RED BULL REVIVAL! Speculation over certain driver’s F1 futures turned into reality shortly after the 14th round of the championship in Singapore. The gearbox failure to Lewis Hamilton’s Mclaren in that race will have played some part in his decision to move away from that team. Lewis announced that he has signed a 3-year deal for a drive with the Mercedes team. This also in turn meant Mclaren could announce that they have signed the current Sauber driver Sergio Perez as his replacement. Although the 22-year old has not won a race so far in F1, Mclaren can see the potential in hiring the man who has delivered 3 podiums this year for Sauber. These inter-team movements inevitably led to further speculation over other drivers – the obvious one being Michael Schumacher. Everyone did not have long to wait to find out what his plans were, as on the Thursday immediately before the 15th round in Suzuka, Japan, Michael held a press conference to announce that at the end of the year he would be retiring from the sport, by adding, “This time it might be forever”.

As far as the on-track action was concerned, battleresumed between the contenders for this year’s championship, with Red bull clearly showing that their cars have been developed in such a way that optimises their qualifying performance. At Suzuka, for the first time this year, Red Bull got their first front row lock-out of the season, with Sebastian Vettel getting pole and Mark Webber getting 2nd on the grid. This was Vettel’s 34th F1 career pole position, putting him 3rd in the all-time greatest pole-winners, behind Ayrton Senna (with 65) and Michael Schumacher (68). Schumacher himself was down in 23rd on the grid, thanks to his 10-place penalty after the crash he caused in the previous race. Q3 was disrupted after Kimi Raikkonen spun his Lotus creating a yellow flag situation, meaning certain flying laps had to be aborted, leaving many drivers’ first runs as being the qualifying times. This meant Kobayashi was 3rd on the grid at his home race, and behind Kamui were Grosjean, Perez, Alonso, Raikkonen, Button (who was 3rd fastest, suffered a 5-place drop due to a gearbox change), Hamilton and Massa.

At the race start, Grosjean again caused an accident – with his attention being paid to Perez who was alongside him at the first corner, Romain failed to see the Red Bull of Webber in front of him slowing down for the 2nd corner, resulting in contact that put Webber onto the grass and damage to Grosjean’s front wing – both eventually getting to the pits for repairs at the end of the first lap. Webber went on to call Grosjean a “first lap nut case” after the race!

Someone who didn’t make it past the first corner was Fernando Alonso, after he exposed his left rear tyre to the right front wing end plate of Raikkonen’s Lotus, causing a puncture and his car to spin off and beach itself on the run-off area. No points for Fernando in Japan! Bruno Senna also managed to nudge Nico Rosberg off the track at the 2nd corner, putting the Mercedes into retirement and the Williams into the pit for a new nose cone. Both Grosjean and Senna were to serve pit-lane penalties later for their misdemeanours – for Grosjean a 10-second stop-and-go, which was a let-off for a driver who had now caused 7 first lap accidents this season!

With 2 stranded cars in relatively dangerous spots, the safety car was called for bringing the pack together, with Vettel leading from Kobayashi, Button, Massa, Raikkonen, Perez, Hamilton, Hulkenberg and Maldonado. At the re-start, Vettel

was able to make ground before the chicane before the start of the lap, as Kobayashi managed to hold everyone else up being stuck in first gear. As the initial laps unfolded, Vettel was clear out front with Kobayashi, Button and Massa all close together. At the beginning of the 3rd lap, Perez tried to make a move on the outside of Raikkonen, which put his car wide on the entrance to the 2nd corner – this allowed Hamilton to pass. Vettel was 3.5 seconds ahead of Kobayashi with 4 laps gone, and was still putting in the fastest laps of anyone on the 8th, 9th and 10th laps – Vettel was finding a groove that no-one on this day could realistically match.

again at the hairpin, put his car in a defensive position, which did not allow Perez to make the same move as he tried earlier. Not anticipating this, Perez arrived too fast into the corner and had to veer wide to avoid Hamilton, and the late braking on the outside of the curve caused Perez to spin round and beach his Sauber in the gravel trap – Perez was out!

On the 6th lap, as Perez had more pace than Hamilton (it was later revealed that for the first 20 or more laps, Lewis had a rear suspension glitch) Sergio made a lunging wheel-locking pass down the inside of Hamilton at the hairpin, and then was soon catching Raikkonen. By the tenth lap, Hamilton had Hulkenberg for company. By lap 13, Webber had only got up to 17th. Lap 18 saw the first of the front runners in for their first pit stops, with Button, Hulkenberg and Raikkonen all in. Mclaren was resigned to losing a place to Massa, as due to having totally new tyres at the start of the race due to not getting into the final part of qualification, the Ferrari still had great pace at this stage. Mclaren were more focussed on trying to jump Kobayashi. However, what Mclaren hadn’t foreseen was where Button would end up after his pit stop – it happened to be right behind a slow-moving Toro Rosso in the shape of Daniel Ricciardo. Sauber had to respond to Button’s stop and so brought in Kobayashi on lap 15. Kamui was able to keep ahead of Jenson, but was also now stuck behind Ricciardo! The other front runners came in for their pit-stops in subsequent laps, and on lap 18, Massa came out of the pits ahead of both Kobayashi and Button to gain 2nd position in the race. Hamilton was also able to make the jump on Perez in the pits. On the 19th lap, Hamilton realising that he could be vulnerable to attack from Perez

By lap 26, Vettel was a comfortable 10 seconds ahead of Massa. With Webber effectively on a 1-stop strategy (due to a very early stop for a new nose cone on the first lap), his stop was on lap 27 from 9th. Schumacher was also making good progress at this stage, making a great move up the inside of Di Resta on the 2nd corner into 11th place. Throughout the race, Button hung onto the rear of Kobayashi, but somehow Kamui was able to keep the Mclaren driver behind him. As the problem that was hampering Hamilton seemed to disappear after 24 laps, Lewis was able to find some decent pace with which to chase to Raikkonen, which was helped with a slow 4 second stop on Kimi’s 2nd pit stop. Mclaren saw this on lap 31 and used this opportunity to bring Lewis in on the following lap. Mclaren managed to get Lewis out after a 2.5 second pit stop, allowing Lewis to come out side-by-side with the Lotus driver on the entrance to the first corner. The momentum of the Lotus should have ensured Kimi kept the place; however, Lewis was determined to make it matter into turn 2 and managed to squeeze by the Lotus into 5th place.

As the 2nd half of the race progressed, and after both Kobayashi and Button pitted, Button did manage to get within a second of Kobayashi. However, Button kept locking his brakes each time he wanted to make a move on the Japanese driver, and so it finished with Vettel in front from Massa, Kobayashi, Button, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, Maldonado, Webber and Ricciardo. Vettel’s victory made him the first driver to have back-to-back victories in the slightly topsy-turvy world of F1 2012. With Alonso not scoring, it also meant Alonso’s lead in the championship was pegged back to just 4 points. The Japanese crowd also went wild for Kobayashi’s performance. He is only the 3rd Japanese driver to score a podium, and the first to get a podium since Aguri Suzuki’ did at the same event back in 1990. It was also the first podium for Massa since Korea in 2010. It was a timely result for Kobayashi and Massa who were both fighting for their F1 driving careers. Now, from careers to Korea… At the 16th round of the Formula 1 championship in Yeongam, Red Bull continued where they left off by securing another front row lock-out, this time with Mark Webber getting pole – the 200th pole by a Renaultengine car in F1. Other developments were brought to the race weekend by the Red Bull team, which enhanced the new double-DRS feature that helped them to win the previous 2 races and also dominate qualifying in Japan. Lewis Hamilton almost got caught out by not doing a super-soft run in Q1, leaving him vulnerable to be knocked out at the first part of qualifying – only a botched run by Bruno Senna meant he was allowed a path through Q2 and Q3. The yellow flags in qualifying this time affected the end Q2 – Daniel Ricciardo encountered a driveshaft issue with his Toro Rosso forcing him to park the car in a tricky spot just off the circuit. This caught out a number of drivers on their final run, including Paul Di Resta, the 2 Sauber drivers and Jenson Button, who had to settle for 11th on the starting grid in his Mclaren. The grid formed behind the Red Bulls with Hamilton, Alonso, Raikkonen, Massa, Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Rosberg and Schumacher in the top ten respectively.

miles per hour down the longest straight on the F1 calendar. Alonso managed to get by Hamilton in a similar fashion. Grosjean made sure he kept a low profile at the start for once and kept his nose clean, and was settled into 8th place for his first stint. Instead it was Kobayashi who was the first lap crash-merchant who somehow misjudged the space between him and Rosberg to his right, and then Button on his left, taking Button clean out on the 3rd corner with front rear suspension damage, and Rosberg retired a lap later with radiator damage. The Sauber, which was also damaged, soldiered on for a few more laps after the inevitable drive-through penalty, before Sauber eventually had to call Kamui into the pits due to damage from that first lap incident.

The main DRS zone was initially out of action for a number of laps, until Rosberg’s car was taken away from the danger area on the main straight. It wasn’t until after the first set of pit stops, did the DRS zone start to come into play for some of the front runners. Prior to his stop, Hamilton was able to keep up with the pace of Alonso. However, on lap 18, something completely changed on Lewis’s car that meant the handling seriously deteriorated. Almost in complete contrast to what happened in Japan, a rear roll bar broke. Hamilton was able to complete the race, but not before he had to deal with a number of fast chargers who found Hamilton as easy picking, whereas others had to struggle past. Massa made light work of Hamilton in the DRS zone on lap 21. Raikkonen was the next in line, who first of all made a failed DRS move on lap 24, then made the DRS work on lap 25, only for Hamilton to gain the place back between turns 3 and 4 by saving up KERS to make the move back! Raikkonen was stuck behind Lewis until the Mclaren had to make an early second stop – the roll bar issue was causing much more tyre wear than normal.

At the race start, Vettel got a better start than Webber, he was ahead of the Aussie on the first 2 corners, and was able to maintain the lead into the 3rd corner even though both Red Bulls were side-by-side at over 190 76

Up front the 2 Red Bulls kept a fast steady pace whilst managing their tyres. Webber was also managing the gap between himself and Alonso, which never posed a major threat to his 2nd position. Behind Alonso however, Massa seemed to be the faster of the 2 Ferraris, meaning the pit-wall crew had to be alert to the possibility of an inter-team battle to impact on Alonso’s championship crusade. So a call was made for Massa to slow down, back-to-back podiums was not to be for Felipe! With Mclaren adopting a 3-stop strategy for Hamilton, Raikkonen was assured a 5th place, albeit some way behind the Ferraris after Lewis’s 2nd stop. Further back, Gosjean and Hulkenberg were having a good scrap – Grosjean managing to eventually get by Hulkenberg on lap 33 in the DRS zone. On lap 39, it was the turn of Grosjean to

deal with the suffering Mclaren of Hamilton, with Hulkenberg in close pursuit too. Grosjean tried a move at the end of the DRS zone which resulted in Lewis and Romain being side-by-side on the run up to turn 4. With both drivers focussed on each other, Nico Hulkenberg used this as an opportunity to run around the outside of both drivers, thereby gaining the optimum position for the inside of turn 5 resulting in the Force India driver getting 6th position after being 8th earlier on in the lap! On lap 43, Hamilton was back in for his fourth set of tyres, putting him behind the 2 Toro Rossos. The Red Bull pit wall were having to manage Vettel’s pace as there was a chance that the wear on the front right tyre might not hold up for the last few laps – instructions were given to ease up, to ensure he

could get the car home for victory. Hamilton’s situation had insult added to injury when his car collected a piece of the track’s discarded Astroturf which did nothing for the car’s aerodynamics, meaning for the last few laps, he was really struggling just to hold onto 10th place from the advancing Perez.

The top ten finished in the following order: Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Massa, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, Grosjean, Vergne, Ricciardo and Hamilton. This was Red Bull’s first one-two of the year, and allowed Vettel to have 3 wins in a row and crucially a 6-point lead over Alonso in the championship. Massa’s run of good form was also rewarded, with a contract to be in the second Ferrari seat for the 2013 season. This form also helped Ferrari to leapfrog Mclaren in the Constructors Championship standings.

Driver Profile Hamilton has now resigned himself to having very little chance of winning the 2012 championship. Realistically, it is now down to just 2 drivers, with Vettel firmly in the driving seat. Ferrari have been forced into a position where it must improve it’s car for the four remaining races if Alonso is to have any chance of standing in Vettel’s way!

How does it drive?

The CRV is designed primarily for road rather than offroad use. It’s also as comfortable and as easy to drive as any family hatchback. There is lots of interior space and the boot is simply immense. It’s safe, reliable and won’t lay waste to your bank account.

From 24,000€ to 37,100€ depending on the model and extras you choose.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine produces a rather unremarkable 148bhp and 238lb ft of torque. The 2.0-litre petrol produces the same power output but doesn’t provide such strong mid-range urge, yet still this makes the CR-V a comfortable long-distance cruiser. Road and wind noise are well contained and both petrol and diesel engines are smooth and pretty civilized. Both engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard or the option of a five-speed automatic.

In addition, in the case of Expatriate customers, Línea Directa will act as an intermediary, administrator and advisor with the public body, with an aim to speeding up the processes of compensation and repairing material damage to vehicles, which will be assessed, processed and compensated entirely by the Consortium. To this end, Línea Directa has set up a helpline 902 326 326 which its customers affected by the damage can call in order to receive help and information both in English and German on the correct processes required.
