BUILDING BOLD 2019–2020 Annual Review

BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ REPORT “Most of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them.” — Orison Swett Marden Be it luck, brilliance, or perhaps a bit of both, the three pillars identifying a path forward in our 2017–2020 “Building Bold” strategic vision have positioned Balmoral Hall School to weather unknown challenges and boldly walk through the obstacles of COVID–19, a global pandemic of epic proportion. Those pillars, becoming a school recognized worldwide as a leader in all girls’ education, building an unlimited learning community, and creating a culture of philanthropy and financial sustainability have guided our decisions. When the staff welcomed students in September 2019, Balmoral Hall was entering the final year of a successful three-year journey. The past two years had embraced the development of students off-campus learning experiences, which by then were well underway, and this path was supported by targeted professional development for faculty to embrace technology necessary to realize this direction. Commitment to a “giving culture”

and financial stewardship saw the grand opening of Benidickson Centre, a fully funded, debt-free, creative facility that added an additional 18,000 square feet of space to ignite the imagination of even our youngest learners. Sharing student and staff stories of achievement with the world invited interest from all corners of the globe. Bold plans were recognized and rewarded. COVID–19 has disrupted, certainly, but never deterred Balmoral Hall School. At no point in Spring 2020 did the BH family give up! Not our employees, not our students, not our alumnae, not our parents, not our leadership team, not your Board of Governors, and, most importantly, not Head of School Joanne Kamins. With her unwavering belief that the needs of our students must always direct us, she led this community as we all worked side by side, leaning on each other at many points along the way, to walk boldly through the obstacles that arose from March to June 2020. Preparing this report on a snowy day in November, we are still in the midst of a pandemic, which continues to be so very worrisome for all. While there are times I am fearful for myself and my loved ones, I am also thankful as I feel so very fortunate to be part of the BH family and to lead such dedicated volunteers, those who serve as your Board of Governors.

Our sincere thanks to parents for entrusting your daughters’ education to us. Today, we face more questions than answers; and yet, I am confident that we will continue “Building Bold” with the best interests of our BH girls illuminating our way. In the words of Judy Blume: “Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure, or to be limited by the fear of it.”

Marilyn R. Robinson Chair, Board of Governors

INSPIRING THE IMAGINATION AND COURAGE TO EXCEL, TO REACH, TO LEAD, TO CARE 2 BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL | 2019/20 ANNUAL REVIEW

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S REPORT Disruption led to action in 2019– 2020 and a real appreciation for our BH family of employees, students, parents, grandparents, and alumnae. While the world faced a pandemic of unimaginable scale, Balmoral Hall School displayed a nimbleness and an ability to pivot through staggering challenges. Upon reflection, it is the strategic vision, “Building Bold,” that has inspired a growth mindset among our Board of Governors and the dedication of our employees to boldly go forward, believing in Balmoral Hall School, believing in our people, and believing in our years of planning, which has positioned us for success in pivoting from an on-campus community to an off-campus one within mere days in early spring. To fully appreciate last year, we must recall the anticipation of Summer 2019 as we prepared to open the doors to Benidickson Centre for Arts & Design. Fall 2020 brought the culmination of the most successful fundraising campaign in Balmoral Hall School’s 120-year history, with more than $6 million raised. The scope of what this incredible facility offered had

captured the imaginations of all those who experienced this special place for teaching and learning. Our focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics really took us “Full STEAM Ahead” across all grades in Fall 2019 and into Winter 2020. As we entered the colder months, Balmoral Hall School saw increased interest from prospective students and parents locally as well as internationally, all of whom were captivated by the bold programming we had been implementing for BH girls. Graduating students were just beginning to accept scholarship and admission offers in pursuit of a postsecondary education. By March 2020, we were eagerly preparing for a well-deserved spring break, when we took inital steps to limit in-school transmission of COVID–19 with remote learning. What followed were three months of bold off-campus programming thanks to teamwork, our relationships with families, and the support of alumnae. Our strategic goal of building an unlimited learning community reaches beyond bricks and mortar. We are achieving this in the midst of a pandemic, while

creating a culture of philanthropy and financial sustainability from donations to our Emergency Relief Fund to a 2020–2021 wage freeze as a result of COVID-19 expenses. Our strategic goal of becoming a globally recognized and trusted brand was apparent when our wonderful international boarding students courageously prepared to return to campus for 2020–2021. I am genuinely proud of the actions of this community as daily I am reminded of our exellence, our reach, our leadership, and our caring. Together, we live our values each and every day.

REPORT

To the Board of Governors of Balmoral Hall School: Report on the Consolidated Financial Statements Opinion which comprise the We have audited the consolidated financial statements of the Balmoral Hall School (the consolidated statement of financial position as at June 30, 2020, and June 30, 2019, the consolidated statements of operations and change in fund balances, and cash flows for the years then ended, and notes to the consolidated financial statement, including a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. In our opinion, the accompanying consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the School as at June 30, 2020, and June 30, 2019, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not for profit organizations. Basis for Opinion We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Consolidated Financial Statements section of our report. We are independent of the School in accordance with the ethical requirements that are relevant to our audit of the consolidated financial statements in Canada, and we have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with those requirements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. Responsibilities of Management and Those Charged with Governance for the Consolidated Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the consolidated financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not for profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of consolidated financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the consolidated financial statements, management is responsible for assessing the School s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless management either intends to liquidate the School or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so. Those charged with governance are responsible for overseeing the School s financial reporting process. (continues)

Independent

Report to the Board of Governors of Balmoral Hall School (continued)

Responsibilities for the Audit of the Consolidated Financial Statements Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the consolidated financial statements as a whole are free from report that includes our opinion. Reasonable material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these consolidated financial statements. As part of an audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards, we exercise professional judgment and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also: Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the consolidated financial statements, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the internal control. Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by management. Conclude on the appropriateness of use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our report to the related disclosures in the consolidated financial statements or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the report. However, future events or conditions may cause the School to cease to continue as a going date of our concern. Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the consolidated financial statements, including the disclosures, and whether the consolidated financial statements represent the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation. We communicate with those charged with governance regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

BH FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ REPORT My daughters, Meredith ’14 and Gillian ’17 were both “lifers.” They remember vividly the BH family of amazing teachers, wonderful staff, and lifelong friends. The BH Foundation Board recently heard from Aidan Roberts ’20. She told us of her excitement when she became a student and the positive impact Balmoral Hall had on her education and her drive to succeed. She told us simply, “BH makes you want to be a better student.” My daughters graduated sometime ago, but they, their classmates, and Aidan will continue to succeed because of Balmoral Hall School.

That is the essence of Balmoral Hall School. Need for assistance is great during these uncertain times. We are committed to supporting families thanks to contributions to our Girls of Promise Fund.

Families with daughters who can benefit from an education at Balmoral Hall School should have the opportunity. This is the reason why Balmoral Hall Foundation exists — families helping families.

• We believe all-girls education must be balanced. • We believe globally minded citizens act with compassion and integrity. • We believe lifelong learning is built upon curiosity, creativity, resiliency, and innovation.

THANK YOU, 2019–2020 DONORS — Giving back is part of who we are. Thanks to those donors recognized on the following page, who made an annual gift between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, we continue to enrich the students’ educational experience. Support was directed to the library’s Birthday Book Club, athletics, robotics, production of faceshields in Spring 2020, and to memorialize Class of 2019 graduate Emma Machado’s life. Donors also supported students whose families faced unexpected financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

EMERGENCY FUND HELPS FAMILIES IMPACTED BY COVID-19 — In Spring 2020, we were overwhelmed by the number of people within our tight-knit school community who asked how they could help. Balmoral Hall School moved quickly to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. To keep our community safe, spring break began early, on-campus activities were postponed, and boarding students returned home to be with their families. Our priority was to ensure a smooth transition to remote learning for our Kindergarten to Grade 12 students and to support them during uncertain times.

We acknowledged that many families were facing new financial hardships and wanted to ensure all students could return to school in September 2020. Although our financial aid program ordinarily supports one in six students, we expected this need to increase. Thankfully, a generous family offered to match all donations made to a new emergency relief fund up to $50,000. With the support of 57 donors, the matching challenge was fulfilled between May and July 2020, and 16 students have returned to Balmoral Hall School for 2020–2021 who would have otherwise withdrawn. Time after time, the BH family comes together in support of initiatives that matter to us all. Head of School Joanne Kamins (left) and Executive Director Tina Alto hold a cheque representing $100,000 in funds raised throughout Spring/Summer 2020 for student bursaries. 12 BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL | 2019/20 ANNUAL REVIEW
