RACE TOP to the

Round 17: New Delhi

Round 17 of the championship was at the Buddh International Circuit, the second time that the New Delhi area of India had seen Formula 1 action. Qualifying saw a 3rd consecutive front row lock out by the Red Bull Racing team, with Sebastian Vettel getting pole ahead of Mark Webber. Behind them were the 2 McLaren’s of Hamilton and Button, with the 2 Ferrari’s of Alonso and Massa lining up on the 3rd row. Behind them were Raikkonen, Perez, Maldonado, Rosberg, Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Senna and Schumacher. The starting grid was the first for many races not to be affected by penalties to any of the drivers. Alonso’s qualification was punctuated with his statement that, “We are not fighting Seb, we are fighting Newey” (a nod to the talents of the chief designer and engineer at Red Bull, Adrian Newey, and at the same time a nudge to his Ferrari colleagues!) At the start of the race, Vettel got away cleanly from Webber. Behind them, 3 world champions diced for positions, as Button managed to get a better start over Hamilton, with Alonso in close pursuit. Hamilton was trying to out drag his team-mate away from turn 3 on the long straight down to turn 4, when the fast charging Alonso was able to make the most of the vacuum created by the 2 McLarens to sweep along the pair of them so that all 3 cars practically arrived at turn 4 together. Alonso just did enough to keep himself in between the 2 Mclarens by turn 5, and so had Button ahead of him with Hamilton behind. With the speeds they were reaching on that long straight, it was thrilling stuff to watch, and one of Alonso’s moves of the season. With his championship rival out in front, Fernando knew he needed to do some more overtaking in this race to keep the pressure on Vettel.

Meanwhile it was Michael Schumacher’s turn to experience first corner woes, when the front wing from the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne managed to clip the right rear tyre of Michael’s Mercedes, causing a puncture which put him to the back of the field with an unscheduled pit-stop. By lap 11 he was being lapped by Vettel. A similar fate would also befall Sergio Perez, when after his first pit stop, in an attempt to pass the Toro Rosso of Ricciardo, he too managed to get a puncture to the right rear. On lap 22, the damage sustained by the puncture would force the Sauber team to retire Perez’s car. As some things always seem to happen in threes, Maldonado would also suffer the exact same tyre issue later in the race when he was dicing in his Williams with the Sauber of Kobayashi at turn 5.

The majority of the field used the soft tyre on the first stint. This was not to Jenson Button’s liking, and he could not put up any defence when Alonso could use his DRS on lap 4 to cruise by the McLaren driver down the same back straight where they were both fighting a few laps earlier. Alonso was now in a podium position at least, but still much of the race to go. Hamilton was also able to pull off a similar move on his team-mate on lap 6 – Jenson was now down to 5th in the race. Jenson was also the first of the front runners to come in to the pits to change tyres on lap 26, where further time was eventually lost

as he was stuck behind the Lotus of Grosjean who was already on a long stint on the harder tyre.

Pirelli were conservative with their approach to tyres for the Indian race, which allowed the whole field the opportunity to need just one pit stop for the obligatory change of tyre compound. It also meant the tyres were not degrading as they would at other venues. This helped Fernando Alonso immensely, as it allowed the Spaniard to race his Ferrari at almost full pelt for the duration of the race. The other element that helped him to catch and race Mark Webber was that Mark was having all sorts of problems with his KERS energy boost system. Webber eventually lost his KERS completely with a third of the race remaining, which allowed Alonso to make a DRS move at the very end of the long back straight into turn 4. This was a vital damage limitation move by Alonso in terms of the championship, as although he could do nothing about Vettel, who went on to win his 4th consecutive win of the season, he could at least minimise the points gap with Vettel, which was now 13 (Vettel on 240, Alonso 227).

Lewis Hamilton found the running on the harder tyres easier than the softs, but his charge to try and catch Mark Webber came to no avail, and so he finished 4th. There were gear selection issues along the way for Lewis caused by a fault on his steering wheel. This meant the McLaren team had to negotiate a tricky 5-wheel change at the pit stop, which they managed to do in 3.3 seconds!

Jenson Button claimed he enjoyed nothing except the opening lap and the last lap, to come home 5th. On the last lap, Jenson managed to post the fastest lap time of the race – the 150th time McLaren have managed this feat! Massa had the measure on Raikkonen throughout the race to finish 6th and 7th respectively. The only time Kimi managed to get his Lotus past the Ferrari was just after Massa’s pit stop, when the Lotus was ahead for literally a few corners. Massa and Kimi both braked at the DRS detection line together, but crucially for Felipe, his Ferrari was behind at that point, meaning a DRS pass could take place on the straight, keeping the Ferrari ahead for the rest of the race. Hulkenberg, Grosjean and Senna made up the rest of the top ten. Rosberg came in 10th, Paul Di Resta 12th with the struggling Schumacher down in 22nd.

Round 18: F1 Feast in the Middle East! Controversy came on the Saturday of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend when Sebastian Vettel was excluded from qualification by virtue of the fact that his Red Bull did not have the mandatory level of fuel left in the car’s collection pot at the end of the session. Each car has to have at least a litre of fuel left in this pot at the end of qualifying – in Vettel’s car there was just 850ml. It was evident there was an issue, as the Renault engine engineers had given Red Bull the instruction for Sebastian to pullover and stop the car on the way back to the pits after his last fast lap in Q3, which was a call to make sure no damage was caused to the engine due to this lack of fuel. This exclusion meant that his 3rd place on the grid was no longer valid and Vettel would have to start at the back of the grid – the same punishment Lewis Hamilton endured for the same crime in Barcelona. As it was, Red Bull decided to start Sebastian from the Pit Lane as this meant subtle changes could now be made to the car’s wings and gear ratios which would enhance overtaking in the race, which was a must if Vettel was to make anything of the race on the Sunday.

The grid lined up with Hamilton in pole and Webber alongside. Behind them were Maldonado, Raikkonen, Button, Alonso, Rosberg, Massa,

Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Perez, Di Resta, Schumacher and Senna. At the start, this time Hamilton got away well and it was Webber that appeared to get bogged down. This allowed Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus into 2nd and Pastor Maldonado into 3rd. Further behind, there was contact between Romain Grosjean and Nico Rosberg, meaning both had to pit for damage repairs. Paul Di Resta also came to blows with his teammate, which forced Nico Hulkenberg to collide with the Williams of Bruno Senna. Paul suffered a puncture while the damage sustained to Hulkenberg’s car was a terminal suspension blow. At turns 3 and 4, Jenson Button got bunched up behind Mark Webber, which in turn allowed Fernando Alonso to pass the McLaren driver. It also allowed Fernando to launch an attack on the Red Bull of Webber, and Alonso completed a move on Webber by the end of the lap – Fernando was now up to 4th. The delay Vettel had by starting the race from the pit lane did not hamper him too much. By the end of the first lap he was up to 20th and behind the recovering Bruno Senna. An attempted move by the German on the Brazilian cost Vettel a chunk of his front wing when he hit the rear of Senna’s Williams. It wasn’t too costly for Vettel, as by lap 6, he had managed to get his car up to 14th place through a series of overtaking moves on the likes of the HRT, Caterham and Marussia drivers, and Vergne in the Toro Rosso. Apart from a slight moment on lap 2 where Lewis had a wheel lock, which allowed Kimi to cruise right up behind him, things were going fairly smoothly for Hamilton. Everyone’s attention was grabbed on lap 9 when the recovering Mercedes of Rosberg hit the very slow and failing car of Narain Karthikeyan, forcing the Mercedes car to fly directly and dramatically over the cockpit of the HRT, resulting in a safety car period to make sure the wreckage was removed. Both drivers were unhurt in what could have been a very nasty shunt.

In the safety car period, Vettel got caught out when he was trying to warm his tyres up, whilst in front of him, Daniel Ricciardo was trying to warm his brakes up. Vettel had to swerve to avoid collision, and instead his front wing collected the polystyrene DRS activation sign, causing parts of his front wing to flail around. This meant he would now need to stop for a new front nose section. The resulting pit stop meant Vettel was now at the back 76

of the field, which wasn’t too much of a drama as the cars were all bunched together behind the safety car. When racing resumed on lap 15, Hamilton and Raikkonen both made good starts, but Maldonado was relatively slow – it turned out his car had lost KERS during the laps under the safety car. Alonso eventually got past the Venezuelan, and Maldonado was soon under pressure from Webber and Button. Meanwhile up the road, disaster hits Hamilton when his car suddenly dies on lap 20. An electrical failure causes the fuel pump to stop working, and for the 2nd time this season, Hamilton loses a dominating lead due to a lack of reliability from his McLaren. Kimi takes over the lead – an opportunity which the Finn relishes.

Lap 23, Vettel is back up to 11th place and making good ground again. Webber however makes a meal of trying to pass Maldonado at Turn 11, and Pastor is left with nowhere to go and puts Webber into a spin. This allows Button, Massa and Perez through. Button also made short work of getting by Maldonado in the following lap. Perez then proceeded to make a move on Massa, which allowed Webber onto the back of Massa. Webber and Massa go wheel to wheel, Webber takes avoiding action at the corner to keep his car going forward at the run of area. Massa sees Webber about to re-join the track at turn 12 and somehow manages to accelerate too hard and puts his Ferrari into a spin – ruining his tyres in the process. Massa pits shortly afterwards. At this point in the race, Vettel passes Schumacher and Kobayashi ahead of him pits, allowing Vettel into 8th position and closing in on his team-mate! It would appear that anything could be possible for Vettel at this stage. In what might have been a little early for an optimum time for a pit stop, Red Bull sensibly brought Webber in for his one pit stop, which meant Vettel did not have to make the slightly awkward pass on his team-mate on the track. Great for Sebastian, but for Mark, he landed in traffic behind Perez (who had also pitted in front of him) with Senna, Vergne, Grosjean and Di Resta battling together on old tyres. With Alonso, Button and Maldonado all pitting on laps 29 and 30, Raikkonen pits on lap 32 and comes out in the lead with none other than Vettel being in 2nd place due to his earlier pit-stop being out of kilter to everyone else. However, having stopped a lot earlier for the soft tyre, people were beginning to wonder whether Vettel could make his tyres last for the rest of the race.

Senna pits from 5th to leave a train of cars lead by Grosjean on lap 35 that contains Di Resta, Perez and Webber – the latter 2 being frustrated with the pace of the leading pair. On lap 38, to be on the safe side, Red Bull decide to bring in Vettel for a second pit stop. Vettel doesn’t lose out too much as the only cars ahead of him on the track by now are Raikkonen, Alonso and Button. After his pit stop, Maldonado too was gaining on the battle for 5th behind Webber and the Grosjean train. Di Resta uses the DRS to make a move on Grosjean. Perez thought he could follow through trying to pass them both, but forces Di Resta wide at one side of the corner and Perez himself spins wide at the other side of turn 14, comes back on the track and hits Grosjean, which in turn causes a blockage in the track that Webber can’t avoid, resulting in terminal damage to both Grosjean and Webber’s cars. Perez is able to continue, but the race stewards find Perez at fault for ‘Causing a collision and forcing another driver off the track’ and so lands a stop-and-go penalty in the pits. The resultant carnage brings out the safety car for a second time allowing a 24 second gap between the leader and Vettel’s 4th placed car to be extinguished, giving the Red Bull team much hope that more could be gained in the race for their championship protagonist. Under the safety car, over the team radio, Kimi Raikkonen was given instructions to warm up his tyres and brakes. Rather amusingly to some, Kimi replied with, “Yes, yes, yes, I know what I’m doing” – this was after earlier in the race, telling the race engineers to “leave me alone”!! When the race re-started, as if to prove a point, Kimi put in the fastest lap of the race so far, and created a safe gap between himself and Alonso. Michael Schumacher, who was continuing with his spell of bad luck, had collected a puncture from running over debris after the PerezGrosjean-Webber collision, and was now running in 12th. Vettel, with good luck on his side, continued to do battle with Button, and with 3 laps remaining, eventually

managed a move up the outside of the McLaren on turn 11, putting him in a podium position, which was where he finished, behind Raikkonen and Alonso. Button finished 4th followed by Maldonado (his first points finish since his Barcelona win!), Kobayashi, Massa, Senna, Di Resta and Ricciardo. Schumacher finished 11th, making it the fourth consecutive race Mercedes have not scored points.

Round 19: Austin, Texas

Alonso was slightly disappointed that he had to share the podium with Vettel, as he knew the points advantage could have been so much more had Vettel struggled to gain places in the race. As it is, Vettel has a 10 point advantage going into the last 2 races of the season.

Circuit of the Americas Part of the focus of the last race was seeing how far up a certain championship contender would be for the inaugural race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Spectators got the chance to see 2 drivers who were out of position (through no fault of their own) make the best of a bad situation – albeit not to the same extreme as Vettel in Abu Dhabi!

For Kimi, it was a welcome return to the top step of the podium – his first win since Belgium in 2009 when he was driving for Ferrari. Raikkonen also becomes the 8th different race winner for the 2012 season. For Lotus, it was also a remarkable win, as they became the 6th different constructor to win a race this season.

It was the first time in Formula 1 that a winner had a car with the Lotus name since Ayrton Senna won the Detroit GP in 1987! Will we see another Lotus win in America in the next race? More to the point, could we see Red Bull take their constructors championship at the next race? More pertinently, can Sebastian Vettel take a third championship title in succession, at the new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas next time out?

First of all Jenson Button experienced a throttle fault with his McLaren in Q2 that meant he had to start 12th on the grid. For Felipe Massa on the other hand, he managed to get a qualifying time that would have put him 6th on the grid (after Grosjean’s gearbox penalty would put Romain down from 4th to 9th on the grid). However, Massa’s team had other ideas. Due to the track having a completely new surface, and being the first race at the Circuit of the Americas, it was perceived that there was a dirty side of the grid and clean side of the grid. The clean side was the normal racing line that followed the odd numbered grid slots. Whereas the even numbered grid slots were the ‘dirty’ line, which could potentially cause a slow start in the race. Ferrari even tested this theory out with a practice start at the end of one of the practice sessions with Massa – his very sluggish getaway was akin to a wet-race start! After qualifying, as things stood, Alonso would be starting 8th and Massa 6th. On the Sunday of the race, people were astonished to discover that Ferrari had taken the decision to break a seal on Massa’s gearbox, which meant that according to the rules, Massa had to receive a 5-place grid penalty. This was the first time

that a team had changed a car in such a way to improve the strategy for their other car, as not only did this mean Massa would start from 11th (on the clean side of the grid), it also meant that Alonso also benefitted from this, as he would now start 7th on the grid – again, the clean side. Therefore, the grid eventually lined up as follows: Vettel took pole position, behind were Hamilton, Webber, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Grosjean, Maldonado, Senna, Massa and Button. At the start, the Ferrari strategy worked a treat. On the wide first corner at the top of the hill leading up from the main straight, Alonso made a great start, took a wide line in and was into 4th place straight away behind Vettel, Webber and Hamilton. For those who started in the even number grid slots, things were not as bad as the teams first feared, although Button did get bogged down in the first corner meaning he was no better than 15th on the first lap. When DRS came online, Hamilton wasted no time in using the device to help him pass Webber into 2nd on the 4th lap. In summary, the race provided much in the way of overtaking, and not just in the DRS zone. At various points during the race, there would be action in turns 1 and 2 where Raikkonen was able to make a stunning move on Hulkenberg, along with Massa making the same move on Raikkonen later in the race. Button’s favoured spot was the sequence of relatively tight turns of 15 and 16, where he made a particularly memorable move down the inside of Grosjean. The overtake that got everyone’s attention though was when, after the first set of pit stops, Hamilton was closing down on Vettel. When both Hamilton and Vettel were on the medium compound tyre, Hamilton could get close to Vettel, but could never get quite close enough to enable a move on the Red Bull driver. Hamilton instead had to wait until his stint on the harder compound tyre. A feature of the new Austin based circuit was the series of fast-flowing-flat-out S-shaped corners between corners 2 and 7 that really only allowed one car width of racing. This was to benefit Hamilton when Vettel approached this section on lap 42, he had to fall in line behind the very much slower car of Narain Karthikeyan. This allowed Hamilton to close right up to the rear of Vettel by the 7th corner, where they both got past the HRT driver who was holding up Vettel in the lead. Hamilton used his DRS to close-up and pass by Vettel on

the back straight. For the top 2 positions, this was how the race finished, and was crucial in terms of how this affected the championship. With Hamilton taking the win, it took 7 points away from Vettel. Lewis was extremely happy that with his 21st career win, 5 years after his first U.S. win in Indianapolis, he had managed to win again for McLaren in his penultimate race for the team.

Other aspects of the race also went in Alonso’s favour. He did not have to pass Webber because on lap 17, the Red Bull driver suffered a problem with his car that had only ever happened on Vettel’s car earlier in the season – the alternator broke down. Also, by lap 48 of the 56 lap race, Alonso had a rear gunner in the form of his flying Brazilian team-mate, who had stormed his way through the field into 4th. It was also crucial that Alonso’s closest rival in the race, Raikkonen, also had a slow pit-stop, which prevented the Lotus driver from making the jump on Alonso during the one-stop race strategy which the majority of the teams took during this race (it was only the Mercedes drivers of Michael Schumacher and Force India’s Paul Di Resta that struggled on 2-stops). This meant a relatively trouble-free run to third for Alonso. The championship points difference between him and Vettel was now back to how it was prior to the Abu Dhabi race weekend – 13 points. With 25 points still up for grabs in the final round in Brazil, the championship would now go down to the wire! Button also made ground during the race to finish 5th. Raikkonen finished 6th, and Grosjean, who had made life difficult for himself earlier on in the race with a spin that ruined his shelf life of his first set of tyres on lap 6, eventually recovered to finish 7th. Behind him were Hulkenberg, Maldonado and Senna. Like Mercedes, the 2 Sauber drivers also found getting the tyres to work extremely difficult, with Perez finishing 11th and Kobayashi 14th.

Round 20: Interlagos, Brazil: Alonso hopes for ‘Chaotic race’! Big questions would be answered in the final round of the Formula 1 World Championship at Autodromo de Interlagos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, with other questions still to ponder. Which team would take 2nd in the Contractors’ championship? Could Marussia keep 10th place? Could McLaren convert their recordbreaking 62nd front row lockout into a one-two at the end of the race? Would this be the last race for the financially struggling HRT team? More importantly, would reliability, driver errors and/or the weather play a part in who becomes the 9th person ever to become triple-world champion between Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso? What we did know is Hamilton would be on pole for his last race with the McLaren team, with his teammate Button alongside him. We also knew that Webber might have to play the team game starting from 3rd position, with Vettel alongside him in 4th. Massa would also potentially play an important role for Ferrari starting 5th, while Hulkenberg and Alonso (starting 6th and 7th respectively) benefitted from Maldonado receiving a 10-place grid penalty as a result of him receiving his 3rd reprimand of the season through not obeying orders for his car to be weighed during the Saturday qualifying procedure – Pastor starts 16th as a result. 8th was Raikkonen, 9th Rosberg and DiResta 10th on the grid. For his final race in Formula 1, Michael Schumacher would be starting a lowly 13th, but made a nice touch when he carried a ‘Thank you’ flag when driving to his grid slot for the last time in his Mercedes, which was, in Michael’s words, “For sharing my passion”. The start of the race would be the key to how things would unfold. The majority of the front runners got away cleanly, however, Vettel

dropped down to 9th place by the time he got round the first bunch of corners. In entry into turn 4, Vettel’s car was punted into a spin by the Williams of Bruno Senna, which then caused further damage to the Red Bull by taking a chunk out of the left rear floor and partly exposing the exhaust system on the Red Bull, leaving the Red Bull facing the wrong way rolling backwards with all the other cars passing by him. It was a disaster as far as Vettel’s championship hopes were concerned. His team were not sure how the damage would affect his car, but did inform Vettel over the team radio that the damage could not be repaired and to carry on – no pit stop would be required.

At the end of the first lap, Massa was making a move on Webber down the main straight, which Alonso used as an opportunity to pass both. Alonso was now up into 3rd place with just the 2 McLaren drivers ahead of him - this podium place is all he would need to become world champion, should things stand as they were. However, from very recent race experience, we know that as long as the car is set up correctly, Vettel can and would make up places – the question would be whether the damage to his car would prevent this? As it turned out, with slippery conditions caused by spitting rain from before the start of the race, Vettel was able to have a go at a number of drivers and was up to 10th by lap 7. This was also helped by a number of drivers falling by the wayside, which included both Williams dropping out. Senna also managed to collide with Perez in the Vettel incident putting the Sauber driver out of the race too, and Grosjean spinning out. Hulkenberg was having his race of the year in these conditions. On lap 3 he was past Webber, and was starting to chase the 2 McLaren drivers. This

was after Alonso went wide at the 4th turn, and did well to get the car back on the track to slot in behind Hulkenberg’s Force India. Hamilton at this stage was also finding conditions tricky to keep himself ahead of his McLaren team-mate, with quite a scrap developing between the 2 Brits. Button was eventually into the lead on lap 8, and on the 9th lap Vettel had now caught up with the Sauber of Kobayashi, and had passed the Japanese driver into 6th position. Things were slowly falling back into place for Vettel’s championship hopes, especially with Alonso still in 4th. On the 11th lap, some drivers and teams viewed the conditions as necessitating the use of the intermediate wet tyre. With one eye on the championship, both Vettel and Alonso played safe, along with Hamilton in deciding to come in for ‘inters’. Hamilton was quickly on the pace, and used his new wet-weather tyres to pass Massa, who was still on slicks. Massa eventually pitted on lap 16, while up ahead, Button and Hulkenberg could still find their way on slicks – albeit Hulkenberg was catching Button and staying with the lead driver for several laps. Vettel too was finding his way on the inters and was now into 5th and catching Alonso. However, it did not take long for the dry line to appear on track, and soon the inters would start to overheat. As Hulkenberg took the lead from Button on lap 19, Hamilton and Alonso took the opportunity to pit again for fresh a fresh set of dry ‘slick’ tyres, with Vettel and Webber following suit a lap later, with Red Bull managing to pit both their drivers in quick succession during a ‘double-shuffle’ manoeuvre. Around lap 21, Alonso was reporting over his team radio that there was too much debris on the track, and there was evidence of an incident near turns 8 and 9, which was possibly what caused Nico Rosberg to receive a puncture. 2 laps after, the safety car was deployed. This extinguished the massive 45-second gap that the 2 lead cars had over the other runners, however both Force India and McLaren used this safety

car as a means of getting both Hulkenberg and Button in for their first pit stops, which both were for new slicks. With evidence of rain at the 4th corner, tyre temperatures were proving to be a problem, especially as drivers were complaining that the safety car was going too slow for them!

issue they were having, the team did not hear Vettel make the request to pit, and had to react quickly when they saw his car coming in – so more time was lost when the team quickly sourced their new set of inters and fitted them! Could this extra pit stop and loss of time cost Vettel the championship?

On lap 29, the safety car was brought in, and Hulkenberg impressed by managing to create a big enough gap between himself and Button to allow himself a comfortable margin for when the racing eventually started again. On lap 31, Button found himself back to dicing with his teammate again, and soon enough Hamilton was back through. Alonso had his own battle to contend with, as Kobayashi was by him into 4th, which he subsequently undone a lap later. Felipe Massa was enjoying the conditions as he was soon past Di Resta (who had spun at turn 11), Vettel and Kobayashi within the space of a few laps, and into 5th place behind his teammate. It turned out that rain was now affecting turns 8, 9, 10 and 11, and other drivers would soon find these corners a handful to negotiate. One of these was Hulkenberg who spun at turn 11 which allowed Hamilton back into the lead. As things stand, this would mean McLaren would be 2nd in the Constructors championship.

Unfortunately for Hulkenberg, he would need to make 2 trips to the pits in quick succession – once for tyres, and then again for a driver through penalty – imposed for causing the collision with Hamilton. Nico Hulkenberg, who once looked certain to take the only Force India podium of the year, was now down to 5th behind Mark Webber. Miraculously, Vettel had only slipped to 7th on lap 60. With Alonso now behind his teammate, as it stood, Vettel would win the championship by 4 points. By this stage, the rain was constant, and some commentators thought that perhaps full wet-weather tyres could be a possibility.

Vettel, who was settled in 7th position, was having dramas of his own. The Red Bull team could not hear what he was saying through his microphone, and so they could not communicate with each other! This would impact on Vettel later in the race, but for the moment on lap 53, Red Bull decided to pit the German – surely inters were the way to go, given Rosberg had been in for them on the previous lap – but no, they had slicks ready for him! Raikkonen meanwhile, had an excursion of his own at turn 11, electing to drive up an escape road, which unfortunately lead to a dead-end! Much time was lost, when he had to double-back on himself to get back onto the corner where he first slid off! Somehow he only slipped back from 10th to 11th behind the recovering DiResta. On lap 55, as the conditions were beginning to affect all areas of the track, Hulkenberg decided to try a move on Hamilton at the end of the main straight. However, when trying to avoid a back-marker which was in his way, Hulkenberg managed to slide his car sideways into the McLaren of Hamilton which had outside of the corner, causing terminal damage in the form of a broken front left suspension arm to the Brit’s car. Hulkenberg was able to continue but this incident allowed Button back into the lead! The track was that slippery now, that really, wet weather tyres were a must. Confusion reigned during the rain when Ferrari were ready for Alonso to make a stop but the driver stayed out unexpectedly for one more lap. The opposite was happening for Red Bull, when Vettel made a late call to come back into the pits for a 4th time to request inters. However, due to the communications 80

Ferrari knew that more points were still on offer for Alonso, and so the team made sure that Massa made way for his championship-fighting teammate on the DRS zone after turn 3 on lap 61. This meant as it stood it was just 1 point separating the 2 championship rivals with 10 laps to go – it was still good enough for Vettel to clinch the title though. Matters were made harder for Ferrari and Alonso, when Michael Schumacher, who had set his car up for a wet race and was running in 6th place, effectively let his countryman through on the run up to turn 8, making the gap in the championship between Vettel and Alonso back up to 3 points. Further down the race positions, Charles Pic was having his best run of the season in the Marussia. If he was to keep that position, Marussia would keep the allimportant 10th place in the Constructors’ championship. However, on lap 66, whilst being lapped by Fernando Alonso, Vitaly Petrov in the Caterham used this an as opportunity to pass Pic, and was able to claim that much sought after 12th place – this would potentially put Caterham in that much prized and financially important 10th place in the championship! On Lap 67, Button had built up a 20 second gap to his nearest rival Alonso. The championship was clearly slipping away from Fernando, with Vettel maintaining 6th. Vettel at this stage was also lapping 1 second a lap faster than everyone else. A concerned pit wall was sensibly trying to tell Vettel on his team radio to ‘keep on the black stuff’! In one last racing manoeuvre of his career, Michael Schumacher had to fend off Kamui Kobayashi, who was fighting for his career - he still does not know if he has a drive in F1 for 2013. Kobayashi made a bold move on Schumacher after turn 4, giving the Mercedes the gentlest of kisses with their tyres briefly meeting together, which forces the Sauber driver wide and allowing Schumacher to maintain 7th place. It was almost a goodbye kiss to the departing 7-times world champion.

One last incident on lap 70 caused the safety car to come out. Paul DiResta managed to lose control of his Force India on the run out of the last corner, causing his car to plough into the concrete wall on the exit of the turn.

This meant a slight anti-climax to the race as the field had to finish the race under the safety car, with Button coming home first for the 3rd time this season, and for his first ever win at Interlagos. Button finished ahead of the championship runner-up Alonso, with Massa behind him ensuring that Ferrari came 2nd in the Constructors championship. Webber was 4th, with Hulkenberg a slightly disappointing 5th with Vettel getting 6th which was enough for him to bring home a 3rd successive world championship â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the first to do so since Michael Schumacher, who himself finished 7th, with Vergne, Kobayashi and Raikkonen rounding up the top ten. Importantly for Petrov, he finished 11th ensuring Caterham got 10th for the constructorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; championship. So for the first and only time of the season, both Ferrari drivers had spots on the podium, which was not much consolation for Alonso, who knew a championship win for Ferrari would have to wait at least another year. Meanwhile Sebastian Vettel was able to celebrate being the youngest ever triple-world champion at the tender age of 25 years and 145 days.

The key to Vettelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s championship was picking up every available point on offer when the car was not on top form, and dominating races when their car was on form. An example of the former was when Vettel claimed a surprising 2nd place in the first race of the season when their qualifying form was not the best. Even when the racing was very difficult and tight in Monaco, Vettel still managed to eek out what he could when he knew more points were on offer when overtaking Hamilton as the McLaren was leaving the pits to take 4th in that race. The outstanding Abu Dhabi race where Vettel raced from the back of the grid to claim 3rd place was another cornerstone. When Red Bull were on top, was during the Asian races where Vettel was able to claim 4 back-to-back wins in Singapore, Japan, South Korea and India. For this, a very unpredictable season, every point was clearly crucial.

For Alonso, the first lap incidents that caused retirements in Belgium and Japan were clearly where big points were lost. Also, Ferrari started off with an inferior car at the start of the season, which resulted in relatively poor finishes in China and Bahrain (9th and 7th respectively for Alonso). In the case of Lewis Hamilton, team mistakes (particularly in the pit-lane), crashes (with Maldonado, Grosjean and Hulkenberg) and reliability issues (in Singapore and Abu Dhabi

where he was leading) cost him the championship. For his teammate Button, not being able to get a handle on the MP4-27 and how to work the tyres during the first half of the season cost him big points. For Kimi Raikkonen, it was a good return to the sport, after his stint at rallying the previous 2 years. For his next year in his Lotus, Kimi would hope to have a better car from the off that can produce better qualifying form which could enable him to fight more regularly for race wins. Mercedes just need to learn from their design mistakes from this year. Most commentators suspect that the double-DRS feature on their car sent them down a design cul-de-sac from which they never really recovered from. Lewis Hamilton will certainly be hoping this is the case.

Volkswagen launched the first GTI back in 1975, then came the birth of the R32 which set a whole new benchmark for the German geniuses. Now we have the Golf R, which in my opinion is the best Golf ever. After spending a little time behind the wheel of Volkswagen’s new Golf R, we can confirm that it is indeed a very special car. And considering it took them almost three years for this thing, we can now say it was well worth the wait.

Fuel Consumption? Average fuel consumption of 33.6mpg (41.5mpg for economical driving).

How does it drive? Well, it’s one great car. Easy to drive, the Golf R feels like the R32’s younger, trimmer, and smarter brother – it lacks the R32’s raw anger, but it’s much more enjoyable to drive fast. Golf R’s handling is Volkswagen at its best: Fantastic grip and very nice balance, with great seat-of-the-pants feedback and plenty of warning from the tyres before they break traction.

Why would I want one? Very fast, lots of fun, reasonably priced and they hold their value.

This is the main conclusion of the study “Black spots: traffic accidents in Spanish capitals” carried out by Línea Directa Aseguradora in which more than 1.2 million motor vehicle accidents in provincial capital cities in the last six years were analysed. The main aim of the report, which has RK CAPITAL BLACK SPOTS attracted a great deal of media attention, 1 MADRID M-40 is to analyse a phenomenon causing 18% 2 BARCELONA Avenida Diagonal more fatal accidents than on interurban 3 MADRID M-30 roads. To this end, the areas of the Spanish capital cities in which Línea Directa has 4 MADRID Paseo de la Castellana registered the highest number of accidents, 5 SEVILLA Puente del V Centenario have been identified, which has made it 6 ALICANTE Avenida de la Universidad y circunvalación A-70 possible to create, for the first time, a map 7 ALICANTE Gran Vía of accident black spots, i.e. those streets 8 SEVILLA Avenida de Kansas City and roads on which over 100 accidents a 9 ALMERÍA Avenida del Mediterráneo year have been recorded. According to the list of black spots, 10 BARCELONA Avenida Meridiana Barcelona, Madrid and Seville head the Top 11 BARCELONA Paseo de la zona Franca – Ronda Litoral 15 of provincial capitals.
