Will Smith

With a career spanning nearly three decades Will Smith is an actor and musician who has certainly made his mark in Hollywood

Willard Christopher Smith Jr. was born in September 1968 in West Philadelphia and was raised by both parents until they split when Will was just 13; and from then on he lived primarily with his mother, who was a school administrator, after his parents’ separation. Will stated years later that although he never wanted to attend college, his mother had a friend who was the admissions officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and as he had high SAT scores he probably could have gotten into MIT easily as they ‘needed black kids’. When Will was about 17 he joined forces with producer and turntablist Jeff Townes and, with Will as the MC or Master of Ceremonies, they became known as DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. The pair became local celebrities in West Philadelphia but it was only when Clarence Holmes, or Ready Rock C, joined them as the human beat box, that the heavyweights in the music industry sat up and took notice.

The trio gained critical acclaim with their humorous songs such as Parents Just Don’t Understand, which won a Grammy in the Rap Category of the 1988 awards, and Summertime which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Although Holmes left that band in 1990, Townes and Will remain friends even now and to date DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince have sold over 5.5 million albums. With the success that came with their hits, as did the money and Will began spending it freely to the point in 1990 when he became almost bankrupt. His luck, and money, was almost up when the television network, NBC, approached him to sign a contract with a view to build a sitcom, entitled The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, about him.

The show launched Will from musician to successful actor and set the path for him to become one of the biggest and best actors in Hollywood. The show lasted for six years and was nominated for, and won, many awards. Will’s performance and acting on the show was praised and in 1993 he starred in his first motion picture Six Degrees of Separation, with Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland. Many other great roles followed, with Will becoming the actor of choice for many directors, and films such as Bad Boys, Independence Day and Men In Black catapulted the star into the A-list acting elite.

After a string of successful films under his belt, Will was approached to star as Neo in The Matrix but turned it down in favour of Wild Wild West, which didn’t exactly get rave reviews. Will later stated that Keanu Reeves was a superior choice and that he had made a mistake on Wild Wild West. Will’s status as a leading actor was restored in 2001 with the making of Ali, in which he played legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and he was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his performance. Following this he joined forces with his previous costars to make sequels to both Men In Black and Bad Boys.

More successful films were to follow with I,Robot, Hitch, I am Legend, Hancock and the first film to feature his son, Jaden, The Pursuit of Happyness. The film was based on the memoirs of Chris Gardner who documented his struggle living as a homeless man and saw Will portray Gardner and Jaden, Gardner’s son Christopher.

Will’s career has propelled him into Hollywood royalty but he is also known to be a loving family man to his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, son Jaden and daughter Willow Camille Reign, and eldest son Willard Smith III, or ‘Trey’ from his first marriage. He is also a strong follower of Democrat President Barack Obama and the pair have even discussed Will playing Obama in a biopic about the 2008 election.

His latest film, After Earth, sees the pair re-unite on the big screen once more playing a father and son who return to Earth on a special mission after humanity left 1000 years before. The film is released this month.

Jaden Smith Jaden Christopher Syre Smith was born in July 1998 to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and has been making a name for himself, aside from his famous parents, from an early age. So much so, that Will revealed Jaden asked for emancipation from his parents for his 15th birthday. Jaden has since stated that his parents taught him about responsibility without punishment from an early age and has also said that he wants to live with his parents for as long as possible but that his father has created a rule that as soon as Jaden makes a movie that’s bigger than Will’s, he must get his own house. Known as both a rapper and actor, Jaden made his major debut into the acting world in his father’s film, The Pursuit of Happyness, for

which he garnered an award for Best Breakthrough Performance at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. Next, Jaden starred in the science fiction remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still as Jacob alongside Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, John Cleese, Kathy Bates but the film didn’t receive great reviews. In 2010, he starred alongside Jackie Chan in the remake The Karate Kid playing the titular character. Will Smith produced the film and although it maintained its original title, it doesn’t actually feature karate but focuses on kung fu.

Aside from acting, Jaden has been making a name in the music and fashion industry. As a rapper he collaborated with his friend, Justin Bieber, in the song Never Say Never

and, last year he released his first mixtape The Cool Café, which also featured vocals from his sister on one song. Jaden has also recently started his own clothing and lifestyle brand called MSFTSrep with clothes including hoodies, t-shirts and trousers on offer and has also collaborated with a Korean designer Choi Bum Suk creating pop up store where customers can buy their clothes with the conjoined logos. Will and Jada have clearly impressed their work ethic onto Jaden but he does enjoy spending time with his friends as well. He and his friends have already become the next generation of stars with many of them already making names for themselves in the acting and music industries – actress/singer Selena Gomez, Kylie Jenner (sister of the Kardashian clan), Sofia Ritchie (sister of Nicole and daughter of Lionel), the acting Arias brothers, and Justin Bieber who accompanied Jaden to the New York premiere of After Earth.

It’s clear the Smith family are making their mark in the world, with critics, fans and other celebrities praising both their work and what they have achieved… Watch this space for more great movies from Will including a remake of the western film The Wild Bunch which he will also produce; while Jaden continues to follow in his father’s footsteps and make both great music and movies.

Do it YourselfTattoos

I know these are hard times, and people are cutting back on certain things but when you hear about people doing their own tattoos, then things are becoming ridiculous. It gets even worse when you hear it’s multimillionaire celebrities who are also spreading this idiocy. I mean doing your own tattoo is like taking your own teeth out or cutting your own hair in the mirror, sounds like a bad idea right? It is but I never get amazed anymore at the new ‘in thing’.

tattoos in the last year so it’s not as if he hasn’t seen some of the best in the business. The use of the DIY kit has certainly raised some eyebrows. Harry’s mum is non too impressed, begging him not to get a tattoo while on tour in Japan but at least the Japanese know what they’re doing especially ones who ink the yakuza mafia.

with badly drawn scrawls done by you or your friend? Please. 2 months down the line they’ll be full of regret.

Up until recently tattooing was always seen in a bad light, with the starts of celebrities like David Beckham and Cheryl Cole all covering their bodies with tattoos, then the young and impressionable have started to follow their idols.

16

But with this cult of celebrity and reality TV shows like Best Ink, people are really into the whole body art scene at the moment.

Quite why One Direction’s Harry Styles has been using a DIY tattoo kit is anyone’s guess.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with well drawn tattoos but covering your body permanently

Allowing his friend and fellow singer, Ed Sheeran to add to his body art. Styles has had over 30

One of her main concerns is the regret that will come later in life and the health concerns of what DIY tattooing is doing to Harry’s body right now. She reckons the ink is why harry has such bad skin and causing spots. She should spread the word as this isn’t a good selling point to acne ridden fans.

Teen idol, Justin Bieber has been at it too even inking his own tattoo artist, Bang Bang. All I can say is he must have been offered a lot of money to allow Bieber to draw a crappy mouse on him. That Bang Bang might also lose his tattoo license now is funny at least. Bang Bang has had previous allowing Rihanna, Chris Brown and Katy Perry to draw bad tattoos on him. Weird stuff.

As with anything it’s better to be safe than sorry. Tattoos look awesome if they’re done right and something that you can wear with pride. Topping them up after a decade or so and keeping them looking fresh. Scarring your body with badly drawn art that is embarrassing in later life is a serious no no, added to that the health risks, then stick to the experts, they’ll see you right.

Unprofessionally, unsterile, round the house. There are so many dangers.” And so when the likes of Bieber and Harry Styles have been doing their own tattoos their fans will also want to do so. The problem with this is that with these DIY kits, you increase the risk of getting hepatitis and TB (amongst others).

The DIY kits are often cheaper than getting a single tattoo at an established parlour. Costing around 50 Euros as a starting price, friends chip in and then can tattoo each other. The major problem (apart from hideously drawn tattoos) is that the teens are now arriving at hospital wards. Bad hygiene cause the tattoos to get infected and this can be extremely dangerous.

If you want a tattoo go to one which is established and registered. Make sure that they use clean and new needles. Watch the tattooist remove the needle and tubes from a sealed package before you get your tat. If there’s any hint of grime or dirt, leave the tattoo parlour. If they can’t be bothered to keep things clean, then they’re not going to be too bothered with the state of their needles either. That will cause infection and in the worse case scenarios, AIDS. Ideally any tattooer will wear medical gloves as well.

Veteran tattooist for 22 years, Kevin Paul, “Over the last two years I’ve become known as a celebrity tattooist. I tattoo the celebrities and then all the fans who want to copy their tattoos want to talk to me. When Harry Style’s getting his friends tattooing him at home it’s a worrying thing. I’ve got kids and I’d hate to think of my kids getting tattooed by their mates, 17

When a passion becomes a profession

As a child, Antonio always loved motorbikes. He’d spend hours in the local garage watching the mechanics at work, dreaming of the day when he would be able to buy one for himself. Many years later, Antonio’s son, Daniel, started racing when he was only 8 years old, having inherited his father’s passion for bikes. They signed-up for track days at Jerez, Almería... in fact anywhere within Andalucía they could. At just 13, Danny was racing his Dad’s CBR 600.

Over the years Danny raced in the “Campeonato Andalúz de Velocidad” and the “Campeonato/ Open de la Extremadura”, finally reaching 5th place in the overall category, alongside semiprofessionals who had their own team of mechanics, specially prepared bikes and generous sponsors. Danny only had his Dad and a few good friends who helped in any way they could.

Short hair styles are easy to maintain and one style can be worn in many different ways, with a little imaginative use of gels, sprays and other products! Not to mention the fact that they are cooler in the summer months, and let’s face it, it is easier to change short hair than long - who wants to cut off hair that you have been growing for years!?! That takes a lot of courage, but with a short style it almost beckons to be messed with and experimented on, either letting it grow a bit and cutting it into a different style, like turning shag into a pixie, or letting that bob grow out just a bit longer for a cool, great fusion look that no else has but everyone else wants when they see it on you!

Cleansing waters are a big hit at the moment but how can they work for you? Suddenly micellar (in French pronounced “me-sellaire”) waters are a bit of a trend in Canada. They originated in France and are non-rinse, soap-free cleansing waters that contain micelle molecules. Applied with a cleansing pad, they are terrific at whisking off makeup tout de suite. Some tone as well, and/or boast skin soothing ingredients such as cucumber extract.

But what are micelles? Heidi Klum and Anne Hathaway work their bums off at the gym, but when they need to look tight and toned in a pinch, trainer David Kirsch suggests his Thermo Bubbles drink packets; they “burn fat, enhance energy, and jumpstart the metabolism.” Thanks to a blend of vitamins, herbs, and minerals, a few glasses help “suppress the appetite and build lean-muscle mass.” Thermo Bubbles drink packets, €30 for 10, davidkirschwellness.com.

28

Bioderma, a French brand that claims its micellar waters were among the the first to be available at Canadian drugstores in 2007. It’s the cult favourite brand of these cleansing waters among backstage makeup artists and models, who have to quickly remove makeup between shows. The formulas are designed to cleanse the skin gently and leave it soft and soothed. “Micelles are molecules that are made of fattyacid esters,” explains Bernard Pochic, Montreal-based national trainer for Bioderma, whose micelles are of natural origin and are extracted from sugar. “When you use a cleansing pad, the

micelles deploy,” he says. The composition of the molecules makes them brilliant at trapping and gobbling up makeup, dust and pollution. Isabelle Villeneuve, director of research and development at Laboratoire Dr. Renaud, a spa brand based in Laval, Quebec sings the praises of micellars: “You don’t need water, so at night they save you time in the cleansing ritual, and they’re very convenient and good for travel.” And because they don’t need to be rinsed off, they’re well tolerated by sensitive skin that sometimes cannot tolerate even water. Dr. Renaud’s micellar—HydraPure Make-Up Removing, Cleansing and Toning Water— has been part of the brand for 18 years. (Not all brands of these cleansing waters have “micellar” in the name.) A bonus is that many are fragrance-free, and are designed to remove eye makeup, too, making them ideal for correcting makeup with a cotton swab. But it’s best to read the labels in each case, as each formula is a little different.

Who should use micellar waters and are they for everyone? If you have oily skin, a micellar water might not feel like it’s cleansing your skin enough. And they’re not necessarily designed to remove waterproof mascara easily. But if you think of those nights when you’re really tired and just want to fall into bed without going through your normal nighttime regimen, you might be glad to have a micellar on tap so you can at least easily remove your makeup.

Watch for more micellars coming to department stores near you formulated to target various skin issues.

Robert recently revealed he earned a staggering $50 million each (£32 million) from the first Avengers movie and Iron Man 3. However, he was reportedly annoyed at the fact his cast mates were paid far less, and refused to sign up to the sequel unless the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson and Mark Ruffalo were given a cash bonus. Joss Whedon is currently working on the script for The Avengers 2, with shooting to begin next March and the film expected to hit cinemas in 2015. Marvel say the sequel will feature both favourites from the first movie and new characters never seen before on the big screen. The Avengers and Iron Man 3 rank as two of the top five grossing films ever, raking in over $2.7 billion worldwide.

Supermodel Cara Delevingne and Helen Flanagan devastated by Gaz Beadle from Geordie Shore? The pair have been in contact since Cara began following him on Twitter – and he says they talk every day. Gaz said: “I get on well with her. She’s the most down-to-earth person I’ve ever met. She’ll go for McDonald’s and talk about getting smashed. “All I wanna do is have a night out with her. So next time I’m in London, it’ll happen.” Speaking at a launch party for this summer’s Wireless Festival, he added: “She’s f***ing fit. But I don’t know what’ll happen. I fancy everyone, so... ” Oh lord! Wonder how this one will turn out?

David Beckham should be the next James Bond says his wife. Victoria Beckham insists the retired footballer would be the perfect replacement for Daniel Craig once he quits.

cheating boyfriend Once again another footballer is caught cheating. You would have thought Helen Flanagan would have known better than to trust a footballer. The footie rat boyfriend of Helen Flanagan has sent a string of sexy messages to a TV star behind her back. Manchester City ace Scott Sinclair, 24, shamelessly flirted with celebrity interviewer Donatella Panayiotou, telling her: “U would look so much better with everything off” The England Under-21 winger also urged her to send sexy photos and tell him “dirty” stories. He sent the messages after apparently meeting Donatella, 29, on the yacht of ex-F1 boss Flavio Briatore during a lads’ trip to the south of France a few weeks ago. Pals say ex-Corrie star Helen, 22, is devastated by his apparent cheating. Days after first hearing the rumours she was threatened by three armed men at the couple’s rented mansion.

During a joint interview with the couple, David, 38, revealed he doesn’t share the same confidence in his big screen abilities. He said: “I have some friends who are actors – Tom Cruise is a very good friend of ours. “But I don’t think I have any plans to become an actor. I’m not sure I’d be very good at it.” However, Victoria disagreed, saying: “I think you would be really good at acting.” Turning to the interviewer, Victoria, 39, asked: “Don’t you think he’d be good at acting?

Foods boost mood! YO U R

All of the foods below have been scientifically proven to lift mood, therefore you can replace supplements and pills with one or more of these foods. If you are predisposed to depression and anxiety, you can easily prevent this provided that you understand the relationship between food and mood. Certain foods can not only boost the efficiency of anti-depressants, but they can even prevent relapse in the long run.

Berries Berries are very efficient against depression, as they are full of antioxidants that support the proper functioning of the brain and improve the cognitive function. In addition to this, berries also promote positive energy, they stimulate the production of “feelgood enzymes in the brain and they can prevent a variety of potentially fatal diseases, such as cancer. The high amount of antioxidants also prevents cell oxidation caused by free radicals, and prevent premature aging. 34

Chocolate

Avocados

Dark chocolate can improve cognitive function, it can prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia and it can also boost your mood in a matter of minutes. The darker the chocolate you consume, the better! Dark chocolate slows down the production of stress hormone, and the anxiety levels automatically decrease – moreover, chocolate also makes the brain release endorphins and also boosts the serotonin levels. This creates a feeling of well-being that lasts for several hours.

Avocados contain good, healthy fats that are known for raising the levels of dopamine and increasing endorphins.

Green Tea Green tea has been used for thousands of years due to its numerous benefits. Just like berries, green tea is also very rich in antioxidants, amino acids and L-theanine, known for reducing stress and anxiety while improving the mood.

Bananas Bananas contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals, as well as tryptophan which is known for raising serotonin levels. All the compounds found in bananas are mood boosting, and vitamin B6 converts tryptophan into serotonin, the mood-lifting hormone. This way, you will not only feel better but you will also get a better night’s sleep.

Sardines These are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, and this elevates the mood and keeps the brain healthy in the long run. Moreover, sardines also ensure the efficiency of neurotransmitters because they keep the brain cells flexible and fully functional over the years (if consumed regularly).

Poultry Just like bananas, chicken and turkey also contain high amounts of tryptophan which increase the serotonin levels. In addition to this, chicken and turkey are also very rich in tyrosine, an amino acid that helps the body cope with stress more efficiently.

Dark Leafy Greens Consuming dark leafy greens can also treat anxiety and depression due to the high amounts of acid, which elevates low mood and reduces fatigue as well. In addition to folic acid, dark leafy greens like romaine lettuce or spinach ensure the proper functioning of the nerves and muscles.

Eggs Eggs (especially egg yolk) also come in handy when you try to fight depression and improve your state of mind. Eggs are very rich in Vitamin D, and studies have revealed that Vitamin D can relieve mood disorders because it stimulates the production of serotonin in the brain.

Walnuts These not only boost mood but walnuts are known to improve cell health due to the fact that they are the richest nuts in essential fats. Only ten walnuts a day can properly optimise the cell wall composition and lower blood cholesterol levels, which will automatically improve the blood circulation, treat depression and give an overall sense of happiness and well-being. 35

Beach Training Part II

.

Get yourself out of the gym and on to the beach! Exercising outdoors is great for your well-being and can make the hard work much more enjoyable. When you are training outdoors, don’t forget if it is sunny, cover yourself up with a hat and/or some sunscreen. If it is hot, be sure to drink lots of water to stay well hydrated.

Beach Lunges

Lunges are a great exercise that not only strengthens the muscles in the lower body, but also helps to stabilise the abdominal and oblique muscles. 1. Start in a standing position, with your hands on your hips 2. Step forward with one leg and lower your body so that there is a 90 degree angle at both knees. 3. Keep your weight on your front heel and be careful not to push your knee ahead of your foot. 4. Pull your body up over the front foot and step forward for the next lunge. Repeat this action for about 6 lunges per set.

.

Beach Sprints

Sprinting on sand at the beach offers the same cardiovascular and muscle-building benefits of traditional sprints, but the uneven terrain improves strength in muscles that are specific for sprinting, according to the journal “Biology of Sport.” Sprinting also burns calories for weight control and helps keep your heart and lungs healthy, making it a good addition to your workout routine. Talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise regime. 1. Running in the sand is best done in bare feet. 2. Mark a start and finish line in the sand 20-30 meters apart 3. Crouch down facing the direction you are going to sprint 4. When ready, accelerate with long powerful strides to the finish line. Repeat 5-10 times Alternatives • You can change the starting position to lying flat, and start the sprint with a jump up and turn.

Key points to remember

• For a more demanding workout, you can do some repeated sprints, by shuttling up and back between the lines several times

• Warm up before any exercise program. At the beach, a run and some stretches is a good way to start. • Don’t step out too far, try to bend your forward leg to a 90 degree angle with each step Alternatives • You can increase the intensity of this exercise by using buckets or jugs, and filling them up with sand to make some dumbbells. • Shorter steps, and not dipping as far into the lunge will decrease the difficulty of this exercise. 37

Beach Sit-ups

1. Lie flat on your back in the sand, knees bent at right angles 2. Clasp your arms across your chest. 3. Curl up, raising your head and shoulders until your arms touch you thighs 4. Lower your head, shoulders and pelvis back down to the sand. Repeat until you have completed your set.

Getting fit, toned abs is a high priority for many of us. Unfortunately, great abs mean hard work. Sit-ups are a classic abdominal exercise, but may not be the best choice to tone and tighten your abs. Changing up your toning routine can result in improved muscle tone and work your entire core, rather than just a single muscle group. The traditional sit-up has been used to gauge fitness and tone the abdominal muscles in schools and the military.

Key points to remember • Breathe out as you curl up, breathe in as you return. • The movement must be smooth, not jerky. Alternatives Your hands may be held loosely at the side of the head, but not clasped behind the head.

Binging when upset... Could your belly fat be related to your emotions

Studies have shown that emotional eating is the numberone reason most diets fail and this normally effects women more than men. In a study published earlier this year, researchers at the Brookhaven National Laboratory had normalweight male and female volunteers fast for nearly 20 hours, then tempted them with their favourite foods. The volunteers were instructed to resist the food while imaging equipment took photos of their brain activity. The resulting scans showed that while all the volunteers could consciously suppress their hunger somewhat, the brain areas that regulate emotions and the motivation to eat were more active in the women than in the men. When you have an awful day, your brain’s production of serotonin (a neurotransmitter 46

that keeps you from feeling anxious and depressed) can drop. Studies link low levels of serotonin in women to irritability and increased appetite. To maintain its proper levels, your brain issues an order for carbohydrates, which contain the amino acid tryptophan, a building block of serotonin. That’s why, after spending an hour in traffic on the way home from

?

work or standing in a ridiculously long queue, you could murder a slice of pizza, not grilled chicken and steamed broccoli. When you do, your body pumps out more serotonin, which takes the edge off almost instantly—until your body finishes processing the carbs. Then comes the dreaded rebound, when your blood sugar plummets and you end up craving another slice.

Research has shown that the things that cause low serotonin, including exhaustion, stress, PMS, and lack of sleep and sex, hit women harder than men because women start out with about 25 percent less of the chemical, according to Robert Posner, M.D., co author of Stress Eater Diet. Are you really hungry? Probably not, though it sure feels that way. Apparently, hunger is actually the least reported reason for overeating. Low serotonin can also impair your ability to tell when you’re full, making you more likely to eat when you don’t really need to as well as more prone to overeating.

What’s more, if you do tend to eat for comfort, being low on serotonin will probably make it harder for you to resist the foods you love. That’s because dwindling levels have been linked to an increased sensitivity to reward. Therefore, emotional eaters eat not only to reduce stress but also because it feels so much better than what they’re going through. Add brain chemistry to the emotional associations formed throughout life, like getting a lollipop every time you scraped your knee, and it’s no wonder you feel helpless to resist that Big Mac.

It takes time, but you can change the way you react. That doesn’t mean you can never treat yourself. Just limit how much of a treat you allow yourself to have.

If you suffer from headaches, the reason could be surprising, and small changes throughout your day could easily prevent them occurring. Here are 7 common causes... If you drink more than two cups of coffee a day, you risk getting a withdrawal headache. Gradually cut back to one cup a day, or change to decaf.

Cradling it between your ear and your shoulder for calls lasting longer than a couple of minutes can strain your neck and lead to tension headaches. If you need your hands as you talk, use a handsfree headset, or the speaker option.

Most are made for the average 5-foot-8 man; if your chair is too big, it might not support your back, causing strain and headaches. Make sure you get a good quality chair which is adjustable to fit you. If necessary get a back support.

If your bag is heavier than 10 pounds, it could be causing neck strain, which can lead to headaches. Lighten your load by dividing the contents between two bags on opposite shoulders.

Use subdued lighting – make sure you don’t have very bright lights or any flickering fluorescent lights. Eliminate strong smells – Intense aromas of any kind irritate the trigeminal nerve, which runs from your nose to your brain and can cause headaches.

A flickering screen can create eye strain, which may lead to a headache. Buy an antiglare screen protector and every once in a while, look away from the computer to focus on an object about 20 feet from you.

Sleep even a couple of hours past your usual wake-up time and the changes in your circadian rhythms can throw off levels of brain chemicals, bringing on migraines. At weekends, get up at your normal weekday time if you can!

Interior Design

your life So you are thinking it’s time to change the colours of your life?

Starting a new decor in your house with a painting marathon could be just the thing you need. Changing the paint is a (relatively) fast and cheap way to give your house a whole new look. But the colours you choose send a message beyond a new look - and psychologists say they speak volumes about you.

Shades of red

For centuries, red has meant passion. People who are partial to shades of red, from apple and rose red to tomato and fire engine, generally are optimistic, outgoing and, well, passionate about life.

Shades of blue

Those who lean toward blue generally are calm, compassionate and follow a steady course. Reminiscent of both sky and water, shades of blue appeal to those with peaceful and quiet personalities.

52

Shades of green

Green sends out natural vibes in a big way, and people who want to be surrounded by shades of green tend to like balance and can be counted on to be civilised.

Shades of yellow

It’s a cliché that yellow is sunny, and those who pick shades of this colour for their decor tend to be sunny, too. But they go a lot deeper than that: People who love yellow also tend to be intellectual and adventurous and place a high value on freedom.

Shades of purple

From lavender to aubergine, plum and dark regal purple, shades of this mix of blue and red add drama and flair to any decor. Purple lovers are pretty dramatic themselves, and they tend to be artistic and unconventional.

Black

Renowned for both its sexiness and class, black is best used in small doses. Lovers of all things black tend to impress in an understated way and generally promote the idea that they aren’t telling all.

Shades of White

Using shades of white is a clue to a personality that finds comfort in simplicity and sees the world through a youthful, innocent lens.

Shades of orange

A space filled with shades of orange exudes vitality and cheer. The people who decorate rooms with orange hues tend to be outgoing, social and easy to be with, even if they do like to be the centre of attention.

Shades of gold

Gold, the colour of wealth, opulence and glamour -- exudes boldness with warmth and luxury. This shade also has a long, regal history, so traditionalists may opt for gold, too, providing an air of welcoming elegance.

Shades of grey

Those who decorate in all grey seek peace and tranquillity and have an eye for modern interior design. As the shade between white and black, those who decorate in grey are partial to compromise.

Shades of pink blush

Ah, pink, the colour of passion and affection. Those who decorate with pink adore attention and are often charismatic. Soft blushes offer a delicate look to a room. Pinks look best with greys and blacks.

Shades of maroon

A mature personality chooses a maroon colour palette. Less bright than red, those who decorate in this shade are generous, yet they know what they want.

Shades of brown

Love brown? Maybe you also have a stubborn streak? People who like brown prefer stability and like to be dependable for their friends and family, but they can also be obstinate. Brown decor depicts roots and helps make a room feel grounded. Find ways to complement this shade with an accent colour to avoid making the room drab.

Shades of beige

If sophistication and modern aesthetic appeal to you, but white and brown are two stark, beige is a warm neutral that’s ideal for those who seek simplicity, yet solid, earthy shade. People who decorate in beige have a lightness to their personalities and often enjoy calmness.

Shades of citron

If you blend yellow and green and let them age gracefully, that’s citron. Shades of citron suggest vitality and longevity like yellow, but also have an element of harmony and balance. This colour complements dark woods and hardwood floors. Those with citron are probably dependable, yet opinionated friends.

53

Revamp your cushions! Cushion covers can look old and worn after an extended period of use. Little fingers can leave streaks and stains, and covers occasionally need to be replaced. Maybe you fancy a change to those bland coloured cushions you have used for years. In order to use presewn cushion covers or to make your own, you need to make sure to accurately measure for a proper fit. A simple replacement of the cushion covers in your dining room, living room and outside furniture can freshen your space and make the old furniture look new again.

Things you will need: Measuring tape Pen or pencil Paper 1. Unzip the cushions from any existing covering. If the seams are sewn together and cannot be unzipped or unbuttoned, keep the thickness of the existing cover in mind when writing down measurements. For the most accurate fit, try to strip the cushion as bare as possible.

2. Lay the cushion on a large flat surface, such as a counter or the floor. Be sure the area is clean before placing the cushion without the cover on the surface. 3. Measure the sides of the cushion. Use a fabric tape measure, a measuring tape that is flexible to ensure the most accurate measurements. Measure the height, width and depth of the cushion in inches. 4. Add 1 inch to each measurement. This allowance accounts for ease and any seam tucks that will need to be made. 5. Write down measurements for future reference.

Ingredients

Directions

• 3 tbsp olive oil • 4 tuna steaks, about 140g/5oz each

1. Put the oil into a food bag and add the tuna steaks. Rub well together and leave for 30 mins while you make the relish. Peel the cucumber, halve lengthways and scoop out the seeds. Chop the flesh into a small dice. Mix with the rest of the ingredients, seasoning to taste. Set aside.

For the relish: • ½ cucumber • 2 spring onions, finely chopped • 1 medium tomato, finely chopped • ½ large red chilli, seeded and finely chopped • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp chopped parsley • 1 tbsp lime or lemon juice

2. To griddle: heat the pan to hot, then cook the steaks, turning after 2 mins, and cooking for another 2 mins each side depending on the thickness of the steaks. Meaty fish is best served slightly ‘pink’. Remove the steaks from the heat allow to stand for 3-5 mins, then spoon over the relish and serve. To BBQ: When the grill is ready to cook, remove the fish from the bag, dabbing off excess oil. Season and cook for barely 2 mins each side.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class With the three engineering priorities “Intelligent Drive”, “Efficient Technology” and “Essence of Luxury”, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class extends the boundaries of technology on many levels. The S-Class is not just a technological spearhead for Mercedes-Benz but for automotive development as a whole. As with every generation before it, the customers expect the new S-Class to set standards across the board to retain its accolade as “the best automobile in the world”. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were ‘the best or

66

nothing’ in every respect. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class.” Perfection to the last detail results in “The Essence of Luxury”. This pursuit of the best is particularly noticeable in the interior: whether it is the seats or the air conditioning, the controls or the design, the

infotainment or the comfort and safety in the rear new ideas, their painstaking realisation, and highest perceived quality underpin the high standards that the engineers have set for the Mercedes-Benz flagship model - and for themselves. The same applies to safety. What started with PRESAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS has now resulted in a new dimension of motoring: comfort and safety are merged into one. Mercedes-Benz refers to this as “Intelligent Drive”. A whole host of new systems makes the new S-Class even more comfortable and even safer. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is so efficient that it almost sounds utopian: within ten years MercedesBenz, by realising “Efficient Technology”, has almost halved fuel consumption in the 150 kW output category to 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres, for example, while the drag coefficient of the new S-Class (cd=0.24) clearly undercuts the previous model’s figure and sets a new benchmark in this segment. The S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is set to go even lower still with a cd figure of 0.23 thanks to additional aerodynamic optimisation measures. Furthermore, the new model is the world’s first car to dispense entirely with light bulbs in favour of LEDs, pointing the way ahead once again.

Design: a modern sense of status and sensual shapes People all over the world can recognise a MercedesBenz straight away. The classic Mercedes face runs like a golden thread through the brand’s history.

The sophisticated design of the S-Class has always been an expression of luxury and automotive grandeur of its era. The new S-Class continues this tradition. With its classic architecture and flowing silhouette, it is a modern embodiment of sensual clarity. The design draws a line from the sophisticated, progressive design idiom to the classic elegance of our 1930s cars - intelligence that speaks to the emotions. Stylish sportiness and sensual forms in synthesis with timeless clarity and effortless superiority make the S-Class a true design icon.

LED technology: the first ever car without a single light bulb 100 years or so after the introduction of electric lighting in motor vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is now making a complete switch to LED technology - the new S-Class is the first vehicle in the world whose interior and exterior do without a single light bulb, and sees Mercedes-Benz building on its pioneering role in the lighting sector. The lighting’s multilevel functionality is another world first: out of consideration for any road users behind, the intensity of the brake lights is reduced at night or while waiting at traffic lights, for example. Almost 500 LEDs illuminate the road, the vehicle, the interior and the boot. Depending on equipment, these include: l Headlamps: each with up to 56 LEDs ail lights: each with up to 35 LEDs l T (plus 4 for the rear fog lamp) l I nterior (including ambient lighting): approx. 300 LEDs Visibility is enhanced by two assistance systems that have undergone some key improvements - Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. Thanks to a new stereo camera and multistage radar sensors, the S-Class has 360-degree all-round vision and detects potential dangers on the road better.

Drive system: class-leading efficiency in every output category In its first year the new S-Class line-up features two hybrid versions, a petrol model and a diesel variant: S 400 HYBRID, S 500, S 350 BlueTEC and S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID. All models boast class-leading efficiency and up to 20 percent lower fuel consumption than the outgoing model series. All the engines already meet the requirements of the Euro-6 emissions standard. In addition to this, the S 400 HYBRID and S 350 BlueTEC meet the strict criteria of efficiency class A, while the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID even has an A+ rating.

Suspension: the world’s first suspension with “eyes” The new S-Class is the world’s first car to be able to detect bumps on the road ahead. If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects such unevenness by means of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL instantaneously sets up the suspension to deal with the new situation. This innovative suspension system is available as an option for the eight-cylinder models. Standard equipment for the new S-Class includes the continuously operating Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS and an enhanced version of the full air suspension system AIRMATIC.

Interior: visual breadth and calm solidity With its clear architecture, the interior design of the S-Class embodies a classic, superior, cutting-edge saloon. The interior’s expressive character derives from a uniquely fluid, sensuously elegant style. Horizontal elements and lines create a setting characterised by visual breadth and calm solidity. High quality and elegance harmonise with clarity and functionality: the interior design of the S-Class combines ride comfort, spaciousness and user-friendliness to the very highest standard.

Conclusion: The S Class Mercedes is truly an incredible car. It was once said that if you want to see the future of the automobile then take a look at the S Class when they launch a new model. The new functions which are on this car will eventually be launched across many companies range of vehicles. So be ahead of the rest and grab yourself the new S Class soon to be released, you won’t be disappointed.

The beat 106FM guide to this summer’s hottest and finest music festivals across Europe! There is no escaping it, summer is here, and what comes with summer? Well, yes of course – girls in bikinis and the odd BBQ or two, but forget about that peeps – it’s festival time, and you get all of that and a lot more when you are at any of the festivals this year and some of them are going to be absolutely rocking! Glastonbury, the all time great, has just been and gone and was enjoyed by many! Headliners included The Rolling Stones, Mumford and Sons, Chase and Status, Proffesor Green, Public Enemy, Portishead and many many more. But there are more up coming festivals you can get to...

Benicassim First on my agenda has to be Benicassim as it is here in Spain and some of the best bands on the planet will be playing! Headliners include The Killers, Primal Scream, Queens of the Stone Age, Artic monkeys, Bastille, Rizzle Kicks, Dizzy Rascal and many more. Benicassim is held on the east coast of Spain between Valencia and Barcelona and takes place on the weekend of 18th to 21st July.

Global Gathering Global Gathering: I have been there but remember nothing of it, although there is photographic evidence to prove that I thoroughly enjoyed myself, so I have to say it is the best dance festival by far! Headliners include Plan B, Rudimental, Disclosure, Paul Oakenfold, Dj Fresh, Shy Fx, Example, Carl cox, Sasha and many more. Global Gathering will be held at Long Marston Airfield in Stratford Upon Avon on 26th & 27th July. I hope this gives you some kind of idea of the amazing music being played around Europe (so be a part of it guys) Written By Gareth Warlow aka Beat Boy 74

English Premiership – Closed Season So we’re in July and let’s face it, we’re all bored to tears. No World Cup, no European Championships, we might even have to resort to watching...well anything basically. We’ll become experts in Wimbledon, religiously watch the games and for the rest of the year never even think about Tennis. There will be the Ashes, the British Lions down under, hell, we may even have got into a bit of the Tour de France but nothing comes close to our first love, aka football. Thankfully this closed season is shaping up to be one of the most interesting in decades. So many of the top clubs are changing their managers that it might be a while before new formations and new ideas takes shape at these top clubs.

the past 26 years. With no Fergie time, no influencing referees and no media favouritism it will be interesting to see how many points are dropped during the season.

David Moyes has taken over from Fergie at MANCHESTER UNITED and will hope that he can continue the success. With an aging squad and talk of Rooney, Nani and Hernandez wanting to leave, then it might take time for Moyes to get United back into shape. He’ll bring Felliani and a few others because he’ll need to. Giggs (40), Ferdinand (36) and Evra and Carrick (32) aren’t getting any younger. With no Fergie at the helm, the team might just find it a lot tougher than for

MANCHESTER CITY were going to sack Roberto Mancini before the FA Cup final, which seriously affected the mood of the camp. That may be the reason why the team just didn’t turn up allowing Wigan to sneak it at the death. In comes Manuel Pelligrini, from Malaga, and before

that, Real Madrid and Villareal. Pelligrini is a very good coach and as long as he learns English quickly, ideally over the summer, then he could hit the ground running. His teams play good football and anyone watching Malaga for the last 2 seasons and before that, the Real Madrid teams and Villareal ones, then City fans could be in for a treat. Was it right to sack Mancini? Probably. But the arab owners need to learn a bit of tact because it can affect the team and that in turn affects results. Despite winning the Premiership last season, Mancini came up with some odd tactics during this one. His patience with the brilliant but mad Balotelli, affected team morale until they sold him in January, his strange substitutions throughout the season seemed more about proving a point than winning games. End result, he let Manchester United walk the league with a weaker squad. City will be stronger with Pelligrini at the helm.

ARSENAL started badly last season but slowly got better and better and were well worth their top 4th position (for the 16th year in a row under Wenger). With a couple of good buys in the summer, Wenger is canny enough to challenge again for the title. That’s if he stops selling his best players to his nearest rivals that is.

and made them the kings of Merseyside (above Liverpool) for the last 2 years running. But with Moyes, Baines and Felliani leaving then they may struggle to get in the top ten in the future. The man to take over is Roberto Martinez who guided Wigan to the Fa Cup and er...relegation. He’s regarded as a good coach but I have my doubts that he can steer Everton to previous heights. And then comes LIVERPOOL. Rated number one in Europe 4 years ago and now nowhere near it this season. Manager Brendan Rodgers has a lot to prove and if he doesn’t bring signs of promise in the first months of the year, he may find himself surplus to requirements. Suarez will go this summer and if Rodgers can’t find replacements, then don’t expect a challenge for any cups next season either. WEST BROM should strengthen next season under Steve Clarke and SWANSEA should do the same with Michael Laurdrup.

And as for the rest?

CHELSEA welcome back the ‘Special One’. Jose Mourinho returns to the space vacated by Rafa Benitez who won the Europa League Cup in May. There is an insane amount of expectation with the return of Mourinho and whether he can repeat his success. Whether he’ll last a season if he doesn’t bring success, remains to be seen. If he spends a lot then he might be able to take advantage of the rest of the rivals around him.

SPURS just missed out on the Champions League places, and with that, any chance of keeping Gareth Bale next season. Baleless but with 60-odd million in the pocket, Spurs can strengthen their squad, but no one will fill the boots of Bale.

STOKE might improve under Mark Hughes brought in for the sacked Tony Pulis, but Hughes was awful at QPR so the juries out on that one. WEST HAM should buy Andy Carroll for peanuts and might improve a few places. NORWICH, SOUTHAMPTON, FULHAM, VILLA and SUNDERLAND will flirt with relegation and newcomers CARDIFF, HULL and CRYSTAL PALACE face a tough job to not go straight back down. All in all, it will come down to the managers. If they buy well and with the right balance to their teams then you will see surprises and you will see disappointments.

What does the future hold for EVERTON? David Moyes did wonders with a limited budget

The 2013-2014 Season might be a vintage year for surprises! 79

Golovkin Vs Macklin

On June 29th, 2013, Marbella’s finest, Matthew Mackin (29 wins, 4 losses, 20 KO’s) faced defending WBA/WBO Gennady Golovkin (26 wins 0 Losses 23 KO’s) at the MGM Grand Theatre in Connecticut. The scary looking German, Gennady Golovkin, met Marbella’s finest Matthew Macklin. Macklin predicted war and a KO against the German who just happened to hold the highest KO ratio in middleweight history (124 years). Some critics had feared that the Golovkin fight meant that Macklin was out of his league, but others had serious doubts over Golovkin as he has yet to face a serious Middleweight contender. Those doubting Golovkin were silenced tonight. The fight started well for Macklin as he avoided many of the Germans power shots but as the round progressed the sounds of Golovkin’s blows hitting Macklin said it all. Macklin had said that he thought previous foe and current Middleweight champ, Martinez was a better fighter. Tonight though, Golovkin showed his class with incredible power shots and great footwork. The first 2 rounds went the German’s way and he was leading 20-18 and at the end of the second, Macklin had a bleeding cut above the left eye. In the third though, Macklin didn’t avoid one of Golovkins power shots, a left hook to the body and he went down

80

and never got up again. Mackin is a fighter who never gives up and for him not to get up showed the class of the Germans blow. It was Golovkins 14th consecutive KO. Macklin gave due credit to the German saying that he was the toughest fighter he’d ever fought. “He never really let me get started,” Macklin said. “It was a great shot he landed. I tip my hat to him. He’s a great champion. He has plenty of clubbing, solid power, and you can feel the weight of every punch he throws.” So whats next for Golovkin? The obvious fight would be against Sergio Martinez to unify the belts, but Martinez had been injured and is not expected to fight again til 2014. Golovkin is certainly up for the challenge. “I want to fight again very soon,” Golovkin said. “I want to fight any belt-holder, any champion, and any top fighter, anywhere.” And as for Matthew Macklin? What happens now? He’ll keep battling, and with his desire and determination he’ll want another shot at the middleweight crown.
