Bradley Smith turned professional in 1976 aged 16. He spent his first 4 years as an assistant to Neil Large at Royal Eastbourne Golf Club. In 1980 he started playing in regional tournaments and in 1982 joined Keith MacDoanld as Senior Assistant at Goodwood Golf Club. It was in 1983 that Bradley decided to turn to playing and so for the next 10 years he played competitively all over Europe gaining a European Tour membership in 1987. Bradley twice played the Safari Tour during this time. In 1994 he fancied a change and so decided to move to the Costa del Sol, initially this was only to be for 4 months working at the Miraflores Golf Club. After his four months were finished the plan was to go back to the UK to play in regional competitions. However, a meeting with Martin Stewart at Marbella Golf Club led him to join them there as the head professional where he remained for 3 and half years. Since then Bradley has stayed on the coast doing various things including two TV episodes of ‘Living in the Sun’. Now a Senior, Brad has had mixed success. He qualified for the 2010 Senior Open at Carnoustie, only to suffer a bite to his hand. He continued to play but was handicapped, however, still found it a great experience! Unfortunately, a back injury had plagued him over the last year but thankfully he is now over that and is fit and raring to go for the Senior Masters at La Quinta 1-3 June.

June brings its second major of the year, the US Open. Last year, Roy McIlroy blew the field away at Congressional. This year’s championship has moved to the West Coast at the Olympic Club, San Francisco. The club has hosted the US Open on four previous occasions. In 1955, Jack fleck stunned everyone to beat the legendary Ben Hogan in a playoff. In 1966 Arnold Palmer was seemingly on his way to victory as he started the back 9 on a Sunday with an even Par shot lead, only to stumble home and then the following day lose a playoff to Billy Casper. 21 years later, and Scott Simpson was to overcome Tom Watson and Seve Ballasteros in regulation play to take the title. Then in 1998, Payne Stewart took a four shot lead going into the final round, only to flounder, allowing Lee Jensen to win with a score of level Par.
The Olympic Club was established May 6th 1860, making it America’s oldest athletic club. The club has two clubhouses; the City Clubhouse, and Lakeside Clubhouse. Located in downtown San Francisco, City Clubhouse was re-built in 1912, after the original building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. In 2006 it was restored to its former glory. In 1918, the club assumed operations of the Lakeside Golf Club. Famed architect Arthur Brown, designer of the San Francisco City Hall, designed the Lakeside Clubhouse, which officially opened in 1925. Lakeside Clubhouse is located on Skyline Boulevard overlooking the Pacific Ocean. By 1922, the club had acquired enough land to replace the original golf course with 2 new 18-hole layouts. Willie Watson and Sam Whiting designed the first lake and ocean course in 1924, but storm
damage forced Sam Whiting to redesign both courses in 1927. The lake course remains true to its 1927 design, with only minimal renovations over the years. In preparation for the 1955 US Open, the USGA’s official course architect, Robert Trent Jones Senior, was brought in to toughen up the course.

In recent years the club has changed the greens from POA to bentgrass, and several greens have been rebuilt and renovated. The first routing change since 1927 is the new 8th hole, which has been sculpted into the hillside with views of the clubhouse. It will play as a 200yard par 3. The players at this year’s competition will find the course a tough challenge, with four par 3’s and only one par 5. There are also two par 4’s at over 500 yards. The opening hole measures 520 yards, and the 17th measures 505 yards.
It’s going to be a tough nut to crack so who’s got the game? Two outsiders with strong chances are Steve Strikker, who recently competed 49 straight cuts on the US Tour, only to miss out on 50 at the player’s championship. However, he’s very straight and consistent which are the ingredients required to win a US Open. Ben Curtis is swinging the club great. Already a British Open winner in 2003 at Sandwich, he knows what it takes to win under the most extreme pressure. Both these guys are worth an each-way bet! Rory McIlroy has showed that he’s got what it takes, along with Graham McDowel. Lee Westwood hasn’t won a masters yet, but this US Open could be his best chance. Phil Mickleson will certainly fancy his chances, as he loves playing on the West Coast. You can watch all four days of the US Open live on Sky TV. Ben Curtis

A big mistake is to keep your head down too long which will prevent any weight transfer.
Your finish will be stuck resulting in lots of inconsistent shots.

Chip & Pitch Shots Ball position and swing line MIDDLE
BACK
Ball position for a lofted chip coming out lower with the ball running on landing is back in the stance, hands forward, weight 60% on your left side.
FRONT
Standard chip of pitch ball position middle of stance. Weight favouring the left side with hands still ahead of the ball.
The backswing should be on the outside making the clubface open and steeper. This allows the club to descend into the back of the ball.
Ball forward for the lofted shot, hands level stance open.
The club stays low and square to open through impact.
With the correct angle of attack the ball will run up the face gaining backspin.
Make sure with the lofted shot you swing on an out-to-in plane, especially on the follow-through which should be left of target with the clubface open.
