2012

A great year of golf! Another golfing year comes to an end, but what a year. Four great majors topped off with one of, if not the best Ryder Cups ever!

The First Major, The U.S Masters

The first Major, the U.S Masters, threw up a classic with Bubba Watson triumphing in a dramatic playoff with Luis Oosthuizen when earlier he produced one of the greatest shots ever seen in the history of the Masters. His was when Luis holed his second shot at the par 5, 2nd in the final round scoring a very rarely seen ALBATROSS! At this stage he looked on course to take the green jacket. But Bubba had other ideas, and a great back nine took him into a playoff. It was Bubba’s amazing recovery shot at the 2nd playoff hole that in the end was remembered more than any other shot that had been hit that year. Therefore taking Bubba Watson onto winning the Masters Tournament and putting on that historical green jacket.

BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth Before the 2nd Major of the year we had the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Luke Donald retained his title, and with this retained the No1 spot in the World Rankings, as Rory Mcilroy so far hadn’t found his top form in the Majors.

The Second Major, The U.S. Open The Olympic Club in San Francisco Webb Simpson came from behind to take the title with a 1 over par total of 281. I think the course was the biggest winner that week as it took its toll on so many big names, it did however show that Tiger Woods was getting close to his best again.

The Third Major, The british Open

The 141st Open Championship at Lytham St Anne’s looked to be going Adam Scott’s way as he had a seven shot lead only to crumble and eventually be passed by Ernie Els who birdied the last hole as Scott made Bogey to lose by a single shot.

The Final Major of the year – The U.S. PGA Championship

The last Major saw Rory Mcilroy destroy the field at Kiawah Island to take the US PGA Championship and with it take the top spot in the World Rankings. Rory followed up his win by winning two of the Fed X playoff events and looked the favourite to take the 10 million dollar prize, only to see Brand Snedeker walk off with the Jackpot.

The Amazing Ryder Cup at the Medinah Club

Highlight of The Year! So it began, and for 2 days the Americans were whipping the Europeans. 10-4 up to the Americans was the score on Saturday afternoon with only two games still out on the course. Garcia and Donald against Woods and Stricker was the first to finish, it took the match all the way to the last hole to decide the winner, but Europe won, one in the bag thanks to Garcia and Donald. Leaving Poulter and Mcilroy the last game and hope for Europe to pull the score back, and did they. Poulter went on to birdie the last 5 holes to seal a victory and pull the score at the end of the day back to 10-6. Giving Europe some hope, little as it may have been. What transpired on that last day was incredible and amazing as Europe’s hero’s battled back to win 14half-13half. It will remain with all those who witnessed it truly one, if not the best Ryder Cup competition of all time, (well if you are a European anyway). The year ends up with Rory Mcilroy at the top spot of the World Ranking and a resurgent Tiger Woods with 3 U.S tour wins finishing in 2nd place, Luke Donald in 3rd, Lee Westwood 4th and Justin Rose in 5th round up the top 5 of 2012. 2013 is going to be an exciting year especially if Tiger Woods rediscovers his Major form. Also maybe Lee Westwood can capture that elusive 1st Major, all this is possible but they will have to work hard to knock Rory off that top spot.

Rory signs with Nike Rory’s status in golf’s as the No1 golfer was enhanced as he signed for Nike for a reputed 250 Million dollars over 10 years.

RORY MCILROY WINS HIS FIRST VARDON TROPHY AND PGA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Rory Mcilroy, after winning four tournaments in 2012, including the PGA Championship, is expected to sweep golf’s end-of-season awards. He has just brought home two of the biggest: the PGA of America’s Player of the Year award and the Vardon Trophy. The PGA Player of the Year is awarded on a points system, while the Vardon Trophy is given to the player with the lowest adjusted scoring average, based on a minimum of 60 rounds, with no incomplete rounds, in events co-sponsored or designated by the PGA Tour. Rory has also emulated Luke Donald by capturing both the European and U.S Tour money titles. Looks like Santa has come early in the Mcilroy household!
