The BMW Z4 has the classic two-seat roadster look, but features a modern two-piece power retractable hardtop. The result is an elegant looking car that blends the sportiness of a coupe with the enjoyment of a convertible. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual, eightspeed automatic, or an advanced double-clutch sevenspeed transmission. Standard features include Driving Dynamics Control, which allows the driver to change the vehicles characteristics between normal, sport, and sport+ mode, adaptive brake lights, and a two-piece lightweight-aluminium hardtop.

How does it drive?

The 28i model uses a tuned version of the same engine to deliver 242bhp and a sub six-second 0-62mph time. In-gear acceleration in third or fourth gear at between 3000-5000rpm is particularly strong, while the exhaust note turns decidedly ‘snarly’ at that point. Enthusiasts will also enjoy the turbo boost ‘blow off’ sound every time you punch the throttle and back off slightly. The Z4 sDrive28i comes equipped with the adjustable sport suspension that allows the driver to adjust the riding experience, from soft and comfortable, to stiff, snappy and sporty. As good as this car is in the performance department, it’s even harder to fault the ride and handling set up. It doesn’t seem to matter how hard you push the Z4 sDrive28i through these twisty bends, the car always feels planted and composed.

S models get more aggressive looks and the TT is no different. S badges front and rear plus embossed in the seats are the obvious clues that say you bought the hot version. So are aluminium painted side mirrors. There’s unique front and rear fascias plus new 19-inch wheels all wrapped up in summer performance tires. Providing the power for the TTS is a direct-injected 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 265 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Standard TTs make 211 HP but the same amount of torque. With its 54 additional horses the S sprints from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds vs. 5.3 (these are Audi’s performance figures). The only transmission on any TT is a dual-clutch six-speed S tronic with blink-of-an-eye gear changes. Choose automatic mode or manually select your cogs with the console lever or steering wheel paddles.

How does it drive?

There’s more to the TTS than power. However, all-wheel drive maximizes traction while the S tronic dual-clutch automated manual transmission rips off rapid shifts whether you leave the console-mounted shift lever in Drive or use the shift paddles on the steering wheel. Compared to the regular TT, you also get a fractionally lower ride height, 19-inch wheels and a standard Sport mode that automatically alters the steering assist, suspension firmness and even the exhaust note. Audi TTS boasts considerable performance improvements over the standard TT. Its power delivery is quite broad, and the dual-clutch automated manual gearbox works brilliantly in both automatic and manual modes. Why would I want one? The MX-5 is such a polished performer that it’s hard to isolate one area in which it excels. It’s great to drive, looks superb, comes well equipped and is more practical than you’d think.
