THE TEE OFF
Wearing a mask has become a new daily fashion statement for most of us when we go to the grocery store, going to pick up our takeout at a restaurant, and in our fitness facilities. After working out with a mask myself and training my clients with masks I have found that these masks might be the best tool that I have never thought of. Many people have been complaining about breathing while wearing the mask. However, the mask may not be the cause of their problem. Proper breathing technique is to inhale air through the nose and exhale through the mouth in a controlled way. When exercising with moderate to high levels of intensity our oxygen exchange rate increases causing a need for more air to get out of our lungs. In terms of anatomy, our nose is a smaller cavity to exhale all that carbon dioxide out of the body, so our mouth becomes the natural choice to exhale with. When not in control, you also begin to inhale through your mouth. The mask can get pulled into the mouth this way and make it feel like you cannot breathe. The lesson? Use the mask to help control your breathing and learn to force air in through your nose and out your mouth.
SUN EXPOSURE AND BLOOD PRESSURE It has been noted by many news outlets and social media influencers that getting outside is an amazing way to boost immunity and increases health. Is there truth behind these claims or are they just words meant to give us a way to cope with being stuck in-doors? Some research done by a Scottish dermatologist, Richard Weller, looked at the effect of sunlight on blood pressure. It found, in a nutshell, that the UV light in direct sun exposure releases nitrates in the skin and can lower blood pressure. Similar findings back up his findings from The American Heart Association. The main take away for you right now, is that blood pressure can be reduced by direct sun exposure for up to 10 minutes a day, or up to 10 minutes before burning your skin. Lowering blood pressure is the first step in a long line of preventatives towards lowering the risk of heart disease.
