BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ PURSUING REPORT

EXCELLENCE — MELIORA PETENS

Annual

reviews provide an opportunity to pause and reflect on this moment in Balmoral Hall School’s history. To begin, I want to thank my fellow governors for their contributions during this last year — you are dedicated, capable individuals who consistently meet and exceed expectations for your role. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank the other volunteers who are passionate about supporting Balmoral Hall School. This includes the members of the Balmoral Hall Parent Association along with the directors of the BH Foundation, as both groups have had a productive year. I am especially impressed by the BHPA’s role in supporting boarding students given the travel restrictions that persisted throughout 2020–2021. All those involved demonstrated empathy and will be role models for their daughters. I am equally pleased with the BH Foundation’s online auction. This creative initiative was a financial success that brought our school community together in a fun way as they sought to “win” their selected items. I also want to thank the senior leadership team, faculty, and staff. In late Summer 2020, there was great stress as we were grappling with uncertainty while challenges presented by COVID-19 were still evolving.

Head of School Joanne Kamins leads the Balmoral Hall School community in responding to and overcoming these challenges. We began the 2020–2021 school year with a plan and a purpose, pivoting as necessary to continually provide students with an excellent education. Throughout the last 21 months, our faculty have maintained educational continuity, and our students have relied on their own abilities to adapt and eventually thrive. Together, we have become a much stronger, more resilient community. Now, I am pleased to report that Balmoral Hall School finished the July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 fiscal year in a stable financial position. It is important to note that as we budgeted for 2020–2021, in flux was how COVID-19 might continue to affect school finances.

2 BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

We knew that boarding students’ enrolment would be reduced as we were limited to virtual meetings with families and agents. We also acknowledged that COVID-19 could still impact families in terms of affording tuition. In fact, we were contemplating the possibility of an operating deficit. Through careful management of expenditures and availability of COVID-19 supports, the result as of June 30, 2021 was an operating surplus. This allowed us to continue adding to our operating reserve and our capital funding in accordance with our strategic goal of financial sustainability. Now, here we are in Fall 2021, experiencing strong enrolment with many grade levels reaching capacity. Families, thank you for selecting Balmoral Hall School for your daughter’s education. We will strive to maintain an unlimited learning community to inspire the imagination and courage of your daughters! Bruce King Chair, Board of Governors

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S STRATEGIC UPDATE — Educating

girls since 1901, Balmoral Hall School is one of few longstanding institutions to have endured the influenza pandemic of 1918, and yet school archives contain few references to the Spanish flu. As COVID-19 spread worldwide during the first quarter of 2020, we often wished we had institutional memory to glean. Determined to provide employees, students, and parents with accurate, informative, and timely updates, we knew little of what was to come. Through it all, the operational and strategic impact of Balmoral Hall School’s COVID-19 pandemic response continues to align with our vision of pursuing excellence. Prioritising students’ resilience and wellbeing, along with families’ engagement in the Balmoral Hall School educational experience, strategic planning for 2020–2025 has been accelerated by COVID-19. WE’RE BECOMING A GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED AND TRUSTED BRAND. WE’RE BUILDING AN UNLIMITED LEARNING COMMUNITY. WE’RE CREATING A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY. Trends in education are evolving, and we are changing how we serve Balmoral Hall School stakeholders for the better.

Beyond the lesson plans we devise, there are life lessons to be learned that cannot be taught. We provide students with the opportunities to learn these lessons themselves. Progress is earned. Patience, fierce determination, and creativity are the hallmarks of lifelong learning. Where passion meets perseverence, possibilties are endless. Fostering a sense of belonging through a shared love of learning, we prepare BH girls for success in their postsecondary studies and careers.

Throughout 2020–2021, Balmoral Hall School communications were timely and effective, community building efforts helped us to keep student, faculty, and staff morale high, and we sustained strong feelings of community. Year-over-year comparisons of enrolment data from 2018–2022 indicate record retention, inquiries, applications, and registrations. With sincere gratitude to 412 donors, Balmoral Hall School’s 2020–2021 Annual Campaign totalled more than $615,000, and the response rate from new families was one in two compared to one in four in 2019–2020. Learning from what challenges us, discovering opportunities amid any turmoil, and paying it forward to benefit others — these are the core beliefs that guide those of us with a professional or personal affiliation to Balmoral Hall School. A spirit of kinship emboldens us. Joanne Kamins

DONOR IMPACT REVIEW Although it has been many years since my daughters, Meredith ’14 and Gillian ’17, graduated from Balmoral Hall School as proud “lifers,” our family recently reflected on the value of their education.

We were speaking with a family who had moved to Winnipeg. Seeking a school for their daughter, they visited numerous schools, but she had an instant affinity to Balmoral Hall. Their story reminded us of when we toured the school with our eldest; Meredith was so impressed by the school and the extremely articulate and knowledgeable student who gave us the tour. Like our friend’s daughter, Meredith only wanted to attend BH from that day on. My wife and I valued greatly the immense school spirit, academic excellence, and balanced education provided by Balmoral Hall. We were part of a community of likeminded parents of various backgrounds, all joined by the desire to provide an exceptional education for our daughters to experience. That sense of community continues today as we remain good friends with many families and we feel a special bond when we meet alumnae or other

families whose children attend or have attended BH. As directors of the BH Foundation board, we share a belief that families with daughters who can benefit from the exceptional education at Balmoral Hall School should have the opportunity to be part of the BH family. With income generated annually from endowment funds, the purpose of the BH Foundation is to provide opportunities for girls of promise from all backgrounds to experience a Balmoral Hall education. I am elated to report we exceeded our 2020–2021 fundraising goal of $100,000! Led by a dream team of auction committee volunteers, our inaugural online auction was a huge success, raising nearly $60,000. A further measure of success is that the BH Foundation endowment exceeded $1 million as of September 2021. Combined with $2.4 million held at The Winnipeg Foundation, endowed funding for Balmoral Hall now exceeds $3.4 million. Ever closer to our strategic priority of $10 million endowed by 2030, I wish to thank our generous donors!

A special thank you to Ms Deborah Metcalfe ’76 for her service after more than 20 years of volunteer support to Balmoral Hall School. As a former member of the Board of Governors, Alumnae Association, and Heritage Committee, she will soon retire from the BH Foundation Board, as well, and her contributions have been incredible. Deb, we are truly grateful. Aaron Chiu, MD, FRCPC, MBA, ICD.D Chair, BH Foundation Board
