If you’re thinking about laying down a new lawn then this is the time. Less water is required as temperatures aren’t that hot, so it reduces the amount of heat evaporation.
RENEW YOUR MULCH After fertilising garden beds, renew mulch cover before it begins to heat up in the summer. Once you have planted, add a fresh layer of mulch around your new plants before weeds are able to grow through then you will barely have to do it in the summer.
Spring clean your garden
Check over irrigation systems and reprogram timers with the temperatures rising.
STORY: DYLAN BROWN Spring is the time to clean up after a long winter, and your garden is no different to your bedroom or wardrobe when it comes to tidying things up. As the temperatures heat up it can be difficult to get motivated to get out in the backyard to do everything that needs to be done to make your garden spring ready. Here is a list to follow throughout spring to bring your garden back to life and thriving again.
CHECK WATERING SYSTEMS
FEED LAWNS AND PLANTS Plants as they burst into growth need feeding. Use organic-based fertilisers in garden beds. For pots use liquid feeds or slowrelease products. Lawns require specialised, high-nitrogen fertilisers.
PRUNE SHRUBS AND TREES
PAMPER POTTED PLANTS
Get rid of the winter protective mulch from around perennials and ornamental grasses.
Checking regularly for pests as your seedlings establish is important. But if you are planting anything that is edible, you have to make a careful decision on the kinds of insecticides you use to make sure it’s
Top up potting mix and re-pot overgrown plants into larger containers. House plants need some work, so give them a trim and tidy, flush the soil thoroughly with water (or re-pot), then fertilise.
NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO GET INTO YOUR GARDEN AND GIVE IT A CLEAN UP AND SOME LOVE SO IT CAN BLOSSOM THROUGHOUT SPRING
WHAT’S BLOOMING? Spring is known for flowers with beautiful roses, azaleas and the aromas of jasmine scents in the air. Other scented flowers include lilacs, sweet peas and port wine magnolias.
CONTROL PESTS
IT’S PLANTING TIME
Therenon-toxic.arealso natural pest control methods you can try that are better for your health and the environment. Bring a bit of colour to your backyard. Renew your mulch to keep weeds at bay.
If you hadn’t got around to pruning your trees and shrubs in the winter now is the time. Especially if you have summerblooming trees and shrubs, it is crucial before they push out new growth.
The new season also brings the return of clematis, bearded iris and wisteria. The natives that come out are kangaroo paws, waratahs and flannel flowers.
It’s planting season which means it’s time to make-over problem areas in your yard or plant fast-growing shade trees. Plant your vegies such as varieties of tomatoes, beans, capsicums, Swiss chards, chillies, eggplant, cucumbers, beetroot, carrots, lettuce, zucchini and Asian greens. Basil and parsley are also key additions to your garden.
LOOK AFTER THE LAWN

FRESHEN UP FLOWER BEDS Remove any dead debris and leaves from the soil surface where you are looking to plant new flowers and vegies.
LAP POOL If you have a narrow property and want a longer pool for swimming, don’t fret because you can install a pool running the length of the backyard.
It is important to decide which one best suits you and matches your home.
How you will use the pool is also something you must consider — a pool for fitness will be vastly different to one for just general socialising.
The pool is maintained thanks to micro-organisms and through the use of small pumps.
SPLASH OUT for summer
A garden side pool.
SALTWATER POOL A very popular option across Australia, this is not referring to the design of the pool rather the filtration system. It uses a saltwater chlorine generator to convert bulk salt into natural chlorine to kill bacteria and algae. The generator can be added during the building of the pool or added afterwards. A standard pool can be converted by adding key components. A saltwater chlorine generator can also be added to an above-ground pool, as long as it’s made especially for aboveground swimming pools. Regular cleaning of pool surfaces and filter equipment is needed for maintenance like traditional pools.
STORY: DYLAN BROWN
DESIGNER POOL You can’t go wrong with a modern and sharply-designed rectangular swimming pool, with many people opting for one in their backyards. This type of pool can be built-in or installed as a prefab, and can be the main attraction in your backyard.
PREFABRICATED POOL A prefab pool is one that is either in-ground or above-ground that is manufactured at a warehouse and is shipped to your home to be installed. It is a faster method to install pools than those built on site. The two top types of permanent prefab pools are precast concrete pools and fibreglass.
You can also think about installing a waterfall or fountain to create some soothing background noise.
FREE-FORM POOL Having a concrete in-ground pool is a good option to create a pool that best suits your backyard and is also a good way to save space. It can copy the shape of your backyard and thus maximise the available space as it fits tidily, no unoccupied corners are wasted.
THINKING ABOUT INSTALLING A SWIMMING POOL TO ESCAPE THE HEAT THIS SUMMER? THEN BE INSPIRED BY THESE GREAT IDEAS FOR YOUR BACKYARD.
When deciding what pool to install, there are numerous factors to consider — including budget, size, style and Thinkshape.about the type of pool you want — whether it be a saltwater pool, spa pool, plunge pool or a natural swimming pool, which has become a trend in recent times.
NATURAL POOL It’s a growing trend to install ecofriendly natural pools in the backyard. If you like the organic laid-back look and don’t want to use harsh chemicals, this is the one for you.
OUR HOME // SPRING 2022 // 5
With Australia’s summer heat, it’s almost become a necessity to have a backyard pool.
The best method to have a swimmable pool on your property is to have a narrow lap pool go alongside your fence Checkline.with your local council guidelines as some have rules that it must be a certain distance from your fence line.
When it’s not in use it can look like a pond, water feature or an artificial lake.
GARDEN SIDE POOL Brighten up your garden with the charming addition of a less structured pool to your backyard. By incorporating natural elements, your pool can look even greater regardless of the size.
SPOOL Make your plunge pool into a ‘spool’ — a combination of a spa and pool. It’s a space-saver as it serves multiple purposes. Typically, it has built-in seats and jets. Best yet, during winter you’ll still be able to use it as a relaxing spa because heating the water is fast and economical.
A narrow lap pool sits well next to a fence. Before and after — constructing a swimming pool on-site.
The myriad of options at the Annesley St, Echuca business includes carpets, rugs, timber flooring, luxury vinyl and Underfoot, tiles. the soft comfort of carpet is a mainstay, as is the durability of tiles. The love for timber grains is steadfast, but the look is achievable in more ways — wood, laminate and luxury vinyl flooring.
While the online RoomView tool is visual gold to find favourite looks, the Choices Flooring team provides expert guidance on best options for functionality, installation and budget requirements.
The innovative easy-to-use RoomView function on the Choices Flooring website inserts flooring, rugs and window furnishings into a customised space. “People can click on RoomView and upload an image of their room, then apply anything from the product range to find the style and colours they like,” Russell said.
Choices Flooring Echuca has a wide range tiles to choose from.
In nylon, the store’s Brease collection features carpet technology which is asthma and allergy friendly. “The Brease range is the only carpet recognised by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program,” Russell said. While “the look of timber never dates”, there are many options to achieve the organic look in fl ooring.
“We discuss the different structure of carpets and other flooring options to achieve flooring with warranty for everyone’s specific requirements.”
“We have to qualify what customers require, and it may not always be what they think they want at first,” Russell said. “For example, some types of carpets won’t suit if they have pets, or they may ask to cover over an old vinyl which is not possible for install or safety reasons.
“Luxury vinyl flooring is popular because it gives the aesthetics of wood, and it’s quiet and warm to walk on,” Russell said. “It’s easy to clean and durable, but if a panel is damaged it is easy to Lessreplace.”obvious in the Carpet Flooring trading name is the convenience of matching fl oor and window furnishings in one showroom, available since the fl ooring business diversifi ed fi ve years ago. “We have a wide range of roller blinds, shutters, verticals, sheers, outdoor blinds and awnings available in-store,” Russell said. Through two decades of change, Russell and Angela have ensured one constant: quality products and customer service from a family-owned Theirbusiness.friendly team includes son and daughter in-law Todd and Amber Reddie, and Chanal Hartshorne — all helping customers make the perfect choice.
CHOICE IS THE WORD AT AN ECHUCA BUSINESS THAT HELPS DECORATORS NOT FEEL FLOORED BY THE MANY OPTIONS IN STYLE AND FUNCTION THAT ARE AVAILABLE.
When flooring specialists Russell and Angela Reddie opened their business 22 years ago, homes were smaller and green hues in vogue. Customers could only imagine how product samples would look in larger sizes and their specific space. Then they had to co-ordinate window furnishings elsewhere. Aside from colour and texture trends, Choices Flooring Echuca has kept pace with the industry’s evolution of product variety while also diversifying the business.
Russell said the recent mood for grey flooring was shifting to neutral tones, giving a calming sense of space and the flexibility of colour accents in surrounding décor.
“We have a broad range of carpets in different colours and manufacturing styles,” Russell said. “Sisal and ribbed carpets were big when we opened, now we’re finding wool textures are popular again.”
With “new homes bigger than 20 years ago”, product variety has also grown — aptly reflected in the Choices Flooring business name.

As we emerge from winter hibernation and take a proper look out at our outdoor areas for the first time in months, first impressions might leave a lot to be desired. Whether it’s overgrown or outdated, Our Home has the fix after sitting down with Tracy Heyward from Sabac to talk trends for those rain, hail or shine occasions.
– Removing winter weeds. – Testing your soil. – Checking for compaction. Specifically, it’s super important to remove winter weeds such as broadleaf, wintergrass, and clover before they turn to seed and continue to create issues for your lawn in future seasons. While you’re at it, beat the bugs and apply an effective annual preventative maintenance solution to minimise the impact of most turf-damaging white grub species. The second thing you should do is service your lawn mower and check over all your other lawn care equipment that has been hibernating over winter — just like your lawn — to ensure you are ready to go when the warmer weather growing season kicks in. Finally, get out in your backyard this weekend for some aeration activity. This is one of the most effective tasks you can perform to help your lawn recover from winter and is as easy as poking holes in your lawn with a pitchfork or stomping around in some aeration thongs — yes, they are a thing, and can be purchased from Coolabah Turf’s online store. Still feeling a little overwhelmed? That’s okay. The team at Coolabah Turf is on hand to support your spring lawn care, just give them a call for any additional lawn care tips. Our passion is to produce and deliver sustainable lawn landscape solutions that inspire and enable people to live and maintain active and healthy lifestyles, Coolabah Turf’s sales manager Drew Elliott said. Spring is the ideal time for clearing and preparing your outdoor areas in readiness for summer’s peak growing season. “We recommend you clear away any leaves, branches and other debris that may have accumulated during winter … essentially a ‘spring clean’ … to allow your lawn to breathe,” Drew said Drew recommends creating your very own spring lawn care schedule, which should include: – Servicing and preparing your lawn mower for a busy season ahead.

SKY BLUE Make it feel like you’re on holidays using pale blues and mixing it with wooden furniture — it’ll give a beach sort of vibe.
WHITE An easy and safe way to brighten up a room is to go all white. If you don’t want to go all white, just add airier elements like sheer white curtains and white linens.
