Nicole Scherzinger Born in June 1978, Nicole Prescovia Elikolani Valiente in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nicole Scherzinger was born to a father of Filipino descent and a mother who is half Russian and half Hawaiian. Although her parents split when she was a baby, Nicole had a good upbringing with her maternal side of the family who moved to Kentucky when she was six. Her mother remarried a German American named Gary Scherzinger and Nicole took his surname after he adopted her. The singer had a love of music from an early age and has since stated that although her family did not have a lot of money; it is with her mother’s love and support that she has become successful. Scherzinger attended the Youth Performing Arts School at a young age and soon began performing with the Actors Theatre of Louisville, showing a talent and flair that is present in her endeavours today. Even as a teenager in 1996, she was the first runner-up at the Kentucky State Fair’s Coca-Cola Talent Classic contest. 6
Following Performing Arts School, Nicole headed to college where she majored in musical theatre, taking the lead roles in both Chicago and Show Boat. During her time at college she began singing for the rock band Days of the New, but after two years and some creative differences with the band, she left. In 2001, Scherzinger auditioned for the reality television show Popstars, performing Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You which got rave reviews from the judges. She, and four other girls, won a part in the band Eden’s Crush which was created from the show and the group went on to have a top 10 hit as well as touring with N’Sync and Jessica Simpson.
During this time, Will.I.Am approached Scherzinger to become a member of his band The Black Eyed Peas as the lead singer, but boyfriend at the time, who was also a singer, told her to decline as he wanted to make her a solo star. Fergie later took the position with The Black Eyed Peas. Later that same year, Eden Crush’s record company went bankrupt forcing the band to split and the girls all parted ways. Fearful not to come out of the spotlight, Nicole performed under the stage name Nicole Kea, recording music for the film 50 First Dates as well as singing with Japanese rock band Yoshiki and the Tokyo Symphonic Orchestra. In 2003, Nicole joined the burlesque troupe The Pussycat Dolls, when they were re-cast as recording artists alongside Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt. Her first songs with the band were for the movie soundtracks for Shark Tale and Shall We Dance and in September 2005 the group released their first album PCD which combined their burlesque style and a dance-pop sound. The album did very well making the top 10 in the US, Canada, the UK and many other European countries. Since the album’s release it has sold 10 million copies worldwide. The first single from the album Don’t Cha became number one in many countries and became one of the best-selling singles of all time with over six million sold.
After the success of the album the group toured with both Christina Aguilera and The Black Eyed Peas and were also nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group. Their second album was released in 2008 and it’s success lead the girls to begin their Doll Domination world tour in early 2009. They were supported in the UK leg by both Lady Gaga and Ne-Yo. 7
8
In 2010 Nicole decided to leave the group to pursue a solo career and, as she had featured on many other artists’ songs during her time with the Pussycat Dolls, she was known for her strong solo voice. However, her first foray on her solo career did not fare very well with both the debut and second single failing to reach the top 20 in the Billboard charts. It was at her request that the album, Her Name is Nicole, was eventually shelved and Nicole took a break from singing. Already known for her dancing talent from The Pussycat Dolls, it was also in 2010 that she became a contestant on the 10th season of Dancing With the Stars. Partnered with talented dancer Derek Hough, Nicole later went on to win the show which re-boosted her career and status in the US. Later that year she took a guest judge spot on The X Factor in the UK and has since been credited with the formation of the boy band One Direction - it was her idea to put them together.
She returned to The X Factor during the live shows where she performed her debut single from her album Killer Love which was well received by the viewing public and peaked at number 3 in the UK charts.
With the success of her guest judging on The X Factor UK, Nicole was signed up to join the judging panel for The X Factor US in the first season in 2011. She also released Killer Love in the US during this time and enjoyed much success there with the album. It was when shooting the video for one of the singles on the album, Try With Me, that Nicole and her team were held hostage by a local gun wielding gang in the Xilitla rainforest in Mexico – luckily they were let go unharmed. After one series Nicole left The X Factor US to undertake her first solo tour, but she missed her judging role and later signed onto The X Factor UK with a £750,000 contract for the 9th series. She mentored the boys category and was the first mentor ever to see all of her group in the final, with two acts coming runner-up and winner that year. Pleased with her success Nicole was offered another contract to be on the judging panel this year and will receive a pay rise of £1.5 million.
Her second single in the UK, Don’t Hold Your Breath topped the charts giving Nicole her first solo number 1. 9

Aside from music, Nicole has made her mark on television and on the big screen - featuring in How I Met Your Mother and My Wife and Kids as well as the films, Love Don’t Cost a Thing and Men In Black 3.
Nicole has also contributed a lot to various charities and alongside many other things, has lent her voice to the charity single for Help For Haiti 2010, has participated in many Comic Relief events, and has contributed to human trafficking charities. She has also spent much time in the pages of newspapers and magazines due to her high profile relationship with F1 driver Lewis Hamilton. The pair began dating in 2008 but split in 2010, only to get back together in 2011. However, the pair finally called it a day in July of this year.
Nicole has steadily but surely made her mark in the music industry and will undoubtedly continue to do for years to come. Although over the next few months she will be using her mentoring skills on The X Factor, a new single and perhaps album will certainly be hitting the charts soon. 11
Live
The Rat Pack Live – with a vocal and visual delivery that has to be seen and heard to be believed, Martin Joseph (Frank Sinatra), Dave Lee (Dean Martin) and Thomas Henry (Sammy Davis Jnr) effortlessly recreate the style, elegance and “pizzazz” of the las Vegas “Rat Pack” era.
The Rat Pack Live show has been wowing crowds for the past five years at high-quality venues, and events throughout Europe. For the most authentic reproduction of the three biggest Las Vegas Legends, look no further! Check out their website for a full listing of where they are performing along the coast. Lifestyle Magazine brings you an interview with Dave, Martin and Tommy... show was coming to a close and formed a new show with our present line-up. We are all from different backgrounds and so it’s quite a coincidence that we all ended up together.
What kind of music do you listen to today?
When did you first start singing?
Dave: I first started singing in the school choir when I was 10 years old but came from a very musical family. Consequently I was surrounded by music from birth. By the age of 15 I had my own pop group and was learning to play guitar. Martin: I sang as a teenager in bands but then didn’t sing for about 25 years when I started performing as Frank in 1998.
Tommy: I have been in the entertainment business for most of my life. After having enjoyed some success in the record industry in the early nineties, I went on to play Prince in the Purple Reign Tribute, which successfully toured for 8 years in the UK, Germany and Spain.
How did you get started as a group? We came together about 5 years ago as a previous Rat Pack
Dave: I like all kinds of music…. pop, classical, standards, and jazz. Martin: Anything good! I still listen to Frank a lot, as a) it’s great music and b) I don’t like to “drift away” from the original phrasing and delivery – it has to sound right! Tommy: Soul, R & B and Funk.
Before coming to Spain, where did you perform?
Dave: I have performed all over the world in various types of venues… UK, America, Dubai, philippines, Germany and Europe in general. My greatest fulfilment was working with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra on the Royal Variety show at the London Palladium.
Martin: England, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the USA – in Palm Springs, Las Vegas and New York. Tommy: All over Europe
tremendously talented brothers from Malaga – Jesus & Paco Leon. The first single is “Different Worlds” – look out for it, it’s going to be big!
Where was the first place (Spain or, restaurant or bar, etc) that you ever performed as a group?
Our first gig together was at the Atalaya Park Hotel in Benahavis with the Marbella Big Band.
Where do you perform weekly on the coast?
As well as our European gigs, we play anywhere from Gibraltar to Nerja. Our monthly performances are too numerous to list here – but you can get a full gig listing on our web site: www.theratpacklive.com
What music can’t you stand to listen to? Dave: C…rap and house and electronic garbage. Martin: House/Garage etc – anything that sounds like someone has their finger stuck in a drum machine! You listen to Cole Porter’s lyrics and Nelson Riddle’s arrangements and you understand why this music stands the test of time and will last forever. Tommy: Anything without soul.
Who are your inspirations?
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
Dave: If I wasn’t singing I would be playing golf or dead… singing is my life Martin: I would be a helicopter pilot (OK I made that bit up!) Tommy: Is there anything else other than singing?
Dave: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Matt Monroe, Pavarotti. Martin: Frank Sinatra, Matt Monroe, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt Tommy: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Prince
What interests do you have apart from singing? Dave: Playing golf, DIY and travelling. Martin: Cooking, travelling, writing – everything creative. I am totally the wrong guy for gardening and DIY! Tommy: Sleeping and being late (Martin & Dave wrote that!) Real Tommy: Writing music – I am currently finishing an album of my own music with two
Who are your favourite bands/singers?
Dave: Take That, Drifters, Luther Van Dross Martin: Stevie Wonder, Michael Macdonald, Del Amitri, Eagles Tommy: Earth Wind & Fire, Isley Brothers
What do you think about when your performing?
Dave: When your performing you have to think about the way the show is going, the audience reaction, the lyrics, most important the way you come over to the audience as a tribute artiste. It must be as authentic as possible. Martin: Audience contact and delivery – the song’s meaning, you have to feel it and they have to feel it. Curiously we rarely think about what each other is doing – the show is now so polished we just play our own parts. Tommy: I think about Sammy Davis – posture, performance and energy, energy, energy.
What is coming up for you in the future?
We are very excited about our up-coming 5-date tour in Ireland, starting on 23rd October. We play the first night in an amazing burlesque cabaret club in Belfast called AM/PM and then we head to Dublin for 4 nights culminating in the Royal Hotel, Bray on Sunday 27th. We played there in March on St Patrick’s Day and it was amazing! We also may be heading to Dubai over the Christmas period and we have interest from several cruise companies for the January to April period next year. It’s all good – we’re livin’ it and lovin’ it!
Frank Skott Frank Skott is an R&B singer-songwriter who lives in Casares, here on the coast. He started his professional singing career in 2000, and has performed all over the world since then. The summer is prime show time, and Frank is performing so much at the moment that studio time is hard to come by, but his third album is currently underway! Frank is currently looking for more venues, for now you can see him at: Saturdays: Frank Skott ‘Live & Loungin’ at the Robin Hood Inn, Estepona. 8.30pm. Sundays: Frank Flavour Sundays at Nufluid, Elviria. 8.00pm.
What is your full name?
My full name is Francis Peter Skott Noakes. I guess you can see now why Frank Skott is easier!
Do you have a stage name? No. Just my name. I did try calling myself Skott Francis a while back, but it doesn’t take you too long to realise that, when you’re unsigned, it doesn’t really matter what you call yourself.
Where are you originally from?
Norway and Denmark and Scotland. And Spain, of course. And with luck, I haven’t finished yet!
When did you first start singing?
I was very young, I remember that. But professionally, I started out in 2000, so this will be my 14th year as a singer/songwriter.
How did you get started in this profession?
I think singing is something you just know you want to do, and you have to be that clear in your convictions because it’s not easy. I came out of Uni, and immediately put some demos together for an EPK, which got me started with my first manager.
I was born in Denmark to a Danish mum and a Spanish dad.
How long have you lived in Spain?
Most of my life, with frequent and sometimes very long periods away.
Where else in the world have you preformed?
The Isle Of Man, Costa Rica, the USA, England, France, Sweden, 14
Before coming to Spain, where did you live and perform?
I started out on the working men’s club circuit in the north of England before I got signed to Universal in 2005. After that whole ordeal, I came back to Spain to live and also perform, but still carried on travelling.
Where was the first place you sang, in the UK and here in Spain?
In the UK, I remember my first gig being at the local working men’s club in the village of Silsden, near Leeds. And here in Spain, I think it was the Los Naranjos Golf Club on the Costa Del Sol. Two very different venues, I assure you! There’s no rhyme or reason which dictates the venues you can find yourself in. And no telling what can happen. It’s part of what I love about the job.
Have you ever tried a talent competition like X factor?
Where else have you lived? Are you ready? South Africa, the Isle Of Man, Los Angeles, England, Northern Ireland and France. I guess I´m a nomad. I can’t help it!
sister Janet. BoyzIIMen, Jazmine Sullivan, Usher, Jamie Woon, D’Angelo, Angie Stone, etc etc.
What kind of music do you listen to today?
Pretty much nothing but RnB and some of the old Soul legends. Stevie Wonder and Babyface are two of my favourites, along with Michael Jackson and his
I did try the one in London once. I’ll be honest, I just lost patience. I’d been at the first round at the O2 centre since 5.30am. and by 8.30pm there were still about 6000 people ahead of me. I just got fed up and hungry and left. I didn’t like what I saw either. But hey, that’s television I guess.
Would you consider going on one?
Who are your favourite bands/singers?
I might try The Voice. I think that one is for people who aren’t afraid to admit they take what they do seriously. I don’t know though. We’ll see.
Where do you perform weekly on the coast?
At the moment I can be found every Saturday evening at the Robin Hood Inn, between Guadalmina and Estepona, from 8.30pm. And then I’m at Nufluid in Elviria, right opposite the Don Carlos Hotel, and that one starts at 8pm. There should be more coming up in September. This coast is still getting used to RnB music, so it’s taking a while, but I’m getting there.
What is your Facebook page?
Well, there’s my personal one and my band page. I guess you just type my name in the Facebook search bar and both will show up! Beware of clones though! My band page has more info about me as a singer, as well as some songs available for downloading.
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
As a kid I wanted to be a game ranger in Africa somewhere, looking after millions of acres of wild land with nothing more than a plane, a LandRover and a rifle. Chasing off poachers, falling asleep to the sounds of the savannah. Looking at it now, I’m also glad I can sing!
What interests do you have apart from singing?
Well, obviously there’s the writing and recording side of it all. I love all that stuff, it’s very hard to get me out of the studio, or to get me to leave when there’s a writing session going on and grooves are jumping out all over the place. Then there’s the fitness training. And driving is another great passion of mine. I have a great interest in eating huge
amounts of food as well. I like reading, watching movies, all the usual stuff. And I love having a get together in the kitchen with friends, and just talking crap and eating good food and having a good time. I left all the mad extreme stuff behind, I’m trying to be a grown up now.
Do you play any instruments?
I’d say just enough basic keyboard and guitar to rough out a basic song structure. Nothing more than that.
What genre of music can’t you stand to listen to? Or sing?
I guess all that Screamo, thrash metal, mosh pit madness isn’t my favourite. Or that seriously empty computer generated house music you hear for hours on end these days. Or some really heavy operas. But I can appreciate the musicianship involved in all of them.
Who are your inspirations? Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, first and foremost. Whatever happened, those two between them have changed music in more ways than can be imagined. And Usher and Jazmine Sullivan who I think, personally, are the best male and female vocalists alive today.
Stevie, Michael, Jazmine, Usher, Beyonce and James Arthur, to start with. Bands, I’m not too sure of. I like some of the Kings Of Leon stuff, they just have something about their songwriting that I love, and I like the singers’ voice. Oh, and I think Pink has a good voice. D’Angelo is one of my favourite all rounders of all time. He plays like four hundred instruments, writes, produces and performs pretty much everything he does, and some of his songs are pretty much perfect. He’s still not touching Stevie Wonder, but he’s close.
What do you think about when your performing?
I try to put myself inside each and every song when I’m singing them. It’s a nice way to pass the gig, to take yourself through the same emotional journey you’re taking the audience through.
What else can we expect from you in the future?
Right now I’m working on my 3rd album, which I’m really excited about. And just continuing promoting the first 2 albums which is a non stop part of the job. And then just carrying on trying to get the name out there, which is really what it’s all about. It’s going well though. On Wednesday night I put on my first solo original concert here on the Coast, in Casares. It went really well, and I was flattered as hell to see how many people came to listen to my own music. It was a fantastic night, and the venue was stunning as well. I was supported by the local town hall, and I think I was very lucky to have so much support behind me for that night. I’m really looking forward to the next one like that.
Do you have any celeb crushes?
We all do, right! I think Jessica Biel is gorgeous! And Salma Hayek. 15

David Mairs I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since my family and I set off for the Costa del Sol but they say time flies when you’re enjoying yourself, and what a journey it’s been. Up till then I’d been playing piano/ organ, in Scotland, with one of the top bands and toured, as support, with some of the big name bands in the business at the time, such as The Searchers, The Easybeats, The Tremolos, The Move, Love Affair, Edison Lighthouse etc. Those were great days in the late 60s and early 70s and the music scene was buzzing. Shortly after we arrived in Fuengirola I met Mel Williams, a legend on the Costa with whom I had the pleasure of working for 4 years. What a character and a talented entertainer/song writer. Together we worked on too many projects to mention from regional and national television to producing stage shows. I loved every minute of it and learned a lot from a master of his craft.
The Regional TV studio is where I met Maurice Bolland, a broadcaster and entertainer from Ireland. He presented the “Late Late Breakfast Show” where I met and had the pleasure of playing with such big name stars as Lonny Donegan, Mike McGear, Linda Nolan and Faith Brown to name but a few. What a blast that was. Later I took on the position of resident musician at the prestigious Restaurant Mijas Playa in La Cala de Mijas where I continued to meet some of the most fascinating people from all walks of life and regularly played for stars from the sporting, music and TV world. It was great, and occasionally nerve racking to sing “love is all Around” to the man who wrote and sang the original song, Reg Presley, sadly no longer with us, or “We don’t talk Anymore” to Cliff himself.
My life took another direction when I met artist/composer/writer Dario Poli, another Scot but, as you might know with a name like that, of Italian decent. A truly fascinating character, an intellectual actually and who never ceases to surprise me. Together we’ve produced a CD of original songs celebrating life on the Costa del Sol. Two of which, “Corazon” and “You’re Beautiful”, are the official songs on the “Children For Peace “, a prestigious charity based in Italy, web site. At present Dario and I are working on a new Musical based on the city of Amsterdam. A story of love, fate, intrigue and great music (a completely unbiased opinion you understand) Looking forward to the next part of the journey. Who knows? David

An exciting new musical Two composers, Dario Poli and David Mairs, who make things happen with their original style and magic of their catchy music and arrangements, both originate from Scotland and have been residents on the Costa del Sol for many years.
David and Dario’s latest work, from which has come the new single “Amsterdam I Am”, is an exciting stage musical linking the cities of Amsterdam and Marbella and is set in the beautiful Dutch City of Amsterdam. A touching and complex tale of romance, twists of fate and feel good music from Flamenco to Celtic. No matter what your age, this production is sure to bring a smile to your face. Dario and David are already receiving interest from people in Holland who are intrigued to know more about this project and Dario is heading out this week, to Holland, for meetings with the relevant professionals to discuss the production of this musical in Amsterdam. This follows on from their successes with the wellpublicised “Marbella Marbella” campaign and the song “Corazon”. Tenor, Stephen Lloyd-Morgan said, “Corazón can simply be described as a superb and appropriate ‘anthem’ for The Children for Peace Charity; memorable, upbeat and inspiring, rolled into one. Congratulations!” –and David’s own composition, “You’re Beautiful, a sure hit waiting to be discovered” was one of many positive comments. Both songs were written for the
International UNESCO recognised charity based in Rome, and highly praised by Debbie Mace and Lamia Khashoggi, the President and Vice-President of the prestigious charity who have featured Dario and David’s songs with videos on their official website. Dario has recently been back in contact with Eric Holzhauer, the Dutch owner of Radio Sun FM in Spain, who supported their original campaign for Marbella, and regularly played the Marbella song writing “Let’s make your song the official song of Marbella.” Dario is particularly thrilled with the reception they’re having, as it was in the Amsterdam that his dramatic musical drama “Lady X and The Power of Destiny” (loosely based on the late Princess Diana which was recorded and produced in Dublin) is legally represented,
David and Dario are confident that their new musical will play a useful and positive role in a cultural exchange, through their music, between these two cosmopolitan cities.

Journeys Peter Stanway
Peter Stanway’s life has been made up of a series of fantastic journeys some of which have been scarcely believable, others mind-blowing all of them life-changing. Stanway has travelled the world and gained insight and experiences that have made him the intriguing man that he is today. His journeys continue and so too do the changes, more subtle now and less extreme. Both time and maturity have become key elements on Stanway’s life journey, however, they serve to add a richness and depth that only they can bring; as they would with a well-seasoned Stradivarius. Stanway is letting his artist loose. He absolutely believes that every single human being has an artist inside that’s just waiting to be identified and released. It is part of our DNA, he believes, and, once discovered, we will not only find great satisfaction but fulfilment 22

book in various hotels. Dates and locations to be announced.
Glasgow born artist, Peter Stanway, recently put together an exciting and inspiring collection of artwork from pieces that he has been working on for the past year. In total, there are twenty-seven images. Stanway has sent them on a journey.
‘Runway’ “Who has passed this way? It was you and me, on a journey. Read the signs, they tell a tale. Did we go far or stay close by? Distance is not the issue, neither is destination. Where did we go on our journey, did we ever arrive? I hope so.”
For some, their journey began in Mijas Town Hall, others have journeyed to exhibitions in Frankfurt, Paris and Madrid. Happily, there is currently a collection of eight magnificent pieces that showcase the diversity and range of Stanway’s work on show in the Tamisa Golf Hotel on Mijas Costa. This exhibition of Limited Edition Archival Digital Pigment Prints opened on August 20th and will run for the next few weeks. On September 6th, an exhibition of ten pieces, seven of which have not yet been seen will open in the Mijas Hotel until September 30th. Stanway is also launching his acclaimed autobiography, “Wee Boys from Glasgow Don’t Cry” in both English and Spanish (“De la Muerte a la Vida”). Much of Stanway’s incredible story takes place in Andalucia in particular around Mijas. He will be organising a series of public readings from his

Terrifying TV DIY WARNING!!! Get your flatscreen TV fitted by a professional
The number of children injured by a TV falling on them grew 125 per cent between 1990 and 2011, according to a new study of emergency room records that calls for greater prevention efforts. Overall, more than 17,000 children under age 18 were treated each year for various TV-related injuries in ERs across the United States – that’s one child every half hour – during that time period, the study released Monday in the journal Paediatrics found. Between 2000 and 2011, 215 children died from injuries caused by a falling TV. “This is a serious problem,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Gary Smith, a paediatrician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, told NBC News. “A child’s dying once every three weeks from a TV tip-over. The numbers are going up. This is a call to action. These are 100 per cent preventable injuries.” 24
The increase is from a combination of more TVs in homes and a growing number of injuries from televisions falling from furniture that was not designed to hold them, Smith said. Forty-six per cent of the tip-overs involved a TV falling off a dresser or armoire, while 31 per cent were due to a TV falling from an entertainment centre or TV stand, according to the study. The lighter, top-heavy design of flat-screens could actually make them easier for a child to pull over, the study found. Children under the age of 5 were the most at risk, accounting for 64 per cent of the injuries, because young children can’t get out of the way as quickly as older children. Almost 61 per cent of the injured children were boys. Other than falling TVs, children were also hurt by striking or hitting the TV.
Enormous flatscreens are in millions of homes, but come with a risk that many parents may not realise: children can be seriously hurt in a TV tip-over.
The head and neck were the most commonly injured body part, noting that injuries ranged from bruising to death. Other injuries included lacerations, fractures and sprains.
Please be extremely careful when erecting a new TV onto the wall or anywhere else for that matter. To be on the safe side, do not do it yourself. Have your TV fitted by the retailer you purchased from, a TV and audio specialist or a reputable builder. These injuries can be avoided!

Do you know your
Colour Palette? Everyday, we choose and wear clothing based on our favourite or preferred colours, or colours that are in fashion at a particular time. We also have a habit of following what colours our favourite celebrities are wearing. The problem is, you may find that those colours although nice in their own right may actually do nothing for you or worst case may end up being detrimental to your overall look.
Lifestyle Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Berta Balmes, founder of BfB International. She is a fashion and style expert who trained in London and has many years’ experience working within the industry in Los Angeles, Houston, Florence, Munich, Madrid and Marbella. Berta’s expertise can be applied to both men and women, working with each client individually to assess and fulfil their specific goals, whether they would like to update their everyday look, obtain a complete makeover, or prepare for a specific event. Her consulting strategy is matching personality, lifestyle, colour season, body and face type to today’s current styles, while solving common challenges such as problems deciding what to wear, what to buy or how to shop.
My session with Berta To start off, Berta explained the reasons why it is so important to know your colour palette as once this is determined, this can positively impact the image that we portray of ourselves to the rest of the world thus helping us to succeed in all aspects of our everyday life. So why is this important? Everyday we are judged whether we realise it or not. Many of us may choose not to care about the way people view us because if we did it would require too much effort, however we do not realise that without having to go out of our way, just knowing what colours and styles suit us can largely influence the way we are perceived by others and also the way we see ourselves. Feeling positive about the way we feel the minute we walk out of the door in the morning creates such positive energy within ourselves influencing the way our day will pan out.
Berta explains that you never have a second chance to make a First Impression! “90% of people will form an opinion of you within the first 40 seconds of meeting you and in an interview situation you will be virtually fully judged within the first 4 minutes of stepping foot in the room.” “The impact we make on other people depends, 55% on how we look and behave, 38% on how we sound – pitch, pace & tempo and only 7% on what you actually say!” Berta also gave me a clever little quote from Coco Channel who said, “There is no such thing as an ugly woman, only a lazy one.” When thinking about it this does seem true. If we only learnt what colours and styles made us stand out along with pointing out our best features, we can then enhance those features with the right fabrics, styles and colours and we would all look amazing!
How to determine your colour palette Colour analysis, also called skin tone colour matching, personal colour or seasonal colour, is the process of finding colours of clothing and makeup to match a person’s skin complexion, eye colour, and hair colour. It is often used as an aid to wardrobe planning and style consulting. Colour analysis is the process of determining the colours that best suit an individual’s natural colouring. There are a wide variety of approaches to analysing personal colouring. The most wellknown is “seasonal” colour analysis, which places individual colouring into four general categories: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.
Berta had offered to do my colour analysis which I was looking forward to as I have never been able to find the right makeup to match my skin tone and would hunt endlessly for different brands that never looked quite right but were just ok. Sales assistants at makeup counters could never match me right, especially with the fluorescent lights in department stores. I was 34
also curious to know which hair colours would bring the best out in me and also if I was wearing the right colours in my clothing. Berta sat me in front of a large mirror in natural light. This took place at 10.30 am as she explained around this time in the morning, here in Spain, is the best time to determine the colouring and undertones in my skin. All my make up was removed and a large white cloth was draped around me covering all of my clothes and a white turban towel covered all of my hair. This was now the base from which to start. I must emphasise that what happens next, only a true colour analyst can do. Berta had large pieces of fabric in every colour and tone imaginable. These were called drapes. Who knew the colour pink or yellow for that matter, came in so many undertones. I thought pink was pretty much, light pink, bubblegum and fuchsia. Well I was wrong. Every colour had different tones with either Cool (pink, red or bluish undertones) or Warm (yellow or golden undertones). We are either one or the other. I found out that the wrong undertone against my skin really did make me look awful. The colours that made my face lighten up and which highlighted my eyes and make my skin look more youthful were those colours with pink undertones. The difference was astounding. The yellow or golden undertones made me look seriously ill! After much time taken in holding different coloured swatches in various tones up to me, Berta narrowed me down to either a Winter or an Autumn. She then held the Autumn tones to me and the earthy
colours did nothing once again for my complexion or my eyes as there were a lot of golden and orange rust tones in that season. Berta then held up the Winter fabrics and those colours suited me much better. So she pinpointed me to Winter. Again the warm coloured Winter tones were put to me and then the cool coloured Winter tones. The cool tones made me look radiant. The ashy tones actually made my eyes and skin look brighter. Some of my clothes in my wardrobe matched and a lot didn’t and come to think about it, the ones that I shouldn’t be wearing I rarely wore anyway as they weren’t really me. Now I know why. Had I known my colours before, I would have saved a lot of time and money. This, by the way worked for my jewellery also. I always wore gold jewellery only to find out it was not what I should be wearing. I should stick to white gold or silver. So now for makeup. This I was really looking forward to as I could never get my makeup right and again, now I know why. I kept getting matched in department stores to warm under toned foundation just because I have brown eyes. This is not the case. People also assume because you are blue eyed that you are cool. Again this isn’t the case. Cosmetic assistants match you more to the shade, how darker or lighter the foundation should be which is partly right, but that’s only half the battle. Whether that foundation has a warm or cool undertone
makes the world of difference in finding a shade that is absolutely amazing and one that looks ok. The wrong undertone can make your face look dull, muddy or ashy.
my makeup never looked amazing. I just thought it was because I was not an expert at applying my makeup and that I wasn’t blessed with the best skin.
(Your skin’s surface tone is the colour that you can see on the surface of your skin, often described as light, medium, tan, deep, and so on. Your skin’s undertone is the colour underneath the surface. You can have the same skin colour as someone, but a different undertone)
Now once Berta had finished applying my makeup I looked years younger, fresher and my skin looked amazing! For years I had spent money on makeup to make me look worse, what a waste. I can actually say the experience with Berta has been ‘life changing’. I was given my own pocket swatch of my colours with tips for my makeup, hair colours etc all written in the back. I was told that this should stay in my handbag and anytime I go to buy makeup, clothing, get my hair coloured etc, I should consult my swatch. Not a problem with me. I will now live by it!
Berta applied my makeup using the undertones matched by my season, Cool Winter. The foundation used was light with pink undertones, eye shadows were shades of pinks matched from my palette and blusher used was pinkish. She told me to stay clear of gold, bronzed toned blushers. They were my enemy. If only I knew this years ago as funnily enough I wondered why my colouring was never right and
you could not find a more unique yet beneficial and life changing experience!
This one-time visit and the knowledge you take away with you will stay with you forever.
This was definitely an eyeopening experience that I would recommend to everyone. Whether you are just treating yourself, or if it is a surprise gift for a loved one,
Your image is the key to making a powerful first impression for personal, professional, and social success. Complete make-over • Body analysis Colour analysis • Personal styling • Personal shopping Business coaching • Social protocols

One Direction set to H become the world’s first billionaire boy band Our minds are BLOWN! We knew One Direction was the best thing since beer-battered cod, but we had no idea they were worth so much money!!!! Number-munching economists who also dabble in boy bands suggest the boys are on pace to generate over a billion dollars in revenue by the end of their 2014 tour!!! You read that right: 1D is on track to be worth $1B! The fab five are adorable and supremely talented, but how are they making more cheese than Switzerland?! First and foremost, they’re putting asses in seats — over half of the band’s revenue comes from selling concert tickets! Record sales are helping, too! The boys are pushing out chart-topping hits faster than old people push out prune juice! And there is also $$$ from cinema tickets, DVDs, & other misc merchandise! From third place on the X Factor to first place in our hearts and a billion Dollars, 1D has come a long way in a few short years!!!
One Direction Zayn Getting Married! Perrie walked the red carpet at One Direction’s ‘This Is Us’ film premiere on Aug. 20, wearing a huge diamond ring on her ring finger. Hours after they walked the carpet, One Direction’s rep confirmed to HollywoodLife.com that Zayn and Perrie ARE engaged! Zayn reportedly got down on one knee and proposed to the Little Mix singer during a quiet weekend when they were ‘alone together’. Perrie accompanied Zayn and the other One Direction boys at the band’s movie premiere, and she stunned onlookers in a black gown with sheer panels, a high pony tail and a big, HUGE diamond ring on her finger! Fans immediately speculated that Perrie and Zayn were engaged. We’re not very surprised by this new development. In a recent interview with Twist magazine, Perrie couldn’t stop gushing about Zayn.
36
“Zayn is so lovely,” Perrie said. “You know things are good when you can’t wait to see the other person. It’s a sense of friendship. The main thing I looked for is if he’s fun to be around, if I can have a laugh with him.”
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones to Divorce Hollywood couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones’ 13-year marriage is over, it was claimed this week. An insider said: “Michael is going to announce the split soon. Catherine is fighting to save the marriage but he’s had it.” But another report said she was set to start a multi-million divorce battle. Earlier this week Michael, 68, was pictured arriving in Sardinia by private jet but mum-of-two -Catherine, 43, was nowhere to be seen. They have not been pictured together in public for four months. Reports of a marriage crisis were denied earlier this year but Michael’s spokesman would only say yesterday: “I won’t talk about that.” Welsh Catherine supported her husband as he battled throat cancer in 2011. He helped her when she had a stint in rehab for bi-polar disorder.
Khloe’s marriage, messier than we thought! Khloe Kardashian’s marriage with Lamar Odom might be messier than anyone thought. While they’ve been embroiled in a rumoured cheating scandal as Lamar Odom has been rumoured to have had two mistresses recently, it seems like Khloe Kardashian has kicked him out! He was spotted in a black SUV with a friend on Wednesday in Woodland Hills where they met up with Khloe’s best friend, Malika. Malika brought Lamar his white Mercedes, which his friend then loaded some luggage into before heading to the petrol station. This is only fuelling rumours that the reality TV star has kicked out her husband for good after all of this cheating news. However, apparently that isn’t even the root of the problem. It’s being reported Lamar has struggled with drug abuse issues for about the last two years. Khloe allegedly got him to check into rehab last summer, but he had a hard time staying there. He reportedly ended up leaving after three weeks. However, he apparently stayed clean during the basketball season and played well with the Clippers, but once that was over it’s rumoured so was his sobriety. And things apparently spiralled so out of control that the Kardashian family staged an intervention to get him back into rehab just DAYS ago, but he wasn’t into it. That’s reportedly when Khloe threw Lamar out of the house, which was caught on camera in pictures of him getting his stuff from a friend. But don’t count this marriage over because it’s being reported Khloe still wants to get Lamar help and has no plans to divorce him. She is hurt by his rumoured cheating but knows the drugs are where the problem is right now. We hope she can get Lamar the help he might need.

Simon Cowell ready to be a dad Simon Cowell has vowed to dedicate himself to his unborn child full-time – but not until he reaches his sixties. The multimillionaire, 53, plans to carry on running his global music and TV empire after pregnant lover Lauren Silverman gives birth. But he has told friends he will start to wind down for his 60th birthday, when the child will be seven. A pal said: “It’s hard to imagine Simon as a house husband and his work is his life, but he has said it will be time to take a back seat in a few years. “He has achieved everything he can with his astonishing career. And while he won’t walk away from it all in a hurry, he is looking forward to the day when he becomes a fulltime dad.” Simon and New York socialite Lauren, 36, were together yesterday on the French Riviera. The couple were reunited on Thursday in Cannes, where they are staying in a £5,000-a-night hotel. Lauren is now divorced from husband Andrew after agreeing a £1.3million settlement and Simon has told friends he wants to give the relationship a go.
Ben Affleck looks set to don the black cape following the news that he will play the role of Batman in the new Superman sequel. The actor whose film Argo has received critical acclaim will star alongside Henry Cavill who will resume the role of Superman in the sequel which will see both of the iconic superheroes in the same film.
H
Speaking about Ben’s role in the film which is due for release in 2015, BBC News reported Greg Silverman, Warner Bros President, saying: “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill and then some.” Whilst some fans seemed happy about the choice of casting, other fans are outraged. One fan posted on the social networking site: “Ben Affleck is the new Batman? Well they might as well cast Hulk Hogan as the next Bond whilst they’re at it.” Another fan posted: “What the actual f**k!!! Ben Affleck as Batman, are Warner Bros that stupid? May I just remind the studios of a film called Daredevil.” Poor Ben! Looks like he has a lot to prove and surely will be focused on making the new Superman Sequel a hit.

Are you suffering from
Hair Loss?
It is normal to lose between 50-100 hairs a day, this is part of the hair renewal process. However most people suffer from excessive hair loss at one time in their life. There are many reasons for this including medication, radiation, chemotherapy, exposure to chemicals, hormonal and nutritional factors, thyroid disease, generalised or local skin disease, and stress. Since the follicle is a very sensitive it does respond to imbalances in the body. Most hair loss caused by disease or illness is temporary and resolves itself after the body has returned to a healthy condition. These are some of the more common reasons for hair loss.
High fever, severe infection, severe flu Sometimes one to three months after a high fever, severe infection or flu, a person may experience hair loss, this is usually temporary and corrects itself.
Thyroid disease Both an overactive thyroid and an underactive thyroid can cause hair loss. Thyroid disease can be diagnosed by your physician with laboratory tests. Hair loss associated with thyroid disease can be reversed with proper treatment.
Deficient diet Some people who go on low protein diets, or have severely abnormal eating habits, may develop protein malnutrition. To help save protein the body shifts growing hair into the resting phase. If this happens massive amounts of hair shedding can occur two to three months later. A sign of this is if the hair can be pulled out by the roots fairly easily. This condition can be reversed and prevented 42
by eating the proper amount of protein. Its very important when dieting to maintain an adequate protein intake.
Medications Some prescription drugs may cause temporary hair shedding in a small percentage of people. Examples of such drugs include some of the medicines used for the following: gout, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, or blood thinner. High doses of vitamin A may also cause hair shedding.
Cancer treatments Chemotherapy and radiation treatment will cause hair loss because it stops hair cells from dividing. Hairs become thin and break off as they exit the scalp. This occurs one to three weeks after the treatment. Patients can lose up to 90 per cent of their scalp hair. The hair will regrow after treatment ends and patients may want to get wigs before treatment. There are some drugs in development to help prevent this hair loss from occurring.
Major surgery /chronic illness Anyone who has a major operation - a tremendous shock to the system - may notice increased hair shedding within one to three months afterwards. The condition reverses itself within a few months but people who have a severe chronic illness may shed hair indefinitely. A relatively unknown fact is that hair transplantation surgery can actually cause additional hair loss or “shock fallout”. Hairs lost from shock fallout usually don’t regrow.
Alopecia Areata Low serum iron Iron deficiency occasionally produces hair loss. Some people don’t have enough iron in their diets or may not fully absorb iron in their diets. Women who have heavy menstrual periods may develop iron deficiency. Low iron can be detected by laboratory tests and can be corrected by taking iron pills.
This type of hair loss is believed to be caused by the immune system reacting to hair follicles as if they were antibodies and shutting them down. The hair loss is usually limited to a coin sized area and all the hair in the area is lost leaving a totally smooth round patch. In a more severe rarer condition called Alopecia Totalis, all hair on the entire body is lost, including the eyelashes. Treatments include topical medications, a special kind of light treatment, or in some cases drugs.
Fungus Infection (Ringworm) of the scalp Caused by a fungus infection, ringworm (which has nothing to do with worms) begins with small patches of scaling that can spread and result in broken hair, redness, swelling, and even oozing. This contagious disease is most common in children and oral medication will cure it.
Stress Stress can cause hair loss is some people. Usually it occurs 3 months after the stressful event has occurred and it may take 3 months after the stress period has ended for the hair growth to resume. In most cases it is temporary if the person is not predisposed to genetic or Androgenic Alopecia, if they are stress may trigger the onset of genetic hair loss or may worsen existing Androgenic hair loss.

This Beach Fit Marbella workout leads you through 7 high-intensity strength and cardio exercises designed to challenge your strength and endurance while burning lots of calories. The workout moves quickly, taking you from one exercise to the next with little or no rest. Take breaks when you need to, but try to keep your heart rate up. Many of these moves are advanced, so modify whenever necessary to stay safe and avoid injury.
Beach Training High-Intensity Strength and Cardio Warm up with 5-10 minutes of light cardio. (light jogging, marching etc.) Perform each exercise one after the other for 30-60 seconds, modifying as needed. Complete all ten exercises for a 8 minute workout, or repeat the series 2-3 more times for a longer workout.
1
Squat Thrusts
Stand with feet together. Squat down and place your hands on the floor next to your feet. In an explosive movement, jump feet backwards into a push-up position, jump feet back between hands and stand up. Perform 10 reps, march in place for a few seconds and repeat 10 more reps.
2
Push-Ups
Begin in push-up position on the floor. Perform 4 push-ups, abs in and back straight. On the 5th push-up, lower halfway down and hold for 4 counts. Push back up and repeat the series - 4 regular push-ups and 1 half hold. Repeat for 30-60 seconds.
3
Plyo Jumping Jacks Begin with feet together and jump up, taking feet out to the side while circling arms overhead and land in a squat. Jump up and bring feet back together, circling arms back in. This is just like a slow jumping jack, but really use power when pushing up into the jumps. Repeat for 30-60 seconds.

Ski Jumps Stand with feet together. Bend the knees and jump to the right as far as you can – think of jumping laterally rather than vertically. Land with soft knees and immediately jump laterally to the left. Repeat for 30-60 seconds.
5
Cool down with 5-10 minutes of light cardio and stretching Sip water throughout the workout and also try to train in a group to help keep you motivated.
Tricep Dips Sit on a bench or low wall with hands next to the hips. Lift up and take the hips forward, just in front of the bench. Bend the elbows and lower down until elbows are about 90 degrees. Squeeze the triceps to push back up and repeat 30-60 seconds.
6
Push-Up Side Planks
In push-up position (on knees or toes), perform one push-up. As you come up, shift weight to left arm, twist to the side while bringing the right arm up towards the ceiling in a side plank. Lower the arm back to the floor for another push-up and then twist to the other side. Repeat for 30-60 seconds.
7
Sprints mark out a stretch of sand around 20 to 30 meters depending on your fitness levels, then sprint to the end and back exhausting the last of your energy.
Rest for 2 minutes then repeat exercises again. 47
Does your
FAVOURITE MUSIC help or hinder your workout? Most of us listen to music when we exercise. However, when it comes to selecting music that will inspire the most energetic movement response from your body, there’s more to it than which tunes makes you tap your feet. In fact, choosing music you may not find appealing could actually benefit your workout. Many research studies have looked at music’s effect on exercise. Findings include that music can increase the length of time someone works out, can lower their feeling of exertion, and can help them run or swim faster, among other positive outcomes. Many of these studies addressed music tempo as playing a key role in exercise motivation and performance. Most have settled on the 125-140 beats per
minute range as being ideal for a workout. But as long as the music has the recommended tempo, most researchers and exercisers alike have felt it doesn’t much matter what particular style the music is -whether classical, reggae, rock, pop, folk, jazz or Latin. A July 2013 study has called that notion into question. Researchers in Belgium discovered that, while music tempo may influence exercise pace, such as the timing of steps when walking or running, other qualities in the music, such as the beat patterns and complexity of the notes, influence the energy level of the movements themselves. The researchers took 52 selections of music, each with 130 beats per minute, but with different musical qualities. Participants walked in synchronisation with the music, meaning they took the same number of steps for each 30-second piece of music. To get a neutral reading of the walking speed and distance covered in 30 seconds of walking to a tempo of 130 beats per minute, researchers had the participants walk to a metronome with no music. If tempo was all that mattered, the speed and the distance covered during each music selection would be the same as that covered during the metronome bouts. It didn’t turn out that way. The participants walked significantly farther (meaning faster) during some music selections and significantly less far during others, even though the number of steps they took was the same. This means that they increased their stride lengths during some music selections and decreased them during other music selections. In other words, some music elicited a more vigorous and energetic movement response than others. When analysing the sonic features in terms of beat and tone, researchers uncovered that the simpler and more predictable songs encouraged more
48
energetic movement than more complex and expressive songs. Those with a simple, undeviating binary meter (divided into equal parts divisible by two) elicited bigger steps than those that disturbed or weakened the binary meter through small timing deviations, pitch changes or loudness variations. And songs with the simpler tonal patterns, meaning with just one or two dominant notes in the space between beats, motivated participants to take longer strides than music with three or more dominant notes per inter-beat interval. In a nutshell, the less sophisticated the music, the better for working out. To put findings in more subjective, laymen’s terms, the researchers had the participants categorize all of the songs, using nine pairs of opposite adjectives: good/bad, happy/sad, tender/ aggressive, soft/loud, slow/fast, moving/static, stuttering/flowing, easy/difficult to synchronise with and known/unknown. The only adjectives that were significant to the music eliciting a more energetic response were bad, aggressive, loud, fast and stuttering -- qualities relating to loudness and tone colour. Liking or being familiar with the song or having it evoke emotions such as happiness had no motivating effect in terms of bigger steps. So what music genre can lead you to take bigger strides in your workout? Pop/techno. Expressive genres such as reggae and jazz don’t appear to inspire the same vigorous moves. So if you want to exceed in your training update your choice of music and your motivation will soar!

Protein Powders Why take a protein supplement? Protein is a necessary component of the human diet. It is used in almost every biological process in the human body. There are many benefits to consuming adequate protein levels, including satiety and muscle recovery. Protein has also been shown to lower body fat mass, lower cholesterol and regulate glucose. However, there are many different proteins to choose from and they all have different properties that affect the body in different ways. One way to incorporate protein in the diet is through protein powders.
This month learn about why we need protein and how much to take for your body size.
Determine the main reason for using protein powder Before adding protein powder to the diet, you should know why you are adding it. Knowing what the main reason is for the protein powder will allow you to choose a protein or a combination of proteins that will achieve the desired effect.
Add protein powder for muscle gain Protein powders are a good way to aid in the recovery of muscle and the building of new muscle. If you are working out in order to build muscle, it is a good idea to add protein powder to your diet. A supplement should never replace real food sources of protein. It’s just that... a supplement. It’s there to add extra protein to the diet that cannot be consumed via food.
Add protein powder for weight loss Protein increases the feeling of satiety and fullness, which may help curb overeating. It is also important for maintaining current muscle mass when doing exercise.
Add protein powder for overall health Studies have shown some proteins to aid in delivering bioactives throughout the body and to lower cholesterol. Adding a protein powder to a healthy diet could help with lowering cholesterol, blood pressure or body mass quicker than just eating a healthy diet alone.
Add protein powder as a dietary supplement There are many reasons to add protein powder as a dietary supplement. • Vegetarians often lack appropriate amounts of protein and require supplementation. • Persons who have had a gastric bypass need extra protein due to decreased nutrient absorption in the gut. • People with certain diseases or ailments, such as celiac disease or crohn’s disease may need the extra protein during flare-ups due to reduced absorption in the intestine.

Know the amount of protein needed Protein is stored in the body muscle and must be consumed daily or it will be leeched from the muscle for biological repair of tissue. This results in wasting of muscle tissue and loss of strength. For this reason, it is recommended that people get all the essential amino acids needed by the body on a daily basis. Most people in western society do not need extra protein because the western diet is rich in protein. This doesn’t mean that using protein powders is bad for your health, but that you will need to plan your diet carefully, including the protein powders as a source of nutrition. The research is still emerging on the amount of protein needed for everyone. However, there are current recommendations for protein based on scientific evidence that everyone can use. Eat 0.8 g of protein for every 1 kg (2.2 lbs.) of body weight. This means that a 200 lb person would need approximately 72 g of protein a day. This is what the Institute of Medicine recommends for a healthy adult. These are subsistence levels for sedentary individuals. If you exercise at all, the minimum should be 0.8 g per pound of body weight. So, a 200 lb. human should have 160 g of protein daily, more that twice as much as sedentary individuals. Eat 15% of daily calories from protein. Protein provides 4 calories per gram. So for a 2,000 calorie diet, you would eat 75 g of protein daily. Again, this is for sedentary individuals and is a minimum amount needed to support life. Active persons should have at least twice that, or 30%. Increase daily calories of protein up to 40% (with fat at 30%, carbs at 30%). The extra protein calories should replace refined carbohydrates (eliminate high fructose corn syrup and processed grains) . For a healthy adult, this increase should not negatively affect the kidneys if you drink 12 (8 oz.) glasses of water daily. By increasing the amount of calories from protein, you will achieve the heart healthy affects of the protein, achieve fat loss and increase lean body mass.
OCTOBER’S ISSUE:
Limit protein intake to 0.8 to 1.25 g per 1 lb. of body weight per day if you are trying to gain muscle mass and decrease body fat percentage. If you have any health conditions that could affect your kidneys, limit protein to 0.8 g per pound We explain th of body weight and see your doctor for regular blood e d iff erence betwee work to monitor your kidney function. The American n various types Diabetes Association makes this recommendation for of protein powd people with kidney disease or diabetes. did you know...
YOU ARE EATING THIS... Carmine is a brilliant red dye made from crushed scale insects, typically cochineal or Polish cochineal insects. This dye is used in a wide variety of products, from cheese to paints, and people are often unaware of its use, due to the fact that labelling laws do not usually require its disclosure. Carmine has attracted a great deal of attention in some communities such as the vegetarian community due to its use as a food additive. In many regions of the world, producers can simply use the euphemism “colour added” to disclose the presence of carmine, but most consumers are not savvy enough to know what that phrase means. The dye is also listed as crimson lake or natural red number four, and in the European Union, it is identified as E120. On occasion, it will be explicitly listed as “carmine” on a label, or as “cochineal dye.” To make carmine, producers collect thousands of cochineal insects and then crush them. Depending on the conditions in which the insects are crushed, the colour of the dye can vary considerably, and this is an important consideration for companies that want to make consistent dyes. The crushing causes the insects to release carminic acid, a substance which they generate to repel predators, and this can be treated to yield carmine.
Dannon has come under fire recently as it produces the bright red hue of some of its yoghurts not only with fruit, but with carmine, the crushed bodies of cochineal beetles. The fact isn’t sitting well with the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which believes many consumers are unaware they have consumed an insect-based ingredient which could prove problematic for vegetarians or consumers with dietary restrictions. Allergies could also create an issue for some consumers. According to various company websites, Dannon uses carmine in the strawberry, cherry, boysenberry and raspberry flavours of its “Fruit on the Bottom” line; the strawberry flavour of its Oiko’s brand Greek yoghurt; the pomegranate berry flavour of its “Light and Fit” yoghurt; the blueberry flavour of its “Light and Fit Greek” yoghurt; as well as several flavours of its Activia brand yoghurts. The FDA considers carmine a natural colour additive and exempts it from stringent certifications. CSPI believes, however, that Dannon should replace carmine with colour from the fruits advertised on its product labels. It’s sponsoring an online campaign on TakePark. com addressing the issue. Dannon isn’t the first company to be hit with a carmine backlash. Last year, Starbucks was lambasted for using cochineal extract in its Strawberries & Crème Frappuccino and strawberryflavoured smoothies. In the fallout, it ditched the ingredient for lycopene, a natural, tomato-based extract. 59

Skipping breakfast may increase coronary heart disease risk in men You may have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – and new science reveals that it can actually be lifesaving, particularly for men. A large 16-year study finds men who reported that they skipped breakfast had higher risk of heart attack or death from coronary heart disease. The timing of meals, whether it’s missing a meal in the morning or eating a meal very late at night, may cause adverse metabolic effects that lead to coronary heart disease. Even after accounting for modest differences in diet, physical activity, smoking and other lifestyle factors, the association between skipping breakfast (or eating very late at night) and coronary heart disease persisted. Researchers analysed food frequency questionnaire data and tracked health outcomes for 16 years (1992-2008) on 26,902 male health professionals ages 45-82. They found: l Men who reported they skipped breakfast had a 27 per cent higher risk of heart attack or death from coronary heart disease than those who reported they didn’t. l The men who reported not eating breakfast were younger than those who did, and were more likely to be smokers, employed fulltime, unmarried, less physically active and drank more alcohol. l Men who reported eating late at night (eating after going to bed) had a 55 per cent higher coronary heart disease risk than those who didn’t. But researchers were less convinced this was a major public health concern because few men in the study reported this behaviour.
breakfast “ Skipping may lead to one or
more risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, which may in turn lead to a heart attack over time,
”
said Leah E. Cahill, Ph.D., study lead author and Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass.
During the study, 1,572 of the men had first-time cardiac events!

5 Diet Myths making you gain weight Could the diet you’re on right now be full of lies and misinformation that are making you pack on the pounds? Many of the things you’ve been taught about dieting may be stopping you from reaching your ideal weight. Here are some shocking truths about the dieting tips you swear by.
Diet Myth #1: Diet soft drinks help you lose weight Most diet soft drinks are lower in calories than regular soft drinks because they don’t use regular sugar. The problem here is the artificial sweeteners, which have been tied to weight gain. Why? Research shows that artificial sweeteners stimulate taste receptors that sense sweetness in both the esophagus and stomach. Anticipating energy, the pancreas releases insulin, an important hormone for accumulating body fat. At the same time, chemicals are sent to the brain’s satiety centre, which becomes confused as to whether or not the body is actually receiving calories. As your body gets “tricked” by the sugar substitute, you crave more food and become susceptible to overeating in order to feel satisfied. The result: You feel even hungrier and less full, which can lead to weight gain. Artificial sweeteners are more than 100 times sweeter than natural table sugar. This is cause for concern since naturally sweet foods, like fruits, won’t seem as sweet to a desensitised palate.
Diet Myth #2: The more calories you cut, the more weight you lose It may seem counter intuitive, but cutting too many calories from your diet can be bad for your waistline. Because 3500 calories equals about 1 pound of fat, you would need to cut 3500 calories out of your diet each week to lose 1 pound a week. In order to do this, you’d have to cut 500 calories a day to lose 1 pound a week. The problem with severely restricting diets, however, is that they jolt your body into “starvation mode,” preventing your body from burning unwanted fat. This mechanism, which is thought to have evolved as a defence against starvation, helps the body make the most of the calories it gets from food and drink; the body, in order to keep functioning, then looks to get some of it calories from lean muscle. This results in muscle loss. Less muscle means a slower metabolic rate – and in this case, stalled weight loss. 64
Diet Myth #3: Pasta makes you fat The problem with pasta is not the pasta itself – it’s more about portions. If you eat too much of anything, and don’t burn it off, your body will store it as fat. So whether it’s bread or pasta or rice, it’s about the volume and extra calories, not about the carbohydrates themselves. Add to that the heavy sauces and high-calorie cheeses, and no wonder pasta has a bad reputation. They key here is practicing portion control. Pasta is okay in moderation. Dietitians recommend 2 or 3 ounces of uncooked noodles per person, or half of a one-pound box to serve a family of four.
Diet Myth #4: Eating after 8pm will make you put on weight There is some truth to this myth. It is recommended not eating after 8pm because studies have shown that you are more likely to overeat and misjudge how many calories you consume when you eat late. Fatigue may be to blame here as it may cause you to eat too much of the wrong foods, causing you to put on weight. However, it’s not the time of day that makes you gain weight – it’s the extra calories! It does not matter when you consume the calories – if you exceed your recommended calorie intake, what you don’t burn will be stored as fat. Always be vigilant of how many calories you consume throughout the day. A healthy woman should consume between 1800-2000 calories a day and a healthy man between 2,300- 2,500.

Diet Myth #5: reduced fat foods are healthier alternatives Fat is one of the things that makes food taste good. When fat is removed from foods, a lot of the flavour is removed as well. To make up for this, extras – like sugars, chemicals and thickeners – are often added to enhance the flavour and texture of these foods. These additives can be far worse for you and sometimes just as fattening as full-fat food. Additionally, “low-fat” and “fat-free” doesn’t mean low-calorie. Think about all the additives – they’ve got to turn up somewhere, right? When looking at nutrition labels, keep your eyes peeled for the sources of these calories and think twice about bringing reduced fat foods into your home. Opt for fresh or whole foods – or buy the full-fat food instead, but consume in moderation.

Healing Powers of
Vinegar for your heart, weight, and various ailments Vinegar is probably a staple in your kitchen for homemade salad dressings, but it’s been known for its healing properties since the ancient Babylonians and Greeks. Our more recent ancestors used vinegar to cope with everything from tummy troubles to acne, and modern research has shown that many folk remedies have solid scientific backing. Vinegar is created when sugars in foods ferment and turn into alcohol. If the alcohol is allowed to continue fermenting, it turns into vinegar. The main ingredient in vinegar is acetic acid, but vinegar also contains vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Apple cider vinegar, made from fermented apples, is believed to offer the most health benefits.
Weight loss
Vinegar has been used to promote weight loss for thousands of years, and modern studies confirm its effectiveness. In a double-blind Japanese experiment, three groups of obese people drank a 500 ml drink (about a pint) containing either 30 ml (about 1 tablespoon) of vinegar, 15 ml, or no vinegar daily for 12 weeks. Those whose drinks contained vinegar had lower BMI, less visceral fat, and lost more weight than those whose drinks didn’t contain vinegar. Vinegar also lowered triglycerides. Another Japanese study found that mice whose high-fat diets were supplemented with acetic acid (the main ingredient in vinegar) developed up to 10 per cent less body fat than control mice. A third study found that people who were given small amounts of white and would vinegar along with a piece of bread d we want you grow felt fuller than those who just ate hillies? altar, orbread.

Diabetes Numerous studies have found that vinegar lowers blood sugar levels. A study published in the journal Diabetes Care in 2004 found that drinking apple cider vinegar after eating a high-carb breakfast lowered blood sugar levels by 34 per cent in patients with prediabetes, and by 19 per cent in those who had Type 2 diabetes. A 2007 study, also published in Diabetes Care, found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed lowered morning glucose levels by up to 6 per cent. And Italian researchers discovered that apple cider vinegar taken with meals slashed blood sugar levels by 30 per cent. “Vinegar appears to have effects similar to some of the most popular medications for diabetes,” said Arizona State University researcher Carol Johnson.
Arthritis Apple cider vinegar has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and many people swear by its ability to relieve the pain of arthritis. Church organist Sarah Gall of Richdale, U.K., was so crippled by arthritis she was going to have to give up her music. Conventional medicines, which included antiinflammatory drugs, did little to dull the pain and made her sick. “I was in agony,” she told the Daily Mail. In desperation, she began mixing cider vinegar with honey and hot water. After only a week, she began feeling better and says her arthritis disappeared. “My doctor was flabbergasted,” she said. Experts speculate that vinegar counters the acid that builds up in joints, and can also help prevent outbreaks of gout, a form of arthritis, by removing uric acid deposits from joints.
Heart health
Stomach problems
A report in January, 2008 Journal of the American College of Cardiology advised an anti-inflammatory diet including vinegar “should be considered for the primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease and diabetes.” A 10-year study found that women who used a vinegar-based salad oil five to six times each week lowered their risk of ischemic heart disease. Research published in June of 2011 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that apple cider vinegar significantly lowered triglycerides and cholesterol. Other research supports those findings: An animal study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found that apple cider vinegar reduced blood pressure, and another study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that apple cider vinegar lowered cholesterol. Researchers believe the decreases are due to the vinegar’s acetic acid content.

Cider vinegar has the ability to relieve numerous forms of stomach troubles. Its antibiotic properties can relieve diarrhoea caused by bacteria, and its pectin can ease intestinal spasms. It can also help prevent dysbiosis, an imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the gut, says Dr. Russell Blaylock, author of The Blaylock Wellness Report. If you are having problems with digestion and reflux, drink a teaspoon of organic vinegar mixed with 4 ounces of water with each meal, suggests Dr. Blaylock.
or take a 285 milligram tablet once a day. But check with your doctor before taking it long-term, especially if you have diabetes since the chromium in vinegar can affect insulin levels.
Apple cider vinegar is alleged to help dozens of ordinary problems including hiccups (swallow a teaspoon), a stuffy nose (a teaspoon in a glass of water), sore throat (gargle with cider vinegar and water in equal amounts), and bad breath (gargle half a teaspoon in water). If you want to add vinegar to your health regimen, try mixing two teaspoons in a glass of water

Furniture Outdoor
Outdoor furniture is so important when living on the Costa del Sol. The terrace can be an extension of the lounge, with the same comfort, but the added bonus of dining or lounging under the stars. There is such a large choice of furniture and decoration for the terrace now ranging from all weather Rattan to Bio-ethanol fires to mention but a few. Here are some tips from White Design Company when considering new furniture or decoration.
1
Before you purchase your outdoor furniture, you should analyse the space where it will go. Think about what you’ll need it for this is often where we come into it for advice. Is it for lavish dinner parties or quiet newspaperand-coffee mornings? Or simply lounging? How many people are you catering for? Does the space get a lot of sun? We can quite often help with multipurpose pieces to accommodate smaller areas. Dining and lounging in one for example.
2
If you are buying a dining table and chairs, how much space do you have? Oval or Round tables allow for an extra chair or two to be added with comfort when required. If you are working with a small terrace, consider armless chairs. They’ll take up less room around the table.
3
Which materials you choose is so important. You want it to be durable so it can withstand the elements but you also want it to look nice and be low maintenance. Weather can have a serious effect on your furniture. The summer sun is brutal on furniture. Here’s some information on some of the most common materials: All Weather Rattan which is wrapped around a steel or aluminium frame, making
it more durable and easier to clean. Wrought iron is indestructible but if the paint chips, it’ll need to be touched up. It’s heavy, so it’s best for patio areas rather than for grass. Aluminium is lighter than wrought iron and doesn’t rust. But it certainly doesn’t last as long as wrought iron. Natural Wicker is more fragile for the outdoors, Always a good idea to varnish the natural Rattan once a year to keep in good. Wood makes for a nice earthy look but it will change as the sun and rain hits it. Teak is the toughest of the woods but probably the most expensive. Be prepared to oil this furniture at least once a year to keep it looking good. And finally, plastic (resin) not the most comfortable without cushions but often a good choice when renting out your holiday home.
4
If you’re going for cushions, ideally you should have a place to store them when you’re not using them. Look for fabrics that have been Teflon coated. Also when we make or cover existing cushions, we advise that we put longer zips on them for you. It is sods law you burst one when taking them off to wash. Here at White Design Company we have a large range of fabrics for you to choose from.
5
If you’re working with a limited budget, you may consider borrowing chairs from inside occasionally to use on the terrace when you are entertaining. If there is generally 2-4 of you more often than not you may not need to buy 6-8 chairs when borrowing from inside.
6
If you don’t have a place to put the furniture during the winter months. Outdoor covers are a great option and we can make them to measure. It is so much easier to use them if you are not here all the time and the property is not in use. With a wide range of outdoor items available we are here for advice from the furniture through to outdoor rugs, heaters, lighting, cushions and much more. We work with Resol, La Fuma, Valencia Rattan, Hevea, Gabar and many more.
Enjoy the rest of the outdoor weather and see you soon.

Rolls-Royce
Wraith
Power, Style, Drama
When Rolls-Royce Motor Cars came to update its Phantom family of models, the words of company co-founder Sir Henry Royce were “Take the best that exists and make it better: when it does not exist design it.” Rolls-Royce Wraith echoes the spirit of these historic endeavours, pushing the boundaries of design and engineering, challenging perceptions and delivering the most dynamic, involving driving experience in the marque’s 109 year history. It didn’t exist, so Rolls-Royce designed it.
In its design, Rolls-Royce Wraith presents a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, exuding poise and the promise of dynamism. There is a sense that this car is ready to move with purpose on its driver’s command. Grace and beauty define the exterior presentation. The swept lines of the fastback, a style whose origins can be found in 1930s automotive design, most clearly signal its purposeful character, one which hints gently at the noir. Performance complements the drama of exterior styling. A shorter wheelbase, wider rear track, 624 bhp / 465kW derived from the twin turbo V12 and a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds (0-62, 4.6 seconds) give expression to the car’s dynamic looks. But Wraith is no GT bruiser; it is every inch a refined and luxurious RollsRoyce, a car where the sense of arrival and joy of the journey are as important as the canvas upon which it is drawn.
Effortless performance, luxurious interior Wraith debuts the most intelligent drive train ever to feature in a RollsRoyce, including the application of ground-breaking technologies like Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT). This processes GPS data to predict the driver’s next move and automatically select the right gear for the road ahead. Unnecessary gear changes are thus avoided, augmenting the famous Rolls-Royce trait of waftability and ensuring Wraith is constantly

poised to deliver on its dynamic promise. Following a sweeping bend, for example, the optimum gear is always pre-selected for effortless acceleration. Complementing Satellite Aided Transmission, Rolls-Royce Wraith’s further dynamic enhancements include a more direct steering response to aid precision in corners, as well as more dynamic spring and damper settings. Step inside Wraith’s coach doors and there is the feeling of going aboard a luxury yacht. It is a serene space for four occupants, who will be cocooned in a striking and contemporary interior furnished in beautiful materials, surrounded by tactile Phantom-grade leathers. Design details like the expansive Canadel Panelling and blood orange needle tips for speedometer and power reserve gauge hint further at agility, speed and performance. Look upwards however, and Rolls-Royce presents something more traditional - at least for the 21st century. Starlight headliner - offered for the first time beyond the Phantom range - features thousands of tiny fibre optic lamps hand-woven by craftspeople into the roof lining. It remains one of the company’s most endearing and popular features.
Unique in character In terms of sheer presence Wraith is clearly cut from the same luxurious cloth as today’s Phantom and Ghost models. Yet it displays cues that can be traced through past generations; effortless poise with accentuated rear overhang, elegant coach doors and, of course, the Spirit of Ecstasy adorning the grille. But this is a very different model to those of the last century - and stands alone among Rolls-Royce models today. A wider rear track, longer bonnet, raked glass house and deeply recessed pantheon grille, unite in presenting a truly focused car, a Rolls-Royce with its own unique character.

Luxurious interior Rolls-Royce Wraith’s coach doors open to present an inviting, harmonious interior space - one with every possible comfort, delivered in a thoroughly modern way. The eye is immediately drawn to the contemporary panelling that elegantly adorns the inside of the doors and sweeps round the entire lower space. Finished in either wood or leather, the effect draws the eye quickly around the cabin, similar in dynamic effect to the clean fastback style of the exterior.
Performance Wraith is the most powerful RollsRoyce ever to have played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. It develops 624 bhp, from a 6.6 litre twin-turbo V12, an engine that features direct petrol injection to maximise efficiency and reduce emissions. Should they wish to take advantage of the extraordinary power at their disposal, drivers may choose to be propelled from rest to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (0-62 mph, 4.6 seconds) and on to an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph.
Body The body has been engineered with a double front bulkhead to help insulate the interior from engine noise. It is constructed from steel sections and then wrapped in steel panels, which are brazed by hand. This allows a seamless join, which is then sanded by hand until it is perfect. In total, 6,364 individual spot-welds are applied to Rolls-Royce Wraith. In addition, 900m laser welded seams between the side panel and c-pillar and fully laser welded water drain in trunk compartment maintain the aesthetic purity of the car.

Taking the best sound system, and making it better Rolls-Royce employs experts for all aspects of high-end craftsmanship, from hand-painted coach lines to finely-tuned audio systems. Today Wraith presents a bespoke audio system that has been specially optimised by experts for stereo and multi-channel sources, that naturally - incorporates the finest hardware and latest advances in connectivity. Finely tuned by Rolls-Royce experts, the system takes the best features and components to produce a sound that is rich in quality and depth. DIRAC settings, ‘studio’ and ‘theatre’ guarantee optimal aural pleasure, for a pure, original sound or ‘larger than live’ sensation within the car. The fully active 18-channel amplifier delivers surround sound through 18 speakers. This includes two central bass speakers located in the boot, seven tweeters, seven mid-range and two ‘exciter’ speakers in the headliner bringing the sound sensation to ear level.
Safety and Technology As one would expect of a RollsRoyce, no technical avenue has been left unexplored to ensure occupant safety. The Advanced Crash Management system (ACSM) for example, utilises sensors placed around the car to make 2,000 measurements per second. This data ensures the car deploys the correct safety features in the event of an accident. A combination of seat belts with force limiters and smart airbags help protect occupants in the event of a severe impact. Those in the front seats have the reassurance of knee airbags and intelligent front airbags which feature graduated output and adaptive vents ensuring that the strength of bag deployment directly responds to the severity of a collision. In the event of a lateral collision, an integrated head airbag system, whose curtain extends to cover the side window areas in their entirety, protect against an impact with the vehicle structure, as well as from glass splinters. Side airbags in the front seat offer further extended protection.
Wraith incorporates a selection of technologies designed to improve illumination at night, protecting occupants and improving safety for other road users. Night vision technology, for example, now includes warning messages, as well as automatic brake preparation to support evasive action should an accident be imminent. Infrared cameras located in the upper corner of the grille are used to project a thermal image on-screen, an image which highlights warm objects, but which also identifies specific hazards on the road between 15m and 200 m ahead. In the event of an accident Auto eCall ensures that the emergency services are immediately aware of the incident’s location. If a driver is unable to respond to telephone calls, the car automatically alerts emergency services to its location via GPS positioning.
Conclusion Wraith is a car for the curious, the confident and the bold. In its fast back design is a culmination of luxury, refinement and craftsmanship. It is the most potent and technologically advanced Rolls-Royce in history.

When a passion becomes a profession
As a child, Antonio always loved motorbikes. He’d spend hours in the local garage watching the mechanics at work, dreaming of the day when he would be able to buy one for himself. Many years later, Antonio’s son, Daniel, started racing when he was only 8 years old, having inherited his father’s passion for bikes. They signed-up for track days at Jerez, Almería... in fact anywhere within Andalucía they could. At just 13, Danny was racing his Dad’s CBR 600.
88
Over the years Danny raced in the “Campeonato Andalúz de Velocidad” and the “Campeonato/ Open de la Extremadura”, finally reaching 5th place in the overall category, alongside semiprofessionals who had their own team of mechanics, specially prepared bikes and generous sponsors. Danny only had his Dad and a few good friends who helped in any way they could. Now in Jardín Botánico, La Cala, Mijas Costa, they both have a motorbike shop called Neumatix where they sell and fit reasonablypriced main brand tyres, do servicing, oil changes, breaks, etc., as well as having a well-stocked
and competitively-priced OUTLET BOUTIQUE. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 10 - 2 and 4 - 8, Saturdays from 10 - 2.

Football Fulham v West Brom
SATURDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER
Two teams who had varying fortunes last season and who will want to get better for this one. Fulham have started well and West Brom want points so this might be a game where both sides will go for a win. Still see a draw though. 1-1.
David Moyes
Aston Villa v Newcastle
So Villas star striker Benteke has stayed and signed a new deal and Villa are on the up. Darren Bent has probably left by now and Paul Lambert’s influence has started to show in the team play of the Villa team. Newcastle quite frankly are a shambles and with Joe Kinnear as Director of Football I can’t see too many great players signing up. Villa are at home here and I think they’re a stronger and better outfit than Newcastle who will be fighting relegation for most of the season. 2-0 to Villa. 90
FIXTURES & PREDICTIONS
The champions greet new boys Palace with open arms. United have a tough opening set of games which has already been winged about by Fergie...i mean Moyes. I expect a lot of similar tactics used by the new pretender, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it I guess, and I don’t expect any shocks in store here for United. Palace have nothing to lose though and will want to everyone including themselves that they can stay in the premiership. A tight game but I’ll still go for 2-0 to United.
Premiership
Man Utd v Crystal Palace
Hull v Cardiff
The new boys play each other. Cardiff were clear winners last season and I have a feeling they’ll give a good account of themselves today. I’ll go for stalemate and 0-0.
Stoke v Man City Mark Hughes
Mark Hughes has already introduced more possession to Stoke. Adding to their physical strength Stoke can now play a bit too. At times against Liverpool they threatened, especially in the last 15 minutes, but today they meet Manchester City who are a much better side. Spending 90 million so far, City’s squad is regarded as the best in the premiership and I can’t see Stoke getting anything from this game. 0-1 to City.
SUNDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER Sunderland v Arsenal
Sunderland and Paolo di Canio have brought in a lot of new faces and they’ve already shown that they are a better side than last season. Arsenal have brought in er...nobody and while they’re squad is a good one they need to tighten up at the back to maintain their top 4 position at the end of the season. There will be goals in this game and I think i’ll go for a high scoring draw 2-2.
Tottenham v Norwich
Spurs have spent well and brought in a lot of exciting talent in their bid to get top 4 this season. Norwich can only dream of the resources that Spurs have but will still do well enough to remain in the premiership this season. I can see Spurs winning here though as they’ll have too much for Norwich. 2-0 to Spurs.
Everton v Chelsea Roberto Martinez
Roberto Martinez likes to play attacking football but tends to leaks a lot of goals. At Wigan this was the case and after the first few games with Everton, they’re playing exactly the same. Everton’s strength though was being tight at the back and building from there. Everton have the resources to maintain a top 10 place but whether they can challenge for Europe again remains to be seen. A potentially tricky game for Chelsea but I still see them edging it. 1-2 to Chelsea.
Southampton v West Ham
SATURDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER Norwich v Aston Villa
Two teams who will hope to build on their promising last season. Southampton gambled and brought in a new manager mid season and that gamble paid off as they steered clear of relegation. They’ve also invested over 30 million in Lovren, Wayama and Osvaldo and so will be much stronger than last season. West Ham have bought 2 more Liverpool old boys and will hope to challenge the teams that finished above them last seasons, with Swansea and West Brom in their sights. I can see Southampton sneaking this one though 2-1.
Villa are in form and with Benteke playing well, there’s no reason to see Paul Lamberts team avoiding relegation easily and ending up in mid table. Norwich have invested well in Van Wolfswinkel and this should be a pretty evenly matched game. I’ll go for 1-1.
Cardiff v Tottenham
Cardiff have had a rude awakening to the Premiership and the hard lessons will continue here today. Spurs really want to replace their bitter rivals Arsenal for a place in the top 4 and with Andre Villas Boas they can do that, with or without Gareth Bale. Spurs to win this one, but it won’t be easy. 0-1 to Spurs.
Crystal Palace v Swansea Ian Holloway
MONDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER Swansea v Liverpool Simon Mignolet
Two clubs who like to play appealing football meet here. Liverpool have vulnerabilities in defense and their new goalkeeper Mignolet needs to settle his nerves. If he does so that confidence then spreads to the other defenders and a whole different mindset emerges. Swansea will fancy their chances here but Liverpool will only play one way, attack. This could be a hell of a game and I expect quite a few goals. I’ll go for 2-3 to Liverpool.
Palace’s manager, Ian Holloway has been vocal as normal and certainly enjoys the limelight of the premiership, he’ll want his Palace team to fare better than his last Premiership team, Blackpool and will want a win here. Laudrup’s Swansea will to get their form back from last season and they’re more than capable of challenging for Europe. Swansea to edge this one, 0-1.
91
Liverpool v Southampton
It’s saying something when Southampton have invested more money in their team than Liverpool have. Southampton will want to show what their team can do and I think they’ll provide quite a few problems for Liverpool here at Anfield. Normally I’d go for a home win but I think Southampton are good enough to gain a point. 1-1.
Newcastle v Hull
Two teams who are potential relegation fodder and so even though this game is early on in the season, it could be considered a 6 pointer. Newcastle have a better side and brought in a few new French faces and as they’re at home, I think they’ll win over Steve Bruce’s Hull. 1-0 to Newcastle.
West Brom v Sunderland
Nicholas Anelka
Steve Clarke will want to hit the ground running and though they’ve lost Lukaku back to Chelsea they still have Anelka as backup. He has more than enough class to fill in. While Sunderland can play well at times, I think West Brom will just about win this one. 1-0.
West Ham v Everton
Allardyce vs Martinez. Veteran manager vs the young pretender. Usually I don’t have a lot of time for Allardyce’s sides which tend to be anti football and dependent on how hard you can hit your opponent. With West Ham though I have been pleasantly surprised to see him mix strength with football. Everton have been weaker at the back so far this season but better in attack. I still see West Ham winning this one. 2-0 to West Ham. 92
SATURDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER Tottenham v Chelsea
Chelsea v Fulham
A local derby with Fulham on a hiding to nothing. Fulham’s Dimitar Berbatov has always got the class to unnerve any opposing team but I can’t see Fulham getting anything out of this game to be honest. Chelsea have a much better team and as they’re at home as well I can’t see anything beyond a comfortable Chelsea win. 2-0 to Chelsea.
SUNDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER Arsenal v Stoke
Andre Vilas Boas
Another top game with Andre Villas Boas wanting to beat the team that sacked him so ungraciously. I can see them doing it as well as this game is held at White Hart Lane. Chelsea though are always going to be hard to beat, especially with Mourinho at the helm and so i’ll go for a draw here and a 1-1 scoreline.
Aston Villa v Man City
With injuries mounting at Arsenal and a lack of squad depth the last team you want to play is the ever physical Stoke. In the recent past seasons, there have been incidents where Arsenal have been bullied out of the game but with this game being at the Emirates I can’t see that happening. Arsenal to win 2-0.
Though Villa have been playing well and they’re at home here, I still can’t see them having enough to beat an excellent Manchester City side. Pellegrini’s influence will start to change the squad from the disaster that was Mancini last season. And I seriously cannot see City slipping up here. 1-2 to Manchester City.
Man City v Man Utd
Fulham v Cardiff
What a game this should be! The game of the season so far and with both teams wanting to show the world what they can do. City will want to show that they’re a better side than last season and quite capable of winning this league this time. United will want to show that they’re just as dangerous as they were under Fergie. I don’t think they will cancel each other out and so I think there will be a few goals. This could be a classic. I’ll go for a 2-1 win for Manchester City.
Martin Jol
Fulham have always been strong at Craven Cottage and even though they have new owners, that influence, financially won’t be seen for a few transfer windows yet. Martin Jol is no fool and will make sure that Fulham remain tight and remain in the Premiership this season. They’ll be awkward and prove hard to beat. Cardiff won’t get anything from this game and I see a 2-0 win for Fulham.
Hull v West Ham
Hull have to start to get some points and West Ham will not give them up easily. Though this game is at Hull I think West Ham will be too strong for the newcomers and see the hammers winning by a couple of goals. 0-2 to West Ham.
Man Utd v West Brom
A tricky game for United, because West Brom want to show the world that they’re just as good as last season. If United don’t concentrate then they might slip up but I still don’t see anything less than a United win. 1-0.
SUNDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER Stoke v Norwich
So has Mark Hughes made an effect by now on Stoke? Chris Hughton certainly has had a positive effect on Norwich and of the two teams I would have to say that Norwich are the ones on the up. Playing at Stoke is always difficult and I think this could head for a draw. 1-1.
Sunderland v Liverpool Paolo di Canio
Southampton v Crystal Palace
With Southampton’s side having a core of three 18 year olds, and with the addition of the 3 more experienced heads, Southampton are shaping up nicely to be a top ten side. With Ricky Lambert scoring the goals and Osvaldo as back up, I can see this game ending up 2-0 to Southampton.
Swansea v Arsenal Michu
Has the di Canio effect made Sunderland any better? Well it’s certainly made them harder to beat and so with the arrival of Liverpool, who on their day can miss a hatful of chances, despite a huge amount of possession, then this game could go either way. I think Sunderland will show a good account of themselves and get a draw here. 1-1.
MONDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER Arsenal can often start badly but then slowly pull themselves together, so Swansea will hope the gunners are in brittle mood. Swansea had a tough game to start with and so will want to get back to something like their form of last season. Arsenal were interested in 2 of Swansea’s best players in Michu and Richards and they well be playing for Arsenal as you read this. Both Wenger and Laudrup like their teams to play good football and so I could see this as a high scoring draw. 3-3.
Everton v Newcastle
If Everton keep hold of Baines and Felliani from the clutches of Manchester United, then they have every chance to remain in the hunt for a European place. If they lose them then they’ll be lucky to remain in the top ten. Newcastle however aren’t exactly the power that they used to be but if everyone comes back from injury they should at least make this game a contest. I think Everton will just about win through here but it will be close. 1-0 to Everton.
ENGLAND MATCHES Friday 6th September Ukraine v England
The first of two must-win games for England this week. Ukraine being the trickier of the two. With Andrei Shevchenko finally retiring Ukraine can still qualify for the World Cup if they beat England and take their place over the next 4 matches. As the game is in the Ukraine it makes it even more difficult for Roy Hodgsons men. But cometh the hour cometh the man and it’s up to Captain Gerrard and his troops to stand up and be counted. We are a better team than Ukraine and if we can sort the nerves out we can certainly win here. 1-2 to England.
Tuesday 10th September England v Moldova
If we can’t beat Moldova at home, then we don’t deserve to go to the World Cup in the first place. England to win comfortably 3-0.

Club Profile: Arsenal
So this was going to be the summer where Arsenal would finally start spending money on big star signings rather than spending nothing on young French teens that no one has ever heard of. Higuain from Real Madrid has been mentioned who then chose Napoli, Luis Suarez and even Wayne Rooney who has also been mentioned. But so far this summer with the end of the transfer window looming, all Arsenal have done is sign...yep, you guessed it, a French teenager. So what’s gone wrong? Through Wenger’s steady and accomplished management and lack of spending over the past decade, Arsenal have now nearly paid off their new stadium and should now be able to afford to buy world stars. Old habits die hard I guess. It doesn’t help when certain players are less than keen to join the club. But offering the chance to live in London and Champions League football should be enough of an incentive to bring players in. With a few additions Arsenal could challenge for the title, but I think without them their squad is a little thin in places. Arsenal’s attacking flair is one to be envied by any club in the world with the likes of Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Lucas Podolski. Podolski was supposed to be the poacher and score a lot of goals, and he hasn’t really done that. That Arsenal have been linked with both Suarez and Rooney says it all and Wenger obviously can see a problem there. In midfield there is Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and future England Captain Jack Wilshire and in
defense they have Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Koscielny and Gibbs. So one player comes in and two or three are about to leave (Gervinho to Roma and Chamakh to Crystal Palace). And suddenly Arsenal have a weaker squad than last year. Sure they’re a young side and one which is building in experience but with a couple of added stars they could really be a force this season. Wenger would argue that he has a good enough squad already and that the youngsters will step up to the mark. Maybe they will and this will be their year. But it’s been 6 years now without winning anything and for fans that’s a long time for a trophy drought. Luckily the fans have kept the faith with Wenger because of his previous work at Arsenal and with the retirement of Fergie from Manchester United, Arsene Wenger is the longest running manager now with 17 years under his wing. But how long can Wenger rely on the fans patience, if again, Arsenal don’t buy anyone of note and fail yet again in their perennial Mid February blues? This might just be the last season for Wenger if they end up trophy less once more.

Rooney Wayne Player Profile Age: 27 Born: Croxteth, Liverpool Marital Status: Married Salary: 15.61 million (2012) Club: Manchester United 96
Wayne Mark Rooney (born 24 October 1985) has been a dominant force in English football for a decade now. He’s widely regarded as the best English footballer (though Steven Gerrard might argue differently). He made his name at Everton where for two seasons he kept breaking records as a youngster. As soon as Arsene Wenger saw him he said ‘Rooney is the biggest England talent I’ve seen since I arrived in England. There has certainly not been a player under 20 as good as him since I became a manager here.” When it became clear that Rooney wouldn’t sign a new contract with Everton, 2 teams came in to buy him. Newcastle started the bidding war with a 20 million bid and Manchester United won by bidding 25.6 million. Despite leaving Everton, he insists he still supports Everton. “Once a Blue, always a Blue” and all that.
At the time there was a falling out with David Moyes the then Everton manager and now Manchester United manager. Moyes took Wayne Rooney to court 3 years ago for ‘making false claims’ in an extract from his book published in part in the Daily Mail. Wayne ended up paying him half a million in settlement. To be fair, Moyes did give the money to charity. At Manchester United, he became the youngest player in the Champions League to score a hat trick and was the youngest player to play for England. In the last decade he has dominated the back and front pages of the tabloids, from love with his wife Colleen, hair transplants and liaisons with hookers before and during his marriage. The first liaison back in 2004, he did admit that at that time “I was young and stupid. It was at a time
when I was very young and immature and before I had settled down with Coleen.” I’m not sure if he made any comment on the more recent 3some allegations but he certainly tried to get the courts to ban the reports. It didn’t work and the press had a field day. His form dropped as a result.
Back in 2010, Rooney wanted to leave because he felt undervalued. One of the only times I ever saw Fergie look weak was when he was discussing Rooney’s decision to go with absolute bewilderment. Fergie finally convinced Rooney to stay and kept being encouraging all season, with such quotes as ‘the best goal ever scored at Old Trafford’ and the like. But now with Fergie gone and Moyes saying Robin Van Persie is his number one striker, there’s talk once more of Rooney wanting to leave. You’d think United would have learned after the first incident but new managers do it their way.
Rooney remains popular with Manchester United fans and his name sells shirts with over 200,000 sold in one season. They love him because he is passionate and consistently scores. He can be a hot head and so knowing this he still boxes to take away the extra anger. When his anger has boiled over, it results in him being the most red-carded England player and usually in trouble with the English FA. During the 2010 World Cup, his anger boiled off to insult the England supporters after a weak draw with Algeria made them boo them off the park. “Nice to see your home fans boo you, that’s loyal supporters”. He quickly apologised. He tries to play the game fairly which is probably why he reacts so badly when a decision goes against him. “Everyone who watches me play knows I am an honest player, I play the game as honestly as I can. If the referee gives a penalty there is nothing you can do.” But anger often gives a player that edge you want on the football field, Ferguson knew that and he also knew how important it is to make Rooney feel appreciated. When Rooney doesn’t then he can start to look at pastures new.
Chelsea and Jose Mourinho hope to take advantage of Rooney’s disquiet. Chelsea have already bid 20 million for Rooney which surely must be a wind up, as he must be worth at least double that. On the 5th of August a bid of 30 million was rejected. I have a feeling that 40 million might get their man, especially if David Luiz leaves Chelsea for Barca for 40 mil as well. Mourinho has also said he will guarantee to play Rooney in his favoured position.
