Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆

In Memory Arthur Taylor

August 11, 1957 - June 23, 2021 It is with profound sadness that we inform our membership of the passing BCC Van Driver Arthur Taylor on Wednesday, June 23. Arthur was a dedicated staff member who celebrated nine years of service at the Club on June 5. Each day, he came into work early to spend time with his fellow coworkers in the break room before his shift began. We will all truly miss Arthur’s smiling face and sweet demeanor. During this difficult time it brings us peace and comfort knowing that Arthur passed away at a place he absolutely loved and called home. Our hearts go out to Arthur's family and friends; please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

April Staff Member of the Month Bari Pinkett, Hostess & Server We congratulate Bari for being named April Staff Member of the Month! She has worked at the Club for over a year and always brings a “can do” attitude. During her time at BCC, she has learned, mastered, and trained other employees in three different positions-Hostess, Server Assistant, and Food Runner. Bari always brings her best to work for her coworkers and the members! On the days she works, everyone on our Food & Beverage Team is in higher spirits and they trust her to get the job done! Bari truly embodies our Simple Truth of Great People Make Favorite Places.

May Staff Member of the Month Vicki Mack-Holmes, Line Cook We congratulate Vicki for being named May Staff Member of the Month! She has been an instrumental part of our Culinary Team’s success over the last year. Vicki assisted with preparing meals for our BCC Cares program at the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic along with food preparations at our Pool Café. She has also single-handedly produced meals for all our squash players in À la Carte! She is a dedicated staff member who continuously works to provide an exceptional experience for our members every time! 1

Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆

Leadership Award Matt Crawford, East Course Assistant Superintendent One evening after our Grounds and Golf Maintenance Team left for the day; we experienced heavy rain along with intense lightning. Unfortunately, one of the lightning strikes hit portions of our irrigation system, causing the sprinklers to turn on at approximately 500 gallons per minute. When Matt looked on his mobile app, it indicated that water was running on the West Course. He immediately notified our West Course Golf Maintenance Team and drove to the Club to turn off the water and ensure no additional flooding. Matt’s quick thinking and selflessness were crucial in this situation, and the entire BCC team appreciates it!

Simple Truth Award Madison Hill, Member Relations Associate We congratulate Madison for receiving the Simple Truth Award! She truly embodied the Simple Truth (Great People Make Favorite Places) when she worked to make one of our youngest members smile during a daunting time! Madison learned that the member’s family would not be visiting the Club for their dining reservation that evening due to a sudden injury. After canceling their reservation, Madison immediately asked our Culinary Team if they could bake get-well-soon cookies for the member, so our Pastry Team made a small box of BCC’s chocolate chip cookies. Madison stopped by the member’s home to drop off the cookies, a BCC teddy bear, and a get well soon card from the Club. To say that this family was overjoyed is an understatement! Thank you, Madison, for going above and beyond to create a wonderfully thoughtful memory! John Kendi, Irrigation Technician We congratulate John for receiving the Simple Truth Award! He truly embodied the Simple Truth when he quickly resolved what could have been a significant issue! One day, there was a power surge on the electrical line, which powers the pump station for the Clubhouse grounds, East Course, and West Course holes 4 through 6. When his mobile app indicated an issue at the pump station, he went to investigate. When John saw smoke and a large flash of light, which turned out to be a failure of an 80-horsepower motor, he deduced that it was an electrical issue and shut down the power to the main pump station panel. His quick thinking saved the station from further damage and costly repairs. The loss of use from this station would have been costly and negatively impact the team’s operations and facility irrigation. John’s ability to diagnose and repair issues, his can-do attitude, and his willingness to help coworkers perform at their best are what make John an invaluable member of the BCC team! 2

MEMBERSHIP WAITLIST PROTOCOL With the active Membership Waitlist in place, now is the time to start thinking about proposing your friends for next year. We are still accepting applications and your friends would go through the majority of the proposal process prior to being invited off of the waitlist. • Once their file has been completed and reviewed, they will be invited to interview with the Admissions Committee • If invited to meet the Board of Governors, they would submit a 50% deposit of their Entrance Fee and then wait for a spot to open • They would then be invited to meet the Board of Governors at their next meeting and be elected thereafter Once their deposit has been placed, these candidates will be able to order carry-out, attend special events and waitlist weekends, and receive our monthly newsletter. We are excited for Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan construction to begin in September and look forward to all of the new faces that will be joining our BCC family in the coming months. If you have any questions regarding proposing a candidate with the new waitlist in place, please contact Director of Membership Casey Schell at 410.554.8004 or cschell@bcc1898.com. 3

À LA CARTE DINING

There’s a lot of work—seen and unseen—that goes into the daily operations of the Club.

Photo TBD

The role of our Housekeeping team is to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization throughout all areas of both our Five Farms and Roland Park campuses, including the upkeep of the closed campus during the offseason. The freshly vacuumed carpets, spotless surfaces, and perfectly arranged furniture are all executed with precision, care, and a smile. It's these small details that help create the warm and welcoming environment members know and love. Our Housekeeping team played a significant role in allowing BCC to remain open during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic due to their diligence and hard work. In the last year, these individuals, who are typically behind the scenes, were front and center as the Club implemented rigorous sanitation procedures to ensure the health and safety of our members and staff. We would like to take a moment to highlight the invaluable work this team does, and extend our gratitude for all they do. ◆

FITNESS & WELLNESS

Health & Nutrition Tip By Health, Wellness, & Life Coach Vanessa O’Brey HYDRATION Did you know the average human body is comprised of about 60% water? Therefore, it is recommended you drink half your body weight in fluid ounces (e.g., a 150 lb person would drink 75 oz). Although there are many benefits to staying hydrated, dehydration can influence your physical performance. Dehydration can lead to altered temperature control, reduced motivation, and increased fatigue—making exercise much more difficult. Staying hydrated can help prevent this from happening and help you perform at your best. FOOD & STRESS When you are stressed out, the foods you reach for are often comfort foods, like greasy and sweet foods and alcohol. While comfort foods certainly live up to their name, it is not a healthy habit. When you are turning to unhealthy foods, you can feel better temporarily, but in the long run, you will feel worse. When your body is

not getting the proper nutrition, you can begin to feel less energetic, more lethargic, and in some cases, less able to focus. All of this can lead to even more stress. The best way to fight stress is to have a healthy, balanced diet that includes a moderate amount of whole grains, leafy vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. A balanced diet is the best way to ensure your body gets the optimum amounts of nutrients to fight physical and mental health problems. Some of the best stress-fighting foods include avocado, blueberries, chocolate, walnuts, pistachios, leafy greens, fermented foods, chamomile tea, oatmeal, and grass-fed beef. To stay on track, it is good to make a meal plan for your week and make sure that you have a good selection of these stress-busting foods in your kitchen to make meals and snacks when you feel the urge to stress eat. ◆ For more information on Health, Wellness, & Life Coaching, contact Vanessa O'Brey at vobrey@bcc1898.com

TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME Stretching is as important as committing to a workout routine or playing golf. Our Yoga Sculpt and TRX Yoga group exercise classes will leave you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, balanced, and ready to golf. If you have restricted hip mobility or tight hamstrings that cause low back pain, Marissa offers Thai Yoga Massage sessions where she does the stretching for you! All you do is relax and let Marissa guide your body into gentle yoga stretches. “I play golf four to five times per week and am approaching 70 years old. I have been going to Marissa for Thai Yoga Massage sessions weekly for the past several months, and undoubtedly, this practice has been beneficial to my health. The acute yoga stretches and deep massage have proven to assist with those aches and pains, relaxation, and mobility. As a result, I have been recommending it to all my friends.” Dennis Hill, BCC Member

TIPS from the

PRO What Can We Learn from Phil Mickelson?

Champion in the history of the game when he won the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.

By Pat Coyner, Lead Instructor For over 30 years, we, as golf fans, have been treated to one of the most compelling and exciting careers in golf history. Phil Mickelson has provided us with every emotion that the game and life have to offer. His heroic triumphs, heartbreaking defeats, and age-defying accomplishments have not only provided us with incredible drama but also given us a glimpse of how the game of golf can reveal a lot about us as people. In my opinion, Phil is the modern-day version of Arnold Palmer. He connects with the gallery, signs autographs for hours after his round (regardless of how he played that day), and never backs down from a good challenge. Instead, he challenges himself to be better and displays a genuine love for the game that far exceeds his Hall of Fame credentials and financial riches. This dedication to his craft came to a climax this past May when, at 50 years and 11 months of age, he became the oldest Major

So what can we learn from Phil? As a Golf Instructor and coach, my job is to decipher what makes great players— great, decide what I can take from them, and pass it along to my students to help with their games. One particular area of interest is how Phil has played into his early 50’s and has remained injury-free throughout his career. (Yes, I’m aware of his psoriatic arthritis, and I know he missed some time early in his career after breaking his leg skiing, but he has never had a golf-related injury.) I would not advise the average golfer to copy Phil’s swing, but I do believe his willingness to allow his pelvis and hips to rotate in the backswing has enabled him to “hit bombs” and avoid injuries. Rather than resisting his hip turn and coiling his upper body, Phil rotates his torso and pelvis back and through to generate tremendous club head speed and reduce torque and tension on his lower back. Give this a try the next time you play or practice; your scorecard and your body will thank you for it! ◆

BCC CADDIE PROGRAM Changing Lives, One Caddie at a Time

Thank you to all of the members supporting the Caddie Program by taking a caddie! BCC promotes the use of caddies to honor the origins of the game. By taking a caddie or a forecaddie, you are supporting demand for the program and creating job opportunities for young people in our community. In addition to offering youth the opportunity for a summer job, our goal is to develop qualified candidates for the Evans Scholarship. On Monday, June 28, Baltimore Country Club’s three Evans Scholarship caddies, Samantha Lannon '17, Rebecca Lannon '21, and Varada Maulkhan '21, were featured during Media Day for the BMW Championship hosted by Caves Valley Golf Club.

GROUNDS

THE AFTERMATH OF CICADAS By Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture

The great Cicada invasion of 2021 is just a memory now, but we have seen the extent of their impact on trees across the area. The females’ ovipositors sliced and deposited eggs into the branches of trees and shrubs, cutting off the transport of water and nutrients in the thinner outer branches, causing desiccation and eventual die-back of branch tips. Some trees were barely touched, while others took the full brunt of their damaging egg laying activities. Though the extent of their impact was quite shocking, it is important to keep in mind that their reproductive strategy relies on their larvae falling from these trees into the soil and feeding on the same tree’s roots for the next 17 years. It wouldn’t make sense for them to kill those trees in the process. Many trees have already shed broken branch tips and responded to the cicada “pruning” by flushing out some new growth. Some trees, especially those already weakened by existing, disease, or transplant shock, may not recover and decline will accelerate. We have seen the full spectrum of damage across the Club’s grounds. Some trees like Tulip Poplar and Walnut seemed to barely be touched. Others, like Pin Oak, Red Oak, and Apples, showed a large amount of tip die-back. A recently transplanted Red Oak near the barn on #6 East was heavily damaged. This tree, along with the recently transplanted Willow Oak and

Sycamore at #7 East, was treated with a biostimulant to reduce stress by boosting photosynthetic and cellular capacity and increasing antioxidants and plant hydration. Chinese Chestnuts seemed to have a high sensitivity to the damage, and the two mature specimens between #5 East and #6 West suffered extensive desiccation, with very little healthy foliage evident. We continue to closely monitor their potential for recovery. ◆

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE By Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper In addition to the Driving Range renovation currently underway, the Grounds Team will also be repairing 17 tees on the West Course by stripping the existing grass, laser grade so the surface is smooth and level, and then resod with bermudagrass. No holes will be closed while this work is being completed; however, the tees that are being repaired will be closed for two weeks once they are sodded. This will allow the surface to root and establish before opening for play. We selected bermudagrass and scheduled this project for August since bermudagrass performs best in the hottest and most humid environments, which correlates with our busiest time of the year. The following tees are scheduled for repair: • • • • •

1 blue & white 8 blue 10 white All of 13 14 green

• • • •

15 green, red, & white All of 16 17 green, red, & white 18 gold & white

Now is a critical time for golfers to repair divots on fairways and tees. The golden rule for divot recovery: Once a divot is taken, the first option is, if the divot is intact and soil remains attached, it will most likely survive if it is placed back and tamped in place. If the divot is destroyed and can't be replaced, fill the divot with the seed/soil mix (provided on the carts) and tamp it down with your foot so the mix is level with the surrounding area. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our courses in the best possible condition. 12

August 2021

Finally, the Osage Orange trees, lining the second hole on the East and near the third hole on the West along Mays Chapel Road, were pruned last month by a BGE contractor. This work is completed every three to five years and is designed to ensure reliable and consistent power service to the Club. ◆

Driving Range Renovation CLOSURES & RESTRICTIONS Monday, August 2 - Thursday, August 19 Driving Range is closed to repair the Range field and install target greens near Back Range tees Friday, August 20 - Friday, August 27 • Driving Range tees are open on both ends from the grass • Balls will be hand-picked to allow the sod to knit and establish. The Range will be closed from 2:00pm-3:00pm and 6:30pm-dusk daily for hand-picking Saturday, August 28 Normal operations to resume
