Hugh Jackman is a pretty cool guy. He’s likeable and considering he’s known as an all action hero you can tell he’s intelligent as well. Hugh Michael Jackman was born on the 12th of October, 1968 in Australia to English parents, the youngest of 5 children.

Jackman is best known for his 13-year-long connection with the X-Men character Wolverine. But he’s also starred in several other action films like Swordfish, Van Helsing and Real Steel. As well as other excellent movies such as The Prestige. 6

He graduated with a degree in communications back in 1991 and in that final year added drama to gain more credits. He fell in love with acting. Saying “In that week I felt more at home with those people than I did in the entire three years [at university]”. He went on to do a year course at the Sydney Actors Centre and he knew that was what he wanted to do saying ‘It wasn’t until I was 22 that I ever thought about my hobby being something I could make a living out of. As a boy, I’d always had an interest in theater. But the idea at my school was that drama and music were to round out the man. It wasn’t what one did for a living. I got over that. I found the courage to stand up and say, ‘I want to do it’’.

...when I started I at drama school ce was like the dun of the class...

He had to work at acting though stating that he “always loved acting but when I started at drama school I was like the dunce of the class. It just wasn’t coming right to me. Everyone was cooler, everyone seemed more likely to succeed, everyone seemed more natural at it and in retrospect I think that is good. I think it is good to come from behind as an actor. I think it is good to go into an audition thinking ‘Man I’ve got to be at my best to get this gig.’” Jackman’s big (and lucky) break came in 1999, when he was offered the job of Wolverine in the X-Men. Dougray Scott was originally cast for the role but he was filming Mission Impossible 2 and the filming ran over and so Scott had to turn the offer down. This gave a chance to an unheard of Australian actor and Jackman seized it with both hands.

g There’s somethin e about his style, th t animal rage, tha seemed right for Wolverine...

To become the tough guy that Logan/Wolverine needed to be, Jackman studied Clint Eastwood and Mad Max. He insisted on doing his own stunts and studied marital arts and boxing (especially Mike Tyson). On Tyson, Jackman comments that ‘There’s something about his style, the animal rage, that seemed right for Wolverine. I kept saying to the writers, ‘Don’t give me long, choreographed fights for the sake of it. Don’t make the fights pretty.”

Jackman is 6ft 2 and as the comic character is a foot smaller than Jackman, then clever camera angles needed to be used. He also had to gain a large amount of muscle for the role and by the 4th film could bench press 315 pounds and leg pressed 1000 pounds. Jackman’s Wolverine has appeared in 5 films so far (X-Men, X2, X-Men The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-men: First Class). One of Jackman’s best films is as a magician in The Prestige. Playing a rival of Christian Bale, it tells the tale of two illusionists who try to out do each other. It also stars Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie.

The other of Jackman’s films of note is Darren Aronofsky’s ‘The Fountain’. He plays one role in the film, a Conquistador who finds the tree of life and immortality and then tries to recreate it, five centuries on, for his dying wife. An utterly stunning film and Jackman found it to be his hardest film due to the physical and emotional demands of the part. It took Jackman nine months to achieve the lotus position and another three months to be able to do it under water.

Jackman was close to getting the James Bond role but lost out to Daniel Craig in the end. 7

...I’ll die a happy man knowing I’ve got this film on my CV.

8

In 2008 he replaced Russell Crowe on the epic, Australia, of this he said “This is pretty much one of those roles that had me pinching myself all the way through the shoot. I got to shoot a big-budget, shamelessly old-fashioned romantic epic set against one of the most turbulent times in my native country’s history, while, at the same time, celebrating that country’s natural beauty, its people, its cultures.... I’ll die a happy man knowing I’ve got this film on my CV”.

WWE tournament as tag partner to Zack Ryder to beat WWE US champion Dolph Ziggler (by punching the champion in the jaw when the referee wasn’t looking). He plays piano, partakes in yoga and is part of the School of Practical Philosophy.

Last year, Jackman starred as Jean Valjean in the film Les Misérables, an adaptation of the musical. For the role, he lost 15 pounds and during filming he had to regain 30 pounds to mirror his character’s newfound success. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best ActorComedy or Musical in January 2013 for this performance. Jackman called the movie a “project of passion” and thanked the cast and crew, director Tom Hooper and his wife.

l Life Outside Film As soon as Jackman started to earn serious money, Hugh has supported the idea of microcredit. Microcredit is the idea of giving loans to entrepreneurs in third world countries. He’s also an advisor for the Global Poverty Project and has worked with them as a narrator for their documentaries. He is also a World Vision, a Christian organisation helping with world poverty. He uses his Twitter account for charity. In 2009 he announced that he’d donate 100,000 dollars to one individual’s charity. In the end he donated 50 thousand to ‘Charity: Water’ and 50k to ‘Operation of Hope’.

l Other activities Jackman loves sports. In school he took part in cricket, rugby, swimming and high jumping. He also enjoys kayaking and basketball, supports Norwich City in football, took part in wrestlings’

He is happily married to an actress he first met over 20 years ago and they share a ring with the Sanskrit inscription “Om paramar mainamar”, meaning “we dedicate our union to a greater source”.

That ‘mind getting out of the way’ aka self doubt and fear, allows Jackman to continue pushing himself. “When I have 315 pounds above me, there’s that little breaking point, you either get really pissed off at that weight, or you ask for help from your spotter. It’s that exact point when Wolverine gets not just pissed off, but insanely pissed off. I try to reach that point every day in my workout. And then push through it.” Jackman doesn’t set goals he seeks defining moments. You have to be willing to fail in front of others.”That fear holds all of us back, and that’s the toughest thing about ageing. With age, you see people fail more. You see yourself fail more. How do you keep that fearlessness of a kid? You keep going. Luckily, I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself.”

l The Future Hugh will repeat the role of Wolverine this year in ‘The Wolverine’ and in next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Wolverine in the comics is in his late 40’s and so as Jackman is only 44 there’s every chance that as long as he maintains his fitness levels he can carry on with the role for another decade at least.

l Outlook Jackman doesn’t set goals in life. He thinks goals can get you going, but goals can be limiting. He says ‘We have far more ability than we give ourselves credit for. You see that in people under pressure. How does someone run a 100-meter race at the Olympics? When it’s once every 4 years, with everything they’ve done leading to that? It can’t just be adrenaline. Maybe it’s just the mind getting out of the way.” 9

Fifty shades of grey Wow, how times have changed! If you were brought up in Britain then the chances of getting anything relating to sex was restricted (unlike the rest of the continent). We had to put up with paragons of virtue like Mary Whitehouse and the 9 pm watershed. Thankfully Channel 4 came along and started to break the boundaries of showing and talking about sex. Remember the little red triangle on Channel 4 back in the 80’s to show that a film was adult orientated? The chance of seeing nakedness in some dodgy European drama guaranteed high viewing figures! All that’s over now and sex is everywhere, that’s down to the inception of the internet, and the availability of porn on tap. In the last ten years people’s sexuality has become far more open and so while the majority of men will watch porn, women have turned to other pleasures to get their thrills. In the last year or so that’s been in the form of written erotica.

Written erotica is nothing new!

10

The Marquis de Sade wrote pretty extreme stuff back in the 18th century and as he had no limits, words such as ‘sadism’ are attributed to de Sade. Others like

Anais Nin wrote ‘Delta of Venus’ and ‘Henry and June’ in the 1940’s. All were banned by the British of course. Not any more. All can be downloaded instantly through the creation of the Kindle. Up to 20% of the best sellers on the Amazon device are down to erotica alone. Keep that in mind next time you see your lady smiling to herself while reading her Kindle.

No title is more famous at the moment than ‘50 shades of Grey’. Written by E.L. James, this trilogy of books has taken the world by storm and is currently outselling Harry Potter. She must be doing something right.

So what’s all the fuss about? Originally it was written as an erotic version of ‘Twilight’, the books by Stephanie Meyer about a young woman who falls for a vampire and then a werewolf. The films aren’t much cop but I’ve been told the books are far better. Eventually people liked this ‘fan fiction’ so much that E.L. James decided to turn it into a proper book. You can see the influence of vampires at the start of the book, where young Anna has to interview Christian Grey (the vampire in his lair). But gradually it loses this theme and concentrates on their relationship which is all about him wanting her

to sign a contract so he can perform BDSM on her. BDSM means Bondage, domination and Sado Masochism, by the way. In layman’s terms he wants to tie her up and spank her arse. 50 Shades is remarkably coy considering all the fuss there is about the book. Genitalia is called erection and vagina although the word ‘f**k’ is deemed suitable. It’s also far too long and in desperate need of a good editor to cut it by a third at least. Having said that it is at least readable and you can get through it pretty quickly.

The summation of the first book ‘50 shades of Grey’ is as follows... ‘Young Virgin Anna is pushed into an interview with Christian Grey for the college magazine. Because she asks the first things that come into her mind and him being Uber rich, she intrigues him. She’s also beautiful and so he is taken by her and wants to know more. After a lot of ‘will she, won’t she’, she goes out for a night with friends and gets drunk. Christian, like the rich superhero he is, drops everything and goes to save her. If he was in a normal job he’d have a problem getting time off but hey he’s rich so no worries. He takes her home where he treats her nicely. They make a date

and he whisks her off to his apartment where he shows her his 16th century torture dungeon with whips, chains and floggers and she just melts. In normal life if you did this to a girl, you’d be arrested within the hour, but hey again Christian is rich and so gets away with it. So Anna is intrigued by this and wants to know more and so Christian whips out a contract with a load of ‘thou shalt spank my arse’ commandments on it and asks her to sign before he gives her a thorough seeing to. As an added incentive, Christian cannot control himself, they have sex several times, she flees to Atlanta for ‘space to think’ and he bonks her there too and so they get back for a weekend where he spanks her arse 6 times with a flogger and she storms out. The end.’

down to imagination and it’s been found that females like variety first and foremost, and these books give them enough stimulus to try out new things. Christian Grey is the ultimate dream boat for women and he ticks all the right boxes.

There are 2 other books after this but to be honest I’ve got better things to do with my time. As Grey and Anna are so anaemic you would get more passion from a garden snail but I had to read it. This was mainly because a certain lady friend wanted to try certain things out from the book but only until I read it! Fair play I thought. So it was a quick read and a couple of days later I got the gist. This is where us men come into it and where 50 shades (and other erotica) are such perfect openers to different sexual avenues for both male and female. Sex comes

Christian Grey... He texts his desires.

So this plants a seed of expectation for later on in the day.

He wines and dines.

He pays for everything. He takes care of everything. If he’s generous in normal life, its a subtle way of saying he’ll be generous in the bedroom.

He takes his time.

Grey knows it can take 20 minutes for a woman to be fully aroused, so he’s not resorting to wham, bam, thank-you ma’am.

He knows...

to make sure the woman is completely relaxed so females can orgasm easier.

He knows...

to speak his thoughts during sex and that they turn her on also.

He knows...

to make sure that she comes first and that he’s there to serve her. That way she’ll come back for more.

He knows...

to speak of his admiration for her body so then she can relax more as well. If she’s comfortable with her own body she’s more likely to receive and give oral sex.

By you following his lead, your lady will want to try out more of the Grey fantasies. Spanking, flogging, chains, whips you name it. All it can do is add spice to your sex life and at the end of the day, if that’s down to Christian Grey, who are we to complain? 13

Fashion & Beauty

Spring fashions

Spring brings excitement. Not just because it leads the way to the warmer weather and happier times, but it also brings with it bright colours on the fashion front. Blue, orange, yellow and green – worn on their own or matched together have each been touted as the colours of the season. If you like 1980s neon or sugary pastels, then you won’t be able to wait for the spring/ summer season. Global chic is also a favourite for the coming season with an exotic infusion of beautiful prints and patterns inspired by faraway destinations like Asia and Africa. Head scarves, colourful accessories and beaded motifs add exciting interest. Also, woven tote bags, quirky floral dresses and colourful beaded belts are all the rage. Colour, colour, colour!

Not into bright and bold colours? Not to worry as also noted on the catwalks are bold black & white. The classic colour combination will be more present than ever in the coming months. Given its popularity at Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and Moschino runway shows, we’re predicting this powerful look never goes out of style. Monochrome is so versatile and can be worn head-to-toe, à la Marc Jacobs or, for the more demure, simply by using accessories from Nicholas Kirkwood or Alexander McQueen.

14

Now for the good news! Spring and Summer trends show a plethora of relaxed, even modest, shapes: fluttering blouses and floral print trousers, easy jackets and pretty pencil skirts. Out goes the unforgiving bodycon dresses that were seen by the majority of celebrities on the red carpet and in the magazines. The retro sports look seen on soft jersey varsity bombers and denim sweat dresses continues to be extremely popular!

1001 Nights Diamond Purse The most expensive purse in the world! Price: $3.8 Million By The House of Mouawad The House of Mouawad in Dubai rolled out the most expensive purse ever made that costs an astounding $3.8 million. The bag is adorned with 4,356 colourless diamonds, 105 yellow diamonds and 56 pink ones and hence it is covered with total of 4,500 diamonds. The total weight of the diamonds is 381 karats and it set record at Guinness World of Records for being the world’s most expensive handbag. The heart-shaped purse, handcrafted from 18kt gold, has a gold chain that can be used as a cling. The bag was crafted by 10 dedicated craftsmen, who endlessly worked on this wonder for four months! 15

Pale nails are all the rage this season

The minimalist trend that has become more and more popular since last year, has now become all the rage. Neutral and cream coloured nails for spring isn’t such a shock – it’s understated and sophisticated while still being noticeable for all the right reasons. The run way shows this year have brought soft milky shades noted at Marc Jacobs, pure whites at Rag & Bone, and plenty of un-done French manicures at Chanel. This season, toning down your nail colour is the new way to play it cool and still be noticed while out and about!

Subtle

vs. Bold Make up trends this season seem to be subtle vs. bold. Major lashes and brows are obvious, however, balanced by softly smudged-in eyeliner. To get the look this season play up the features you want to draw attention to with colour - or a touch of sparkle, while keeping the rest of your look simple and glowing.

BB Creams: Substitute for Foundation?

Now that the warmer weather is starting to creep in we all need to start to rethink our makeup. Out goes the full on foundation that we mask onto our faces throughout the winter to make us look that slightly bit more human! However, when the sun is out and the temperatures rise we still need our makeup, but a lot more subtle, light weight and that invisible look that still covers all those imperfections perfectly and evens out our skin tone. But is that possible and what is on offer? Tinted moisturiser has been around for some time and while those with very few imperfections to conceal, love it for a hint of colour, great hydration and lightweight feel, especially for those summer months, others find that it does not give anywhere near enough coverage that we need for those blemishes and uneven skin tones.

So what do we do? The heavy foundation for some seems the only alternative to cover those blemishes while out and about in the sun. That was until BB creams hit the market. BB cream stands for blemish balm, blemish base or beauty balm. It is a cosmetic item that was once only sold mainly in East and Southeast Asia, however today larger beauty brands are increasingly introducing BB creams into Western markets. Originally created by dermatologists for patients who had gone through

laser skin surgery, the idea is that they actually provide genuine benefits for the skin - as well as providing enough coverage to be used as either a foundation or a primer, depending upon your preference. BB cream is promoted as an allin-one facial cosmetic product to replace serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sun block. It can be worn alone as a tinted moisturizer, over serum and moisturizer as a regular foundation, and under powder, depending on the desired amount of coverage. The cream is promoted as a multitasker, an all-in-one treatment, but Korean women mostly use it as an alternative to foundation, especially Western foundations that tend to be too heavy for their taste. The coverage is often mineral-based, and is intended to both cover and treat blemishes such as acne, sun spots and age spots. It also has anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and soothing effects.

further - with additions such as hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to regenerate skin. A tinted moisturizer only hydrates and evens out the complexion with minimal coverage; a foundation covers the skin with a layer of colour and gives it a flawless finish. BB creams go above and beyond that and moisturize, protect, and corrects flaws.

The similarity to tinted moisturisers has been noted, but BB creams are designed to go one step 17

War on Wrinkles

In the last five years, Botox has become one of the most popular youth-enhancing treatments with up to 4,000 British women having injections every month. Billed as “the lunch-time-face-lift”, the £200 injections take only minutes and, adherents claim, are relatively painless.

However, can the miracle treatment actually cause more wrinkles to form? So far, the only negatives to Botox are over injection – which causes freezing or drooping of the face – and of course being injected with one of the most deadly toxins known to man! But if it is done correctly by a skilled and qualified doctor, results are generally good. Yet ironically, it has recently been revealed that Botox may cause more wrinkles. Everyone will be amazed to learn that Botox may give you wrinkles - next to the ones it removed! Doctors are warning that the best-selling skin smoother may result in more lines appearing on the face rather than less. They have now found that other facial muscles can over compensate for the parts that have been paralysed with Botox, meaning people put more effort into frowning, creating new lines and wrinkles. So, will this put you off having the amazing beauty treatment? Probably not as the only solution to this is well, more Botox! We will destroy those wrinkles. As soon as they pop up, shoot them down again, hopefully they will soon give up and succumb to the force of paralysis. We hope!

- The pros & cons In the eighties, nearly everyone wanted a tan, to follow TV fashion and wear white trousers and shirt and walk along the beach to the sound of Miami Vice. Or was that just me? Anyways, the general consensus is that a tan looks healthy and there are indeed real health benefits as it can offer more protection from the sun. In the eighties, sunbeds were all the rage and everyone who was anyone baked themselves until they were a dark brown. Then came the skin cancer scares and sunbeds got a very bad press. But thirty years on, technology has improved and made great leaps in safety. So what do sunbeds offer us now?

awesome televisions

that you probably ca n’t afford!

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas, the focus was on recent advances in televisions. In past years, the big show-stealers have been the latest smartphones, but the excitement of 2013’s show centred around increasingly highdefinition, ridiculously large, and stupidly expensive home televisions! Here is a look at some of the amazing televisions showcased at the CES in January, which one day might be seen in your living room!

Samsung’s 85-Inch 4K ‘Floating’ Television Samsung And LG’s Curved TVs Samsung and LG both unveiled their first curved televisions, or televisions whose displays featured curved glass. The curve supposedly prevents the “fade” that humans perceive at the edges of flat screens, since the outer portions of the TV are further away from the viewer than the centre.

28

Samsung introduced its 85-inch “floating TV”. The “float” comes from how it’s mounted - the 85-inch television can be tilted or even flipped around on its stand, allowing you to view from different directions!

Panasonic’s 56-inch 4K OLED TV In Panasonic’s OLED display, the colours are saturated with deep blacks. It’s still in prototype mode, so no one has any idea when it will hit electronics stores.

Sharp’s 8K TV Prototype Sharp unveiled its 85-inch 8K TV at the show. 8K is about 16 times the resolution of normal HD!

Sony’s 56-Inch 4K OLED TV Prototype Sony debuted their 56-inch 4K OLED TV. Again, this is a prototype that we won’t be seeing on the market for a while.

Toshiba’s 84-inch 4K TV Toshiba’s already got one 4K TV on the market: the Toshiba 55ZL2. But they have now debuted another: the 84-inch version of the new L9300 series. It comes packed with features such as Wifi, noise reduction, and a 240 Hz refresh rate.

LG’s Ultra HD TVs: 55-inch, 65-inch, and 84-inch Ridiculous size? This TV, like many “smart TVs,” has an app store with approximately 1,400 apps in it - plus 3D options, Wi-Fi connectivity and a “Magic Remote.” 29

Gymnasiums Nutrition Exercise

Healthy Lifestyle

FITNESS - GETTING STARTED AT HOME The idea of gyms is all very well, but they can be expensive. There’s membership, travel costs and dress code to all fork out for and in this day and age why bother when you can exercise from the comfort of your own home and there’s no need for equipment either. So turn the telly on or your music on loud and listen to your favourite tunes when doing your exercise in private.

You can begin to get fitter by being more active around the house. Simply doing more housework gets the body moving and stretching. Also you can get outside into the garden, an enjoyable few hours gardening is a great form of exercise. Both activities involve a lot of stretching, lifting, bending up and down, and more, therefore using all your muscle groups. By doing this you not only feel good in yourself afterwards, but you can see the results of your hard work in your home and garden! 30

There are plenty of exercises which can be done at home: l Walking

l Squats

l Jog on the spot

l Pushups

Walking is an easy one and one of the most effective exercises you can do. There’s an article on the benefits of walking elsewhere in this magazine. If you don’t fancy going out for a walk in the countryside then you can always walk up and down your stairs. This tones the legs and is classed as a low impact aerobic exercise. If you have no stairs then walking around the house will still do the job.

This exercise is great for the heart. You can watch TV and football even!

l Step Exercises

Using the steps, do repetitions up an down with each leg. This will tone your leg muscles.

l Star Jumps

Star Jumps, or as the Americans call them – Jumping Jacks are another great exercise. Put your feet together and your arms down by your side. Then jump and open your legs and raise your arms above you. This is a great cardio exercise and warms you up quickly too.

l Dancing

These help the legs and buttocks and can be done simply by sitting down and standing up in a chair. Repeat. Very easy to do but also very effective if you repeat them often enough. You can then build up to doing squats without the chair. Stand with your feet shoulder-witdth apart, squat down by bending your knees, make sure you keep your back straight, and don’t lean forwards. Then go back to the upright position. Yeah sure they’re hard to begin with but after a week or so, that first 20 you did will be a breeze. If you can’t do a normal push up then build your arm strength up by doing pushups against a wall or do them on the floor but on your knees. Once the arms are strong enough you can do the normal straight legged ones.

l Weight lifting

Rather than go out and buy expensive weights, just use the heaviest objects you have to hand. Start light then build the weight. Use bags of sugar or potatoes. Water bottles are also useful.

Dancing can be a good way of exercise and By exercising at as your doing it at home, no one is going home you won’t be put off to see your embarrassing dance moves. by others, You can really party on down. Even better and as you’re comfortable you’ll be more lik if you have a games system like a wii or ely to ke ep the exercise kinetic to keep up with the game itself. up at the beginning stages Dancing is extremely good for the heart . Once you see the resu and will cheer you up no end. This then lts and the slo w change to your gives a general boost to your being. body you’ll gain enco uragement and want to do more

l Leg lifts

Build up strength and muscles in your legs. This exercise is hard to do at first especially with your legs straight, if so just bend them slightly. After a week or so, you’ll have sufficient strength to keep them straight.

l Crunches

Lay on your back and then raise your head while you raise your knees to meet it. This is brilliant for the abdominals. As long as you feel the stretching of the abdominals then you’re strengthening those muscle groups. 31

Maybe sharp words and not hard objects are what got you in this game. You got picked on so you picked up the iron. As you grew, the insults faded. Today, you’re bigger than ever. But go below the skin and there could be trouble. Muscles without strong and flexible joints, tendons and ligaments can lead to serious injury and take you out of the game. It’s easy to build a big house, but how do you reinforce a foundation you can’t see? For the past seven years, Animal Flex has been leading the pack as the #1 rated, award-winning, comprehensive joint supplement in the world. Think of it as supplemental insurance for your joints. After all, if tons of elite lifters put their faith in Animal Flex, shouldn’t you? So the next time you put it all on the line, pull yourself together and lift fearlessly.

walking

The benefits of

So it’s March and you’ve had a good Christmas and New Year. Now that January and February have passed, you wake up one early March morning, when it’s got a little warmer and you’re not covered in multiple warm clothes, you look at yourself in the mirror and go...damn! All that good living and winter hibernation has put some serious huge poundage on your belly and with the weather changing for spring you now want to start wearing summer stuff once more. With a large coat and jumper you could get away with a extra tire but you sure as hell can’t now.

So what are the options? Be one of those keen types we see on the TV who irritate the crap out of us? You know the ones ‘Oh yes, I go on a 5 mile run before breakfast’, when all you can do is stagger to the toilet and back again to bed. You could sign up for the Gym but in these hard times that can be expensive and anyway you’d be surrounded by those keen types so why go through that when you can get fit on your own. No embarrassment and no cost. Sorted.

So how is it done? Simply by walking! The health benefits are extensive.

34

Going on a regular walk for 30 minutes a day, increases your muscle strength and your stamina. Feeling tired? Go for a walk, and you’ll gain energy. Walking also improves your sleep so you can have more energy all day. It’s excellent for your heart also as it reduces blood pressure and increases blood circulation. Regular walkers have less heart attacks and strokes.

Strengthens the bones through increasing their density. Walking slows down bone loss in your legs. It also benefits the hips and your spine. When walking you are using both sides of the brain (the intuitive right and the reasoned left) and this brings mental well being. Using both sides of the brain can also help solve certain problems that you might be having. How many times have you heard the old saying ‘I’m going out to clear my head’? It’s because it works. Walking stimulates the brain and its neurons and synapses. This can stave off faltering memory for people over the age of 50 and in the long run can prevent dementia. It can also lessen depression and anxiety. Walking outside in the fresh air plus the exercise improves your mood.

Walking can also help you stop smoking. As walking improves your mood, this enhances hormones that decrease any cravings you have and so stops you thinking about smoking. A longer walk once or twice a week has been found to reduce the need for medication. Other benefits are that it prevents type 2 diabetes. If you walk for 2 and a half hours a week you can greatly reduce any risk of this form of diabetes. It reduces colon cancer as well as breast cancer in ladies. It also lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. And one of the best things about walking is that it’s safer than running. Next time you see those keen running types who stagger past you in the sun looking like their about to keel over and die, be sure to remember that with walking there’s little damage to your knees or joints, unlike running. By brisk walking you get exactly the same amount of exercise than you do with jogging. When compared to people who don’t exercise then regular walks lower the chances of cancer and arthritis. Walking increases your immune system and it also improves your sex life. Walking builds stamina and so that pays off in the bedroom. For ladies, walking improves sexual desire and satisfaction.

But we’re not doing this walking milarky for all that are we? We’re really doing it to bring our weight down and look good in the summer sun.

Walking reduces weight and fat and makes you appear healthier and therefore younger. Which can only be a good thing when you’re out and about on the Costa del Sol. Ideally if you can go for a brisk walk with a friend/friends then the time you walk will just fly by. Going with a friend also reduces any chance of tiredness from the walk as studies have shown that the pain threshold of doing a workout is greatly reduced when you exercise together. Walking (or exercising) with a friend releases more endorphins that allow you to up the stakes with your exercise routine. Music also increases your abilities with what you do as exercise but obviously doesn’t give you the same amount of motivation. The nice thing about walking is that once it becomes your exercise routine, you are far more likely to stick with it. It’s easy to drop weight training and the like but what could be simpler than a brisk walk? If at first you can’t even face going out of the house for a walk, remember that you can always do it inside at first. Walking around the house at speed and up stairs can put you into better shape and once you’re comfortable enough you can venture outside. Overall I’d definitely recommend walking. It’s free, extremely good for you and bear in mind you can always do a brisk walk to the pub! That way, you can gain energy, cheer yourself up, improve your sex life and your looks, increase ideas for any job your doing and improve your all round health completely. That can’t be bad now, can it?

Desk workers - stand up for your health: Millions may be making themselves ill by spending their working lives sitting down If you are reading this sitting down then the chances are you are also increasing your risk of developing heart disease, blood clots on the brain and even certain types of cancer. The latest evidence suggests that being seated for much of the day can also increase your risk of developing diabetes. However, standing up daily for an extra 90 minutes significantly lowers your chances of developing this serious metabolic disorder. A growing body of research is finding that sitting down for extended periods may be one of the most dangerous things we do and that the mere act of standing up – rather than doing physical exercise – is perhaps the best antidote.

Gonorrhea cases soar as STI gets more resistant to treatment Cases of gonorrhoea have soared 25 percent in a year as experts warn the disease is becoming more resistant to treatment. The spike has led to the launch of a new campaign to tackle the growing threat in England and Wales. Cases of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) jumped by a quarter in 2011 amid an emerging resistance to treatment and an absence of new therapeutic options in the last decade. Health experts are hoping the first Gonorrhoea Resistance Action Plan will increase awareness of the disease, which is the second most common bacterial STI in England.

A nation of ‘secret boozers’: English people underestimate how much alcohol they drink England is a nation of secret boozers, with more than a third of the population drinking unhealthy quantities of alcohol, new research suggests. The finding, which also uncovers high levels of binge drinking, is based on the discrepancy between alcohol sales and the amount people say they drink in surveys. International studies show that self-reported alcohol consumption only accounts for between 40 per cent and 60 per cent of sales. After taking this into account, an estimated 44 per cent of men and 31 per cent of women in England were found to be drinking more than the Royal College of Physicians’ safety guidelines for weekly alcohol consumption.

Doctors warn of the rise in

Zumba Injuries Doctors around the world say they are seeing an increase in Zumba related injuries, no doubt because more people are trying the hugely popular fitness classes. Zumba may be a great way to “party yourself into shape,” but according to a number of doctors, the wildly popular dance-fitness program may also be a good way to party yourself into pain. Zumba related injuries can range from ankle sprains, shin splints, heel spurs and plantar fasciitis to hip bursitis, muscle strains and knee problems requiring surgery. This is due to the fact that there’s so much side-to-side movement so you really need to synchronize your hips, your knees, your feet and your ankles so they’re going in the same direction. If you move in one direction and the joint doesn’t go with you in that direction, it’s a setup for injury. An email survey issued by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons got responses from doctors who say they’re regularly seeing Zumba students for ankle sprains, ankle fractures, torn meniscus, overuse injuries and more. They also say they see at least one to two Zumba related injuries a week.

Preventing Zumba Injuries Any time you have a new sports exercise craze you tend to see more injuries. People have a clear understanding of basic forms of exercise, but with some of these new forms, you don’t necessarily see that. Here are just a few tips to take on board when taking part in a Zumba class.

3

1

Wear the right shoes and avoid floors such as carpeting or hard tile. Women slip on any trainers that they think will match their outfit and don’t realise the dangers in not wearing proper shoes. Invest in proper supportive footwear. Dance shoes are a good idea because they pivot easily and there’s a lot of pivoting in Zumba.

2

3

Other ways of preventing getting injured is to avoid classes that are way too congested as people run into each other when arms and legs are getting flung around in all different directions. There are a number of new, fast paced exercise or fitness classes around today. This is due to the demand for exercising to become more fun and sociable rather than the mundane routine of jogging on a treadmill for hours. Music and dance infused exercise classes are still a great way to keep fit so don’t be discouraged. However, remember to take part wisely to avoid any unwanted mishaps!

5 Methods to curb your appetite that actually work! You may be thinking that summer is still ages way and that you have plenty of time to get into shape and lose that unwanted weight put on over the winter. Well you haven’t, as summer is only two months away as the month of May really marks the start to summer. However, without taking into account exercise, just trying to curb your appetite can be the most challenging task when trying to lose weight. It seems that when you hear the words “diet” or “weight loss” suddenly you crave everything in sight. If this sounds like you, then try out these methods to help curb your appetite and avoid the cravings!

1

Try eating a small amount every 3 or 4 hours to prevent insatiable hunger. By eating more often you are keeping your body satisfied and your mind off the snacks and wrong foods. This method will help you control hunger all day long.

2

Tea or coffee can also help to curb your appetite. The caffeine in these products is a natural appetite suppressant. But don’t overdo it on these items as you don’t want to be wired all day long. However, a cup or two when needed will help you stay away from the wrong foods and eat less so you can lose weight.

3

High protein foods help keep cravings at bay. You should eat protein with each and every meal. Foods high in protein take longer to digest and do not cause a high spike in your blood glucose levels like carbs can. Your proteins don’t always have to be from meats. For instance, pine nuts contain the highest amount of protein of any nuts or seeds and helps stimulate two hunger suppressing hormones.

4

Pick high fibre foods. Certain foods will help you feel full faster and avoid over indulging at meal time. Eat high fibre foods to help keep you full longer and control hunger. Foods like apples are great for curbing appetite as they are high in fibre, loaded with lots of nutrients and take longer to chew. This extra chewing time gives your brain time to receive the signal that you are full.

5

Another great way to help curb cravings and lose weight is exercise. When exercising, your body releases endorphins which can naturally suppress your appetite. Of course exercising does way more than this. There are many medical benefits of exercise plus you are burning fat and calories. 41

Football Manchester United v Norwich City

SATURDAY 2ND MARCH

Everton v Reading

Reading have picked themselves up a bit and at least have a fighting chance of survival from relegation. Everton are still strong despite their threadbare squad, but in seasons past Everton tended to start the season badly and get better. So if they repeat this sequence then Everton could even get a top 6 finish. For this game as it’s at Everton I only see one winner. Everton 1-0. 44

FIXTURES & PREDICTIONS

Chelsea still fancy their chances at 2nd at least and with West Brom a pale shadow of what they were at the start of the season, Chelsea as hosts must surely be favourites. West Brom haven’t got a big enough squad to compete with the big boys and as the season gets longer, injuries and the like begin to appear. Peter Odemwingie’s astonishing whoring himself to join QPR on transfer deadline day also didn’t help matters and as he’s now been sent off on loan never to be seen again, I think West Brom will probably be happy with a top ten place at the end of the season. They’ll get no points for that purpose here though. 3-0 to Chelsea.

Premiership

Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion

I can’t see Manchester United doing a ‘Devon Loch’ once more and throw it all away like they did last season. Alex Ferguson Unless they get key injuries and suffer a serious loss of form, United have got the premiership in the bag. That’ll be title number 20. An awesome achievement for Ferguson but it has to be said, the other top teams let him win this one. Chelsea have self combusted as usual and switched managers, and I have little pity for them. Arsenal have been pretty useless and Manchester City and especially their manager Roberto Mancini have been particularly woeful. All Ferguson can do is beat what they’re up against and that’s been pretty weak and tepid at times. Norwich come a calling and they’ll take a beating as well. Norwich aren’t out of the woods either yet, so they’ll at least fight. United will win though 2- 0.

Southampton v Queens Park Rangers

Both sides are fighting for survival and with Southampton looking the likelier to survive. Harry Harry Redknapp Redknapp has already done

a brilliant job by putting much needed points on the board when they looked doomed. If anyone can save QPR Harry can and there’s also the added spice as Redknapp is an old manager at Southampton too. I think both Southampton might just edge this one though. 1-0.

Stoke City v West Ham United

Two teams that are in the doldrums after bright starts meet at Stoke. Neither team has been particularly good lately and they both rely on a physical form of football. Expect a dour game with few goals. 0-0.

Sunderland v Fulham

Another two teams that are not bad but never going to set the world on fire. Fulham played pretty well against Manchester United recently and were hard done by to lose. Sunderland though are at home and will provide a stern test. I’ll go for a draw here. 1-1.

Swansea City v Newcastle United

A tale of 2 seasons. Last seasons surprise package against this seasons. Swansea are the better team but after a terrible spell Newcastle show signs of improvement after buying half of France in the January transfer window. Cheap too. Laudrup and Pardew have done fine jobs and have made both of their teams play good football. I think Swansea will edge this one 1-0.

Wigan Athletic v Liverpool

Wigan show no sign of their great escape routine and this might be their final year in the premiership. Liverpool have been playing well one moment and then useless the next but I’m assuming they hope to gain 6th and a place in Europe. Wigan are a bit of a bogey team though so this game could be a close run affair. If Wigan arrange themselves defensively, fight like demons and catch Liverpool on the break then they can get at least a point. Liverpool to sneak it though 1-2.

SUNDAY 3RD MARCH Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal

A mouth watering game and one which will decide Champions league places in the long run. Spurs have been more consistent this season and won’t go off the boil due to their manager being linked with the England job. Arsenal have been even more inconsistent and to be honest if you sell your best player to your deadliest rivals (Van Persie to Manchester United) then you deserve little sympathy. This is a derby so form goes out the window but I think Spurs are the better team and I’ll go for a 2-1 win to them.

MONDAY 4TH MARCH

SATURDAY 9TH MARCH Arsenal v Everton

An excellent match in prospect with both sides challenging for a top four slot. Arsenal are at home and are a better footballing team and Everton will fight for everything. Arsenal have been better recently after learning to adapt to the loss of Van Persie. Everton haven’t got a huge squad so are vulnerable to injuries. As it’s at the Emirates, I think Arsenal will just about have enough to win through. 2-1.

Manchester City v Wigan Athletic

Manchester City want all the points possible and I think they’ll get them against Wigan at home. Wigan I think will be relegated this season and they might be on the receiving end of a good kicking here, as City will probably realise that they’ve lost the title to their local rivals. 3-0 to City.

Newcastle United v Stoke City

Newcastle are still in need of points after a pretty poor start to the season. The inspired introduction of the cheap French buys have given them a lift and they now find themselves eyeing a top 10 finish. Stoke are a difficult side to face at the best of times and will press and harry for all the game resulting in a draw. 1-1.

Aston Villa v Manchester City

Michael Laudrup

City have blown their defence of the Premiership title but they should at least find some goals here at Villa. Easy to do when the pressures off from winning anything. Villa may be fighting for their lives and I guess have a chance at an upset but I can’t see them getting anything from this. 1-2 to City. 45

Reading v Aston Villa

Norwich City v Southampton

Rickie Lambert

Southampton will fancy their chances here as Norwich started well but have fizzled out since December. Southampton have been playing better and may have benefited from the change of manager in January, mad though it seemed at the time. Rickie Lambert has been knocking in the goals and might even be called up for England. As Lambert is 31 he might be still useful for the world cup in 2014. It’s not as if England has got an embarrassment of riches in the striker department anyway. Southampton to win 0-1.

Queens Park Rangers v Sunderland

QPR face a tough game here because Sunderland have improved and have been effective away from home. After a shaky start to the season, Martin O’Neill has turned things round and so they come to Loftus road with a certain amount of confidence. Both teams will probably cancel each other out and so I’ll go for a bore draw. 0-0.

A real relegation title fight here. A 6 pointer which will go a long way on deciding the fate of both clubs. Reading have been playing better and Villa...haven’t. Villa have better players but there seems to be unease at the club. Bent has been dropped and this may be the cause. Villa should have sold him in January and got rid of that area of discontent because if they get relegated, Bent will be sold for peanuts. Reading to win here 2-0.

West Bromwich Albion v Swansea City

Another good match between 2 teams with 2 new and exciting managers. Both have proved difficult opposition for most teams and both are looking for a top ten slot if not more. Both teams play good football and so this could be a cracking match. West Brom will fancy it as it’s at home, but Swansea are quite capable of getting a result too. I fancy West Brom to sneak it though. 1-0 to West Brom.

West Ham United v Manchester United

West Ham with Allardyce will huff and puff but eventually Rooney will score for United. I can’t remember the last time an Allardyce team beat Fergies lot and I see nothing different here. Andy Carroll will want to beat them though so keep an eye out for him. A tight game and I’ll go for a 0-1. Sam Allardyce

46

SUNDAY 10TH MARCH Fulham v Chelsea

Fulham are a strange team because at times they play well but then just lose it. This can happen in minutes. Fulham are still chasing points as well as they’re not safe from relegation yet but I can’t see any points coming here. Fulham have also been pretty poor at home and with Chelsea being pretty decent away (apart from the Southampton débâcle) then I full expect to see a Chelsea win here today. 0-2 to Chelsea.

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur

Through mismanagement and bad manager appointments, Liverpool have gone from ‘this could be our year’ to ‘I’d like to be in the top 10 please’. Spurs will fancy their chances and if Bale is on form as he has been for most of this season, Liverpool could be run ragged. Having said that, Liverpool will probably dominate possession, take the lead and then get nervous and give away a sloppy goal. I think the end result will be a draw. 2-2.

SATURDAY 16TH MARCH Aston Villa v Queens Park Rangers

6 points on offer and another game for Villa to put some distance between them and the other relegation candidates. This time QPR come visiting and I think Villa have got a good chance of some points. QPR have been good away from home though. Still see Villa just edging it though. 1-0 to Villa.

Chelsea v West Ham United Rafa Benitez

Chelsea have been good all season at Stamford Bridge and any visitor is going to have a hard time. With the wealth of talent that Chelsea have then they should go on to win this game. West Ham with Cole, Nolan and Carroll have enough to make it awkward though, and the longer the game goes on without a goal for Chelsea the higher chance of unease of the crowd, especially as they hate Rafa. Of course if they win each game these ‘supporters’ would be remarkably quiet. Chelsea to edge past the hammers. 1-0.

Everton v Manchester City

Which City will turn up at Goodison? Will Yaya Toure recover some of last seasons brilliance? Will Mancini play his most effective side? Everton at home is always a tricky match for even the best sides. If City play as they can then they can win here as Everton are beginning to get knackered and showing signs of their small squad. City to sneak a win 1-2.

Manchester United v Reading

Reading have plenty of heart and they’re fighting well to maintain their Premiership status. They’ve also got the best of goal difference in comparison to those around them so they’ll want to keep it tight and not get thrashed at Old Trafford. It might all come down to goals as it’s usually pretty tight down in the relegation zone. Bar some miracle, United will still win it though 2-0.

Southampton v Liverpool

Liverpool have been better away from home with the feeling of expectation less than at Anfield. This means they play with less fear and look like they can beat anybody. If Sturridge plays then I think he’ll score from some of the multiple chances Liverpool create. If he doesn’t play then Liverpool might be on the receiving end of further embarrassment. I see a Liverpool win here. Just. 0 -1 to Liverpool.

Daniel Sturridge

Stoke City v West Bromwich Albion

Stoke are strong at home and want to cement a top 10 finish. A win here against one of their closest rivals in the table will do a lot to help that cause. Both teams haven’t been on fire recently (despite West Broms win over Liverpool) and so this has all the hallmarks of a stalemate. Walters and Crouch might get the odd goal as well as Lukaku for West Brom. 1-1 draw.

Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham

Spurs want Champions League football and were denied it this year by Chelsea’s Champions league win. This year they want to make sure they’re in the top four again and hope Arsenal don’t go on and win it this time! Spurs have been excellent this season at home and I don’t see Fulham getting anything from this. Spurs old boy might pop up with a goal though but Spurs will still go on to win. 1-3 to Spurs.

SUNDAY 17TH MARCH Sunderland v Norwich City

Sunderland welcome a struggling Norwich to the Stadium of light and because of their positions at this stage of the season, both teams are on pretty much even terms. Sunderland are the better side with better players but Norwich are well aware of the peril they are in from relegation. Sunderland’s Fletcher has been in good form and I think he’ll extend that scoring run here today. 2-0 to Sunderland.

Swansea City v Arsenal

A must win for either side and so that sets the game up nicely. Swansea want to show that they can go from strength to strength next season under Laudrup and Arsenal are desperate to maintain the 15 year qualification for the Champions League. Both teams play good football and both have good striking talent. Arsenal have the better team but Swansea are at home so that evens things up a bit. This could be a high scoring draw. 2-2.

47

Manchester City v Newcastle United Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United

Wigan have to fight for every point now if they are to survive, which they won’t. Newcastle haven’t been great away from home but with the addition of Sissoko they at least have a better chance of scoring. Wigan have been awful at home but they may get a point here. 1-1.

Both teams haven’t reached the heights that they did last season and while City still have hope of catching Manchester United (however remote) Newcastle can only drop of challenging for a top 4 place like they did last year. As this game is at City I’ll go for a home win especially as I think the league isn’t over yet and Tevez, Aguero, Silva et al have still got a few surprises in the bag. 2-0 to Manchester City.

SATURDAY 30TH MARCH Arsenal v Reading

On paper this should be an easy win for Arsenal and I think it will be. Walcott has been sensational this season and revelling in his new central striker role that he always fancied. Fair play to the lad as he has proved himself. Wenger was reluctant at first, but Theo’s form has made his mind up. The Emirates is a nasty place to go to and with Reading being in slightly better form this will be a low scoring game. Arsenal will still nick it though. 1-0. Theo Walcott

Carlos Tevez

Sunderland v Manchester United

Manchester United will go for the jugular here and this might be the game that wins the 20th title for United. Sunderland will huff and puff but there’s no long term rivalry between the two clubs and so the desperation to stop United winning will not be there. Manchester United to sit back and let Sunderland come at them and then break on the counter. 0-2 to Manchester United.

Swansea City v Tottenham Hotspur Everton v Stoke City

Stoke will make it difficult for Everton who seek a top 6 finish and with that a Europa League place. Everton though at Goodison Park usually play out of their skins and they’ll come out with guns blazing. This may be Felliani’s last season with the Toffees as he’ll go off to richer pastures in the summer and so will want to give a good account of himself. I expect an Everton win 2-0. 48

Swansea will want to show that they can play just as good football as Spurs do. Spurs will want the points for the top 4 and to hold off Arsenal. This could be a cracking game as both teams will go for it and both teams play good football. Expect a lot of goals and Spurs to just show enough class through Bale at the end of the day. 2-4 to Spurs.

West Ham United v West Bromwich Albion

Both teams started brightly at the start of the season, but have faded in equal measure. West Ham have been pretty solid at home and West Brom a little dodgy away. They may cancel each other out and this will result in a 1-1 draw.

Wigan Athletic v Norwich City

Wigan will sigh with relief that they meet Norwich and at least have a chance of a win. It won’t be pretty and as both teams need the points at times it will be desperate. In the end the result will go with the home team 1-0 to Wigan.

SUNDAY 31ST MARCH Aston Villa v Liverpool

Villa thrashed Liverpool at Anfield, but I’d be amazed if that happened again. Liverpool have been better away and I think they’ll want to prove a point despite having lost out on a Luis Suarez Champions league place. Serious questions have to be asked about Rodgers lack of tactics and the inability to adapt his vision for the game. We can all have a vision to get our players to play like Barcelona but you have to have decent players to implement that. Suarez is one of those and though he’s been making all the right noises about staying, if a bid of 40 million plus comes in from Bayern, Barca or Real Madrid then the American owners will jump at the chance. With Carragher retiring and Gerrard one year older, I have severe doubts that if Rodgers remains Liverpool will challenge for anything, let alone fourth. Liverpool to win 0-1.

Southampton v Chelsea

Southampton have sprung quite a few surprises this season and with the arrival of Chelsea they could just do so again. Southampton have played well and been unlucky and I think have every chance of surviving in the Premiership this season. Chelsea are in good form and I would think that Rafa knows his best side by now and they’ll want to win to maintain their Champions league status next season. 0-1 to Chelsea.

MONDAY 1ST APRIL Fulham v Queens Park Rangers

Tricky game for QPR and one that might put a nail in the coffin of their Premiership survival. If QPR win though it could also suck Fulham into the mire and as Redknapp is a past master at relegation battles this could be crucial. QPR did OK in the January transfer market but I

think Redknapp wanted a few other old faces. QPR to be up for it and to win it. 1-2.

England Internationals Friday 22nd March World Cup Qualifying - Group H San Marino v England

I could talk about the team and new faces but let’s face it if we can’t beat San Marino which has a population of 30,000 which is the equivalent of Skegness, then we might as well give up football and go home. Seriously, if this isn’t 5-0 plus the rest then forget any chance of us challenging for a dramatic penalty shoot out dismissal of the quarter/semi finals in Rio in 2014. 5-0 (at least) to England.

Tuesday 26th March World Cup Qualifying - Group H Montenegro v England

In the old days you would have laughed to see Montenegro TOP of our World Cup qualification table but the times are changing I guess. It’s a tricky tie for England and as Montenegro have won 3 and drawn 1 then this game is a must win for England to get top spot in the group and therefore automatic qualification for the World Cup. Walcott and Rooney should feature as well as Sturridge, Cleverly, Wilshire, Lampard, Gerrard and the rest. On paper we should win but it’s in Montenegro and it doesn’t bear thinking about if we lose, find ourselves 5 points adrift because of some dodgy Montenegrin pitch. 0-1 to England.

49

Champions League Fixtures and Predictions TUESDAY 5TH MARCH Borussia Dortmund v Shakhtar Donetsk

Jurgen Klopp

2 good teams with Borussia having the slight edge as they have 2 away goals. I expect them to go on and win this tie as well at home and I think with those 2 advantages, Borussia will edge through. Jurgen Klopp, Borussia’s manager has been linked to several high profile jobs in England, but he’s constantly said that he will honour his contract until 2016. To me he sounds a class act and has loyalty for a contract and in this day and age, that’s a rare thing, Wengeresque almost. 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund.

Man Utd v Real Madrid

50

the managers. Mourinho fancies the Manchester United job and in many ways Ferguson sees Mourinho as heir apparent. But Fergie isn’t retiring any time soon so there will be points to be proven in this game. To close to call and I think it might end in penalties as I can see Real scoring their own away goal. 1-1 on the night. And then take your pick on penalties.

WEDNESDAY 6TH MARCH Juventus v Celtic

Celtic have had a fantastic run this season in the Champions League and have done themselves proud. It’s come to an end now though after conceding 3 in the first leg and bar a miracle of walk on water proportions, Celtic should just go out in Turin and give a good account of themselves. You never know they might even get a goal! 2-1 to Juventus.

Paris SG v Valencia

PSG have 2 away goals after the first leg and so bar a major turn around, they should add to their goal tally at home. Valencia have been good this season but they lack a little bit of class and PSG have that in spades.

David Beckham

After getting an away goal in the first leg, Manchester United will fancy their chances of proceeding to the next round. If their goalkeeper De Gea plays anywhere near as brilliantly as he did in the first leg then they’ll have every chance to do so. Real Madrid need to win here to save their season also, as they have no chance of the title with Barcelona so far ahead. So expect lots of hype in the papers from Ferguson and Mourinho which will take the pressure of their two teams and have it focused on

12th - 20th February Whether we see Beckham play for PSG this season is another matter. His wages going to charities has a darker side as PSG can then use that when they do their books in order to meet the economic Champions League fair play structure. Disappointing to hear that Beckham’s enormous gesture can be used in such a way and Beckham certainly didn’t know about it as it would have damaged his appeal. I expect PSG to win this game 2-1 and go through to the next round.

TUESDAY 12TH MARCH Barcelona v AC Milan

This should be a cracking game and I fully expect a Barca win. Barcelona have been in imperious form this season and have more or less sewn the title up by February. Balotelli has gone back to AC Milan and has already made an impact with goals and being called racist names by Milan’s Vice president. He always seems to attract controversy and I think Balotelli likes it. He can’t play in this match though as he’s cup tied by playing for Manchester City. Barcelona to win 2-0.

Schalke 04 v Galatasaray Two of the smaller teams in the Champions League meet. Schalke aren’t playing well while Galatasary top the Turkish league and with the addition of Sneijder should win through against the Germans. 1-2 to the visitors.

WEDNESDAY 13TH MARCH

Pep Guardiola

Bayern Munich v Arsenal

Bayern announced that Pep Guardiola (ex Barcelona) will take over in the summer from a wanting to stay Jupp Heynckes. Heynckes

has done a superb job and only a high profile manager like Guardiola could fill his shoes. Arsenal have been very hit and miss this season, sometimes looking brilliant and sometimes woeful. One thing they do miss is Van Persie, but any team would. I expect Bayern to go through from the 2 legs though. With the likes of Ribery, Robben and Schweinsteiger I think Bayern have a lot more experience and class. 2-1 to Bayern.

if they do well then their owner the disinterested sheikh may even stump up some cash for the team next season and they could go from strength to strength. I expect Malaga to win here 1-0 and go through to the next round.

Malaga v FC Porto

Malaga under Pellegrini continue to impress as they’re still battling for a Champions league place and they will want to firmly establish their credentials in Europe also. Pellegrini has done this despite having to sell some of their key players and

WGC Accenture World Match Play Winner

Matt Kuchar wins at the Ritz-Carlton in Arizona to take his 5th tour championship Matt Kuchar knocked off defending champion Hunter Mahan 2 and 1 in the championship match of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship to nab his first WGC title.

rizona r as the A w! e th a e w no Crazy ts hit by S course ge 52

After halving the first three holes, Kuchar went on a run where he won four holes in a five-hole span with two birdies and two pars. Mahan then won the 10th with a par and the par-5 11th with a birdie and looked like he was going to take the 12th with a tight approach to the par 3. It wasn’t meant to be, as Kuchar rolled in a mid-range birdie on top of him to squelch the momentum. Kuchar took the 13th, but surrendered the 14th and 16th to significantly tighten the match. He then kept his streak of not having a match go to the 18th hole all week alive, making a birdie from a fairway bunker on the par4 17th hole to close out Mahan. Not only was the win his first WGC title, but it was also his fifth PGA TOUR victory. While he would have eventually qualified for the PGA Championship, this clinches the berth. He’s now fully exempt on TOUR through 2017-18.

The Honda Classic Golf Tournament

Palm Beach Gardens, FL 25th February - 3rd March

The Honda Classic has been a part of the PGA Tour since the early 1970s. Although it has always been based in Florida, it wasn’t until 2007 that it moved to the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens. Today, the tournament is played on the Champion Course, the site of the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship, as well as the permanent home for the PGA Seniors’ Championship from 1982-2000. The course underwent a $4 million dollar renovation in December 2002. Created in partnership with Jack Nicklaus and the Nicklaus Design Team, the layout plays a tough 7,048 yards which generates a par of 72. The courses signature holes are 15, 16 and 17, fondly designated “The Bear Trap.”

Puerto Rico Open 4th - 10th March

The Puerto Rico Open 2013 golf tournament will once again be held at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Because of the tournaments’ relative infancy on the Pga Tour it struggles to attract the top players, and the fact it is played during the same week as the prestigious Wgc-Ca Championship means that it is always going to fall a distant second in terms of priority for the very best players on the tour. Yet it is likely to be an event that gradually gathers more interest on the tour, especially as there is a prize purse of $3.5 million on offer, with the winner receiving $630,000.

Cadillac Championship 6th - 10th March Since 1999, The World Golf Championships have brought together the best golfers in the world in a series of championships sanctioned by the International Federation of PGA Tours. In 2007, the World Golf Championships debuted at the famous TPC Blue Monster course at Doral Golf Resort & Spa Miami. The famed TPC Blue Monster Course has played host to the PGA Tour for over 50 years. In fact, virtually every great name in golf has had a moment of personal triumph at this world-class venue. Originally designed by Dick Wilson, this course provides a challenging test for the world’s best players. At 7,266 yards, both length and finesse are needed to score well on this historic course. The now named TPC Blue Monster features the famous 18th hole, a demanding par-4 that is ranked consistently as one of the Top 100 Holes in the World.

Avantha Masters

14th - 17th March

2013 Avantha Masters shifted to Jaypee Greens golf course. India’s richest golf event, the European and Asian Tour co-sanctioned Avantha Masters, has been shifted from DLF to Jaypee Greens Course this year and will be played from March 14 to 17 instead of the traditional February slot. The demanding 7,347 yards, par-72 Championship Course at Jaypee Greens Golf Course, which opened in 2000, is the only course in India designed by two-time Major Champion Greg Norman. The DLF Golf and Country Club hosted the 1.8 million euro event in 2010 (won by Andrew Dodt), 2011 (SSP Chowrasia) and 2012 (Jbe Kruger). The tournament will again be co-sanctioned by the Asian Tours and European Tour and will comprise an increased field of 156 players, with 61 provided by Asian Tour, 61 by the European Tour, 28 by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and the final six allocated to sponsor’s invitations.

Trophee Hassan II

28th - 31st March Golf du Palais Royal & De L’Ocean in Agadir, Morocco The Hassan Golf II Trophy has been in existence since 1971 but has only been recognised as part of the European Golf Tour since 2010. Boxing Frank Warren Dismissed of all Charges The US Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal by Straight-Out Promotions LLC and Chris Webb against the previous dismissal of their claims against Frank Warren and over the sale of the foreign TV rights to the fight between Mike Tyson and Danny Williams. The US District Court for the Southern District of New York had previously also dismissed a claim by Mike Tyson against Mr Warren and others over the sale of such rights. Warren said that he was ‘delighted’ to receive confirmation (i) that neither Mike Tyson nor Straight-Out Promotions LLC and Chris Webb had any claim against him and (ii) that the US Courts had accepted that he had no liability to any of them. Warren added that he would like to thank his attorney in the appeal Howard Karasik, Esq.

DeGale Set To Face Argentine Pablo Farias Promoter Hennessey Sees a “Big Year” for DeGale. The 2008 Olympic gold medallist and reigning WBC Silver super-middleweight champ James DeGale has his next fight set against 25 year old Pablo Farias of Argentina, on March 23rd in Kent. Promoter Mick Hennessey has gone on record saying he hopes his fighter will land a massive fight against the likes of Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler or Andre Ward in 2013. Speaking with The Daily Mail, Hennessey said, “This is the year when James will be chasing the big names like Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler. Froch knows what it’s like to be avoided because he could never get his dream fight with Joe Calzaghe before he retired. We are hoping he won’t do to James what Joe did to him. It’s a big year for him.

Graham Brett Jailed A former professional boxer has been jailed for seven years for killing a stranger with a single punch outside a pub. Graham Brett, 50, knocked Australian-born Neil Hannah, 49, unconscious with one punch to the jaw. He toppled backwards and suffered a brain injury and died five days later on August 7. Brett, from Pimlico, central London, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the Old Bailey. The court was told the pair had been drinking in the Greyhound pub in Pimlico when Brett took exception to Niel Hannah and called him outside. He took his glasses off and aimed a right hook at Mr.Hannah, who was described as a ‘gentle giant’. 58

Fight News A Canadian super fight between former world champions Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute is reportedly going to take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal on May 25th. InterBox (representing Bute) and GYM (representing Pascal) are hoping to finalise the deal in the coming days with HBO televising, but there appears to be a potential change in direction. A package deal for Pascal-Bute reportedly involves a guarantee of $2 million dollars to each fighter and a rematch clause - but those terms have not been confirmed.

Furniture Trends what’s new and now... We all want our home to be that perfect mix of chic yet comfy; trendy yet classic and whimsical yet elegant. This year it’s all about mixing furniture styles and attitudes for an unmistakably individual look.

62

2013 trends in home furnishings are very exciting with a broad assortment of accent colours and diverse looks that will get your creative energy going. Mixing transitional and relaxed looks with one-of-akind treasures and repurposed items is all the rage. And don’t be afraid of colour! Brightness adds beauty!

Pattern is back

Sofas and chairs are alive with colour. Among the most popular choices is floral on a white background. It’s warm and vibrant. Match a floral sofa with solid coloured accent chairs for an easy, breezy look.

Accent Chairs

White

White is wonderfully popular again as a background colour or the finish on furniture.

Office Furniture and Desks

The great thing about an accent chair is that it doesn’t have to be a huge investment. For a reasonable price you can add a whole lot of oomph to a room. Go a little wild on the pattern – maybe a dramatic black and white graphic.

Many people work at home these days and that means they need a functional and stylish desk.

Artsy Craftsy

“Artsy craftsy” is “in” too. Really beautiful handcrafted items – think folklore. Blend it with your current furniture. African and Mexican pieces also add character to a room with their rugged styling, amazing prints and pops of colour.

Walnut

And on the opposite side – walnut! Rich walnut will always look appropriate. You can never go wrong with a walnut dining room.

Beds with Storage

They’re back and better than ever. And really, who can’t use more storage?

Colour, Colour, Colour!

Neutrals are always safe, but this year brights are the rage. Maybe a red side chair? How about side tables in emerald green, the colour of the year? What about a lamp with a blue base? You don’t have to reinvent your home to be current!

Ingredients

Directions

• 1½kg floury potatoes, King Edward or Desiree are good • 500g lamb mince • 2 leeks, thinly sliced • 4 spring onions, sliced • 2 carrots, diced • 1 stick celery, diced • 1 courgette, diced • 200ml tub half-fat crème fraîche • 1 lemon, zest • 50g butter • 100ml milk • 1 bunch parsley, leaves only, chopped • 1 bunch chives, chopped

1. Heat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Boil the potatoes until tender (about 15 minutes), then drain thoroughly. 2. Meanwhile, heat a large frying pan and cook the mince, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned - unless the mince is very lean, you shouldn’t need to add any oil. Add the leek, spring onion, carrot and celery and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes, until beginning to soften. Stir in the courgette, crème fraîche and the lemon zest. Taste and season. 3. Heat the milk and 3/4 of the butter in a pan, add the potatoes and mash until smooth. Stir in the herbs and season with a little salt. Put the lamb mixture into an ovenproof dish and pile the potato on top, spreading it out to cover the meat completely. Dot with the rest of the butter and bake for 20 minutes until golden on top.

TURBO S Porsche introduces new Cayenne Turbo S with 550 hp

68

The Porsche Cayenne range is now expanded to include a Turbo S model with 550 hp, an increase of 50 hp from the Cayenne Turbo. The new Cayenne Turbo S sport utility vehicle employs advanced active chassis technologies. These technologies allow it to surpass the driving performance of many sports cars, while preserving the off-road capability, ride comfort and towing ability typical of the Cayenne. In addition to an increase of 50 horsepower compared to the Cayenne Turbo, the Cayenne Turbo S also benefits from increased engine torque, which is boosted from 516 to 553 pound-feet. This translates into faster acceleration and a higher top speed. The sprint from zero to 60 mph now takes just 4.3 seconds (-0.1 seconds), and the Cayenne Turbo S accelerates to a top track speed of 175 mph (+ 3 mph).

The Cayenne Turbo S is equipped for maximum dynamic performance. Accordingly, it incorporates chassis and drivetrain technologies, which are optional on the Cayenne Turbo. More specifically, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), and Power Steering Plus are now standard, in addition to the air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which is already standard on the Cayenne Turbo. PDCC allows for even flatter cornering, improving agility and ride comfort. PTV Plus adds torque vectoring at the rear wheels together with an electronically controlled rear differential lock, which improves traction and therefore offers more agility in a wide range of driving situations. The new Cayenne Turbo S is also equipped with the Sport Chrono package as standard, which includes an analog and digital timer located at the center of the dashboard. The performance display informs the occupants about the total driving time, lap distance covered so far and individual lap times. It also shows latitudinal and longitudinal acceleration via the TFT display in the instrument cluster. The exterior of the Cayenne Turbo S lives up to the high standards of a top model. The front air intakes and rear view mirror trim are painted in high-gloss black. The standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels with colored Porsche badges are exclusively tailored for the Cayenne Turbo S; there inside surfaces are painted in high-gloss black. The wheel arch extensions and rear spoiler separation edge are painted in exterior color. The model also features dual twin-tube sport tailpipes in polished Aluminium.

Porsche designers created an exclusive two-tone leather interior package that is available in either Black/Carrera Red or Black/Luxor Beige combinations. They feature an exclusive combination of contrasting colours and pieces that are further accented by deviated stitching throughout. Front and rear seats feature the Porsche Crest embossed on the headrests while the roof is covered in Alcantara速 from front to rear. The instrument panel, door, and centre console trim showcase the standard Carbon Fibre interior package that further complements the exclusive interior.

The Cayenne Turbo S is scheduled to go on sale in the spring of 2013, the price will vary depending on the country of sale.

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON DRIVING IN WINTER Línea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions. With respect to the car: 1. Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels. 2. Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm. 3. Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency. With respect to driving: 1. If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds. 2. If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding. 3. Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. 4. When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.
