CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT YOUR CLUB MANAGER We ended 2021 with a bang, the New Year’s Eve Party was a great success. The Rhondels kept everyone on the dancefloor all night. 2022 is off to a great start with Meet Your Neighborhood, the Sweetheart Dance, and the Super Bowl Party. I would like to thank everyone who attended our events and for your continued support of our club. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of warmer weather! It’s been a cold winter! The staff and I are excited to get the season started and look forward to seeing everyone here at the club. Our golf events are now on the calendar, and we are busy working on our calendar of events for the Spring and Summer. Be sure to check out the calendar of events. Please note, that Daylight savings is March3, be sure to change your clocks 1 hour forward. Here's to a great start to 2022! Looking forward to seeing you at the club soon. SAVE THE DATE - Mark you calendar for May 7th for Derby Night. We will have a hat contest, games and great food. We hope that you will join us. Footprints on the Green Initiative: Water’s Edge is looking to build an exploratory committee of member volunteers for a Water’s Edge “Friends of the Horses/Stables”. This committee of volunteers will work with Sam & me to research, support and explore the possibility of expanding our stable offerings over the next three years to incorporate programming for various kinds of special needs; like equestrian therapy. Starting with non-mounted equine assisted activities and therapies. In the spirit of the McConnell Golf Footprints on the Green, the committee will also explore ways to share program offerings with members in the local community who may also benefit from such niche programming. First meeting is March 12th at the clubhouse at 11:30 am.

A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT Spring is around the corner, and we are looking forward to a great golfing season. The bad weather stretch we had gave us the opportunity to work on equipment and prepare for the upcoming season. We “freshened” up tee markers, trash cans, etc. New Logoed tee markers have been ordered and will look fantastic. The supply chain has lengthened the production, however, should be in sometime this spring. Costs are through the roof on everything from fertilizers to fuel. Not to mention payroll. Difficult times ahead but will do our best to deliver a great product while being efficient. Looking to bring on some new equipment as well, but the delivery of about anything is 6 months+. We are currently about 75% completion of installing quick couplers in fairways. This will give us hand watering abilities in strategic areas throughout the course we never had. Very time consuming and costly, but end results will give us better playing conditions. We did get fairways top dressed before the big snowfall. We also plan to do more “light” topdressings throughout the seasons to aide in the firmness we’re looking for. The Willow tree behind the white tee on 11 is gone. It took a lightning strike, was dying and dangerous. Really makes the view coming down 10 much better. After completion of the quick couplers, we’ll be working on sod. A lot of weak areas to address and we plan on using the bent behind 13 green. It will shorten up that “bail out” but will re sod that area in rough and won’t be missed. We are adjusting our spring aerification schedule to have completed earlier than years past. Plan is to punch MARCH 14 &15.

With our green grass variety being A1A4, this could be tricky. These grasses need soil temperatures to really get going. Looking for Mother Nature to help us out in March to aide in the healing over. Please help us throughout the season with divots and ball marks. Kindly remind our southern brothers, we replace divots and only sand the balance if needed. Bermuda courses only sand divots. Also, as we work towards firmer greens, ball marks become harder to find and fix. However, if we fix ours and one other, our conditions will only improve!! I trust all had a fantastic winter and we look forward to a fantastic 2022!! Fall greens aerification scheduled September 5 & 6

A NOTE FROM JOHN GUTHMANN YOUR HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL Spring is near and we are planning a busy 2022 tennis and pickleball season. Pickleball enthusiasts should plan to participate in the “Spring Kick-off” social on the evening of Saturday, April 9th.Regular pickleball takes place on Monday and Friday at 9 a.m. and is tentatively scheduled to begin in late March or early April. Watch for more specifics in Weekly Happenings as we get closer to those dates. The hard courts are all set for both regular tennis and pickleball. Two new pickleball nets on wheels should be arriving soon, bringing the total to four. Please remember to place the nets next to the fence between the courts when done playing so that they are protected from wind damage. The soft courts are targeted to be ready for tennis in mid-April when our M-W-F mixed doubles will commence. Play starts at 9 a.m. with warm-ups at 8:45 a.m. - you don’t need a partner. Our Grand Slam events launch on Memorial Day, May 30th with a French Open “Champagne, Strawberries and Crème” day. A mixed doubles tennis social will be planned for May. The day and time to be announced. If you are a Water’s Edge “weekender”, then plan to join us on June 11th and 25th when we initiate Saturday morning mixed doubles. This summer we are introducing tennis clinics for kids. The first is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21st at 9 a.m. for ages 5 to 9, and at 10 a.m. for ages 10 and over. Clinics are limited to 4 participants. I’ll put a sign-up sheet in the tennis room in May. A tennis component is also included in our annual “Waters Edge Kids Camp”, which returns July 12-14th. The Navigator will have more details as spring progresses. As always, I am available for private lessons or racquet restringing; you may contact me directly at: 434-927-5039. I look forward to seeing you on court soon.

CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ED CURRIN YOUR GOLF PROFESSIONAL STAFF Spring is on the way! Green grass, beautiful flowers, fresh air and the sparkling waters of Smith Mountain Lake. We can hardly wait! The Golf Staff along with the Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Committees have been hard at work preparing a competitive and complete golf schedule for your enjoyment this year. Our Opening events are right around the corner. The Ladies’ will have their Opening Day on April 14th @ 1:00pm. The format will be 18 Holes of Captains Choice. The 9-Hole Ladies’ are encouraged to play as well. After golf we will have a Membership Meeting along with Dinner. Hope everyone can make it. Our Men’s Opening Day will be on April 23rd with a Shot-Gun start @ 9:30. Breakfast will be in the Clubhouse starting @ 8:00. The Format will be 18 Holes Captains Choice. We will have a Stag Night on Friday April 22nd starting @ 6:30. The Men’s Golf Association will cover drinks the first hour of the night. Teams will be drawn out on Friday Night. This promises to be a fun event. With last year’s Men’s Member-Guest being such a big success, we will be taking entries different this year. For the 2022 tournament, entries will be accepted April 2nd via E-Mail from 8:00am – 4:00pm. If we receive more than 60 entries, we will hold a lottery to determine who will be in the tournament. Last year’s Flight Winners will be exempt and will be in the Tournament. The tournament will be held June 16th-18th. More details to follow. New Merchandise is arriving daily. This year, we will be featuring Peter Millar, Turtleson and Foot-Joy Soft Goods. Imperial hats, visors and sun protective bucket hats will also be available. Ping, Titleist, Callaway and Taylormade clubs will be in stock thru out the year. We invite you to come out and see our newly renovated Golf Shop.

LADIES' GOLF ASSOCIATION UPDATE Hello Fellow Lady Golfers! The golf season will be here soon! This will be the first year we have a Ladies Advisory Committee running The Water’s Edge Ladies Golf Association (WELGA). Diane John, Christal Talcott and Marilyn Hanover are the Committee members. This year, the Pro Shop will be running the Member Guest, Member-Member, Club Championship and Sr. Club Championship tournaments and these are open to all Club members. There will be an entry fee for these. WELGA will still have the Hi-Lo and Jr-Sr, two new 9-hole tournaments, Opening and Closing Days, weekly Ladies Days and Clinics that are open to all WELGA members. We have individual and team games on Thursday Ladies Day. There is an optional weekly $1 game pot and a 25₵ chip-in pot. Clinics are only $5 and Gary helps us with our swing and game. Nine holers typically play on Tuesdays after the 9 AM Clinic, and are invited to play later on Thursdays and then join the 18 holers for lunch after golf. If you aren't a member of the WELGA and would like to join us, please let the Pro Shop know. They will have the Club bill you for membership. Please mark your calendar for the upcoming events listed under the March calendar on page 14. On a lighter note, here are a few amusing quotes that may be helped by attending the Tuesday Clinics with Gary! “If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death.” Sam Snead. “You’ve just got one problem. You stand too close to the ball after you’ve hit it.” Sam Snead “The reason a pro tells you to keep your head down is so you can’t see him laughing.” Phyllis Diller Gary doesn’t laugh at us, but with us! And something that was said decades ago has been true the last 2 years during the pandemic: “Golf has probably kept more people sane than psychiatrists have.” ‒ Harvey Penick. Being a WELGA member is a great way to meet other members and have fun playing golf. If you need a partner for any of the team tournaments, or if you have any questions, please ask one of the Committee members or the Pro Shop. I hope to see you soon on the driving range, practice putting green, and golf course! Marilyn Hanover

THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER UPDATE A NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER, THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER Springtime, sunshine & green grass is finally coming around. It has been a hard winter on all of the horses. Between the weekend snow and ice storms and the artic wind we are all ready for a warmer change. All of the horses are doing well. They will all receive a visit from out local Veterinarian for their spring vaccines and wellness exams and possibly their dental floats.. The horses will all receive their de wormer in May and they will be ready for the upcoming riding season. An update on Hummer: he is doing well. We had a couple hard spells with his arthritis over the winter but he has pulled through. His stifle still gives him a limp and a gimp. He has shown some signs of it worsening but he is not in any pain. He gets a daily small dose of pain medication just to keep him comfortable. Some plans changed at home with our herd of goats and we decided to keep Hummer here at the equestrian center for the winter. Both pigs, the donkies and the barn cat are doing well. We look foward to seeing all of you this year. Camps are filling up fast, please call or email me today with any questions.

CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM RUTH RICE YOUR MEMBER SERVICES DIRECTOR Spring will be here before you know it! We've had plenty of snow to last me until December. I'm ready for some warm sunny days and the return of more members to the course and club. Membership news and reminders: The initiation fee for an active property has remained at $30,000 since 2008. Effective April 1, 2022, the initiation fee will move to $35,000. Any property under contract by March 31, 2022, will be honored under the current $30,000 rate.

Welcome New Members Lisa & Justin Gehtland Stuart & Joanna Halloway Ronnie Hodges

Food Minimum - The service fee charges and gratuity do not apply to the food minimum. Only food and beverages apply. Alcohol is covered under the food minimum. We have a quarterly minimum available: Class I, V, VI and VII is $250 quarterly and Class II, III and VI would be $175 quarterly. This allows you to have three months to use your food minimum. It is based upon the quarterly billing cycle. You would have January through March to use the first quarterly minimum, April through June to use the second quarterly minimum, etc. It means a $100 meal (food only) would apply towards your $250 food minimum verses with a $70 monthly requirement the $30 extra would not. We encourage you to join the WE members Facebook group - information for the daily lunch and dinner specials are available along with upcoming activities. Based upon the rules and regulations, a thirty (30) day written notification is required when you resign from the club. Please provide a forwarding address in case you are due a refund for pro-rated dues. Please contact the office if you are moving to another property. Your member number is the lot number of your property and would need to be changed if you move to another house within the community.

Young Executive Membership Classification Under 30: 60% off annual dues

30 -34 years old: 40% off annual dues

35-40 years old: 20% off annual dues

This membership classification is based upon the primary members account being active and in good standing.
