THE END OF RICKY H
ATTON

So the fairytale didn’t happen after all. It simply wasn’t meant to be that Ricky Hatton after a 3 and a half year absence would return to the ring as if he had never been gone. At the age of 34, time finally caught up with him in Manchester on the night of Saturday November 24th, 2012. the fight with 8 seconds left on the clock.
Facing a tough fighter and former WBA world champion, Vyacheslav Senchenko was (in hindsight) probably not the best way to ease yourself back into the scene. Senchenko had only lost once in his previous 33 fights before this night and that statistic proved to be telling. Hatton started off brightly and brought the fight to Senchenko and connected with a left then right hook in the first round. In the first 5 all action rounds Hatton had edged it, but slowly through each of these rounds, Senchenko landed power shots to Hatton. In the fourth, Hatton got caught by an especially hard one and that punch took a lot out of him. He was exhausted after that. By the eighth round Hatton began to slow down and his punch resistance had gone.
Though he always fights with passion and courage and was still leading on points by the ninth, Hatton was then floored by a crunching left to the body, which took all the wind out of Hattons sails. Though the 20,000 strong crowd willed and bayed for Hatton to rise once more, Hatton was spent. Seeing his agony, the ref stopped
Commenting on the knock down, Hatton said ‘I thought I was maybe four rounds up but there were clear signs of ring rust. I hurt him a few times and I was winning. It was a good shot, I should have realised he was looking for that. I suppose that is what three and a half years out of the ring does.’
And that was the end of Ricky, straight after the fight he announced his final retirement saying ‘I needed one more fight to see if I had still got it - and I haven’t. I found out tonight it isn’t there no more. I can look at myself in the mirror and tell myself I did my best, but there is always an excuse to find. I got in the best shape I possibly could but if I hadn’t been hit with that body shot I would have just scraped over the line with a points win and I honestly think I would still be telling you all the same thing. A fighter knows and I know it isn’t there any more. I got the opportunity and I got the answers and, no matter how upsetting it is, I have got to be a man and say it is the end of Ricky Hatton.’
Bruised and battered admitted that ‘I am heartbroken. I am so sorry for my fans. I am not a quitter, I keep trying but it did not come off’.
What his fate will be is up to him. He returned after fighting his own personal demons and wanting to prove them and his critics wrong. Before the fight he said that if he lost he would then put all his energies into being a trainer and promoter and now that he has seen that he no longer has that killer edge for boxing, I think he’ll find some peace in that. The fight against Senchenko finally put to rest any doubt of ‘what could have been’ and he can now get on with his new opportunities.
He leaves the ring with the record of being a former WBA (Super), IBF, IBO and The Ring Light Welterweight Champion and WBA welterweight Champion.
