PAT R I C K ' S

SPECIAL RESERVE What is Patrick’s Special Reserve? Regarding technical details, it is a blend of five whiskeys, which I enjoy on their own. I blended those whiskeys with my favorite sweet vermouth, Carpano Antica from Torino, Italy. I used a 3:1 ratio of whiskey to sweet vermouth and separated this batch between several five liter casks on their third fill and several 10 liter casks on their second fill. I spaced these casks out and, after 45 days, drained the barrels and mixed everything back together. Barrel aging is not a science but an art. Even if I were to mix the same whiskeys in the exact quantities, put into the same style barrels, and started and ended the aging simultaneously in the same spaces, I couldn’t create the same thing I have created now. This is what makes me so excited about the unpredictable nature of how delicious this blend turned out. It immediately grabbed me when I first tasted it (especially as I expected a modest result). I was certainly not expecting something this unique to come out of those barrels. It was a golden amber,

immediately drawing the eye as it coats the glass with its luxurious legs. It immediately produces a brilliant aroma that fills the space-leaping out of the glass. It offers up a lasting aroma. Everyone who has tasted it gives me a stream of descriptors without pause; they produce a poetic monologue of the qualities it possesses. Each taster finds something new and exciting within the glass, but the most common being its nuttiness is like a fine Madeira wine and a port-like bouquet of rich fruit character.

[The Special Reserve] immediately produces a brilliant aroma that fills the spaceleaping out of the glass. The palette brings a warming sweetness, exactly like a port wine with a deep caramel and vanilla richness. Every time I taste this Special Reserve, it baffles me how easily it drinks when served neat, and how it doesn’t seem like a whiskey at first, but as a dessert wine.

4

March 2021

After pondering this glass with the company of members, I decided upon their recommendation to serve The Special Reserve in the way I have. Rather than mixing it into a Manhattan cocktail or serving on ice, it will be served neat in a wine glass. Chef Kevin Keller and Chef Michael Wilkinson have created a delicious and perfectly crisp pizzelle, infused with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and black benne seeds. This crisp is served as an accompaniment to The Special Reserve. I only have a modest supply of The Special Reserve and when it is gone, it’s gone. That is the beauty of it-you can only get it now and only at BCC. I hope you will join us to celebrate the beauty of The Special Reserve. Celebrate its impermanence and the fleeting hedonistic joy contained in the glass. Most of all, celebrate the joy I hope you feel when considering how special it is to be part of the BCC family. ◆

FITNESS & WELLNESS

Align your golf game with

ALIGNMENT YOGA

Alignment Yoga classes are designed to help our athletes learn about the anatomy and biomechanics of the body from a different perspective-through body awareness and focusing the mind. We slow the practice down to allow time and space to feel what the student's body is feeling. Just because we slow the practice down, does not mean the postures are not challenging. The practice has benefits for

athletes who are new to yoga, or someone who regularly practices yoga. Alignment Yoga should not be compared to a workout, think of it as a “work in.” It is designed to balance the benefits of your training and enhance it. ◆

These are some of the benefits athletes experience from a regular yoga practice:

Increased power When the body is properly aligned, force can be transmitted much more efficiently. This adds to the power of your movements.

Better endurance Alignment Yoga focuses on the breath. When in touch with the breath, respiratory capacity can improve through awareness of the inhale/exhale. Improved use of the breath enhances circulation, efficiency of motion, and endurance

Improved balance & body awareness Blending stability with mobility is one of the hallmarks of Alignment Yoga. Improved balance creates a feeling of being more grounded and resilient. As a result, performance is enhanced, and a challenging training becomes more efficient.

Injury prevention As athletes, competitive longevity and consistent progress is important. Healthy alignment protects the joints, and balances muscle groups to prevent injury that stalls progress.

Improved focus Working to bring the mind into the present moment improves focus. We begin every Alignment Yoga class with a few minutes of meditation. With regular practice, a focused mind on the mat improves a focused mind in training and performance.

You can find our Alignment Yoga for Golfers classes on our Group Exercise class schedule located under Fitness on the BCC website. For private sessions with BCC Therapeutic Yoga Instructor Rebecca Printen, contact her at rprinten@bcc1898.com. 10

FITNESS & WELLNESS

THAI YOGA MASSAGE AT BCC Enjoy the benefits of relaxation, massage, yoga, and energy work in this truly unique experience connecting the body and mind through the breath. You will fully relax, let go of physical and emotional stress, and allow the practitioner to guide your body into gentle stretching followed by massage along the meridian lines in the body. You will leave feeling relaxed, restored, and rejuvenated. The Thai Practitioner presses and kneads the muscles with their hands, feet, and forearms, synchronized with the breath and fluently moves and twists your body into yoga stretches. The massage sessions are given on a memory foam mat in four positions: lying supine, side lying, lying prone, and seated. All COVID-19 guidelines will be followed during these sessions. Your comfort is the primary concern, and in general, the recipient of Thai Yoga Massage should wear loose comfortable clothing that they can stretch in. While relaxing, the client may become cooler. It is recommended to wear long sleeves, socks, and an optional blanket for comfort. 30, 60, or 90-minute sessions available in the Group Exercise Studio located on the second floor of the Five Farms clubhouse. ◆ To schedule your session, contact Marissa at mloforte@bcc1898.com.

Meet Marissa Loforte Marissa grew up enjoying yoga, weightlifting, 15K races, and the great outdoors in upstate New York. Her upbringing led her into a passion of pairing yoga principles with exercise and sharing that passion with others. Marissa has been a personal trainer for six years, a 200RYT yoga instructor, a group exercise instructor, and a Thai Yoga massage practitioner. Philosophy: “Appreciate and learn from the harder days. Continuously chase after your goals. Accept and focus on the now— and you will succeed.”

Your Success is  Our Success I am a 50-year-old man, who would historically simply get on the treadmill, punch out 40 minutes or whatever I had time for daily, and get back to work sitting behind a desk as an attorney. At around 45, I noticed my running was falling off. More bothersome, I seemed to be constantly plagued by sore knees, back, shoulders, and hips. I knew I needed to broaden my approach to physical fitness, but I resisted making any adjustments for several years. At my 50th birthday in August, my back and shoulder problems had become too severe to simply ignore. I consulted with Janine on what type of program could possibly address my chronic aches and pains. Janine put me on a program that started with a series of stretches and exercises that open my locked body, imbalance, and poor posture from hunching over a lap top all day, and multi-tasking with an iPhone clutched between my shoulder and head (sound familiar?). After months of progress that gradually incorporated weight training and a diverse series of exercises, I feel like a different person. My cardio, golf swing, posture and sleeping are all better. Under Janine's approach, I have not had the aches and pains for months. If demographic and symptoms sound familiar, I highly recommend that you consult with Janine. My only regret is that it took me five years of running and struggling with the various pains before I got on Janine's program. I am a very appreciative, satisfied client of Janine's. Timothy Perry, BCC Member

Marissa is available for personal training at Five Farms and Roland Park. She looks forward to offering group exercise classes and adding additional fitness programs. 11

4 WAYS

GOLF

T O S TA R T T H E G O L F S E A S O N S U C C E S S F U L LY by Pat Coyner, Lead Instructor For many of us, March signals the end of hibernation and the start of another much-anticipated golf season. We put away the skis and break out the clubs as soon as the thermometer climbs above 50 degrees. Early spring is an exciting time at BCC! Here are four suggestions on how to enjoy the beginning of the golf season. ◆

1

2

CREATE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Golf is not like riding a bike. The first few rounds are probably going to give you a little bit of everything. You will experience some great shots, followed by some miserable shots with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Your timing will not be sharp, and your swing speed will be slower, so patience will be a key ingredient to your success. Realize it’s okay not to keep score or only to play nine holes until your body, mind, and skills are ready to be put to the test.

3

4

SETTING GOALS Many of us have goals, but very few of us actually achieve them. Instead of saying, “I want to get my handicap from a 12 to an eight,” take some time to assess your game honestly. If you can identify your current weaknesses, you’re on your way to improvement. Instead of focusing on tangible results, make it a goal to improve how you achieve those results. Become a better bunker player, improve your course management and strategic skills, and take a green reading course to help eliminate three putts. Try this approach—I think you will love the outcome! 14

ESTABLISH YOUR FEELS Oddly enough, a player’s full swing doesn’t deteriorate as much over long breaks as their “feel” shots do (short game). Be sure to start small in your first few practice sessions, spending most of your time on putting, chipping, pitching, and partial wedges. These are the areas of the game that require touch and feel, so start close to the hole, then work your way back.

March 2021

ENJOY YOURSELF I know, it’s much easier said than done. Golf can be extremely stressful, especially when you care deeply about it and dedicate your time to becoming better. At the risk of sounding cliché, golf should be one of the most enjoyable things we do. We play at a beautiful Club with some of our closest friends, and even get to pass along this great game to younger generations. Enjoy the complexity, the difficulty, the excitement, and the ever-changing nature of the game. Golf requires patience and humility, but it also provides joy and happiness-so enjoy it all!

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE by Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper In the December issue, we discussed the work we were doing on the East Course Long-Term Maintenance Plan, developed in 2018 with implementation starting in 2019. Our team finished the drainage on the lower #11 fairway and roughs (between the tee and creek) and the installation of a forward tee on this hole. We will also be extending fairways closer to the tee boxes on holes #7, #10, and #16, and transplanting a large willow oak in the left rough on #7. These improvements are scheduled to be complete by the beginning of the 2021 golf season. To date, 2.2 miles of the 15+ miles of pipe have been installed as part of our Drainage Master Plan. We continue to make progress and are confident we can maximize the collection and transportation of drainage water and provide a consistently well-drained soil profile, healthy playing surfaces that can withstand the summer stress periods, and firm playing surfaces.

• Painted and refurbished course and grounds accessories utilized during the 2020 season • Landscape cleanup and pruning (including the apple orchards on the East Course) • Irrigation improvements and repairs • Pumpstation repairs and maintenance • Green, tee, and fairway aeration and topdressing • Split firewood for clubhouse and firepit use • Staff training in turfgrass and landscape management • Sod projects including the Adirondack area and high traffic areas around greens, tees, and cart paths • Staff recruiting for the 2021 season

#11 Forward Tee

What Keeps the Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team Busy in Winter? The most significant golf course improvements are made during the offseason. In November 2020, we began with our East Course Enhancement and then continued with select removal of small trees and underbrush on areas of the West Course (right #12 fairway and #15 green). This work will improve growing conditions and playability. These types of projects take a significant amount of time and labor to complete. Our Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team prioritizes daily play and Club events, leaving limited time for course improvements, especially during the 2020 season, with record rounds of play on both courses. Even though our staff is reduced by over 50%, the real gains are achieved when man-hours are available, and work can be performed without interfering with play.

Course Openings & Closings Weather permitting, The East Course is scheduled to open for the season on Friday, March 26. We are excited for you to see the results of our team’s hard work. When the East Course opens, you may still see a few aeration holes from work completed this past winter. Cold temperatures did not allow the holes to completely heal over the winter season. The West Course will close March 29 through March 31 for green aeration and topdressing, along with solid tine fairway aeration. Regarding the West fairways, they continue to mature and have come through the winter with no issues. GROUNDS

Let's Get GARDENING by Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture March is always a welcome month for gardeners, as it signals the end of winter and the coming of spring. The Horticulture Team took advantage of mild winter weather by completing dormant pruning, transplanting shrubs, adjusting bedlines, planning annual displays, procuring plants, and even laying sod throughout January! We also brought in a crew to prune the apple trees in our orchard to maintain them at a manageable size for harvest and thin the interior branches to allow for better airflow and ease of harvest. We do this biennially and it takes about one week to complete.

Now is also a great time to cut back and divide perennials. Many of us took gardening to a whole new level last year amid the pandemic, and division is a great way to create free plants to fuel a new found love of gardening. Most plants can be divided after a few years in the ground, by digging up the whole clump and separating (into pieces with three to five shoots) with pruning shears or a garden knife. Plant right away into the garden or pot them up to share with a friend! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at cwagner@bcc1898.com. I’m always happy to help. Happy gardening! ◆

As the weather warms and you are ready to tackle some garden tasks at home, remember that late winter and early spring is a great time for pruning, planting, and transplanting. Though it is not a good time to prune spring bloomers (like Azaleas and Lilacs), it is a great time to reduce the size and control the shape of summerflowering shrubs like Hydrangea, Elderberry, Roses, and Butterfly Bushes. Always start with thinning cuts (cuts that remove branches down to their base) to remove dead wood and any limbs that are crossing or rubbing. Then you can proceed to make heading cuts (cuts that shorten the length of each branch). 16

March 2021

Divide groundcovers, like this native Chrysogonum (Goldenstar), by digging clumps from an established swath and transplanting to a new location. Backfill holes with soil and the groundcover will fill back in within a few weeks
