GOVERNORS’ YEAR IN REVIEW — Students at Balmoral Hall School benefit from a supportive environment

designed with a strong sense of community as they come to understand their potential, develop their independence, and forge their purposedriven paths. Everyone at Balmoral Hall recognizes girls’ intelligence, encourages girls’ voices, and furthers girls’ ambitions. They believe that the world will be made better by our children’s efforts. They share our belief that they have immense potential to achieve great things, which is why their mission – to inspire the imagination and courage to excel, to reach, to lead, and to care – resonates with us. As the proud parents of a lifer, Ray and I have entrusted Anneliese’s education to Balmoral Hall since her first day in Mrs. Bowles’ Nursery class at age three. Whether this is your children’s first or their last year at Balmoral Hall, you, like us, trust that they will build well-balanced foundations for their post-secondary pursuits because of your investment in their education. Of course, this is thanks to the collaborative efforts of Head of School Joanne Kamins, administrators, directors, faculty, and staff, while donors, volunteers, and mentors further enrich our children’s experiences.

KELLY GASMEN, P ’24

In my role as Chair, I am pleased to report that Balmoral Hall School concluded the 2022–2023 fiscal year operating with a surplus, which was then transferred to reserves. To support long-term financial sustainability, we set a strategic objective in 2020 to increase operational reserves to $1 million by 2025, a target which has been successfully met. Also of note, endowment grew by approximately 14.64 per cent from June 2022 to June 2023. An equity and inclusion working group of our Board of Governors, led by Isha Khan ’91, P ’22, ’24, and ’27, has a mandate to create a safe environment where all voices are heard and everyone feels comfortable contributing as we learn from and with each other. A tangible example of this is the open space conference held in November 2022, attended by administrators, directors, governors, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, and students. My sincerest gratitude, as well, to the dedicated volunteers who foster a true sense of belonging while building an inclusive parent association through various BHPA initiatives, including a workshop on gender and sexual diversity delivered by Dr. Reece Malone in April 2023. To close, I wish to acknowledge the contributions of governors whose terms have ended, Douglas Brown, P ’26, Stacey Grocholski, P ’28, Laura (Lemon) Wetton ’03, P ’34 and ’37, and Bruce King, P ’22, who was Chair from 2021– 2022. Mrs. Wetton and Mr. King continue to serve as directors of Balmoral Hall School Foundation. We welcomed Kathryn Marcynuk ’07, Danielle Rice ’90, P ’25, and Jovian Yang, P ’38 to our Board of Governors in 2023. In the next 12 months, I look forward to shaping the ensuing five years of Balmoral Hall School’s strategic vision, together. WE’RE BECOMING A GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED AND TRUSTED BRAND. WE’RE BUILDING AN UNLIMITED LEARNING COMMUNITY. WE’RE CREATING A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY. 2 BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL | 2022–2023 ANNUAL REPORT

FOUNDATION UPDATE — After an incredible year of growth, we have expanded the mission of

Balmoral Hall School Foundation to include the endowment of funds for innovative programming and campus enhancements, in addition to student bursaries. We hope that this change will ensure an extraordinary and financially sustainable school for generations to come. Our vision is to build an endowment that revolutionizes education by offering an exceptional bursary program, a dynamic, innovative curriculum, and a breathtaking campus, thereby empowering students to excel and thrive in a world of endless possibilities. I wish to thank everyone who has invested their time and gifts to support this important work in 2022–2023. Special thanks to outgoing director Leilah Perchaluk ’14. The Online Auction, our flagship fundraiser, raised a record $75,000 in April 2023, which has been endowed for student bursaries, along with $35,000 from Balmoral Hall School’s Class of 2023, family, and friends. A detailed endowment summary follows on p. 6 of this report. With nearly $4M endowed as at June 30, 2023, we are well positioned to achieve our strategic priority of endowing $5M by 2025.

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S STRATEGIC BRIEF —

As hubs of teaching and learning, educational institutions must be

dynamic, ever-changing. At Balmoral Hall School, our goal is not simply to teach an enriched curriculum. Our programs are designed to build confidence, competence, and what experts call “connectedness,” which refers to being a meaningful part of something other than self. At its heart, education is about people, and so I wish to give recognition to the Balmoral Hall School community for your impact throughout 2022–2023. Volunteerism from alumni on committees, boards, and panels, as well as mentorship, has increased by more than 50 per cent in the past three years. A new co-curricular certificate program in Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (TIE) has been established, and Yuzhen “Annie” Fan ’23 was the first graduate to receive this credential. All employees completed Manitoba’s Respect In Schools training in December 2022, and Sources of Strength, a peer support program for students in Middle & Senior School, was introduced in January 2023. Two members of our Middle School faculty, Claire Penny and Jackie Demchuk, received Manitoba’s Excellence in Teaching Awards in May 2023. Balmoral Hall School’s accreditation was renewed by both Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) and

JOANNE KAMINS International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) in 2023. Annual Campaign contributions in 2022–2023 exceeded $800,000 with full participation from our Board of Governors. Together, we continue to pursue excellence.
