Great People Make Favorite & Safer Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.
July Staff Member of the Month Aidan Dougherty, Bag Room Attendant We would like to congratulate Aidan for being named July Staff Member of the Month! As one of our more tenured Bag Room staff, Aidan has shown his leadership in this role especially as we are having one of our busiest seasons of golf ever and the Bag Room is nonstop open to close! According to our Director of Outside Member Services Paul, Aidan has been someone who can be counted on to help carry the load and assist the team in staying ahead for the day. Aidan always volunteers to work shifts and helps our Golf Professionals with camps or range setups whenever there are events happening. He took the initiative in calling a vendor to have the golf cart screens repaired so those carts could be put back in rotation as soon as possible during this busy golf season! In everything he does, Aidan is always upbeat, positive, and helps to lift the morale in the Bag Room.
Exceptional Leadership Award Alex Kiblin, Head of Junior Racquets Programming & Adult Coordinator We congratulate Alex for receiving the Exceptional Leadership award! He was responsible for growing our Junior Racquets program this year in a time of constant uncertainty and change. He has adjusted to new staff, new programming, COVID-19 guidelines, and special events, all while running junior camps which saw record attendance! According to our Director of Racquets Jarrett, Alex is always patient, organized, and helpful to his fellow staff members. He managed to keep presenting new ideas for programming and helped with scheduling the Racquets team for camps, court maintenance, and tennis and pickleball lessons. Alex has inspired the summer staff in so many ways and is so vital to the success of racquets as a whole. He is always available when needed, is dedicated to his role, and has a desire to keep improving and growing.
Summer Season Superstar Award Brandon Day, Summer Racquets Professional Congratulations Brandon for receiving the Summer Season Superstar award! From the first day Brandon arrived to the day he left to go back to school, he exhibited a positive and uplifting energy that was felt by the entire membership! According to our Director of Racquets Jarrett Chirico, Brandon’s ability to work with the eight and under group changed the summer experience for everyone and he also made incredible programs like Get Away Game Night happen because he was always thinking what else can we do for our members. Additionally, he has such a love for the industry and for BCC that it could be felt everywhere. He is an exceptional Professional that went above and beyond his duties to make a positive experience for our membership and staff! 1

MEET OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP I would like to thank everyone I have met thus far for the overwhelmingly warm welcome to Baltimore Country Club. Having worked at the Elkridge Club for the past 14 years, moving on was bittersweet. I worked with Kent Johnson for 11 of those years, so getting the opportunity to work with him again means a lot to me. The Simple Truth has been the foundation for almost my entire career, and I love that this message will continue to be my guiding compass. The culture that BCC has created is one that is not only a reflection of its membership, but that of the entire staff. Being a part of a club and team of this caliber is something I am proud of and I cannot wait to meet you.
Outside of work, I am the proud mother to my two-year-old son Fritz, three-month-old daughter Rose, and our English Labrador. My husband Eric and I live in Towson, where I grew up and I could not be more excited to continue working at another local club.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB!

BCC POLICY UPDATES During the COVID-19 crisis, the Club implemented more lenient Electronic Device and Dress Code Policies. These policy changes were made to temporarily alleviate some of our more restrictive guidelines during an already stressful time. The updated policies permitted texting and the wearing of blue denim. Clear parameters were also put in place to protect BCC traditions and the member experience.
The Club researched the Electronic Device and Dress Policies of 22 peer clubs which included some of the nation’s top private clubs. We also observed our BCC members and how they adapted to the less restrictive policies. After reviewing this research, the Board of Governors has decided to make these changes permanent. ◆
As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 crisis, one thing remains abundantly clear, the Club must adapt to meet the growing and changing needs of our membership. We recognize that with such a broad and diverse membership, any change to these policies will not appeal to everyone.
ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY UPDATES • All usage of Electronic Devices must be brief, discreet, and respectful and not impede the enjoyment of the Club by other members • Non-verbal usage only. No active phone calls EXCEPT in personal vehicles, locker rooms, or bathrooms • Texting is permitted throughout the entire Club • When not in use, your Electronic Device must not be visible
GUIDE TO WEARING DENIM AT BCC • Neatly tailored blue denim jeans with finished hems are acceptable for gentlemen and women at both clubhouses. Denim must have no rips, tears or frays; nor should it be worn, faded, or similar in styling to “acid washed" • It is recommended that gentlemen wearing denim also wear a blazer or sport coat • Denim dresses, denim skirts, denim shorts, denim jackets are not permitted • Denim is not permitted while participating in any sport or during holiday events unless expressly stated 3

FITNESS & WELLNESS
WELCOME JENNA SCOTT TO OUR TEAM! Jenna's passion for fitness started as a high school athlete competing in track and field and field hockey. She then went on to complete her Bachelors of Science at Stevenson University. While at Stevenson, she competed at a national level in fitness competitions. Jenna fell in love with heavy lifting and strength training during this time and then went on to complete her Personal Training Certification (NASM) so she could share her love of lifting with others, in hopes of inspiring them to become their strongest version of themselves. A few years later, Jenna dove into her 200-hour Vinyasa Teacher Training Certification to have a better understanding of the mind body connection. This led Jenna to help people on both a physical and emotional level. Throughout her lifting and yoga journey, Jenna trained herself and competed each year in the Baltimore Running Festival half marathon where she placed in the top 10 percent for her age group. Volunteering holds a special place in Jenna's heart. she runs the half marathon on behalf of Pacing 4 Parkinson’s where she has committed countless hours as an active committee member. The committee’s fundraising efforts are donated to the Johns Hopkins movement and disorder clinic.
I am on a continuous self-journey to find strength and grounding by embracing a connection with nature and the outdoors, physical exertion and movement, internal listening and breathwork, and community. I look forward to sharing my journey at Baltimore Country Club, helping our members to navigate through their journey in becoming the strongest mental and physical version of themselves.
Bouldering became Jenna's newest addition to her fitness passions. Bouldering combines all of Jenna's favorite fitness areas into one unique sport with endless areas of growth. Jenna is a strong advocate that healthy foods are essential for fulfilling a healthy lifestyle. Jenna believes that health and fitness is a lifestyle choice and commitment. Jenna looks at health and fitness as a holistic approach and helps her yogis and clients to become their strongest versions of themselves both physically and mentally. Jenna is available for Personal Training at Roland Park, and she looks forward to offering yoga, running, and outdoor fitness programs for our membership. ◆

FITNESS & WELLNESS
BEATING THE
COVID-19 Blues
TIPS FROM YOUR FITNESS & WELLNESS TEAM 1. Tap into the power of gratitude: The simple act of being grateful can boost your mental health. At the end of each day, write down five things you are grateful for from the day. Keep them to yourself or share them with family or friends. 2. Disconnect from technology: Use for work and contact with loved ones only. 3. Take a hike and connect with nature: Feel the fresh air on your face, use your other senses. Patapsco Valley State Park, Gunpowder Falls State Park, Rocks State Park, and Great Falls National Park are just a few the beautiful parks that have great hiking trails. 4. Sleep: Get a good night’s rest and rejuvenate for tomorrow. 5. Do things you love to do: Read a book, paint, workout, cook, or watch a movie or concert. 6. Dance and sing: Turn on your favorite tunes and get your endorphins moving 7. Keep with a routine: Create a sense of normalcy and be productive. 8. Be of service from a distance: Support fundraisers, declutter and donate to a charity, support local businesses online.
9. Create events with your family: Dinner dates, game nights, baking days, movie night, start new traditions. 10. Set goals for next year: Think ahead and stay positive, plan a fun trip for when the worst is over!

GOLF
TIPS FROM THE PRO By Katie Mid Fulton, Assistant Golf Professional With rounds of golf up 20% nationally in July, there is no doubt that a good portion of that percentage are rounds played by new golfers. If you aren’t part of that group and wanted to be but intimidation keeps you from jumping on the bandwagon, these tips are for you. You don’t even need clubs to start, all you need is the desire to learn.
How to start playing golf: 1. Understand that this won’t happen overnight. Although there are the unicorns of the golf world that seem to be naturals, most will take some time and good effort to put a solid swing together. 2. Reach out to one of your Golf Professionals for lessons. Although just hitting the range or course with your golf buddies can be fun, the lack of basic fundamentals in set-up and swing can not only cause bad habits that are difficult to overcome, but can put you at risk of injury. Getting a non-golf friend to join the lesson with you is always an option and can make it less intimidating. Before your lesson begins, let your Professional know of any injuries or physical limitations that you may have. If you know your learning style (visual, aural, physical, logical, social, or solitary), share that with your Professional as well. This helps us navigate your lesson in a way that you are best to understand. 3. Bring a notebook to your lesson to take notes. Word your notes in a way that makes the most sense to you. This ties back into your learning style and in doing so, makes your practice time much easier. 4. Dedicate yourself to a practice routine laid out by your Golf Professional. Be honest about the time that you have and are willing to spend working on your game. If you are going through this with a friend, it helps to schedule times that the two of you can come together to make each other accountable and again, lessen the intimidation of being out at the Practice Facilities. If you are not a golf member, you can use the Practice Facilities with a Practice Facility pass for the season. Let your Professional know and they will be happy to assist you. 10
October 2020
5. Take breaks during your practice routines. If things aren’t going well and your mind suddenly gets boggled down with swing thoughts, your muscles will tighten up which can through a proper practice routine out the window. Drink some water, focus on the basic fundamentals, and swing with ease. 6. Take a playing lesson before hitting the course. Knowing simple course management skills and proper etiquette will make golf much more enjoyable. For beginner ladies, you can join the Reluctant Ladies group to get a glimpse into these things. Contact me for more information at kmidfulton@bcc1898.com. 7. When you get out on the course, play from the forward tees. There is a stigma that the white tees are for men, the gold are for seniors, and the red are for women, but in order to make the most out of your round, forget the stigma. I always suggest that beginner ladies should start from the green tees and men should start from green or red. Once you get the hang of things, move back a tee. 8. Surround yourself with people that are patient and encouraging. 9. Be patient with yourself and don’t give up. Again, this will take some time, but when it clicks you will have found a love for a lifetime! Note to spouses and friends of new golfers: Invite, invite, invite! I can’t stress enough how important it is to invite your curious new-to-golf friends to the range with you. Letting them see what a practice routine looks like and having your encouragement will help them tremendously. Be patient with them and don’t try to be the teacher. ◆
GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE By Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper
With record setting temperatures this summer, it was too hot and the grass too weak for extensive golf course aeration during our normal scheduled times. These vital maintenance practices will be completed on greens as follows: • West Course Closed: October 26, 27, 28 for aeration • East Course Closed: November 2, 3, 4 for aeration and dethatching • East & West Course fairways to be core aerated the week of November 30 In addition, we will be seeding perennial ryegrass on our driving range and bermudagrass tees throughout the West course. This is part of a two-grass system strategy that utilizes the warm season grasses in the hot summer months and cool-season grass in the cool months of fall, winter, and spring. Throughout the fall, our team will be seeding and sodding thin/bare areas affected by the stress of this summer throughout the property. In addition, we will be aerating and seeding areas in the roughs that are thin due to high volumes of cart and maintenance traffic throughout the season, including around the clubhouse and grounds. Fall is the best time to repair your lawn following the summer months with cool-season species such as turf type tall fescue. This is due to: • Shorter daylight hours • Cool nights and warm days that are ideal for germination and establishment from seed (60-75 degrees) • Lack of weed and disease pressure • Abundance of natural moisture As a reminder, we can experience frost during October when the nighttime and morning temperatures (coldest part of the day) will be dropping to a point where water freezes inside the plant and forms into very sharp ice crystals. Pressure from foot, vehicular, and animals on rigid frozen turf rupture the cells within the plant and this causes injury or even death of the plant. Delays in morning start times may be necessary due to this weather event. ◆
At the Club, we take great pride in its history and tradition. In 1976, a seedling from the famous Great Wye Oak, once Maryland’s official state tree and the largest White Oak in the United states, was planted on the East Lawn of the Five Farms clubhouse. State forestry officials sold Wye Oak seedlings to the general public as a promotion to “grow a piece of Maryland history.” According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the trees' offspring have been planted in nearly all 50 states and throughout Europe. The Great Wye Oak was located in Talbot County on the Maryland Eastern Shore. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm toppled this great tree on June 6, 2002, at the age of 460 years. ◆
MEET OUR NEW INTERNS Each year, the Club hosts two to three student interns from various universities and countries to provide essential work experience and develop their skills with the goal of becoming a Golf Course Superintendent in the future. In the past, we have hosted international interns from Australia, Germany, Great Britain, and Ireland. As for the U.S, we have hosted interns from Abraham Baldwin (Georgia), Penn State, University of Maryland, Rutgers, and Michigan State University. These interns are housed on-site in the Haviland House. This house is located at the Golf and Grounds Maintenance complex and is named after long-time staff member Terry Haviland who served the Club for nearly 50 years.
