EDITOR’S LETTER
When Two Become One Love is a burning desire, That makes your heart light on fire, Love is being with you, Someone saying I love you too, Love is your tender kiss, Something you don’t want to miss, Love is you and me, And that is all I see.
It has been said that every girl has her own vision of a dream wedding. Your wedding is meant to be a day you will always remember, as you vow to spend the rest of your life with that special someone, to cherish each other in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, till death do you part. A dream wedding can be an intimate affair with relatives and close friends, or it might be an extravagant party to celebrate the special day. Whatever your dream wedding looks like, it will take a lot of planning to make it reality. One of the most important steps in planning a wedding is finding the perfect dress, a daunting task that can turn wedding dreams into nightmares. So instead of finding the dress, why not let the dress find you? We present three of the most inspiring and talented designers, who will help turn your dream dress into reality in “Inspiring Person.” After spending months planning the perfect wedding, you want the memories to linger for a lifetime. That’s why choosing the right wedding photographer is so impor-
tant, and why we feature Indonesia’s best photographers in “Lights, Camera, Action.” Thanks to the power and reach of social media, extravagant pre-wedding photo shoots are becoming the hottest trend for brides and grooms. Couples are spending exuberant amounts to capture their life and relationship together before they tie the knot. Learn the tips and tricks for making your pre-wedding photo shoot the moment of a lifetime in “Capturing the Love in a Snap.” Your wedding is finally over and now it is time to relax and enjoy your first days as a couple before real life intrudes. A honeymoon is this wonderful grace period between the fantasy of your wedding day and the reality of simply being an old married couple. It gives newlyweds the chance to recover from the pressure and absolute bedlam that often surrounds wedding preparations, and lets them spend a few much-needed days alone as husband and wife before jumping back into jobs, family and everything else that makes up life. It is a time to luxuriate in the newness of coupledom.
Of course, all that being said, a honeymoon is also the perfect excuse to embark on the holiday of your life. Just like a wedding, perfect honeymoons don’t just happen; they have to be carefully planned. But that doesn’t mean it has to be a stressful affair. If you need a little help, “Just the Two of Us” is filled with gorgeous honeymoon destinations. Planning a wedding might not always be easy, but as you exchange your vows, gazing into each other’s eyes, and you realize that you have finally found the one and that your new life has just begun, it will all be worth it because your dreams have come true. As a flower blossoms with hope anew, I wish you the same for your married life – a fresh start to eternal bliss, side by side with the one you love.

In Every Girl Is a Princess
When I was a little girl, I dreamed one day I’d fall in love and get married! So now that I am about to be a bride, I want you to be my flower girl. Every bride has her own ideas about what she wants her flower girl to do. Once the flower girl has walked down the aisle, her main duties are looking adorable and starring in the wedding photos. One of the most important things you can do for your flower girl is help her feel special. When it comes to getting ready for the ceremony itself, understand that your flower girl might be quite nervous. For this reason, it’s a good idea to rehearse as much as possible so she can be relaxed and confident. A good strategy is to have her parents, a bridesmaid or another trusted relative at the front of the crowd to help her find her way if she freezes come the special moment. Remember, if all else fails, relax and have a giggle. No matter what, your flower girl will be an adorable addition to your ceremony – even if she goes a little off course on her way down the aisle. Before you get carried away with the look of your flower girl dresses, here are some practical aspects to consider: • Make sure she’s comfortable in whichever outfit you end up choosing and that it’s appropriate for her height and size, as you don’t want a long dress tripping her down the aisle! •
Floor-length dresses are very pretty but if your flower girl isn’t used to them she may end up tripping down the aisle proceeding. Consider a tea-length dress or simply have the hem turned up a little.
•
Check the material you have chosen to make sure it won’t be itchy or irritating to the skin, and that it’s not too heavy for your flower girl to wear all day.
•
Make sure your flower girl has a pretty cardigan that complements her dress to slip on when it gets cold.
•
Keep flower girl shoes flat and simple so she is comfortable. Slip-on pumps or white sandals are great.
•
Ask your flower girl’s parents to make sure she is wearing white underwear on the day. Her pink puppy dog knickers might be her favourite but you don’t want them to star in your wedding photos. If you want her to wear tights make sure there is a spare pair on hand in case of ladders or snags.

Hey men, body-care rituals aren’t just for women ahead of the wedding. So go show your new wife just how well you clean up. Text by Hanafie Akhmad | Photo by Reo Sinarta of Noir Photography +62 8785 3038 889 | Stylist: AJ Model: Maxx from Hitz Indonesia
Imagine this, guys. It’s your wedding night, just you and your new wife, the lights are low, the mood is romantic, and you take off your shirt and she … turns away in disgust. That’s certainly not the wedding night you imagined. All you grooms-to-be need to put some thought into taking care of yourself and getting ready for the big night. It’s not difficult, it just takes a little bit of time and knowing what you can do to make sure your wedding night is one she will remember, and in a good way. What is required for the prospective bridegroom? Maxx-Brides has some helpful tips for you.
Research has shown that smoking destroys collagen, making your skin age more rapidly. FACIAL
SKIN CARE Start thinking about a regular skincare routine long before the big day to make sure you look your best. This needn’t be time consuming or overly involved. Here are our top tips: Drink plenty of water during the day (up to eight glasses) to prevent dehydration and to assist in the elimination of toxins from the body, which helps reduce spots. Cleanse your skin thoroughly every day, using either a cream or warm water and a mild facial wash. Pat your face dry and avoid pulling the fine skin around your eyes. Shave after a shower or bath as this leaves the bristles soft and easier to cut. Never use a razor blade more than five times. A blunt blade will cause irritation. After shaving, use a moisturiser that incorporates a sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of at least 15. This will protect your skin from the drying effects of the wind and ultraviolet light from the sun. It is widely believed that the ageing of skin can be significantly delayed by the daily use of SPF15 sunscreen. During your morning routine, massage your face and neck with your fingertips to stimulate circulation and boost overall skin tone.Avoid touching your face too much during the day as this can spread bacteria from your hands. Squeezing blemishes can cause scarring. If you smoke, try stopping!
For those of you who can find the time, or perhaps just enjoy being pampered, a facial at your local salon or spa, many of which now cater for men, may be the answer. It is advisable to get a facial at least one month before the wedding and then again a few days before. Your skin is cleansed and scrubbed to lift any dirt and dead skin cells from your face, then it is softened with hot towels or steam. A mask is then applied that will cleanse deep into the opened pores; it is then rinsed off with cold water, closing the pores and leaving you with a clean, fresh and glowing complexion. Don’t worry if you come out in spots after the first visit, this is just your body getting rid of the unwanted toxins. A thorough wet shave on the morning of the wedding will ensure smooth skin for the entire day. For the best result, start by splashing your face with hot water to open up the pores and make your skin more supple. Then apply the shaving foam to ensure it works its way into the pores. Once the foam is applied leave it on for a minute to let it soak in. When shaving, it is important to apply strokes in the direction of hair growth, particularly on the neck, which is often more sensitive than your face. Begin shaving along your jaw line and cheeks, followed by the neck, around the mouth and then the chin. Afterwards, rinse your face with cold water to close the pores and then apply a good moisturising lotion. If you take your time to shave properly you shouldn’t cut
yourself, but if you do, press cotton wool soaked in cold water onto the cut. The pressure will stop the bleeding and the cold water will help close the cut and stop the bleeding within a minute or two. HAIR CARE If you don’t normally pay much attention to your hair then this is the time to start. Firstly, think about the style then get a good cut about a month before the wedding day, followed by a trim at least a week before; this will leave enough time for the cut to settle. To get your hair into good condition use a good shampoo – one that suits your hair type – and a moisturising conditioner, which will give it added shine. On the big day, once washed and styled, use a light hairspray or gel – no one will know and your style will stay in place all day. Alternatively, for heads that will be crowned with a hat, use a soft wax to hold your hair style, as it is malleable enough to allow you to just push it back into place afterwards. HAND CARE Signing the register, exchanging rings and lots of handshaking puts your hands on full display throughout the day so they really need to be paid some attention to. For a simple home treatment simply push back the cuticles with a towel after every wash and apply hand cream whenever you remember. However, for those of you who have rough hands or untidy nails a proper manicure might be the answer: nails are cleaned and filed and then both hands are exfoliated, deep cleansed if necessary and moisturised, leaving them smooth and soft.

Look of Love Beauty Treatments for Your Wedding Day Every bride wants to look and feel like the most beautiful version of herself on her wedding day. We show you some must-try beauty treatments for your special day. To look and feel your best on your wedding day, we have rounded up some beauty tips and treatments to help you absolutely glow on your special day. Teeth Whitening You’re sure to do a lot of smiling on your wedding day, so if you’d like your pearly grin to look its gorgeous best, try professional teeth whitening. This procedure is instantly gratifying. The dentist will paint a high concentration of peroxide gel onto your teeth and supervise its progress in 20-minute intervals for up to an hour. In just one session, your teeth will become several shades closer to pearl than peach. Facial Every bride will benefit from having regular facial treatments. For maximum results, facials should be enjoyed every four to six weeks. It is advisable to begin having treatments six to 12 months before your wedding date. Go for a really intensive course of facials two months before focusing on lymphatic drainage, skin tone and radiance. Facials are beneficial because they deeply cleanse the skin, boost circulation, are hydrating and help to bring skin to its natural balance. However, do not have your final facial too close to the big day – about 12 to 14 days before is advisable, to allow your complexion to settle. Skincare Make sure you have a good skincare regime, especially in the weeks prior to your wed-
ding. An effective skincare routine should make your skin look and feel healthy. Make sure you cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin twice a day (morning and evening) and ensure all makeup is completely removed at night to prevent clogged pores. Body Brushing Exfoliating your skin regularly is one of the best things you can do for your complexion as it encourages cell regeneration, which results in brighter looking skin. Dry body brushing is a simple and effective way to beautify the body, especially before your wedding day. It not only boosts circulation, which will help skin radiate and glow, but it also reduces cellulite and aids lymphatic drainage, which is an effective ways to eliminate toxins from the body. Dry body brushing can be done daily for five to 10 minutes. Use firm, long strokes in the direction of your heart, starting from the soles of your feet, and you’ll be left feeling as smooth as a baby. Eyebrow Shape Perfect brows will emphasise the bride’s features for her special day, so it’s worth booking in for a brow shape before your wedding. Ideally, brow shaping should be done on a regular basis (every four to six weeks). If you have never had your brows professionally shaped, you should do it about three to six months before your wedding to ensure you achieve the ideal brow shape in time for your big day. Your final brow shape
should be done about five to seven days before your wedding to make sure any redness or irritation has cleared. Massage There are so many reasons why massage is such a great beauty treatment. Massage helps to calm you and it eases stress, which is ideal in the build-up to your wedding day. A stress-free mind not only brings peace to your day, but also brings out the best in your skin. Massage also boosts circulation, which helps nourish the skin and gives you a healthy bridal glow. Massage treatments should usually be carried out on a monthly basis, but if your wedding has eaten away your budget, then opt for just one massage about a week before the big day. Manicures and Pedicures Regular manicures and pedicures are a great way to get your hands and feet in tip-top condition. Hands in particular are a focal point of your wedding day and you will want them to look good in any close-up photos of your ring. Manicures and pedicures are deeply hydrating and can improve skin and nail condition, so consider booking an appointment in the weeks running up to the big day. Your final manicure or pedicure treatment should be done a day or two before your big day, but remember to apply cuticle oil daily to keep nails hydrated.

POST WEDDING RITUAL Five-star pampering at Bimasena Spa After months of hectic preparations, the wedding is finally over. It is time for the bride and groom to enjoy each other’s company as they embark on their journey of love and commitment. While most couples, especially the bride, usually indulge in spa treatments prior to the wedding, post-wedding rituals are a good way for the bride and groom to relax and unwind and leave all the stress behind. MAXX-Brides talked to Listya Suhita, the Spa Manager at Bimasena Spa, about the importance of post-wedding spa treatments. Listya said that after all the stress of preparing for the wedding, couples need to unwind, relax and refresh. And couples will likely enjoy a post-wedding spa treatment even more as they are no longer under pressure.
Listya recommends the Spa Sampler for Couples as the perfect post-wedding ritual. This 2.5-hour spa ritual in a private suite starts with a body polish to remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin soft, smooth and moist. Next is the hydrotherapy treatment, which relieves anxiety and tension through the application of warm water at different pressures. This is followed by the Bimasena Signature Massage, a deep-tissue massage that alters the mental state, calms the nerves and stimulates the immune system. This is a particularly effective treatment for individuals with low energy levels, poor circulation and fatigue. The ritual ends with a choice of manicure or pedicure. Bimasena Spa in South Jakarta is an oasis of serenity where you can restore your senses and emerge rejuvenated. At Bimasena, you will be taken on a journey to physical and mental wellness. Specializing in aromatherapy, the spa provides both ethnic Indo-
nesian and contemporary service. Indulge yourself with the spa’s health and beauty treatments; pamper your body with relaxing massages, stimulating hydrotherapy and soothing facials. MUST-TRY TREATMENTS A spa treatment is one of many things on the to-do list for many brides, whether it be to look their best on the wedding day or to escape the pressure of preparing a wedding. These are highly recommended treatments.
Slimming Treatment at Le Spa This treatment is ideal for people who want a combination of relaxation and slimming. It starts with a lymphatic massage of the legs combined with tapping and rolling movements, as the skin is detoxified and toned though the application of suction pads. This incredible treatment will reduce the appearance of cellulite as well as tackle fluid retention in the stomach and legs. After the slimming massage, a green tea and kelp wrap is applied for 30 minutes to activate the cells’ metabolism, leading to a visible and measurable inch loss after just a few sessions. While waiting for the wrap, the therapist will give an expert foot and scalp messages for a total relaxation that enables the skin
to rediscover its suppleness and firmness. For a visible result, a series of treatments is required. Le Spa at Le Meridien Jakarta Jl. Jendral Sudirman Kav. 18-20, Jakarta – Indonesia Phone. +62 21 251 3131 www.lemeridien.com/Jakarta Golden Caviar Facial at Bimasena Spa I tried this 75-minute facial and the result was immediate and noticeable. I could feel that my skin was more moist after the treatment, but I didn’t realize that the result was noticeable until a few people commented on my skin. I wondered what I’d done differently and then realized that I had the facial. The caviar extract used for the facial
activates skin cell metabolism and the skin’s microcirculation, reducing lines and wrinkles. The extract promotes the skin’s ability to bind moisture and balances the moisture level, making the skin appear radiant. You can see the results immediately after the treatment. This is definitely must-try treatment. The Bimasena Spa Grha Bimasena, 3rd Floor, Jl. Love Stones Love comes in many forms, just like precious stones come in many shapes, colours and sizes. Here are the most popular precious stones and their meaning. Blue Sapphire The most popular sapphire is the blue sapphire, which is known for its medium to deep blue colour and strong saturation. Sapphire means ‘blue stone’ in Greek. The finest sapphires are a strong blue, and amongst the most valueable are star sapphires. The sapphire was called the ‘Stone of Destiny’. Sapphires are said to contribute to mental clarity and perception, and promote financial rewards. The sapphire is also a symbol of heaven and joyful devotion to God.
Gold Gold jewellery is the most popular fashion accessory and lifestyle piece and can be worn daily to define your personal style. Most gold jewellery is appropriate whether you are going casual or are dressed to the nines. Gold jewellery is versatile and wearable day or night. Gold is associated with the sun, which is a symbol of happiness, success, attainment, prosperity and true friends. Obstacles fall away in the light of joy. It brightens all things, adding a sense of optimism and good cheer.
Diamond Diamond, in its rarity and beauty, is a symbol of purity and innocence, of love and fidelity, and embraces strength of character, ethics, and faithfulness to oneself and others. It is indicative of the loving and open nature with which one came into the physical realm, and encourages the aspect of truth and trust. It is a love-bearing crystal, regarded in antiquity as dependable in its virtues only when received as a gift. Today the engagement ring, wedding ring, and other articles of jewelry symbolize the gift of persons in love. Though it is a gem of winter, the color of ice, Diamond is a crystal of Light; its high frequency energy is dispersed into flashing prisms of brilliant “fire” that typifies the sun. It is a spiritual stone, a symbol of perfection and illumination, activating the Crown and Etheric Chakras. It enhances inner vision and stimulates creativity, imagination, and ingenuity, opening the mind to the “new” and “possible.”
Ruby Rubies are known for their intense red colour. The fiery and captivating ruby is a stone of nobility, considered the most magnificent of all gems, the queen of stones and the stone of kings. Ancients believed it surpassed all other precious stones in virtue, and its value exceeded even that of the diamond. Rubies intimate the sensual pleasures of life. They stir the blood and stimulate the heart, encouraging one to enjoy being in the physical world. A ruby is said to increase desire and sexual energy, and may be used to activate the kundalini. Rubies have always been associated with love, especially faithful, passionate commitment and closeness. In antiquity, rubies were considered the perfect wedding stones.

Shoes for your Wedding Day Your wedding day is one of life’s unforgettable moments. For a perfect walk down the aisle every detail must be just so, from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. Photos by Lisa from Edward Suhadi Productions www.edwardsuhadi.com +62 21 569 62 552 Stylist: AJ | Model: Paulo from F Models International | Location: The Park Lane Jakarta Text by Melani Semuel | Bridal shoes by Jimmy Choo
Some people spend a whole year planning the perfect wedding and then settle on the first pair of shoes they see. Wearing the wrong shoes can make you miserable the whole day. On the other hand, wearing comfortable shoes will brighten your smile. You need stylish shoes that will perform perfectly walking down the aisle, mingling with guests and dancing with your spouse. The perfect pair of wedding shoes will help you feel like a fairy-tale princess on her wedding day. Make sure your shoes match the length of your gown or pants as well as your wedding theme. An important tip is to get shoes a half size bigger than usual for the wedding day; the reason is that your feet can swell up from standing so long, so be prepared. It will take time going from shop to shop, boutique to boutique, but it will be well worth the investment in time and money in the end. So don’t panic and just follow the steps below: 1. Start with a foot treatment like a foot massage, paraffin treatment or a pedicure. Make sure your skin and toenails look adorable. 2. For the bride, matching your silk or satin gown to satin shoes or strap sandals is the best. 3. Matching your tulle and silk chiffon gown to crepe or silk shoes works well. 4. Check out the heel heights that you can tolerate – from slippers to proper high heels. 5. A very high heel will give you a sexy feeling, medium heels give the same lovely line but with a gentler lift, and flats are graceful and feminine. 6. Fabric shoes in materials such as lace, velvet, satin or silk tend to be more feminine, sweet and elegant looking. While leather and suede fabrics will give a bold and offbeat effect.
7. If you are having an outdoor wedding party, choose a more durable fabric, since light fabrics such as silk and satin can tear easily. 8. If you are wearing a more casual dress, you have to wear casual shoes or sandals, such as a ballet slipper or low-heeled sandals. 9. Choose the main focus of the shoes that can match your dress and headpiece, such as jewellery with diamonds, rhinestones, beads, stones or pearls. 10. For the groom, matching your formal wool suit with leather shoes is ideal. 11. If the party is outdoors and the groom decides to wear cotton or rayon pants, choose leather informal strap sandals. 12. Match up the colours of your shoes or sandals with your dress or suit. 13. Buy comfortable shoes or sandals at least two weeks before the big day. Wear them around the house and get the feel of them. Choose shoes or sandals from designer collections or brands. Style and comfort are two different things; stylish does not mean comfortable and comfortable does not mean you get the hottest style. So have fun finding your perfect wedding shoes.

INDRA LEONARDI “Photography is general, but style is personal.” – Indra Leonardi Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Indra Leonardi Born to a family of photography enthusiasts, Indra Leonardi began his photography career with the family-owned King Foto Group. He then founded Leonardi Portraiture to channel his passion for portrait photography. Indra’s special strength is his ability to dig deep into the soul of his subjects. He engages them in friendly conversation to reveal their true personality, which he captures in beautiful portraitures.
At Leonardi Portraiture, the team strives to capture the emotions that define the moment. They look for those subtle expressions, the twinkle in the eye, the subdued smile of pride, the little signs that encapsulate your feelings. Signature Style Elegant and timeless, with a touch of modern and edginess. Favourite wedding photo My next couple. Role and responsibility of a wedding photographer To make and to capture something for the next generation. Tips on how to choose a wedding photographer First thing, the photographer should have chemistry with the client. We actually need to meet the client and talk about everything, so they can feel comfortable with the photographer. Because, at the end of the day, all the photos belong to the client. Important factors in producing great photos The concept, the preparation and all the things involved in it such as makeup, outfit, set-up, etc. And the most important thing is that we capture their personality and show their love story.
Advice for couples before taking their photos The most important thing is to not stress out and just enjoy the photo session. And the photographer must listen to the couple about what they want, what they like or do not like, so we can make adjustments according to their preferences. How to look good in front of a camera Enjoy yourself. The job of the photographer is to make sure the client doesn’t feel stiff or uncomfortable. And of course we have some techniques for posing, such as S curves and C curves, so we can get the best angle from the client. Tips to couples on working with photographers Firstly, couples need to meet the photographer beforehand. Couples must be comfortable with the photographer. And couples need to share what they want, their dreams and their expectations. They need to talk to the photographer and the photographer needs to talk to the couple about what is most suitable for them. So, both must be open.

AXIOO “Every day we step into AXIOO house feeling inspired – ignited by passion, fuelled by laughter, challenged by creativity. We find ourselves fascinated by the love stories and mesmerized by the twinkle of an eye, the sincerity of a smile and the miracle of a hug. It’s how we create the pages of captured moments.” Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of AXIOO
AXIOO is a team of passionate young people – photographers, videographers, designers, editors and stylists working together to create a masterpiece. Every photo shoot, be it wedding or pre-wedding, is a concerted effort of many talents. Signature Style We’re an out-of-the-box group of people who are open to pretty much anything. Our signature style is (most preferably) the couple’s chemistry. But if we had to choose one style we really love, that would be ‘Crazy Fun’! We don’t close our doors to other styles. The European-influenced, elegant and sophisticated style comes a close second. The most important thing a couple should think about when choosing a wedding photographer Trust is important. Chemistry is also important. If we could give a short word of advice to couples looking for wedding photographers, we’d say: choose one you click with, someone you feel comfortable talking to, someone you feel you can trust. Role and responsibility of a wedding photographer The main responsibility for a wedding photographer is to capture the day exactly as it went, along with the expressions of emotion that are scattered around that day. However, more than merely capturing moments, the job of a photographer includes creating moments. This is why it’s important to feel completely comfortable with your photographer, so that moments will be captured just as they are – sans the awkward smiles and frowning eyebrows. The most challenging aspect of being a wedding photographer The most challenging part is probably overcoming the difference in perception as to what is important. When we capture the day as it is, we try to have eyes and arms and legs on the ground as much as possible. But sometimes we run up against questions of priority. For example, we’re focussing on capturing the bride as she walks down the aisle to meet the groom. At that moment, we will also be working hard to capture as many raw emotions as we can – from the bride, the groom, the bridal party, the parents of the bride and groom, the guests. Then at the end of the day, the bride will ask us if we captured her long train. Uh-oh. Not that we didn’t think it was important, but we just thought there were more important things to capture. It is a challenge, but it can be solved by meeting with the bride and groom to talk this over. The best advice you’d give to any couple getting married Focus on the joys of getting married. Couples nowadays spend too much time planning their wedding and not enough time planning their marriage. A wedding is an event, but the marriage is the process; a long-term process that requires much more planning.
How important is it for the couple to spend time with their photographer before the wedding? Extremely important. And we don’t just say this because we’re photographers who crave attention. We think it’s important to talk about what’s important for the couple. When we talk to them we can sense what they would like or would not like during the biggest day of their lives. Pre-wedding photos Pre-wedding photos are great to relive love stories and to capture memories to be revisited later in life. Pre-wedding photos should be more than a set of pretty pictures – they should actually tell volumes of stories. A concept for a pre-wedding photo session is usually a product of brainstorming between the couple, the photographer and the stylists. On the day of the photo shoot, most of the time because of efficiency, we usually stick to the plan. However, we always allow room (a lot of room!) for improvisation. Because really, there’s no telling when love and chemistry is involved. For all we know, we could end up with thousands and thousands of great photos! Three things a couple should do before a pre-wedding session: 1. Tell your love story 2. Brainstorm with photographers and stylist on how to best capture your love story 3. The number of weddings you have photographed We can’t remember, but we have been in the business for 10 years and we are thankful for every year and every client. Signature style Pre-wedding – dramatic lighting and strong conceptual photos. Wedding – classic, elegant and dramatic. The most important thing when choosing a wedding photographer Chemistry; chemistry with the photographer and his work. The photos should reflect your personality. Do not choose a photographer because of some trend because that won’t last. The role and responsibility of a wedding photographer Capture moments that only happen once in a lifetime. The most challenging aspect of being a wedding photographer Every client is different and each client will normally have various unique demands. Our challenge is to meet those demands and capture the different moments in each wedding. Advice you’d give to any couple getting married Enjoy yourself during the wedding preparations, leave everything to the professionals and just be happy during the big day. Great photographs come from a happy couple. How important is it for couples to spend time with their photographer before the wedding? Getting to know your photographer and his style is important, and nothing works better than giving your photographer your complete trust. Pre-wedding photos Pre-wedding photos are not mandatory but they can make for memorable works of art. How important is the background? We always work with minimum space to create beautiful and artistic photographs, because we focus on mood, ambiance and concept rather than landscape. Our principle is that the couple must stand out more than the background and their accessories and clothes. What are the three things that couples should do before a wedding photo shoot? 1. Relax 2. Enjoy yourself 3. Trust your photographer How do you make a photo shoot happen? First, we get together with the couple and choose a team for the shoot. Two, we have intense meetings before the shoot. We create a schedule, mood board, find the wardrobe together, survey locations with the client and look for a makeup artist together. We normally recommend vendors such as the makeup artist and fashion designer after we agree on a concept, but of course the clients can decide for themselves depending on their own preference. On the day of the shoot there is usually a lot of improvisation, especially if the photo shoot is outdoors and we are at the mercy of the location and the weather. Improvisation makes for a better photograph than the original plan. Mario The Nine www.mariothenine.com Phone. +62 816 1675 805 +62 888 1891 984

MOIRE PHOTOGRAPHY “Moire Photography is a devoted and witty group of people who team up to embrace your wildest imagination.” Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Moire Photography
Moire Photography was founded in July 2009 by Maximilian John. With its home base in Surabaya, East Java, Maximilian gathered talented local people with one purpose, to spread happiness. Moire Photography believes that everyone deserve to be happy, especially during their golden moment. A snap here, a snap there, Moire Photography captures your most exquisite side and your character with ease. Maximilian and Christna Philip, tell us about their style and the work of a wedding photographer. Signature style Max: My style is always natural and casual. I love to laugh with the couple I shoot, so I really need to have a conversation with them before. I shoot it natural because I believe that something natural will last forever. Philip: I prefer a natural style that is elegant, romantic and sweet, with little jokes and laughter, because wedding photos should be even better and fresher 50 years from now. Favourite wedding photo Max: My favourite wedding photos are of Westernstyle weddings. I like something very natural, very letit-flow, so the emotions of the bride and the groom are captured in the photos. Philip: My favourite wedding photos are of Western-style weddings, something simple but full of meaning. Role and responsibility of a wedding photographer Max: People can do whatever they want in photography, so you can say there is no role at all. I shoot the way I love to shoot and (fortunately) people keep asking me to do what I like. I think it’s because the way I treat them, getting the photos they, and I, want. But then the responsibility of being a wedding photographer comes when you say you’re a professional photographer. You have to maintain the communication between you and your clients, maintain your quality, your service, teamwork, even the smallest parts of being a photographer such as managing the files. It’s the small things that make a difference. Philip: The role and responsibility of a wedding photographer is to make a beautiful photo, where we capture the moment and the expressions on the faces of the people, so the story of the wedding can be enjoyed through the photographs. Tips on how to choose wedding photographer • What is the personality of the photographer? Photography is personal and you don’t want to end up with someone rude or awkward shooting your wedding, no matter how good he or she is. • The photographer’s track record and style. No photographer can say what your event’s photos will look like exactly. So you have to look at their portfolio to determine if the photographer is appropriate for your style and personality. • And your budget.
Advice to a couple before taking their photos • Always be natural, be relaxed, be who you are, and always enjoy the moment. • There aren’t any special preparations. Just be relaxed, keep smiling, enjoy the photo session and consider your photographer as a friend. Tips on how to pose • Be confident. The best makeup a woman can wear is confidence. Leave the rest to us (the photographers) because we know that everyone has his or her own angle of beauty. • Imagine there is no camera and the world belongs just to the two you. The most challenging aspect of being a wedding photographer Max: We can’t miss a moment because you can’t redo it. Philip: We have to capture every special moment so the story can be conveyed forever. Three things that couples should do before a wedding photo shoot Max: Be natural, be relaxed, be yourself. Philip: Be confident, keep smiling, enjoy every moment. Tips for couples on working with photographers • Be open. We love to hear from you. We love to know who you are. • Don’t be shy, be yourself and tell me what you want for the wedding photo because we want to know more about you. Moire Photography Jl. Signature Style I love to shoot personal portraitures of the bride and groom. Just a simple background, with the bride, groom and the light. Although overseas wedding photos might sounds terrific, my personal favourite is a studio session wedding photo. Role and responsibility of a wedding photographer I think the role and responsibility is to be in the room, but make the bride and groom forget that you are in the same room. Capture the moment, but let them be themselves. Besides making the couple feel comfortable with the situation, I really concern myself with the light, either natural available light or the finest quality studio light. I think with the proper light, you can produce an amazing image. Tips for choosing a wedding photographer Choosing a wedding photographer may be as hard as choosing a life partner, because you have to feel the chemistry and sincerity before you say, “I do – want you to capture the best day of my life.” Don’t be in a rush
to make a choice; follow your heart. Advice for couples before taking photos I usually advise them to prepare their wardrobe with our stylist and of course to get a good beauty sleep before the day, because a happy and fit couple is the most enjoyable couple to shoot. How to look good in front of a camera Actually I’m not crazy about posing. I’d rather capture their candid moments and maybe just a little bit of, “Ok, chin up, chin down, hands to the cheek, and kiss. …” And it’s my job as the photographer to find the best angle for the couple, so they will look good with no worries. Tips to couples on working with photographers Eat well, get a good sleep and trust the photographer. The best collaboration is the one with trust in it. Just enjoy every minute. Choosing the theme To choose the best theme for both the prewedding and wedding photos, it is best for
the couple and the photographer to work together. I really want the photos to reflect the couple’s true personality. The couple can tell us what style they like, and then we can come up with the concept together and find the perfect location for the shoot. Preparation I never force clients to hire a particular makeup artist of designer, but I do give some tips on how to choose a suitable wardrobe and also give them some recommendations on makeup artists and designers, but at the end of the day it is their decision. Before the photoshoot, I always arrange a technical meeting with all the parties involved (not just the couple but also the makeup artist, the fashion designer and stylist). What I love most about House of Lea is the whole concept, from the gown to the makeup and accessories. It is clear that every detail has been taken into serious consideration. Because everyone at House of Lea is a perfectionist, you can be sure that you will not walk out the door until you look absolute best. According to Lea, beauty is the hairstyle, makeup and the clothing. It is the total package and everything must be perfect for the occasion. Lea’s personal style is simple elegant. It is a gown with every detail just so, with just a little bit of Swarovski for the final touch. When designing a wedding gown, Lea gets her inspiration from many sources, mixed in with the preferences and character of the customer. Lea believes that there is a perfect dress for everyone. To create a wedding gown, Lea suggests a minimum of three to six months, depending on the model and material of the gown. But the ideal period to prepare a customised gown is 12 months. Tips for Choosing the Right Wedding Gown The first thing you have to know when choosing any gown is your body type. It is essential when choosing a gown to accentuate your best assets and to cover any weaknesses in your figure. Here is a simple guide for choosing the perfect gown for your body type. Curvy: Look beautiful in a mermaid dress. Petite: An A-line dress or ball gown with light material is the perfect match for this body shape. Beauty for Mee Djin is a combination of persona and the inner beauty that is just as important if not more important than outer beauty. Every woman is physically different, with flaws and assets. What makes Mee Djin Couture so special is that its gowns can take a woman’s flaws and turn them into something beautiful. Each gown reflects the client’s personality and is specifically designed to suit the client’s character. Mee Djin graduated from Haagse School voor Mode en Kleding, Netherlands. When Mee Djin designs a gown, she looks into the woman’s character and body type, and from there she draws the inspiration to design a gown specifically for that women. The most extravagant gown that Mee Djin has designed is one with embroidery, the fabric sewn partially into small pieces and then the pieces clustered into a gown. For Natalia, the most challenging part of being a designer is ensuring the client is absolutely comfortable with the design she has proposed. “People sometimes have a different perspective on how they define a gorgeous gown. And designers have a different perspective as well,” she says. “As a fashion designer, I might give my gowns different characteristics. But I have to be able to design according to the wants of my customers, while still leaving my style on every design I do.” Natalia’s most extravagant designs are those she did for the 2013 Miss World pageant. She designed gowns for three contestants – Miss Ireland, Miss Greece and Miss Namibia. Many people loved Miss Ireland’s dress, which had the strongest character of the gowns. Natalia added a touch of Indonesia with songket and gave the gowns glitter with Swarovski crystals. Tips for choosing a wedding gown: Curvy: An empire-style waist is the way to go for curvy shapes, combined with a tempered floorlength A-line skirt. Petite: Creating the illusion of a longer lower half of the body is the way to go. I recommend a trumpet gown or an empire-style waist. Athletic: For this body type, I aim to create the illusion of womanly curves. A belted waist with cowl bust help to shape up the body. Mermaid-style works best. A true soulmate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Couples who are close or intimate are those who are able to develop a balance between togetherness and separateness from one another. They are able to share time and feelings and make their relationship a priority. Comfortable Communicating The meaning of communication is when couples are able to share their beliefs and dreams. Couples who are able to communicate with each other are those who are able listen and talk openly and honestly with each other. Spiritual Happiness You know the person is the right mate when he or she supports your career and intellectual development. The right person wants a partner who is independent and happy. The right person will not be envious of you or try to embarrass you, will not be selfish, negative or constantly critical. Mutual Understanding and Compromise Finding a soulmate is all about discovering your partner’s ability to overcome the difficulties and differences that occur between the two of you. If it is the right mate then any problem can be solved by cooperation and compromise. However, you need to worry if your partner reacts to trouble with emotional outbursts or by pretending there is no problem. The way couples handle disputes and conflicts shows the level of psychological maturity so important to a lasting, harmonious and romantic relationship. The right future wife or husband is not a vengeful person and is willing to forgive a partner who does wrong. Honesty and Trust The right mate must have honesty, respect and trust. When you feel like a detective in a relationship, it is a sign that something is wrong. A relationship must be based on honesty and trust. Even if the whole world is against your partner, you have to stand together.
A BITE OF LOVE

Sweets and cakes … who doesn’t love them? No matter how you slice and dice it, food and love are inextricably tied. The pleasure of food is the sensation of wellbeing that comes from fulfilling a natural instinct. Two important elements in the pleasure of food are the emotional and psychological tension created by the initial impulse or desire and the subsequent consummation of that inner need. The pleasure of eating corresponds with two basic requirements of life – replication and sustenance. The Dharmawangsa Jakarta takes great care to serve dishes that are unique and artistically presented to satisfy all the senses. The look, the aroma, the taste, they all come together in a glorious symphony that food lovers find impossible to resist. Food pleases all our senses. It refreshes and delights us. And it is love at first sight with the delightful treats whipped up by the chefs at The Dharmawangsa Jakarta. These sweet treasures are pure pleasure for the eyes and the taste buds.

Be My Guest Making a list of people to invite to your wedding can be a challenge. Here are some tips to create your dream guest list. Invitation by NAB Classic | Text by A.J. Photo by Lisa from Edward Suhadi Productions (+62 21 5696 2552) Deciding who to invite to your wedding can seem almost as momentous as deciding who to marry. It’s tempting to invite everyone you’ve ever met. Tempting, but not the best move. Winnowing down your invite list can be stressful and it involves a lot of people’s feelings, but it must be done. Here are some guidelines for building your wedding guest list: •
Start with an idea of how large a wedding you want. Is your dream an intimate wedding on the beach with 20 of your closest family and friends, or do you want a big festive party in the grand ballroom of a five-star hotel?
•
Create a master guest list. The bride and groom should sit down with their parents and work out one final master list.
•
It’s time to edit the list down to fit your wedding concept and budget. Divide it into must-invites, should-invites and could-invites. Invite family first and make sure the people most important to you, your betrothed and your parents receive invitations.
•
Friends whose names you are able to rattle off without thinking are clearly must-invites.
•
Don’t feel obligated to invite co-workers.
•
Determining whether to invite children can be tough. Before you make the decision, consider the type of wedding you are having. If it’s a blacktie affair and your reception begins in the evening, you may have to deal with a few meltdowns as children become tired. If you’re having a casual garden wedding in the early afternoon and your motto is the more the merrier, by all means, invite children.
•
Out-of-town guests. Assume that 50 per cent of those you invite will indeed say they’ll be there.

Kiss From a Rose “Love is like a rose; blinded by its beauty you overlook the thorns.” Rose bouquets by Steve Décor | Photos by Agam Oetomo | Text by A.J. Beautiful and subtle pink roses represent elegance. Traditionally, pink roses have represented femininity and refinement. However, more and more men are viewing pink roses as a symbolic invitation to relish their own sensitivity.
Purple roses are exotic and striking, soft and sweet. They represent pride, dignity and admiration. Purple roses have a wonderful ethereal quality to them, which sends the clear message of love at first sight. Purple roses have a reputation for being magical, originating in another world altogether. This is a perfect description the feeling of love at first sight. Purple roses reveal creativity, openness and infinite possibility.
The rich and lustrous rose is a dignified and romantic messenger of love’s gladness. For centuries the beautiful and mysterious rose has communicated messages of love, fidelity, excitement and unbound passion. Because the rose is such a willing participant in love’s many escapades, different colours and varieties have taken on symbolic meanings. The rose speaks of love silently, in a language known only to the heart. White roses are stunning simplicity, said to represent the characteristics of innocence, purity and humility. The white rose communicates a secret promise between the giver and the recipient. White roses are often used at weddings to symbolize love’s fidelity and promise. A bouquet of white roses and baby’s breath is a wonderful combination of innocence and elegance. It makes a clear promise to care, nurture and adore. The white rose is a promise that your lives together will be full of equality and joy.

The garden of love is green without limit and yields many fruits other than sorrow or joy. Love is beyond either condition: without spring, without autumn, it is always fresh. – Rumi For more than a century the garden has been a special ingredient of the landscape, and a personal sanctuary for colourists. But always, the lure of the garden has been in the colours produced in nature and affected by sunlight. With sprays of flowers, the garden has served admirably as a visual banquet of beauty. With the magic of a beautiful garden, there is no wonder gardens are such a popular setting for wedding receptions. Just imagine having your first meal as husband and
wife surrounded by family and friends, hosted by Mother Nature. Imagine being surrounded by green leaves and colourful flowers, the clear blue sky welcoming you as husband and wife, a choir of birds wishing you a joyful life. Incorporate a garden theme into your decorations with fresh flowers for your centrepiece. Add a dash of colour to your big day with flowers.

In this world, relationships are fraught with danger and love does not always have a happy ending. Selfishness and stupidity take their toll and couples end up arguing and fighting, forgetting what it was that made them fall in love in the first place. That is why Masmuin Kuntjoro and his wife, Murni Tjandra, are such an inspiration. After 65 years of marriage they are still laughing, feeling blessed, completing each other’s lives and falling in love. Watching this couple keep the flame of love alive in their golden years is an inspiration for lovers everywhere.
Love at first sight Surabaya, 1949 He met her the first time in Surabaya. She was pretty and shy, with thick black hair and soft eyes. They came from different worlds. Her father was from a wealthy family and he helped run his father’s small textile shop, but it was love at first sight. He could not stop thinking of her after their eyes first met for what seemed like an eternity.
They began meeting each other more and more and became good friends. As he learned more about her, he realized that she was exactly the person he wanted to be with and much more. She was beyond an inspiration. She was intelligent, confident, strong of spirit, passionate and, most of all, she inspired him to greatness, She was his dream. She made him who he is. When he fell in love with her it changed him forever and that feeling has never gone away. He married her in 1946 and he is still in love with her, always and always until forever. Masmuin Kuntjoro and Murni Tjandra share some lessons they have learned from their 65 years as husband and wife on how to nurture a love and keep it strong. •
It’s not that happy couples never argue. Most couples have disagreements. But in a mature relationship, you “do not make a tempest in a tea cup”, which means not to make a small problem seem like a big problem. You need to know how to discuss differences fully and honestly. You need to build a stronger and more loving relationship. Successful couples know how
•

to argue with class and dignity. They may disagree, but in the end, they end up understanding and respecting their differences. Learn how to agree to disagree. No two people agree on everything, but it’s important to be okay with each other’s differences. Respect, support and communicate with each other, be faithful, honest and truly love each other with all of your heart. Know your husband/ wife’s dreams and plans. Murni Tjandra supported her husband as he built Viva cosmetics into one of the most powerful brands in Indonesia. When you go to bed at night, it doesn’t matter how angry or sad you are, you don’t have to say anything but you always, always touch toes. Just a little reminder that I’m here and I still love you no matter what. Believe that everyone has a soulmate they can spend the rest of their life with. Love is patient, love is kind. You give and you give and you give. Passion or lust? After six decades of married life, it’s not real anymore.

Marriage is not only making a promise or commitment. When two souls become one, you promise to be true, in good times and in bad, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. You will love and honour each other, grow together as one, have faith in your journey together through all the changes that will come, share your lives, and may a rainbow be certain to follow each rain. We always hold hands.
Hopefully, these love tips from Masmuin Kuntjoro and Murni Tjandra will inspire newlyweds. As John Lennon sang in Grow Old With Me: “Grow old along with me/The best is yet to be/When our time has come/ We will be as one/God bless our love.”

One Fine Day Devi and Thomas fell in love with their wedding venue at first sight. Upon setting foot in Tirtha Bridal, Bali, the couple knew this was the place they wanted to get married.
Devi and Thomas’s love story began in January 2012. They met through mutual friends and after two and half years together, they got married in May of this year. Devi and Thomas chose Tirtha Bridal because it has an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world. “It was love at first sight! We knew right away that we would get married there,” Devi said. Loving a classic and simple style, they combined the glassy modern look of Tirtha’s chapel with natural touches such as wild flowers, cacti and roses. They specifically requested that every corner of the venue feature a personal touch such as candles in a glass pot accompanied by a cactus or sea stars. This couple is all about attention to detail. Their elegant and simple style also shone through in their wedding cake and wedding attire, with Devi wearing an elegant, classic beaded mermaid gown with wonderful touches of embroidery from Indonesian
designer Billy Tjong. Thomas, consistent with his classic style, chose a timeless greyish suit that fit him flawlessly from Danish fashion brand Sand. The whole appearance was all the more perfect with their traditional style wedding rings designed by Devi’s father. Devi and Thomas let their natural style shine through in the wedding, even as they tried to incorporate cultural heritagesinto the wedding. “Yes, we tried, but only the parts that worked for us as a couple, and we skipped all the crazy, weird parts,” Thomas said with a laugh. Joined by 60 guests, exotic Balinese dance entertainment and Asian meet West fusion dishes, they truly feel the wedding was as perfect as they had imagined. “We got more than we expected,” the couple said with a smile.

The couple started off as colleagues working at the same company in early 2010. Similar interests and late nights at work brought the fun-loving couple closer before they decided to take their friendship a step further. The couple started dating in October 2010. Andrew popped the question in the middle of a park littered with orange leaves at Grosvenor Square in London on 3 October 2013, before their lunch reservation at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze. A grand engagement celebration in the Grand Ballroom of Hotel Mulia, Jakarta was held on 25 August 2014. The Jakarta affair took on the theme of chinoiserie and was attended by about 2,000 well-heeled guests. There are a number of things that the couple loved most about their wedding, including the chinoiserie theme carried through every single touchpoint of the celebration, from the invitations to the dÊcor to the dress to the entertainment in the foyer of the ballroom to the wedding favours. Then there was the beautiful and unique wedding dress that made Liz felt like a Spanish princess, and the makeup artist, Donny Liem, who was an absolute magician. And perhaps best of all was the photography and videography that captured every single minute of the momentous occasion.

Marry You Hemant and Divya tied the knot at Conrad Resort and Spa in Bali in a spectacular three-day event on 3 to 5 July 2014. Divya first saw Hemant in 1994 when she was just 7 and he was 11, at the Indian Cultural Evening at South Island School. Faith brought them back together in 2010 and their love bloomed. Hemant said, “It was a lot of fun getting to know Divya over the next two years, going for hikes, concerts, camping trips, numerous late nights in Lan Kwai Fong and, of course, over the many, many meals we had together! We clearly shared a lot more interests than I knew. I don’t think there were many weekends that we didn’t see each other.” “Three years into our relationship, Hemant and I had gotten to know and understand each other pretty well, so well in fact, that Hemant could tell how I was feeling based on my shoulder movements,” said Divya. “From being someone I could see my life with, he became someone I couldn’t see my life without.” On 28 November 2013, at The Capella Hotel in Sentosa, Singapore, Hemant surprised Divya with a dinner and, at the end of the night, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

6 Things That Every Couple Should Know About Sex
“It takes a lot more than sex to build a strong marriage, but it’s impossible to build a strong marriage without it!” Text by A.J. | Photo by Mario The Nine (+62 816 1675 805) Male’s wardrobe by Priyo Octaviano, Femal’s wardrobe by Mel Ahyar Models: Zeus from TwentyOneMM and Angie from F Models International | Location: Shangrila Jakarta Sex is one of the most powerful gifts God ever created. It was designed to bring a man and woman together in a physical, emotional and spiritual bond that creates pleasure, intimacy and also babies. Before you go from a Ms to a Mrs, there are six things every couple should know about sex to ensure a successful marriage. 1. You should be having more of it. 2. You should only be having it with each other! Monogamy is the only way a marriage can work. Don’t look outside your marriage to fulfil your sexual needs. Bringing another person into your bed or your mind will eventually destroy the intimacy. God intended sex to be enjoyed exclusively between a husband and wife. 3. Better sex starts with getting better in other areas outside the bedroom. 4. Talk, text and flirt with each other throughout the day. 5. Don’t use sex as leverage. Don’t use sex as a way to reward or to punish. This will cheapen the power of sex, cause resentment and also erode the trust and intimacy in your marriage. 6. Have fun! Sex is supposed to be fun, so enjoy it!

A Thousand Years of Romance What’s the most romantic city on earth? Paris? Rome? Seattle? Think again. Imagine a city that is a thousand years old and has been through the turmoil of the ages. A city of ancient bridges and walls, of love and lovers: that is Prague. Text by Antonius Martono | Photos courtesy Czech Tourism
During the thousand years of its existence, Prague grew from a settlement stretching from Prague Castle in the north to the fort of Vyšehrad in the south, beco-ming the multicultural capital of a modern European state, the Czech Republic, a member of the European Union. For me, Prague is a fairy-tale city with its magical charm tempting lonely travellers to stay and drown in its beauty. It has often been said that it is impossible to fully admire the beauty and romance of Prague in just a couple of days. Even more difficult is trying to sum up Prague, capture its magic, in a couple of words.
The View The first place you have to go is the city’s observation tower on top of Petrin Hill. This will give you an overview of the city and let you see all there is to see. And with a thousand years of history, there is plenty to see. Having reached the top, there is a great opportunity to catch your breath while getting a bird’s-eye view of the city and seeing what you left off your itinerary. How could you have left off the picturesque National Theatre, the huge Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral and the tiny Golden Lane?
What about the palaces holding precious art galleries, surrounded by beautiful gardens? The list seems endless. To make sure you don’t miss any of Prague’s main treasures, repeat the bird’s-eye view exercise with the “Castle on the Heights,” Vyšehrad. Here, ever-present legends mix with ancient myths that seem just as palpable as the rocky hill, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. No wonder, we are talking after all about the very first seat of Czech princes and kings.
Palace of a Visionary Princess Vyšehrad, or the “Castle on the Heights,” is a beautiful place to visit any time of day or season. To experience the essence of this magical location you need to walk through the huge, beautiful park that covers the area. From the underground station Vyšehrad follow the signs saying “K Rotunde” and the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. As you pass Tabor Gate you will see the ruins of a former fortification built by Charles IV. Maybe more impressive than the park and historic buildings are the astonishing views over Prague, the bridges over Vltava and Prague Castle. The best vantage points are from the Gothic ruins of Libuses’s Baths. Princess Libuse (pronounced “Libushe”) was the daughter of Krok and, as legend has it, she had visionary powers. She became the first woman to rule Prague andmarried a humble ploughman, Premysl. Together they started the Premyslid dynasty that would rule for 400 years. Libuse is said to have foreseen the seven hills of Prague growing into a marvellous city (which indeed happened), thus
she’s considered to be the mother of modern-day Prague. Castle of All Kings and the Story of the Dead Alchemist The story of Prague Castle mirrors the story of Prague itself and Christianity in the Czech Republic. The castle originally included a palace, three churches and a monastery. Even though the fortification faced fires, invasions and world wars, it somehow survived and became the symbol of Prague. The most important moments in the history of Prague Castle include the rebuilding under-taken during the Premyslid dynasty (Romanesque style) in the 13th century and in the following two centuries by Charles IV (Gothic style) and King Vladislav Jagiello (neo-Gothic style). Not even a terrible fire in 1541 could end the history of the castle. On the contrary, a Renaissance style was introduced by Emperor Rudolph II in the late 16th century and the castle became a centre for the arts and science. In the later half of the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresa had the
castle buildings rebuilt in a Baroque style, which is how they still appear to this day. Since 1918, Prague Castle has served as the official residence of the president of the republic. Do you want to know what the smallest street in Prague looks like? Then you shouldn’t miss Golden Lane (Zlata Ulicka) in the castle complex. The street is lined with small houses built in the Mannerism style at the end of the 16th century. The street was created during the construction of the northern fortification at the end of the 15th century. In 1597, Emperor Rudolf II gave the space there to the castle marksmen who guarded the fortification. But there were 24 marksmen and a lack of space, forcing the marksmen to build very small houses for themselves and their families. Over the decades several houses were destroyed and by 1657 there were only 14 houses left. Golden Lane hosted both rich and poor, artists, clerks, footmen and more. Two of the most famous inhabitants of this street were the writer Franz Kafka, who lived in house No. 22, and Prague prophetess Madame de Thebes, who was killed by
the Gestapo during World War II because she foretold the end of Nazism. Golden Lane got its name from the story of alchemists living on the street during the reign of Rudolf II who tried to make not only the philosopher’s stone and the elixir of youth, but also to transform common metals into gold. While the truth of this story may be in question, there is a real story dating to the beginning of the 20th century. One of the houses was inhabited by an old man, a doctor of philosophy named Uhle, who spent all his money on old books about magic. He engaged in secret experiments in his lab inside the house. In 1831, people on Golden Lane heard an explosion coming from his house. When firefighters entered the house and extinguished the blaze, they found Uhle dead with a yellow stone in his hand. The stone was later found to be gold. How the gold got into the house is still not known. Maybe Uhle really did achieve that ancient dream of turning base metals into gold.
Bridge of Mystery and Romance If you want to experience more of the mystery and magic of Prague, take a walk on the Charles Bridge. As peaceful and romantic as it may seem, the Vtlava (Moldau) River has not always been calm. Its fury, combined with the power of heavy rains, has many times risen up to destroy the bridges built over it. The Charles Bridge is no exception. It has on numerous occasions been the victim of floods and natural or human calamities. But it is still standing and hopefully it will remain a symbol of Prague long after we are gone.In the place the Charles Bridge stands today once stood a wooden bridge, destroyed by floods in the 11th century. In its place, in 1172, Wenceslas I ordered the building of the Judith Bridge (named after his wife), the first stone bridge to span the Vltava. The Judith Bridge collapsed in a flood in 1342.
The construction of the bridge we see today dates from the reign of Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. Legend has it that he oversaw everything down to the smallest detail. The oddest thing may be the very date of its foundation: 5:31 am, 9-7-1357 (9th of June). Only odd digits (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and, except 9, all prime numbers. Another unusual thing is that it is said that egg yolks were used to strengthen the mortar used to bind the stone blocks. Although that cannot be verified, modern laboratory tests have indeed found inorganic and organic ingredients in the mortar. The bridge was finished in 1402 and until 1870 was called The Stone or Prague Bridge (Kamenny/Prazsky Most). Originally, the Stone Bridge was supposed to host medieval tournaments and serve as a major commerce link between the different sides of the Vltava. The bridge is decorated with 30 statues and statuaries, most of them in Baroque style, erected around 1700. They represent various saints and patron saints worshipped at that time.
Among the most notable sculptures, one can find the statuaries of St. Luthgard, St. Crucifix and St. John of Nepomuk. It is said that touching the statue of St. John of Nepomuk will make your wish come true. That is why parts of the statue are so shiny, from the countless hands that have touched it over the ages. Starting from 1965, all of the statues have been systematically replaced by replicas and the originals exhibited in the National Museum. Celetna Street: Where Kings Used to Walk Leading from the Old Town Square to the Powder Gate, the gently curving Celetna Street is full of souvenir shops, small and restaurants, all situated in picturesque buildings of various architectonic styles. The history of the square goes back to the 10th century, when it was one of the favourite market places in the developing town of Prague.
Nowadays the square is filled with tourists, terraces, restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops and galleries. It is also the starting point for the horse-drawn carriage rides and a meeting place for different city tours. The square is dominated by the monument of Jan Hus, one of the most important Czech reformers and nationalists, and the fabulous Astronomical Clock, constructed in 1410. Royal Route is coronation route of Czech kings that ends at Prague Castle. The historical path can’t be missed by anyone walking in the old centre of Prague, as it has been marked with a silvery plate (arrow) that can be seen on the sidewalk, which bears the inscription “Silver Line.” On Celetna, one of the oldest streets in Prague, is evidence of the beautiful houses that stood in the area in past ages, decorated with breathtaking murals and façades.
The most interesting façades are the Three Kings, White Lion, Black Sun and the Vulture. On each side of Celetna Street are all sorts of souvenir shops selling seemingly everything, including amber, garnet, porcelain, wood dolls and toys, painted glass and of course the famous Bohemian crystal. It doesn’t matter whether you’re interested in architecture, history or you just want to enjoy the atmosphere of the place, walking through this lovely street in the centre of Prague is a must.

In the Mood for Love We bathe in waves of love at Heavenly Spa by The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali. Text by Melani Semuel Photos courtesy of The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali We are in Bali and no trip to the island would be complete without a spa treatment. My partner is not as avid a spa goers as myself, so I need a truly special spa destination that he will enjoy. That is why I book a romantic ritual at Heavenly Spa at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali. The Westin take their spa seriously, which you sense upon arriving at the spa reception. From the aromatherapy that welcomes you upon entry to the welcome drink that brings a sense of calm, every detail contributes to the ambience of healing and relaxation. When I booked our treatment, the Jayaprana & Layonsari couple’s ritual, I chose it because I liked the treatments, was later did I find out that this much more than just a ritual. The Jayaprana & Layonsari couple’s ritual is based on Bali’s own epic love story. In fact, the floral designs and representations of nature throughout Heavenly Spa represent an epic Balinese love story quite like Romeo and Juliet. After reading the love story, my partner and I were eager to experience the ritual. Prior to our treatment, we enjoyed the steam room and salt sauna. My favourite is the hydro pool where I can just relax and let the water pressure massage me. The restorative power of water has been used for centuries as a healing medium. It’s a great way to relax and warm your muscles, aiding the therapeutic benefits of your treatments and services. After a warm shower, I headed to the relaxation lounge where my partner and I waited for our therapists.
Our 180-minuts loving ritual began with the traditional burning of Balinese incense to bless loved ones. An invigorating scrub using Balinese sea salt was followed by an elemental cleansing wrap with locally sourced seaweed, and while we were wrapped up, our therapists gave us an indulgent scalp massage. After a quick shower, we dozed off under the expert hands of the therapists as they have us a full-body deep-tissue oil massage. The ritual ended with a nourishing Dedari facial, said to induce the kind of rapture that overtook Jayaprana when he first laid eyes on Layonsari. Heavenly Spa by The Westin never disappoints, and this couple’s ritual is one of the most romantic spa experiences we have ever had. The Jayaprana & Layonsari couple’s ritual at Heavenly Spa by The Westin is not just skin-deep. Not only did we feel relaxed, we also learnt a little bit about Bali’s own Romeo and Juliet, which made us appreciate even more our own love story. Heavenly Spa by The Westin is a place to rejuvenate the body, refresh the mind, revive the spirit and restore the senses: a haven that will truly reinvigorate your inner self. Jayaprana and Layonsari’s Love Story In ancient times there was a small Balinese kingdom in Kalianget. One day the king met a crying orphan. He adopted the boy and called him Jayaprana. Jayaprana grew into a fine adult and fell in love with a beautiful flower seller in the market called Layonsari. The couple wanted to marry, which made the whole kingdom happy. But when the king met Layonsari, he also fell in love with her. Obsessed with Layonsari, the king set out to kill Jayaprana. The king’s guard tried many times but could not kill Jayaprana and had to admit to him that it was on the king’s orders. Jayaprana was so sad. He loved his father and his wife, andhe decided to allow the guard to kill him. He took the flowers he had in his hair and gave it to his enemy with a dagger to end his life. As Jayaprana died a floral smell spread throughout the forest, the animals cried in sadness and a white tiger sprang to Jayaprana’s defence and killed the guard. Meanwhile, Layonsari was told that her husband died to honour the king and she tragically took her own life. Again, a beautiful smell spread out across the palace. The king could no longer rule and the two lovers were buried next to one another to rest in eternal peace. They were laid to rest facing the sea in Northern Bali and it is said that if you look down onto the ocean, the coral will change colour and shine brightly.

Hidden Gems in the Heart of Seminyak An exclusive hideaway situated in the heart of Seminyak, Nyaman Group offers contemporary, spacious, functional villas have been designed to offer the maximumcomfort and the best amenities for a luxury stay. Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Nyaman Group
Luxury Villas Nyaman Villas and Villa Chocolat were designed by the well-established interior architect Stephan Rémini. The contemporary, spacious, functional villas have been designed to offer the highest levels and the best amenities for a luxury stay. They were designed with style, surrounded by luxurious gardens with a private swimming pool, and located near a stretch of sandy beach. Within walking distance of shopping and dining areas in Seminyak, Nyaman Villas and Villa Chocolat offer an uncompromising standard of luxury amidst the serenity of Bali’s natural landscape. From the centre of Seminyak, a road bordered by
splendid palm trees escorts you towards the residential district not far from the well-known Oberoi Hotel. In this private setting one passes a guardhouse and then takes a wooded driveway leading to the luxury Nyaman Villas. The central feature is an open-air lobby, just like a hotel, from which a pathway leads to a variety of villas. On the right of the lobby a wide pathway bordered by palm trees, elegantly illuminated at night, guides you to your villa. Contemporary, spacious and functional, Nyaman Villas’ six villas have been conceived to offer the highest comfort and the best facilities for a luxury stay. Decorated with style, surrounded by luxuriant gardens with private swimming pool, the villas are located near the beach. The impres-
sively large front doors of each villa are made of locally carved noble wood. These villas, with full hotel service, consist of four 4-bedroom and two 2-bedroom villas that can be interconnected to make a 6-, 8- or even a 10-bedroom villa. During our visit, we stayed in a 4-bedroom villa. Covering a generous area of 570 square metres, our villa was huge. Immediately upon entering we were in a vast living room complemented on the one side by a fully equipped American fitted kitchen with a large worktop of beautifully carved local stone and open to the garden. The living room leads to the first bedroom. In the middle of the villa was a private garden with a 92square-metre swimming pool. Opposite the

landscaped garden were the second and third bedrooms, each with a private dressing room and a semi-open-air bathroom. The large bay windows give great luminosity and views to the garden and pool. The stairs took us to the upper floor which is where the master bedroom was located. It boasts an outdoor seating area for relaxing, and a very generous sized bathroom that has a Large Bath Up large enough to fit four people. It is perfect for relaxing and unwinding after exploring Bali. Staying at Nyaman Villa, it is hard to believe that it is strategically located in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Seminyak, as the atmosphere is so serene. Staying here gives you the best of both worlds, where all the happening places in Bali are located nearby, while at the same time once you retreat into your villa it feels like you are in a different part of Bali. Nyaman Villas’ sister property, Villa Chocolat, was designed to offer a vacation villa in an urban setting, while maintaining the atmosphere of a peaceful retreat. The
architect Stephan Rémini focused on optimizing all living areas in these graceful 2-, 5-, 6- and 8- bedroom villas, each with its own swimming pool, fish pond, gardens, patio, bar, fully equipped kitchen and living room. The villas offer a striking daily sunset from the upstairs bedrooms. The feeling of space is achieved by the blend of a sober colour palette such as beige, grey and chocolate. Swimming pools are surrounded by spacious gardens with deck chairs. The interior decor is a mix of sober style and timelessness with a purified line of furniture designed with local materials such as sonokeling wood. Located in the centre of Seminyak, unlike some other villas in Bali, there is a safe and quiet feeling free from all nocturnal nuisances. Offering the same standards as found in resorts in Bali and international luxury villas, there is a dedicated staff available to provide all the services you expect of a private villa.
Perjuangan means “passionate” in the Indonesian language. The 21-metre traditional boat features a teak interior and three air-conditioned teak cabins that exude a feeling of warmth and elegance. The master cabin has a double bed, shower room and toilet, the second cabin has two single beds and the last cabin has a double bed, a single bed and a shower room and toilet. The afterdeck, with a bar, kitchen and dining area, is a great place to enjoy delicious meals and share unforgettable alfresco evenings. The front deck presents generous and shaded areas. Life Is Better When Shared We all need the occasional spark to reignite the passion in our relationship, and what better way to fan the flames of love than a romantic escape, njoying stunning views of the luscious green scenery and all the fresh air you can breathe when you book your romantic getaway to Sheraton Bandung and take off on an unforgettable journey of love. After all, life is better when shared. Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Sheraton Bandung When my partner and I needed to take some time off and get away for a short break, we quickly decided on a romantic getaway in the mountains and headed off to Bandung at Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers. Nestled in the cool mountain air of the Dago Valley, Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers is a luxurious urban oasis with intricate touches of traditional and contemporary Bandung decor. The lobby at Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers is a gorgeous affair. Crystal-clear glass chandeliers decorate the high-ceilinged lobby, symbolising Bandung’s blue skies and clouds, while art deco-style dining tables and chairs provide a fresh feeling to the room. As we walked to our suite, we came across the lagoonstyle pool surrounded by palm trees, while a tall frangipani tree in the centre, adding a resort-like atmosphere to the area. We were staying in a Towers Suite, which are generously sized and boast lush views over the neighbouring valley. Our suite had a large and airy bedroom with separate living room, dining table, coffee table and a small pantry. The room itself reflected the warm hospitality of Bandung. On the dining table was a platter of stationery made from chocolate that took my breath away. The paper was made from white chocolate, with pencils made from dark chocolate, topped by white chocolate erasers. Executive chef Severin came up with the brilliant idea. You warm the chocolate pencil with the provided candle and then use it to write on the piece of white chocolate paper. What a fun idea. We had a great time trying to write with the chocolate pencil, but even better was the taste of the chocolate treats. Oh boy, was it delicious. A romantic getaway can only begin one way: with a trip to the spa for some pampering.
So we headed to Shine Spa for some welldeserved indulgence. Setting foot in the spa, I could tell that every single detail had been carefully considered. Inspired by the soothing effects of Mother Nature, refreshing aromas and subdued lighting offer the ideal environment for pampering. I chose a scrub and relaxing body massage, while my partner enjoyed a body massage. While I was savouring my treatment, I looked up and realized the ceiling of the spa had been designed to pamper the eyes. It was the first time I had seen this at a spa. The treatment really transported us to nirvana, while indulging all our senses. After the treatments, a warm ginger drink gave us a shot of energy and we were on our way to the next stop on our journey of love. Feeling a bit nippish after the spa treatment, we went to the newly opened Toastina. This delectable lifestyle café has a bright and cheery atmosphere, with a contemporary design, coffee tables and oversized sofas offering a warm and cosy ambience. It was cold and wet during our stay at Sheraton Bandung, which was a nice break from hot and steamy Jakarta, and there is no better way to warm up than a Bancino (bandrek cappuccino), a drink created by the hotel’s culinary team. This is a must-try and instantly became our favourite. Speaking of food and drink, I am pleased to say that the food at Sheraton Bandung was way past my expectations. When we dined at Feast restaurant, I was blown away not only by the taste but also the presentation, especially the desserts. My advice is to make sure you leave room for dessert, as it is all so beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. I know that Bandung is a culinary destination, but we were quite please to just stay in the hotel and enjoying it mouth-watering food offerings.
Staying at Sheraton Bandung is all about rest and relaxation and a good night’s sleep is guaranteed. The signature Sheraton Sweet Sleeper® bed is so comfortable; it feels like it adjusts to your body and embraces you in a gentle hug. I dare you not to drift off into sweet slumber the moment your head hits the pillow. Featuring 156 guest rooms luxuriously fitted with signature Sheraton Sweet Sleeper® beds, Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers is the only hotel in Bandung designed with private balconies that offer scenic views. In addition, Sheraton Towers Rooms give guests access to a private reception area and the exclusive Towers Lounge. In the evening, we went to Towers Lounge for cocktails. Located on the third floor, the exclusive lounge offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Dago Valley. The newly renovated Towers Lounge features terra cotta and gold colour combinations, together with a refined fireplace and natural materials that immerse you in elegance and comfort in a warm and contemporary setting. My favourite was the fireplace (yes, it is a real fireplace), which adds to the romantic ambience and is the perfect addition to Bandung’s cool weather. Time certainly flies when you are having fun. We had a romantic escape in Bandung. Our stay at Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers was pure bliss, giving us the chance to simply relax and soak in the beauty and relaxing ambience of the hotel. The best thing about the trip was spending time with a loved one. We are definitely coming back, because Bandung, I’m in love. Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers Jl. Ir. H. Honeymoon in the City No matter how busy you are, take the time for a romantic escape. You don’t have to go far, just elope to Shangri-La Jakarta and enjoy romance in the city. Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Shangri-La Jakarta Like any other good thing in life, it takes an effort to keep the fire burning in your relationship. And with busy schedules, some couples might have trouble finding time for a romantic escapade. But it really isn’t that hard. A romantic escape doesn’t have to mean taking time off work and getting out of town. You can simply book a romantic weekend stay at Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta. It’s the end of the year and workloads are high. The year-end holiday is just around the corner but why wait to celebrate your love? One weekend, my partner and I booked a stay at Shangri-La Jakarta to relax, unwind and simply enjoy time together, just the two of us. From the fictional place described in James Hilton’s 1933 novel Lost Horizon, “ShangriLa” is synonymous with utopia. If you have extra time while staying at the Shangri-La, you’ll have fun reading the legendary novel to see how the hotel’s theme was inspired. In the novel, Shangri-La is in a Himalayan valley where everyone enjoys eternal youth, peace and happiness. In real life, Shangri-La
Jakarta puts a great deal of emphasis on each guest’s stay, making this much more than just a hotel. The one-bedroom suite, in which we stayed, is 88 square metres of old-school opulence with a separate living area, a foyer, even a guest bathroom. It has all the finest fabrics from floor to ceiling, couches to armchairs. There are dark wood furnishings, smoothto-the-touch linens, big sturdy armchairs and a king-sized bed filled with pillows. You can even choose your perfect pillow from the hypoallergenic pillow menu – it’s all very luxurious and grown-up, a boudoir fit for all your VIP whims. The main bathroom boasts a bathtub and a separate shower stall, with L’Occitane toiletries. The view is just as spectacular outside. Jakarta is not a city where tree-lined thoroughfares and wide green expanses are a common sight, so gazing down and being greeted by the lush green of the hotel pool and garden is a real thrill. When you’re done oohing and aahing about the awesome views, it’s time to run amok in your palatial surroundings. Venture to the
ground floor and you’ll find yourself at the hotel’s pool. It’s as pretty as they come, so pack a swimsuit and soak in the sun. If you really must, put in a few calorie- busting laps during your time there, too. In the evening we headed to Rosso to savour the stylish Italian dishes. Rosso bedazzles diners with everything lavishly done up in red; from the waiters’ uniforms to every piece of furniture. Featuring a contemporary look combined with a tasteful and ornate art-deco style, this is one great Italian restaurant and the perfect setting for a romantic date night. We had a great and romantic time at Shangri-La Jakarta. The weekend we spent there give us the chance to rekindle our love and enjoy a honeymoon in the city. Shangri-La Jakarta Kota BNI, Jl. Jend. EARLY DETECTION Breast cancer is the number one killer of women in the world. It is a demon for many women, yet most choose to ignore it. According to National Breast Cancer Foundation research, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Although your whole world seems to be crumbling right now it is not the end; being diagnosed with breast cancer is not a death sentence. When it comes to breast cancer, you have to remember, no symptoms doesn’t mean there’s no cancer. To protect yourself, please go at the RIGHT TIME, to the RIGHT PLACE. To go at the right time, does not mean whenever you have complaints. “Right time” means complying with the time of breast cancer screening/early regardless of any complaints/symptoms. Going to the right place for managing a breast problem means visiting a Breast Centre, where you will be handled by multidisciplinary doctors in an integrated team approach. Remember, breast cancer management is never addressed by only one discipline (a fragmented approach), but always via an integrated approach. Take one day at a time. Find your inner strength, courage, and faith to get through. If you look too far ahead, you might get dizzy and pass out from it all. Ask yourself: ‘What makes me feel nurtured, encouraged?’ Do whatever possible to make you feel special because you are. Be patient, learn to wait, take a drive, breathe in that fresh air—live. If you have something to look forward to ... If you have love in your life, it will help pull you through. Never forget, you’re not alone.
“Everything happens for a reason. We may not understand it now, but we will. This is the time, losing a breast is hard for anyone. You might feel incomplete as a woman when you have lost a breast. Remember that your life is more important than any single organ of your body. The main goal is to get healthy and cancer-free. You can elect to undergo reconstructive surgery to have your breast again in the future. It is not the end. It is a beginning of a new and healthy you.
When it comes to breast cancer, it is best to detect it early. Nobody knows our bodies better than ourselves, so what are you waiting for, girls? Save your boobs! Get them checked NOW...
