Weight gain:

Inevitable as you age? Is weight gain with age inevitable? It can seem that way when your weight climbs despite dieting and even exercising. Indeed, a recent study suggests that a range of lifestyle choices, not just the number of calories in your diet, influence your weight as you age. The study included more than 100,000 men and women who were in good health and not obese. Their weight, diet and lifestyle habits were tracked for up to 20 years. The pounds seemed to creep on, with an average weight gain of slightly less than 2 pounds every 4 years.

What surprised researchers was that specific foods were independently associated with more weight gain: • Crisps • Potatoes • Unprocessed red meats • Processed meats

Foods associated with less weight gain: • Vegetables • Nuts • Fruits • Whole grains

Main Culprits: Alcoholic beverages and fruit juices were associated with a small but gradual increase in weight. Sugar-sweetened beverages were a major contributor to weight gain. Lifestyle factors also influenced weight gain. Not surprisingly, physical activity was important to weight control. So was limiting TV time. Sleep also factored in. Weight gain was lowest among people who slept 6 to 8 hours a night and was higher among those who slept less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours. 30

Scientists have been studying green tea for years, and they keep finding new and amazing benefits. It’s hard to imagine that a mere plant, like green tea, can contain so many properties that are healthy and healing for the entire body. It can be consumed either as the tea or in capsule form and studies that indicate the benefits of its consumption usually suggest consuming around four cups of green tea per day.

Green Tea Reasons to drink

Green tea has been gaining in popularity due to its high concentration of antioxidants and immune boosting powers. It is also associated with weight loss, a fact that has been confirmed by numerous studies. In addition, green tea has been touted as an effective preventative tool against such serious conditions as:

Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, High Cholesterol, Diabetes, Infertility, Cognitive Function. Green tea has a long history beginning over 5,000 years ago in China and other parts of Asia. It comes from the plant Camellia sinensis, and is made by drying the leaves of the plant. Black and Oolong tea are made from the same plant, but through a different processing method. Green tea is packed with antioxidants, approximately 10 times more than the average fruit or vegetable, including various polyphenols, flavonoids and EGCG. It also contains caffeine, but much less than in coffee. Whilst 8 ounces of coffee contains around 95 milligrams of caffeine, 8 ounces of green tea has 30 to 50 milligrams. Green tea is available decaffeinated, and offers the same health benefits.

Why is

?

stretching important

Over time we tend to become less flexible and stiffer. You might notice your range of motion start to become limited as you get older. Performing heavy weighted exercises shorten and stiffen your muscles and connective tissues when effort is imposed. Having tight muscles gives you less muscle growth gains from strength training. So a full range of motion during exercise assists in a better and faster recovery, meaning you can train sooner on the same muscle groups. Stretching specific body parts allows the movement to cause more blood flow in and out of the worked areas. Blood carries oxygen and nutrition to help the muscles to recover and removes toxins such as built up acids (having post-workout drink/food assists in this process). Stretching counteracts tightness and attempts to restore muscles to their original length. It also increases flexibility which is important as poor flexibility prevents you from achieving a full range of motion in your training and exercise.

Triceps Stretches The triceps muscle makes up for two thirds of your total upper arm size, many believe the bicep is the largest most powerful muscle but this is just a common myth, the tricep is responsible for straightening your arm and is greatly involved in a pushing action.

Boxing hits Marbella Matthew Macklin, Champion Boxer, and his new boxing gym, MGM in Marbella.

Matthew Macklin is a former two times European, British and Irish Middleweight Champion. Currently rated as No.3 in the world, by ‘Ring’ magazine, the Birminghamborn Irishman has been based in Marbella, Spain, since April this year. He is the British-Irish professional boxer, who proudly represents his ancestral homeland of Ireland, and who fights at Middleweight or the Divisions, either side. He is also affectionately known by his fans, as “The Tipperary Tornado”, “Mack the Knife”, or “The Roscommon Rock”.

37

Matthew Macklin was born in May, 1982, in Birmingham, to Irish parents, Seamus and Kathleen. He, and his brother Seamus (who is also a boxer) spent much of their youth in his mother’s native county, Tipperary, and it was there that Matthew learnt to play one of Ireland’s national sports, hurling. As a child, Matthew would make regular summer trips to Ireland, and quickly showed talent at the sport. He played at underage level with Tipperary, up to under 16s. Matthew regularly came up against stars of the current Tipperary team. Unfortunately, his ankle ligament injury, at the age of 16, threatened to disrupt an already promising boxing career, so he made the decision to pack in hurling, although he’s still a devoted hurling and Gaelic football supporter. He regularly attends games in Ireland, such as the Poc Fada, and GAA events. He left the independent Solihull School, at the age of 18, and whilst studying law at Coventry University, Macklin won the 2001 ‘National Senior ABA Welterweight’ title for the Small Heath Boxing Club, against Justin Turley, in the final. Afterwards, he was forced to abandon his studies, in order to focus solely on the boxing ring, and has gone from one fighting success story to another. Previously, 30 year old Matthew split his time between fight training in Manchester, and New York; his family home in Birmingham, and with his relations and friends in Tipperary and Roscommon. He is now happy to be training in Spain.

Matthew Macklin’s Professional Career: The Debut Fight

The European Middleweight Title

Macklin turned professional in September 2001, by winning his first fight at the Bellahouston Sports Centre, Glasgow, Scotland. He beat previously undefeated Ram Singh, from Wisbech, in a first round knockout on a card, which included Scottish fighters, Scott Harrison, Alex Arthur and Willie Limond.

Macklin succeeded in beating Finnish Super-fighter, Amin Asikainen, by a brutal first round KO, at the Manchester Velodrome, England, on 25th September, 2009, for the vacant European Middleweight title.

The Jamie Moore Barnstormer In September 2006, Macklin had his highest profile fight when he was defeated in a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender bout, against Manchester’s, Jamie Moore, for the British ‘Light Middleweight’ title, which took place at the George Carnell Leisure Centre, Davyhulme, Manchester, England. Macklin later admitted having major problems trying to make the weight for the fight. It was one of the best action fights ever held in a British boxing ring, and nearly won ‘2006 Fight of The Year’.

The Potential Duddy Fight There has been speculation of a potential Irish title fight against New York based Derry native John Duddy. In December 2009, Macklin moved closer to a world title shot with a points victory over Rafa Sosa Pintos at the National Stadium in Dublin. The fight never happened, and Duddy retired in 2011.

Relinquishing and Retaining the European Middleweight Title Unfortunately, Matthew Macklin was later forced to vacate his European title. However, he would get in first for the fight for the vacant title. A fight against Englishman, Darren Barker, was arranged for the 18th September, 2010, on Frank Warren’s ‘Magnificent Seven Bills’ on Sky box office. The fight would be a big step closer to a world title fight for both men. However, Barker was forced to pull out of the contest, through injury, only weeks before the fight. Georgian slugger, Shalva Jomardashvili, replaced him, and won the fight, via a technical knockout, just two seconds into the sixth round after shoma pulled out. Macklin regained his EBU title, and said that he wanted to go on to fight for a world title next.

The World Title Shots Matthew fought the WBA Middleweight champion, Felix Sturm, on the 25th June, 2011. The fight finished with a split decision win for Sturm. Before his World Title fight with Felix Sturm in Germany, Matthew wowed all the local media, by addressing the press conference, and media interviews, all in German! He had studied the language for 6 years at school, and took a refresher course prior to the Sturm fight. In this fight he lost out to World Middleweight Champ, Felix Sturm, on a controversial split decision, in the German’s hometown of Cologne. The decision was ridiculed in the German and international media, with even the German newspapers reporting on the fight with headlines, such as ‘German Boxing Disgrace’, ‘Miscarriage of Justice’ and ‘Fluke Victory’. According to US television, Macklin had won the fight by 6 rounds, while even German TV scored it to the challenger by 4 rounds. A viewers’ poll, on their website, spoke volumes with 76% of German’s polled believing that Macklin had won the fight, as opposed to just 24% for Sturm. Former undisputed heavyweight champ, Lennox Lewis, tweeted: “Highway Robbery! One of the worst decisions I’ve seen. Macklin won that fight hands down.” In his last fight, on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2012, Matthew Macklin met WBC Diamond Middleweight champion, Sergio Martinez, in Madison Square Garden, New York City. Macklin would go on to lose that fight, after his corner retired him on his stool after round 11 – it was a round in which Macklin was dropped twice near the end, by massive straight lefts from the southpaw, Martinez, after gaining a definitive lead on the scorecards.

39

Looking Forward to a Fighting Future Macklin is particularly known for his ‘come-forward’ fighting style, and ‘cast iron’ chin. But, he has proven, against the likes of Sergio Martinez that he can box effectively as well. He’s now looking forward to fighting on the undercard of ‘Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez’. This will take place on 15th September, in the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, against Joachim Alcine, who is the former Light Middleweight Champion. The winner of this fight will have a shot at the title. Macklin will be travelling over to Las Vegas a couple of weeks, before the fight, to get prepared for the big fight.

‘Men’s Lifestyle’ magazine caught up with Matthew this week in Marbella, to talk about his life as a famous boxer: Q When did you start boxing?

I started boxing when I was 10 years old.

Q What’s your first boxing memory?

Sitting at home, watching the ‘Mike Tyson vs. Larry Holmes’ fight with my Dad, when I was just 5 years old. I was hooked from the start!

Q When was your first fight?

I had my first competitive fight when I was 11 years old.

Q When did you turn professional? At 19 years of age.

Q How long have you been coming to Spain? I’ve been coming to and from Spain since 2006.

Q How do you find training in Spain, compared to England, for things like roadwork and running?

Don’t Forget about Macklin’s

BIG FIGHT! Check it out on

In England, I had to wear more layers of clothing, plus hats and gloves, to keep wrapped up against the rain, wind, and the cold. It’s better weather here in Spain, so obviously, so I need less clothing. It’s more comfortable, and the temperatures are good for sweating, burning up calories, as well as the better air quality. This area, in particular, is great for training, as there are so many hills to go up and down.

Q How many days a week do you train?

6 days a week - for 2-3 hrs a day - plus roadwork (Eg. Running)

Q W hat training do you do between fights?

I keep my fitness ticking over by running and swimming, but it’s also important to let your body recover between fights.

Q When do you normally start dieting for a fight? Usually about 10-12 weeks before.

Q What is your pre-fight meal, and what do you have for breakfast?

Porridge, and more porridge!

Q How do you cope being out in Spain, and not being able to drink alcohol?

I’m not a drinker anyway, but I’ll have a blow out after a fight. Plus, I’ve just passed my 30th birthday, and had a good blowout then, so I don’t fancy another one anytime soon!

Q A lot of sportsmen nowadays are also

savvy businessmen. Have you got any business ventures or interests at the moment? Yes, I have already invested in local bars and nightclubs in Marbella.

Q Who is your favourite boxer of all time? Sugar Ray Leonard.

Q Who do you think is the best boxer in the sport today?

Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

Q What was the greatest fight you ever saw? That’s a tough one. I’m a massive boxing fan, so there’s so many great fights to choose from, but if you pushed me for a fight from the last 10 years or so, I’d go for the first ‘Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Erik Morales’ fight. That was incredible!

Q What’s the toughest part of being a boxer?

The dieting is tough, and the fact that it is such a solitary sport. There is no one else to fall back on.

Q What’s your favourite film of all time? Godfather 1.

Q W hen do you get any time for women?

Q If you could change anything about your life, as a boxer, what would it be?

Not really. Everything that’s happened has made me the person I am today.

Q H ow do you psyche yourself up before a fight?

Before a fight you are already psyched up. The main thing is to remain relaxed and focussed.

Q W hat would you say to those lads nervous about starting fighting as a career?

Just go with the flow and not to over think it.

Q W hat is the one saying that keeps you going when you’re fighting? Just don’t quit.

Q H ow do you cope with all of the travelling you do? Is it lonely?

For ten years I have lived out of a suitcase and yes it is very lonely but now being based here in Marbella at this gym I will hopefully begin to settle into a more normal routine.

Q A nd finally, what would you be doing if you weren’t a boxer?

I know I studied Law at university, but really all I’ve ever wanted to be was a professional boxer, and ultimately, a World Champion.

I can always make time for women, he he!

Q How will you know when it’s the right time to stop boxing?

Once I have achieved all that I want to or I notice that my boxing is starting to slip, my timing is out or my fitness starts to drop then I’d have to consider calling it a day.

Q W ould you encourage your child to be a boxer?

I would definitely want him to do the training and learn boxing but would prefer him to not go down the professional route.

Botox for Men Whenever you laugh, frown, concentrate or squint your facial muscles contract and your skin creases. As you get older your skin loses its elasticity and those creases deepen into lines that become permanently etched on your face. Frown lines between your eyes can become particularly noticeable at a relatively young age, making you look angry, worried or stressed even when you’re not. By injecting tiny amounts of Botox very precisely into specific facial muscles, the nerve impulses responsible for contraction of these muscles are blocked. This causes a temporary weakness or paralysis of that muscle resulting in the overlying skin becoming smooth and unwrinkled.

Avocados are named one of

the healthiest fruits on the planet! Avocados are cholesterol-free but have 30 grams of fat, most of which is heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Per ounce, avocados contain more fibre than other fruit; a typical whole avocado has a whopping 14 grams, which even rivals the fibre in a serving of shredded wheat and bran cereals. They also provide more protein than most fruits, making them a great energy source (since you need carbs, fat, and protein for sustained energy). Compared to most fruits, avocados have higher concentrations of many B vitamins, as well as beta-carotene, magnesium, and vitamins E and K. These nutrients support and sustain your overall health, not to mention your energy, metabolic functioning, and strong bones. Follow up on last month’s General MOT with Medicare

I must say what a professional and great experience I have had with Medicare. Further to the General MOT, Medicare provided me with a Positively Pink voucher enabling me to have a chest ultra sound checking for any lumps or anomalies. The ultra sound was performed at the Fuengirola Radiograpgy Clinic where once again the staff were very helpful, professional and the whole procedure was a very comfortable experience. In as little as a week after undergoing the General Health MOT and the Ultra Sound Chest Screening, my results were back and I had a telephone call to book me in to discuss them down at Medicare. Thankfully everything was fine, all the results came back clear and that I was in good health, phew! If you value your health which we all should do, this simple examination provided by Medicare is a must do! A growing trend among men, eyebrow shaping can bring a lot to the party, grooming-wise. Taking hair from below the eyebrow line, for example, is the nearest thing to a non-surgical facelift, opening up the entire eye area, giving you a more youthful look. It goes without saying that plucking can help the no-no that is the monobrow. Grooming men’s eyebrows is a must! This doesn’t mean removing a lot of hair and shaping them like a woman’s to create high or dramatic arches.

A simple trim and plucking of a few strands here and there will make them look more groomed and can make a man look much more attractive. What’s more is no one will be able to pin point what it is exactly that you have changed about yourself as it is subtle yet extremely effective. Bear in mind that different rules apply for men than women when taming the brows as men’s eyebrows have a different aesthetic look.

Grooming Men’s Eyebrows After

It may take a little trial and error before you master eyebrow grooming yourself. Here are simple tips for perfecting the art of eyebrow plucking for men: Always comb before trimming It isn’t necessary to pluck longer hairs - they only need to be trimmed slightly to eliminate a bushy look. Always comb your eyebrows upward so you can see which ones are the longest. Use an eyelash comb, or rub your eyebrows upward so they run in the same direction. Identify the longest hairs and use a small pair of scissors to trim them.

Pluck sparingly not excessively Don’t pluck your eyebrow hairs too much. This can create a strange appearance and can feminize your face or make you look like you have a strange eyebrow shedding illness! It can also take weeks for your hairs to grow back from tweezing if you make a mistake, making those trips to your local bar unimaginable. Take a break between plucking - this gives you a chance to step back and evaluate your brows from a fresh perspective. Never pluck hairs growing underneath the bulk of your brow as plucking these hairs can uncover thin spots and cause unevenness in your brow. Only pluck hairs above your eyebrows if they are very visible.

Dealing with thick brows Thick eyebrows may result in a unibrow, which is a bridge of hair growing from one eyebrow to the other. You know what they say, “never trust a man with crossed eyebrows”! This is easy to eliminate by gently plucking a few unwanted hairs between the brows. Alternatively you can eliminate this hair for longer by waxing, which will prevent new hair from growing for weeks. Wax the hair growing above and below the bulk of your eyebrows. You may want to visit a specialist for this if you would rather wax, as waxing can cause unwanted thinning and light spots if you misjudge the thickness of your eyebrows. If you don’t have the confidence to take on a pair of tweezers yourself there are many local salons that specialize in male grooming.
