Promise of a Lifetime My love, here I stand before you I am yours now from this moment on Take my hand, only you can stop me shaking We’ll share forever, this I promise you And when I look in your eyes All of my life feels before me And I’m not running anymore ’Cause I already know I’m home With every beat of my heart I give you my love completely My darling, this I promise you (“This I Promise You” by Ronan Keating)

s editor in chief of a wedding magazine, and I’m not proud to say this, but I recently realized that I don’t have a clear vision of my dream wedding. Learning from the experiences of the people around me preparing for their weddings, one thing I do know is that I want the wedding preparations stress-free as possible. Preparing for a wedding should be fun and exciting, if it can be overwhelming and a little stressful at the same time. If you are reading this then it is likely that you are preparing for your wedding, so let the fun begin. It is said that every girl has her own vision of a dream wedding and that is certainly true of my good friend. She fell in love in a beautiful chapel overlooking the Indian

Ocean. It was love at first sight and she told me that was where she was going to get married. She didn’t even have a boyfriend. A few years later and now she is planning her wedding, and I assumed she had already booked that chapel. But she said there was a dilemma. She said she loved everything about the chapel, but it was under a different brand now and she wasn’t sure that it was the right venue for her. Don’t laugh, because brand plays a very important part when it comes to choosing a wedding venue. It could be prestige, the standard of service associated with the brand, the quality of a brand’s products, anything. Our “Wedding Brand” section is filled with information on different brands that are famous for wedding venues, and we compare what it is like to have your

wedding in different cities and countries under the same brand. From the moment you hear those four magic words, “Will you marry me?” one of your top priorities will be finding just the right dress for the big day. To give you a head start, we look at the best dresses for a “Walk (Down the Aisle) to Remember.” And “Super Dapper Groom” is a to-do grooming guide before you say “I do.” Weddings are all about dreams and here at MAXX-Brides we help you turn your dreams into reality. As a flower blossoms with hope anew, I wish you the same for your married life — a fresh start to eternal bliss, side by side with the one you love.

Playful • You are brave enough to be playful, so play with details, structure and materials. Use lots of ruffles, beads and sequin. Try an asymmetrical or unstructured cut, or make the bold decision to wear a nonwhite wedding dress. Be a sexy bride, an edgy bride or any kind of bride you want. You are confident enough to be anything. • If you wear a playful dress, you may want less makeup and fewer accessories. But if you want big accessories and bold makeup and hair, find a low-profile dress that is still enough for your playful soul.

Feminine • Lace is perfect if you are romantic, graceful and elegant. • Bows and flowers bring out your feminine side. • Lace and pearl headpieces and accessories will define your look.

Androgyny • A perfect suit-dress or bustier-pants combination creates a sexy androgynous look. • Sleek hair with few accessories, black shoes and red lips will close the deal. • Play around with details such as a bow tie orvest.

Super Dapper Groom-to-Be A to-do grooming guide before you say ‘I do’

U

nless your wedding theme is Beauty and the Beast, it’s important that both the bride and groom look and feel their best on the big day! Trust us! Making a grooming investment now will pay off big on your wedding day. What should you do? Well, you can start with simple things such as clean and trimmed fingernails, a great scent, a clean-shaven face (think Shia LaBeouf in “Wall Street”), add a stylish haircut and some face and body treatments. Here’s your grooming to-do list:

Daily

1. Start with cleansing Make sure you wash your hands first with an antibacterial soap. You can’t clean your face with dirty hands. The next step is to wash your face at least twice a day. Use a soap-free, moisturising and gentle cleansing product (gel or foam) to get rid of the grime of your day. For best results wet your face with warm water before opening up your pores for a deep cleansing. Products: •O lay Men Refreshing Energy Oil Control Cleanser (for normal to oily skin) •O lay Men Smooth Cream Foaming Cleanser (for dry to normal skin)

4. Brush teeth, floss, rinse with mouthwash Spend three minutes every morning and night brushing your teeth. Floss at least once a day and fight bad breath by gargling with mouthwash after brushing and doing a tongue cleaning. Make sure you deliver a perfect first kiss after you’ve been pronounced husband and wife. 2. Take care of your hair Back in 2011, ‘Prince William’s Bald Spot Shines at Royal Wedding’ was one of the biggest headlines around the world. Yes, hair loss is an alarming and worrying phenomenon, and in men the cause is often genetic. The good news is that the earlier it is treated, the better your chances of keeping your hair. A daily care product such as revitalizing shampoo can address thinning hair. You can also use a daily fortifying spray to slow hair loss and promote growth. Spray onto the scalp section by section, on dry or damp hair, and gently massage in to distribute the product. Products: • Phyto Phytolium Energizing Shampoo • Phyto Phytostim Fortifying Spray 3. Shower regularly News flash: Body odour is a big turn off for women. Shower at least once a day, and don’t use hot water because it isn’t doing your skin any favours. Showers and baths should be kept to 10 minutes or less to prevent the skin losing its natural oils and drying out. To protect against dry skin don’t forget to moisturise. If body lotion isn’t your thing, use an in-shower body moisturiser. Slather on, then rinse off. It leaves behind a coating of moisturiser that doesn’t feel sticky and softens dry areas very well. You’ll love it! Products: • Molton Brown Water Mint Body Wash • Nivea In-Shower Body Moisturiser

Products: • Philips Sonicare toothbrush • Colgate® Total® Advanced Toothpaste • Oral-B Essential Floss Cavity Defense • Listerine Cool Mint Mouthwash

avoid foam) and when you finish, apply a moisturising and soothing aftershave to make your skin soft and fresh again. Products: • Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Sky Flyin’ Foaming Multi-Gel • The Body Shop for Men Maca Root Shave Cream • Gillette Mach3 Turbo • Lab Series for Men PRO LS All-in-One Face Treatment

5. Shave regularly Shave every morning after a warm shower. Not only is it best to shave after taking a shower, it’s also good to splash your face a few times with warm water before shaving. This stimulates your skin, opens up your pores, softens the hairs and makes it easier for the razor to make contact. It can also help prevent acne breakouts and razor burn. Apply a pre-shave oil or gel to add a protective layer against the sharpness of the razor blade. After that, apply shaving product (cream, gel, oil –

6. Take care of your eyes Apply moisturiser and eye care products on clean and dry skin in the morning and night (choose a night moisturiser). Make sure you use a moisturiser with lightweight formula that goes on smooth and is easily absorbed, delivering continuous hydration all day long and with a hint of SPF to protect from ageing. One of the first places where signs of ageing appear is the area of thin,

delicate skin around the eyes. Blame it on the late evenings hard at work, lack of sleep, stress, etc. Use eye care products to help reduce the appearance of dark circles, puffiness and fine lines. Products: • L’Occitane Verdon Outdoor Moisturizer SPF30 • L’Occitane Verdon Instant Energy Eye Gel Roll-On 7. Smell great all day The best time to apply deodorant or antiperspirant is right after showering. For deodorant to be effective, apply it when you’re completely dry. Morning or night, it works the same. As for fragrance, apply just a couple of dabs or sprays to areas like your neck or the insides of your wrists. It will last longer on clean, moist skin. Products: Clarins Men Antiperspirant Deo Stick Aramis Gentleman

Weekly

1. Scrub your body and face and apply facial mask Once or twice a week, use a body scrub when you’re in the shower, after a workout or in the morning. The scrubbing particles will smooth your skin and remove dead cells. The same goes for a face scrub that can be used the same way as a face cleanser. It is recommended to scrub your skin before the application of a facial mask. Different types of masks give different benefits such as moisturizing, anti-ageing or peel-off (scrub effect). Products: • H2O Plus Spa Sea Moss Black Sand Body Scrub • Shiseido Men Deep Cleansing Scrub • Murad Clarifying Mask 2. Keep your nails trimmed Get a nail clipper (please don’t chew your nails) and cut both your fingernails and toenails once a week before you take a shower. Don’t trim your nails excessively because it can lead to ingrown nails. Cut straight across the nail and leave them a little long. If you’ve got dirt under your nails, scrape it out with a nail file.

Monthly

Keep your hair trimmed Most men need a haircut every three to four weeks. A month before your wedding day, make sure your barber knows how to cut your hair so it grows out evenly and looks great for the entire

month between cuts. If you want to try out a new hairstyle, do it a few months before the wedding, just in case it doesn’t turn out as planned.

2. Whitening your teeth. Wedding photos last forever, so you definitely want to show off your brightest smile. In-office teeth whitening promises excellent results. This procedure is performed in the dental office, can be done very quickly (a little over an hour) and gives immediate results. A common side effect of teeth whitening though is sensitive teeth, so you may want to do it a few months before the event so you aren’t wincing through the big day.

1. Splurge on a spa day Spa packages for groom-to-be usually come with massages, facials, manicures or pedicures. You can indulge in all these treatments once a month leading up to the big day. But before you have a facial treatment, get some expert advice about the best options for your skin type. Stop all facial treatments two months before the wedding to avoid the allergic reactions a facial can inflict. As for pre-wedding massages, stop one week before the big day. Permanent hair removal Forget the painful waxing experience a la “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” There is an advanced technology for removing “unwanted hair” quickly, safely and pain-free called ZAP treatment. It takes five to eight treatments for maximum result and the treatment needs to be repeated after four to six weeks. The most common areas to be treated are the back, shoulders and chest. Available at ZAP Outlets (Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya).

Look Your Best Who wants a thick mask of makeup on her wedding day? A foundation of varying tones? Nobody wants that. You want to look your best on your big day. You can achieve that with beauty products, vitamins, injections and surgery

She offers inside tips on treatments that are safer, faster, more convenient and more practical than surgery. For a slimmer face Botox is much safer and faster than surgery, involving injections straight into your problem areas. Sometimes it’s not excess fat that makes your face look bigger, but the big muscles around the jaw that give an impression of fullness. Botox can reduce these muscles, and you can continue the treatment until you get the result you want. It’s more practical than surgery and cutting your jaw for a thinner face.

Facials can leave your skin red and splotchy, but a peel is much safer and won’t leave your face all red. This treatment will leave your skin looking fresh even after a stressful day, and will give you small pores so your makeup is smoother and your skin brighter. Beauty Tips Every Bride Should Know To look your best on your wedding day, follow these beauty tips

N

ow that you are engaged it is time to step up your daily beauty routine so you can be the stunning bride you have always dreamt of. Here are some beauty tips for looking your best before, during and after your wedding day. Schedule Weekly Manicures As soon as you get engaged, everyone will ask to see the ring. Keep those nails and hands primed and pretty with weekly manicures. This is your chance to experiment with colours (pretty mauves and pinks) and get to know your manicurist. When you get your nails done, look at your nail bed. Shape your nails to match, giving your hands and nails a balanced and elegant look.

Let the Professional Do Your Brows A professional eyebrow shaping makes such a difference! As far as brows go, thin is out, big is in. Think of Keira Knightley’s or Sienna Miller’s natural full brows. Once your brow line is perfect, you’re not going to want to tamper with it. So, make regular maintenance appointments – at least monthly – in the lead-up to the big day to ensure your brows stay tidy. If you must DIY in between appointments, invest in a highpowered magnifying mirror that will enable you to see hair as it’s breaking the skin. Don’t Follow the Trend Makeup expert Bobbi Brown says,“My biggest tip for wedding day beauty is to stay

away from anything trendy, because trends come and go.” She makes an excellent point – you want to choose a look that will look fresh and classic 20 years from now. Trends change and something that is considered hot today will be out of fashion tomorrow. The same thing happens with makeup trends. You want to look at your wedding photos years from now and have the makeup still looking timeless. Be the Real You Your bridal makeup should enhance your features so you look like yourself –at your most radiant and beautiful. Every bride should use their classic beauty routine as inspiration and then take that up one notch. It is important to look like yourself on your special day and in the album pictures that will last forever. Experiment with different makeup and hairstyles, but then choose the one you are most comfortable with, the one that is most you. You don’t want to look back at photos of the special day and wonder “who is that?” The Ultimate Power Layer your makeup for ultimate wearing power. Alternate lipstick with pressed powder and keep face makeup in place with makeup primers, line fillers and setting powder –these all help to ensure your makeup lasts for as long as you want it to. Do Not Overdo the Makeup There is no doubt that her wedding day is when the bride gets to look like

a princess, with a stunning white dress, luxurious jewellery, high-heels, a fancy hairstyle and professional makeup. Unfortunately, some brides-to-be think the wedding is the day to wear a lot of makeup, which is a total mistake. You want to look pretty, not like a clown. Too much of anything is never a good thing. Dirty Is Sometimes Good Dirty hair is the secret to a long-wearing updo. If you have super fine hair that doesn’t like to stay in an updo, don’t wash your hair for a few days before the wedding so it will be slightly greasy. This will give your hair some grip and help it stay in place all night. Don’t Touch Your Face Once the wedding makeup is on, avoid touching it during the wedding day. All you need are blotting papers and powder for preventing a shiny face, and a tube of lipstick to freshen up your lips after all those kisses. Relax, Indulge Make sure to indulge yourself with a relaxing and pampering routine as the big day approaches. From a simple massage to a long warm bath and, most important of all, plenty of sleep, taking care of yourself will help you look your most beautiful during your wedding. Remember, relax and enjoy yourself; this is a once in a lifetime event.

EVERLASTING LOVE

Your love should stand the test of time. So should your wedding makeup and hairdo Text by Dewi Rokhmawati | Photos by …

I

t’s your wedding day and you’re still obsessing over the details. Is there enough food for the guests? Will the wedding officiant arrive on time? And the list goes on and on. So the last thing you need is to worry about your makeup going bad or walking down the aisle with a Diana Ross-style Afro because you can’t keep your wedding do under control. Your fears are completely normal, but remember that this is supposed to be a happy day. “Relax, take a deep breath and focus only on yourself just for this one day,” advises Donny Karyadi, a professional makeup artist. Trust all of the details to a good wedding planner or to your friends and family. And as for the secret to longlasting wedding makeup and hair, Donny is happy to share his beauty secrets.

1 Choose the right makeup for your skin type. Generally, there are five skin types: dry, combination, oily, sensitive and acneprone. Different skin types require different product formulations. A skin aesthetician can evaluate your skin type and help you determine the best products for you. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your wedding makeup looking fresh all day.

Dry Skin: • Look for foundations that contain oil. Dry skin has a low level of sebum and has a parched, flaky look caused by its inability to retain moisture. Dry skin itches because it is irritated easily. What you need is a liquid or cream foundation that contains oil and goodfor-skin hydrating ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin B. Product: Estée Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup • Fake gleaming, gorgeous skin with shimmer or highlighter. Dewy skin should be reflective and

shimmery, not greasy and sweaty looking, so apply shimmer only on the highest part of your cheekbones to make them really stand out. Don’t spread the shimmer all over your face. Product: Benefit High Beam • Choose a moist, long-lasting lipstick. Your lips get dry easily, so avoid a matte lipstick because it will contribute to the dryness. Pick a lipstick with long-lasting hold and a creamy texture (usually made from natural waxes) that will make your lips look and feel smooth. Product: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense

Combination Skin: • Use different products on different parts of your face. Typically, combination skin is when parts of your face are dry or flaky, while your nose, chin and forehead (called the T-zone) is oily. “It’s complicated” would be the perfect way to describe your challenging complexion combo. Apply a hydrating primer/serum to the dry areas first then apply a matte finish foundation. Products: SK-II Cellumination Essence EX Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup SPF 10 • Even out your complexion. Using your fingers or a concealer brush, spot-apply a creamy concealer under your eyes, along the corners of your nose and over any blemishes. Product: Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer • Use powder eye shadow. Combination skin types should use powder eye shadow. The smooth, pigment-rich powder eye shadow will remain vibrant all day, yet blend with ease. In addition, the deeper tones can double as eyeliner when dampened. Product: MAC Eye Shadow

Acne-Prone Skin: • Covering imperfections without piling on too much makeup. Yes, pre-wedding stress can trigger or even aggravate your breakouts. Your mission is to mask blemishes without your makeup looking too heavy or cakey. The trick is to apply a light layer of matte foundation, letting it fully set before you apply the next layer, leaving you with a smooth, matte final finish. Product: The Body Shop Extra Virgin Minerals™ Compact Foundation • Use light strokes when applying makeup. Pressing on or stretching the skin can irritate it and cause breakouts.

“Relax, take a deep breath and focus only on yourself just for this one day.” Donny Karyadi, a professional makeup artist.

Oily Skin: • Go for water-based products. Since your skin already naturally produces more than enough oil, invest in makeup products that are waterbased. The shade of the foundation that you choose should be either a shade lighter or darker than your skin tone. Product: Lancôme Teint Idole Silky Mat Foundation • Remember that like mixes with like. Oil plus oil. Water plus water. If you use a water-based foundation and top it with an oil- based concealer, it won’t mix and your makeup won’t last long. • Avoid touching your face during the day! Oils from your hands get transferred from your palms or fingers without you even realizing!

072

Sensitive Skin: • Stick to products labelled “hypoallergenic” and “fragrance-free”. If your complexion reacts by stinging or turning red and angry whenever you apply most beauty products, you’ve got sensitive skin. The ingredients most likely to aggravate your skin are fragrances, preservatives, colours and formaldehyde. By picking your makeup products carefully, you’re less likely to put something on your skin that will inflame it.

• Use mineral makeup. Mineral makeup is free of irritating fragrances and dyes. Not only can it even out your complexion, mineral makeup actually makes your skin really glow. The trick is to apply it with a brush, so you won’t tug at your sensitive skin, and use a light hand to buff the foundation into the skin in a circular motion. Here comes the beaming bride! Product: bareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 • The right colours for eye makeup. Dark eye shadow usually has more pigments and is more likely to irritate eyes. Of course you don’t want to be the bride with swollen or red eyes. A safer option is light colour tones. Stick to black eye pencil and mascara because they are more appropriate for sensitive skin (less colourant).

Makeup and hairdo tips for an outdoor wedding “Simplicity is the key,” says Donny about the perfect makeup and hair for an outdoor wedding. Try keeping your skin more natural for outdoor weddings and prep skin with an oilabsorbing base. Donny prefers a neat updo or a sleek ponytail for an outdoor wedding. “When it comes to outdoor weddings, I know many women want to look natural and effortless. They tend to let their hair down. However, in windy conditions common with an outdoor setting, wearing your hair up will help control the hair better and keeping your hair more in place.” Don’t forget to add some product to your hair after you wash it. Mousse or gel will help your hair hold a curl and style. Products: - Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer - L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Full Volume Extra

2 Look for “waterproof” makeup. Except for sensitive skin, make sure to use waterproof, water-resistant or long-wear makeup to keep it in place. Whether the wedding is outside, inside, day or night, your makeup should withstand the long hours, humidity, harsh lighting and anything you’re you throw at it. 3 Stay away from facials and dermatological treatments a month before the big day. You never know how your skin may react, and the last thing you need right before your wedding day is a blotchy reaction from a treatment gone wrong! It’s hard to apply makeup on irritated skin and your makeup just won’t stay put. 4 Remove oil or product build-up from your hair. It’s hard to style greasy hair or hair that lacks volume, especially if it is finer hair. Trust me, nasty greasy hair is not the secret to a great hairdo. The idea is that your hair not be “dirty” but that the moisture and oil in your hair should be properly balanced so your hair will hold a style. So washing your hair is a must. Finer hair is best washed on the day of your wedding and thicker hair the day before.

Whether the wedding is outside, inside, day or night, your makeup should withstand the long hours, humidity, harsh lighting and anything you’re you throw at it.

The Proposal So, you’ve worked it out: you are going to marry her. Congratulations. Now comes arguably the most challenging part of the process: asking for her hand in marriage. How do you go about it? Is she even ready for it? What about her parents? What is the best way to pop the question? Fear not, brave men, Arvada Haradiran gives you the lowdown on proposals

Y

ou have looked long and deep into your soul and searched your feelings. Yes, this is the woman you want to wake up next to every morning for the next hundred years. But there’s a problem – she doesn’t know it yet. And you want to break it to her in a way that is memorable, precious and, of course, as romantic as possible. After all, this is a story she will be telling and retelling to friends and strangers, how you proposed to her under the stars and how the universe aligned oh-so-perfectly that day. Here are some tips for popping the question, based on my own experience, so you don’t make the same mistakes I did. Do Your Research This may sound obvious, but many men are so engrossed and tortured in their quest for the perfect proposal that they forgot to check with the one person who matters the most: the girlfriend. I saw this first-hand when my friend Yogi (not his real name), a youth minister, proposed to his long-time girlfriend in front of the whole congregation – only to be flatly rejected. That is, she was so shocked and totally caught by surprise when Yogi dropped to one knee and popped the big question, in front of the whole congregation no less, that she simply didn’t know how to react. She actually ran away without so much as saying a word.

Don’t worry, they’re together now. But the lesson still stands: Do your research. Is your girlfriend ready? Many women look forward to a proposal, but if you ambush them without so much as dropping a hint, don’t be surprised if they say “no” out of sheer shock. Also, research her parents. Are they traditional? If so, then maybe they’d like you to come to them first to ask their permission.

Do your research. Is your girlfriend ready? Many women look forward to a proposal, but if you ambush them without so much as dropping a hint, don’t be surprised if they say “no” out of sheer shock. Put a Ring on It Your first financial hit is the dowry or bride price for your fiancée. Oh yes, these still very much exist. Take a look at the engagement ring. You will buy an engagement ring, won’t you? WON’T YOU?? People tend to forget that engagement and wedding rings are basically the modern-day version of bride price or dowry. How do you feel about rings now? Engagement and wedding ring designers

have succeeded in branding rings as must-have items for every bride and groom. Because of this, people are willing to pay much more than the diamonds themselves are worth. My wife and I often discuss how we should have invested in gold bars instead of wedding rings that we rarely use these days (they scratch and hinder movement). So, my suggestion is this: Go talk to your girl. See if she really cares about the ring. Some women actually don’t, like my wife. If it doesn’t matter to her, invest in gold bars. Trust me, they come in much handier in a rainy day. I’m not being acerbic; to me the ring is just a symbol. What matters is the commitment that you keep in your heart. Romantic Affair After you’ve done all this, it’s time to spring the trap. This is the one stage where you should NOT involve her at all. You’ve got to surprise her somehow. Of all the antiquated betrothal practices, properly asking for her hand in a special way is, in my opinion, a relic from the past that is worth keeping. Totally. To me it means a lot more than any engagement ring or lavish party. This is the moment where you get to look deep into her eyes and ask if she will join you in this adventure of a lifetime, in bad times and good. The truth of her answer – whether it’s yes or no – is what makes everything worth it.

Mr and Mrs Vitte, a French couple based in Singapore, recently enjoyed their very own RE.UNION ceremony and said the experience had brought them closer

together as a couple and as a family. “One year ago, we were riding our bicycles along the beach and passed by the Infinity Chapel. This prompted us to confirm our decision to renew our vows there. We drew up a short invitation in the beach sand, took a picture and sent it to our friends,” said Mrs Vitte. “Walking to the chapel holding our kids’ hands, all our friends and family waiting for us inside all dressed in white, applauding; this was a very emotional moment. During dinner, our kids stood up and made a speech saying how proud they were and how much they loved us. “Our friends were very surprised since we were the first couple to do something like this. Some of them asked us why we were doing it, but ultimately found the idea very romantic. It was great to see so many of our loved ones there. It had almost been a year since we had last seen some of them, with guests coming from as far afield as Paris, Madrid and Singapore.” The significance of the occasion will be commemorated with a specially commissioned portrait painted by one

of Bali’s ‘on the spot’ school of master painters, as well as a surprise gift for the happy couple as a keepsake to remember the experience by. Conrad Bali’s RE.UNION experience is priced at US$3,500 + 21 percent tax and service charge and is inclusive of the following: • Two nights’ stay in a Conrad Suite for bride and groom • Vow renewal ceremony at Infinity Chapel with commemorative keepsakes • On-hand assistance and amenities prior, during and after the ceremony • Three-course dinner reception for 10 people (additional guest charges apply) • 90-minute Ocean Flow Signature Massage for couple in Spa Pavilion • Romantic dinner for the couple. Take a Vow and Make a ‘Wow’

From grand ballrooms to intimate outdoor venues, all your wedding dreams can come true at these gorgeous locations Text by Tinuk Samiadjie

Classic Wedding Venue: Grand Style here are plenty of choices when it comes to venues for your wedding ceremony and reception, but nothing says style quite like a classic ballroom.

T

A hotel ballroom or hall is the ideal venue for couples who want to make a big statement and are planning a wedding party for hundreds, or even thousands, of their friends and colleagues. And there is a distinct sense of pride when a couple hold their wedding in such a grand venue. Some things to consider if you want to throw a party in a ballroom/hall: 1. Determine how many guests you want to invite. 2. Sit down and talk about your wedding theme, then find the decorator who can bring your vision to life. 3. After you draw up your initial guest list, make sure your venue can accommodate that many people. And don’t forget about the parking. Destination Wedding (Bali) f you are planning a destination wedding, there are a few things you will want to consider when selecting your venue. Like real estate, a destination wedding is all about location, location, location. In particular, the bride and groom need to make sure they have the same vision for their wedding. If the bride is dreaming of a beach wedding and the groom has his heart set on a mountain venue, hurt feelings could ensue. Then you have to make sure the venue comfortable enough for guests who make the trip and whether there is enough nearby accommodation for the wedding party.

I

And before you decide on a destination wedding, remember that you will have a smaller event and fewer guests. If that is your dream wedding, plan away. A Perfect Outdoor Wedding Party hat is your vision of an outdoor wedding? Hopefully it’s not limited to gardens and the beach, because when it comes to creating outdoor weddings, the possibilities are endless. Think golf courses, cruises, museums or art galleries. If you can dream it, you can live it.

W

The caveat is that if you are planning your wedding party in a unique venue,

you may have to work a bit harder to get everything ready for the big day. You might have to think about electrical capacity, parking space, restrooms and how many tables and chairs are available. Couples also need to secure permission from the venue management for the decorations and guests. Remember, if a venue is not traditionally used for weddings, all those decorations

and guests can be a shock. Couples should be open about their plans with the venue from the beginning. Couple: Guillaume and Abigail at Sea Safari Cruises Couple: Job and Rika at Sector Bar/ Restaurant/Lounge/Event House, Bali Photos: www.ideseni.com Photographer: Gusti Dibal

lassic and elegant? That is the safe bet for wedding parties. What if you want something different, a wedding party that will wow guests and create memories to last a lifetime? Explore themes such as rustic, vintage or shabby chic. Try a whimsical wedding party with pastels and watercolour motifs or a peacock party with its dazzling array of colours. Capturing that special theme comes down to the details. Bring every corner of the venue alive and immerse guests in your wedding vision. Decorative details like garlands, pompoms and bunting can bring your party alive. A professional touch can elevate your wedding party to new heights, creating the kind of event people will talk about for year. A wedding party with a personal touch will be more memorable, for you and your guests.

The Sweetest Day

Magic! When everything at your wedding is too beautiful to be forgotten. If you want wedding magic, you need to bring in professionals who can create that special moment. Text & Stylist by Tinuk Samiadjie | Photos by Balapradana | Model: Alina (Fame Management) Decorations by Butterfly Event Styling | Dessert Corner by Chocolique’s Pralines, Cakes and Chocolate Fountain Location, Makeup, Party Dress, Wedding Gown, Hair Accessories & Jewellery by Divine Wedding & Photography

S

pecial moments are connected to delicious food and loved ones. This perfect combination creates wedding magic.

A cake stylist can create a magical dessert corner for your wedding reception, with a dream wedding cake and other sweet treats. Friends and family will gather around these sweet confections to toast your everlasting love. Fresh colours and sunlight will give the venue a dreamy modern look. A wedding organizer will help bring your wedding theme to life. Every detail, from the venue, wedding dress, makeup, invitation and wedding favours, must come together for that perfect moment in time. Planning the perfect wedding can be stressful for the couple. There is so much to do, and pay for, and so little time.

Invitation Card by Million Yellow Invitation

Try these simple tips for a magical and stress-free wedding 1. If you have the budget engage the services of an experienced wedding organizer. 2. Plan your wedding budget carefully. It helps to finalize the date and venue far ahead of time so you know just what you will need to make your dream wedding come true. 3. If you are paying for the wedding with credit card, make sure your card has a rewards program. 4. Create some fun activities for your wedding party, so guests

will not just “eat, shake hands, go home.” For example, guests can contribute a song or you can have an after-party following the reception. Or set up a special children’s area and a unique dessert corner. 5. Plan for the weather. You don’t want suffering through heat or cold, or getting caught in the rain. And include a dress code on the invitation, so guests will not show up dressed inappropriately.

Eternal Moments

Planning a thematic wedding party is a good way for couples to come together, explore their shared passions and create a party that will live on in their memories for a lifetime. A

successful theme wedding party is not just about the decorations, cake and invitations. The bride and groom are the most important elements of the party, so their wardrobe and look has to must match the chosen theme. The rest can follow. So if you are planning a 1920s themed party, the first thing you have to do is research the looks and lifestyle of that time so you can incorporate it in your party.

Invitation Card by Talenta Gallery

Printed by Paper & Ink

The 1920s saw the rise of modern art, design and architecture. Art Deco was introduced in 1925 in Paris. Writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald captured these heady times in celebrated novels. Couples inspired by the beauty of the 1920s can capture that vintage ambience, fashion and beauty. Use dark eye shadow, ivory coloured powder and classic red lipstick. Sexy! When you decide to have a themed wedding party, everything has to be planned down to the very last detail. Couples want the perfect wedding party that they can remember for years to come.

Invitation Card by Million Yellow Invitation

(Baby) steps to make a themed wedding party 1. Couples need to make sure they have the same vision for their dream wedding. 2. Couples can talk about their hobbies and activities. Who knows, they might find something in common. 3. Thematic weddings can be cheesy. But if you plan it right a themed wedding can be magnificent and show off the couple’s personality.

4. A themed party does not always have to be international in style. Couples can hold a 1960s style wedding party with vintage Indonesian toys. 5. Do your research. You need to get all the details right, from the decorations, invitations and the clothes of the couples. And don’t forget to set a dress code for the guests. 6. Most importantly, stay within your budget!

always liked the Coco Chanel quote “When accessorizing, take off the last thing you put on” and its message of less is more. Except when it comes to decorating the table. That is an area where you can let your imagination run wild. Go beyond the

usual set-up of flowers and candles. If you are into fashion, try a clutch made of cactus or a big bag with pine leaves combined with pearls and wild flowers. Sometimes, all you need is an idea that will speak on your behalf.

he passion for the stylish, elegant, sophisticated and timeless world of chinoiserie, a French term for a style of art and decoration that reflects Chinese influences, inspired me to create a table setting with vintage blue and white chinoiserie fabrics, flowers and a pair of bronze Chinese lions. The lions always appear in pairs, a manifestation of the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, the female representing yin and the male yang. Statues of guardian lions have traditionally stood in front of Chinese imperial palaces and were believed to have mythic protective powers.

From This Moment On It was love at first sight for Handy Tjahyadi when he met Karen Karly two years ago, and on 6 October 2013, at Tirtha Luhur, Uluwatu – Bali, the couple said their “I Dos” Wedding Organiser: Project Art Plus Wedding & More | Decorator/Florist: Steve’s Decor Photos by: Gusde Photography | Videography by Bali Metro Invitations by New Fanda Print | Souvenirs by Joel Art & Souvenir

aren loves Handy because “he is different, unique, smart, a workaholic, straightforward, and he really makes an effort to make our relationship work.” Handy says he fell head over heels for Karen because “she is pretty, straightforward, makes me a better person, is funny, charming, modest and light-hearted.” The bride, who planed the wedding, chose a concept of romantic and glamorous fine dining. There were lots of candles and white flowers to add to the feeling of romance, and mirror tabletops, crystal chandeliers and scattered crystals for a glamorous touch. The wedding invitation was a jewellery box and the souvenirs were specially designed crystal bottles filled with aromatherapy oils, the perfect

match for the concept of romance and glamour. About 115 close relatives and friends of the couple were present on 6 October 2013 when the couple exchanged their wedding vows. “Handy made a speech to his parents and to me. It came from the heart. It was very touching and half of the guests were crying during the speech,” Karen said of the most special moment of their wedding day. “He also surprised me before the wedding dance. While the pre-wedding video was playing, he said he had a stomach ache and needed to go to the restroom. Then he came out singing a romantic song for me. I was shocked. Happy but shocked. I never knew he could do something like that,” the bride added.

She has brought me joy, laughter and happiness since then. Preparing a once-in-a-lifetime wedding is never easy, but with her every bit was worth it. It has made me realize that she is indeed the one and only love of my life.” After two years as a couple, Rocky and Merlin decided to marry. They spent a year planning the wedding party and everything was perfect. The decorations were gorgeous, the food was delicious, and the bridesmaids and groomsmen were glowing. Daniel said he fell in love with Sarah because “she has a big heart, is passionate about her art, is able to appreciate the smaller details in life, is serious and silly at the same time, calms me down when I’m in panic mode, and best of all, we can communicate about any issues we stumble upon.” Sarah is equally effusive about Daniel. “He’s smart, wise, calm, tall, funny in his own nerdy way, very supportive in every

way, very shy and quiet in public but very entertaining when he’s with me. He reads a lot (I think that’s sexy), he’s a hugger and he’s an expert whistler.” The bride and groom worked with an event organizer to plan the wedding, using the concept of a casual garden party. They transformed the North Garden of Hotel Majapahit Surabaya into a rustic, earthy and natural venue, with hints of silver to add some elegance, perfect for exchanging their vows. The couple loved the decorations and how the event organizer managed the entire event, down to the last detail.

Strike a Pose Hong Kong is a place of contrasts. From its picturesque beaches, secluded islands and lush greenery to its bustling skyline, it’s no wonder so many people choose Hong Kong for their pre-wedding photos. Local photographers weigh in on the best places in the city to snap pre-wedding portraits

Text by Beverly Cheng

T

couples from across Asia are flooding the city to snap pre-wedding shots. Apart from the usual tourist spots, there are also unspoilt beaches, historic fishing villages and East-meets-West heritage buildings that capture the city’s historic past.

In Hong Kong, you can truly have it all when it comes to photo ops, which is why

“I can do just about anything to accommodate couples, but I don’t do Mickey,” says Ann Choi, a seasoned wedding photographer with nearly a decade of experience, who has an obvious phobia about mice and avoids Mickey Mouse at all costs. Many local brides have their pre-wedding photos taken at Hong Kong Disneyland, which offers numerous packages for brides and grooms wanting photos at the theme park.

ake a stroll come nightfall by the old city hall in the heart of the city and you are bound to see droves of couples. Attracted by the warm, romantic glow of the wrought iron lanterns reflecting against the historic stone walls, couples dressed to the nines – some donning tuxedos and ball gowns – pose against carved pillars and twirl down the arched pathway. These very same couples spill out onto the nearby tram tracks, dodging cars as they try to get the perfect shot of themselves kissing in front of the neon Bank of China Tower against a backdrop of Hong Kong’s iconic skyline.

Ann, though, prefers natural landscapes such as Nam Sang Wai – a lush stretch of wetlands far from the city, where fishermen still man rowboats along placid streams blanketed with floating lotus flowers. There are also wooded pathways and lanes where she snaps images of couples walking hand-inhand. “Hong Kongers ask for natural settings and places that have trees because they’re so used to the city; they want to feel as if they’re someplace else,” says Ann. For a beach backdrop, she prefers the deserted islands that make up Sai Kung Geopark, which are all a short sampan ride away.

Sai Kung is also a special place for photographer and artist Jada Poon. “There are many parks in Hong Kong but most of them feel very man-made and artificial,” says Jada. “I love the rawness of Sai Kung country parks.” She has shot numerous weddings in the remote wilderness of Sai Kung and its surrounding islands, but it was a wedding shoot at One Thirty-One – a quaint French restaurant with its own boating dock and beautiful gardens – that stands out. “It was memorable because it combined a beautiful and elegant style, fairy lights, funloving guests, and there was so much love in the air,” remembers Jada. Other photographers prefer Hong Kong’s grittier backstreets and alleyways, which serve as a contrast to the formal attire.

Photographer Joyce Yung enjoys dense cityscapes as the background to her beautiful photos, and she’s particularly keen on heritage buildings, such as The Pawn in Wan Chai. “I actually really like to shoot on any of the busy streets of Causeway Bay, Wan Chai and Mong Kok. They are vibrant and romantic in its own charming way,” says Joyce. She tailors photo shoots to reflect the couple’s personality and interests. She lists Top Deck – a floating restaurant in the fishing hub of Aberdeen – amongst her favourite locations, but she’s willing to shoot just about anywhere that holds a special meaning to her clients. “I like some element of spontaneity, especially for the engagement shoots,” she says. Joyce even did an entire pre-wedding shoot inside the Grand Hyatt kitchens,

because the groom was a chef there. For the best views of Hong Kong’s skyline, Avenue of the Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui has the best vantage points. Once in Kowloon, it’s a quick transfer to many historic pockets of the city including the flower market and bird market – both are located in Mong Kok. Ann also recommends historic Sham Shui Po for its original shopfronts from the 1950s. “Being able to capture a big step in two people’s lives in different parts of my hometown is really a gift,” says Ann. “I love Hong Kong, and I think it shows in every photo I take.” With its bounty of beautiful, contrasting scenery, Hong Kong is a prime place to capture special moments on camera and cherish the images for years to come.

Photographer Panel Ann Choi: Ann tried her hand at various professions before embarking on a career as a professional photographer eight years ago. She’s captured couples in remote corners of Hong Kong and abroad in Europe, and feels thankful that her clients continue to trust her to capture one of the most important and magical moments in their lives. www.annchoi.com Jada Poon: A corporate lawyer turned wedding photographer, Jada Poon believes in taking photos of her clients from the heart. Her images glow with a soft sense of romance, often capturing golden-hued sunshine outdoors and in natural surroundings. www.jadapoonphotography.com

The New Russian Revolution Few cities balance the romance of yesteryear and the ambition of tomorrow quite like Russia’s favourite honeymoon destination, St Petersburg, discovers Nick Walton

t’s mere minutes before the witching hour at St. Petersburg’s iconic Grand Hotel Europe and the elegant lobby lounge and cigar bar is packed with the city’s movers and shakers. St Petersburg’s beautiful sip luxury Russian vodkas served by a dedicated sommelier and feast on Beluga caviar from the Caspian Sea in a scene that’s increasingly synonymous with the new face of Russia. The country’s most historic city is also its most forward moving, as young, affluent Petersburgers flex their capitalist muscle at a host of chic restaurants, innovative galleries and world-class clubs hidden

behind historic facades and surrounded by the gilded edifices of the past. The intimate and utterly romantic lobby bar of Orient-Express’ Grand Hotel Europe is a fitting place to start any exploration; the hotel has long been an icon in a city of landmarks and the list of notables who have called it a home away from home is literally as long as your arm. While the likes of Rasputin, Tsar Nicholas II and George Bernard Shaw enjoyed the hotel’s individually designed suites and the performances held in L’Europe Restaurant (Tchaikovsky

also spent his honeymoon here), more contemporary guests include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Campbell and Sharon Stone. Both Elton John and the late Whitney Houston have performed late-night impromptu concerts in the hotel, the latter at the vodka bar where the city’s A-listers meet for pre-theatre tipples or late-night concoctions, knowing they’ll always be in good company. The 275-room Grand Hotel Europe epitomizes St Petersburg’s duality: despite opening 130 years ago, the

lavish hotel is a home away from home for visiting royalty, celebrities and politicians, and remains as much a living museum as it is a house of slumber. The house has strong links with the city’s arts scene, and many of its sumptuous, individually designed Heritage Suites, ideal for honeymooning couples, are named for Russian icons like Stravinsky and Dostoevsky, as well as for past guests like Pavarotti, while the hotel’s location offers guests close proximity to St Petersburg’s architectural and artistic icons, including the Mikhailovsky Theatre and the Russian Museum. Despite its rich history, the hotel has one foot firmly planted in the present; rooms feature high-speed internet, rain showers and flat-screen televisions, while its

restaurants and chic bars are populated by the city’s upwardly mobile. “Everyone know the Grand Europe,” says Natalya Makarova, a jazz singer and law student I discover dressed to the nines and sipping martinis with her friends in the hotel’s lounge bar. “It’s part of St Petersburg’s history and yet it’s kept up with the city’s development. It’s stood the test of time and now is the place to see and be seen more than ever.” The Grand Hotel Europe isn’t the only place attracting the city’s new generation of affluent citizens. A modern yet elegant performance of Giselle at the nearby Mikhailovsky Theatre is sold out, with plenty of young, well-heeled ballet-goers making their way through

powdered snow from the Grand Hotel Europe’s lounges to the regal boxes of the esteemed stage. Established in 1833 by decree of Tsar Nicholas I, the Mikhaylovsky is one of Russia’s oldest opera and ballet houses and a must-visit for couples in love. Under the Bolsheviks it became a home for experimental music, with several debuts taking place between the 1920s and ’30s. In an effort to attract new audiences, Russian businessman Vladimir Kekhman was appointed general director in 2007, donating one billion rubles (US$40 million) to the restoration of the building and inviting Elena Obraztsova and Farouk Ruzimatov to coordinate the artistic revival of the Mikhaylovsky. The theatre’s full-time troupe has since toured internationally and now rivals

to enjoy, from handmade truffles to diamond-filtered vodka, imported cheeses and Caspian caviar. Be sure to browse the luxury spirits counter for bottles of Beluga and Imperia vodka, considered by many to be Russia’s top drops, and kick your feet up with the city’s elite in the intimate coffee shop at the emporium’s heart.

the well-known Moscow-based Bolshoi Ballet Company, drawing in affluent Petersburgers for packed shows. “What do they know about ballet in Moscow,” laughs one glamorous minkclad patron during the intermission. “Everyone knows St Petersburg is Russia’s cultural heart and the Mikhailovsky prove it with every performance.” Down the road the equally famous Mariinsky Theatre, famed for its operatic performances, will soon benefit from a new 2,000-seat theatre designed by Canada’s Diamond & Schmitt Architects. The new venue will be dedicated to modern performances and will complement the lavish original venue and an adjacent Concert Hall opened in 2007. From the Mikhaylovsky it’s an easy walk to another hot spot located in the nearby Grand Palace luxury shopping mall. Here, Chaika, a unique concept restaurant, is turning heads and pleasing palates with its menu of simple yet elegant Sovietera cuisine. A gastronomic map of the former Soviet Union, the restaurant is as much a celebration of the past as it is a bastion of the future; regular highprofile retro-themed events take place under the restaurant’s vaulted ceilings, while intimate concerts are conducted beneath walls covered with propaganda posters and era-art. Waiters slip past a duo of Soviet-made scooters hidden under the mezzanine stairs as they serve the new generation the cuisine of their parents. Make your caviar selection

from a glass case located beneath shelves of USSR-made toys, Lenin busts and shimmering sickles, before ordering from a comprehensive menu that leans towards Georgian dishes, a favourite with all Russians. The satsivi, a Georgian-style chicken dish served with a walnut sauce, is stunning, as is the salmon tartar with caviar and sour cream, and the delicate pelmeni dumplings. Only a couple of blocks away, city insiders walk off their meals with retail therapy at the Great Gostiny Dvor, the city’s iconic and utterly expansive department store. Not only is the Grand Gostiny the oldest retail centre in the city, it’s regarded as the world’s first shopping arcade and its yellow-hued arches, reaching towards the horizon, can’t be missed. Building commenced in 1757 with elaborate designs by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, but a recent renovation has brought this unique retail setting into the 21st century and now countless boutiques and an extensive department store fill the cavernous space, drawing in a mink-clad crowd of affluent families and tourists from the luxury hotels of the city centre. You’ll also find the social set in the palm-lined coffee lounge at the Elisseeff Emporium, further down Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s most elegant thoroughfare. Originally built in 1902, this acclaimed department store was opened by the Elisseeff Brothers and the food hall on the ground floor is a mesmerizing showcase of all the luxury tipples and titbits the new generation of Russians have come

Although St Petersburg is famed for its classical art collections, much of which can be found in the Russian Museum or the Hermitage, the contemporary art scene is also heating up. The Hermitage will open a dedicated modern art wing in 2014 and galleries are cropping up across the city, catering to new collectors. Erarta, located on Vasilievsky Ostrov or Basil’s Island, one of the city’s 42 urban isles, boasts the country’s largest non-governmental collection of contemporary art and is dedicated to promoting Russian art from across this vast country. With branches in London, New York and Zurich, and with Hong Kong opening later this year, Erarta’s collection features more than 2,000 pieces by 150 artists and is as much a museum as it is a commercial gallery. Another leading art venue is Loft Project Etagi, which is made up of three galleries and exhibition spaces and an art-themed bookstore, hidden away on Ligovsky Prospekt. You can contemplate the collection in the newly re-opened Letny Sad or Summer Garden, situated on its own 12-hectare island on the south bank of the Neva River. Managed by the Russian Museum, and accessed from the Dvortsovaya Embankment, join the city’s trendsetters as they make the most of summer’s white nights with picnic dinners and live concerts amongst the 18th century marble statues and tree-lined alleys of the 300-year-old park. Come Away With Me to Napa

For hopeless romantics and wine enthusiasts, Napa Valley is a place to eat, sip and sleep

ou don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day to try to rekindle your romance. Be spontaneous, pack your bags, leave your worries at home, and take a romantic and culinary getaway to Napa Valley. Napa County is European in its ambiance and yet is located in the heart of California, less than 100 kilometres from San Francisco. California is the world’s fourth-largest producer of wine, closely behind its European competitors: France, Italy and Spain. Approximately 90 per cent of all the wine produced in the United States comes from California.

Napa County became world-famous due to an upset victory in what is now a legendary event known as the Paris Tasting. The movie “Bottle Shock” chronicles the early days of California wine making and the true-to-life events leading up to the Paris Tasting. In 1976, a noted wine merchant from Paris organized a wine tasting competition among top French and California wines of the same varietals. A panel of nine judges, all French, surprisingly awarded the top honours for both red and white wines to Napa Valley vintners. This recognition placed Napa on the map of fine wines.

But there’s a lot more to digest on a getaway to Napa than history. It’s an occasion to swirl, sip and savour the wines that this place is famous for. There are many ways to explore this grape-growing region. By land, there are limousine tours. Ride in comfort and sip complimentary sparkling wines as sweeping views of Napa slip silently by. If you want an aerial view of the vineyard-filled countryside, there’s hotair ballooning, where you’ll be treated to a Champagne picnic and celebration after the flight.

Plan your visit ahead as there are numerous wineries to explore, each boasting new vintages and reserve wines. Should you plan to taste several wines at each stop, do it in the style of wine professionals – spit the wine out. Drinking too much alcohol when wine tasting will affect your taste and judgment. There are buckets for this purpose. The order of tasting is from lighter bodied to fuller bodied and from dry to sweet wines. Your sommelier will begin with sparkling, followed by a light white, heavy white, rosé, light red, heavy red, and, finally, sweet. For first-timers, it can be overwhelming and intimidating trying to understand wine terms like tannin and tart, distinguishing a Barolo from a Boone’s Farm, watching connoisseurs perform the peering, swirling, sniffing, slurping, gargling and spitting business, and hearing talk about “legs.” (Legs, also called tears, are small alcohol molecules that cling to the inner walls of a wine glass after the glass is swirled; the more legs, the more body or the higher the amount of sugar and alcohol. This doesn’t have anything to do with quality but more to do with the body of the wine.) Despite the complexities in the wine world, there is no right or wrong or absolute in wine tasting. Your preference may not be the most expensive or highly awarded wine. The ultimate evaluation of any wine is whether or not you like it. Trust your palate. Wine tasting is a very personal experience; everyone’s taste is unique and different. For those who are more famished than thirsty, a trip to Napa can be a gastronomic adventure. Eating while wine tasting minimizes the effect of alcohol. There are also wines that simply require that you take food with them. For this purpose, some wineries offer an extensive selection of locally produced gourmet items, including salads and sandwiches, artisan cheeses and freshly baked breads, dips, oils and jams. One of the recent trends in the industry is food and wine pairings, where small plates of food are expertly matched with wines. For visitors who want to take home their tasting and culinary experiences, there are cooking demonstrations and wine

same geothermal forces that give rise to the Old Faithful Geyser of Calistoga. The geyser is one of only three in the world designated as Old Faithful because it erupts at regular intervals. Approximately every 45 minutes, it spews a graceful stream of steaming water up to 30 metres into the air.

Napa is an ideal getaway for couples who want to reawaken their senses, with destinations such as Milliken Creek Inn, a romantic enclave that’s sumptuous, seductive and secluded. courses for food and wine enthusiasts at every level of interest. Wine courses include expanding your wine vocabulary and learning how to throw a successful wine and food pairing party. The produce is not the only gastronomic draw of Napa; there is also the ambiance. What could be a more perfect backdrop for this dining experience than a Tuscanesque setting – a panoramic view of vineyards, fountains and densely forested, rolling hillsides. Match that with a Mediterranean climate while having lunch at a shaded picnic ground to while the afternoon away.

This is a destination to ignite the passions, with mud baths for couples, spa days, red wine, fireplaces, balconies with vineyard views and featherbeds. Napa is an ideal getaway for couples who want to reawaken their senses, with destinations such as Milliken Creek Inn, a romantic enclave that’s sumptuous, seductive and secluded. Forbes Traveller lists some of the ways Milliken provides romance 365 days a year: message-ina-bottle delivery, a custom-etched wine bottle, a flock of white doves released into the sky, private hot-air balloon rides and a flock of butterflies experience – butterflies travel in a wicker basket and are released by a special handler at just the right pre-arranged moment. Milliken Creek Inn is not just about romance. It is a place for pampering and privacy. The hotel offers 12 exclusive and very private suites inviting lazy selfindulgence and providing zzzz-inducing amenities like flickering fireplaces, a bedside bouquet of fresh orchids and luxurious Frette linens on a handsome king-size bed extravagantly outfitted with piles of down pillows and a fluffy comforter. From bed to bath, French bath products and green tea bath salts await your soak in an oversized spa therapy tub.

When you want a break from food and wine tasting, you are never far from shopping, entertainment and cultural activities. Oftentimes found adjacent to tasting rooms are gift shops where you can buy wine-related merchandise or souvenirs. Guided tours aboard a wine train are also entertaining and informative.

Choosing a place to stay overnight means choosing from amongst a number of wellrated inns, from hilltop to oceanfront venues, from palaces to stately English Tudor mansions, from homey B&Bs to ranch houses surrounded by acres of fruit trees, herb gardens and lavish lawns. There are just about as many choices for accommodation as there are for good wines.

After indulging one’s senses with the lavish sights, aromas and tastes of the Napa Valley, then it’s time to relax and rejuvenate. Found north of Napa is Calistoga, renowned for its hot springs and spas. The springs are warmed by the

A trip to Napa is one great tasting experience you’ll remember for many years to come, especially when spent with a loved one. It isn’t simply about good wine; it is about good food, good company and savouring the good life.

Island of Love Belitung is hailed as one of the last natural frontiers in Indonesia, largely untouched by human hands. As we discovered, not only is this a true tropical paradise, but one of the best places to stay while soaking in the beauty of the island is Billiton Hotel & Klub Text & Photos by Melani Semuel and courtesy of Billiton Hotel & Klub

I

f there is a heaven on earth, it has to be Belitung Island, part of the Indonesian province of Bangka-Belitung. Belitung is known for its spectacular panoramas and white sand as fine as powdered sugar. It is ideal destination for a romantic escape as you indulge all your senses on this island of love. Having heard stories about the beauty and romance of Belitung, my partner and I decided to have our own romantic escapade. Belitung surpassed all our expectations as we were swept away by a romantic experience like no other. Home Away from Home Within 45 minutes of leaving Jakarta, we had landed at Tanjung Pandan, the largest city on Belitung. We were staying at one of the most romantic and luxurious hotels on the island, Billiton Hotel & Klub, a sister property of the famed Dharmawangsa Hotel in Jakarta. Upon arriving at Billiton Hotel & Klub, we received a warm welcome that recalled the legendary service of The Dharmawangsa. Billiton Hotel & Klub is a boutique property and radiates a minimalist elegance. Our room was generously sized, simple and homey. And, like the rest of the property, it was immaculately clean.

248

We later discovered that the hotel has a long history that ties together three distinct eras and cultures: Chinese, Dutch and Indonesian. Tracing its roots back to the 18th century, the property was originally built in the city centre as a temple complex for ethnic Chinese. Rich in pepper and historically known for its tin resources, during the Dutch occupation a town hall was built adjacent to the temple as a societeit, or recreation spot for the mine workers where operas, dances and other musical performances were held. The property was restored in 2007 and Billiton Hotel & Klub opened its doors to guests in July 2008. The new establishment is a modern expression of comfort and style inspired by the Indonesian heritage of Belitung and is the crown jewel of Belitung historical buildings. One part of the hotel that you just have to visit is the Toapekong. This the remaining part of a large house once owned by a Chinese captain who lived around the 19th century. It was formerly a house of ashes, a place to worship the Ho (Hokkien) and He (Mandarin) ancestors. The Toapekong has stood for more than a hundred years. It started with the founding of the tin mines by the Dutch in 1851. Chinese laborers were brought in from Singapore or from China to work in the mines. The Chinese were led by a captain who was elected by the colonial government to take care of any affairs related to the Chinese community. Ho A Jun, or Captain Ho, was the first and longest-serving Chinese captain in Belitung (1852-1895). In the mid-19th century, Ho A Jun built a home in Chinatown with sturdy pillars and a large Toapekong inside. At the end of the 19th century, the home was converted into a societeit building for Chinese and Dutch officials, before it became partly owned by the government. Today, Ho A Jun’s former house is much changed, but the grandeur of the structure and its history can still be seen in the pillars and the large Toapekong now a part of Billiton Hotel & Klub. The Toapekong has been conserved as a priceless national asset, showing the

diversity and religious harmony that have always been an important aspect of Belitung. Fun in the Sun Belitung is a fantastic destination, and that is without even mentioning the 189 smaller islands surrounding Belitung, each with its own powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters and looming granite formations. On the west side of Tanjung Binga Beach are a string of uninhabited islands that seem to float in the blue sea, little green oases beckoning visitors to make the 30-minute journey in rented kayaks.

Belitung has plenty of great beaches, just not for surfing. The waters are super for swimming – clear, warm and unbelievably calm – but this lack of waves means surfing is out of the question. If you want to impress a special someone, pack a picnic lunch and head out to one of these little islands, where it will just be the two of you, white sand and blue water for as far as the eye can see. It is the ultimate in romantic destinations. On one of the islands, Pulau Lengkuas, stands a lighthouse built by the Dutch in the 19th century. Other small islands worth a visit are Pulau Burung, Pulau Babi, Pulau Pengadaran, Pulau Lutung, Pulau Kera and Pulau Jenang. Belitung has plenty of great beaches, just not for surfing. The waters are super for swimming – clear, warm and unbelievably calm – but this lack of waves means surfing is out of the question. Snorkelling is a much better prospect and Belitung possesses some of the most stunning underwater panoramas you could hope to find. One such site is Batu Malang Penyu, off Tanjung Tinggi Beach, where you will find plenty of fish and some underwater caves. The main bay of Tanjung Tinggi, or Pelabuhan Bilik,

offers a great snorkelling site, about 100 metres out where there are some huge granite slabs creating a magnificent underwater world. Visibility is excellent all the way to three to four metres deep. There are plenty of unexplored sites around the island, so just throw your snorkelling gear into your rental car and hit every deserted beach you can find. One sure bet is Lengkuas Island, about 30 minutes off the mainland and home to some great snorkelling sites. You can explore the beaches of Belitung and some of the nearby islands with a rented kayak, which is a fun and relaxing way to get off the beaten path and blaze your own trail of discovery. Or you can hop on a rented bicycle and explore the island’s back roads. Whatever it is you decide to do on Belitung Island, make sure to take full advantage of its intense natural beauty. People come to Belitung to escape the ordinary and return to the reality of their daily lives rejuvenated and recharged, ready to tackle whatever challenges may come. This truly is one of Indonesia’s last natural frontiers. Getting There So how do you get to Belitung from Jakarta? It’s a lot easier than most people imagine for such an exotic destination. From Jakarta it is only a 45-minute flight with Garuda Indonesia. There are daily flights from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Tanjung Pandan, making this the perfect romantic escape for couples. Belitung’s forte is its intense natural beauty and the opportunity of escape it offers. There is lots of peace and quiet, deserted stretches of beach and dazzlingly clear night skies filled with twinkling stars, making it the perfect destination for couples in search of privacy and quality time together. And there is no better place to stay in Belitung than Billiton Hotel & Klub. Billiton Hotel & Klub Jl. South Sulawesi Wedding Celebration A wedding in South Sulawesi is not only about uniting bride and groom, but bringing together two families

M

arriage is one of the most memorable moments in a person’s life. This is especially true in South Sulawesi, where weddings are not only about uniting the bride and groom, but bringing together two families. In South Sulawesi, wedding preparations involve the entire extended family, who gather from far and wide. All the cousins, uncles, aunts and elders pitch in to make this a day to remember for the bride and groom.

Like many Indonesian weddings, a South Sulawesi wedding involves a number of sacred rituals. The rituals are considered crucial for the wedding to go smoothly and for the couples to be blessed by God. From proposal to the big day, a traditional South Sulawesi must follow a number of age-old traditions. Marriage Proposal A’jagang-jagang/Ma’manu-manu

The family of the groom conducts a discreet background check of the brideto-be, including her family background. A’suro/Massuro This is the formal proposal from the family of the groom to the family of the bride. The two families get together and discuss the upcoming wedding, which brings us to Mappettu Ada/Appa’nasa. This is the phase when the matter of the

dowry is decided upon. Ultimately, the dowry will depend on the social status of the bride and the capability of the groom’s family. Lekko’ Caddi This is the engagement party that marks the acceptance of the formal marriage proposal. The family of the groom brings a diamond ring as a symbol of the impending marriage. Gifts also include betel leaves and nuts, traditional clothes, a silk sarong, sticky rice, brown sugar cooked with coconut milk and eggs, and two bunches of raja banana. These goods symbolise the hopes and prayers for the future happiness of the married couple. Pre-Wedding Ceremonies Appasili Bunting (Cemme Mapepaccing) The rituals during the pre-wedding phase are broken down into Appasili Bunting, A’bubu and Appakanre Bunting. Appasili Bunting is similar to the Siraman ritual in Javanese weddings and is about the cleansing of body and soul and seeking the protection of God during the wedding process. Next is the A’bubu, or the shaving off of the delicate hairs around the forehead of the bride-to-be. This ritual also prepares the forehead for the application of dadasa, which is part of the bride’s wedding make-up. After A’bubu is Appakanre Bunting, when the bride and groom are fed by their parents. This ritual symbolises the passage of the bride and groom from care of their parents to the care of each other. Akkorongtigi/Mappaci Mappaci involves applying pacar leaves to the palm of the bride-to-be. The ritual is performed the day before the wedding,

The door is then opened and the groom enters to perform the Mappasikarawa, a ritual of touching each other. at dawn and again at night. Pacar leaves are believed by the people of South Sulawesi to possess magical powers and they symbolise holiness. The pacar leaves are presented by a few family members who are selected for their social standing and happy marriages. Wedding Day Ceremonies Assimorong/Menre’kawing This is the highlight of the wedding, as the groom arrives at the house of the bride to declare the wedding oath in a religious ceremony. Upon arriving at the bride’s house the family of the groom presents gifts to the bride know as Leko Lompo, consisting of money, clothing, gold jewellery, seasonal fruits and traditional cakes. Appabajikang Bunting Traditionally, only the groom is present at the wedding ceremony, while the bride waits in the other room. After the

wedding ceremony is finished it is time for the couple to meet face to face. The groom is escorted into the room where the bride is waiting. Before the door is opened there is a short exchange between the groom and the escort of the bride. The door is then opened and the groom enters to perform the Mappasikarawa, a ritual of touching each other. After that the newlyweds sit on the bed and perform a series of actions, such as putting on a sarong, under the instructions of a traditional leader. The groom is given layers of sarong to wear, symbolising that he has been accepted into the bride’s family. Alleka Bunting (Marolla) The celebrations continue into the day after the wedding. Members of the bride’s family escort her to the home of the groom’s family. The entourage brings with them gifts as tokens of appreciation to the groom. The bride also brings sarongs for the groom’s parents and his relatives. South Sulawesi wedding consultant Hj. Atty Yusuf SPD (Sanggar Rias & Dekorasi Virta) Jl.
