PATTON AVE.

115KV SUBSTATION > ASHEVILLE, NC

Due to anticipated growth and reliability needed in the Downtown Asheville vicinity, an Energy Company needed a new 115kV substation in service by mid-2021. Multiple sites throughout downtown were proposed, but after opposition from the surrounding neighbors, a new site and process was deemed necessary. The Energy Company formed a condensed working group from members in the community, and after several iterations of air-insulated substation layouts and configurations, a gas-insulated substation (GIS) was proposed. The GIS is significantly smaller and offers a solution to “fit” in the neighborhood. McAdams was involved in this project from concept planning in fall of 2017 through construction drawings. The site takes an entire city block downtown, develops the GIS parcel and creates two outparcels. The project is very high profile in the City, but has been successful in winning support since the decision to move toward GIS.

WALTERS PLANT - CANTON

115KV TRANSMISSION LINE

> HAYWOOD COUNTY, NC

McAdams designed a half-mile long access road to access a 115kV transmission line project on a ridge in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. The gravel access road ascended approximately 180 feet in elevation with several switch-backs to allow truck access to a new tapline and switch for construction and maintenance. In addition to the road design and grading, McAdams graded areas for construction use and designed erosion control measures. An erosion and sedimentation control permit was acquired from North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
