BUILDING BOLD 2018–2019 Annual Review

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S REPORT

Since its founding, Balmoral Hall School has cultivated a reputation for leadership in girls’ education. From the women who were the first in their matriarchal lineage to pursue post-secondary education to the girls who will someday create jobs that do not exist yet, our alumnae are perpetually ahead of their time. So much has changed in the past century, including early childhood, primary, and secondary education. What remains are our values.

INSPIRING THE IMAGINATION AND COURAGE TO EXCEL TO REACH TO LEAD TO CARE

Alumnae and parents of graduates know that Balmoral Hall School is the best choice for girls’ education.

Global trends indicate that arts and culture continue to fuel economic growth thanks to the rise of creative industries. We prepare our students for a future in which creativity will be one of their greatest assets with an emphasis on teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

“We’re going to be bold,” we declared in Fall 2017 with aspirations to become a globally recognized and trusted brand, to build an unlimited learning community, and to create a culture of philanthropy and financial sustainability.

We offer a supportive environment for girls’ learning with a strong sense of community. We encourage the love of learning in a place of belonging that nurtures resilience, inspires creativity, and celebrates diversity. We make sure every BH girl graduates with purpose. —

As in 17/18, our boldness continued in 2018–19 with more awards and accolades for our faculty and staff, more scholarships, bursaries, and internships for our students, and more contributions to our Centre for Arts & Design, with $5.1 million raised as of June 30, 2019. With enrolment steadily rising from Child Care to Grade 12, endowment tripling over the past 10 years, and most metrics signifying growth, our strategic outlook is positive. With your support, we persist in pursuing excellence for our students, for ourselves, and for our future.

We believe all-girls education must be balanced.

Joanne Kamins

We believe globally minded citizens act with compassion and integrity.

Head of School

We believe lifelong learning is built upon curiosity, creativity, resiliency, and innovation.

BOARD CHAIR’S REPORT

BOARD OF GOVERNORS We are pleased to welcome LCol Amanda Aldous ’02, Mr. Tyler Gompf, and Mr. André Kriening to our Board of Governors, with thanks to Mrs. Joy Loewen and Mrs. Joan (Rankin) Richardson ’69 for their service to the school community as past governors.

As Chair of Balmoral Hall School’s Board of Governors since July, I have observed the ceaseless effort required to create a learning environment characterized by caring. I am fortunate to collaborate with many members of the school community who wholeheartedly inspire the imagination and courage to excel, to reach, to lead, to care. June 2019 marked the retirement of Past Chair Mrs. Joy Loewen. On behalf of Balmoral Hall School, I express earnest and heartfelt appreciation for her extraordinary impact. Thanks, as well, to fellow retiree Mrs. Joan (Rankin) Richardson ’69 for her service and support. After steadfastly stewarding the 2017–20 strategic vision, “Building Bold,” over the past two years, Ms Nancy Cipryk ’86 has assumed the role of Past Chair. We will continue to be bold, together. I am awed by the dedication of Head of School Mrs. Joanne Kamins, faculty, and staff to lead with a bold vision of pursuing excellence. My fellow governors and I persistently support strategic priorities to become a globally recognized and trusted brand, to build an unlimited learning community, and to create a culture of philanthropy and sustainability. What motivates us is the joy on students’ faces, including my granddaughter’s, as they master a new skill, or start a new project, or pursue a new opportunity such as post-secondary studies. These are exciting times in our school’s history. The Centre for Arts & Design offers a signature educational experience that emboldens girls to be confident in an ever-changing world. A stepping stone on their academic and professional paths, the journey of a lifetime begins at Balmoral Hall School. Worldwide, alumnae are studying, working, and volunteering to their fullest potential. In sustaining connections to their school community, alumnae share a unique affinity. What we offer as a school, as a community, and as a network withstands the passage of time. The atmosphere is quite magical! Every time I visit campus, like most others, I sense the magic of Balmoral Hall School. Commitment to caring, love of learning, and exceptional school spirit generates an energy unlike any other. The future shines so bright!

FOUNDATION CHAIR’S REPORT It is an honour to be part of Balmoral Hall School as incoming Chair of our BH Foundation Board. BH FOUNDATION BOARD

I wish to thank Past Chair Mr. Jim Perchaluk for his service and for his family’s longstanding support of Balmoral Hall. In addition, longtime Board member Mr. Peter Jessiman retired over the summer. He and his family are dedicated supporters of and advocates for Balmoral Hall. It will be a difficult task to find such stalwart supporters as their replacements.

Dr. Aaron Chiu, Chair Ms Michelle Ball ’87

As a parent of two lifers, Meredith Chiu ’14 and Gillian Chiu ’17, I witnessed the impact of the school’s sense of community, the extraordinary education, and the breadth of opportunities provided by Balmoral Hall. I believe sincerely that my daughters have grown into remarkable young women and will continue to succeed because of all of this. Our family is fortunate to have had the means to send our daughters to Balmoral Hall. Both Leslie and I come from families for whom private school was never an option. Leslie, Meredith, Gillian, and I decided to help families with limited financial means to send their daughters to Balmoral Hall. During our daughters’ Senior School years, we created and built up an endowment to provide bursaries. Families whose daughters can benefit from an education at Balmoral Hall should have the opportunity. The purpose of The Balmoral Hall School Foundation is to financially assist these families. My family wholeheartedly supports that purpose. Please join us by contributing to The Girls of Promise Fund by contacting legacy@balmorallhall.ca.
