Great People Make Favorite Places
BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
September Staff Member of the Month
Brendan Matheny IT Professional
Even on a busy day, Brendan notices someone’s need for help or attention, and makes a point to improve their day. He played a key role in reopening the Five Farms clubhouse and in the weeks that followed. He made sure that all last-minute requests were addressed in a timely and professional manner. He’s cheerful, thoughtful, and makes the most mundane tasks fun! He is a great example of the Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places.
Exceptional Leadership Award
Daniela Lepe Membership Assistant
Daniela has been instrumental in assisting the Membership Department throughout some of the busiest years the Club has seen. Most recently, she was asked to take over the department’s responsibilities while our Director of Membership was on maternity leave. Daniela worked tirelessly throughout the summer ensuring that all inquiries, proposals, and projects were handled and went off without a hitch. Her knowledge and confidence while taking on these responsibilities has flourished, and she has proven herself capable of taking on any challenge. We are so fortunate to have her on our team!
Every year, the Board of Governors encourages members to express appreciation to the Club's staff by contributing to the Staff Holiday Fund.

A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP
Reflecting on all the new members elected this past year and then acknowledging the year-long (if not longer) membership waitlist, it is clear that Baltimore Country Club is the place to be. Our facilities, membership, staff, and culture all contribute to our success, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we have built. With the expansion of our Five Farms clubhouse and the increase in members returning to their pre-pandemic work and travel habits, the Board has decided to increase the resident Class A, B, and D Membership cap from

HAPPY (& healthy) HOLIDAYS
Your Fitness & Wellness Team has some tips on how you can be your best self this Holiday Season!
PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE
If you feel busy around the holiday season, making time for a shorter workout is better than skipping your workout. Plan out designated self-care times in between family get togethers and holiday events!
Jenna Scott Personal Coach
ALLEVIATE LOW BACK PAIN
Experiencing low back pain from holiday shopping? Try a lying knee-to-chest stretch with a five-second breath hold on each side. A key to avoiding low back pain is to incorporate strengthening your abdominals, obliques, low back, and glutes weekly. Remember to find a balance of stretch and strength.
PORTION CONTROL
Eat all the holiday food (yes, even the dessert) but limit yourself to one serving and practice self-control when it comes to portion size. Your fitness holiday challenge for extra dessert or overindulgence—perform 10 burpees/squats/push-ups the next day!
GIVE THE GIFT OF FITNESS & WELLNESS
A Fitness & Wellness gift certificate is a present that will be appreciated by anyone. When you give someone the gift of wellness, you are helping them open a door to better health, both physically and mentally.
Give a gift certificate for:
• Personal Training Sessions
• Group Exercise Class Package
• Private Yoga Sessions
• Thai Yoga Massage
• Beauty Services
To purchase a gift certificate, please contact Director of Fitness & Wellness Janine Rich at jrich@bcc1898.com
AVOID BURNOUT
Whether you are planning to visit family or staying home for the holidays, remember to take some time for yourself to relax and practice self-care techniques to avoid holiday burn out. It’s so important to listen to what your body needs and make it a priority.
Here are five tips to keep in mind this season:
1. Start your day with a simple yoga practice
2. If your day is feeling rushed or stress and anxiety sneaks in, take a breathing break
3. Pause. Before making decisions, take a moment to really think about the simplest option
4. Get outside! Bundle up for a long walk or a hike
5. Set boundaries. You can enjoy the season in a way that works for you

TIME TO UNWIND
With winter approaching, it's a good time to physically unwind from the season and work on mobility, range of motion, and strength! The winter is a pivotal time in the year-round golf season where one has more time to incorporate stretching and strength training.
Try this quick bodyweight circuit the next time you stop by the Fitness Center:
• 30 seconds of bodyweight squats
• 30 seconds of incline push-ups
• 30-second plank
• 30 seconds of slam ropes
Rest for one minute, then repeat this sequence five times!
Mike Horn Personal Coach
GLAM ON THE GO
The holidays are here once again bringing us more celebration and more parties—time to jingle and mingle! Along with these added obligations come the expectation to always look our very best.
An effortless way to achieve a glitzy glam eye and plush pout is to use Glamstrosity’s Liquid Shimmer Eye Set and Mini Liquid Velvet Lip Set:
• Liquid Shimmer Eye provides 18-hour waterproof, fastdrying, high impact shadow to wear alone or layer with Gemstone by Violette Eye Palette
• Mini Liquid Velvet Lip Set features smudge-proof creamy liquid lipstick that dries matte, but never drying to the lip. No lip liner needed and will not feather. Revel in rich reds (Triple Threat) or luscious nudes (Room Key). Effortlessly blend to create your own signature color
Take time to pamper yourself this holiday season and schedule a makeup lesson with Violette at vassenza@bcc1898.com.

WINTER GOLF SCORES & HOLE IN ONES
During the winter golf season (December 1 through March 15), rounds of golf in Maryland and any state which declares their winter months as inactive, are not valid for handicap purposes. Rounds of golf in the south, southwest, and west, where their associations have deemed those months as an active season, must be posted. As a reminder, due to weather that could effect tee locations and the shortening of holes during the winter months, Hole in Ones made here at BCC are only valid from March 16 through November 30 (as it relates to receiving your complimentary shadow box, Golf House credit book, and complimentary cocktail).
CREDIT BOOKS & GIFT CERTIFICATES
Expiration: December 31, 2022

Greenkeeper’s Update
Last month, I wrote about fall being the ideal time to repair or renovate your lawn if you desire to grow cool-season grass such as turf-type tall fescue. Another practice that benefits our turf in the roughs here at BCC is the mulching of leaves throughout the hundreds of acres of property we maintain. The leaves have been falling over the last six weeks, and we use a combination of leaf blowers and mulching to make the leaves disappear. Also, last month we discussed drainage that is being installed on #1 and #2 East. We are making great progress as that work continues. In addition, in November, we repaired the cart path to the left of #6 green and from #11 green to #12 tee on the West Course. We appreciate your patience as we complete this work and prepare for the 2023 season. We wish each and every one of you a safe and happy holiday season. ◆
Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper
BENEFITS OF MULCHING LEAVES
IT'S A TIME & MONEY SAVER
Forget about raking and bagging leaves. Simply mow over the leaves. The leaf reside will only last a few days. The leaf particles provide essential nutrients to your lawn.
PROVEN TO DECREASE WEEDS
Decomposing pieces of leaves cover up bare spots between turf plants that are an excellent opening for weed seeds to germinate. In just three years, this practice is proven to decrease the growth of dandelions and crabgrass by nearly 100%!

RACQUETS WRAP-UP
What a year we've had for Racquets at Baltimore Country Club! It has been an absolute pleasure to lead the incredible group of individuals that make up our Racquets Team. I would like to recognize our Squash Director Wade Johnstone for being inducted into the Maryland State Squash Racquets Association (MSSRA) Hall of Fame last month. It was truly a spectacular event!
TENNIS
Our 2022 outdoor season had the tremendous additions of a robust junior program including USTA junior tournaments, our kid’s Halloween social, junior all-stars and academy offerings, and don’t forget our end-of-summer pool party! Please keep a look out for registration to open for next season as we finalize our dates. On the adult program side of things, we will be following the great success of Club Championships Finals Night again at BCC. Next year's championships will begin as soon as courts become available outdoors, and Finals Night has been set for Saturday, June 24. Please mark your calendars. In March 2023, we have organized a member trip to play tennis and watch the professionals compete at The BNP Paribas Pro Tournament in Indian Wells, CA. For more information, don’t hesitate to contact me at gleon@bcc1898.com.
PICKLEBALL
Junior Coordinator & Senior Racquets Professional Jacob McGowan continues the success of a wonderful outdoor season, revamping our junior program to new heights with our seven-days-a-week fall program. The addition of Racquets Professional David Loveman to the Team has been outstanding. You only need to think back to the pristine condition of our courts and grounds this season to know how much David truly cares abut the Club and how strong his work ethic is. Likewise, Jody Sambrick, Jr. has had an exemplary emergence in our Team in 2022. If you have had the pleasure of interacting with Jody, it is clear to see how he elevates the entire Team. Overall, I couldn’t be happier with how this team continues to go above and beyond to provide the level of service we have come to expect at BCC, and how they live out the Simple Truth each day. I would like to share a few highlights that the team has completed this season and a few dates you need to save for next year!
The Racquets Team plans on continuing the growth of our pickleball program leading into 2023. This will include more pop-up Dinks & Drinks, additional Pickleball Academy time slots, and extra play-in slots. Our competitive pickleball community ended the 2022 season with a successful expansion of the Monday night ladder, the addition of a singles draw in the BCC Club Championships, and back-to-back wins in our local interclub league. Please keep an eye out for the rescheduled US Open Pickleball Classic hosted at BCC this coming Spring.
SQUASH
Squash season is in full swing. Some highlights so far are the University Club dual match, hosting the US Squash Bronze Junior Tournament, ‘The Great One’ Tournament partnered with the Maryland Club, hosting the Maryland State Tournament, Doubles Refereeing Course, The First to 100 with Wade Johnstone & Evan Berney, and of course,

the 25th year of the Miller Matches! As you can see, we have a season full of exciting programming. Next month, we are looking forward to having our inaugural Squash Club Road Classic—an idea born from last year's paddle season, the Squash Club Championships, and another Junior tournament opportunity.
PADDLE TENNIS
There has never been a better time to play paddle at BCC. We are having tremendous success with our new clinics, lessons, and member-play opportunities. With the addition of another women's team at BCC, we now host interclub matches Mondays through Thursdays. We offer weekly Learn to Play Paddle clinics for men and women and dropin member play on weekends. We also introduced a weekly junior paddle program last month. The social calendar is quickly filling up with instructional camps, socials, and special events. Mark your calendar for the 2nd annual Paddle Club Road Classic on February 4, and the Paddle Club Championships coinciding with our Smash & Bash Racquets Banquet on February 25. We are pleased to offer programming options for members of all genders, ages, and skill levels. As said around the paddle community, #playmorepaddle!
This year we introduced the Smash & Bash Racquets Banquet with huge popularity. This event was designed to bring together all our racquet sports for one evening to celebrate all things racquets. It’s an evening that we will make bigger and better next year, with both squash and paddle playing the finals of their respective Club Championships right before the event begins. Please save the date for this year's Smash & Bash on Saturday, February 25, and register as soon as possible. As a reminder, if you participate in either the Paddle or Squash Club Championships, you are automatically registered for Smash & Bash.
Thank you for your support of Racquets at Baltimore Country Club. I would now like to take the opportunity on behalf of the entire Racquet Team to wish you and your family the happiest holiday season! We can’t wait to get you on the courts in 2023. ◆
