About BH Blazers Prep Hockey The Blazers Prep hockey team was founded in 2006 – 2007. They found success early, with victory coming in their very first game against the Thunder Bay Queens. During the 2008 – 2009 season the Prep team joined the Junior Women’s Hockey League ( JWHL), which is comprised of teams from Illinois, Ontario, Vermont, British Columbia, Washington, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. In their first season in the league, the Blazers won the West Division and finished as league finalists. Within three seasons, the Prep hockey team recorded their 100th lifetime win. Individual Prep student-athletes have also enjoyed success with BH players / alumnae being named to a Team Canada Roster 18 times, and BH players / alumnae being named to a Team Manitoba Roster 51 times. In addition to provincial and national level recognition, in the 10 years of the Prep team’s existence, 63 BH Prep team graduates have gone on to play at the CIS or NCAA level with academic and/or athletic scholarships.
“In my opinion, Balmoral Hall is one of the top schools in the country for an elite hockey player to develop. Not only is it known for its prestigious status in the classroom, but also for its excellent staff and teachers who are always doing everything in their power to help you succeed. The BH Blazers play in top-of-the line facilities and are an astounding hockey program that will help female hockey players truly reach their full potential.” Bailey Bram ’08, Team Canada
Coaching Staff
GERRY WILSON
DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY / HEAD COACH
Coach Wilson now enters his sixth season as Head Coach of the Blazers. He brings an extensive hockey background as well as unique and rich business acumen to his role as Director of Hockey and Head Coach of the Prep Blazers. His playing background includes junior as well as collegiate hockey across Canada and the US. Teams included Winnipeg South Blues (MJHL), Calgary Chinooks (AJHL), Calgary Wranglers (WHL), Spokane Flyers (WHL), and the Wisconsin Badgers (NCAA). Gerry’s coaching experience within female hockey spans close to 20 years. He has held head coaching positions at all levels of minor female hockey as well as Midget AA, AAA, and high school. In his first year with the Blazers he coached the team to one of the most successful seasons ever with a 21 – 8 – 2 record, good for second overall in the JWHL. Gerry received a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the University of Manitoba with a double major in finance and marketing. He has acquired over 20 years of experience in marketing and strategic planning. This serves to compliment his hockey background and ensure that the vision of long term growth and excellence within the program is attained. Gerry’s extensive involvement at all levels of the game has allowed him to gain valuable insight into the female hockey landscape both in Canada, U.S., and Europe. In 2014, Gerry completed Hockey Canada’s High Performance 1 Coaching Program. The clinic, by invitation only, occurs once every 2 years and brings together many of Manitoba’s elite level coaches and also involves a number of high performance athletes both male and female (many of whom are already at the national level.) Most recently he served as the first Head Coach of Team JWHL, travelling to Finland and Latvia for international competition.
SARAH ZACHARIAS
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM COORDINATOR / ASSISTANT COACH
Sarah Zacharias returns for her third season with the Blazers as former alumna of the Prep Program (2007-2008). Sarah played NCAA division I hockey for the Niagara University Purple Eagles in the CHA’s (20082011). In her four years at school Sarah completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Minors in Chemistry and French. When Sarah wasn’t playing hockey or studying for school she spent her time helping coach the Jr. Purple Eagles Program as well as working with SABAH (Special Athletes Big at Heart), an organization that teaches developmentally and physically disabled participants the game of hockey. After returning to Winnipeg, Sarah began working with the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy, a not-for-profit organization that teaches fundamental and development hockey to students ages 7-14.
Coaching Staff Sarah also joined the coaching staff of the MFMHL AAA Winnipeg Ice as the Assistant Coach, primarily working with the Defense and Special Teams units. Sarah worked with the Ice for two seasons before coming back to her alma mater as the Development Program Coordinator and the Assistant Coach of Prep Hockey. As Assistant Coach, Sarah helped Team Manitoba to a Silver medal at the 2015 National Women’s U18 Championship in Huntsville, ON. She’s currently coaching the team again for a second straight season as they prepare for the 2016 National Women’s U18 Championship, which will be held in Regina, SK. Sarah has completed High Performance 1 Coaching Program, which is a yearlong process that allows coaches to attain Hockey Canada’s most elite coaching level.
DARLENE SVEINSON
HEALTH AND WELLNESS COORDINATOR / STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH
Darlene Sveinson’s extensive knowledge and experience with fitness, physical education and yoga adds an elite athletic component to the Balmoral Hall Blazers Hockey Program. She has been a fitness leader and trainer in and outside of Manitoba since 1985 and a physical educator at Balmoral Hall School since 1996. In 1997 she became a certified Hockey Canada coach which inspired her to develop sport-specific strength and conditioning programs for hockey players. Hockey-specific training techniques are utilized to push participants towards higher levels of athleticism while developing speed, power, agility and improved on-ice performance. Darlene’s strength is blending her diverse experience with a variety of training disciplines into a dynamic, multi-faceted conditioning program. Since 1999, Darlene has trained countless male and female hockey players from Novice to AAA, junior and professional levels. Her involvement in hockey-specific training includes acting as the lead off-ice conditioning trainer for Max Hockey School and yoga instructor for Jennifer Botterill in her “Journey to Excel” hockey camp. She is the developer of IceFlex Yoga in association with Focus Fitness at the MTS IcePlex, leading yoga classes for hockey players, including professional hockey players and some of our very own Winnipeg Jets. Most recently she has joined forces with the Fort Garry Twins Hockey Association, providing yoga strength and flexibility training for their Pee Wee through Midget teams. As the Health and Wellness Coordinator for the Balmoral Hall Blazers Prep Hockey Program, Darlene has the privilege to work with extremely dedicated and focused female athletes. In addition to acting as off-ice coach for physical training, her involvement with the players includes overseeing education in sport nutrition, mental skill development, and injury management.

Balmoral Hall helped teach me how to balance scheduling athletics and academics at the same time. My school prepared me academically for university by offering experienced teachers and a challenging curriculum. On the ice BH challenged me to keep improving and also gave me the exposure I needed to be recognized by universities both in the States and Canada. ~Meghan Dufault, ’12 Team Canada, U22 Development Roster
