to explore the island. Tanjung Tinggi is located between two peninsulas and the stretch of sand is most notable for all the granite boulders along the beach. Some of the boulders are as big as a good-sized house and are great for climbing on and getting some amazing views. There is also a fishing port, Pelabuhan Bilik, and along the bay a stretch of at least 20 traditional seafood
restaurants, where you can grab a coffee or a fresh seafood lunch. Tanjung Kelayang is another beautiful beach on Belitung, near Tanjung Tinggi. It is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the island and you can find a nice combination of white beach, scenic granite boulders and small islands just off the shore. If you want to swim, the eastern side of the beach is your best bet, with clear water that isn’t too intimidating and nothing but white sand. Walk along the beach about 300 metres to the north and you will find a group of granite boulders spread along the edge of the peninsula and the sea. Belitung offers incredible scenery, delicious seafood and unspoilt natural beauty. And the best thing is, you don’t have to fly halfway around the world to enjoy it. Just a short hop from Jakarta, Belitung feels like a whole different world. While Jakarta is all about rushing around and traffic jams, Belitung offers quiet moments, empty beaches and fresh air.

Artsy Interpretation What makes Hotel Vagabond Singapore so special? It seems every corner of the hotel offers a wonderful surprise, ranging from antiques to contemporary photos and paintings. Each item has been personally sourced or commissioned by Satinder Garcha. There are plenty iconic and fascinating art pieces inside the hotel – a solid brass rhino doubles as the reception desk and banyan trees are used to disguise some of the load-bearing pillars of the Salon, making the room look even more opulent. Another interesting feature is the video playing in the elevator, featuring snippets from blockbuster and cult movies, including Star Wars, Ben-Hur, Interview with a Vampire and Little Shop of Horrors. Because standing in an elevator with strangers is always awkward, Satinder Garcha
decided to install this piece of art in the elevators as a way to grab their attention and perhaps spark conversation. The video was made by Marco Brambilla. Perhaps the most controversial piece in the hotel is Leon Ferrari’s photo of his seminal work Western Civilization and Christianity, created to protest the Vietnam War. Other pieces include a monkey sculpture at Bar Vagabond by Franck Le Ray, the video-art installation After ‘Three Studies for Portrait of Lucien Freud, 1969’, and photos in all the rooms captured by Satinder Garcha. MAXX-M recently sat down with Hazel to learn more about the Four Points brand and target audience, what hospitality means to her and what inspired her to get into the industry. There are three brand categories in Starwood. First is luxury, second is a bit upscale and the third category we call mid-market. Within this third category we have Four Points by Sheraton, Aloft and Element. These are our fastest growing brands globally and in the Asia Pacific. This market is named according to the category itself, to indicate the key target audience, the midmarket sector. If you look at the global economy right now the middle-income segment is actually growing very aggressively, so this brand was born to cater to this market. What is the target audience for the Four Points brand?
Just like any of our brands, every Starwood brand has its own unique points and personality, so the target audience for Four Points is someone we call the independent traveller. This kind of traveller is someone who is confident, hardworking, seeking a life balance, they are flexible and easy-going but never compromise their standards, they are strategists by nature, they know what they want and go for it. In less than two years, six Four Points properties have opened in Indonesia. What made Starwood so confident about launching the brand in this country?
If we look further ahead at the Indonesian tourism market in 2019, the government is planning to double its tourism from the existing 10 million to 20 million tourists per year. So to achieve that number in three years, from a market-needs perspective, we know that there will be a big focus on tourism and that tourism will bring a demand for hotel rooms. So in that sense, we will have to be ready to support the tourism drive that will be coming very fast and furious in the next three years. We will be part of the infrastructure to support this tourism growth. Also, from a market segment perspective, there is very strong growth in this mid-market in Indonesia.
So, a little bit about you. Could you please share with us what inspired you to work in the hospitality industry?
The thing that inspires me to work in this industry is the diversity of culture, especially in the Asia Pacific where we are extremely diverse, from Indonesia, China to India and Australia. And also we get to travel and see other parts of the world. Those are the things that keep me motivated to work in this industry. What does hospitality mean to you?

Four Points by Sheraton, Bali, Kuta also has a strategic location, within walking distance of everywhere, from the beach, shopping areas, food destinations, nightlife. What is the latest programme at the hotel?
The hotel recently completed its kids club. The concept is different from most kids clubs. Kids do not just come and play, but there’s a programme and we have equipment and excellent spaces for play zones. Is Bali a fun place to work, especially in the hospitality industry?
It is. But anywhere is fun for me because I make it fun. Maybe Bali is more enjoyable because of the destination, the culture. That’s why many people dream about staying on this island. What has been the most moment of your career? The Four Points brand is relatively new to the Indonesian market, but in just over a year six Four Points hotels have opened in the country. Tell us more about the brand?
The Four Points brand was heavily anticipated in Indonesia because Four Points is known to

This is one of the best moments in my career, being trusted by Starwood to opening the first Four Points in Indonesia. It is a real rewarding moment but also challenging, because my team and I must put the signature out there. If we do it wrong, then the entire Four Points brand will be affected. Can you tell us the story behind the Four Points brand?

If we look back 10 years to 2006, the majority of traveller were 35 years old and above. Nowadays the situation is a lot different, the world is changing, travel habits are changing, there are so many young people exploring the world now. And they have a different travel style than previous generations. For example, they are more independent, they prefer to spend their time outside the hotel, exploring the city. This is what the Four Points brand wants to accommodate. What does Four Points by Sheraton Bali, Seminyak offer guests during their stay?
People are looking for a memorable experience during their stay, and not only in terms of eating and sleep. At Four Points by Sheraton Bali, Seminyak there are so many elements that have stories, for example the ornaments representing the five elements of nature. So when guests leave the hotel they will bring exciting stories that they can share with their friends and family. Can you tell us some of the points of interests near Four Points by Sheraton Bali, Seminyak? What will guests find near the hotel?
Our hotel is located in the prime area of Seminyak, which is well known for the lively Seminyak beach, where you can find happening beach clubs, cafes
and restaurants, and also enjoy the sunset after a long and exciting day. Or you can explore the interesting local stores in the area, and we are also just a few minutes’ drive from the famous tourist attraction Tanah Lot, and near the Canggu area, which is loved by surfers around the world. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do in your spare time?
In my free time, I very much enjoy hiking, movies, going to music festivals, and taking short (one-day) trips.

How would you describe the Four Points brand in the Indonesian market?
Four Points is a new brand in Indonesia, but it is one of the leading brands in the global industry, considering it’s a part of Starwood. In the past year, Four Points Indonesia has opened a number of properties, and the future certainly looks bright for the brand in Indonesia. Can you tell us more about your property, Four Points by Sheraton Bandung?
This is the third Four Points in Indonesia. Clearly, this property offers something different compared to other properties. The building itself is the most comprehensive. There are colonial touches in the architecture, the interior creates a good ambience, and the hotel is situated in a strategic location, particularly for culinary adventures and shopping. Compared to other hotels in Bandung, what can guests expect while staying at Four Points by Sheraton Bandung?
The hotel just opened seven months ago, so it is new, fresh and offers something different to guests. Look at the colonial-style building. In terms of room rates, the price is also competitive. With the Starwood brand behind it, the food and beverages department offers the best dishes that perfectly fit Indonesian tastes. What are some of the interesting programmes at Four Points by Sheraton Bandung?
We have a few interesting programmes at our hotel. For example, WOW refers to Woman on Wednesday. It’s a special promotion for our female visitors every Wednesday. We also have a daily brunch programme, while other hotels only offer brunch on the weekend. Describe Four Points by Sheraton Bandung in four words?

Indonesia is growing really fast in the middlemarket section and this is the segment where the Four Points brand stands on. So I think there is no better time to enter the Indonesian market. And also the values of this brand, which is simple and uncomplicated, are very relevant to the needs of the middle market. We deliver what every guest needs in terms of comfort and convenience, such as a strategic location, 24-hour dining options, full breakfast, etc. In other words, we deliver full service for the mid-market, which our competitors might not do. Would you please give us more insight into Four Points by Sheraton Jakarta, Thamrin? What makes it stands out from other hotels in the area?
In terms of location, Four Points by Sheraton Jakarta, Thamrin has a prime location at the roadside of the prestigious Thamrin Road, which none of our competitors in the area have. There is bus stop in front of the hotel and we are just steps from nearby shopping malls, dining places and many corporate offices and embassies. The hotel just opened on 15 August 2016. What are the strongest points of Four Points by Sheraton Jakarta, Thamrin?
We are the first Four Points hotel brand in Jakarta, and this will undoubtedly attract mid-market SPG members who want to visit Jakarta, because now they have the option to stay in this prime location, with great service and impeccable value for money. What are the must-visit places in Jakarta that you would suggest to your guests?
For leisure seekers, they can start their journey by visiting the National Monument (Monas), which is just a few minutes from the Thamrin area, and then off to the National Museum just across from the National Monument. You can follow that by shopping at Tanah Abang, which is loved by locals, or at two of the most popular malls in Jakarta, Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia,
which is also walking distance from the hotel. We also provide free shuttles to some of these locations. For family travellers, they might want to visit Ancol and Kota Tua, which is located less than an hour’s drive from here. What inspired you to work in hospitality?
For me, the inspiration came from my family. Many of them are hospitality graduates and work in the industry. I studied hospitality and tourism and immediately fell in love with the subject. I realized that serving and meeting new people were things I am passionate about. It does not feel like working; it is more like a hobby, it comes from the heart.

Do you have any tips for guests of Four Points by Sheraton, Surabaya in terms of things to do and see in the city?
Surabaya is well known as a culinary destination. Our guests enjoy a choice of culinary sites around the hotel. We also suggest our guests visit historical sites such as Tugu Pahlawan Surabaya. For shopping lovers, there are plenty of places to buy souvenirs, the closest being next door, Tunjungan Plaza, the legendary shopping mall. We can also create tours to Mount Bromo, one of the top destinations in East Java. What makes Four Points by Sheraton, Surabaya stand out?
Can you describe Four Points by Sheraton, Surabaya in four words?
Obviously the hotel is attached to one of the most visited malls in town, Tunjungan Plaza. The shopping mall is iconic in Surabaya; it is said that Surabaya without Tunjungan Plaza is nothing. The hotel is also strategically located in terms of being close to destinations and culinary spots.

What makes Four Points by Sheraton Makassar stand out from other properties in the area?
Our hotel is located between two main roads in the heart of the city, providing easy access to all the best landmarks and the business district in Makassar. We have some of the biggest hotel guest rooms and one of the largest function spaces in east Indonesia. There are five ballrooms and 12 meeting rooms, the ballrooms can accommodate more than 5,000 people. We are the first hotel in the city with a presidential suite with a private elevator. Besides the location and facilities, what else does Four Points by Sheraton Makassar offer guests?
Makassar people are very passionate about food and the city is home to many local dishes that are famous around the country. So it is no wonder that the F&B division is one of our strong points here. Even though our brand is not local, that does not hold us back from embracing and celebrating local culture in our services and products. For instance, we offer a wide array of Makassar food at the hotel such as konro bakar, pallu basa, coto Makassar and our signature dessert, kue Barongko. Many of our guests love our konro bakar and Barongko so much that they always come back for more. What is the market that Four Points by Sheraton Makassar is aiming for?
Makassar is well known as a hub for business in east Indonesia, which is one of the reasons the MICE sector is growing very fast here. We are aiming for this market, such as weddings, business meetings, seminars, gatherings, etc. Aside from that, there are also many people who come here for leisure since Makassar has many exciting places to visit and food to experience. Most SPG members choose our hotel as the place to stay in Makassar. Where are some of the must-visit places in Makassar?
There are so many places to see and visit in Makassar, such as Fort Rotterdam, which is built on the site of an earlier fort called Ujung
Pandang. There is Losari Beach, in the west of the city, which has been called the world’s longest dining table for the food stalls lined up along the edge of the shore. Makassar is home to the thirdlargest karst area in the world, called RammangRammang, or visit Leang cave, where you can see cave art estimated to date back 39,000 years. What do you like most about your job?
In the hospitality industry you get the chance to meet a lot of different people from different backgrounds, and no two days are exactly the same. There are always new challenges and situations, which makes the job exciting.

We started the PergiDulu blog in April 2012 and at the same time we also created the Twitter account @PergiDulu. We created our blog to share our experiences with others and provide practical information to the travel community. What makes PergiDulu different from other travel blogs?
Our blog is more informative because we love the details of travel, but we also mix in our own character so that it isn’t a boring, flat how-to article.

Not that hard. We just have to be smart about looking for opportunities. We can work anywhere and anytime and this flexibility helps us find the kinds of jobs that suit us. Usually these jobs are related to writing articles for publications, but we have a number of different income streams related to our blog as well. The biggest challenge is when we don’t have internet access. It seems that travel has become more than just something people do once year, but is now a lifestyle. What does PergiDulu think about this?
As long as people can afford it and don’t see it as a burden, we think it’s a good sign. What’s not good is if people see traveling as a trend and they are just following the trend. But if people find their passion in travel, why not?

Twitter and Instagram. Although we feel that the engagement on Twitter is on a downward slope, we can get the fastest answers or responses on Twitter. Instagram is the new trend and 2015 was a big year for us on the platform.
Tourism in Indonesia is stuck in the past and is worse today than it was in the 1980s. International tourism in Indonesian is highly concentrated in Bali. Outside of Bali there are hardly any foreign tourists. The biggest problem is the restrictive visa regulations that now exist in Indonesia. Prior to 2001, tourists received a 60-day tourist visa on arrival for free. After this, a visa on arrival system was applied where tourists could only stay for 30 days and had to pay US$25. The new 30-day free visa regulation is quite good, but not enough because Indonesia is so massive. Giving a 90-day free visa to foreign tourists would be much more beneficial and improve Indonesian tourism.

In Indonesia, Tebing Keraton (Bandung), Borobudur, Bromo. Out of the country, we think most big landmarks are good for a selfie, like the Eiffel Tower, Pisa Tower, Petra, the Great Wall, etc. Why? Because followers can identify with those iconic locations. Lesser-known locations are great too, but just don’t expect your followers to like them because they’re not familiar with them. Any tips and tricks to capturing the moment?
Try to capture the feeling of a place, not necessarily an object. It’s easier said than done. Now tell us about your last trip? What are some of the interesting things that

Indonesians are the friendliest people on earth and always love to help other people. Any suggestions or advice for Indonesian travellers?
Travel in accordance with your budget. If you cannot afford to travel to Europe, travel to Thailand instead and enjoy yourself there. If you can’t afford to travel to Thailand, travel to Pangandaran and enjoy yourself there. Travelling isn’t so much about where you’ve been but about how you enjoy yourself when you’re there.

his warm and cosy restaurant features an interesting design concept inspired by Warner Wong design from WOW Architects. The unique showcase of bottles and sake bar and lounge at the entrance invites guests to start their experience with good sake or other beverage. Long benches and tables create a relaxed atmosphere, while round birdcage-inspired tables made from rattan add an exotic flair. The highlight of Yoshi is the 19-metre-long robatayaki, sushi and sashimi bar that runs down the centre of the restaurant. Yoshi provides two teppanyaki counters at the end of the room and one semi-private teppanyaki counter just next to a private room overlooking the swimming pool, which can accommodate up to 12 people. The one-of-a kind semi-private tatami rooms are set up on each end of the restaurant. The dining room seats up to 100 people and is perfect for family, business or social gatherings. Yoshi is open

t is obvious that presentation plays an important part at Li Feng. Dining here, you will experience exquisite culinary delights where every dish is masterfully crafted to bring you delicious and visually stunning delicacies with a surprising modern twist. Upon entering the restaurant, we can tell that we are in for something far more than simply ordinary. Designed by Hong Kong-based LRF Designers Limited, the restaurant’s interior is inspired by the historic voyages and spice trade between China and old Jakarta, Batavia – when ocean-going junks plied the route between the southern China coast and the Spice Islands, as well as Jakarta and onwards to Arabia. The junk connection has been incorporated into the glass

art, paintings and the ceiling light sculpture, which is a stylized “sea” of hand-made crystal glass, with amber crystal junk sails plying their route across the waves. The contemporary ceiling light sculpture and three chandeliers were developed and fabricated by the much-vaunted Czech crystal sculptors Lasvit. The restaurant also features “A Voyage of the South” artwork, a large-gilded glass piece by artist Helen Poon from Hong Kong that features an ancient etched and gilded map of Asia drawn up in 1602 by an Italian missionary named Matteo Ricci, illustrating the ancient connection between China and Jakarta. As we look at the menu, the attention to detail at Li Feng is obvious. It is one of the most beautiful menus I have ever seen in a Chinese restaurant, a

work of art in itself. Helmed by two talented chefs, Chef Fei and Chef Loy, Li Feng’s menu presents a scrumptious blend of traditional dishes and a creative rendition of classics. The menu features a variety of Cantonese specialties. We decide to try the chef’s recommendations, which of course include the beautifully presented Deep-Fried Swan Dumpling with Black Pepper Duck Meat that is the “talk of the town” and tastes as good as it looks. We also try some of the other delicious dumplings on the menu, such as the Squid Ink, Seafood and Fish Roe dumplings. For soup, I truly recommend the Imperial Kung Fu Soup, which once again is delightfully presented and taste superb. For the main course, my personal favourites are the Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pineapple and Bell Pepper and the Braised Hele Crab with Japanese Rice in Hoisin Sauce. Meat lovers must try the Sautéed Beef with Szechuan Pepper and Chilli, which is so tender and full of flavour. All the food at Li Feng is so full of flavour and visually stunning. Talking about all this delicious food, it is only fair to look at the two talented chefs behind Li Feng, Chef Fei and Chef Loy. Chef Fei, one of China’s most notable young chefs, is also the man behind the celebrated Jiang at Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou. Hailing from Chaozhou in Guangdong province, Chef Fei began
his career at the age of 16, honing his skills in Chinese specialty restaurants and mastering all aspects of Cantonese cuisine. With an impeccable eye for detail, Chef Fei’s innovative creations have won him numerous awards – including The Best Chef in China 2016 – and a loyal following of food connoisseurs and celebrities alike in Guangdong. Having started his culinary career in Singapore, Chef Loy, the Executive Chinese Chef at Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, brings more than 12 years of experience in fine-dining restaurants in various destinations including Bali and Dubai, to the refined atmosphere of Li Feng. The Hong Kong New Year Fireworks and Countdown celebration is one of the most anticipated events every year. Imagine the city’s dramatic skyline lit up with a display of fireworks that grows more impressive every year, as the radiant Victoria Harbour becomes the belle of the ball for Hong Kong’s spectacular New Year countdown. Expect a fun-filled party atmosphere with a dazzling finale: a pyrotechnic dragon that dances across the sky. The events kick off in Hong Kong’s Times Square shopping mall, where a replica ball drop takes place in homage to New York City’s famous festivities.
