Joey Essex The quintessential Essex boy in name and in nature, Joey Essex, has become one of the funniest and well-known names to have been exported from the area. Before leaving the show he was one of the main cast members from The Only Way Is Essex, but Joey is now miles away from home in Australia, participating in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, and is now favourite to win. Born in July 1990, the young reality star grew up in a loving home with his sister Frankie, who has also found fame in TOWIE, but his young life was tinged with sadness however when his mother died at an early age. His life was relatively normal until the producers of a new show came knocking and the rest, as they say, is history. Joey and his cousin Chloe Sims were asked to become part of the supporting cast for series 2 of the new hit ITV2 reality television show, The Only Way Is Essex and Joey soon became a hit with audiences and other cast members. His young, playful attitude endeared him towards female fans, while his cheeky chappy demeanour appealed to the male audience. In that second series, Joey dipped his feet into the dating pool of the female Essex cast and dated both Lucy Mecklenburgh and Sam Faiers but it was in the third series when he was promoted to series regular that his character truly shone. He has since become one of the favourites with fans of the TOWIE and can often be found doing guest appearances on other shows.

When TOWIE headed for Marbella in a summer special of The Only Way is Marbs, Joey and the cast descended on the coast with aplomb in June of last year. The cast lapped up the sun, copious amounts of champagne and were seen at various hot spots here including La Sala, Pangea and other various locations. During his time on TOWIE Joey found love with fellow cast member Sam Faiers and the

relationship between the two was played out onscreen. Unfortunately for the couple, their relationship ended in Marbella earlier this year and although they briefly reconciled in the last series which finished airing in November, the couple parted as Joey left for Australia.

Joey has been known throughout his career to say incredible one-liners and some comments that have shown him to look unintelligent and daft and when he appeared on Celebrity Juice with former flame Faiers, the comments were some of the funniest he has ever said. When asked by Lemon, during the quiz section of the show, what country borders Wales… Essex replied ‘Russia… or is it London’. These hilarious comments have since been labelled Joey-isms and possibly his most famous one to date is ‘Reem’, the word he uses to describe something that was great or cool.

8

A strong competitor on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Here, at the time of Lifestyle Magazine going to press he was favourite to win, and the show has been littered with Joey-isms. Some of the funniest include:

‘I’m not very good at confrontating people…’

‘It’s much easier to look at your phone though, isn’t it? I’ve got a watch, but watches are more like fashion, in’t they? My watch ain’t got numbers on it.’ ‘I told you I’m good at counting! I used to count all the time.’ ‘Don’t you think it’s weird when you look in the mirror and think – I haven’t seen myself in ages!’ “I’ve tried goat before...Goat cheese” “How many sides does a square have?...Six” (Eating an ostrich penis) ‘It tastes like a school rubber with wee, tomato sauce and vinegar on it’

(On eating another Celeb delicacy) ‘It tastes like Gut Pork’

Critics and fans alike are now saying that this show could make his career. His endearing nature and funny one-liners have shown the audience that Joey is a funloving, down-to-earth character and this is what makes him fantastic viewing. Following in the footsteps of former TOWIE member Mark Wright who was in the jungle two years ago, Joey could manage to catapult himself into the limelight following his great performance in the jungle.

Joey has been subject to many challenges on I’m A Celeb including the taste challenge in which he, and fellow competitor, tried a host of disgusting dishes including brains, testicles and a drink of blended cockroach….yuk!

His time on I’m A Celebrity has also stirred up many romantic rumours, many of those including his Celeb co-star Former Miss Universe Great Britain, Amy Willerton whom viewers have seen flirting with Joey. But his former flame, Sam and other TOWIE cast members believe that Joey still wants to try again with Miss Faiers and his friendly nature is all that the flirting really is.

y e o J ssex E

Littlewoods will all want to snap up the star when he gets back to the UK and with a reported payment of £200,000 that Joey will receive for his time in the jungle, he will surely be able to take his time and decide what is best for his own future.

Aside from his time on television, Joey opened his own clothes shop entitled Fusey (we have no idea either) in Brentwood which is often shown in TOWIE. Selling items that will appeal to his male fans and those who like to dress in Joey’s eclectic style, Fusey stands alongside other shops also opened by TOWIE stars including Lucy Mecklenburgh, Jessica Wright, and the Faiers sisters. Due to the success of Fusey, Joey has also released a perfume, My Girl and an aftershave, Fusey which has sold well since its release. It seems to viewers that Joey doesn’t always have a high intellect or even sometimes know exactly what he is doing but with his great fan following on TOWIE and his fantastic persona showing through on I’m A Celebrity we’re sure Joey will be approached by many other shows when he returns from the jungle. Indeed already there are rumours that Tesco, Very.com and 9

for your children!

Why are we all so determined to keep the magic going? “Everything’s so commercial now, it’s easy to be jaded” about the holidays, says mom Julie Tilsner, author of Planet Parenthood. “But to our children it’s all new and exciting and sincere. They love the lights, the smells, the songs.” And after all, what would the holidays be without the wonder of it all? Read on to get parents’ tips for making the season extra special for kids. Leave signs of Santa’s visit There’s no bigger Christmas mystery than Santa’s existence, so drop enough clues to help your children keep the faith. Leave crumbs everywhere, even on the gifts — Santa loves his biscuits. Also leave boot footprints leading up to the tree, as if Santa tracked it there. Imagine that Santa’s always in a hurry, so snag a small swatch of red felt near the tree, the fireplace, or anywhere he could have gotten stuck. Keeping the Santa myth alive is one way to let your kids be kids for a little longer. Kids grow up too fast. There’s an innocence that needs to be preserved that we’re losing earlier and earlier so why not go to the extreme. On Christmas Eve, sneak out to the front of the house, leave a present for your little one, and ring the bell. When your children open the door to find wrapped up pyjamas and a note that says, “Put on your jammies and get ready to go to bed. I’ll visit your home when you’re fast asleep. It builds excitement and then, of course, it’s easier to get them in their jammies and into bed.

12

HI II I H H

Surprise the youngsters The holidays are all about surprise, of course, but some parents take it a step further. Create a mini scavenger hunt on Christmas morning for your little ones. Have ornaments that the kids can open, and inside leave clues to where to find their big presents. Usually families wake up and open presents and it’s crazy and over so fast. This draws it out and makes it mysterious, too.

Channel your childhood If holidays past were particularly jolly, take inspiration from them to make your season bright. Do you still remember the personal visit from “Santa” — actually your father or grandfather when you were little. Santa would arrive right before you went to bed to give you a single gift. Now, you and your friends can recruit your husband’s to don Santa’s red suit at an annual party. The kids love it, and with so many people around, there’s little chance that they’ll notice that one of the dads is missing.

Let kids take the spotlight

I

Let the youngest child who can read — or at least recognize names — get the enviable task of passing out presents. On Christmas, it’s always ‘What am I getting?’ and this way, for that child, it’s also about the big honor. Let your children host massive, daylong cookie-making parties. Have the kids’ best friends come over and make a big mess. They go to town decorating their cookies, without much interference from parents.

H

I

H

H H

Be generous Focussing on gift-giving, rather than receiving makes the season much more wonderful and meaningful for your kids. If buying for friends, make a big deal of wrapping them up and giving them away. It’s always magical.

Bend the rules Children spend so much time learning how to behave appropriately that it’s a special, exciting treat to let loose. They’re always being told to keep quiet so on New Year’s Eve give your child a big pot and tell them that they are aloud to make as much noise as they want. Having a fun film night over the holiday season? Let the children stay up extra late, why not, it’s the holidays. Hopefully this will make them sleep in in the morning giving you some well earned rest. 13

Extravagant The world’s most Christmas Gifts

For the girl who loves bling We all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but what do you get a girl whose jewellery boxes are already bursting with sparklers? Well, how about a really, really big diamond? Lucky for you, then, that Liz Taylor’s jewels are up for auction at Christies New York on 13 and 14 December - just in time for Christmas!

Why not treat your loved one to something special this Christmas? But to afford any of these indulgent gifts, most of us would have to win the lottery first!

For the toy car geek Collecting toy cars may not seem like a particularly extravagant hobby, but you’d be wrong. If money was no object we’d recommend you get your toy car geek a scaled model of the Lamborghini Aventador. This scaled down model is decorated with platinum and gold and has diamond headlights and wheel-trims! It’s up for auction this December starting price of a mere €3.5 million.

For the girl who likes to look her best

For the

classic car lover

For the girl who always takes care of her appearance, fly over to the Urban Retreat at Harrods and book the World’s Most Expensive Blow Dry. Using diamond and meteor dust this treatment will give her a hair-do that’s out of this world. Included in the price are a bottle each of Truffle Shampoo and Conditioner. All for the bargain price of £320.

If your loved one is obsessed with classic cars, there are some real gems out there. We’re sorry to tell you that you’ve just missed out on this 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa. This car was the 250 Testa Rossa prototype, and in its heyday, competed in the Le Mans 24-hour race. It sold at auction in California for $16.4 million in August.

For the self indulgent

For the party animal Is your loved one bored of receiving fine wine and vintage champagne at Christmas? Well never fear, luxury designer Leon Verres has come to the rescue with this extravagant tipple. The 5 litres of fine Russian vodka have been repeatedly filtered through millions of pounds worth of diamonds. And the bottle itself is encrusted with 3,000 of the beauties. Named ‘Billionaire Vodka’, it will set you back just $37.7 million. Let’s party! 16

It takes a whole field of roses to make one 30ml bottle of Tribute Attar by Amouage. It also contains silver frankincense from the Dhofar mountains. Just a few drops last for hours. That’s good news, considering this tiny bottle costs £335.

For the adventurer For the adventurer in your life - that loved one who always dreamed of being an astronaut - how about a trip on the Virgin Galactic? After 2 days of training, they’ll board a spacecraft and travel through the atmosphere at 3000mph - nearly 4 times the speed of sound. Then they’ll experience weightlessness and view the earth as we’ll only ever get to see it on the TV, returning home in time for tea. What an experience for just $200,000!

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON DRIVING IN WINTER Línea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions. With respect to the car: 1. Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels. 2. Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm. 3. Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency. With respect to driving: 1. If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds. 2. If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding. 3. Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. 4. When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

Da Bruno Mijas-Costa Celebrate their First Anniversary!

After almost twenty years since the opening of Da Bruno in Marbella, Giancarlo Paparusso, the son of the owners, and his wife Alexandra, decided to take the quality of the well-known restaurant group to Mijas. This new addition to the Da Bruno family maintains the core values of top quality and hospitality, while bringing in their own style to offer the best service. For Giancarlo, a restaurant is a place where the client should feel welcome and relaxed. “We work every day to innovate and surprise all of our first time visitors as well as those who repeat. In Da Bruno Mijas-Costa they will feel at home and enjoy a unique experience.” The cuisine offered at Da Bruno Mijas-Costa combines the best of traditional Mediterranean cuisine with more cutting edge gastronomy, creating a perfect balance. From the “non-stop” kitchen, open from midday to midnight, dishes are made using fresh and seasonal ingredients and to each diners needs. The high quality of cuisine includes an incredible variety of choices ensuring there is something for everybody. The pizzas are crispy, the fish is fresh, the

meat is succulent and the pasta - amazing, but the biggest seller is without a doubt the Pil-Pil Prawns, which are cooked in a lightly spiced, olive oil sauce. Da Bruno Mijas-Costa is located in the Commercial Center “Centro IDEA”, right next to SEAT on the MijasFuengirola road. The inside dining area is beautifully decorated creating a friendly atmosphere perfect for celebrations, company dinners or any kind of event with room for 120 diners. The daily menu, at €15, also lives up to the same quality that defines Da Bruno and can be enjoyed inside or on the sheltered court yard next to the palm trees. In 2014, the Da Bruno Group celebrates their 20th anniversary and has proved to be a gastronomic hot spot, with six restaurants at some of the best places of the coast: Da Bruno Sul Mare, Da Bruno Pasta and Da Bruno A Casa in Marbella, Da Bruno Cabopino, Da Bruno San Pedro and Da Bruno Mijas-Costa. “We invite everyone to share unforgettable moments in Da Bruno, it is a pleasure for us to serve you by offering the best of our kitchen and the best of ourselves,” says Giancarlo Paparusso.

Getting a number one in the music charts for Christmas has always been at the top of a musician’s hopes, and traditionally it has been novelty songs, charity songs or songs with a Christmas theme. In recent years of course, the media machine that is The X Factor has also topped the festive charts with five of the winners in recent years all taking that treasured number one spot (and some of those will really shock you!). Since the beginning of the charts in 1952, it was customarily the biggest selling single of the year that became the Christmas number one, but it was in 1973 when the band Slade released Merry Xmas Everybody in a deliberate attempt to gain that top spot that musicians

changed their attitude to the Christmas charts and timed their single releases for the merry period. Some of the biggest names in musical history have topped the charts in the last 60 years including Cliff Richard (four times at number 1, no surprise there really), Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, The Beatles

(who have sat at the coveted spot no less than four times) and Queen - both times with Bohemian Rhapsody, which is the only record to appear twice with the same band, in 1975 and 1991. George Michael is the only singer so far to have sat at the number one and number two spot, with Band Aid and Wham! in 1984 while The Beatles are the only act who have managed this feat twice, in 1963 and 1967. Of course, one of the biggest Christmas anthems is the song Do They Know Its Christmas which has appeared three times for three generations of Band Aid,

and indeed the original version of this song is the second biggest selling song in UK history. (For those of you who are as curious as we were, the biggest UK selling single is Elton John’s Candle in the Wind, and the biggest selling single worldwide is White Christmas by Bing Crosby.) In the 1990’s there were appearances from some very talented musicians including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Westlife and The Spice Girls who appeared in three consecutive years. However, in 1993 and 2000, the British public seemed to have lost all sanity for a second when Mr Blobby and Bob the Builder both topped the charts!

2002 started the music reality craze and the best-selling reality group in history, Girls Aloud smashed the number one spot with Sound of the Underground, a song that started a craze with

young girls across the land. Three years later and X Factor mania had begun, during the second series a young man named Shayne Ward took the hearts of many viewers who promptly voted him as the winner and his single That’s My Goal topped the number one spot in the charts. For the next three years, X Factor winners made their mark in the Christmas charts with Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson (the first Scottish act to have a Christmas number one) and Alexandra Burke.

However, all was about to change when, in December 2009, British DJ Jon Morter and his wife started a Facebook campaign to stop The X Factor gaining the Christmas top spot and instead to put Rage Against the Machine in the soughtafter position. Despite being named a crazy and stupid act of rebellion by X Factor creator Simon Cowell, the song Killing in the Name took the number one spot that year, pushing Joe McElderry to second place.

24

The X Factor fans did not take the campaign laying down and the following year, they made sure that Matt Cardle took the Christmas charts with When We Collide but it seems that is where the X Factor mania may end. Musicians and fans alike for the last two years have decided to back the artists who have created songs to highlight a particular incident or situation. In 2011, the Military Wives with Gareth Malone proudly received the top spot for their song Wherever You Are, and last year, The Justive Collective, made up of many different musicians, singers and football personnel who set up the band in honour of The Hillsborough Disaster, won the spot.

However bets have definitely been made on Lily Allen, who has covered Keane’s Somewhere Only we Know for the John Lewis advert and The X Factor, who may prove successful yet again. Not only will this year’s winner be hoping for the top spot, but previous winners, James Arthur and Little Mix, are also releasing singles in the week before Christmas.

Who is your bet on? The question remains as to who will take the title position this year and already there is much speculation and perspective candidates. Britain’s Got Talent finalists Richard and Adam are releasing I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In (On Christmas Day); the groups from ITV2’s Big Reunion, 911, Blue, 5ive, Atomic Kitten, Liberty X and B*witched will sing a cover of Wizzard’s 1973 hit I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday; and Susan Boyle has recorded a posthumous duet with Elvis Presley covering O Come, All Ye Faithful.

Christina Aguilera

loses some serious weight

Christina Aguilera, 32, looks better than ever! At the 2013 American Music Awards, held in Los Angeles on Nov. 24, she looked amazing in a super sexy, white cut out dress. She showed off her amazing figure after a reported 50 pound weight loss! Christina’s apparently avoids empty calories like alcohol and saves comfort food for very special occasions. Instead of pancakes, she chooses blueberries, turkey bacon, and half an avocado for a filling breakfast. She loves celery with almond butter and shrimp cocktails as snacks. For lunch, she chooses the ever-popular chicken breast over salad. She skips creamy dressings like ranch or blue cheese. For dinner, She has either chicken or fish curry. One year on, the transformation is outstanding. Just check out what she looked like this time last year!

Miranda Kerr hiding money & Leo DiCaprio? Is Kris Kardashian

from her husband?

?

A story promises to reveal all of Kris Jenner’s “darkest secrets” in US tabloid, Star magazine. The report alleges that she’s so paranoid about losing her money ( as we all know how money orientated she is!) in the split from husband Bruce Jenner that she’s hiding millions of dollars from him. It’s claimed the couple have no prenup and Kris is terrified of giving up any of her $175 million fortune to Bruce. Surely with all he has had to put up with in that marriage, you can not put a price on what he deserves. It alleges over recent months she’s been switching as much of her own money as she can into the names of her daughters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, to keep it in the Kardashian family. The article adds: “She’s already planning to transfer $25 million in Kim’s name alone, and Kim has no problem with that. She’s just as greedy as her mom!”

Are they dating? Whether this is true or not, it seems as shame that Miranda and Orlando Bloom are calling a day on their marriage. The couple have been married for just over three years and have a son together however at the end of last month, Miranda and Leonardo DiCaprio were seen dining out together. It hasn’t even been a month since Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom and his former Victoria’s secret stunner wife Miranda Kerr announced their separation and it looks like she has moved on already. The 30-year-old Kerr was spotted cosying up to 39-year-old Titanic actor Leonardo DiCaprio while having dinner in Las Vegas. “They looked like they were having a great time. They came with a bunch of friends and were overheard talking about going out the night before,” a source told E! News. Well, Leo is known to only date supermodels so this could be one to keep a watch on. However, wouldn’t it be great if Miranda and Orlando could rekindle their romance, after all they make such a lovely couple! 29

Angelina Jolie vs Sandra Bullock Two of the most successful actress’ in Hollywood have been battling for the leading role to star alongside George Clooney in intense space film Gravity. The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts who survive the mid-orbit destruction of a Space Shuttle and attempt to return to Earth. Sandra Bullock landed the role and reportedly beat Angelina Jolie to be casted in the blockbuster. Angie hoped Gravity would give her the critical acclaim her career has been lacking and sources say it would have put her back on the map to win an oscar. “Angie was livid when she lost the part to Sandra because she knew it was a great opportunity. It was known as Angie’s movie, but when the project switched studios, the part was up for grabs and Sandra snatched it,” a source tells tabloids.

Nigella Lawson took cocaine and other drugs every day for years, court has been told! Former assistants accused of defrauding TV cook of £300,000 on luxuries, including designer clothes and first-class air travel between 2008 and 2012. In November, a London court heard that Nigella Lawson had become a daily drug user, taking cocaine as well as class B drugs and prescription medicines over more than a decade. Her former husband, Charles Saatchi, after hearing about the allegations of her drug use, described her as “Higella” in an angry email, part of which was read out in court. He also accused her of poisoning her 19-year-old daughter Cosima with drugs and ‘trashing her life’.

exposes belly in unflattering lycra sports bra! The mum-of-one admits her stomach is “my main problem area” but refuses to give up her crave for takeaways.

She seems confident enough to workout in public wearing minimal clothing as she stepped out in the unflattering purple lycra outfit which showed her plunging cleavage and post-pregnancy belly. She’s previously admitted her saggy baby belly is her biggest insecurity but the mother-of-one has kick started her new fitness regime to feel better about herself. Lunging and jumping in the leafy Queen’s Park, London, the mum of 17-month-old daughter Dolly even used a kettle ball for exercises with personal trainer Adrian. Speaking about her body , Chantelle said: “I’m not going on any fad diet. I’m a little overweight and it would be nice to get rid of some of it. I’m not putting any pressure on myself. My stomach is my main problem area.”

It’s so nice to hear when celebrities use their high status to raise money for a great cause and to help those in need. While the star is raising awareness and money by launching an eBay sale for the recent victims of the typhoon that struck the Philippines, Kim isn’t donating ALL the proceeds to charity. Disaster struck the Philippines when a typhoon claimed thousands of victims and left many struggling for basic medical care. Reality star Kim Kardashian is using her fame to help those in need by auctioning off her designer clothes and accessories on eBay — But it’s unclear where 90% of the proceeds are going as the star is only donating 10 percent of the proceeds to the non-profit organisation, International Medical Corps.

Kim & Kanye’s strange prenuptial agreement

While rumours continue to circulate that the Kim Kardashian-Kanye West wedding will be filmed for television, we now have an update on an alleged prenuptial agreement that has been reached between both halves of the famous couple. And it includes some unusual clauses. To wit, sources claim there’s a “cheating clause” and a “drug clause” in the document, along with a clause that states Kris Jenner cannot have any input in Kim’s career. Moreover, there’s reportedly a plastic surgery clause as well, one that actually prohibits Kim from going under the knife.

Make-up trends

this party season With the Christmas party season coming up, there’s a range of on-trend make-up looks, from the simple to the more dramatic, that will help you stand out from the crowd. Here’s a few to make you feel glam, and some tips on how to get the look just right.

Draw the line Black eyeliner is hot this season and is a must-have staple item for any make-up bag. Go all out with 60s inspired thick lines and flicks on the top and bottom lashes. Then a simple skinny line along the top lashes is also a key trend for this season.

Last night’s eye make-up Metallic eyes This season the metallic look has once again made its way into the style crowd and is a great way to really make an entrance at that Christmas party. Be daring and go for a plum hue, or Christmas it up with purple. Feeling less brave? Then a gunmetal shade is perfect.

We love this look, which takes inspiration from the ‘up all night’ 80s trend and is perfect for those of us who aren’t getting too much sleep at the moment, although this is probably more down to our little ones or that pregnancy insomnia rather than painting the town red. This is basically what it says on the make-up tin, showing off super smudgy black eyeliner under the eyes – think the morning look.

Luscious lips

Glitter

It’s time to lock lips with stained effect lippy, with this season paying homage to the matt lips look. Shown off on the catwalks of Christian Dior and Prada, to name a few, this trend demands dark berry hues with a bolder outer lip liner.

No festive make-up round up would be complete without some glitter and it seems Chanel agrees, applying large silver glitter particles to upper eyelids and the lashes. Get a more subtle look by investing in a pot of Silver Loose Glitter Dust. Add mascara and some subtle colour on the cheeks and you’re good to go.

The powder is formulated with virtually “weightless microparticles,” which have been designed to help texturize your hair’s surface and give your roots lift in “10 seconds.” All you have to do is shake the product into your hands (you won’t see it but will feel it in your palms) and run your hands through your strands for an instant volume boost.

Fitness Foods Avocados

The cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated fat in these green health bombs can help keep your body strong and pain free. University of Buffalo researchers found that competitive runners who ate less than 20 per cent fat were more likely to suffer injuries than those who consumed at least 31 per cent. It has been speculated that the problem is linked to extreme lowfat diets, which weaken muscles and joints. A few slices of avocado a day are a great way to boost fat for those who are fat shy.

Bananas

Thanks to bananas’ high potassium content, peeling one is a speedy solution to that stitch in your side. While a lack of sodium is the main culprit behind muscle cramps, studies show potassium plays a supporting role: You need it to replace sweat losses and help with fluid absorption. Bananas are also packed with energizing carbohydrates. One mediumsize fruit has 400 milligrams of potassium and as many carbs (29 grams) as two slices of whole-wheat bread.

Berries

USDA researchers recently placed fresh berries on their list of the 20 foods richest in antioxidants. Just a handful of blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries is an excellent source of these potent nutrients, which protect muscles from free radical damage that might be caused by exercise. Shop for berries by the shade of their skin: The deeper the colour, the healthier the fruit. 52

Carrots

Close your eyes and they almost taste like crunchy candy. Carrots pack complex carbs that provide energy to muscles and potassium to control blood pressure and muscle contractions. And a half cup has just 35 calories.

Whole Grain Cereal

Looking for something to nosh before you hit the gym? Raid your cereal stash. The healthiest brands contain endurance-boosting complex carbs and musclebuilding protein. Sixty minutes before a workout, fuel up with a 200-calorie snack: cup of whole-grain cereal with 4 ounces of fat-free milk. “When you eat something before exercising, you have more energy, so you can work out harder and perhaps longer. And you’ll be less likely to overeat afterward.

Chicken Thighs

Skimp on iron and zinc and your energy will flag. Cooking up some juicy chicken thighs or turkey drumsticks is the best way to get more of both. Darkmeat poultry is significantly lower in fat than red meat yet has all the iron, zinc, and B vitamins that we need in our diets.

Hummus

Complex carbohydrates, protein, and unsaturated fats – all the right elements needed to fuel activity meet in one healthy little 70-calorie, 3-tablespoon package. Plus, hummus is often made with olive oil, which contains oleic acida fat that helps cripple the gene responsible for 20 to 30 per cent of breast cancers.

Eggs

Don’t skip the yolk. One egg a day supplies 215 milligrams of cholesterol, not enough to push you over the 300-milligram daily cholesterol limit recommended by the American Heart Association. Plus, the yolk is a good source of iron, and it’s loaded with lecithin, critical for brain health.

Chocolate Milk

There’s way more to milk than just calcium. In fact, it’s a damn near perfect food, giving you a lot of valuable energy while keeping your calorie count low. The chocolate kind is loaded with calcium, vitamins, and minerals just like the plain stuff, but new studies confirm that milk with a touch of cocoa is as powerful as commercial recovery drinks at replenishing and repairing muscles.

Salmon

Great for heart health, but here’s an added twist: New studies are suggesting that monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fats might help lessen abdominal fat. It’s too soon to understand the link, but this could be particularly good if you’re working to tone your core.

3 Healthy Soups

for Staying Slim

When the weather turns brisk, there’s nothing cosier than a big bowl of hot soup. Autumn is the perfect time to warm the kitchen with stove-cooked soups made with the season’s harvest of squashes, pumpkin, cabbage and root vegetables. Just because we are coming into winter doesn’t mean we have to indulge in heavy and fatty foods which will make us pile on the pounds. Skip canned soups that are packed with sodium and other hard-to-pronounce ingredients and try one of these easy recipes. Each pot simmers with good-for-you nutrients and offers a satisfying, low-calorie meal.

Northwestern-style lentil chili

Red pepper bisque

Mushroom and barley soup

This hearty and healthy stew gets added zing from a dash of chili powder, but the recipe’s real all-star ingredient is a humble legume: lentils! The fibre-rich lentil is low in fat and helps keep the calorie count down (191 calories per serving).

Crunchy, sweet bell peppers and crisp yellow onions are liquefied into a brilliantly colored puree. Teeming with antioxidants and clocking in at only 60 calories per serving, this tasty concoction is truly healthy comfort food . Make it a complete meal with a side of whole grains and mixed greens.

Cozy up to this warm mushroom and barley soup, which calls for only a handful of easy-to-find ingredients. Nutty grains of barley give the soup a chewy texture, and plenty of veggies ensure this remains a satisfying low-cal treat.

Ingredients: Olive oil cooking spray 1 c. diced onion 1 clove garlic, minced 4 c. low-sodium V8 1 potato, washed and diced 1 c. dry lentils 1 c. carrots , diced 2 tsp. chili powder 6 tbsp. nonfat sour cream Directions: Generously spray a large pot or Dutch Oven with olive oil spray or use a teaspoon of olive oil. Heat over medium-high heat. Saute the onion and garlic until lightly golden, about 2 or 3 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer on low until the lentils and vegetables are tender, around 20-25 minutes. Serve chili in bowls and garnish the top of each one with a tbsp. of sour cream. We recommend serving this chili with your favourite steamed vegetables.

Ingredients: 1 c. yellow onions 2 tbsp. garlic, chopped 24 oz. vegetable stock 3 c. red bell peppers 1/4 c. basil, chopped 2 tbsp. fresh thyme 1 tsp. sea salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper Directions: In a pot, saute sliced onions and chopped garlic until soft. Add vegetable stock and roasted bell peppers . Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Season soup with salt and pepper. Fill a blender half full, and blend until smooth. Repeat blending until all soup is blended. Reheat soup and serve hot.

Ingredients: 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 yellow onion, chopped 3 carrots , peeled and chopped 3 c. mushrooms, sliced 3 cans low-sodium vegetable broth 1 c. barley, cooked Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Heat the olive oil in a pot over medium heat. Add onion and carrots, cooking until soft. Add mushrooms and cook until soft. Then add vegetable broth and barley, simmering for 10 minutes. Stir until mixture is blended. Winter Health Keep healthy this new year with the best winter supplements Cold weather months are notorious for colds, flus, bouts of low energy, and extra fatigue. Fight off germs and malaise with the best winter supplements. Natural supplements can boost the immune system and prepare the body for winter. Try these cold weather remedies to stay healthy and alleviate unpleasant symptoms.

Boost the immune system

Detoxify the body

A weak immune system leaves the body vulnerable to all the bugs that people share along with presents and holiday cheer. Vitamin A is crucial for a strong immune system and aids in tissue repair. It is also important for good eyesight. Men may benefit from 700 micrograms daily and women may take 600 micrograms.

Herbs help to rid the body of toxins, which improves overall health and helps the body to function optimally, especially the liver. Dandelion is a good liver tonic. Try it in tea or in a tincture.

Selenium is an essential mineral and antioxidant that boosts the immune system and may help protect against cancer. It is a common ingredient in multivitamins. Take 200 micrograms daily. Vitamin C is a well-known friend to the immune system. Taking vitamin C helps the immune system fight off colds, but it also may help people who are currently ill get better faster. Echinacea is perhaps the most famous supplement for battling bugs. This supplement comes from a native North American plant. It has antibiotic and anti-viral properties. Some herbalists call echinacea a blood purifier. It may contribute to more white blood cells that help to fight infections. Not everyone likes the taste of echinacea. Those who do can take lozenges and teas, but others can try tinctures and tablets, or take elderberry extract as an alternative. Elderberry is a traditional remedy for colds and flus. 56

Alcohol and holiday festivities go hand in hand, which results in damage to the cells of the liver. An ingredient in milk thistle called silymarin aids in repairing liver cells and could stimulate new cell growth. Fight bloating and ingestion from all the extra winter eating with cynara artichoke, which stimulates bile production. The supplement may also aid growth of good bacteria in the intestines. So try and work some of these healthy supplements into your diet this winter for an illness free Christmas and New Year.

Winter Blues A wistful feeling comes over us in late autumn, as the last remaining leaves drop and the sun sets earlier each day. Thoughts of Christmas getting closer and the warmth of a favourite old coat may be all you need to face the coming winter with good cheer, but for many people, autumn melancholy deepens to winter depression. Many things, including brain chemicals, ions in the air, and genetics seem to be involved in winter depression. But researchers agree that people who suffer from winter depression – also known as “seasonal affective disorder,” a term that produces the cute acronym SAD – have one thing in common. They’re particularly sensitive to light, or the lack of it.

Winter depression is still a mystery to scientists who study it. But researchers agree that people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder are particularly sensitive to light, or the lack of it. You don’t have to live with depression Many studies have shown that people with seasonal affective disorder feel better after exposure to bright light. It seems simple enough: In higher latitudes, winter days are shorter, so you get less exposure to sunlight. Replace lost sunlight with bright artificial light, and your mood improves. But it’s actually far more complex. Alfred Lewy, MD, a seasonal affective disorder researcher at the Oregon Health & Science University, says it’s not only a matter of getting light, but also getting it at the right time. “The most important time to get light is in the morning,” he says.

He thinks seasonal affective disorder is due to a “phase-shift” of the circadian rhythm. The wall clock may tell you it’s time to get up and at ‘em, but your body’s internal clock says you should be resting. Bright light in the morning resets your circadian clock. So as the winter draws near, brighten up your room, maybe invest in sheer curtains in your bedroom to let in the morning sun in and make the most of getting out in the fresh air rather than staying cooped up at home or in your office. It really can make the world of difference. Being lucky enough to live down here on the coast leaves you no excuse.

Best Cures

The festive season brings so much fun. Parties, family gatherings, work do’s etc. However, with all the fun comes the dreaded hangover! Surely there has to be something out there to ease the headache, nausea, and overall sense of feeling like rubbish. We have researched a list of hangover remedies and actually tried them to find out what really works. While the research on this topic is limited and there’s no one solution to fix all the symptoms of a hangover, a few things can help alleviate specific problems. The next time you have one too many, here’s what can make the next day at least somewhat less horrendous.

9 Water

Water is a must. As you likely know from the frequent trips to the bathroom during a night of heavy drinking, alcohol is a diuretic and can cause dehydration. Before falling into bed, down as much water as you can, according to the Mayo Clinic. And the next time you go out, they recommend ordering a glass of water with every alcoholic drink – and alternate between the two to replace lost fluids as you go.

9 More Alcohol “Hair of the Dog”

It will provide a numbing effect, but all you’re doing is prolonging the inevitable, and it will likely make your headache worse. Another reason to avoid cracking open a cold one: Experts agree that if you use this “cure,” the risk of abuse increases and could lead to alcohol dependency.

9 Toast or Crackers

For unbearable hangovers when you cannot stomach anything. This is also good advice for adults who’ve spent the night hugging the porcelain throne. While no food can halt the roller coaster in your stomach, carbs can help bring your blood sugar levels back up the morning after, Dr. Hall-Flavin says. Normally when blood sugar levels dip, your liver reacts by producing more glucose from stored carbs. But if you’ve been drinking too much, your liver is busy metabolizing the alcohol and can’t handle the extra work, so your blood sugar levels stay down, and you can feel irritable and tired. 61

9 Coffee

Lots of people, hungover or not, use a cup of coffee to wake up and feel alert at work. But a trip to the local cafe won’t give you lasting benefits, and caffeine can both treat and cause headaches and migraines, so this one is a personal preference. If you do down a cup, be sure to drink water, too, since studies suggest caffeine causes dehydration.

9 Greasy Food

What you eat after drinking doesn’t matter, it’s what you eat before that can help lessen the pain the next day. Food helps slow the absorption of alcohol, and the longer it takes the alcohol to reach your blood stream, the longer it is until you become intoxicated.

9 Pain Medication

Ease a pounding head with a pill (or two, depending on the recommended dosage), but stick to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen). Any other pain medication when combined with a liver that’s working overtime to metabolize alcohol, can cause liver damage or be deadly, says Dena Davidson, Ph.D., former associate professor of psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine.

9 Vitamins

If you normally take a multi, go ahead, but no studies have found that any particular vitamins do anything for a hangover. And one night of intoxication isn’t enough to throw off the levels of nutrients in your body to the point where you need to worry.

9 Exercise

One drink, a 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of a spirit is metabolized by your body in about an hour, so the whole “sweat it out” theory is a myth. At the same time, the endorphin release could boost your mood. And burning off a few calories may ease your guilt about how much you drank. Just be sure you keep your water bottle handy so you don’t become even more dehydrated.

9 The Best Cure: Prevention

Drink responsibly. But just in case you forgot: Limit your drinks to about one every hour. Your body metabolizes each beer (or wine or shot) in about 60 to 75 minutes, Dr. Hall-Flavin says. Drink faster, and your blood alcohol level rises faster. Eat before you drink and follow Dr. Hall-Flavin’s “I’ll have a beer and a glass of water” rule when ordering, and drink the water, don’t let it just sit on the table. And how’s this for sobering: In research, “moderate drinking” by a man is defined as two drinks a day. More than five in one sitting is considered “heavy drinking.” So think before you order that extra round. 63

Sports Drinks

and the role of electrolytes It has been 50 years since the sports drink was introduced to athletes in the United States. The first sports drink, Bengal Punch, was given to athletes at Louisiana State University in 1958. Gatorade, the most recognizable name in sports drinks, debuted the following decade at the University of Florida and revolutionised the way athletes energise and re-hydrate themselves during a sporting event. Since then, other sports drinks similar to Gatorade have been introduced to the market. These drinks are incredibly popular with adult and teen athletes, as well as beverage consumers in general. The main ingredients that sports drinks contain which enhance athletic performance are electrolytes, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Replenishment of Electrolytes Electrolytes are salts that are naturally part of body fluids. Electrolytes are lost through the sweat. If electrolytes are lost too quickly, the body does not have the ability to restore them as rapidly as they were lost. Sports drinks contain electrolytes such as chloride, sodium, and potassium to help replenish what was lost through sweat. Introducing electrolytes back into the body helps keep dehydration from occurring. Electrolytes maintain the electric voltage throughout your cells so that signals can pass easily. Several bodily functions are dependent on this electrical communication that electrolytes help carry. They include regulating nerve and muscle function, acidity levels and fluid levels. An imbalance of electrolytes have dire consequences. For example, bicarbonate is an electrolyte that is responsible for regulating muscles like the heart. Insufficient levels of bicarbonate would result in irregular heart beats, which may be fatal. A person who is exerting energy can quickly become dehydrated, in as little as 30 minutes. Therefore, it is suggested that athletes begin drinking a sports drink which is fortified with potassium and sodium before they start their activity.

66

Electrolytes and their importance to the human body is undeniable. The body functions and systems they support are vitally extensive. It is difficult for our bodies to survive without them. But with better knowledge and understanding, we can learn to easily replace them.

Why is water not enough for hydration in sport? Water may quench thirst, but it doesn’t replenish any of the lost electrolytes, carbohydrates, vitamins or minerals that sports drinks can. Although all of these things are lost during sweating, they can also be lost through urination. Water causes more frequent urination than sports drinks do. Therefore, sports drinks not only replenish these important electrolytes, carbohydrates, vitamins or minerals, they also can help the body hold on to the ones they already have for a longer period of time. The main ingredient in any sports drink is, of course, water. Water is important for re-hydration. The additional ingredients in sports drinks make them a better choice than water alone for athletes and others who exert a lot of energy and need to replenish the essential nutrients that have been quickly depleted in their bodies.

Christmas Decorations Decorating your house at Christmas is, in our opinion, one of the best things to do in December… even though, we started thinking about baubles and door wreaths in mid-September. Whether you are a family that prefers the traditional gold, green and red colours or something a little more modern such as bright blue or all white, there are certain aspects you can include into your decoration so that your house is suitably attired for Santa’s visit. While ultimately Christmas is about the children, there’s nothing more satisfying than having your guests admiring your decorations… especially if they are handmade.

The Christmas Tree The top trends for Christmas Trees this year include whimsical colours of lavender, pink and champagne gold; fun and young with colours of red and white and scattered with candy canes; an elegant style of cream and gold; and lastly full of fun – let your kids get involved and add every type of tree decoration you can… if you do decide on the last option, we’d recommend giving it a quick tweak once the kids are asleep so as not to give your guests a fright on Christmas Day.

The Door Wreath Surprisingly, this is one of the best things we like about Christmas decorations, as it is the first decoration your friends and neighbours see when coming to your house for a mulled wine or two. A wreath is something that you can easily make at home and incorporate 70

your own style into it. Collect long twigs of rosemary and tie them into a circle with a pretty red bow and you have a stylish and original wreath; or alternatively, head a little off the traditional circle design and create something long and teardrop in shape with fern, real or fake, and various decorations including berries, dried fruits and cinnamon sticks.

Christmas Lights Now this is one aspect of Christmas decorations that we find very controversial… while we love driving past the houses that absolutely cover their facades with every colour and type of Christmas light available, we simply cannot fathom

wanting to decorate our house this way. But if that is your style, then hats off to you because it can look fantastic. Our way may be a little boring but white and gold lights, in our opinion, looks simply stunning. Trail them around trees and long bushes outside, and adorn curtain rails or stair rails inside for a magical appearance.

Festive tables Choosing the decorations for your table can be a stressful business, there are so many types of decorations that you can use and many of them you can make at home! So get the kids involved and create a table that will have your guests gawking in awe. With all your fatter candles that have sat on mantelpieces not even being lit throughout the year‌ grab a large cardboard box and some metallic glitter spray and you have some gorgeous glittery candles for the table. For those skinny candles, get some sprigs of evergreen and laurel leaves and stuff them into candle holders before putting the candle in and in an instant they are transformed into gorgeous Christmas decorations. Lastly, for those table settings‌ get some red card and cut them out into a holly shape, write the guests name in gold or silver and you have some wonderful place settings. Whatever you decide for your Christmas decorations, the main thing about decorating the house is to have fun and enjoy the decorating process! 71

Winter Warmers

Well we have had it very good up until now but winter is definitely here. Oh the feel of icy marble beneath your feet when you get up in the morning! Spanish properties can feel much colder than those of our home countries as here the properties tend to cater for the warmer months, with finer window dressings and tiled or marble floors. We could insulate walls but this may be a larger job than you would prefer to undertake especially if your property is just a holiday home and used mainly in the summer.

Just the look of a rug on the floor instantly gives a warmer feel and to have a small bedside rug to step onto can make all the difference until you find your slippers in the night. Remember your rugs can be rolled up and put away for the summer when they are not needed. www.masalgueiro.pt have a beautiful range of rugs from short piles to shaggy, wool, cotton and silk which are beautiful materials and lovely to walk on, however, cleaning is not always as easy. Perhaps a mixture of synthetic and natural fibres will be your choice. There are so many sizes and styles to choose from. If you are not sure of the style or size, we at White Design Company are happy for you to try them in your property before you commit to any particular one. This is only one of our suppliers for rugs, we have many more in stock. Animal prints are also back in fashion. Look for the Skins collection with MA Salgueiro, original sheepskin, leather and original cow skin. Last but not least there is also a great collection of outdoor rugs

particularly useful in areas with glass curtains. Concerning your windows, think about layering we lose so much heat around the window area. We can add a heavier curtain or line the ones you already have. The lining can often be added temporarily if need be. We don’t always have the storage space for winter and summer curtains so layering is another idea, if it is feasible. We have many suggestions and we can accommodate for whatever look you prefer. Visit the showroom in La Cala de Mijas, situated between the BP petrol station and the farmacia, opposite Lidl and we can discuss your requirements. Have you thought about bioalcohol fires. We have beautiful fire bowls that can be used indoors and out to give a beautiful ambience as well as warming your room. There is a huge range to chose from in amazing designs.

So keep warm this winter, and we will see you soon.

Gammon with Cider & Cinnamon Try this delicious gammon as an alternative to the traditional turkey this Christmas... Gammon and coriander seeds have a time-honoured partnership. In this recipe we have added some extra flavours. Using both cider and apple juice, and adding a bite of red chilli to the flavour of the coriander seeds adds a real sparkle to this dish.

Ingredients

(Serves 6)

• 1.2kg/2lb 10oz boneless gammon joint (unsmoked or smoked) • 500ml/17fl oz cider • 1 litre/1¾ pints cloudy apple juice • 2 sharp green apples, cored and cut into rough chunks • 2 x 8cm/3¼in pieces cinnamon stick • 3-4 fresh red chillies, seeds removed, cut into quarters • 1 tbsp coarsely crushed coriander seeds For the glaze and sauce • 1 tbsp demerara sugar, or to taste • ¼ tsp chilli powder • 1 heaped tbsp cornflour To serve • Sautéed red cabbage with cumin seeds and lemon juice • Green chilli mashed potatoes

Directions 1. Soak the gammon in plenty of cold water in the fridge for at least two hours, or overnight. Drain well. 2. Place the gammon along with all the other gammon ingredients in a casserole dish. The liquid should cover the meat; if not, add a little water to just cover. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer gently, partly covered with a lid, for 1¼ hours. Turn the gammon carefully in the liquid every 20 minutes or so. 3. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 4. Remove the gammon from its cooking stock, transfer to a roasting tin. Reserve the cooking liquid for the sauce. 5. Cut the rind from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat, and discard the rind. With a small sharp knife, score the fat into diamonds. 6. For the glaze, put a ladleful of cooking liquid into a large clean pan. Add the sugar and chilli powder and cook until a glaze-like consistency. Pour this over the gammon and roast for 15 minutes, until browned and caramelised. Set aside in a warm place while you make the sauce 84

7. For the sauce, boil the cooking liquid in a pan, uncovered, over a high heat until it has reduced to about 500ml/17fl oz; this could take about 10 minutes of boiling. 8. Strain the liquid through a sieve into a clean pan, rubbing any pieces of apple through the sieve too so that the flesh is in the sauce; leave behind only the skins. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning to taste. If you want it sweeter, add a pinch of demerara sugar; you almost certainly won’t need any salt. 9. Reheat the remaining strained sauce gently until it reaches a simmer. Blend the cornflour in a little cold water to a smooth paste, and stir into the sauce, stirring continuously. A creamy consistency is better than a very thick sauce, but if you prefer yours thicker, add a little more blended cornflour. To serve, place gammon slices on plates and pour over the sauce. Serve with spiced red cabbage and green chilli mash.

and for dessert...

Poached pears in spiced red wine

• 1 vanilla pod • 1 bottle red wine • 225g caster sugar • 1 cinnamon stick, halved • Fresh thyme sprig, plus sprigs to serve • 6 pears, peeled, but kept whole with stalk intact 1. Halve the vanilla pod lengthways, scrape out the black seeds and put in a large saucepan with the wine, sugar, cinnamon and thyme. Cut each piece of pod into three long thin strips, add to pan, then lower in the pears. 2. Poach the pears, covered, for 20-30 mins, making sure they are covered in the wine. The cooking time will very much depend on the ripeness of your pears – they should be tender all the way through when pierced with a cocktail stick. You can make these up to 2 days ahead and chill. 3. Take the pears from the pan, then boil the liquid to reduce it by half so that it’s syrupy. Serve each pear with the cooled syrup, a strip of vanilla, a piece of cinnamon and a small thyme sprig.

Peppermint hot chocolate • 200g bar plain chocolate • 600ml milk • 150ml pot single or double cream • Sugar, to taste • 6 peppermint candy canes, to serve 1. Put the chocolate and milk in a pan Gently heat, stirring until all the chocolate has melted. Continue heating until the milk is steaming, then remove from the heat and stir in the cream. 2. Divide between 6 mugs, add sugar to taste and hang a candy cane on the edge of each. Pass the mugs round and let everyone stir their hot chocolate with their candy cane – letting as much of the sweet peppermint dissolve as they fancy.

McLaren P1

The astonishing new McLaren P1, which debuted in production form at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, has a clear goal - to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track. To achieve this objective, McLaren is using all of its 50 years of racing experience and success, especially in the fields of aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fibre technology. The result is a car that has an unprecedented amount of down force for a road vehicle, similar levels to a GT3 racing car and yet with even greater ground effect. This down force not only boosts cornering and braking performance. It also helps balance, stability and driveability at all speeds. The best driver’s car in the world must also have exceptional straight-line performance and instant throttle response. To deliver this, the McLaren P1 uses an innovative IPAS petrol-electric powertrain comprising a substantially revised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, coupled to a single electric motor, collectively known as M838TQ. Combined power output is 916 PS. As important as absolute power is the electric motor’s ability to provide instant torque, making the powertrain superbly responsive. It is also amazingly efficient. Carbon dioxide emissions are less than 200g/km, and it can cover more than 10 km in electric-only mode. Top speed is electronically limited to 350 km/h (217 mph), with the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds, and 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 16.5 seconds. 90

91

The astonishing technology developed for the McLaren P1 includes active aerodynamics and adjustable suspension - both now banned in Formula 1, due to being seen to give a performance advantage. Airflow is optimised around the body through the use of an active wing and under body devices. The adjustable rear wing can extend from the bodywork by 120mm on road, up to 300mm on the racetrack, maximising the levels of down force. The wing is directly inspired by Formula 1 design, with the intersection of the double element rear wing and design of the endplates being the same as that on the 2008 championship winning MP4-23. In addition, the McLaren P1 also features adjustable ride height as part of the new hydro-pneumatic suspension. The revolutionary Race Active Chassis Control (RCC) can lower the car by 50mm in Race mode, to produce ground effect aerodynamics. It also features adaptive spring rates, roll control, pitch control and damping, all providing a huge range of adjustment, making the McLaren P1 perfect for either road or track. In Race mode, the spring rates stiffen by 300 per cent, allowing the McLaren P1 to corner at more than 2g. Formula 1-inspired technology permeates the McLaren P1. The revolutionary new carbon fibre MonoCage monocoque forms a complete structure incorporating

92

the vehicle’s roof and its distinctive snorkel air intake a styling feature inspired by the McLaren F1 road car. McLaren is an acknowledged world leader in carbon technology. The material offers lightness, strength and rigidity - improving performance, safety, and handling, agility, durability, and efficiency and ride comfort. The body panels of the McLaren P1 are also made from lightweight yet strong carbon composite, with their complex shapes tuned for optimal aerodynamics. Other areas of Formula 1 technology evident on the McLaren P1 include the revolutionary layered carbon ceramic brakes, developed for the road by McLaren’s Formula 1 partners Akebono. The highly efficient IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) is a development of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) used on Formula 1 cars, while DRS (Drag Reduction System) is also used on the McLaren P1, giving extra power and straightline speed both at the touch of a button. Brake Steer - an outlawed Formula 1 technology - is also used on the McLaren P1. It improves cornering behaviour and cornering speed. Despite the huge performance, the McLaren P1 is also a refined and comfortable high-speed supercar. It’s fast on the racetrack but still fast, comfortable and refined on the road.

The Christmas

Crunch

Christmas and the New year is the time that can make or break clubs and gives a pretty good indicator how the league will end up.

There are 4 league games and the 3rd round of the FA cup at the end of it. So within the space of 14 days the top teams have to play 5 games. This is when the bigger squads and the fitness levels come into play and some teams are found out. Let’s be frank, money is usually important as the bigger teams have more quality to call upon. With games effectively 3 days apart then injuries, yellow cards and the like all become important. Also the amount of games played so far can have an important influence on the crunch period with some teams like Arsenal playing some 6 games more than an out of Europe Liverpool. This may be crucial for confidence and there will always be a few surprises at this time... 100

So it all starts on the 21st of December and there aren’t many games bigger than Arsenal v Chelsea. With Arsenal proving to be the better team so far this season and this game being at the Emirates then Chelsea are in for a task.

in the shape of Soldado. They’re just not scoring, and to ignore Defoe and Adebayor for much of the season is puzzling.

The return of Jose Mourinho back to Chelsea was hailed as a shoo in for them to win the title but Mourinho is a changed man and while once you got the idea that the team would walk through fire for him, he’s less passionate now and the results aren’t quite the same. Chelsea have a lot to prove and so will want to win at Arsenal. A fantastic six pointer.

Sunderland v Norwich City is a bottom of the table clash that stands out. Sunderland are much improved under Gus Poyet and Norwich can play well but are still struggling. If Norwich lose this 6 pointer then they could be mired in the relegation zone.

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur will be an interesting game as well, as Southampton have been the surprise package this season and have been playing well and scoring freely. Spurs however have been ok this season but with the influx of new players its taking time to settle, plus there’s the problem of Andre Villas Boas’s insistence on playing one up front

Stoke City v Aston Villa are two potential candidates for relegation. Both teams started strongly in August but soon fizzled out and while Villa are the better side, home advantage will help Stoke.

On Boxing day, the biggest game has to be Manchester City v Liverpool. Manchester City have had an odd season so far with them being absolutely useless away from home and absolutely brilliant at home. Liverpool are up against it here and will be happy to leave with a point.

Chelsea v Swansea City is the other interesting game. Swansea haven’t quite clicked into the same gear as last season but as long as they have Wilifried Bony and Michu up front they’ll be a handful. The extra Europa League games have obviously taken their toll on the Swansea squad and they can’t compete with the like of Chelsea’s all-stars. If Swansea continue to play good football they’ll give Chelsea and the rest of the league a run for their money for the rest of the season.

West Ham United v Arsenal. There’s previous between the two sides with Sam Allardyce stepping on Wenger’s toes on more than one occasion. As this is a London derby then this will have even extra spice and West Ham will fight til the end to put one over the gooners.

Aston Villa v Crystal Palace. A 6 point relegation battle with the spoils probably going to Villa. By this time in the season it could already be too late for Palace. On the 28th of December, Liverpool and Chelsea are involved in another titanic battle when they face each other at Stamford Bridge. The pressure might be on Chelsea though as it’s at their place. If Liverpool play 4 at the back and soak the Chelsea pressure up then Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho could spring quite a few surprises.

Newcastle United v Arsenal has the appearance of a good game and could go either way. We’ve seen Newcastle’s ability to soak up pressure against the likes of Chelsea and Spurs, and if the Magpies continue this then Arsenal could have a difficult match.

Everton v Southampton should be a real indicator of two teams who while not quite top-4 material will certainly fancy their chances at a European place. Both teams have also done well under new and young managers and with Martinez replacing Moyes more staid football, and Pochettino bringing great football to Southampton, then this match could be a real humdinger and sort out the hopefuls from the also-rans.

Manchester City v Crystal Palace. If Palace play anywhere near as badly as they’ve done most of the season so far this game could be a cricket score with Manchester City being rampant at home. If Palace keep City’s score down then they’ll be happy even if they lose, as goal difference could be crucial at the end of the season.

While all the rest of us are recovering from hangovers after New Years spare a thought for those less fortunate than ourselves, the 50 k (+) a week premier league footballer. As we start to feel vaguely normal by the afternoon or have just carried on the night’s festivities with the hair of the dog, we the loyal fans can at least watch footy on the first day of the New Year. Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur face each other, with Spurs having a lot to prove. United have recovered from their shaky start and have been better lately, but they’ve still got a problem that their squad is a little weak. Their defense and midfield could be better and they’ll be looking for a few additions in the January transfer window. Spurs have yet to play that well and even when they are playing well they usually come unstuck at Old Trafford. Southampton v Chelsea will be a tough test for Chelsea as they visit the South Coast and in the game of Crystal Palace v Norwich City, Palace will be desperate for any sign of hope of Premiership survival. As for Fulham v West Ham United? Form will probably go out the window and if either team lose then the flirtation with relegation will start once more.

So with the festivities over and those intense games come and gone, is their any lessening of the pace? Nope, 4 days later comes one of the most important games of the season. The FA Cup 3rd round. No rest for the wicked I guess. 101

Southampton v A. Villa

TUESDAY 3RD DECEMBER

Southampton have excelled themselves this season and are playing good football as well. Their surprise factor might be waning slightly but they will still play with confidence after beating the likes of Liverpool. Villa have been steady this season and are slowly showing signs of stability so I expect a good game here. Southampton to win though 2-1.

Arsenal v Hull City

Palace are doomed already and while they might keep fighting they’ve still had it. I expected a lot more from West Ham this season and am quite surprised to see them so close relegation, they have the players to avoid the drop but they’ll have to start producing the goods. I think they’ll get a result here away to Palace and I see the score as 1-2 to West Ham.

Liverpool v Norwich City

Liverpool on the whole have been good at home this season and more to the point they’ve beating the smaller teams rather than getting stupid draws. Me saying that now means that I’ve probably doomed this game to a draw but I think Liverpool will win it at a canter. 3-0 to Liverpool.

Man United v Everton Leighton Baines

FIXTURES & PREDICTIONS

Crystal Palace v West Ham United

December

Premiership

Arsenal are playing well and are challenging for the title. They greet Hull here who seem pretty stable as a football club and have pulled off a few surprises this season. Hull seem to have enough class as not to get sucked into the relegation mire and so will want to give a good account of themselves. They’ll still lose here though. 2-0 to Arsenal.

Stoke City v Cardiff City

Stoke started well and by the end of August they had amassed 6 points from 9 and all looked well but since then they haven’t won and only scraped a few draws together. Hughes might lose his job yet again if things don’t improve. Cardiff are doing ok, considering the bizarre running of the club by the owner, he paid for it, he can muck it up I guess. I’m going for another draw here 1-1.

Sunderland v Chelsea Gus Poyet

Getting rid of Di Canio was a bright move by Sunderland as by all accounts the Italian had completely lost the dressing room. Chelsea old boy, Gus Poyet though has a lot to do and will do well if his team survives relegation. They have a chance though but won’t be getting any points here against Chelsea. Chelsea to win 0-2.

Swansea City v Newcastle United A tricky game for United with the arrival of Moyes old team who will want to show him a thing or two. Leighton Baines is in the shop window and United want to buy him, so I expect to see him playing a blinder. So Everton will certainly be up for it as will United who are finally coming into some semblance of form. Carrick being missing for 6 weeks though is a big blow for United and they become over run in midfield by their title rivals. Time will tell. I’ll go for a 1-1 draw here. 102

Both teams have had the surprise factor in the last few years and while Swansea aren’t quite back to their best yet, Newcastle are showing clear signs of better form when beating Chelsea and Spurs. Swansea though are tough to beat at home and both sides play some decent football so I think they may cancel each other out. 1-1.

SATURDAY 7TH DECEMBER Arsenal v Everton West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City Joe Hart

This should be a great game as both sides will want to show what they can do and Everton will want to show their new positive style and attack Arsenal. Arsenal can play on the counter though and so I think they’ll just edge this one. Arsenal know that points mean prizes and will go for the win. 1-0 to Arsenal.

Manchester United v Newcastle United

With Newcastle showing signs of good form despite spending no money at all, then this game could really be an excellent one. United will be keeping an eye on Newcastle’s Cabaye as Moyes has probably realised that Manchester United’s midfield is pretty old and vulnerable. Newcastle will try to sit back and hit out on the counter and this could prove to be difficult for Manchester. I’ll go for a shock Newcastle win here 1-0.

Southampton v Manchester City

Manuel Pellegrini

West Brom are now beginning to look like the team they were last year and after being robbed by the ref in the Chelsea game of all 3 points they’ll fancy their chances to go all the way here. Pellegrini has dropped Joe Hart after his accident prone gaffs and so have made City into a stronger unit at the back. A closer game than people think and I think it will be a draw. 1-1.

C. Palace v Cardiff City

Both teams will be involved in the relegation battle, but at least Cardiff have shown some decent football along the way. Palace have already sacked the manager, Ian Holloway who got them promoted and one gets the feeling that they were promoted too soon and much to their own surprise. Holloway bought too many players who never jelled and that proves costly in the premiership. 0-0.

Fulham v Aston Villa

WEDNESDAY 4TH DECEMBER

Two teams who can avoid relegation if their players step up to the mark. Both teams have had good results then followed by bad ones and so this game could go either way. I still think as its at Fulham then they could sneak it 1-0.

Liverpool v West Ham Sam Allardyce

Fulham v Tottenham Hotspur

Somethings gone wrong at Fulham but there are little signs of progress. Martin Jol is a decent manager but it’s never a good sign when the club appoints an assistant manager to help out (aka ready to take over when it all goes pear shaped). Jol might survive though as he’s done a decent job since he’s been there and he’s more than capable of doing so in the future. Spurs to win 0-1.

Martin Jol

The other half of Manchester also has to play a tricky game against awkward opponents and considering City have been awful away from home this season then I could quite easily see the result going Southampton’s way. 1-0 to Southampton.

Stoke City v Chelsea

Stoke ‘welcome’ Chelsea who are looking for more attacking options in January with mention of Falcao from Monaco for 60 mil. Stoke are Radamel Falcao looking more and more likely to be relegated and show no real sign of promise. Chelsea to win by 2-0.

Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur

If Spurs don’t improve with their 100 million spend in the summer, then manager Andre Villas Boas will be out of a job come May. They need to start scoring and leaving Defoe and Adebayor to twiddle their thumbs doesn’t seem wise in hindsight. Sunderland will fight and with the roar of their fans at the Stadium of light then they just might get a draw. 1-1.

Liverpool new team against Liverpool old boys Carroll, Cole, Downing’s West Ham, all three will want to prove a point that they aren’t useless players even though they certainly were for the Reds. West Ham haven’t played well this season and I can’t see them getting anything from this game either. It might be close though and i’ll go for 1-0 to Liverpool. 103

Michu

Swansea are a better side than Hull but with them playing well in Europe they are beginning to look a little jaded in the league. The league is the bread and butter and they’ll want to get as many points now that the Europa League is closing til the end of February. Hull might have problems here containing Michu and so i’ll go for a home win for Swansea 1-0.

West Bromwich Albion v Norwich City

Norwich are in trouble and everyone knows it. Quite why they are having problems after spending fairly well in the summer is odd, but if they don’t improve soon then Chris Hughton will be out of a job come the New Year. West Brom to win here 2-0.

SATURDAY 14TH DECEMBER Aston Villa v Man United Christian Benteke

Chelsea v Crystal Palace

Chelsea will certainly want an easy 3 points here and Palace will have no chance whatsoever of stopping them. Palace will do well to keep the goals down to about 3 which might be important at the end of the season and the goal difference tally. I think Chelsea will have a field day and win 5-0.

Everton v Fulham Roberto Martinez

Swansea City v Hull City

Everton are strong at home and Fulham are pretty useless away, well come to think of it Fulham have been pretty useless at home as well. Everton look to cement a place in the top 6 and with last years challengers West Brom and Swansea well off the pace and the fact that Everton are playing more dynamic football, then Everton will certainly want 3 points here. Fulham would be happy with anything but I I think the home side will win here quite comfortably. 2-0 to Everton.

Hull City v Stoke City

Hull could prove to everyone else that they mean business and are here to stay. Beating relegation rivals Stoke would be a great way to do so and from what I’ve seen this season then Hull are the better side and will win here 1-0.

Man City v Arsenal Villa will have a hard time here against United because they almost always promise much and do very little. They’re record against United is awful and it’s set to continue today. United need to watch out for Benteke though as he’ll be wanting to impress potential buyers for the January window. Villa 0Manchester United 2.

Cardiff City v West Bromwich Albion

Cardiff is an awkward ground to go to and it’s a pretty noisy place which can be a little intimidating. They’ll want their home fans to be in full voice as West Brom are dangerous at the best of times. With that in mind I think this might end up as a draw. 1-1. 104

Top game with both playing well. This game certainly wets the appetite and either team could win. City will fancy they’re chances though mainly because they are so imperious at home so Arsenal will certainly be up against it. I’ll got for a city win 2-1.

Newcastle United v Southampton

Another great game for the neutral as both sides are playing well and this could be a fascinating one as Southampton attack and Newcastle soak and counter attack. After a shaky start Newcastle are playing to their strengths and even though it’s not pretty it’s been effective. Southampton will have to be wary but if they can keep it tight then they can certainly come away with something. 1-1.

Norwich City v Swansea City

Norwich need to start to produce the goods and they have every chance against a Swansea side who are still struggling with form. Swansea have a small squad and because of the demands of the Europa League they’re looking a little jaded. Norwich will be fresh and as it’s at Carrow Rd they’ll be desperate for the points. I think they might even get there with a closely fought win 1-0.

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

Yet another good game to watch for the purists with both sides capable of playing some good attacking football. The pressure is on Spurs here as they’ve yet to really start their season and goals are hard to come by. Goals for Liverpool are no problem and if they can strengthen their midfield come January then they could seriously challenger for a top 4 place. If Spurs start nervously and their fans start to grow uneasy then Liverpool will take full advantage. 0-1 to Liverpool.

West Ham United v Sunderland

Both teams are in trouble. Sunderland know it full well but I don’t think West Ham have cottoned onto the idea that they’re in peril. Once they do then they might actually getting some results but I think Sunderland can get a draw here and i’ll go for a 1-1.

SATURDAY 21ST DECEMBER Arsenal v Chelsea

Jose Mouinho A mouthwatering game which will cement standings in the top 4 and either have Arsenal stretch their lead or Chelsea catch up from lagging a little behind. Chelsea have had problems in scoring goals against decent opposition and Arsenal seem to have sorted out their defensive problems so as this game is at the Emirates and with Arsenal playing well, then I think they can sneak it 2-1.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United

Every game is tough now for Palace and the visiting masters of the counter, aka Newcastle, make it no easier for the home side. The pressure will be on Palace to win from their crowd and this will fall into Newcastle’s hands who will sit back and then hit them on the break. This won’t be a cricket score for Newcastle but it will still be fairly comfortable 0-2.

Fulham v Man City

Normally Manchester City would be the last team you want to face when you’re in trouble but looking at City’s away record, then Fulham must fancy their chances of at least getting a point. Quite why City are so appalling away from the Etihad is open to debate, but a stable back 4 might help. If they start doing that then they can start to challenge for the title again, but if they keep giving away stupid goals then they have no chance. 1-1.

Liverpool v Cardiff City

Cardiff visit Anfield for the first time since the early 80’s and might be just a little overawed at their visit. Liverpool need to produce the goods though and if Suarez and Coutinho do their stuff then Liverpool can certainly win comfortably. 2-0 to Liverpool.

Manchester United v West Ham United

and if they were still there at the club then Southampton would be a cracking team. They still are and with their astute owners and new manager they’re challenging way above where their normal mind-set has been. They’ll give Spurs a good game and I think they’ll win 2-1.

Stoke City v Aston Villa

Both teams need the points now and this should be a game of end to end stuff. Because both sides aren’t particularly decent then it could go either way but I think Villa might sneak it thus putting more pressure on Mark Hughes. 0-1.

Sunderland v Norwich City

Sunderland will fancy their chances against Norwich and if they get their crowd behind them and play to their strengths then they can nick this game against Norwich. Both teams will battle, but home advantage should make all the difference. 1-0 to Sunderland.

Last year Swansea gave Chelsea a helluva game here at Stamford Bridge but things are different now with Swansea a lesser force than they were. Chelsea have bought some more players who haven’t exactly jelled yet but show some signs of doing so. Chelsea at Stamford Bridge will be too strong and I see them winning 3-1.

Everton v Sunderland

Sunderland fans have a long trek for this Boxing day match and it will be an even longer one back if they lose, which they will with Everton winning 2-0.

Hull City v Man United

Can Hull stop the Manchester United juggernaut? Well if they keep it tight and pray a bit then they can certainly have a go. This will be a close game and I’ll go for a draw. 1-1.

Man City v Liverpool Sergio Aguero

Swansea City v Everton

A tough game for the home side with Everton playing well and Swansea not so much. Swansea are well capable of beating most teams on their day but will they do so today? I’ll go for an Everton away win 0-1.

West Bromwich Albion v Hull City

Sam Allardyce might have a little tear in his eye as he returns to an Old Trafford that no longer contains his bezzie mate, Sir Alex Ferguson. Usually Sam Allardyce Sam’s teams turn up, get beat soundly and then he nips in to have a couple of red wines with his old mate. No need to concentrate on football Sam, your friendship with Fergie is far more important. So will the result change? It will be closer but I still see Manchester United winning 1-0.

West Brom are showing clear signs of recovery and at home they need all their points. Hull will huff and puff but will eventually lose 1-0.

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur

Not too far to travel for the Southampton fans on boxing day and so quite a few might turn up in Wales. Southampton are firing on all cylinders and Cardiff have their moments, can the hosts win here though? I have my doubts and will go for a 1-1 draw.

Spurs need to show some form and with Southampton being in very good form down on the South Coast then this is certainly a test for Spurs. In recent years Southampton has sold Walcott, Oxlade Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey

Chelsea v Swansea City

THURSDAY 26TH DECEMBER Aston Villa v C. Palace

So the madness of the Christmas Crunch begins. Villa must think they have every chance against Palace and I can’t see any other result apart from a home win. 2-0.

Cardiff v Southampton

With ease the best game of the day and if both teams can produce what they promise, this could be a barnstormer of a game. There will be goals with Aguero and Suarez up front for each team but the battle will be played out in midfield. If Liverpool play more of the 3 at the back milarky then they’ll lose badly, if however keep it tight with a back four and with Lucas, Gerrard and Henderson propping up Coutinho, then Liverpool can certainly give City a game. I’ll go for a high scoring draw 2-2.

Newcastle United v Stoke City

Newcastle are a better side and finding form. Stoke have done little since August. St James park is a tough place to come to in the best of times let alone when you’re staring oblivion in the face. 2-0 to Newcastle.

Norwich City v Fulham

2 relegation candidates who need to get as many points as possible from each other. A traditional 6 pointer and I’ll go for a Norwich win here. 1-0.

Chelsea v Liverpool

Alan Pardew

Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion

Andre Villas Boas Two teams who play decent football at times and who both need the points quite badly. Spurs probably need them more as they spent some serious money in a gamble to get a Champions league place. If they don’t end up top 4 expect an exodus of players and of their current manager Andre Villas Boas. Spurs to win here though 1-0.

West Ham Utd v Arsenal

Normally I’d go for an instant Arsenal win, especially on current form. But it’s a London Derby and ll things like form go out the window. I expect both sides to put the boot in now as Arsenal has added a bit of metal to their fancy footwork and I expect West Ham to foul aplenty to break up Arsenal’s style of play. Arsenal to win 0 -1.

SATURDAY 28TH DECEMBER Aston Villa v Swansea City

Villa welcome Swansea and as both sides are playing pretty similar this season then this could go either way. I’ll go with Villa simply because they’re the home team. Looking at the form of both sides there is little to chose between but at some time home advantage must kick in and if it doesn’t in the busy Xmas period it never will. 1-0 to Villa.

Cardiff City v Sunderland Cardiff have every chance of getting the full 3 points here as Sunderland have recovered a little at home but are still awful away. I see no change in their fortunes here either and I’ll go for 2-0 to Cardiff.

Chelsea came close to losing the record of never losing at Stamford Bridge under Mourinho and this game might test it to the maximum. There is a rivalry between the two clubs and Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers studied under the Chelsea man. Add Torres to the mix, and this game could be quite fiery. If Liverpool can soak up the pressure then hit on the counter with Suarez and Sturrdige then this could be a bit of an upset. 0-1 to Liverpool.

Everton v Southampton

Another good game here between newly progressing footballing sides, both are trying more attacking styles and that can only help the Premiership in the long run as it is sure to provide a few shocks on the way. Southampton has a fantastic youth system and if they could keep hold of their players then they could become quite a force in English football. Everton have done well not to have noticed ex manager Moyes exit and in fact if anything they’re probably playing better under Martinez. I’ll go for honours even 1-1.

Hull City v Fulham

Hull have good home form and Fulham have been useless away for a couple of seasons now. I see no real change of fortune here either and I’ll go for a Hull win 2-1.

Manchester City v Crystal Palace

I’ll be amazed if this game is nothing less than 5 – 0 to City who have been quite brilliant at home. Palace are on a hiding to nothing and each game will become more and more demoralising. Sad but they bought too many players and didn’t trust the ones who got them promoted in the first place, if they had done so and just added some extra class in the odd position then they probably would have done better and saved a whole lot of money. 5-0 to City.

Newcastle Utd v Arsenal

Newcastle have the scalps of Chelsea and Spurs so far this season, so why not take another London club? Arsenal have been this season than the others 2 so I don’t Newcastle winning here, but I don’t think a draw is out of the question. 1-1.

Norwich City v Manchester United

Norwich will probably up their game and look fairly decent at times but United will probably come along in the last ten minutes and score the winner. 0-1 to United.

Tottenham Hotspur v Stoke City

Spurs should put Stoke to the sword here, if they don’t then you might as well count them out of the race for the top 4. I’ll go for 2-0 here for Spurs.

West Ham United v West Bromwich Albion

If West ham haven’t realised they’re in trouble yet, they soon will be after meeting West Brom here. West Brom have every chance of winning here and I think they’ll do so. 0-1 to West Brom.

107

There’s recent talk about Fulham’s Berbatov going to Barcelona as striker back up. If Berbatov leaves then Fulham will be relegated. Even with him they have a hard job to survive and there aren’t many worse places to come to when you’re looking for points than the Emirates. I predict a riot 3-0 to Arsenal.

Chelsea v Manchester United

Best game of the day by a country mile. Moyes has had half a season to bed his ideas in and 2 weeks now to bring in any new players needed. Chelsea are in a similar situation and will buy bigger and have Mourinho who has been at Chelsea before and is the better manager of the two. This will probably be a dull affair where each team cancels each other out but I still see Chelsea winning 1-0.

Crystal Palace v Stoke City

Palace need to win games like this against fellow relegation candidates. 6 points can change the table quickly and teams can shoot up in next to no time. Palace have to win this and I think they just might. 1-0. 108

Last year Liverpool were doing quite well when Villa came a calling who then proceeded to soundly thrash them 3-1. This year Liverpool are a different animal with the introduction of Sturridge and Coutinho and they’ll want a bit of revenge. They’ll get it and win 2-0 to Liverpool.

Manchester City v Cardiff City

I just can’t see Manchester City coming unstuck against Cardiff here. It might be closer than people think as Cardiff can play a good game at times. 2-0 to Manchester City.

Norwich City v Hull City

All home games are must wins for Norwich now as it gets tighter at the bottom of the table. Hull aren’t good away and so I can see Norwich getting the win here. 1-0.

Sunderland v Southampton

Sunderland are better at home than they are away but that’s not saying much! Southampton are just too good for the mackems and so I see a close affair but Southampton winning. 1-2.

Swansea City v Tottenham Hotspur An important game for both clubs as a win can determine their season. If Swansea lose then they’ll get uncomfortably close to the relegation area but if they win they’ll move into mid table safety. If Spurs win then they’re in for a shout of top 6 but a loss would mean Swansea getting a little too close on their heels. 0-1 to Spurs.

West Bromwich Albion v Everton A tough game for each side and with both teams in pretty good form I predict a humdinger of a match. This could easily go either way and I think a 2-2 result might happen.

West Ham United v Newcastle United Mike Ashley

Dimitar Berbatov

Arsenal v Fulham

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Philippe Coutinho

SATURDAY 18TH JANUARY

West Ham need to start producing the goods after a very slow start has left them just above the relegation zone. Newcastle have surprised many mainly due to their complete lack of investment in players. At least they’re not in debt like a lot of the clubs now are. There might be a reason why Mike Ashley is a multi-millionaire after all. I think a draw will happen here and I’ll go for 1-1.

TUESDAY 28TH JANUARY Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion

The last of the Midlands Derbies and both have to win for local pride. Villa tend to show up in these games and so I’ll go for a Villa win 2-1.

Norwich City v Newcastle United

Newcastle never like East Anglia for some reason and so I think Norwich can get at least a draw here. 1-1.

Southampton v Arsenal

Another winnable game for Palace but I don’t think they’ll do so today. A draw will probably suit both parties. 1-1.

These two excellent footballing sides should battle all the way for the win. Southampton aren’t surprising anyone anymore and Wenger will be very wary of their skill. Arsenal will have to be at their best to come away with anything from this game and I can see it ending in a draw. 2-2.

Liverpool v Everton

Sunderland v Stoke City

If either side loses in this fixture, life can be unbearable for the local rivals on Merseyside. Stevie Gerrard tends to get sent off in the matches but if he doesn’t and remains calm then Liverpool have the better side and better players. Everton are quite capable of pulling off a win but I don’t think they will though and I’ll go for a win for Liverpool 2-0.

Manchester United v Cardiff City

Cardiff will want to show that they can compete on the biggest stages and are here to stay in the premiership. So this will be a hard fought game with United just about edging it 1-0.

Chelsea v West Ham United

Chelsea know that West Ham can beat anyone on their day, but this season that’s been few and far between. West Ham will try to keep it tight but class will out and Chelsea will win 2-0.

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City Mark Hughes

Steven Gerrard

Crystal Palace v Hull City

WEDNESDAY 29TH JANUARY

Spurs have a chance here as City are so bad away from home. An early goal will settle the nerves for Spurs and if they get that then it could be a very uncomfortable afternoon for the visitors. I’ll go for a Spurs win 1-0.

Sunderland have a chance against Stoke at home and Stoke are in serious trouble this season, new manager or not. Sunderland to scrape this but for some reason I think there might be some goals. 2-1.

Swansea City v Fulham

Swansea should see off Fulham with a certain amount of ease and will want all the points to shoot up the table before their Europe League campaign starts again. 2-0 to Swansea.

Andros Townsend Spurs have spent over 100 million quid on new players this summer with Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Ethienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches all coming in. Gareth Bale left for Real Madrid for 86 million...After the departure of Gareth Bale, Spurs bought a lot of players at top prices but one of their star performers so far, has been the player brought in to fill Bale’s very big shoes, and he cost nothing. And what a season Andros Townsend has had so far. At 22 years old, Andros is a product of the Spurs academy, he joined the youth academy at 8 years old and is a lifetime Spurs fan. He’s well travelled as before he finally got his chance with the Spurs first team he’s been on loan to 8 other clubs. In the last 3 years he’s been at Yeovil town, Milton Keynes Dons, Ipswich, Watford, Millwall, Leeds, Birmingham City and finally QPR. Finally this season he made his breakthrough and instantly made an impact, playing in the wins against Palace, Swansea and Dinamo Tbilisi where he scored and created 2 assists. His first premier league goal was against Aston Villa in late October.

‘Last season Gareth Bale was the star; this season we have a team of stars,’ Townsend said ‘We made seven top signings in the summer and we’re more wellrounded. We can play two sides – one in the league and then make eight or nine changes for a cup game.’ With Townsend’s input as well then he’s certainly optimistic, he continues ‘Is it realistic to aim for the title? I can’t see why not. We’re in touching distance of the top and we’re still fighting for that top space. Four of the top 6 changed manager in the summer but we’ve kept continuity and that gives us a massive chance this year. Last season, we looked to Gareth a lot, but this year we’ve got great depth in our squad. The squad will come into it more between January and March and hopefully that depth will give us the upper hand. We’ve just got to have the belief to stay up there. We’ve made a good start and now it’s up to us to continue that and not let the expectation get to us. Arsenal are in fantastic form but I’m sure the Manchester clubs and Chelsea will hit a purple patch, and it’s up to us to stay with them.’

In May 2013, he got into trouble for breaking the rules on betting and had to withdraw from the Under 21’s squad but by September because of his form for Spurs all was forgiven and he was finally called up to the England squad for the qualifiers. He made his senior debut in the starting eleven against Montenegro, where he scored and was named man of the match. So can Townsend replace the 26 goal man that is Gareth Bale? He certainly thinks the Spurs squad is better than last year and he points to the fact that the players aren’t able to rely on Bale and so have to become more of a team.

Player Profile Age: 22 Born: Chingford, UK Marital Status: Single Salary: 40 thousand Club: Tottenham Hotspur 110

Spurs haven’t won the title since the double of 1961 and they probably won’t this season either but for every year Andros plays he gains experience and in a couple of years, Bale might just be a memory and the only name on everybody’s lips will be...Andros Townsend.

Champions TUESDAY 10TH DECEMBER UEFA Champions League - Group A

Man Utd V Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester United are pretty much through in this group but they still have to get a result and this should be fairly easy against Shakhtar at Old Trafford. United have had a very easy group but still struggled but they should qualify despite that. 2-0 to United.

Real Sociedad V Bayer 04 Leverkusen Sami Hyypia

League fair rules, so both teams will want to prove a point. Bayern to win though 2-1.

Galatasaray V Juventus

Juventus have been awful in the Champions League but very good in the Italian league. They still have a chance of scraping through if results go their way and they’ll want to make sure they can beat Galatasaray. Easier said than done though as it’s away in Turkey but I have a feeling Juve will just edge it 0-1.

Viktoria Plzen V CSKA Moscow Both teams were given a bad hand when they were drawn in the same group as City and Bayern. At least Moscow has the chance to get a Europa League place while Pizen has nothing to play for at all. 0 -1 to CSKA.

UEFA Champions League - Group C

Benfica V Paris Saint Germain

PSG have already qualified so they don’t even have to put a full team out and so this may benefit Benfica greatly in their quest to qualify. I still see a draw though and i’ll go for 1-1.

Olympiakos V RSC Anderlecht

FC Copenhagen V Real Madrid

Copenhagen have been ok so far this campaign but I can’t see them winning in this game. Ronaldo and Bale are playing extremely well up front and this game could well be a cricket score. 0-4 to Real.

112

Chelsea have enjoyed Europe and should easily qualify. Steaua have sadly been outclassed by the rest of the teams in this group and they aren’t even that good. Chelsea to win by a country mile 3-0.

UEFA Champions League - Group D

Bayern Munich V Man City ini

FC Schalke 04 V Basel Manuel Pellegr

UEFA Champions League - Group B

UEFA Champions League - Group E

Chelsea V Steaua Bucharest

Olympiakos fate lies in their own hands and if they whipping boys Anderlecht they should be more or less sure to qualify. I’ll got 2-0 to Olympiakos.

Pep Guardiola

Sociedad have been pretty woeful this season which is sad after showing such promise to qualify for the Champions league in the first place. Leverkusen under Sami Hyypia have been excellent this season and I see them qualifying with United in this group. 1-2 to Leverkusen.

WEDNESDAY 11TH DECEMBER

Both teams have qualified for the next stages and so this should be an interesting game. Bayern have often criticised the billionaires who have bought up some of the English clubs like City and Chelsea, while Bayern itself is a model of sound economic judgment and

Both teams are pretty similar and both will be fighting for the second place behind Chelsea. Basel got a great result again Chelsea in this group and beat them at Stamford Bridge so they are capable of a shock or two. I think thought Schalke should just about scrape it 1-0.

UEFA Champions League - Group F

UEFA Champions League - Group H

Marseille V Borussia Dortmund

Barcelona V Celtic

Marseille have been awful so far and Dortmund will be only to pleased for the 3 points. As this group is tight between Arsenal, Dortmund and Napoli these extra points can make all the difference in the final standings. 0-3 to Dortmund.

Napoli V Arsenal

Barcelona with or without Messi won’t have a problem against Celtic here. At the Camp Nou they’ll score a couple after a brave defence by Celtic for the opening half hour, then all will crumble. Celtic lost their chance to qualify with their loss to Ajax and so won’t quite have their heart in it, there still might be a Europe league place though so at least that’s something. 2-0 to barca.

Rafael Benítez

Milan V Ajax Arsene Wenger

This should be a cracking game and if results go certain ways both teams could be eliminated tonight if they lose. Napoli will go for the win and Arsenal will be happy with a point. I’ll go for a 1-1 draw.

Milan are currently mid table in the Italian league and not playing well at all, luckily neither are the other teams that will qualify behind Barcelona aka Ajax and Celtic and so Milan should win this game at home and end up qualifying as they do so. 2-0 to Milan.

UEFA Champions League - Group G

Atlético Madrid V FC Porto

Atletico have strolled into the next stages with absolute ease and Porto and Zenit are battling to get second place. If both lower teams are on similar points then Porto have a tough job getting a result here at Atletico, but then the Spanish side have an important game against Valencia on the Saturday and so may just play a weakened team against the Portuguese. 1-1 draw.

FK Austria Vienna V Zenit St Petersburg

Zenit should just about win here but whether its enough to qualify instead of group rivals is anyones guess. My gut says Porto will qualify despite this 0-1 result to Zenit.
