AUDITORS’ REPORT October 11, 2016 INDEPENDENT AUDITORS’ REPORT To the Board of Governors of Balmoral Hall School: Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying consolidated financial statements of the Balmoral Hall School, which comprise the consolidated statement of financial position as at June 30, 2016 and June 30, 2015, the consolidated statements of operations and changes in fund balances and cash flows for the years then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Managementʹs Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these consolidated financial statements in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not‐for‐Profit Organizations and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of consolidated financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these consolidated financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the consolidated financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the consolidated financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the consolidated financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditors consider internal control relevant to the entityʹs preparation and fair presentation of the consolidated financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entityʹs internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the consolidated financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Balmoral Hall School as at June 30, 2016 and June 30, 2015, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not‐for‐Profit Organizations.

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD JOY LOEWEN Meliora Petens – Seeking Better Things has been Balmoral Hall School’s motto since 1950, and it is the visionary statement that directs our path today. 2015/16 was a year of realizing that vision through strong financial results, exemplary academic success, and reinforcing our reputation as an international centre for excellence in girls’ learning. Disciplined financial stewardship resulted in important capital improvements, allocation of more than $500,000 in tuition relief, and fundraising $1.25 million thanks to a variety of advancement efforts. Outstanding leadership by Head of School Mrs. Joanne Kamins and a top-notch group of educators, administrators, and employees made this possible. Our tremendous people, with their skills, passion, and dedication, provide an exceptional environment for girls’ learning as they develop the critical and creative thinking skills necessary for their future. Similarly, I am surrounded by a diverse team of highly skilled governors who bring unique perspectives to their roles as school ambassadors, askers, and advocates. June 2016 marked the retirement of Past Chair Mr. Jim Perchaluk. On behalf of Balmoral Hall School, I express sincere and heartfelt appreciation for his steadfast leadership. Thanks, as well, to fellow retirees Mr. Matthew Guberman and Dr. Michaela Burley for their service and support. We are pleased to welcome several new governors: Mrs. Marilyn R. Robinson, Ms Stacey Grocholski, Ms Carla Goncalo ’01, and Dr. Anthony Battad. I commend all of my board colleagues for their commitment to good governance while understanding and caring deeply about the needs of students and our school community. Collectively, we embrace strategic thinking and long-range planning. In this report, you will see that momentum has been building steadily; we envision a greater future with confidence the best is still to come. Walking the hallways of Balmoral Hall School always instills in me a sense of pride. The girls are worth our best efforts. Together, we shall continue to seek better things.

MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDATION NANCY CIPRYK ’86
Balmoral Hall strives to be a careful steward of all its resources, and Balmoral Hall School Foundation’s priority is the long-term preservation and stewardship of the school’s endowment assets. An independent board of directors for BH Foundation operates under my leadership as we oversee the management of an endowment of $2.2 million in assets, which are managed in part by The Winnipeg Foundation, beginning in 2002, and in part by Richardson GMP since 2014. As we work to grow the fund while protecting the principal, grants are used mainly to support girls of promise. Critical financial aid for bright students from all walks of life is our mandate. Because we believe the student population defines a school, diversity is valued at Balmoral Hall.
Our endowment supports this belief, and we shall assist students in perpetuity. Great schools are not built on fees. Great schools are built on philanthropic investment from alumnae, parents, grandparents, employees, and others like you. Philanthropy is critical to our future. Donations are an investment in future generations of changemakers, ensuring that a BH education is available to all girls of promise. Gifts are often made outright by donors today, but, through their estate plans, donors may also make an impact many years after making a commitment to the future. In spring 2016, we launched a planned giving program by sharing information about estate gifts. This package highlighted the importance of having a will, encouraged estate gifts, and recognized members of Meliora Petens Legacy Society who have given or pledged an estate gift to Balmoral Hall. Our goal is to continue growing endowment at Balmoral Hall School to support girls of promise for generations to come.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL JOANNE KAMINS
For more than a century, Balmoral Hall School has been committed to empowering girls to pursue their dreams. Finding a place of belonging through a shared love of learning, girls prepare for post-secondary success. Emphasizing science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), a curriculum spanning classical studies to 21st-century technology fosters academic excellence. BH girls are risk-takers, their curiosity is insatiable, and, most importantly, they rise to challenges. Instilling this fearlessness in a nurturing environment, educators provide students with countless opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge. Subject areas are aligned to provide continuity, as well as progression of understanding. As they deepen their learning, BH girls expand their thinking. Whether exploring careers in Junior School or developing internships in Senior School, BH girls receive individual attention, comprehensive tools, and encouragement from the school community. Trends in education are ever-changing. At Balmoral Hall, we continue to offer an exceptional all-girls educational experience according to best practices in university preparation. With a mission to inspire girls to excel, to reach, and to lead, we as educators must hold ourselves to the highest standards. Our organizational culture reflects this. Personalized university guidance, including alumnae mentorship, begins in Middle School. As a result, graduates make confident choices about
their futures. Accordingly, they have a high undergraduate completion rate. Many alumnae pursue professional, graduate, and post-graduate studies. Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) reported in spring 2016 that Balmoral Hall had successfully completed the accreditation process once again. Without dedicated, innovative people in every classroom and office, this would not have been possible. We lead by example. Enrolment is increasing as recruitment plans serve prospective families. Endowment is increasing as fundraising plans appeal to donors. We reach our goals. In fall 2015, boarding students benefited from renovations totalling $1.7 million. Campus renewal, including many more capital improvements, is essential to sustainability. We excel in growth. Year after year, we add chapters to the Balmoral Hall story. Community relations introduce characters to this story as it is being written daily. From social media to news media, engagement is stronger than ever. We hosted the inaugural, full school Equity Conference: Understanding to Action in winter 2016. As it coincided with the installation of students’ Red Butterfly Project, we participated in a conversation about Indigenous issues with local news leaders, international changemakers, and many others. If you are reading this, as a valued member of the school community, then you were part of that conversation, too. So thank you. The theme of this chapter is empowerment, and I am honoured to write it with you. 2015/16 annual review

MELIORA PETENS LEGACY SOCIETY Legacy gifts ensure Balmoral Hall School prospers for generations to come. Meliora Petens Legacy Society, established in 2004, recognizes individuals who make this promise. Although charitable bequests may not materialize for many years, members of the legacy society are recognized now. Membership encourages and inspires others. Too often, organizations are made aware of gifts after the donor’s passing, which makes it impossible to show appreciation during his or her lifetime. Understandably, some donors elect not to be recognized publically; however, we encourage donors to inform us of their intentions, thereby sustaining Balmoral Hall School’s future thanks to legacy gifts that align with our strategic vision. Indeed, it is possible to make a difference while remaining anonymous.
