BRITISH BOXING 201

3

2013 brings a feast of boxing and because there are no major sporting events (apart from the ashes), the worlds media turns their eyes on what’s available and boxing is one of the prime sports that can take the limelight. Most of us know about British boxers like Amir Khan and Carl Froch but this is a rich time for other up and coming British boxers who will soon become household names themselves. This is not even to mention fresh out of the jungle, Heavyweight David Haye who hopes to meet Klitschko at some point in the year.

regarded as the best ‘pound for pound’ fighter in the world. Martinez is current WBC, middleweight champ and the fight is on Martinez’s home ground. This fight is seen as a formality for the Argentinian by the world press but Murray will want to prove the world wrong. He has a tough job though. First the big guns and Amir Khan is probably the most recognised as he has won the World Light Welterweight Champion title twice and only lost it to a decidedly dodgy decision against Lamont Peterson in 2011. He went on then to lose against Danny Garcia and at that time, Khan’s career was on the ropes. But Khan was back to winning ways in December after beating Carlos Molina and so he fights again in April possibly against Josesito Lopez. If Khan wins that one he can have a rematch with Danny Garcia who knocked Khan out last year.

Carl Froch in the Super middleweight is now 3 times world Champion and is due a possible rematch against Mikkel Kessler for a title unification bout in late May or Early June. There is talk then of another rematch against Andre Ward, who is the only other man to beat Froch.

All in all, it’s an interesting time for British boxing and by the end of 2013 we might be dominant in quite a few categories. All of which can only spread the word about a sport that has waned in popularity in the last years. 2013 has every chance of bringing that popularity back.

On February 23rd, British heavyweight, David Price (named Prospect of the Year by US television) will fight Tony Thomson from the U.S. If Price wins that one he has every chance to fight the younger of the Klitschko brothers, Wladimir, for the World title. Also in the middleweight class, Matthew Macklin hopes to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who lost recently to Martinez in April though dates have not been confirmed. Middleweight Lee Markham also boxes in April but his opponent is to be announced. Fellow Brit Tyson Fury is also likely to eventually meet with one of the Klitschko’s and Fury is hoping to fight for the first time on US soil on March 16th. Once he puts a few wins under his belt he has every chance of going for a world title and once that is achieved a match up with fellow Brit David Price will be a guarantee. On March 16th, Welshman, Nathan Cleverly, defends his WBO lightheavyweight title against Robin Krasniqi. Cleverly wants to meet Bernard Hopkins but veteran Hopkins is about to retire after one more fight so Cleverly may never get that chance. Light heavyweight Tony Bellew aka ‘The Bomber’ will fight Isaac Chilemba on March 30th in Liverpool. In the Middleweight class, Englishman Martin Murray, fights for a world title on April 27th against Sergio Martinez in Argentina. Marbella based Matthew Macklin lost last year to Martinez who is

In the Lightweight category, up and coming boxer Welshman Gavin Rees (1 loss) fights on February 16th against the American, Adrien Broner aka ‘The Problem’ in Atlantic City. Broner is undefeated so far but if Rees pulls it off then it will be seen as a major coup for the young Welshman. Scotland’s Ricky Burns, the WBO lightweight holder has been offered a fight against Broner on May 4th on the same night that Floyd Mayweather Jr makes his come back against Robert Guerrero. Kell Brook, aka Special K, fights IBF Welterweight world champion Devon Alexander in Detroit on February 23. This is a tough fight for Brook as Alexander is the better boxer but then Brook has the strength and stamina to win, so this fight could go to the wire. In the Super-bantamweight class, Brits Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg have world title bids this year.
