September 2020
I'm 70 and I've been lifting wights as fitness client for 16 years. COVID-19 caused me to rethink my approach to my strength, balance, and flexibility. I have also been trying to find something to do together with my wife that she enjoyed. We started taking Yoga with Rebecca Printen several months via Zoom. We thoroughly enjoy it. Not much can help my golf game, but I know that my back doesn't hurt anymore after I play. - Kevin Carney, Member
My husband and I have LOVED being able to take fitness classes and personal training with Jessica Taylorson on Zoom while the Fitness Center has been closed. And even though it is reopened, we have so enjoyed being able to work out in the comfort and safety of our own home that we plan to continue for the foreseeable future. We have even been able to take classes or train while we are on vacation and even when Jessica’s on vacation! Thanks to Janine and Jessica for making this possible! - Linda Huganir & Lee Coplan, Members
I have been working out with Janine since the gym reopened as part of Phase 2. Working out with Janine is always a lot of fun! We work on golf related exercises and stretches that will translate over to the course. Getting back into a regular training program during COVID-19 has been beneficial for a lot of reason, however, knowing my safety is put first has made me comfortable and glad I can be back working out in the gym. Everything piece of equipment I touch is cleaned by Janine, as well as her wearing a face mask and gloves. Love being back, thanks Janine! - Greg Johnston, Member
GOLF
TIPS from the Pros The Secret to More Distance
By Nick Cannon, Head Golf Professional During this pandemic, we have not only experienced record number of rounds but an increase in demand for instruction. With golf being one of the few limited activities, members are spending plenty of time trying to improve their golf games. One of the most common requests I get during a lesson is to assist a player in hitting the ball further throughout their entire bag. The following tip will provide you with a simple thought when trying to work on increasing distance in your game: The downswing is started by the lower body and how we use it will largely determine how far we hit the ball. Many amateur golfers typically leave so much distance on the table by not allowing the pelvis to first slide and then rotate toward the target. The move we want to make is very similar to a powerlifter’s squat.
In the photo above, the inflatable ball stays between the thighs as we swing to the top. We should sense our glute and core muscles working as our lower body stays stable to the ground. As we begin the downswing, we start to feel like we are pushing into the ground causing the inflatable ball to drop. This allows our pelvis to rotate forward and enables us to use the ground to generate more clubhead speed. A high percentage of golfers try to generate more clubhead speed by swaying off the ball which ultimately causes us to be less stable and lose distance. I guarantee if you can incorporate the powerlifter’s squat theory into your swing you will see a dramatic change in added distance in your game. ◆
Navigating the Rough By Joanna Coe, PGA Assistant Director of Instruction Sure, we would all love to stripe tee shots right down the center of the fairway on every Par 4 or 5, but even on our best ball striking days, we will most likely face several shots from the rough. We are all aware of how thick and difficult the rough can get at Five Farms! In order to successfully escape those thick lies out of the rough, we must assess the lie, change our setup, and swing with a steep angle of attack. ◆ ASSESS THE LIE • If the golf ball is sitting in the first cut of rough or more on top of the blades of grass, congratulations! You have a "good" lie. You have the ability to select a variety of clubs depending on the yardage. The ball will come out with less spin so keep that in mind with rollout • If your golf ball is surrounded by grass, buried, or in fescue, you have a "bad" lie. Your club selection is limited. Grab that high lofted club and plan on conservatively getting your ball back in play. It is hard to predict the outcome out of thick rough, but plan on the ball coming out with less spin and not much speed
SETUP • Play the ball slightly back in your stance • Position your body weight a bit more towards your lead foot. Make sure you don’t just slide your hips forward. Make sure the buttons of your shirt are pointing down just in front of the ball. • Keep a firm grip on the club
SWING • The goal of the setup and the swing is to steepen your angle of attack. This will limit the amount of interaction your club has with the grass resulting in a stronger shot. A shallow attack angle may result in tops, chunks, or even whiffs • Keep your weight on your lead foot throughout the swing • Increase your wrist hinge during the takeaway to get the clubhead up and on a steeper plane • Abbreviate your follow through. This will help you control the clubface

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE By Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper at their absolute weakest point when activity at the Club remains especially high. With favorable weather, the 007 bentgrass will regenerate new roots, but as you can see by the photo they are currently rather shallow 1/8-1/4˝.
Traditionally, July is the hottest month of the year and 2020 was no exception. In fact, records were broken with 6,934 rounds of golf combined with a weather record for the most 90+ degree days in any month in the Baltimore area, beating out July 2011 by a day with 25 days (records dating back to 1872). Unfortunately, weather in the form of excessive moisture, high heat, and damage from untimely thunderstorms has placed additional stress on the playing areas. The combination of high soil temperatures with saturated soils resulted in rapid loss of turf roots and damage to bentgrass on selected areas on both courses. In August, moisture and temperatures were slightly above normal. Under the current weather conditions, there are little to no rooting structure and under bright sunny days, the plant goes under moisture stress and begins to wilt or turn blue or yellow. The only way to keep the plant from dying is to apply light amounts of water multiple times per day, either by staff with a hose or by turning on sprinklers. It’s very discouraging to have to apply water to an already saturated and wet soil, regardless of how light, but it’s necessary in order for the grass to survive. Unfortunately, the playing surfaces are 10
September 2020
With days getting shorter, we hope for cooler nights and warm days to hasten recovery to allow the rooting structure to recover. Spots on certain fairways will be reseeded or sodded. Where necessary, carts have been restricted from the fairways to allow the seed to germinate and establish. With little to no rooting structure we need your help. When operating a golf cart, please use caution applying brakes and making sharp turns on the fairways. Damage will occur as shown by the photo above. Good news—each of the bermudagrass tees that were installed last year on the Driving Range and West Course are in tremendous condition. The tees on the course show little to no signs of divoting or traffic stress compared to the bentgrass tees on the courses. Bermudagrass is a warm season grass that performs best in the hottest and most humid environments, which correlates with our busiest time of year for play. Take a look, the results are undeniable! ◆

GROW the GAME: Grant Carey By Alexandra Craft, Director of Membership & Communications
“No matter what endeavor Grant chooses in life, he is someone you can truly root for,” said BCC Assistant Director of Instruction Joanna Coe. Being part of a team and being a good teammate are part of what inspired Grant Carey to join the golf team in high school. Growing up playing a variety of sports, Grant says he always gravitated towards golf. “It’s physical, but it doesn’t involve super-athleticism,” he explained. Grant competed as a varsity golfer at Gilman School where he was regarded as a top competitor in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), and finished top 10 in the league championships in 2019.
12
September 2020
In the MIAA, competitors play in foursomes and work closely with their teammate to read the greens and give advice about each hole. “When you have a teammate there, and you’re both working towards a common goal, it’s nice to have the camaraderie where you want to succeed with one another. It’s something you don’t get in golf too often,” said Grant. The feeling of playing for more than just himself really drove Grant to be successful on his varsity team. He believes a lot of the good that comes from playing sports is focused around teamwork and working towards team success rather than simply winning as an individual. The long bus rides to and from matches, talking about the course before a match, comparing notes about specific holes at the end of the day, and remembering specific shots that he and his teammates hit are among his favorite memories playing for Gilman. The camaraderie of sharing a singular purpose with a small group of players was an incredible bonding experience; “...these memories [will] stick with me...”
The principles of golf also ring true to Grant’s character. His coach at Gilman always emphasized to “win with class, lose with class,” and that’s the motto Grant has applied throughout his high school golf career, and carried over into his life philosophy.
Win with class, lose with class. A recent Gilman graduate, Grant remembers how his early successes with the golf team inspired him and sparked his passion for the game. Grant’s sophomore year he was teamed up with a senior in a match against Mt. Saint Joe High School. In a Better Ball format the pair made eight birdies through 12 holes together. “He was playing really well, I was playing really well, so we fed off each other. When you’re watching someone else having one of their best days it makes you feel like you want to have your best day,” said Grant. When asked about his most successful round of golf, Grant proudly shares “I shot four under [par] a couple of weeks ago...”. There aren’t many golfers that have even shot par on a golf course yet Grant, who was born with physical challenges that have amounted to several surgeries on his hip and a permanent physical disability, does not let anything slow him down. “I don’t know anything different, I’ve had this my whole life. I can’t balance on my left leg, so it’s been a difference in my golf game,” explained Grant. In a sport where so much of your power comes from the shifting of weight from the back to front foot as

...how well you play on your bad days is what will define you on the course. has incredible touch around the greens. He creates his power from his strong arms, core, and shoulders. It’s absolutely amazing to watch him hit a golf ball,” said Coe enthusiastically. He has worked tirelessly to connect his mind with his body to get to a point where he is now able to perform at the highest level. When discussing the future and opportunities for individuals with physical challenges Grant is hopeful for the moments golf will create for people like him. “I know the paralympics are becoming bigger and bigger, and they’re adding more sports. I definitely think that will help golfers like me compete at a really high level.” shared Grant.
Grant and his Gilman teammates.
you follow through, Grant has worked to adapt his game to gain control and channel his power. Grant hasn’t allowed his physical challenges to hold him back from achieving athletic success and is known for his determination, grace under pressure, and unparalleled sportsmanship. It’s clear that Grant’s team at Gilman regarded him as an incredible asset as well. In his senior year, his coaches and teammates made him the male nominee for the Gilman Unsung Hero Award, and from there he was selected as the male winner of the McCormick Unsung Hero Award. This honor is given to recognize athletes for unselfish team play and to highlight the efforts of those who contribute to the success of their teams without acclaim. Out of 114 athletes from a variety of sports nominated from Baltimore Area Schools, Grant was selected to receive the Grand Prize scholarship.
“The good thing about golf is that it’s a sport where even if you’re not competing against people, you’re still always trying to get better and you can play for your entire life” said Grant. Golf has taught Grant patience and positivity. “You’re always going to have bad holes and you’re always going to play [poorly] sometimes,” said Grant. But he cites the importance of not letting one bad hole or one bad game keep you down. “One of the keys is just trying to move on and focus on the positives and focus on the future;” a mentality that Grant says has helped him not only with his golf game, but with life. Consistency on the course has been key for Grant, who emphasizes how well you play on your bad days is what will define you on the course. Today, Grant can be seen around BCC practicing for countless hours, honing his skills individually, and playing friendly matches with fellow members. He also works closely with his Swing Coach, “Grant is explosive off the tee and
It’s absolutely amazing to watch him hit a golf ball. He will be attending Villanova in the fall with plans to play on the club team as a freshman and hopes his play will earn him a spot on varsity team as a sophomore. With a bright future ahead, Grant’s fans and supporters have no doubt he’ll achieve great things. In the words of Joanna Coe: “Grant is a fine young man who embodies all the important qualities you learn on the golf course.” ◆
