Leonardo DiCaprio
Entertainment
Although he was born with a name already befitting a Hollywood movie star, Leonardo DiCaprio’s childhood began with more humble beginnings. Born in Los Angeles to parents Irmelin and George, he was an only child and a disruptive child. His mother was born in Germany but moved with her family to the US in the 1950’s, while his father is of both Italian and German descent. They met at college and subsequently moved to Los Angeles when they were married. While pregnant, DiCaprio’s mother was looking at a painting from Leonardo Da Vinci when she first felt her son kick, and so decided to name her unborn child after the legendary artist.
10
DiCaprio’s parents separated and subsequently divorced when he was just a year old and the young boy lived mostly with his mother in the Echo Park and Los Feliz District of Los Angeles. His mother wanted only the best for her son, worked hard taking on two jobs to provide him with a good childhood. The actor’s career began from a very young age and from the age of five he was taking small roles and parts in commercials and educational films. Although he was removed from the set of Romper Room, a children’s television series, he soon had the acting bug and at the tender age of 14 landed his big commercial for Matchbox cars. Just two years later he won his first major acting role in the short lived TV series Parenthood, based on the 1989 film, alongside other unknown actors including David Arquette, Tobey Maguire and Thora Birch. He soon landed other roles on shows that include Roxanne, Lassie and the daily soap opera, Santa Barbara.
The Early Years
for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe award – his first of many nominations to come. With his career now on the rise, Leonardo DiCaprio was the young actor that every director and producer wanted for their next big films and he took roles in The Quick and The Dead, Don’s Plum and Total Eclipse, in which he played the character originally intended for River Phoenix who died during pre-production of the film.
In 1991, at just 17, Leonardo won his first film role on Critters 3 playing, as he described it, “your average, no-depth, standard kid with blond hair” but unfortunately the movie went straight to video. However, the young actor made his big screen debut just a year later when he was picked by Robert De Niro out of 400 other young actors to play the lead role in This Boy’s Life opposite De Niro and Ellen Barken. The film opened at #10 at the Box Office and was a success with both critics and the public.
Over the next few years, DiCaprio took on acting parts that were to make him into the Hollywood superstar he is today and to catapult his stardom around the world. Baz Lurhman’s Romeo and Juliet was first with a young Clare Danes, followed by the film that is undoubtedly the biggest of his career…Titanic. Although reluctant at first to take on the role of Jack Dawson, DiCaprio was eventually persuaded by director James Cameron who believed in his acting ability. The film grossed more than $1.83 billion dollars in worldwide box office receipts and saw the actor gain his second Golden Globe nomination among other awards. The young star knew the film had made his career and has since said of the role “I’ll never reach that state of popularity again…and it’s not something I’m going to try and achieve either.”
DiCaprio’s next role was the one that really made the world take notice… The character of Arnie in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape earned Leonardo DiCaprio nominations
His next few films were also box office hits but unfortunately were panned by critics – The Man In The Iron Mask, in which he played the dual roles of King Louis XIV
It was these roles that soon got him noticed by critics and other actors and he earned a nomination for a Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor.

and his brother Philippe, and The Beach, for which critics slated his performance, calling his portrayal of traveller Richard, ‘the everyday American’.
DiCaprio knew his next role must be that of a character the public would want to get behind and Steven Speilberg provided him with just such a role in his 2002 critical success Catch Me If You Can. Starring alongside Tom Hanks, Martin Sheen, Christopher Walken and Amy Adams, DiCaprio portrayed Frank Abagnale Jr, who made millions writing bad checks before his 19th birthday, travelling the world using different personas. For the role DiCaprio received his third Golden Globe nomination.
Of late, the actor has taken roles in The Great Gatsby, which was released last year and was described as the best portrayal of Gatsby in any of the films that have been previously released; and the recently released Wolf of Wall Street in which he portrays Jordan Belfort, the stockbroker who was arrested in the late 1990’s for securities fraud and money laundering. The film has already won him a Golden Globe award for best actor and an Academy Award nomination – his fourth to date.
His notably and acting credence in the industry suitably obtained, DiCaprio’s leading roles over the next few years saw him act with some of Hollywoods’ greats and some of the best films to be released in the last 10 years. Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Departed, Revolutionary Road, and Inception are just some of the films to earn critical and financial success upon release and earned the actor nominations for Golden Globes and an Academy Award. The psychological thriller Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese, was next and was shortly followed by Christopher Nolan’s science-fiction film Inception, both of which gave DiCaprio roles that critics praised and Shutter Island became Scorsese’s highest grossing film to date. 13

2011, remaining as friends. Since Refaeli, DiCaprio has had shortterm relationships with a few other famous faces including actress Blake Lively (before she married Ryan Reynolds), model Erin Heatherton and model Toni Garrn whom he is reportedly still dating.
Aside from acting, DiCaprio has been seen in tabloids and magazines due to his high profile relationships with some of the world’s top models. From 2000 – 2005 he had a relationship with Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, and shortly after they broke up the actor was pictured with model Bar Refaeli whom he met at a Las Vegas party. The couple remained together for 6 years and parted in
The actor is also a committed environmentalist and owns an island in Belize that he is turning into an eco-friendly resort; he also drives a Toyota Prius and has solar panels on his house. However, not only does he care about the environment, DiCaprio also gives generously to charity and has donated many times in the past, including $1 million to the relief efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake; $35,000 to the Los Angeles Public Library in the Los Feliz district; $1 million to the Wildlife Conservation Society at Russia’s tiger summit; and $61,000

St Patrick’s Day Saint Patrick’s Day is both a cultural and religious holiday that is celebrated each year on the 17th March. Named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognised patron saint of Ireland, the day celebrates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland as well as the heritage and culture of the Irish. Celebrations take place across the nation and indeed in many other places around the globe and include public parades, festivals, the wearing of green attire, and in more recent years… an excuse to get together with friends and family to enjoy a Guinness or two. The celebrations began way back in the ninth or tenth centuries but was not made an official holiday until 1903. However a few years after March 17th was made a holiday, an Irish MP declared that all pubs and bars should be closed for the festival after drinking got too out of hand - this ruling was later repealed in the 1970’s. In recent years the government of the Republic of Ireland have campaigned to use the holiday to promote Ireland and its culture. The first Saint Patrick’s Day Festival was held on March 17 1996 but just a year later it was expanded to three days and then in 2000 it expanded again to five days. All over the world celebrations take place with revellers dressing in green and heading to their local Irish bar for a bit of Celtic fun and merriment.

Plastic Surgery Apps..
Really?
Very few men and women are 100 per cent happy with their bodies. Even children as young as 9-years-old are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the ever increasing bombardment of the ‘perfect’ body and what is considered beautiful. We may dream of getting a new nose or boobs, but actually undergoing plastic surgery is not something we would all opt for, whether it’s due to lack of funds or because going under the knife is scary enough when it’s for something you need rather than something you simply want. But much like everything else these days, there is actually a plastic surgery app. Hundreds of apps are now available for anyone to download — meaning they don’t even ask for your age. What hope do young body conscious girls have to not go down the plastic surgery route? By adding apps like these to the picture (they also allow users to share their before and after photos with other members) the pressures could only worsen. It could mean that young people who were simply playing around with the app might ultimately consider plastic surgery because of pressure from their peers after seeing the ‘after’ results. But what’s not portrayed is the in-between process; the bruising, the complications, the long recovery process, the pain after surgery, the expense. These apps simply show the beautiful, unblemished results, not the ugly side of plastic surgery.

Split?
Katy Perry ngaged?
E
The ROAR singer has repeatedly stepped out with a huge sparkler on her ring finger over the last few weeks and fans are now speculating that Katy Perry and boyfriend John Meyer are now engaged. Singer Meyer has supposedly been asking Katy for her hand in marriage for months but she has now finally agreed and sports the stunning white gold Art Deco ring. Perry was previously married to funny man Russell Brand but the couple split after only 14 months of marriage, and Meyer has a string of celebrity ex-girlfriends including Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift. 20
Unlucky in love Jennifer Aniston has reportedly not seen fiancé Justin Theroux in over 50 days as Justin is filming in New York and Jen residing in Los Angeles. The pair has not been seen together since their holiday to Mexico last year and they have spent two occasions, including Jen’s 45th birthday and the funeral of Justin’s close friend Philip Seymour Hoffman, apart when friends thought they would be together and supporting each other. When Hoffman died suddenly, Justin was devastated but Jen’s supposed refusal to support him in New York hurt the actor. When her birthday fell just a week later, he spent the night partying with newly single Orlando Bloom in New York in a direct message to the Friends actress that he was done with their relationship.
More heartbreak for
Khloe Kardashian Khloe Kardashian faced more heartache last month when her soon-to-be ex-husband flew to Spain to join a Spanish basketball team. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has tried for months to reconcile with her husband of four years but after many rumours of cheating and drug taking, the young reality star had just had enough. Filing for divorce last year was no easy task and the star’s family have rallied around to help as she goes through this tough time. It can’t be easy with sister Kim and Kanye West’s extravagant multimillion dollar wedding due to take place soon.

Is Shia LaBeouf having a nervous breakdown? Claims have surfaced that Shia LaBeouf is having a nervous breakdown after displaying some outrageously bizarre behaviour recently. The 27 year old actor who was accused of stealing a script in December for a short film that he was making, has appeared both on the red carpet and in an art show with a paper bag over his head with the writing ‘I Am Not Famous Anymore’. Fellow screen actor James Franco, who has a string of blockbusters under his belt, has written an open letter to the New York Times about LaBeouf and his antics trying to explain what his behaviour has been about. Franco concludes the letter stating that either he is having a breakdown or is simply portraying his ‘art’ in a very peculiar way.

Bankruptcy George! Boy for Mel’s ex
Bad taste from
‘fashion victim’
Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva has filed for bankruptcy just four years after turning down a $15 million settlement from the Braveheart actor.
The Brit Awards took place last month and with many stars shining in their usual glamour and sophistication on the red carpet, critics and fans were shocked to see Boy George as he made his arrival. Although he has never been one to stay under the radar, many were shocked to see bruise-like make up on his left eye - the star then told reporters that it was make up because he was a fashion victim. Fans were understandably outraged at the star’s bad taste, which was meant as a joke but was certainly not received that way.
The couple, who have a four year old daughter Lucia, split very publicly when Oksana claimed the actor had beaten her and tapes were leaked to the media of the couple arguing and Mel being defamatory and derogatory to the young musician. However, due to a bitter custody battle between the pair, during which Oksana sacked 40 lawyers, the musician is now out of money and can only rely on the $20,000 a month from Gibson in child support and $2000 a month from 007 actor Timothy Dalton for child support for their child Alexander. 23

The film gives a platform to exclusively female voice and seeks to expose the paralysing political correctness that prevents many from identifying, understanding and addressing this international human rights disaster. Ice Blonde
34
On another note, having such a high-intensity light colour can put pressure on the way you style your hair. Unlike natural-looking shades, icy white blonde needs to be kept above shoulder length, and styled to look good otherwise it can end up looking trashy!
Pixie Lott
Cameron Diaz
But it’s not all bad news. Hair colours have become very advanced and you can get a lot more lift with a lot less damage these days. However, be warned – if you are going to dye your hair this colour and you do have naturally dark hair, it will take a lot of maintenance and money to keep this shade looking fresh.
Gwen Stefani
This shade looks amazing when done properly, not a badly DIY bleach job, so do be warned. Not only does this shade look ultra exotic, but it also has a hint of futurism, thanks to its almost silver sheen. The problem with this hair colour? Well, unless you have a cool skin tone, chances are you won’t be able to pull off this shade. Also, if you are naturally very dark, achieving this colour may cause a lot of damage and stress to your hair.
Pink
These coming months are going to be all about the blonde hair. And we’re not talking about sun-kissed dark honey blonde, we’re talking icy white Scandinavian blonde as the “must have” hair colour for 2014.

Latest Breakthroughs With the popularity of beauty treatments on the rise we are paying more attention to the way we look and are willing to spend much more to look that bit better. Latest beauty breakthroughs that promise to do wonders really do step up to the mark and here are some that are set to be the growing trend this year.
Freeze away fat
Rise of the ‘super facial’
Fat freezing, called cryolipolysis, uses cold instead of heat to break down fat cells. It has been around for a few years but the latest treatment uses exciting new technology to make it more effective and pain-free. ProShock Ice combines two technologies to eliminate fat and tighten skin.
Forget pampering, the latest high-tech facials use every non-surgical face-lifting technology available to address wrinkles, age spots and sagginess.
First, a small plate-like device is placed directly on to the skin over the areas to be treated and then rapidly cooled. This process destroys the fat cells which are then eliminated from the body naturally over the following weeks. The second stage of the treatment uses highpressure acoustic waves to smooth and tighten the skin. For best results a course of four to six treatments is recommended. Expect to pay around £1,000 for the course. 36
TV’s Anthea Turner credits a six-week programme of these new super-lifting and refining treatments by top facialist Jill Zander with restoring her skin to peak condition. Anthea combined the Hydra Facial, an A-list favourite which refines and brightens the complexion, Exilis Face and Neck Treatment to tighten the skin and Dermalux LED, a light therapy which boosts skin renewal. Treatments cost from £150.

Shock yourself slim Another new body sculpting and cellulite reduction treatment called Lipotripsy uses radial wave therapy, also known as shock wave therapy. Delivered through a hand-held device, it can be used on the thighs, hips and bottom. As the radial waves pass through the skin they increase blood flow which reduces the appearance of cellulite and increases skin elasticity. Unlike other fat-busting treatments Lipotripsy doesn’t destroy fat cells but makes the cells permeable so the fat drains into the lymphatic system and is naturally eliminated by the body.

HealthyHair Foods
for
When it comes to healthy hair, it’s not just what you put or don’t put on your hair that counts, it’s what you put in your body, too. You can get your hair looking better by incorporating certain foods into your diet. It can take longer to notice changes in your hair than in your skin. For example, just one week with a poor diet can yield acne flare-ups or dry, sallow skin within days, but with hair, it can take a few months for a nutritional deficiency or the effects of a crash diet to show up. The nutrients you eat today help fortify the hair follicle, from which each strand is born and the scalp that surrounds it. Of course, there’s more to your hair than what you eat. Smoking, hormonal imbalances, and not enough sleep can also affect how your hair looks and feels. No magic nutrient can make up for those concerns. Still, you have a lot more leverage than you might think. If you eat a balanced, varied, protein-rich diet that focuses on the following 10 foods, you’ll be giving your hair the TLC it needs and deserves.
1
SALMON
Besides being rich in protein and vitamin D (both are key to strong hair) the omega-3 fatty acids found in this tasty cold-water fish are the true superstar. Your body can’t make those fatty acids, which your body needs to grow hair. About 3% of the hair shaft is made up of these fatty acids. Omega-3s are also found in cell membranes in the skin of your scalp, and in the natural oils that keep your scalp and hair hydrated. • Other options: If salmon doesn’t thrill you, you can also get essential fatty acids from fish like herring, sardines, trout, and mackerel, as well as avocado, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. 38
2
WALNUTS
5
EGGS
These are the only type of nut that have a significant amount of omega-3 fatty acids. They’re also rich in biotin and vitamin E, which helps protect your cells from DNA damage. Since your hair rarely gets much shielding from the sun, this is especially great. Too little biotin can lead to hair loss. Walnuts also have copper, a mineral that helps keep your natural hair colour rich and lustrous.
A great source of protein, eggs are loaded with four key minerals: zinc, selenium, sulphur, and iron. Iron is especially important, because it helps cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles, and too little iron (anaemia) is a major cause of hair loss, particularly in women.
• Other options: Try using walnut oil in your salad dressing or stir-fry instead of canola or safflower.
The iron, beta carotene, folate, and vitamin C in spinach help keep hair follicles healthy and scalp oils circulating.
3
OYSTERS
Oysters are rich in zinc, a lack of which can lead to hair loss (even in your eyelashes), as well as a dry, flaky scalp. Three ounces has a whopping 493% of your daily value. You can get some zinc through fortified cereals and whole grain breads, but oysters can boast a good level of protein too. Hair is about 97% protein, and without enough protein, your body can’t replace the hairs that you naturally shed every day and what you do make can be dry, brittle, or weak. • Other options: Get your fill of zinc with nuts, beef, and eggs.
4
SWEET POTATOES
Sweet potatoes are a great source of the antioxidant beta carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A. Basically, every cell of the body cannot function without enough A. It also helps protect and produce the oils that sustain your scalp, and being low on vitamin A can even leave you with itchy, irksome dandruff. • Other options: Carrots, cantaloupe, mangoes, pumpkin, and apricots are all good sources of beta carotene.
• Other options: You can also boost your iron stores with animal sources, including chicken, fish, pork, and beef.
6
8
GREEK YOGHURT
Cruise the dairy aisle for low-fat options such as Greek yoghurt, which is high in hair-friendly protein, vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid – an ingredient you’ll often see on hair care product labels), and vitamin D. Emerging research links vitamin D and hair follicle health, but exactly how that works isn’t clear. • Other options: Cottage cheese, low-fat cheese, and skimmed milk also fit the bill.
SPINACH
• Other options: Try similarly nutrient-rich dark, leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and Swiss chard.
9
BLUEBERRIES
Exotic superfruits may come and go but when it comes to vitamin C, It’s hard to top this nutrient superhero! Vitamin C is critical for circulation to the scalp and supports the tiny blood vessels that feed the follicles. Too little vitamin C in your diet can lead to hair breakage.
7
LENTILS
Tiny but mighty, these legumes are teeming with protein, iron, zinc, and biotin, making it a great staple for vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters. • Other options: Toss other beans such as soybeans (the young ones are called edamame) and kidney beans into your soup or salad.
• Other options: Kiwis, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and strawberries.
10
POULTRY
This everyday food is extraordinary when it comes to protein, as well as hair-healthy zinc, iron, and B vitamins to keep strands strong and plentiful. Because hair is nearly all protein, foods rich in protein are literally giving you the building blocks for hair. • Other options: Lean cuts of beef are another good source of lean protein. 39
Relieve Stress in under 5 minutes Kids’ driving you crazy; credit card bills mounting up; the boss giving you hassle??? The stress might be building up but take a deep breath, you aren’t alone and you will cope. And, to help you cope we have rounded up some of the best ways to relieve that stress. • Slurp some honey:
• Sip green tea:
Replace stress with sweetness and try a spoonful of honey. Besides being a natural skin moisturiser and antibiotic, honey also provides compounds that reduce inflammation in the brain, meaning it fights depression and anxiety.
Instead of turning purple with rage, get green with a cup of herbal tea. Green tea is a source of L-Theanine, a chemical that helps relieve anger. Boil the water, pour it out, and take a soothing sip.
• Give yourself a hand massage: When there’s no professional masseuse in sight, try DIYing a hand massage for instant relaxation that calms a pounding heart. Massages can be especially helpful for people who spend a lot of time typing on a keyboard. Hands in general can carry a lot of tension. Apply some luxurious lotion and start kneading the base of the muscle under the thumb to relieve stress in the shoulders, neck, and scalp.
• Bite into a mango: Use a five-minute break to peel, slice, and bite into a juicy mango, which packs a compound called linalool that helps lower stress levels.
• Brush your hair: • Nibble chocolate: Just a square (about 1.4 ounces) of the sweet stuff can calm your nerves. Dark chocolate regulates levels of the stress hormone cortisol and stabilises metabolism. 40
Really, it looks like a rat’s nest. Even if you’ve already done your 100 strokes for the day, repetitive motions such as running a brush through your hair, washing dishes, or knitting can cause the body to relax.
• Be alone: Not everyone needs a cabin the woods, but five minutes of alone time can help you collect your thoughts and clear your head.

Lose up to 10 pounds in 3 Days on
The Military Diet
This diet works on chemical breakdown and is proven. The basic premise of this diet is that you can increase metabolism and burn more fat by pairing certain foods or conversely by avoiding certain food combinations.
The various incarnations of the three-day chemical diet share certain features. They all are based on creating specific chemical pairings in foods, so substitutions are not allowed. If you can’t stand a food that is recommended in the diet, you will do best to find other weight-loss strategies and diets. These diets are highly restricted in the calories you are allowed to consume. Three-day chemical breakdown diets also limit the types of food eaten, so the diets may not be nutritionally balanced. For these reasons, the diets are limited to three days in duration. Advocates offer that you can use the diet once a week or so, alternating between your normal diet and the chemical breakdown diet. In three days you should lose up to 10 pounds. You can lose up to 40 pounds in a month if this diet is followed precisely. This is a safe diet and can be used by many different individuals and body types. Exercise is recommended. Remember: Do not eat/snack between any of the meals! Note: Coffee or tea for the first two meals of Day 1 only. Water only from then on. Water intake is always unlimited anytime. (Within reason, of course, don’t make yourself throw up). Salt and pepper may be used, but do not use any other seasoning. The diet is to be used for three days at a time only.

A slice of wholegrain bread is a good source of carbohydrates. Top it off with jam or honey for more fuel or sliced up hard-boiled eggs for high-quality protein. If you’re hitting the gym during your lunch break, grab some bread about 45 minutes before you head out. Top it with a couple slices of turkey. At this time of day, you should eat about 30 grams of carbohydrates and 15 to 20 grams of protein.
u Fruit smoothies Fruit smoothies are high in carbohydrates and highquality protein. Better yet they are easy to consume and are rapidly digested. Try blending 1/2 cup plain, low-fat yogurt, 1/2 cup fruit and 1 cup fruit juice. People tend to skip fruit and other foods that are high in carbs, but protein doesn’t break down fast enough to become fuel for a workout. The carbs from fruit break down quickly and the protein is used later to prevent muscle damage.

YOUR It is true that after a few days or weeks at the gym or doing exercise... we feel sexier, more confident, and our sex drive increases. Several studies have in fact shown that exercise causes a psychological as well as physiological improvement to our sex life. Facts for men Several studies have shown that exercise has a positive effect on the sex drive of men. Separate studies has have shown, for example, that men who participate in exercise one hour per day, three to five days a week achieved a significantly greater sex life. The frequency of sex, sexual function, and the percentage of satisfying orgasms all increased. Overall, the participants were happier with their sex lives. In general the studies have shown that the more regular the exercise regime, the higher the sex drive.
Facts for women Exercise has a positive effect on the sex drive of women as well. Studies have shown that women who frequently exercise become aroused more quickly and are able to reach an orgasm faster and more intensely. The studies have shown that the effect is both physiological as well as psychological. Moreover, there is an effect even after a single intense short-duration (20 minute) exercise.

So how does exercise boost our sex life? Sex itself is an intense physical activity requiring strength and endurance. As you exercise, both your strength and endurance will increase, opening the possibility for more varied sexual positions that require greater physical control. Physiologically your sexual performance improves because of the following: Increased sexual endurance, better muscle strength, greater flexibility, increased blood flow to the genital area. nhanced self-image leads to greater sex drive as a big part of sex is feeling sexy. Research shows that people E who exercise have an improved body image over people who do not exercise. Being more comfortable with your body leads to better and more relaxed sex. Increase in Testosterone, Endorphins and Adrenaline. The increased sex drive with exercise has been linked to higher testosterone levels in both men and women. Elevated levels of testosterone have been found in men after six weeks and in women after eight weeks of weight training. With higher testosterone levels, males experience: More frequent erections, increasing sexual urges, better bone density, greater mass and muscular strength. Women experience the following with higher testosterone levels: More frequent sex, heightened sexual arousal, elevated moods which may lead to higher sex drive, greater muscle and bone density, higher energy levels, testosterone also reduces depression and chronic fatigue, which obstructs a good sex life. Caution: Too much Exercise Can Have the Opposite Effect! Excessive exercise can have the opposite effect on your sex drive. Cardio workouts, strength training workouts, or endurance training that is too intense can actually deplete the body of sex hormones if done excessively. Excessive workout would include any workout that causes the heart to beat more than 90 beats per minute for longer than 2 minutes.
So exercise can work wonders on thee body and mind so what a better reason than ever to get up and get yourself in a gym!

The Worst
Exercise Mistakes Are you training correctly? Most of us rarely change our workout routines. We tend to stick to the same workouts every time we step in the gym because we feel comfortable doing them and our body gets into a habit of adapting to a routine quite quickly, because let’s face it, it becomes easier. You are not going to get you that lean, strong and ripped body you are after by making these common mistakes!
Mistake 1
Mistake 2 Mistake 3
Doing Isolated Exercises
Working Out With Doing Long Bouts Machines of Cardio
Doing isolated exercises like bicep curls and tricep kick-backs will NOT get you any significant results. These one-muscle-at-a-time moves simply don’t stimulate enough muscle fibres to build lean muscle or expend enough energy to maximize your calorie burn.
Fancy machines may make the gym look high-end, but truthfully, about the only thing they’re good for is for sitting down while you tie your shoes or catch your breath! The problem is this: Machines alter the way your body naturally moves and restrict your range of motion. This severely limits your ability to fully activate all of your muscles fibres – that means less fat burning and less muscle definition. Worse yet, machines can cause excessive strain on your joints, leading to nagging injuries down the road.
If you want to build lean muscle while burning fat so you can get serious definition, you need to perform exercises that stimulate as many muscles and expend as much energy as possible at the same time. This will dramatically accelerate your results.
50
If you want fast results, it’s critical that you incorporate exercises that allow your body to move naturally with full range of motion so you can skyrocket your metabolism and tone your entire physique.
Look, you need to do cardio if you want to lose weight and burn fat...BUT there’s a right way and a wrong way to do your cardio workouts. If you’ve been pounding the pavement or the treadmill with nothing to show for it. You already know it takes a lot of effort to get minimal results. There are more effective ways to pump up your cardio routine that will get you crazy results in half the time of your regular cardio workout – without causing unnecessary stress on your joints.
Mistake 4 Mistake 5 Mistake 6 Doing Crunches & Sit-Ups To Get 6-Pack Abs
Repeating The Same Workouts Over & Over
If you want washboard abs, doing traditional ab exercises like crunches and sit-ups WILL NOT get you a six pack. In fact, doing any exercises that target your abs won’t get you a six pack either! These socalled “ab” exercises are a complete waste of time. They don’t make your abs get any more defined and they definitely don’t burn any fat.
Repeating the same workouts over and over is a surefire way to STOP getting results. We’re creatures of habit and we tend to stick to things we’re familiar with and good at. But when it comes to your workouts, if you want to keep making progress and keep seeing changes in your body, you’ve got to start switching things up.
The key to getting sculpted abs is to burn off that stubborn layer of belly fat that’s hiding them while stimulating all 6 of your abdominal muscles at the same time.
You see, your body has an amazingly ability to adapt quickly and when it does, that’s when you hit the dreaded plateau and you stop making progress. You need to change up your workout routine so you can keep your body guessing to accelerate the results process.
Doing Long Workouts Longer workouts do NOT equal better or faster results. If you’ve been slaving away at the gym and your body isn’t visibly changing, you can’t do more of the same thing and expect a different result. When it comes to getting lean and fit, your body responds to quality over quantity. Invest in a personal trainer next time you visit the gym. They will give you a personalised workout routine that will accelerate results. You will be kicking yourself why you didn’t do this ages ago!
Costa Cancer Help Group Grows Cancer Sucks Spain is a facebook group that started about five months ago, we have over 150 members who feel the benefit from having a group where they are able to chat, vent , scream or offer advise. Our group is open to anyone who has been affected by cancer. Many of our members have become close and offer each other support in many ways, as the group began to grow we thought it would be nice to have a coffee morning to meet up and chat which we did a few times, that then grew into the AECC in Carvajal inviting us to hold our meetings at their venue. This was wonderful news for us as the AECC is a Spanish support organization, our group is now able to benefit from many of their services such as yoga classes, meditation, massage etc.. Update Kitchen
You have two choices when it comes to remodelling and updating your kitchen… you can choose the traditional, rustic style or you can opt for a sleek, modern look complete with all the latest gadgets and gizmos (most of which will stay in the cupboards I’m sure). As kitchens are often the heart and hub of the home, they provide an area of relaxation and solace – a place where families can reconvene after their day, and for entertaining when guests are there. Whether you choose a modern or a traditional style, the overall effect must be one that you are happy with.
Your
Homestyle
Rustic The
Style
What could be more charming than a traditional rustic kitchen? And despite what you may think, this doesn’t mean the whole kitchen needs to be fitted out in wood (of course it can if you want it to), but with just a few touches here and there you can have the style and homely feel that you have always wanted. Take inspiration from everything that is around you and your home, use colours that you feel comfortable with
52
and ultimately make the room reflect your personality. There are no rules when it comes to choosing your own style. If you like the wooden elements and exposed brick then perhaps make a middle island as a solid block of wood. This way it is sturdy yet eye catching and can be adapted to provide an eye-catching centrepiece to your kitchen.
The
Modern Look
Sleek, elegant kitchens are extremely appealing; they offer clean lines, and the modern style kitchen is becoming ever popular. Whether you choose bold, vibrant colours, or all white or black, the modern look is easy to create. If this is the kitchen you favour then to start, think about the colour that most suits you and your family, after all you don’t want to choose red for example then once the kitchen is complete, realise red is really not your colour! Think about how the colour will mesh with others in your home and start from there; then once you have the colour in mind you can start to assemble the other aspects. Even the simplest of touches can make a kitchen look modern - gone are the big handles on draws and cupboards and are replaced with decorative pulls that are either cut into the drawer or are small finger pulls in an interesting shape.
Of course once the kitchen starts to take shape, then you can accessorize it with all the latest gadgets and appliances that will turn you into the next Nigella Lawson or Jamie Oliver! Whatever you ultimately choose the end result is the same – if the room and its style fits in with the rest of your home, and your own style then really you can’t go wrong. Be brave but know your limits and once you choose a style and colour, stick with it…after all you can always re-paint!

Food & Drink
Goodfella’s Modern British Cuisine with European Flair
56
Goodfella’s restaurant and bar in Torrenueva, La Cala, is a recently opened, modern restaurant that serves British cuisine with a French twist. Family run and owned, the restaurant is already seeing great success, despite having just opened, due to their friendly, warm approach, the tasty cuisine and the live music they have every night.
The restaurant is styled with a Moroccan feel, with an emphasis on the lighting, which provides a great contrast to the style of the food and with a complete revamp before opening; the restaurant is bright and finished to the highest quality. There is a modern, comfortable bar area where you can enjoy a pre or post dinner drink and the restaurant is large so you can choose to sit as close to the musicians and the late night dance floor as you want.
as a starter or a main course while the other main courses include fish and meat dishes. These consist of slow-cooked baby leg of lamb in a rosemary jus and countryside potatoes; grilled salmon Italian style, artichoke, sun-dried tomato, fresh pasta and lemon butter; and gastro pub-style pie with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. There are also dishes with a touch of chef Tony’s French flair such as the pan-fried beef fillet, fondant potatoes, served with a choice of a wild mushroom sauce or coffee sauce and goat cheese ice cream and they have a range of mouthwatering desserts.
The owners have spent a lot of time ensuring just the right amount of lighting is distributed throughout the restaurant and the latest technology means that the lights can be changed to any colour, depending on the mood of the evening. With a lively atmosphere, the buzzing restaurant certainly looks after its clientele. They have a variety of live musicians that perform every night including Peter Brooks, Paul Hart, Stevie Nelson, Lucy Faye, Frankie Valentine and Andy Carriage. The menu, which was specially prepared by French head chef, Tony and owner John, is varied and delectable, offering a range of both light and heartier dishes that are all locally sourced and will tempt any taste bud. Starters range from rustic chicken liver
Goodfella’s has a very reasonable Sunday Lunch menu too that boasts their wonderful starters, and a traditional roast lunch including rib of beef and toad in the hole.
pate and tomato chutney; deep fried brie scented with black truffle and fruits of the forest coulis; and gratinated goat’s cheese salad with beetroot emulsion and a honey dressing. The variety of salads such as the classic Caesar or the traditional Nicoise can be enjoyed
The restaurant also has an extensive wine and champagne list that includes some Spanish favourites and even the world’s most expensive champagne, Armand de Brignac; and a selection of cocktails that are the perfect way to start the evening. Goodfella’s will also be opening a new terrace in the spring so you will be able to dine on sumptuous food under the stars.

Motors
Porsche At the 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Porsche presented the latest generation of the extravagant 911 model. This model is the first to combine the classic Targa concept with state-of-the-art roof technology. Just like the legendary original Targa model, the new model features the characteristic wide bar in place of the B-pillars, a movable roof section above the front seats and a wraparound rear window with no C-pillar. But unlike the classic models, the roof segment on the new Targa can be

A high-quality, innovative remake of the classic vehicle from 1965
opened and closed at the push of a button. When the button is actuated, the fully automatic roof system stows the convertible top behind the rear seat system, providing a real spectacle. The rear-weighted design of the PTM all-wheel drive is a typical Porsche feature, and guarantees that this latest 911 model also offers optimum driving dynamics on all road surfaces and in all weather conditions. With these features, the new Porsche 911 Targa is presenting itself as a high-quality, innovative remake of the classic vehicle from 1965. The model shares a great deal in common with the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet models; up to the window line, the technology and body of the vehicles is more or less the same. The combination of the wide rear end that is typical of all-wheel drive models, the Targa bar and the dome-shaped rear window gives the latest 911 an extremely sporty appearance and a low-slung profile.

Sport – Football
Football is big business these days, and top performances can mean the difference between attracting the best players in the world and the top sponsorship deals. Some of the teams below like Manchester City, Chelsea and Paris St Germain are owned by billionaires who don’t have to worry about the cost of players as they can afford them no matter what the cost. Some teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid gain heavy subsidies from government and television rights to make sure that they are always going to be the top two in Spain, one report lately said that while Barca and Real get 140 million per year from TV, the next in 3rd is Valencia who gets 60 million. This discrepancy of 80 million or so maintains the two-team dominance and makes it all the more wonderful when teams like Atletico Madrid spring up from nowhere. And then there’s the likes of the German clubs like Bayern Munich that are owned by the fans and play on a level financial field which slowly but surely UEFA are trying to introduce with its new regulations. How this effects the billionaire clubs is up to UEFA but it should be interesting to see if they do have the power.
Financial services company Deloitte, have published their richest european team league table and there are some movers and shakers to be seen. 72
aTleTico maDriD is in at 20 by winning the Copa del Rey, and due to its UEFA Super Cup campaign. They earned £102.8 million. At 19, roma brought £106.6 million, which is pretty good considering they haven won anything for 5 years and their stadium is only half full. FenerBahce is at 18 with 108.3 million. Fener won the Turkish cup and got to the Europa League semis. 44 % of all the money comes from advertising.
In at 17, hamBurGer sv, do pretty well as they aren’t in any European tournaments, by earning £116 million. At 16, GalaTasary join Fenerbahce in the league. Gala earned £134.6 million last season and this is mainly due to the Champions League. inTer milan drop to 15th, earning 144.6 million, with most of the money coming from sponsorship and only 12% coming from seats sold (mainly down to ground share).
Tottenham Hotspur is at 14th, earning £147.4 million by ending up 5th and having a pretty decent Europa League campaign. Gareth Bale’s sale is not included, but that was cancelled out pretty much anyway by Spurs bringing in 8 players or so. Schalke, at 13th, created £169.9 million due to a good run in the Champions League and £77 million in commercial deals. Liverpool slip to 12th due to no Champions League. They still earn £206.2 million and have just signed a £300 million kit deal with Warrior. At 11, Borussia Dortmund is the second richest German club, earning £219.6 million. Dortmund got to the final of the Champions league which brought in a cool £73 million. At 10th, AC Milan earn £225.8 million, and for now are above Inter, but this season they’re solidly mid-table and so expect them to fall for the next. Juventus are at 9 and are about to win their third league title in a row. £233.5 million was brought in with 61% from TV rights. Arsenal are at 8 and are dropping, they still brought in £243.6 million, 38% coming from matchday tickets as they are the most expensive team in England.
Finally we come to the 3 special groups I mentioned at the start, and it’s interesting to note that the fan-based clubs outdo the billionaire ones. That’s if you believe the billionaire clubs’ figures of course! Chelsea come in 7th, and they made £260 million through commercial deals and broadcasting rights.
At 6th comes Manchester City, making £271 million. Commercially City made much more money than both Arsenal and Chelsea, but as some of the chief sponsors are from the Emirates, then these deals are open to discussion. Paris SaintGermain is at 5, and as this new money has just come in which helped them win the league for the first time in 19 years, with winning that and sponsorship as well, PSG brought in £348.1 million. The €200 million sponsorship deal with the Qatar Tourism Authority no doubt helped though. Manchester United drops to 4th, and brought in £363.2 million. This is the first time Man Utd have dropped out of the top 3 since 1997. Judging by their woeful performance this season, expect United to drop some more in the coming years.
3
At 3, is the fanowned, Bayern Munich, who are European and World Champions. This despite them receiving a small percentage of TV rights in comparison to the Premier League. Their ticket prices are considerably cheaper as well but they still managed to earn £363.2 million in their treble-winning campaign. They muse be doing something right and this is their highest placing in 11 years.
2
At 2 is Barcelona, who negotiate their own TV rights and so between them and Real Madrid they get 50% of all Spanish TV money. Barca made £413 million last season and then made another 96 million Euro deal with Qatar Airways.
1
And finally, at the top of the pile is Real Madrid and for the 9th consecutive year Real are top of the world in the rich-list. They earned £444.7 million, without even winning anything. 41% of the money came from advertising as well as around 30% coming from Spanish TV rights.
‘With that kind of money coming in who needs football?’ I ask. And of course therein lies the moral of the tale, all these clubs can become economic giants and they can get sponsorship deals like Manchester United’s ‘favourite diesel supplier’ but at the end of the day, once any of these teams start to lose, the money soon drops off and the fans can lose their interest. In these days of wanting success fans can quickly switch allegiances and once that starts to happen, famous teams can drop without a trace. Just like Leeds did, or Nottingham Forest. And of course without a sound financial footing like the Bayern Munich fan-based footing, then billionaires can also lose their fortunes and leave their plaything football teams to their own devices (like Anzhi) and if there is huge debt on the club, then that becomes serious when they just can’t pay it back. That’s why in our heart of hearts we love our football, and even though money dominates in the modern game, at the end of the day it’s eleven men against eleven and anything can happen. 73

SOUTHHAMPTON v LIVERPOOL This game will be a tough one for Liverpool as while Southampton haven’t been as good as they were at the start of the season, they still remain s ger Brendan Rod a dangerous and tricky side to play and can still give the top teams a scare or two especially at home. If the pitch is a good one, and if Steven Gerrard has settled comfortable into the defensive midfield role that he’s had to play with Lucas missing, then this may help Liverpool play their game and I have a feeling that they’ll win this. 0-1 to Liverpool.
Saturday 8th March
CHELSEA v TOTTENHAM I think Chelsea will be too strong here, and have a better side than Spurs, added to that Chelsea are at home, I think they’ll win through here with not much of a problem. 3-1 to Chelsea.
Sunday 9th March
NEWCASTLE v EVERTON Newcastle without Cabaye will be struggling now and Everton have a better side anyway. With this game at Newcastle the sides will be pretty equal and I have a feeling that both sides will settle for a draw. 0-0.

FIXTURES & PREDICTIONS
Sunday 16th March
MANCHESTER UTD v LIVERPOOL No matter how bad Manchester United have been so far this season, form will go out the window in this game as there is just to much at stake. Liverpool will fancy it and they could put a nail in the coffin of a team who were champions last season. But then Liverpool haven’t been all that good away so far, there’s every chance that Liverpool will play on the counter and with the danger of the 3 S’s of Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling then they can do some damage. 1-2 to Liverpool.
TOTTENHAM v ARSENAL The North London Derby with both teams playing for something this season which means this game should be a cracker! Both teams will want Tim Sherwood to put one over the other side and if they can stop the chances of their enemy from winning the title or getting top 4, then all the better. So form has no say in this game and it’s all about strength of character, and for this reason I see Arsenal just edging it. 1-2 to Arsenal.
Saturday 22nd March
CHELSEA v ARSENAL Tactically I think Chelsea are just too strong for Arsenal. After seeing the demolishing of Manchester City by Chelsea at the Etihad, I can only see one result here at Stamford Bridge. If Aaron Ramsey comes back from injury and Ozil starts to play again, then Arsenal have a chance, but I still think Chelsea have too much nous and strength to let this game slip by. Chelsea 2 Arsenal 0.
Sunday 23rd March
TOTTENHAM v SOUTHHAMPTON This is a tricky game for Spurs who will want to maintain pressure on their race for the top four. Southampton can be a handful and with Spurs yet to fire on all cylinders they’ll have to be at their best to get 3 points. They should just about sneak this but it might be late in the game when they do so. 1-0 to Tottenham.

SOUTHHAMPTON v NEWCASTLE
Alan Pardew
Both teams started the season fantastically well, and though now safe in mid table, they have both fallen on harder times.
Southampton at least kept hold of their best players in the January window which is more than what Newcastle did when they sold their best player Cabaye to Paris St Germain. Doing so Newcastle lost their midfield fulcrum and they haven’t been the same since, and with Southampton being strong at home, then I can only see one result here. 2-0 to Southampton.

ARSENAL v MANCHESTER CITY Two footballing sides that are vying for the title meet here at the Emirates. City have picked up their form away from home but are still slightly vulnerable and Arsenal are fantastic at home. This could go either way and in the end they might just cancel each other out. 2-2.
Sunday 30th March
LIVERPOOL v TOTTENHAM Top game which could once and for all settle the race for the Champions league places. Liverpool are very strong at home and if they play to their strengths then Liverpool can come out winners here. Sherwood has taken over at Spurs and are getting vital wins when they haven’t been playing that well. Liverpool should just about edge this though 2-1.

CAPITAL ONE LEAGUE CUP FINAL
BARCELONA v MAN CITY
Sunday 2nd March
SUNDERLAND v MAN CITY
ini
Manuel Pellegr
Wednesday 12th March
Gus Poyet
This could be a much closer game than many people think. Sunderland have done a fantastic job by getting to the final in the first place, though getting past Manchester United wasn’t quite as difficult as in previous years. Sunderland’s Adam Johnson in an old City player and so will want to prove a point, and as he’s in red hot form then he’ll be one to watch. Manchester City though are also playing well and are a far better team than the one who faced Oldham and lost in last years FA Cup to Oldham. Manchester City will certainly fancy putting a few past Sunderland. If City can contain Johnson then they can win through in this game. 0-2 to Manchester City.
A superb game and it will be especially so if City have got anything from the first game at the Emirates, if they have and only need to score then City could certainly go through on the away goal rule. Barca fans think this is a foregone conclusion but if they don’t play to their top form then they will be found wanting. Pellegrini is a master in Europe and very very capable of winning the entire competition. I’m going to stick my neck out here and go for a City win. 1-2.
Tuesday 18th March
CHELSEA v GALATASARAY I can’t see Galatasary being much of a problem here for Chelsea especially at Stamford Bridge and I can see Chelsea winning here quite comfortably, 3-0.
REAL MADRID v SCHALKE Carlo Ancelotti
Jens Keller
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Tuesday 11th March
ATLETICO MADRID v AC MILAN With Milan in serious trouble and mid table in the Italian league, and Atletico Madrid flying high at the top of the Spanish league, I can only see one winner here. But it’s worth remembering Milan’s pedigree in this competition which does count for something. Will it be enough to win through against a red hot Atletico Madrid side? Nope and I’ll go for 2-0 here and A Madrid qualifying for the next round.
BAYERN MUNICH v ARSENAL Probably the hardest draw that Arsenal could have gotten, and with Bayern strolling away with the German League, they’ll end up eventual winners in these 2 legs as well. If Walcott was not injured and Ozil was playing well, then Arsenal might have had a chance but I truly can’t see anything else besides a Bayern win. 2-0. 76
Real Madrid shouldn’t have too much problem here although this game will be closer than many predicted. Schalke have been ok in the German league and Real haven’t exactly set the stadium on fire, but they should just edge this one. 1-0 to Real.
Wednesday 19th March
MAN UTD v OLYMPIAKOS Manchester United were fortunate to draw Olympiakos as on paper they were the weakest of the bunch. Manchester United have at least been pretty good in Europe so far, and in comparison with their league form, they should fancy their chances in this game. Word hasn’t spread in Europe that United are vulnerable so I think Olympiakos will pay them respect and not go for the jugular. By doing this United might just sneak the tie. 2-0 to United.
FA Cup Quarter Finals Saturday 8th March manchester city v Wigan
Brighton/hull city v sunderland
arsenal v everton
sheffield utd v sheffield Wednesday/charlton
A repeat of last years FA cup final where Wigan in the end won through. This year though Manchester City aren’t being managed by Mancini who seemed to do everything he could to lose. I will never get Mancini’s last year but ever there was a symbol of a boss thinking he was bigger than the club and wanting to prove a point, then Mancini’s last year was it. Weird. Pellegrini’s side however will make short work of Wigan this time at the Etihad and I can see them ending up as comfortable winners. I’ll go for a 2-0 win for Manchester City.
Arsenal reached this stage due to some slack finishing from Liverpool and the decisions of the ex South Yorkshire police sergeant that is Howard Webb. Everton will give their all and I can certainly see them having a go at Arsenal. This is the game of the round and I have a sneaking suspicion that as Martinez got Wigan to the final last year he can repeat the achievement in this. This game might be a draw though and it will go back to Everton. Arsenal 2 Everton 2.

If Hull will through preventing a reunion of Poyet and Brighton, then this should be an all premiership affair. Sunderland have been red hot in the cups this season and who can right them off in this one? With Borini and Adam Johnson all playing well then I think they’ll give Hull a game here. Sunderland will be concentrating on their League Cup final against Manchester City as well, so they might be distracted. Hull to win 1-0.
There’s a chance here of an all Sheffield tie and if Wednesday come through their tie with Charlton, then this should be a mouthwatering event. If Sheffield Wednesday come through the tie then I think they’d be favourites to win through to the semis. 0-1 to Wednesday.

MotoGP
2014MotoGP The 2014 MotoGP season will the 66th time the FIM Road Racing World Championship takes place. This year’s competition begins at Losail Circuit in Qatar on 23rd March. MotoGP hasn’t visited South America since 2004, but 10 years later there are a couple of new races (in Brazil and Argentina), while the Laguna Seca race has been stopped after 9 years of racing. There will be new rules on engine capabilities with the Factory class and the Open class. Each bike will be classed on their throttle mapping in a way to equalise the performance between the two classes and therefore bring a better overall race championship.
Marc Marquez
Marc Marquez is the main man and current reigning champion. Last year he took MotoGP by storm with his Honda bike for the Repsol Honda team and in doing so became the youngest ever MotoGP champion, winning in his first year of trying. His form continues preseason, as he tested the new bike 78
Carl Crutchlow
in Malaysia and broke through the two minute barrier. Honda will also want to maintain it’s domination of the MotoGp competition as they are defending manufacturer’s champions. Marquez’s teammate Dani Pedrosa will also be one to watch.
Valentino Rossi & Jorge Lorenzo
Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo (both former world champions) are team-mates in the Yamaha Factory Racing Team. The Factory option bikes have been trying to improve fuel consumption as they are currently at a litre of fuel for just 20 across the race.
Britain’s Bradley Smith will be worth looking out for, as will Carl Crutchlow who is now riding for Ducati. Ducati though haven’t won a race since 2010 and Crutchlow admits that it’s unlikely to be any different this year. Ducati themselves have said their new bike has “revised aerodynamics, both in the front and rear fairings, in addition to improved rider ergonomics and more possibilities for chassis adjustment, as well as several new electronic solutions.” Sounds good but whether it can end the dominance of Honda is doubtful.
As this is still early season, it will be interesting to find out just how fast the bikes are. In pre-season they are shrouded in secrecy as details like fuel loads and the like remain top secret.
Races of note here in Spain are Jerez on the 4th of May, Catalonia on the 15th of June, Aragon on the 21st of September and Valencia on the 9th of November. Silverstone is the 31st of August and Le Mans on the 18th of May.
MotoGP Race Calendar
With Rossi and Lorenzo switching teams to Yamaha, they will be the main threat to Honda and the Marquez/Pedrosa domination. If Yamaha have got their bike right, then this 2014 MotoGP season could be one of the closest and most exciting in living memory.
