Truly, Madly,Deeply “Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile.” (Bob Marley) Recently I asked my best friend if he was in love. He asked me, “how do you know when you are in love?” I paused for a while and then answered, “falling in love is when you suddenly find yourself smiling for no reason, when you’ve had the worse time ever and a simple phone call or text suddenly make the world a better place, it is when your tummy feels warm, and occasionally it can give you goose bumps too.” But honestly, what is love? These last few months, my life and the lives of some close to me have been turned upside down and inside out by this crazy little thing called “love”. There are some occasions that make my friends and I start to question what love really means. Love is a simple thing that everyone longs for. For me, love is something that cannot be described, it can only be felt. Love is something so powerful that it can change your life. To love and be loved is an amazing feeling. Simply Appealing If you have a wedding dress that is highly detailed, look for very simple bridal accessories like a single gold necklace with a simple pendant. You can find a simple, sophisticated yet feminine look on Chopard Happy Diamonds collection. The selections of jewellery pieces are inspired by sparkling drops of water in a waterfall, freely moving diamonds on these three hearts reflecting love and light. Combine a pendant in 18-carat rose gold, white gold, and yellow gold and suspended from an 18-carat rose gold chain. And what is most adorable, each of the glowing hearts holds freely moving diamonds, as if it dances in a celebration of your wedding day. All brides-to-be out there, you can perfectly match this beautiful necklace with the same collection ring.

Big Day Beauty Many brides go on a diet to lose weight, have a spa to relaxe the mind, etc. But above all, the most important part is taking care of your skin because nothing will replace a beautiful skin even if many make-up products can help you have a glowing look. Like all of us, skin needs a moment on its own to repair and restore its freshness. Before the big day, a little boost from targeted skincare would definitely help, such as CLINIQUE repairwear laser focus. A powerful serum combats fine lines, wrinkles, and the effect that stress has on skin. With continued use, these skin problems are visibly reduced. As a result, skin is left smoother and a youthful appearance is restored, and the bride will have natural glowing skin by the time she says “I do.

Lovely Scents Your wedding perfume is not only a special scent but also a fragrance of love. The fragrance should speak volumes about you and your personality. If you are planning an outdoor wedding party with a natural kind of theme, you may want to add a little more floral into your fragrance wardrobe with the new perfume, Dolce by Dolce & Gabbana. The perfume contains top notes of papaya flower and neroli, middle notes of amaryllis, narcissus and water lily, and base notes of musk and cashmeran. Dolce fragrance is definitely the go-to for all brides who want to feel lovely and beautiful as they walk down the aisle.

electing a wedding ring is a romantic struggle between the bride and groom. Considering most wedding rings are sold in sets of two, the bride and the groom have to put their heads together to come up with perfect rings for the two of them.

Marry Me There are so many ways to say “marry me,” so many rings to give, from the cleanest cuts to the most ornate, from a simple band to a bespoke creation that speaks of a dream come true. There is a ring for everyone. Create an engagement ring together and watch as it takes form. Choosing her ring is saying yes in Cartier style, a beautiful token, the authenticity of a declaration, of certified love. Cartier proposes an engagement with the world – princes and princesses, lady and gentleman, him and her, from Paris to Seoul and anywhere that people are in love, however that may be, but always with diamonds! This is what Cartier is offering, in true jeweller tradition, by creating a ring to match each person’s dreams: A spoken promise that makes it possible to create your very own solitaire in just a few weeks. Choose from the highly refined, platinum-wire body of the Déclaration ring, the diamond-paved scrolls around the floral setting of the Ballerine ring or the stunning simplicity of the Solitaire 1895.

Marry Me Apart from the dress, the ring is the most essential item in a wedding, and also the most difficult to choose. Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Cartier

Here are several good tips to help you find the perfect wedding ring: 1. Start looking for your rings at least six months before the wedding. 2. When choosing the shape of your wedding ring, always choose a circle because it is the most comfortable for daily use. Moreover, the circle symbolizes eternal love that never ends. 3. A classic and minimalist design is highly recommended because it will stand the test of time. Since your wedding ring is essentially going to be worn forever, choose a timeless design. 4. Avoid complicated diamond settings. Choose a planted diamond setting because it will prevent you from losing the diamonds, and it is much more comfortable for men, who are not used to wearing jewellery. 5. Let the groom choose the ring first, which can help men get more comfortable with the idea of jewellery. And unlike women, men don’t wear rings all that well, so finding one that looks good on the groom will be the main challenge. 6. Choose a diamond ring with a story behind it, hopefully one that symbolizes the love of the couple. 7. Get as many references as possible and try on as many rings as you can. Some wedding rings may look nice in pictures but not so nice on your finger.

Love Bond The Cartier bridal space examines the 4 C’s of diamonds: carat, colour, clarity and cut. “Set for you by Cartier,” a special bridal salon, provides exclusive service by Cartier’s highly talented and devoted team, making every bride’s dream come true. Best Foot Forward

Your wedding day is one of life’s unforgettable moments. Most people expect that everything will be perfect and nothing will go wrong. One of the many important things for the big day is to walk down the aisle beautifully and gorgeously with the perfect shoes. Avoid shoes that will kill your day and smile. Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Rococo

O

ne thing that some people neglect to focus on when prepping for the big day is to find the perfect shoes. Shoes are very important because wearing the wrong shoes will make you miserable the whole day. In contrast, wearing comfortable shoes will brighten your smile. Not only walking down the aisle or mingling with guests, you will also need the shoes to perform perfectly while dancing with your spouse. Wearing the ideal shoes will boost your confidence, beauty and comfort levels, so don’t neglect them. Picking the right footwear for the wedding requires special focus. Make sure your shoes match the length of the gown, or his pants, as well as the party’s concept. It is recommended to people to get shoes a half size bigger than usual for the wedding day; the reason being is that your feet can swell up from standing so long, so be prepared. It will take some time from shop to shop, boutique to boutique but it will be well worth the investment in time and money in the end. Do not panic, follow the steps below: 1. Start with a foot treatment like a foot massage, paraffin treatment or a pedicure. Make sure your skin and toenails look adorable. 2. For the bride, matching your silk or satin gowns to satin shoes or strap sandals is the best. 3. Matching your tulle and silk chiffon gowns to crepe or silk shoes works well. 4. Check out the heel heights that you can tolerate -- from slippers to proper high heels.

5. A very high heel will give you a sexy feeling, medium heels give the same lovely line but with a gentler lift, and flats are graceful and feminine. 6. Fabric shoes in materials such as lace, velvet, satin or silk tend to be more feminine, sweet and elegant looking. While leather and suede fabrics will give a bold and off-beat effect. 7. If you have an outdoor wedding party, you have to choose a more durable fabric, since light fabrics such as silk and satin can tear easily. 8. If you are wearing a more casual dress, you have to wear casual shoes or sandals, such as a ballet slipper or low-heeled sandals. 9. Choose the main focus of the shoes that can match with your dress and headpiece, such as jewellery with diamonds, rhinestones, beads, stones or pearls. 10. For the groom, matching your formal wool suit with leather shoes is ideal. 11. If the party is outdoors and the groom decides to wear cotton or rayon pants, choose leather informal strap sandals. 12. Match up the colours of your shoes or sandals with the dress or suit. 13. Buy comfortable shoes or sandals at least 2 weeks before “D-day.” Wear them around the house and get the feel of them. Choose shoes or sandals from fashion designer collections or fashion brands. Style and comfort are two different things; stylish does not mean comfortable and comfortable does not mean you get the hottest style. So have fun finding your perfect shoes.

The Mermaid Dress Never doubt the power of a graceful mermaid dress. This season, designers are creating dresses that are even more gorgeous and glamorous.

What are the benefits of having spa treatment? So many benefits! Health-wise, there’s lots of research now on the proven medical benefits of massage – from lowering blood pressure to deep and profound relaxation that in turn impacts our nervous system and wellbeing in positive ways. I personally find that taking a massage is one of the few times I switch off digitally as well – which is very relaxing! Is there anything that men must know before choosing the treatment that will suit them the most? Pre-treatment consultation and discussion are essential so that therapists can deliver a treatment that exceeds their expectations. At Karma Spa we train our bodyworkers to always personalize the treatment to each guest. Then each guest receives personal attention where they need it most (usually back, neck and shoulder). Usually we find that most men prefer a more relaxing style of massage than full-on acupressure strong style. Men need tenderness too! a full body massage, signature Deep Calm Facial and finishes with a choice of manicure and pedicure. In your opinion what is the must-do treatment for men? I really encourage men to take a risk and try our DEEP CALM FACIAL as most will just opt for a massage, yet this treatment is a wow experience. At first, men are often hesitant as they are not interested in the idea of a facial and can’t grasp the benefits – but once they try they are hooked for life!

Is there a spa etiquette for men? Its crucial that spas always guide male guests, who are often newcomers, about every step of the way – as not everyone has been to a spa. The Draping protocol is important - so the man feels totally comfortable – after all, the spa is the only place in the resort where a guest experiences oneon-one time with a staff member – and usually mostly naked! Its important to create a comfortable environment for all guests.

In preparation for the wedding day, what treatments do you think the groom-tobe must have? Definitely recommended is one of our

usually spend too much time on the laptop and really need a good massage! Also, we always like to slow down our treatments a notch or two at karma – I feel this is increasingly essential to combat our fast “Blackberry” minds … massage is one of the few experiences where one is forced to slow down and be present. Incredible benefits come from experiencing a deep slow-style massage … .

When talking about spa and wellness, there is no better person to talk to than Judy Chapman, the Spa & Wellness Curator of Karma Royal Group. Judy grew up in a spa-like household so it’s in her blood, so to speak. Judy’s mother was into yoga and healthy food and her sister is a well-regarded yoga teacher and author. Judy has been working in the spa industry since she was 23 and is the former editor-in-chief of Spa Asia magazine and author of four nonfiction books on spas including Ultimate Spa, a best-selling coffeetable book on Asian spas and treatments. Over the past 20 years Judy has travelled the world, exploring regions like the Himalayas, Japan, France, Prague and China, consulting on and creating awardwinning spa concepts, beauty & treatment experiences. Judy is also a qualified yoga teacher and studied macrotiobic food as your medicine. Judy has been the Wellness & Spa Curator for the Karma Royal Group for six years.

Spas for Men Having a spa treatment is much more than just a skin deep beauty, it is also a pampering for body, mind and soul… And it is a hit amongst many men… Text by Melani Semuel | Photo courtesy of Karma Spa

nce upon a time, spas were identified with women, but the trend has changed as more and more men go to spas. MAXX-brides spoke to Judy Chapman, the Spa & Wellness Curator of Karma Royal Group, about the trend in spas for men. There is a rising trend among men for spa treatments. What are your thoughts on this? Just five years ago the figures at our spas showed a 60-70% female to 20-30% male ratio. Today its 50-50 and this is a worldwide trend. I find the new male spagoer so inspiring – they are usually relaxed and positive about their treatment. They are a very open-minded clientele and easy to please.

Are there broad differences between spa treatments for men and for women? Initially I was not keen on this – I preferred the unisex treatment menu concept as we are all human bodies. However, colleagues advised me to create a separate men’s spa menu and it has worked – to the extent one of our best-selling rituals on the menu is our 2. 5 hour Men’s Retreat – I am constantly amazed at how many men want a longer treatment time in spas even if it might be an excuse to get away and have some time alone (only kidding) – it’s fantastic! In your opinion, why do men like to go to spas? I think men genuinely appreciate the spa environment for its sanctuary atmosphere

where they can switch off, slow down and be at ease. Most men work on computers so really do need regular massages to keep them stress-free; karma massages are very results-orientated. What are the treatments that Karma Spa offers for men clientele? We offer everything from our signature Deep Calm Facial (that includes loads of neck and shoulder massage) to personal fitness sessions and Mens Anti-aging consultations with light medical spa treatments for men such as Botox, Vitamin Infusions and even information on Human Growth Hormones (HGH). Our best-selling men’s treatment is our 2.5 hour Men’s Retreat. It starts with an Infrared Detox Sauna followed by

our wedding day is one of the times that you won’t get by with unkempt, greasy hair or chewed nails. We know it’s not always easy for the groom to take the time to look good. Here’s a checklist and some simple steps for the groom to get ready for the big day.

Twelve months before • Book the wedding venue • Start looking for wedding organizer and decorator • Ask your best friend to be your best man and start your groomsman list • Book the church or temple, check out information on the formal (civil) wedding certificate

Nine months before • Book band, wedding singer and work together with your wedding organizer on the format of your wedding reception • Start drawing up the wedding guest list and involve your parents and your wife-to-be’s parents too

Six months before • Plan your honeymoon • Make sure that you have signed contracts for venue and vendors

Three months before

• The guest list should have been finalized. It’s now time to send out the invitations. • Sample the menu, agree it and sign it off • Choose a suit to rent or buy • Order the wedding rings • Many grooms-to-be start a workout routine during the three months before the wedding so they look toned and that six-pack is perfect for the honeymoon

s the bride, you are the star of your wedding along with the groom, and everybody wants to congratulate you on your special day. So it is important for your nails to look their best. Here are some tips for healthier and more beautiful nails. Tips for brides before their special day: • Take care of your nails and keep them as healthy as possible by having a manicure and pedicure every two weeks, for at least four to five times before the wedding. This will keep your nails healthy and beautiful, and your skin fresh and moisturised. • The inclination towards the natural look has become established now and the fashion houses are now demonstrating the strong positions of the natural accents of nails during their fall/winter shows once more. • If your gown has a lot of details and is busy, use natural colours for you nails with simple 3-D flowers. If the gown is simpler, go for some little crystals, but be careful not to overdo it. • Be careful when you choose nail art; brides will be on the move a lot and don’t you want your nails getting stuck in your beautiful lace dress.

Each year, trends in nail art bring with them absolute novelty and something vintage to reinvent and reinterpret. Here are some ideas to imitate from Fall/ Winter 2014-2015 • This season it’s white, a nail art trend for a colour that is often not easy to carry on your hands and requires careful attention, especially when choosing texture and full shades of chalk. • Golden Accents: Golden shade is a noteworthy trend; such details have always been a symbol of luxury and comfort and for the coming season. Go not only for the monochrome golden look, but also the most diverse and creative design patterns and prints with this shade. For instance, you can create French manicure with a golden shade and have something innovative and chic. • Stripes: Speaking about the diversity of the nail patterns, opt for linear and stripy patterns. These linear prints mainly come with vertical directions and with the most incredible shade combinations. For example, combos of red and black, pale blue and bordeaux and even colourful with almost all the colours used with different overtones for each nail. • Glittery and Shimmery Nails: Despite the fact that a shimmery and glittery

manicure is not meant for everyday use, you can still go for this absolutely chic and cool combination, especially suited to special occasions and events. • Lace Manicure: The following super modern and chic design pattern for nails that can be used is the lace manicure, which comes with the most diverse patterns and prints. A wedding marks a very special moment in our life, but during this time we can also find ourselves under more stress and the signs and symptoms of ageing can become more pronounced. Jakarta certainly has no shortage of clinics offering anti-ageing and beauty treatments. But for those who are conscious of what goes into their bodies and onto their skin, rest assured that Nano Philosophy offers all-organic, allnatural, safe and effective plant based treatments. Nano Philosophy products and treatments are developed by dedicated research teams in Japan and Europe. Using the latest advancements in Nano Technology, Nano Philosophy delivers safe, effective, holistic solutions to beauty, wellness and anti-aging. Nano Philosophy focuses on reversing the damaging effects from our lifestyle choices from the inside out. In order to maintain a beautiful young complexion and figure, we need to focus on balancing our body’s internal needs. Nano Philosopy offers treatments such as Ozone Therapy, Intravenous Vitamin Therapy, DNA Protection, Hormone balancing, Liver support and more. Nano Philosophy provides a holistic, comprehensive and organic approach to health, beauty and wellness. We tried Nano’s popular Organic Superlift, which creates a lifted and sculpted appearance in the face, and is revered amongst those wanting to lift the cheek, jaw and eye area. We also tried the organic fat-burning treatments as I would like a slimmer face and to get rid of a double chin. Acne, wrinkles, dehydration, excessive sebum production, pigmentation, sun damage, poor texture, large pores, uneven skin tone and scarring can all be treated with Nano’s organic products. Nano offers treatments by injection and those who prefer a needleless option can opt for a painless and effective alternative.

Here are some treatments that are really recommended to look good and feel fabulous. Ozone Therapy Ozone therapy has many benefits and has been and continues to be used in European clinics and hospitals for over 50 years. As a lack of sufficient oxygen is a major cause of poor health, and when the body is flooded with an activated form of oxygen, namely ozone, people consistently report that these conditions as well as their general health, well-being and energy levels dramatically improve. Nano Cocktail When nutrients are given intravenously, your digestive system is bypassed and a much higher level of nutrition can be delivered directly to your cells via the bloodstream. The nutrients work in your body to help balance and support your system. If you tend to be anxious or overstressed, it can help to calm and relax you. If you tend to have fatigue and feel run down, it can help boost your energy. Liposlim For those wanting to lose weight, Nano’s slimming cocktails contain very high amounts of liver-supporting nutrients. The slimming cocktails are also designed to give the body every vitamin and mineral it needs so cravings are reduced, energy remains high and the usual effects of detoxing are reduced. Nano Needle-less Delivery System 15 minute breast enhancement? Painless nose slimming? Drop a dress size in half an hour? Double chin diminished in your lunch break? Face lifting and sculpting and no needle in sight? For those who don’t want to use injections. Nano Needle-less Delivery System is able to penetrate the skin as deeply as a needle, with no pain, and no breaking of the skin surface. This revolutionary treatment ensures products are evenly distributed into the skin surface and produces an immediate and lasting result.

hhh… Summer in Paris! The long, warm days that never seem to end make the city an enchanting paradise for couples in love. And with many Parisians taking their annual holidays during July and August, the rushed pace of the metropolis winds down to a more laidback vibe that’s perfectly suited for romance. With its beautiful architecture, cute cafes, rich art and history – not to mention the sheer number of cosy, candlelit restaurants to choose from – Paris is a place where even the most hardened of hearts can’t help but warm up to its charms.

surely remember the opening scene when we encounter the main character skipping rocks along the Canal SaintMartin. Though it may seem second to the stunning Seine, the Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th arrondissement is at the heart of the young and happening neighbourhood filled with cool restaurants and bars. In the warmer months, packs of students and locals savour picnics along the canal from morning to evening. Find a charming bridge or restaurant along the quai to pop the big question. Metro: Jacques Bonsergent Bois de Boulogne

It’s no wonder that Asians of all nationalities still regard it as a top destination for marriage proposals and a place to snap their engagement photos. So the next time your beau surprises you with a trip for two to the amorous capital, it should set off alarm bells or rather, wedding bells!

The 16th arrondissement is often left out of most tourist itineraries. But once there, the residential district captures an authentic ambience that’s far from the tourist hubbub of the busier attractions. Head to the expansive Bois de Boulogne for a breath of fresh air, and take a tour of the free zoo and tiny islands there.

Pont des Arts Lovebirds from around the world flock to this pretty bridge, and it’s a particularly popular place to propose. In recent years, lovers announced their commitment by writing both their names onto a padlock and clasping it onto the side of the bridge, before throwing the keys into the river. (Though Police now ensure that the keys are kept and not polluting the Seine.) Be inspired by lovers from across the globe and choose the bridge as the place to sign off your single days forever. Metro: Pont Neuf Île Saint-Louis The tiny island straddling the Left and Right Bank is reputed to be one of the most romantic spots in the city. Marked by the gorgeous gothic Notre Dame Cathedral, the labyrinthine cobblestone paths are lined with numerous antique shops. There is also a host of charming inns and B&Bs to spend the night. If you’re there during the summer months, stop by infamous Berthillon and get a couple of scoops of lip-smacking ice cream before summing up the courage to ask for your partner’s hand. Metro: Pont Marie

Paddle a boat out onto Lac Inférieur – the peaceful waters are surrounded by beautiful weeping willow trees and inhabited by dozens of swans among other birds. Make your pact of everlasting love amidst the picturesque, natural surroundings. Metro: Ranelagh Carousel du Louvre The grandiose Louvre was once the royal palace before Louis XIV moved the royal court to Versailles, and since the 17th century has held the royal collection of art – the basis of the world-famous museum today. Head out to the Carousel du Louvre – the outdoor courtyard where you’ll find the I.M. Pei Pyramid. The massive cobblestone courtyard is especially enchanting at sunset, which during European summers can be closer to 10pm, after the museum closes. You can listen to the music streaming in from buskers playing under the archways, all the while feeling as if you have the entire place to yourselves! On the ground floor, the vaulted square offers boutiques, as well as restaurants and cafes with terraces that are ideal for people watching. There are often impromptu music performances, which may range from a soprano singing verses of Verdi to a gypsy swing double bassist, at some of the restaurants. Find Your Perfect Wedding Venue He popped the question, and now you are faced with the next big question: after who you’ll marry, where to get married is the next big decision as it sets the tone for the whole affair. hoosing the wrong venue can wreak havoc on your wedding day. But do you really know what you’re looking for? Before you go dashing off to look around every single wedding venue, here are some top tips to think about when choosing a wedding venue: It Takes Two Talk to your other half about what sort of wedding both of you would like to have and think through your overall vision. If you have different ideas, be prepared to compromise. It’s his wedding too as much as yours. When I Said That I Love You Decide on the date of your wedding, and know how flexible you can be about the date. If you’re flexible about the day of the week, month or even the year of your wedding you will have a much wider choice of venues. It is also important to know what season you will have your wedding: If you want an outdoor wedding and you are getting married in the rainy season, a backup plan is a must. Size Does Matter Is your dream wedding small and intimate or a lavish affair? It’s hard to look for venues without knowing your numbers. You and your other half – and both sets of parents – should make lists of the people you would like to invite. Have a rough idea of guest numbers before you start looking for a wedding venue or be prepared to

alter your guest list. This should avoid the disappointment of visiting a beautiful venue only to find out it is too big or small for your wedding. Money Talk Working out a budget early on will help you to shortlist potential wedding venues. Don’t waste time looking at places that are too pricey, but keep in mind that the venue, especially if it includes catering, will normally take up quite a large chunk of your budget. Our Wedding, Our Style Pick a spot that reflects you as a couple, whether by its significance or ambience. The city where your first met each other, a beautiful chapel that takes your breath away; the location should be as special as the wedding itself. Destination Wedding A destination affair is so fun, but it means a smaller percentage of invitees will attend. Wherever you wed, also think twice about how close the ceremony and reception are; if they’re more than a half an hour apart, or you have lots of out-of-towners, it’s nice to provide transportation. First Impressions Last When trying to choose among several venues, think about how you felt when you first walked in, because that is how your guests will feel.

Oasis of Calm Most people dream of finding an oasis of calm, a quiet personal space that offers privacy and a chance to escape the constant rush and spend quality time doing nothing. Well, dreams can come true at Komaneka at Bisma.

Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Komaneka at Bisma.

I

I could not remember the last time I had a month free of deadlines. Without realising it, my life had turned into one never-ending deadline. With so many things to do and trips to take, I just had more on my plate than I could handle and needed an escape, a chance to simply do nothing. I knew that some of my friends had been feeling the same as me with their hectic schedules and busy lifestyles. So I planned a short escapade to Ubud, and Komaneka at Bisma, offered just the escape I was looking for. The moment I set foot inside the resort, I know that we were in for a relaxing stay replete with the most delectable pampering. From the lobby, we could see nothing but the lush greenery of the surrounding trees and valleys, truly a sight for our tired eyes. I stood at the

edge of the lobby and, looking down, could see the resort swimming pool. It was so inviting I could hardly resist the temptation to swim; I almost jumped of the lobby. But the best was yet to come. For this stay, I booked the signature Bisma Residence, a three-bedroom pool villa. As I was spending the time with friends, I want us to be close to each other yet still have the privacy that we all needed. Upon entering the residence, I was amazed at its size. Later, I discovered that Bisma Residence extends over 800 square metres. One bedroom is located on the ground floor with two bedrooms on the upper floor. A combination of wooden and marble stone flooring adds a unique and contemporary feeling with original lush tropical landscaping. A long private

pool side deck with a generous area of 42 square metres immediately caught our eyes. There were some loungers near the pool, a perfect place for a little sunbathing. Now into the bedrooms, all of which were again amply sized. It was very comfortable on the large white fluffy bed, with a comfortable sofa, writing table and wireless internet connection perfect for those who want to stay connected with the real world. Each broom is equipped with a wide screen LCD TV completed with Apple TV program. There are so many movies to choose from: One night, we spent around half an hour trying to choose a movie to watch as each of us seemed to prefer a different genre. What I really liked about the villa was the fact that it boasts three bedrooms, all of which are almost identical. No matter which bedroom you choose, you can enjoy the same comfort and luxury. The three-bedroom villa was so comfortable, time seemed to stand still and the view was nothing short of breathtaking. After we were done oohing and aahing over the awesome views, it was time to run amok in the palatial surroundings. I ventured downstairs to our villa pool. It was as pretty as they come, so pack a swimsuit and soak in the sun. Or simply lazing on one of the loungers accompanied by a good book, well… in my case I got the book but never had the chance to even open it as we were too busy enjoying the resort. Our villa was located adjacent to the Wanasmara wedding chapel, which is different compared to many chapels in

Bali as the view is the greenery of the lush Ubud valleys. My friend who was planning her wedding, fell in love at the first sight of this pretty chapel. While some of my friends decided to take a nap, I felt like I really needed some pampering so I headed to the spa planning to have a soothing massage to rub away all my cares and worries. When I looked at the spa menu, I could not resist the temptation to indulge myself in headto-toe pampering. So I ended up having a 3-hour spa treatment. It totally blew my mind away. I felt I was transferred to seventh heaven. My body was so relaxed, and I felt so refreshed. And my skin was glowing after the treatment. After a long day of pampering and relaxation, we sauntered back to our villa in a state of satiated bliss. As my friends were relaxing by the pool, I went upstairs and sat on the balcony. I could feel the mountain breezes caress my skin, the sounds of birds singing, I felt so peaceful and relaxed. I gazed at my surroundings, my eyes taking in the greenery of the surrounding trees. As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, I could feel the whole mood change, making the atmosphere inside the villa unutterably romantic. I could imagine having my honeymoon here at Komaneka at Bisma. Food at Komaneka Bisma is amazingly delicious. Forget weight-watching and the niggling guilt at home. When confronted with the galaxy of gastronomic options that Komaneka at Bisma has, the stars dictate that you should eat with wanton abandon. You should not miss afternoon tea here at the resort where you can enjoy a selection of cakes and sweets.

What I really like about Komaneka is the choices of kerupuk (traditional crackers) that it serves as appetizers. I’m pleased that the menu has an equal choice of Indonesian and international menus. I found some traditional Indonesian items that are hard to find nowadays but are still being served at the resort. No matter what your preferences are, you will be tantalized with the delicious dishes here. Eating, sleeping and relaxing were all that we did while staying at Komaneka at Bisma. It felt like we were in a world of our own. We had a relaxing and tremendous time at Komaneka. It is the perfect resort for anyone, from couples seeking a romantic getaway to a family spending time together. Or just like us, a bunch of friends just wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. Komaneka at Bisma makes for a cavernous playground for getaway warriors looking for some much-deserved R&R, offering a host of activities and indulgences without your having to step foot outside once you’ve checked in. But for those who can’t do without a getaway spot of shopping, the resort’s convenient location in the heart of Ubud means that within minutes you will be able to work off some of those excesses by pounding the floors at the shops and cafes. Now if that’s not the bestgetaway plan ever! Komaneka at Bisma Jalan Bisma, Ubud, Gianyar Bali – Indonesia Phone. +62 361 971 933 www.komaneka.com

ith the wedding finally over, it is time for the bride and groom to enjoy each other’s company as they embark on their new journey of love and commitment. A honeymoon is also the perfect excuse to indulge in a dream holiday of a lifetime. We headed to WakaGangga and experienced the honeymoon paradise of our dreams. Upon landing in Bali, we started our journey to WakaGangga and just as the car reached Tabanan , the scenery began to change. Passing a village that leads to the resort, we saw some beautifully yellowing rice fields, their stalks turning transparent golden as the late afternoon sun softened to a romantic glow. The fields looked as though they were on fire. We watch as the maturing stalks sway gently in the breeze, seemingly beckoning me into the fields, inviting me to brush my arms against them. “We’re almost there, ” the driver says, breaking the silence and startling us out of our reverie. “See that there? That’s the roof of your resort. We’re almost there.”

I lean over, trying to get a better view from the back seat. We bank around a corner and suddenly, there it is, the conical thatched roof of WakaGangga lobby penetrating the empty blue sky. It is such a gorgeous and unique sight. As we approach closer to the resort, more of these conical roofs that make up WakaGangga’s resort complex slowly pop into sight. The uber-cute structures are unmistakably arresting and endearing at the same time. Surrounded by brilliantly green terraced rice fields that slope towards a dramatic black and surf beach, WakaGangga combines stylish architecture with natural beauty and resort services. We roll to a stop, and as the concierge unloads our luggage, I am able to get a better view of the reception area. Lying just beyond the lobby area is the swimming pool, attractively situated overlooking the breaking surf of the Indian Ocean, which is only a few steps away from the pool. What a glorious view! The resort’s restaurant, located a short walk from the lobby and sitting in an elevated position, affords a bird’s-eye view of the entire resort and the pool

below, as well as the Indian Ocean. The edgy restaurant, minimalist in design yet ethnic with a generous use of old timber and bamboo, is comfortable and perfect for lounging in during a lazy day. It is also the perfect perch to catch one of Bali’s famous sunsets, when the sun melts into the horizon over the expansive Indian Ocean. It’s time to check out our accommodation. The concierge escorts us to our Villa. We stay in a villa with pool, the architecturally stunning villas with terraces open to the views of the sea allows the lifestyle of Balinese to continue within the confines of the resort. The villa is decorated in classic Waka style, a blend of traditional and rustic elements combining seamlessly with modern comforts. Each villa is built over 100 square metres to 430 square metres with locally sourced timber, bamboo and artifacts that enhance the ethnic interior design. The unique circular architecture of the villa offers sweeping views of the natural surroundings. The air-conditioned bedroom features a double bed, draped in a net under a high ceiling, a bay window sofa converts into a single bed perfect for a siesta.

Romancing the Sea A honeymoon should be as romantic as possible, a moment of your life that will provide you with a lifetime of wonderful memories. This is exactly what you get when you honeymoon at WakaGangga.

The spacious and brightly lit bathroom is set in a private walled garden and features a walk-in closet, separate stalls for shower and WC, a double vanity counter and a handcrafted terrazzo bathtub. The outdoor shower in the bathroom garden allows guests to savour Bali’s warm tropical climate. A large thatched-roof Bale in the villa courtyard is furnished for lounging and dining. The private swimming pool in villa reflects the terraced rice field surrounding the resort. If you want to experience true luxury, wake up early to the gentle sound of the surf, smell the fragrant alangalang and wait for the sun to rise – all while lying in bed. Here, you are surrounded by the textures and colours of nature, dressed slate and tiles, smooth, unpainted wood, soft homespun fabrics, intricately worked copper, fragrant alang-alang grass, natural bamboo, rough-cut stones and flowers. We wake the next morning and walk to the restaurant, the air fresh and the verdant rice fields a silvery carpet of dew, and order a hefty

American breakfast while enjoying the morning light and the breeze in the semi-open-air restaurant. The feeling is one of freedom and escape from the constant chaos of everyday life. We are relaxed and at peace, and the serene atmosphere, the beautiful view of the clear blue sky agains the black sandy beach, and the sea breeze carress our skin. Perhaps real luxury is the semi-remote location, which give us the feeling of being in a world of our own, away from all the hustle-bustle and noise that constantly bombards us, and the chance to just sit quietly and listen to our inner selves. WakaGangga is the perfect place to get back in touch with the person you once were, and the person you dream of becoming. Here are table set-ups inspired by Steve décor and Ghea Panggabean….. and something that will uniquely impress your guests and make your wedding memorable.

Summer Night Dream Think rich shocking pink, green or red combined with Peranakan tableware. Consider also another romantic summer’s night dream in rich and luxurious Peranakan-

style with silver cutlery. The combination of colour and table arrangement will impress your guests. Put a dress code in your invitation: “Come with Peranakan kebaya or cheong sam”

Seasons of Love Perhaps you are dreaming of a wedding in the snow, a peranakan romantic summer night evening or an enchanting garden wedding in the spring, or perhaps a beautiful warm autumn at sunset Text by A.J. | Photographer: Reo Sinarta | Noir Studio +62 878 530 38889

Warm Rustic Autumn I love autumn at sunset, when you can turn to the warm colours of autumn with the leaves on the trees bursting with colour and the orange and red hues from an autumn sunset. Go to the rustic autumn theme with a natural wood set-up combined with luxurious white roses and candles. The combination works really well with a rustic wedding theme and the lovely fresh vibe and colour of warm autumn.

Rose Garden in the Winter Most people think that winter is white, frosty and dry, but baby pink and white roses in the middle of the table centrepiece can warm the heart and soul. A glass table and silver tableware will add a final touch to that romantic winter wedding theme.

Pop Up My Spring Spring is the most popular wedding idea; it’s a warmer and more beautiful time of year to say “I do”, with the blossoms of the flowers and trees. Think of the box and choose spring colors with dramatic mix-and-match tropical flowers, white roses and tulips.

After the bed is set up, a boy will be invited to roll on it to denote fertility and pray for the married couple to have a son. For the same reason, the bed is sprinkled with red dates, oranges, lotus seeds, peanuts, pomegranates and other fruits. Then the bed is left untouched until the wedding day. Couples still honour this custom, the one difference being that the bed is now usually only set up the day before the wedding.

DAY OF THE WEDDING Procession from Groom’s House to Obtain the Bride. The dim of firecrackers, loud gongs and drums marked the start of the procession from the groom’s home. The groom led the procession accompanied by a child as an omen of his future sons, and the bridal sedan chair was proceeded by attendants with lanterns and banners, musicians, and a ‘dancing’ lion or unicorn. On arriving at the bride’s house, the groom’s party was met by the bride’s friends, who would not ‘surrender ’the bride until they were satisfied by red packets of money, ang pau from

the groom’s representative. This was the occasion of much good-natured haggling before the two parties could reach an agreement.

Hair Combing Ritual In the hair combing ritual, the bride,

usually the night before the wedding day, will bathe in water infused with pomelo or pomegranate leaves. She then puts on clean clothes and combs her hair four times in front of an open window, from which the moon can be seen clearly. A successful married woman will help her comb her hair. The ritual is said to help the new couple realize all their dreams. The first stroke of the comb represents a long life together for the couple, “from the start of the marriage until the end.” The second stroke represents a “harmonious relationship until old age,” and the third the desire for “lots of sons and grandsons” (though nowadays, daughters and granddaughters will do). The last stroke represents “monetary wealth and for a long and lasting marriage.” In the past, both the bride and the groom performed this ritual, but now, only the bride does it, and that only in certain families.

Tea Ceremony

Tea, of course, is China’s national drink but serving tea is also a sign of respect. Lotus seeds and two red dates are added to the tea to help the newlyweds have children as soon as possible. The sweetness of tea is also a prayer for the relationship between the bride and her new family. The tradition of serving tea to elder relatives of the couple is still commonly followed in modern Chinese society. Families hold the ceremony whenever it is convenient, either on the morning before the ceremony or in the afternoon after. The most important thing is that everyone in both families is able to come together and take part in the ceremony. Traditionally, after the wedding ceremony, the newlyweds serve tea (holding the teacups with both hands), inviting the groom’s elders to drink tea by addressing them by formal title. The general rule is to have the woman on the left side and the man on the right side. The people being served will sit in chairs, while the bride and groom kneel. The newlyweds serve tea in order, starting with the groom’s parents then proceeding from the oldest family members to the youngest. In return, the newlyweds receive lucky red envelopes stuffed with money or jewellery.

The Enchantment of Chinese Weddings The richness of Chinese traditions is shown in their weddings

he main feature of a Chinese wedding is family: they are everywhere. Family bonds are big for the Chinese, and the purpose of a wedding, aside from being a celebration of love, is to continue the ancestral line and to create a union between two families. As the world has changed, Chinese wedding traditions have dropped away or evolved into their modern form. But some traditions persist, making the big day fraught with symbolism for Chinese couples. The ceremony itself symbolises the harmonious relationship between people and nature. After the wedding, the newlyweds usually burn money and food as an offering to the gods. Then firecrackers are lit, their explosions indicating that the offerings have been accepted and the relationship between people and nature maintained.

PRE-WEDDING Setting the Date In traditional Chinese custom, after the proposal was received the next step was to obtain the “Eight Letters” of the bride,

based on the bride’s birth year, month, date and time. The Eight Letters were then calculated by a fortune-teller, to determine if the bride and groom were really a match. After that was settled, the fortune-teller would determine the best date for the wedding day, according to the bride and groom’s dates of birth. While this custom has largely been set aside, some Chinese families still ask a geomancer to determine an auspicious date for a couple to tie the knot. After the wedding date is set, the families of the couple will arrange a Betrothal Day, which also points out the formal coming together of the two families as one big family. The groom’s family will presents gifts that symbolise fertility and prosperity in Chinese culture, known as Grand Gifts. All the gifts should come in even numbers, meaning “good things double” in Chinese culture. Modern betrothal gifts include gold or diamond jewellery. And then the happy couple are considered engaged.

Wedding Cakes Following that, Double Happiness Cakes will be sent to relatives along with

wedding invitations. The cake is also known as the Dragon & Phoenix because it has dragon and phoenix imprints on the surface. Nowadays, wedding cakes are served to guests at the ceremony and are more like Western wedding cakes.

Wedding Dowry The next step is for the bride-to-be’s parents to draw up a dowry wish list and present it to the groom’s parents. The dowry is composed of daily necessities for the couple’s new home to help them start a new life together. Traditionally, this included bedding, linens, a dining set and more. These days it includes more modern appliances like a washing machine, refrigerator or television, but can be as ambitious as a whole apartment.

The Bridal Bed The next step is a custom that is still followed to this day, having to do with the bridal bed. As part of the custom, the groom picks a date and good and healthy man will help set up the bridal bed a few weeks before the wedding day.

Chinese Wedding Dress In modern Chinese weddings, the bride usually changes dresses at least three times on the big day. A white wedding gown, borrowed from Western customs, is worn for the church ceremony, a traditional Chinese bridal dress for the tea ceremony and reception, a traditional wedding dress in Chinese culture is red, which is considered good luck and is also a strong colour that can drive evil spirits away. And a cocktail dress to greet the guests and see them off at the door. This last dress is known as a song ke.

Wedding Banquet At a Chinese wedding banquet, eight dishes are usually served – not including the dessert. In Chinese, the word “eight” sounds like “good luck.” Originally, the wedding feast included fish dishes, roast suckling pig, pigeon, chicken cooked with red oil, lobster and a dessert of buns filled with lotus seeds. Each dish had its own meaning. Fish, in Chinese, has the same pronunciation as “abundance,” which means that the newlyweds will be blessed with wealth. Roast pig, usually served whole, symbolises the bride’s purity and virginity. Pigeon is for a peaceful future, while chicken cooked in red oil symbolises a prosperous life. In Chinese, lobster is literally called “dragon shrimp,” and having it together with chicken indicates that the yin and the yang elements in the family are in balance.

Nuptial Chamber After the ceremony, in traditional Chinese custom, the newlyweds were led to the bridal chamber where wine was poured into two cups linked by a red thread. They would have a few sips then exchange cups and drink it down. The room was open to allow friends to tease the new couple in a tradition called Nao Dong Fang. The teasing and jokes were said to drive away the devil hiding in the wedding chamber to take the life of the just-married couple. The only way to drive the devil away was through laughter, so couples would gather as many friends as possible.

Tastes Around the World

Wedding cakes are more than icing and chocolate: they are also filled with tradition and meaning. Here’s a roundup of wedding cake traditions from around the globe. Text by. A.J | Photo courtesy of Debora & Patrick by IMAJ imajing

edding cakes have been present at wedding ceremonies for centuries. There has always been a lot of symbolism associated with the wedding cake. One of the most obvious symbolic traditions is the cake’s white colour to symbolize virginity and purity. The wedding cake was originally known as the bride’s cake therefore the colour white became common because the cake needed to reflect the bride. The cake-cutting ceremony is more than just a standard, expected part of a wedding reception. Its symbolic meaning is crucial to the newlyweds because they are not just eating together; it is the first task they are actually performing together as husband and wife. This is one tradition that most of us have witnessed many times. The couple’s action of feeding each other the first piece of cake represents their desire to care for one another. One wedding cake tradition common to most cultures is sharing the cake with guests. If everyone has a piece, it is thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, fertility and prosperity to the couple. Wedding pastries are a nearly universal tradition, but the actual wedding cake, and the ceremony surrounding it, varies widely around the world. Here are some other wedding cake traditions from around the world: Korea: Many American-style wedding cakes would be considered too sweet for Koreans. They opt instead for a cake

made of ground steamed rice covered in red bean powder. A tiered sponge cake covered in non-dairy whipped cream is also a popular treat. China: The traditional Chinese wedding cake is a massive, many-layered creation. The layers represent a ladder of success for the couple. Traditionally, the bride and groom cut the cake from the bottom up, starting with pieces for each parent and grandparent, who are all fed by the newlyweds. Germany: German couples often serve up a rich nut or genoise sponge cake to their guests. The cake is usually laced with liqueur or syrup; filled with jam, marzipan or nougat; and covered in fondant or ganache. Any use of artificial colouring on a cake is considered a major faux pas. France: The French traditionally serve up what is known as a croquembouche. This tall tower of cream-filled pastries is coated in caramel and formed into a pyramid shape, and makes quite a statement. Italy: Wedding cakes are regional in Italy, and in some areas cake is not served at all. In those where they are, taste trumps decoration. In many areas, the custom is to serve a millefoglie, an Italian cake made from layers of light filo pastry, chocolate and vanilla creams, and topped with strawberries. No Italian wedding would be complete without zuppa inglese. Scrumptiously filled with chocolate custard, vanilla custard, rum cream and fruit, tiers of pound cake are elaborately trimmed with flower blooms of royal icing.

remember not to indulge too much. Add some honey, which is richly nutritious and high in fructose, to give you the energy to move and enjoy every sensation.

Gemini Need a mentally stimulating atmosphere to fulfil their desire for communication and social relationships. Pears, which have been said to have the ability to induce love, are just the thing to soothe your nervous energy. Casual in eating, Geminis need to have more raw vegetables like celery, which contains androstetone, a kind of pheromone. Chew it to aid in concentration or eat the whole stalk to induce lust.

Cancer Usually fond of food and hearty eaters. Noted for moodiness, they love pastries and sweets. To neutralize this wet mood, drink Champagne for a warm glow in the body. Try to make use of ginger or garlic in cooking, which helps the blood circulate more freely throughout the body. So, if you want to heat up, you know what to eat.

Leo Enjoy being the centre of attention. Generous and noble, Leos do everything with a great amount of energy. They enjoy fine and lavish dining. Caviar, being a luxury and rich in minerals, is truly an uplifting delicacy. Enjoy it slowly to savour the taste. Chamomile tea every afternoon is calming, helping Leos to smooth out some of their rough edges. Some sesame is said to help any fertility problems.

Virgo The most workaholic of all the star signs, they strive for perfection. Meticulous

in work yet careless in eating, Virgos need fruit to freshen up. Exotic fruits such as papaya and avocado should be eaten daily. They may be sexual in shape, but they also contain vitamins, minerals, and fibre. The same goes with peaches, which are said to increase fertility and may help you win someone’s heart.

Libra Libras are very up and down in terms of mood, just like their symbol, The Scale. One day they are up in heave, the next down in the depths of despair. Libras, with their artistic moods, need equilibrium. Eat almonds, which are high in protein and vitamin E, to strengthen and rejuvenate your body. Coconut is exotic, but it is also nutritious. Try virgin coconut oil. Drinking peppermint tea is said to heal and balance your inner self.

Scorpio Have very differing natures. There is the secretive, timid nature, and then there is the explosive and quarrelling one. The best food for Scorpios is seafood. Oysters are a good source of calcium, which aids in blood clotting and helps carry nerve impulses. Mussels act almost the same way. Ginseng improves circulation and stimulates the body. Eat some and prove the long-held belief that every Scorpio is amazing in bed.

Sagittarius Love adventure. Fun-loving Sags are open, honest, tolerant, and outgoing. Eat grapes for the antioxidants to keep you young inside and out, and remember to enjoy your grapes with your partner for a sensually

stirring experience. Currants and berries are also tasty, and contain high doses of vitamin C and minerals for increasing your hormones. Try nutmeg seasoning, said to be good for reproductive organs.

Capricorn Practical and willing to utilize any means to get what they want. Ambitious and industrious, they aim for social and material achievement. This male energy requires another phallic-shaped vegetable, namely asparagus. It is said you need to eat asparagus three nights in a row to achieve maximum potential. Go for truffles if you feel intrigued, the musky scent could be stimulating.

Aquarius Known as eccentrics. Though unconventional in their way of thinking, they get along great with other people. Fruits are good for Aquarius, but choose oranges to purify and cleanse your mind and body. Strawberries as a love food make a good dish for a romantic time. Star fruit will have your body emitting sensuality. Why stop at these fruits? Explore.

Pisces

Big dreamers. Loving, affectionate, and kind, they are good-natured most of the time. Smooth and sensitive, they need fresh fruits to leave them radiating beauty. The sensation of eating fresh figs and pomegranates sends the all imaginative Pisces soaring high. Both fruits when opened resemble female sexual organs. Always have white wine to lower inhibitions. Drink a little, fantasize a lot.

ost people have heard of aphrodisiac food. It is believed that some foods can increase your sexual appetite, even give you a boost in the sexual drive department. The term aphrodisiac derives from the name of the sensual love goddess Aphrodite. Throughout history various foods and drinks have been said to enhance pleasure in sexual activity and to increase fertility. Some of these foods are generally really good for your body, others are just bizarre: you don’t want to

go adding ground rhino horn or dried seahorses to your diet. History also teaches us that when a food bears a resemblance to a sexual organ, it might just be good for that organ. In the spirit of Valentine’s, let’s play with our food, and our mood. We take a look at which foods are best for each star sign.

Aries Want to be first in everything, and generally convey an expression of aggressiveness and masculinity. This male

quality is represented in the banana, which has long been considered a phallic symbol. Lush and creamy, this fruit is rich in potassium and vitamin B, which is good for sex hormone production. Wholegrain foods and barley will keep your body full of vitality so you can keep on burning.

Taurus Enjoy eating, sometimes even too much. They also love to touch and to be touched. Chocolate, being a stimulant to increase activity and the desire for physical contact, is a must, as long as you

L

ove is unique and hard to define. It has to grow and evolve over time. Kevin has known Edith for more than 10 years. They first met at a restaurant in Los Angeles through a mutual friend. Why did Edith and Kevin fall in love with each other? “One of many things in our relationship that made us fall in love with each other is that we focus on how to give our best to each other in order to bring out the best in both of us. Among other things, we believe in mutual respect, sacrifice and, most important,, placing God first in our relationship”. It took five months for Edith to plan the wedding, choosing ”Rustic Tuscan” as their wedding party theme, and the event was romantic, intimate, personal and laid back. Some 130 families and close friends attended the couple’s wedding at Royal Santrian on 19 January 2014.

The couple fell in love with Royal Santrian the first time they saw the resort, and immediately chose the property as their wedding venue. Not only was the property beautiful; it also had everything that the couple looked for in their wedding: a warm atmosphere, beachfront location and mouth-watering food. “Our family, loved ones, nearest and dearest friends celebrated our special day together with us in the most beautiful setting. We are really touched and honoured by the efforts of our family and friends to come a long way to our wedding in Bali. In addition, it’s always comforting to hear very positive comments from them regarding the venue, atmosphere, and of course abundant food and drink. Knowing they have come a long way, we want them to enjoy the moment and have a great experience throughout,” they both said

about what they loved the most about the wedding. The fact that it didn’t rain was the most special element for the couple on their wedding day. “We were very concerned about it because it might change the whole experience dramatically. It’s hard to single out a specific moment because the experience as a whole, from the day we arrived in Bali, during the ceremony and reception, and also family time the following days, was a special moment in our life together”, said the couple.

“Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses. - Ann Landers

Simply Romantic Debora Ekaputri Gondokusumo and Patrick Anthony Kalona exchanged vows on 12 April 2014 at The Royal Santrian, Bali. The best way to describe their wedding is “simply romantic”

D

ebora recalled how the couple first met two years ago. “It’s a long story but, essentially,, we were introduced to each other by my good friend’s brother-inlaw, who happens to be Patrick’s cousin’s brother-in-law, Steve Hadi. One day, Steve asked for my phone number and said he would like to ask me about marketing stuff and he would introduce me to a guy who hasd a similar profile as me. So I gave him my number. “Then one day Patrick called me; the

first meeting was more like a business occasion but eventually we felt that we could talk to each other quite well so we agreed to meet more often. The rest is history”. “Patrick is a responsible guy, very committed to everything he does, and we never have big fights! If we have a disagreement, we focus on the solution and do not dwelling on the issues.” That’s the reason why Debora fell in love with him. What did the couple love most about their party? “Almost everything!

The preparations were so smooth, with no argument whatsoever from either side of the family as everybody was very supportive and understanding. The party turned out to be very intimate and warm, and the guests were very easyily engaged; the vendors were all very easy to work with. I was able to put fine detail into every aspect (decor, dress, rundown, etc). But most important, we were able to get our favourite pastor and worship leader for the religious ceremony!”

Agam and Ivana first met when they were both helping with preparations for the wedding of Agam’s cousin. At the time, Ivana was the contact person for souvenirs and needed advice from Agam about the wrapper colour that would suit the decoration of the wedding. Agam fell in love with Ivana not only because she is beautiful but

each also compliments the other in so many ways. Ivana fell for Agam as he made her feel secure and comfortabe. Agam, who works in the wedding industry as part of Steve’s Decor, chose a forest theme for the wedding. The decor by Agam, with the help of Steve from Steve’s Decor, brought an outdoor ambience into the ballroom,

using black wallcoverings with twinkling stars and trees scattered around the ballroom. Around 600 guests joined the celebration, held on 10 December 2013, at Pakuwon Imperial Ballroom, Surabaya. The religious ceremony was held two days earlier, and the best moment for the couple was when the priest blessed their marriage.

It was love at first sight for Ida Bagus Ngurah Agung Kumbayana when he met Ni Luh Wayan Sekarentini. So it was inevitable that the pair went on to celebrate the next step of their partnership before an audience of family and friends with a series of traditional Balinese wedding rituals. Included was a special evening on 16 April to mark the groom’s birthday; the festivities culminated with a grand luncheon on 19 April at his home at Griya Gede Keniten of Sanur. Over 1,000 guests arrived in a stream of luxury vehicles and stopped traffic as the entire village of Sanur enjoyed the revelry. Seated in a private VIP enclosure was former president Megawati Soekarnoputri accompanied by her daughter Puan Maharani and an entourage of Bali leaders. Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka

Pangestu, also came with her husband and a following of ministerial officials. She was keen to abandon her VIP seat to move closer to observe this once-ina-lifetime ritual for Sanur’s notable firstborn Brahmana son who (uniquely only to Sanur) is also a member of blue-blood royalty. The groom’s younger brother, Ida Bagus Gde Sidhartaputra, on behalf of the family, extended a warm welcome to all present. However, in the tradition of all weddings, it was the bride who radiantly stole the spotlight. Resplendent in a Balinese costume fit for a queen, she blushed ever so often at the endless flow of blessings and compliments. But it was an uplifting speech filled with age-old wisdoms for a happy marriage conducted by Chief Staff of the Air Force, Marshall Ida Bagus Putu Dunia, that brought knowing glances between the bride and groom.

Sailing the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea, Calisto has quite the story behind her: Built in 1944 for the US Navy, Calisto was originally a YMS-1 class minesweeper that served

the Royal Navy of Britain in World War II. After the war, she continued to serve for another decade, and in 1954 was bought by Thomas Loel Guinness, the Irish tycoon and former MP, who also owned the famed La Calypso of Jacques Cousteau. Calisto was transformed into Guinness’ personal luxury yacht, and just like La Calypso, Calisto was, and still is, all about old-world charm and high-sea exploration. She catered to the boating pleasures of the elite and well-heeled and sailed the waters of Greece and Britain, roamed the seas off the Antibes and Sicily, and travelled all over Europe in style, often in the company of celebrities and politicians. In the late 1950s, a prestigious French family purchased Calisto and maintained the vessel for the next 40 years. Today, Calisto serves primarily as a charter cruise, and options for family and honeymoon cruises are aplenty, allowing the greatest flexibility for privacy-inclined couples or families. Calisto’s captain,

Philippe Cathala, is more than happy to share his expertise to help draw up an itinerary that takes in points of special interest to the newlyweds – whether hiking, snorkelling, diving, exploring nature – all of which are on offer in abundance in the area. Early morning dives, beach barbecues, cooking classes and the like can all be arranged. In addition to seven cabins, which can accommodate up to 12 guests at any one time, the luxurious ship also boasts a salon, entertainment area, dining room and a cellar that is one of the ship’s best-kept secrets. Each of the three luxurious double staterooms and two spacious twin cabins comes with en-suite showers/bathrooms. One of the two cosy single cabins also has its own attached bathroom. All cabins are fitted with top of the range, 100-percent Egyptian cotton bed linens and each shower/bathroom is accessorized with Molton Brown toiletries. www.calistocruises.com

Sealed with a Kiss There are millions ways to express love to your partner, and a kiss is one of them. A kiss is a physical way of showing love to your spouse, that can provide additional excitement. Text by Irina Jusuf

A

ccording to some researchers, a kiss can help you relieve stress, thus providing a positive effect for the body. A sense of comfort and calm are obtained after kissing that can help the mind become more relaxed after facing various problems. However, it turns out some kind of kisses also have their own art and sexiness. Here are some types of kiss that you can try with your partner to make the relationship more varied, with different taste sensations: Earlobe Kiss The earlobe is one erogenous zone in the body. Suck your husband’s earlobe and kiss it gently. Try not to make any loud noise or sudden movement that might startle him. Bonus points if you whisper something sexy. Spiderman Kiss Try to mimic a kiss as in the movie Spiderman (2002), the position of Spiderman hanging upside down while kissing his girlfriend. The way to do it is when your partner is lying down and you come from the opposite side to experience the magical power of a kiss: Quite dramatic! Hand Kiss Kiss the back of your partner’s hand tenderly, then slowly spread to the top. And then, you will find what you want to do next to your partner’s body. Lip gloss kiss All you need to do is pick your favorite flavour of lip gloss and apply it to the entire lip. Then transfer the lip gloss to your partner’s lips. Yum! Sealed with a kiss. Cheek Kiss This kiss is usually given on the first date

as a sign, “I love you”. Kissing a cheek can be more intimate as long as you know how to do it. First, put your hand on his shoulder and just before you do it, rub your lover’s cheeks with your lips and kiss her/him with great tenderness. Back Kiss There’s nothing sexier than kissing your lover’s naked back. You’ll find your partner will be pleasantly surprised. Quickie Kiss You can give this quickie kiss at any time to surprise your spouse, even when you’re busy. Kiss her/his nose, then kiss her/his lips. It’s a very simple kiss that only takes a few seconds. No doubt! Belly Kiss When you have time alone with your lover, surprise him/her by giving a soft kiss on his/ her belly. While kissing, you can also try smooth belly rubbing and tickling your lover to achieve a more intimate and romantic atmosphere in bed. Vampire Kiss A kiss on the neck can be very exciting and tempting. This type of kiss can also be used as foreplay before you make love with your spouse. Rain kiss There is nothing more romantic than kissing your lover when you’re soaking wet in the rain. Don’t hesitate to try it; you’ll definitely find it passionate and want to try it again and again. The Freeze Kiss Put an ice cube into your mouth and kiss your spouse, while passing the cube to his mouth with your tongue. The icy sensation will give you both a pleasant shock.

The Lip-Sucking Kiss Sucking on your partner’s lower lip while kissing is the most romantic and sexy way to signal to your partner that you are in the mood for love. The Hot and Cold Kiss Lick your partner’s lips to make them warm and then blow on them to make them cold. French kiss The French kiss may be France’s best gift to the world. This is the most common type of kiss we often heard. This type of kiss is also known as a ‘tongue kiss’ because it involves the tongue kissing. With this kiss, couples will compete with the open mouth position and let the tongue play. Tongue kissing This one is a variation on the French kiss. When you and your partner play with your tongues, occasionally suck her/his tongue. I believe you will both feel ‘hot’ and sexier. The Nip Kiss Slightly nibble on your partner’s lips while kissing. Take it slow and easy to make it pleasurable. Do it gently and not painfully. Make it erotic and full of sensation. Butterfly Kiss This is where a couple kiss body parts, such as the cheeks, the tip of the lips, forehead or stomach. Try to flutter your eyelashes while doing it until your partner feels amused. So, what kind of kiss will you and your partner choose to create a warm and romantic atmosphere tonight? I hope it will be hot and very sexy …

Venice, Queen of the Adriatic The most touching and romantic gift that I’ve ever received from my beloved husband is a surprise trip to Venice. I’m like flying in the sky. For a long time, Venezia has had a reputation as one of the most romantic cities in the world. And ... yes, it truly is. Text and Photos by Sita S. Phulpin

I

t’s not surprising at all that Venice, inhabited by almost 300,000 souls, is chosen by so many couples to celebrate their important love moments. Venice has all it needs to be nominated a romantic city: beautiful architecture, warm and charming colour, a lagoon and of course … the famous gondolas that cross 177 canals! With such a panorama, each place is a perfect background to immortalize that special moment. There’s no reason to miss the nice picture. It’s a real paradise for photography lovers.

I

Incontestable, Venice is an amazing magnum opus ever created by human beings. Venetians owe much to their ancestors who linked 118 isles by more than 435 bridges. It feels as if the city is floating on water, which has made this pearl of the Adriatic Sea one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Each year, millions of tourists arrive to admire this magnificient city of canals. Since 1987, Venice and its lagoon have been on the Unesco World Heritage list.

Long history

Although the date of its foundation is still debated due to a lack of reliable historical sources, everyone agrees about the origin of Venice’s ancestors. They came from the 10th Roman region in the north-west extremity of the Adriatic. The name “Venice” is derived from the word “Veneti”, the name of their ancestors, ancient Italian people who lived in the cities and countries in this region: Padua, Aquileia, Treviso, Altino and Concordia. Traditionally, Venetians believe that Venice was built for the first time at Rivus Altos ou Rivo Alto in the 5th century by three consuls from Padua. On 25 March 25 421 BC they built a commercial office and the foundations of San Giacomo di Rialto church in San Polo Sestiere (a district in an Italian city divided into six parts). The Rivo Alto is now known as the Rialto with its famous Ponto di Rialto or Rialto bridge, the oldest in Venice that crosses the Grand Canal, connecting San Polo and San Marco districts.

Venice as a city was founded at the end of the 6th century by refugees from the regions in the north of Italy, which was invaded by the Lombard people from Hungary. Gradually, Venice developed its political and commercial power. Thanks to maritime commerce, Venice become one of the important economic powers in Europe. It was a place of commercial exchange between Mediterannean countries, the Byzantine empire and the Islamic world (especially the Ottoman empire). Led by the doge (duke or chief magistrate) between 697 and 1797, Venice was capital of the Serenissima Repubblica de Venezia (Republic of Venice). Unfortunately, after 11 centuries of glory, this city-state came to an end. France (during Napoleonic times) and Austria occupied Venice alternately before it became part of Italy until now. Its long history through centuries and all those different civilisations imbued a unique character to Venice and contributed to its dazzling beauty.

JUST THE TWO OF US

In the afternoon, after a long walk, it’s nice to take a break in a café in this piazza and enjoy a cup of Italian coffee. Before nightfall, we walked to the northern part of the piazza and sat there for a while to admire the atmosphere and lovely view in front of us. It was very pleasant. Unexpected, we saw a big cruise ship passing. It was strange to see such a big ship in the Grand Canal at close quarters. Suddenly, the Grand Canal looked small. To finish our day, dinner in an Italian restaurant was not bad idea at all. It would be a big mistake not to sample food in an Italian restaurant while in Italy. Most of them offer pizza and spaghetti with many flavours. Their thin pizzas and famous black spaghetti (made with squid ink) ….oh mama mia! They’re so delicious ! Accompanied by a botlle of Italian wine, our dinner was perfect. How to go By Plane From Marcopolo airport Venice, which is located in 12 km north of city, there are some alternatives to reach the city: • private water taxi (most expensive) • autobus until Piazzale di Roma. You may have to take a vaporetto if your hotel is not in this area. • take a vaporetto until to one of the waterbus stops. It takes more and less one hour.

Note : even though taking a vaporetto from the airport to San Marc Piazza, the historical centre of Venice is not the quickest route, but it’s not a disappointing decision. During a 1 hour and 10 minute trip, you will enjoy a beautiful panorama of the little islands spread along the Adriatic sea lagoon. By train From Roma Termini Station in Rome, you can reach Venezia Santa Lucia station in Venice by high speed train operated by Trenitalia, the Italian national railway company. It takes more and less 4 hours. By car It’s possible to do it but not advisable. The furthest you can drive your car into Venice is Piazzale di Roma, where you can leave your vehicle. But parking fees are quite expensive. As Venice is a car-free city, from Piazzale Roma, you have to take a vaporetto to reach other places within. It’s better to forget about taking a car to Venice. Where to stay Hotel Gorizia la Valigia (3*). Address : Calle dei Fabbri 4696 - San Marco. Nice hotel, near important tourist spots, Piazza San Marco and Rialto bridge.

Honeymooning the Beautiful Blue Danube Despite the recent flooding of the Danube, the worst in recorded history, the beauty of this vital waterway and the ancient cities on its banks, continue to draw honeymooners from across the globe, with many choosing lines like Scenic Cruises to get a true sense of life on the river, discovers Nick Walton. Mine, also known as the Salzbergwerk Dürrnberg, isn’t for the claustrophobic, but if you’re ok with close quarters it’s a fascinating opportunity to see the origins of Salzburg’s name and prosperity up close. The mine has been worked for over 7,000 years and is now an interactive museum where tourists can dress in white overalls and brave the chilly air of the endless tunnels which run beneath the Dürrnberg Plateau, learning the value of salt in ancient times and how miners toiled in the depths so that the nobility might have their precious mineral.

the Danube, splitting the waterway into the old Danube, a man-made channel known as the New Danube, and another channel called the Donaukanal or Danube Canal. Because of this sophisticated flood prevention system, Vienna was spared much of the damaged caused by the recent floods. In Europe’s capital of culture we stroll around the city’s New Palace and through the rose gardens of the Volksgarten before stopping for a Viennese coffee in the bustling Pestsäule pedestrian mall. Even with exceptional excursions along the route, Scenic’s itineraries always allow plenty of “you” time. That evening, as the sun sets behind the eye catching Kaiser-Jubiläums

cathedral in Mexikoplatz, guests dress in their finery and depart the ship for the majestic Palais Liechtenstein, for a champagne reception amidst the Prince of Liechtenstein’s private art collection, before a private performance of ballet, opera and classical music, including Strauss’ famed Blue Danube waltz. It’s a truly enchanting evening held within the gilded intimacy of a regal reception hall and a far cry from usual conceptions of cruising. It couldn’t be more of a contrast the next day as we take turns to slip down wooden slides worn smooth by the behinds of Austrian miners, deep within the mountains surrounding Salzburg. Scenic’s tour into the Hallein Salt

We visit Salzburg, Unesco-listed thanks to the preservation of its baroque architecture, on another guided walking tour, this one ending at St Peter Stiftskeller, the oldest restaurant in Central Europe and once a place of pilgrimage for high society plying the river. Today Salzburg is better known as a backdrop to The Sound of Music than for its salt empire, and each year hundreds of thousands of tourists visit to sip coffee laced with Mozart chocolate liqueur (the composer was born here) and pose before the city’s iconic fountain. But Salzburg’s wealth came not just from the salt in its mountains but from the city’s proximity to the Danube, that vital highway north and south that made trade so practical. As clouds begin to gather on the high peaks in the distance, the river, and our schedule, calls to us and we return to the ship for a final meal – a delectable silver service Table La Rive degustation, matched with South African wines and served in the intimate Portobello’s restaurant. Through floor-to-ceiling windows life on the river around us continues as the evening’s light fades across the water, the day ahead promising to tempt travellers with new, undiscovered destinations, just around the river bend. Travel Essentials Getting There: Lufthansa offer direct flights from Hong Kong to Frankfurt and Munich, and an extensive network across Europe, including Budapest. www. lufthansa.com Scenic Cruises’ fleet of space ship luxury river cruisers offer regular departures on the Danube from US$3,445 per person. http://us.scenictours.com/

Scenic Cruises specialize in excursions so while we’re exploring the tunnels beneath Castle Hill other passengers are walking the city’s historic city centre on guided tours or taking a dip in one of Budapest’s acclaimed natural thermal baths. We rejoin the ship in the late afternoon, setting sail for Vienna with a cocktail event as the sun slips below the peaks of Buda. River cruising is very different from cruising on the ocean. There is a proximity to the experience; a sense that at any moment, around the next bend, charming hamlets, time-weathered fortresses or even hillside vineyards will appear. Because of this there aren’t conventional lecture sessions; instead each guest uses a digital device that’s part MP3 player and part tour guide. Using GPS, the Scenic Tailormade device slips into a pocket and with headphones gives real time commentary along the route, whether you’re sitting on the top deck, in your sun lounge or even in bed. Tour guides can also use the device when leading excursions, meaning groups don’t have to yell their way across Europe. That night I watch eagerly as we pass through out first river lock. We’re very fortunate; the recent floods played havoc with the system of locks on the Danube but by the time we make our way north the congestion has cleared and it’s clear sailing into the towering concrete ‘chamber’, where we wait patiently, only feet away from another ship, as the water level beneath us rises to that of the river to the north. I watch from the ship’s top deck as the water level within the chamber inches towards the slightly turbulent waters beyond. Eventually the river spills over into the chamber, the gates slipping into the depths to allow our passage onwards. We cruise through Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia early the next morning, passing under the city’s Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising, known locally as the UFO because of the flying saucer-like restaurant atop its central pylon. Up river we pause in the shadows of the medieval castle Burgruine Dürnstein, where King Richard was once imprisoned, so that passengers can make use of the ship’s electro-assisted bicycles and rise along the riverfront.

Arriving in Vienna, Austria, by noon, we board Scenic buses and backtrack across a picturesque landscape of yellow canola and towering wind mills. Other passengers are touring Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace or visiting the Spanish Riding School, home to the famous Lipizzaner Stallions, but Maggie and I choose the walking tour through Bratislava, another historic capital that’s enjoying a tourism renaissance. It’s a beautiful day in Bratislava, the midday sun gleaming off the golden halos of saints carved in stone at the entrance to the Old Quarter. High above, crowning a forested hill overlooking the Danube, the flags dance in the breeze atop the

formidable Bratislava Castle. The city is increasingly geared towards European tourism, but on our weekend visit the nightclubs and restaurants of the cobbled old quarter are shut and the sun warms the smooth stone facades of merchant homes and family chapels. Here and there tiny crown insignias on the ground depict the traditional procession route for royal weddings and at the centre of town, in a leafy square, a weekend market sells hand-knitted Christmas tree decorations and truffles the size of golf balls to church goers leaving mass at St Martin’s Cathedral. Maggie and I spend the afternoon back in Vienna making the most of the sun. The city has long tamed

I

want to surprise my wife by arranging a romantic getaway in Hong Kong. I wanted to give her nothing but the best, so we chose The Peninsula Hong Kong. Having stayed in so many hotels around the world, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. Well ... I was wrong. At The Peninsula Hong Kong I encountered numerous surprises. We had such a wonderful time and were incredibly impressed by the hotel. I have to admit that our stay at The Peninsula Hong Kong is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The journey begins with a welcome and greeting by The Peninsula’s airport concierge at the flight’s aerobridge, personal escort to immigration, luggage handling and then we find ourselves sitting comfortably in one of the fleet of green Rolls-Royces that whisked us away in complete silence to the hotel. Upon arrival, we were immediately escorted to our room for an in-room check-in. We stay at a deluxe suite with harbour view, offering a great view of Hong Kong’s amazing harbour, which we can clearly see from the comfort of our room’s oversized windows. The view is simply awe-inspiring. The attention to detail in every part of our suite deserves a high praise. The Peninsula’s goal seems to be to fulfil

every need that a guest might express by preparing for all the details you could think of, but one step ahead of you. Everything you need is all there before you even look for it or before you think you’ll need it: from a simple thing such as a ballpen next to the laundry bag, the hidden Nespresso machine and the welcome Chinese tea with a traditional tea set to give you a taste of Hong Kong tradition. There’s also the his and hers sinks, the charging station with a whole range of power adapters to suit various mobile phone/tablet brands, perfect for international travellers, complimentary wireless internet with strong, stable signal and complimentary local phone calls. VOIP international Calls, in-room printer, movie channel on the TV with the latest releases on demand and a complimentary Mini Cooper to take you to any destination of your choice, with chauffeur and mobile phone, complete the picture . There’s even a nail dryer for your last-minute nail polish. Our suite was a perfectly blend of modern black wood gloss and Asian touches through its chic designer couch, black wood gloss and fabric wallpaper, and a high-tech tablet that controlled the room. Our suite was very spacious, it is obvious that The Peninsula Hong Kong pays attention to the bathroom, which

is equipped with mood lighting, TV and music panel, and lovely toiletries from Oscar de la renta, which you can enjoy only at The Peninsula. Privacy is another thing that this hotel seems wants to offer its guests by providing a valet box in each room. This minimizes disturbance from the door bell, while the availability of electronic note books for ordering or sourcing information during your stay such as changing TV channel, in-room dining to simple extra towels are all part of guest pampering at The Peninsula. We found so many reasons why we fell in love with The Peninsula during our stay: the variety of well designed restaurants plus rooftop cocktail lounge are a haven for foodies while the spa is a perfect sanctuary as well as a very good way to relax after all-day shopping around Hong Kong. The heated indoor swimming pool overlooking the terrace and harbour is the perfect place to burn off all the delicious food we indulged in, as well as the ideal venue for relaxing and admiring the beautiful view. Location, Location, Location … Whether you are in Hong Kong for business or leisure, whether you are a genuine tourist or a shopaholic, even if you are honeymooning just like me, The Peninsula Hong Kong is located at the heart of the

most vibrant part of Hong Kong. My wife is over the moon when she finds that the hotel’s own shopping arcade has premium brands from Louis Vitton to Goyard, from Hermes to Chanel, and many more. Shopping has never been this convenient and easy. If you are looking for something else, just take a step out of the hotel’s side entrances and you will find Jordan Street and Nathan street which has hundreds of shops, supermarket, local eateries and an MTR (subsway) station. Right across the hotel is the famous Avenue of the Stars that always has something going on to entertain you. The hotel is comfortably located five minutes away from the ferry terminal to access Macau if you plan a short getaway or want to try your luck at one of Macau’s casinos. Thanks to this amazing location, the beautiful romantic view of Hong Kong’s harbour comes in the package – an instant cure for sore eyes. Another extraordinary thing about The Peninsula Hong Kong is the service. The level of professionalism and friendliness of the staff at the hotel is simply one of the best that I have experienced at many hotels around the world. The staff at The Peninsula are full of consideration, the service is discreet, quick, unhurried and utterly unobtrusive. This kind of level of service is a result of the long service of most staff, which creates a high sense of belonging, the staff giving their very best in looking after guests. During our stay we met a number of staffs who have been part of the Peninsula family for year. And we were told that one staffer has been working at the hotel for the past 57 years – truly a combination of loyalty and loving what you do..

The Peninsula Hong Kong is imbued with a luxury atmosphere where contemporary comfort and elegance meets the silence, sophistication and kindness of classic culture. It has a history attached to it and such a unique property to stay at in Hong Kong has some claim to make you feel you are at a noble hotel. From the building opened in the1920s, its colonial rococo resembles a Palace while the legend of the famous Afternoon Tea creates a 1-2 hour queue daily on their magnificent lobby just to secure a table. After we tried it, we could understand why it is a must-try for anyone in Hong Kong. The Rolls-Royce fleet adds to the hotel’s attractiveness. The Peninsula is the most anticipated loation at which stay as everything there reflects a philosophy and a very special art of living. Suffice it say, we had a super time at the Peninsula Hong Kong. The experience far exceeded our expectations. The room, service and the food were all spectacular. We have to admit that staying there is one of the best experiences we have ever had. The Peninsula really does have the right combination of everything that you need for a home away from home. It would be a pleasure to repeat the experience in the very near future. Samui. It was picture-perfect. The Chill Lounge and Beach & Pool Deck at Hansar Samui offers a carefully hand-picked international wine list and innovative cocktail menu to accompany you from morning to sunset. I also had a chance to experience LUXSA signature treatment at LUXSA Spa. The 90-minute treatment was delivered by a skilled therapist, the massage gentle but powerful at the same time, the pressure and strokes applied right on my sore and fatigued muscles. It was said that the massage stimulates the metabolism and balances the nervous system, which promotes a sense of well-being. I really feel refreshed after the treatment; this is a must-try if you wish to sample true Samui hospitality. The moment I entered the LUXSA Spa, I could feel its serene and peaceful atmosphere: I loved how they use warm colours for the interiors and organic treatment material as decoration. Adventures for two Despite the island’s small size , there is much to see and do in Samui for you and your loved one. Hin Ta / Hin Ya Rocks Also known as grandfather and grandmother rocks, this is located near Lamai beach. The main attraction is a rock that looks like a male’s private parts and another that resembles a female’s. The legend says that an elderly couple went out sailing to a nearby province but during their voyage their boat was

taken by a storm, while the grandfather and his wife were unable to swim ashore. They died at sea, turning into rocks to be remembered forever. The rocks are located close to a rock formation with a small beach and also a pub on the side. There are also lots of snacks and souvenir sellers at the venue. If you are not interested in the story, it still worth visiting for the view: truly beautiful. Waterfalls There are several waterfalls in Samui. As I travelled to Na Muang 1 waterfall, our driver said that this was closest to the car park, only about 5 minutes’ walk away. The others were a good 30 minutes to an hour’s walk away. The water falls from a cliff that is 30 -40 metres high, and about 20 metres wide. When I was there, I saw some couples swimming in the big water basin. The locals said that many couples go there to swim because of the natural romantic ambiance, but you need to be careful of the underwater rocks as they can be hazardous. Elephant Ride Another famous tourist attraction on this island is an Elephant Ride or Elephant Trekking. You can ride inside the jungle near the Na Muang waterfall. The ride is about 30 minutes. After the trek you may see an elephant show and feed the monkeys. It is quite an interesting experience to try, but do not forget to bring drinking water since Samui can get very hot during the day.

Chaweng Beach Chaweng is a must-see place when you are in Samui; it is a tourist area with many restaurants, cafes, bar and pub, and is larger than the fisherman’s village. You can find almost everything here, from souvenir shops, daily groceries to entertainment such as Thai kickboxing and cabaret shows. Chaweng Beach is also a happening place during the day and night; the sand is white and quite clean. Samui is a large island, where a mixture of local artistic culture can be found. It is perfect for couples that wish to enjoy a private getaway or just a romantic escape to rekindle their love life. And Hansar Samui is one of the most suitable places for your unforgettable amour-trip: Enjoy the quiet beach located adjacent to the resort, or experience local dining and a bar in the fisherman’s village just a few minutes’ walk from the resort. The service is superb and you may ask for an itinerary for two; the staff will happily arrange one. My stay at Hansar Samui was unforgettable and everything was so perfect. t was mid-June when I arrived at the beautiful island of Samui. To get here I first had to take a flight to Bangkok first then another to Samui for about an hour. It was quite a contrast going from large and modern Suvarnabhumi Airport to a small, resort-like airport in Samui, but it was also joyful to experience a tropical vibe upon arrrival. The sky was light blue, the sun shone quite brightly and I felt a gentle wind brush my hair: I was almost sure I smelt the seawater but I guess it was just my imagination. Koh Samui (koh means island) or simply Samui as locals say, is Thailand’s secondlargest island after Phuket and is located on the southern side of Thailand. It took about 15 minutes from the airport to the hotel where I would spend the next two nights at this sunny, romantic place. Always Kiss Me Good Night Hansar Hotels and Resorts has always been and will always be, one of my favourite luxury boutique hotel brands in Thailand. After staying several times at Hansar Bangkok, this was my first experience at Hansar Samui. Upon arrival, I was greeted by friendly faces and was offered fresh coconut in its shell as a welcome drink. That was no surprise, as coconuts are one of the best-selling exports in Samui besides tourism, for sure. The moment I entered the resort lobby, I felt a very welcoming atmosphere

and casual ambience; it was a semi-openair lobby with a high wooden ceiling and small water fountain in the centre. I guess it symbolized the tropical island which consists mainly of trees, beaches and sea. Check-in was over in no time and I was immediately escorted to my room on the second floor. The room was spacious with a comfortable double bed, flat-screen TV, iPod dock, mini-bar and luxurious inroom facilities. What I loved the most was the wide private balcony with large daybed couch, small tea table and lazy wooden chair. For me, the scenery was really inviting me to jump on the couch and cuddle with my partner all day while watching the view of calm waves coming in from the sea. Another special thing about the room is the rain-shower area; it was located beside the bed and separated by a thin glass partition and a series of dangling strings , forming a kind of curtain-like shape, which obviously does not screen everything between shower and bedroom, but surely imbued a sexy touch to this romantic room. The chocolate delivered to my room every evening was a very thoughtful extra touch. According to the staff, the name “Hansar” is taken from ancient Sanskrit, and means happiness and joy. In my experience, this name represented well the resort atmosphere during my stay here. All the staff were friendly and had a ready-to-

help demeanour whenever I met them. I remember asking for directions to a pickup point, somewhere in the fisherman’s village located just next to the hotel. The staff explained to me clearly and patiently where to go until I truly understood. The village is a small touristy area near Hansar Samui packed with small restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. Only 5 minutes’ walk from the hotel, you could basically got anything you might need here; it was really convenient. Even though there were so many restaurants and cafes in the area, none could beat the resort’s own eateries in my opinion. H-Bistro at Hansar Samui offered a wide range of food from its fresh French-Mediterranean menu and exclusive wine, to authentic Thailand traditional cuisine, reasonably priced, and was highly recommended. Try the Gai Hor Bai Toey, crispy chicken wrapped in pandan leaf or Zee Chlong MooMoo Thod Kratiem, stir-fried pork ribs served with garlic and pepper. And for the French cuisine, try grilled lobster with garlic butter and rocket salad; or Baraolo red wine sous-vide cooked Dutch veal cheeks. They tasted amazing thanks to Executive Chef Stephen Dion. The main attention of this beautiful property is the resort’s infinity-edge saltwater pool located next to the beach. A series of sun loungers on the poolside were a perfect way to lazy up your day while looking at the turquoise sea of

the services and amenities they provide are mostly complimentary, and I feel relieved as I do not have to be burdened by small fees or overcharging during my stay. Food so Tender Another pleasant experience during my stay was the romantic dinner for two at Eve Restaurant. Eve by Hansar, is a fine-dining restaurant serving seasonal and exquisite French Mediterranean cuisine. Thanks to the Executive Chef Charles Christiaens, all the food here was superb. I had a memorable four-course degustation menu, which was truly exceptional. As a starter, I had Hokaido Scallops with sea urchin panna cotta; the scallops were very fresh and the vegetable aioli used as a dipping sauce tasted delicious. This was followed by Spanish Octopus with heirloom tomato tartar, cauliflower, squid ink and eggplant caviar.

I also had a tasty fig sorbet before having the main course. I chose juicy beef tenderloin wagyu with black truffle sauce, which tasted extremely good. For dessert I had an amazing cherry sorbet complimented with strawberry, raspberry sauce, souffle and black Belgian chocolate. Everything here at Eve Restaurant is designed for perfection, from the luxurious interior design, mouthwatering menu selection to romantic atmosphere, which will surely boost your romantic journey. Rekindle the spark with your loved one at one of the best places to stay in town, where excellence and romance meet beauty in one of the most prestigious and strategic areas in Bangkok. dashing green wall greets me from the top of the Hansar Bangkok building, as I walk along one of the prestigious streets in Bangkok, in Ratchadamri. Being my second visit here, a return to Hansar Bangkok always feels like being at home. Friendly faces greet me as I walk through the high ceilinged lobby, passing by the beautiful huge painting on the wall to the second floor via wooden stairs, to complete check-in. There is a slight feel of romance, luxury and an intimate atmosphere in every corner of this beautiful property. From the

grand piano on the ground floor, pretty flowers on outside Eve restaurant, an inviting infinity-edge pool on the eighth floor, to the decor of all the suites ready to pamper you and your loved ones. Where Your Story Begins I stay at the lavishly designed Urban Suite room, where a gorgeous garden wall fully covered with interesting tropical greenery greets me as I walk through the entrance. The suite has two different living areas, a fully equipped workspace and a bedroom with comfortable king bed, separated by mirrored sliding door.

The spacious bathroom is also separated from the bedroom by a mirrored sliding door, outfitted with luxurious amenities and beautiful interior design, from a comfortable rain shower, his and hers washbasin, to a lovely bathtub. Warm, natural sunlight bathes the room through a wall-to-ceiling window around the room, overlooking the magnificent skycrapers of Bangkok. I love lazing on the large couch in one of the living room, as I enjoying the complimentary chocolate, wi-fi connection and mini-bar. This is one thing I love most about Hansar Bangkok:

ociety has long dictated that men are supposed to be fearless, courageous and strong. Weakness is not to be tolerated. Solicitation for compassion is frowned upon. Men are boring! Their feelings don’t matter. The bride’s story, on the other hand, is sweet. Delicate. Innocent. In almost every wedding, the bride is the centre of attention, standing tall and proud, surrounded by people desperate to help her. And the groom? More often than not he is sitting on the sidelines as his future wife grabs the reins and plans the wedding she has been dreaming about since she was a little girl. To be fair, most men are more than happy to stay clear as the women go all bridezilla. Most men think it is good fortune that we are not given any important wedding responsibilities. But what many people don’t realize is that detached demeanour often masks a groom’s fears about the coming nuptials. Call it our own PWSD (Pre-Wedding Stress Disorder). That’s what happened to my then-fiancée and me. On top of endless meetings with our wedding organizer and seemingly millions of decisions to make on the fly, my fiancée and I were constantly bickering about who was doing, or not doing, what. She accused me of not contributing enough to the wedding preparations, while I accused her of being flippant in all of her decisions! I remember that period as not very pleasant. In hindsight, it was our first taste of life as husband and wife, and what it takes to work together as a couple towards a major goal, overcoming emotions, fears and personal challenges. Communication Is Vital After my own experience, I can tell you that communication is absolutely vital in this sensitive, high-tension period. I wish I had told my fiancée how overwhelmed I felt by the whole wedding; what a complex and head-spinning affair getting married really was. There was endless paperwork, getting letters of approval from the local leaders and equally complex church procedures.

I was overwhelmed. Because we did not draw up a clear communication and action plan, my fiancée and I were moving erratically. Unorganized. We reacted instead of anticipated. On the other hand, I wish my fiancée had communicated to me how she felt that I wasn’t doing enough to help her and how stressed she was with everything. If you and your fiancée find yourself bickering a lot as the wedding approaches, sit down together and write down on a piece of paper your feelings, expectations and challenges. Ignoring things can have dire consequences. Octo Paul, beverage manager at the newly opened Altitude The Plaza in Jakarta, can attest to this.

After my own experience, I can tell you that communication is absolutely vital in this sensitive, high-tension period. I wish I had told my fiancée how overwhelmed I felt by the whole wedding; what a complex and headspinning affair getting married really was. “My fiancée and I were fighting a lot, like really a lot, a month or two prior to our wedding in Bali,” he said. “We’d bicker and argue over trivial things and this happened every time we met to discuss the wedding. I realized something was wrong, but I was too distracted by my job and getting over the wedding that I kept going on autopilot. “We never bothered to sit down and talk about it. Why are we fighting so much? And then, on our wedding day, the whole thing exploded. I mean exploded. There we were, in Bali, all made up and ready to walk up to the altar, and we were screaming at the top of our lungs at each other. I remember it was because of a

stupid argument! Regardless, in a fit, my fiancée declared that it was all over and that we were not getting married and ran away from the venue. I was shocked! Luckily, our families were able to intervene, calmed us down and after a brief delay we were finally married and remain happily married to this day.” International Language of Love Those who find love with someone of a different nationality face even bigger administrative headaches and a different set of challenges. Lucky Agustino, the corporate chef of the successful Indonesian restaurant group Gading Food, was in internal anguish for weeks thinking about the future with his Malaysian fiancée. “About a month before the wedding, I became really anxious. My mind was racing non-stop. Where are we going to settle down, Indonesia or Malaysia? What about her parents? And I don’t even have parents anymore. What if we decide to have children? Which nationality should they follow?” Lucky recalled of his dark days. “In addition, at that time she was working in Singapore, while I had to stay in Jakarta. It made our coordination considerably more difficult. It was a really busy time for me at work, too,” he continued, “so all of this piled on me for days, and then weeks. Then, the night before the wedding, her brother and I went out for a quasi-bachelor party, and I took it all out that night, drinking heavily until early morning. I got completely hammered. I would not have made it to the wedding the next morning had it not been for her brother. And I had the worst hangover ever. That was a really dumb move.” Watch That Drink Those who find love with someone of a different nationality face even bigger administrative headaches and a different set of challenges. That was a really dumb move.” There Is No Such Thing as ‘I’m Ready’ Let’s get that out of the way. You will never be ready for anything as life-changing as this. No amount of preparation can ever ready you for that exact moment you step up to the altar and declare your intention to take this woman as your lawfully wedded wife, until death do you part. It is a big deal. Indra Maulana, an activation specialist at Celsius Creative Communications, said, “A month before I got married, I couldn’t sleep. I was so high strung. I would lie on my bed, tossing and turning, drenched in sweat. It hit me all

Quote: “On the last night before the wedding day, I decided to go out drinking with my groomsmen to relieve the pressure. But we went overboard and got totally drunk! In the morning, as expected, we rushed like crazy to get to the wedding. Two hours before start time, we realized that one of our friends, who was the ring bearer and who had the wedding ring, had been left behind at the hotel! He was still asleep in one of the rooms when someone went to fetch him.”

Quote: “There we were, in Bali, all made up and ready to walk up to the altar, and we were screaming at the top of our lungs at each other. I remember it was because of a stupid argument! at once that I’m going to have my own family. My own family! I’m going to have to step up to the plate. No matter what happens in the future. In short, I was just not sure if I had made the right choice. “This actually continued to right before the Ijab Kabul (traditional ceremony of giving away the bride), but miraculously, right after her parents gave me their blessing, everything suddenly cleared up inside of me and I was, for the first time ever, finally sure of what I was doing.” He said that it took him a while to understand that he had just been overwhelmed by emotion. “Then I realized that there is never really the right time for anything. efore saying “I do”, there are some hard questions about marriage that couples need to ask. The ultimate success of a marriage could depend on a couple’s sitting down together and talking about what’s on the checklist of life before the wedding bell starts to toll. Here are your important pre-wedding topics for discussion: Career Since it’s a common belief that the husband is the main breadwinner in the family, the woman might ask whether she’s expected to become a full-time housewife or if she can still have a career. Usually, husbands will let their wives work, but of course with the prerequisite that they not neglect the children. A husband should support his wife’s dreams, whether it involves a job or education. It’s also important that couples share similar educational backgrounds so that they can effectively communicate. Children Many people assume that marriage comes with children, but quite a few people have no desire to become a parent. Ask your partner about their feelings towards having children. And when it comes to kids, it’s more than do you want them or not. You need to ask how many kids you each want and when in your life will you have them. And, in the worst-case scenario, you might ask, ‘If I had an illness that prevented me from having children, would you still marry me?” In-laws Dealing with in-laws can be difficult. One or more family members might create problems and stress in your marriage because of their own false expectations, like disagreements over how grandchildren should be raised or

disciplined or a mother-in-law’s being overly involved in how to cook and clean the house. Nevertheless, it’s much better if you have a good relationship with your spouse’s family, especially if they are tight-knit. Couples need to ask each other what they would do if there was a conflict with the extended family. Does your partner stand up for you or does he/she become passive? Whenever conflict happens within an extended family, couples should realize that the very first priority is their spouse and their children. Sex Women especially have a difficult time discussing sex, foreplay, preferred sexual positions, etc., but the importance of discussing these things with your soonto-be spouse cannot be overemphasised. Expecting your husband or wife to somehow read your mind and “just know” what you want or need sexually doesn’t work and often leads to disappointment in the marriage. Ask what your partner’s point of view on sex is. Can you comfortably and openly discuss your sexual needs, preferences and fears? And if there’s a problem, would you willing to see a therapist? Money Don’t wait until you are standing at the altar to tell each other how much money you do or don’t have. Find out your partner’s financial goals and discuss your plans for saving money. Decide whether you will have a joint bank account or keep your accounts separate. Work out who will be the primary bookkeeper in the marriage. Be sure that you don’t make all the financial decisions without the knowledge and agreement of your spouse. Ask each other question like, ‘If I’m responsible

for my parents by regularly giving them money, would you mind? Do you do the same thing, too?’ And, to make sure your partner’s ready for the whole richer or poorer part of marriage, you might want to ask, ‘If there’s a financial crisis and I go bankrupt, what would you do?’ Faith Discuss what religion you will embrace as a family. Other things can be worked out, but for most people, religion is a primary concern because it will affect how you raise your children. Even if couples are not currently active with any religion, once children come along, one or both spouses might suddenly feel strongly about raising the children within a particular religion. So, talk about the role that religion will play in your family. Future You’re going to spend a life together, so it’s important to picture your future with your partner. Ask questions like, what are your expectations for the next 10 years or 20 years? Are we going to send the kids to local schools or to study abroad? What kind of house do you dream of? When Getting married should be an exciting time in your life. No matter what you do, there will be ups and downs because there is no such thing as a perfect marriage. It’s how you both deal with the good times and the bad that will define you as a couple. After discussing the above topics with your partner, Vania says the last question is for yourself: Am I a better person with this man or woman that I’m going to marry? The answer to that will go a long way towards determining just how ready you are to take the plunge into marriage.

LOVE, SEX & COMMITMENT

Big Questions Before the Wedding Bell Tolls A successful marriage is not built on surprises. When a couple starts thinking about saying their “I dos, they are often starry-eyed about the realities of spending a life together. They assume they are on the same page as their spouse-to-be, failing to grasp that marriage can be difficult, especially when they discover that they have very different expectations.
