2013/14 annual review
Inspiring girls to excel, to reach, and to lead is more than our mission; it is a lifestyle for faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, and alumnae who are committed to supporting girls’ education at Balmoral Hall School. By encouraging confidence, competence, and connectedness, which are essential to a girl’s self-esteem, we, as a school community, influence our students in positive ways. This is evident in our collective success throughout the 2013/14 school year. We are continuing a tradition of excellence in all pillars of our strategic vision: program, university preparation, finance, communications, facilities, and people. Offering an enriched educational experience with personalized university guidance prepares our graduates to attend universities of choice. The Class of 2014 is an incredible example of this. With more than 125 offers of admission and $375,000 in scholarships, our newest alumnae surely have remarkable opportunities ahead of them. They leave Balmoral Hall School with friendships, memories, and roots to cherish for a lifetime.
love of learning endures At Balmoral Hall, we share a lifelong love of learning. This manifests in risk taking, problem solving, and, of course, reflecting. We promote discussion, encourage deepened subject matter learning, and support the development of a growth mindset. What does this mean for our students? BH girls are independent, empathetic, and balanced. Their potential is immeasurable. They raised $22,000 for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation through Girls for the Cure in 2013. They collaborated to share their passions in visual and performing arts at our inaugural Legacy Project Exhibition. They expanded their knowledge of computer science by participating in The Hour of Code. The ultimate team won a second consecutive provincial championship last spring. In academics, arts, and athletics, they prove they are capable of excelling, reaching, and leading with persistence. As a school community, we nurture their growth. In Ulysses, James Joyce writes: “A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery.” Acknowledging this allows BH girls to thrive.
nurturing growth Our students benefit from a rigorous, relevant, and research-based curriculum favourable for girls’ learning as they prepare for university. For example, our ongoing application of best practices in girls’ education resulted in the introduction of our Capstone Program last year so that Middle and Senior School students effectively further their inquiry-based learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Teaching for understanding encourages our students to demonstrate their knowledge by using it in authentic ways. Donations to our Annual Fund enhance this experience. Timely improvements to facilities, such as those in our Centre for Learning, Richardson Hall Athletic Centre, and Dalton House, as well as exciting advancements in technology used in our classrooms, have a significant impact on our students. There is a demonstrated commitment to endowment throughout our school community, as well. As a notfor-profit organization, growth within our class funds, an increasing number of legacy gifts, and personal pledges of financial aid are changing the way we serve you, our stakeholders, for the better.
We believe in developing internationally minded students who take action with courage and conviction. Our shared values foster conviction, collaboration, and innovation. 2014 is the centennial of our Alumnae Association. Our inheritance is one to celebrate. A spirit of kinship emboldens us. With your support, BH girls are able to truly embrace our vision, Meliora Petens – Seeking Better Things. As a school community, we have been educating girls since 1901. Some might call this our life’s work. I am humbled to contribute to this legacy as Head of School. Your advocacy of girls’ learning is remarkable. Thank you for your generosity. a place for all girls

Good energy is contagious; nowhere is this more evident than throughout Balmoral Hall School’s Centre for Learning, which was inaugurated last spring with enthusiastic commitment from all of our stakeholders. Transforming a traditional classroom into a state-of-the-art technology centre outfitted with iPads, MacBook Pros, a 3-D printer, and room to tinker would not have been possible without your support for our Annual Fund. Together, we encourage increasing student engagement.
Curiosity is catching!
“This was once an underused space, but it is growing as a hub for learning that is attracting girls to it in considerable numbers,” says Centre for Learning Coordinator Rita Trautmann.
“Not knowing is exciting,” muses Mrs. Trautmann. “This is a space where learning is supposed to be messy. The centre inspires handson application of knowledge. Through discovery, we are engaged.”
The addition of more resources enriches students’ experience with our Centre for Learning, which also includes a classroom for tutoring as well as the library. Visit this commons during any lunch break, and you will find students collaborating on assignments, sharing information, and furthering their understanding.
Establishing a hub such as our Centre for Learning requires ongoing support from students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, and alumnae. If what we were able to accomplish as a school community in 2013/14 is any indication, there is immeasurable potential here. Let us continue to nurture that growth.

We believe in a comprehensive all girls’ education. We believe in the importance of critical, creative thinking. We believe the BH family is compassionate, principled, engaged.
message from our board As this is the last year of my second and final term as Chair of Balmoral Hall School’s Board of Governors, this is my last message for our Annual Review. It has been an extremely fulfilling experience and an honour to be so involved with the school. Throughout the past six years, I have been fortunate to meet and work with many members of the school community who come together to make Balmoral Hall School a magical place. On the surface, the daily bustle of a typical school is apparent. Scratch the surface, however, and you will find people, who care immensely, quietly making a significant difference in not only our daughters’ lives but ours, as well. This Annual Review provides you with an update on the strategic advancements of 2013/14 as well as the audited financial statements. The school’s financial position continues to improve at a constant rate while maintaining disciplined expenditures as well as investments in our future. Enrolment also continues to grow, and the school’s residence is now full. With your incredible ongoing support, our Annual Fund reached its goal of $450,000 last year. The Balmoral Hall Parent Association continues to positively impact the school with its fundraising efforts. Together, we make this possible. Thank you! I also wish to thank my fellow board members past and present who devote(d) their time, energy, and talents to the school. My oldest daughter, Claire, graduated in June; she now attends university. I knew the day would come, but I did not know how difficult it would be as a father to let go. My solace is that she is a BH girl who has developed independence, confidence, and motivation to make a difference wherever her path leads. There is something magical indeed about this school that you may never understand without first-hand experience. It is the quiet confidence in a young graduate’s face that says, “Thanks, I am on my way.”
