The Lewis Show in Hungary! Round 11 of the Formula 1 World Championship in Budapest, Hungary, wasn’t what you would call a classic – far from it. In terms of the season as a whole so far, it was probably the least enjoyable of the 11 races, with non-existent overtaking. It has, however, given us more insight into the season ahead, but still leaves the world pondering… Who has got what it takes to become world champion in 2012? We did get some clues from the Hungary weekend. All weekend, Lewis Hamilton did what he had to do to make the most of the cards that were thrown his way. The upgrades that Mclaren had made over the summer months were finally paying off for Hamilton. He was quick all the way through practice, and his consistent pace transferred through to qualifying on the Saturday, allowing him to place his Mclaren at the very front of the grid. This gave Mclaren their 150th F1 championship pole. Behind the Mclaren, the grid formed with Romain Grosjean, Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Pastor Maldonado, Bruno Senna and Nico Hulkenberg. It was the first time that Bruno Senna had got into the final part of qualification for Williams, and in the process, he knocked the Red Bull of Mark Webber down to 11th.

Even before the race started, Michael Schumacher, who was already starting from 17th place, had further traumas to deal with when he caused an aborted start by inadvertently placing his car in a position that was too far forward for his grid position. This was obvious to those around him (his rear wheels were near enough where his front wheels should have been placed!). Not being fully aware of the procedure that follows, when Schumacher saw the red lights appear (to signal the aborted start), Schumacher switched off his engine when he should have followed the rest of field round the track again for a second formation lap (which has been the case for over 6 years!). This led to Schumacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mercedes being pushed to the pit lane to start behind the other runners. To make matters worse, he picked up a puncture whilst this was happening! So when he eventually came to start the race, Schumacher had to come back into the pits to change tyres, which in itself caused more problems as he exceeded the pit lane speed limit, meaning he got awarded a drive through penalty! Technical difficulties with the

car’s telemetry later on eventually meant Schumacher retired his car midway through the race. This series of unfortunate events could have further ramifications – would this help Schumacher to decide whether or not to continue with his second Formula 1 career? Time will tell.

In the race itself, Hamilton got away well and got away with a slight lock-up into the first corner. Behind, Button managed to make a move on Vettel, by getting on the outside of turn 2, which becomes the inside to the next corner to complete the pass. Whilst Grosjean managed to keep pace with Hamilton up front during the first and second stints, Vettel was to let the world know that he was frustrated being kept behind Button after their respective pit stops, asking the team to ‘do something’ over the team radio.

During this period, Mclaren were mulling over what was the best strategy for both of their drivers, and decided to bring Button in on lap 34, to stick him on a 3-stop strategy. This baffled Jenson, as he felt that there was still plenty of life left in the tyres he had on. Unfortunately for Jenson, this stop meant that he was now on a position on the track which stuck him behind Williams’ Bruno Senna, and with a track that was allowing virtually no overtaking, meant Button was stuck behind the Williams for a further 8 laps. This meant that overall he lost positions to both Vettel and Raikkonen (the Lotus clearing Alonso on lap 17 when the Ferrari came 80

in for it’s tyre change). In clear air, the Lotus made good headway by making a series of fast laps when Kimi needed them. Mclaren kept Lewis on a 2-stop strategy, which was also the only route Lotus were ever going to take with their drivers. History should have told Mclaren that at Budapest, track position is king – back in 1990, the slower Williams of Thierry Boutsen managed to stave off the onslaught of the much faster Mclaren of Ayrton Senna to take victory! In 2012, Lotus did not want to bring Grosjean in at the wrong time, to allow him to be stuck behind Alonso and Webber; the later was on the harder tyre at the time with the potential of doing what Bruno Senna was doing to Button! When Vettel came in for his 2nd stop on lap 38, Raikkonen managed again to put some very fast laps in to enable another jump up the pecking order into 3rd place. Lotus were now wary of Vettel, so they brought Grosjean in a lap after Vettel, leaving Kimi’s Lotus to circulate in 2nd place, approximately 14 seconds behind Hamilton. Lewis’s 2nd stop was on lap 40, and Kimi’s was on lap 45. Due to the brilliant pace of Raikkonen’s car at different parts of the race, when it came to the 2nd stop, it brought the 2 Lotus drivers to the end of the main straight at the same time. They were together, with Kimi on the inside after coming out of the pits, and Romain on the outside after coming down the straight. Kimi then forced his teammate wide on the first corner and proved that he could still go wheel-to-wheel with his competitors, after 2 years out of the sport.

After this drama, Raikkonen was still able to make up ground on Hamilton. However, Lewis was able to maintain his top spot for the rest of the race, with Kimi only able

to shadow him on the remaining laps. So it finished Lewis, Kimi and Romain on the podium – the 2nd time this year that Lotus were able to celebrate a double podium. Vettel, Alonso, Button, Senna, Webber, Massa and Rosberg made up the rest of the top ten. In terms of Alonso’s championship, the result, which on the face of it, was not brilliant, still allowed a wider gap to emerge to his nearest rival (Webber) – which was the best he could hope for on what was Alonso’s birthday.

What can we expect in the remaining 9 races? A focal point for many people involved in Formula 1 and outsiders who are paying an interest, is what Lotus can achieve. Many assumed that after seven different race winners in the first 7 races, that eventually we would see Kimi Raikkonen, or even Romain Grosjean take a victory at some point. In Bahrain and Hungary, both cars showed good pace, with double podium results for the team. In Germany, the team trialled a wing stalling system – something akin the Mercedes double DRS, except that the system enhances the rear wing drag as opposed to front wing enhancing system that Mercedes employ. Although the team haven’t seen the full benefit of this new system yet, expect this ‘turbo-charged’ DRS system to come into full effect for the forthcoming Belgian (Spa) and Italian (Monza) Grand Prixs, where DRS will be crucial in the long straights that these circuits feature.

Driver Profile

It’s also not unreasonable to expect Force India to improve on their results. Both the Spa and Monza circuits in previous years have suited the set-up for the Force India cars, with their best ever showing taking place in the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix, when Giancarlo Fisichella drove a fine race to finish second – on that occasion, behind the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. You can be sure that Red Bull will not take things lying down. Constantly pushing the envelope, Adrian Newey, their chief designer, will no doubt have some new tricks up his sleeve to ensure that Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel both have cars that will be pushing their rivals to the limits – as long as they stick to the rules! In terms of driver’s seats in 2013 and beyond, the question marks over Hamilton, Schumacher and Massa should be resolved. With Webber confirmed for another Red Bull drive in 2013, Hamilton is now more than likely resigned to having to stick with making another deal with Mclaren, if he wants remain in a competitive seat. Unless Schumacher suddenly decides he has finally had enough of the sport, which is unlikely given the amount of time and effort he and his team at Mercedes have put in over the last 3 seasons. Ferrari have not taken up an option on Felipe Massa for next season, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be racing for them in 2013. However, residing in 14th place in the 2012 championship is bound to hamper his bargaining power with the Scuderia. Does this mean we will get to see Adrian Sutil make a surprise return to the sport after a year out? So who will take the championship in 2012? Well, given that there is still a maximum of 225 points up for grabs in the remaining races, it’s not inconceivable for one of the chasing pack to catch up with the leading runners. Out of Rosberg, Button and Grosjean, the latter 2 on paper seem to at least have the machinery to make something out of the remaining year – whether Mercedes can bring enough upgrades to make a difference to Rosberg’s year remains to be seen. The smart money then has to go on the current top 5. Alonso, Webber and Hamilton are now all multiple winners for this year, so have the momentum with them. You can never discount Vettel, and with some of Kimi Raikkonen’s favourite circuits coming up, do not be surprised if he comes up trumps on more than one occasion. However, for this to happen, Kimi does need to improve his qualifying form. For this season, there are echoes of 2010, when up until the final few races, there were still 5 potential championship winners. Although some would argue that there are more similarities with the 2007 season. In that year, a certain driver in a certain silver car reached a milestone of 100 races in Formula 1 (Alonso – 2007, Hamilton in 2012). Hamilton finished with an almost identical gap to Raikkonen in the Hungarian Grand Prix in both years, and again we have Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton battling it out to see who will be champion – except this time round Red Bull are there to add to the numbers!

How does it drive? The 4-litre V8 petrol engine is worthy of the handling. That reward is a phenomenal, mechanical wail from the engine and the sort of acceleration that loosens your bowels. Right to the 8,400rpm rev limiter, this car is relentless. The 0-62mph benchmark comes in 4.9 seconds, but it feels quicker.

Why would I want one? The M3 is hilarious fun to drive, with massive power, pace and surprising poise. It’s not the most spacious saloon available, but it’s the most unhinged – brilliantly so. The noise is sensational, the power prodigious and it looks fantastic.

AMG takes the relative restraint of the MercedesBenz C-Class and turns the dial up to eleven. There are massive tailpipes around the back, while large air intakes at the nose feed cooling air into no less than seven radiators. Vents, lumps and bumps festoon the bodywork, but despite its obvious visual aggression it’s neatly integrated. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch items are available optionally) struggle to hide the big brakes. Add a bonnet that’s rippled and bumped to cover the huge V8 engine underneath it and the C63 AMG certainly can’t be mistaken for a mere ordinary C-Class.

How does it drive? The high-revving 6.2-litre V8’s 451bhp produces eyewidening performance. It’ll keep accelerating as long as your nerve holds, covering the 0-62mph sprint in just 4.5 seconds. It’s a rev-hungry engine, yet, combined with the seven-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission, urgency is always on offer. The V8 is as noisy as it is fast, the sound emanating from under the bonnet and the four fat tailpipes worth the C63’s sticker price alone. The C63’s accelerative ability is mighty.

Why would I want one? C63 AMG is amazing and at the same time bonkers. A 6.2-litre V8 engine under the bonnet of a C-Class, creating an incredibly rapid sports saloon, which not only looks good, but moves like lightning.

They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. 2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. 3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. 4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. 5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.
