TEE IT UP Well Happy New Year everyone. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and was able to spend some time with friends and family over the holidays. I hope everyone is excited for a wonderful 2022! As we start a new year, I think we have a great staff in place with Brian Muller, Marco Mongillo, & Ross Lally as our Assistant Golf Professionals and look forward to watching them grow more and more as Golf Professionals in the upcoming year. I think we have a good foundation of golf events that we have been able to build on and add to our tournament program for 2022 as well. As we get ready for 2022, here are a few items of note. If you were signed up for any of our Golf Services (bag storage, cart storage, and lockers) in 2021, those will continue in 2022 until you tell us otherwise. We are currently not accepting anymore pushcart/kangaroo storage as we have too many in our cart facility already and there is no space available to hold anymore unfortunately. Also, the golf calendar for 2022 is complete and you will be able to view it on the club calendar on our website in early to mid-January. Information on all of our golf events will be sent to you soon but below are some important dates for 2022 are below: Also, remember to get some usage out of our SkyTrak Golf Simulator and launch monitor during the cold weather! The Professional Staff is available for golf lessons and club fittings during the winter months when the weather is bad. Contact the Golf Shop for more details and availability. I also encourage you to try to incorporate some fitness into your golf game preparation. If you need some assistance in some things that may help you from a fitness standpoint, don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or Dennis as both of us are certified by the Titleist Performance Institute and can help you out! Stay warm everyone and let us make 2022 a great year!

SkyTrak: The Winter Golf Solution Don't let your golf game freeze this winter! Not only will using the SkyTrak simulator help keep your game up, but it will help improve your game as well! The game improvement system features skills assessments, bag mapping, and practice greens. Improve your accuracy with the multiple data points including ball speed, launch angle, backspin, sidespin, and carry distance. You also have access to play famous courses all over the world!

TURF TALK - WINTER PROJECT UPDATE The days are growing shorter and we have had plenty of frosty mornings that have slowed the growth of all turfgrasses. We are now entering into the time of year where we clean up the rest of the leaves that have yet to fall and start focusing on projects. If you haven't noticed we have started taking down some trees that are dying, leaning, or causing turf conditions to decline. Tree work is a never-ending project, but we would like to update the membership on a few things we have planned for this winter. Behind #1 and #11 green we have removed the trees that were covered in ivy and were dying slowly. With the help of our clubs Horticulturalist John Leggoe we have put together a plan to replace the plant material with something new and improved. By the time spring rolls around our goal is to have those areas look much better than it has in the past. Drainage is going to be a large focus this winter as well. Some key areas we plan on attacking is the Approach on #11. Firming up that area will improve playability and help some of our golfers reach that green in two strokes. With the large trees guarding the right side of the hole, the turf takes longer to dry out, especially after a heavy rainfall. The angle of the sun during the winter also limits the number of hours in the day the turf receives sunlight. We also plan on repairing some existing drainage on #1 and #16. The sub-surface pipelines are compromised and will need to be replaced to firm up landing zones on those two holes. There are countless drain basins that need to be raised as well throughout the property. Our goal is to raise as many as we can throughout the winter to help with surface runoff and prevent damage to equipment and golf carts. This is a great time of year for us to spend time detailing bunkers and make them as consistent as possible. We will go through and check the depths in all of them to make sure they have at least four inches of sand throughout. This is a time-consuming task and is difficult to complete during play so we will try and knock these out on Mondays when the course is closed. The last thing we want is for one of our members to hit the Capillary Concrete liner under the sand and hurt themselves and/or damage their wedge. As a department we hope that all of our members enjoy their golfing experience every time they step foot on property. Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t deal us a good hand, but we try and put our best foot forward each day. We hope you all had fun this past golfing season and we look forward to maintaining high level playing conditions in the upcoming year. As always, please remember to fix your ball marks and fill your divots.

Happy Holidays! Brandon Ingle, Golf Course Superintendent

COURTSIDE NEWS As a lifelong tennis enthusiast, I am passionate about helping people improve their skills on the tennis and pickleball courts. I started playing tennis at a young age and played tennis at Country Club of Asheville when I was 13. By age 16, I worked in the pro shop and helped teach kids camps in the summertime. I played tennis all four years at Asheville High School and won a State Championship in 2010. After high school, I played tennis for two years at LeesMcRae College and ranked No. 1 on the team. Following my time at LeesMcRae, I went on to receive my undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and taught tennis at various country clubs during the summer. In 2018, I was hired as the Head Tennis Pro at Country Club of Asheville. This past September, I became the Head Tennis Coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Mars Hill University. I am excited to continue improving the program and working with members at Country Club of Asheville. The winters here in Asheville seem to be more and more milder each year. In order to take advantage of nice weather days, the tennis staff is working to keep the outdoor Court No. 2 open. Unfortunately, it is unrealistic to expect the court to be in optimal condition throughout the wintertime. However, we know it will be nice to take advantage of playing on good weather days throughout winter. There will be many days when the outdoor court is not playable. It is important that you check the online court reservation sheet to determine whether or not the outdoor court is playable for days when you want to play. We will update the court reservation sheet daily to determine whether or not the court is playable. Having a clay court open throughout the winter is something that is unique to Western North Carolina due to our climate. We hope this will add to the experience of being a part of Country Club of Asheville. Tito Poplawski Director of Tennis

FITNESS

5 BENEFITS OF MASSAGE THERAPY DURING WINTER Massage is often seen as a luxurious treatment, but it needs to be seen as an essential instead. After all, is it indulgent to take care of yourself? No, especially during a health crisis like pandemic. In winter, massage can help even more because it serves your muscles on a deeper level. In the cold of winter, physical activity tends to slow down. Sore and stiff muscles from a lack of use can lead to injury when you first set out to break the confines from your winter lair. A good massage warms and stretches your muscles. This friction also helps with circulation and releases tension. Receiving massage in the cold months will prevent injuries when you get back to your usual activities. Here is a reminder of the benefits fo massage therapy to keep you healthy and happy during Winter.

1. Massage therapy increases circulation. Higher blood pressure and poor blood circulation are real concerns. When temperatures drop, your blood vessels may constrict. This not only makes you feel uncomfortable and chilly, but can affect the heart. Massage stimulates the circulation of oxygenated blood throughout your body. This improved blood flow warms up muscles and can make your body less stiff.

2. Boost your immune system. While cold temperatures can play a part in your body’s immune response, spending more time indoors and not getting enough exercise can also make an impact. Massage therapy helps stimulate white blood cells and this boost in your immune system helps you better fight off viruses and infections.

3. Help you stay active. Massage is a therapeutic way to stay active during the winter season. By making massage a part of your workout regimen, your muscles and joints can become more nimble, strong, and energized.

4. Keep your skin moisturized. Cold, dry winter air can quickly deplete your skin of essential moisture. Massage therapy helps by infusing oils and lotions into the skin to keep it nourished and hydrated. This can help stimulate collagen production and improve skin’s elasticity.

6. Promote mental health. Feelings of sadness or lack of motivation—often attributed to seasonal depression—is common this time of year. While a variety of resources and treatments may be helpful for each specific person, massage can play a significant part in improving mental health. Massage helps reduce stress and anxiety and increases feelings of happiness and relaxation by helping your body release serotonin and endorphins.

FITNESS

BENEFITS OF YOGA: 7 REASONS TO TAKE A YOGA CLASS! 1. Increase flexibility and reduce back pain: Tight muscles can restrict joints. As we stretch muscles and move our joints, fresh nutrients flow more freely throughout the body. 2. Increase bone density and health: Weight bearing postures for the arms and legs strengthens bones, and can help reduce osteoporosis. 3. Increase circulation and blood flow: Whether you build heat through sustaining postures or get the heart pumping through faster cardiovascular movement, yoga gets your blood flowing. In addition, relaxation helps relax the nervous system thereby increasing circulation, while breath work brings oxygen to your cells, which helps them function more efficiently. 4. Activate the lymph and bolster the immune system: Yoga movements aid in draining the lymphatic system, allowing it to better fight inflection, fight diseased cells, and rid toxic waste in the body. 5. Improve balance: Regular yoga practice increases your body awareness of how you move through space. Balancing postures help to focus your mind and your breath, and pulls your awareness down into the earth. This could translate into fewer falls, and more ease of movement with aging. 6. Calm the nervous system/ reduce stress/ better sleep: Stimulation in our modern society can stress our nervous system. Yoga and meditation encourage turning inward to take a break from constant stimuli, providing much needed downtime for the nervous system to recalibrate and in turn create an environment for better sleep. 7. Increase a sense of peace and joy: The ancient yogi’s practiced breath work to calm the mind, and feel more connected to the present moment. Did they know the secrets to a more happy life?

FEBRUARY COOKIE OF THE MONTH: MARBLED VALENTINE SUGAR COOKIES BY SEAN O’NEILL, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT TCC

This is a simple cookie recipe that will last for generations. My Nonni used to make these cookies for me when I was younger; at first to be her valentine, then to give to my valentine. Now I make them with my daughter and tell her she is my valentine. Enjoy! Ingredients 2 TSP Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Sugar 2 TSP Water 2 Cups sifted All-Purpose Flour 1 ¼ TSP Salt 1 Cup Chopped Pecans 2 Cups Powdered Sugar Instructions 1. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla, followed by salt and baking powder. Scrape the bowl as needed. Gradually mix in flour, increasing speed as needed until dough is fully combined and no streaks remain. 1. Divide dough in half, transferring half to a clean bowl, set aside. Add a small amount of dark pink gel food coloring to the remaining dough. Beat until fully tinted and no streaks remain. 1. Pinch off golf ball sized portions of dough, rolling into balls. Create a pattern of alternate colored balls of dough on your work station. Gently, knead all dough together until swirls of color are visible. Do not over mix. 2. Shape into a disc and wrap in plastic. Chill for 30-60 minutes. 3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. 4. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick, on a lightly floured surface. Cut out heart shapes. Space two inches apart on a prepared baking sheet. Freeze cookies for 15 minutes. Press together remaining dough and scraps, re-wrap in plastic and keeping chilled until ready to roll and cut again. 5. Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes. Allow cookies to rest on the pan for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
