NEWS LA BELLE MÈCHE AND DIPTYQUE REKINDLE THEIR OLD FLAME

B

ecause they deserve a better spot than a table corner or a shelf somewhere collecting dust, candles are about to come out of the shadows. The founders of “La Belle Mèche” are a young entrepreneur couple who have made it their goal to bring warmth and cosiness to homes everywhere. Hand-crafted and 100% made in France, coloured or perfumed, the “mèche” of this new brand serve more than a purely decorative function. The candles also honour tradition and are brought to you by Diptyque’s initiative to celebrate the Lights that illuminate India and Thaïland. Charmed by the poetic creations of the two designers behind Tsé & Tsé, Diptyque has decided to collaborate with Catherine Lévy and Segolène Prébois on a unique, seasonal collection of three perfumed candles, exotically named “Orange Chaya”, “Ecorce de Pin” (Pine Bark), and “Encens des Indes” (Indian incense). Let there be light.

G

n 1987, Bernard Nonancourt, head of the prestigious Laurent-Perrier champagne house, decides to start a vintage bearing the name of one of his two daughters. Twenty-six years later, the Alexandra rosé that was born from this initiative has only had 7 vintages, very little for an exceptional wine. The last cuvee dates back to 2004 and is now available. The best Champagne grapes and no less than 8 years of patience were necessary to allow this new vintage to deliver rich and subtle aromas.

et your fangs ready, vegetarians beware. The Beef Club is in session, inviting all carnivores. Yves-Maris Le Bourdonnec is in charge of the meat, the Experimental Cocktail Club takes care of the bar and British ancestors are to thank for the atmosphere. That’s the winning recipe that put this 1st arrondissement restaurant at the forefront of the “steakhouse trend” in Paris. Because it has garnered a solid following and a serious reputation, the Beef Club has had the great idea of publishing a recipe book for “meat connoisseurs, activists fighting for quality and taste”. From the appetizers all the way to desert -including cocktails-, the whole experience is a homage to fresh meat, with some greens thrown in for good measure.

CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM THE PETIT BALLON VINI VIDI VICI

B

ecause Christmas is close and accompanied by its customary lack of inspiration, Le Petit Ballon is taking over your holiday shopping. Sharing a good bottle of wine is nice, sharing it after giving it to someone is even better. The website understands this and suggests you purchase two subscriptions for Christmas, each coming with its “perfect wine-taster’s kit”. This way, bon-vivants will receive two bottles of wine each month, either the “Age de raison” selection or the “Bel Age” prestige package. To warm up on those cold winter days.

f the iPad mini delighted Apple fans last year, its younger, badder brother offers two improvements that will make you forget it existed. First of all, the sharpness of the retina screen offers a big step up in terms of visual comfort. Also, processing power that lacked on the first generation will now satisfy video game enthusiasts and those using memory intensive apps. Add to this list an advertised 10-hour battery life and you obtain an elegant and effective tablet, which would have achieved perfection had it been for the fingerprint scanner of the iPhone 5S. From 399 euros.

NEUILLY JUMPS ONBOARD THE ORIENT-EXTRÊME HOT SPOT

reat news for fans of Japanese cuisine: the very popular Orient-Extrême is now open in Neuilly. Already present in SaintGermain and Ave. Montaigne, the Black Code Group has chosen the west to set up shop, with specialties dished out by Chef Masa in an elegant setting designed by architect Aurélien Lespinas. In France, the Group’s restaurants have become top addresses so the company is looking to expand abroad. It’s second flagship restaurant will be called “Kinugawa” and is about to launch in Belgium and Lebanon, with a shop due to open in 2014 in Brussels and 2015 in Beyrouth for amateurs of fine Japanese cuisine.

hoosing the right fabric, selecting the right size, assorting colors, knowing how to choose the best outfit for any occasion… These are a few things that men aren’t particularly known for in the mind of the collective consciousness. But a few good men are here to change this. On one hand we have Serge Massignan, author of the cult-blog “Comme un camion”, created “by a man, for men” in 2004, and on the other hand Geoffrey Bruyère and Benoit Wotjenka, whose advice is available on the “Bonne Gueule” website. Call it coincidence or blame it on the autumn

crisis, but all three have decided to publish their style guides a few days apart. The pioneering men’s blogger has chosen to discuss everyday issues (job interviews, seduction tips for men…), while his competitors have emphasized their keen attention to detail. Bound by a simple and antifashion writing style, “The stylish man’s guide… even for unshaven men” written by the founders of Bonne Gueule and the “The guide to men’s fashion” by Sere Massignan, relaxes and reassures men everywhere, dressing them for winter.

Bleu de chauffe :

A HISTORY OF WORK BAGS Workwear, craftsmanship, authenticity and ecology are the core values that Bleu de chauffe stands for. Since 2010, the young company has been tranforming work bags into fashion accessories made in France. Text: Sophie Hantraye Photos: Bleu de chauffe and Romain B. James

T

he brand’s designers have drawn upon sepia visions of a distant past for inspiration. Bleu de chauffe exudes authenticity and a construction quality seemingly long gone. Initially worn by steam locomotive drivers, later becoming the emblematic garment of the working class, the “bleu de chauffe” – overalls in English – open a nostalgic window through time. It’s a passion for workwear rather than memories of naphthalene that led Thierry Batteux and Alexandre Rousseau to start their own leather goods brand. Inspired by plumbers, postmen, doctors, their minimalist design and familiar lines remind us of a classic work ethic and spirit. Bleu de chauffe’s revisited work bags are becoming modern classics. The designers’ French touch turned traditional bags into fashion accessories, their craftsmanship makes each piece unique.

sign their work of art. This is how the brand pays tribute to authenticity, a value it holds so dear, and to its skilled workforce and quality leather, both sourced locally in France. Just like the red, white and blue, Bleu de chauffe also cares about ecology and the leather used in its bags. The leather is tanned using vegetal, natural agents such as chestnut or acacia, and used water is purified so it can return in due time to its source, promises kept. A promise is made to the public as well. Born in 2010, Bleu de chauffe has seen its collections grow and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the modern men & women who are not left on the side-lines, and of modern times, a value that it also cherishes. The brand is deeply-rooted in traditional values but does not live in the past, modernity is also a key ingredient in its design direction and its product offering. Today, the classic “plumber’s” bag sits next to the iPad case, local know-how is exported internationally, and so are traditions and quality.

THE SCOTT BAG Bleu de chauffe is a recent brand but counts enough fans for one of them to commission a unique piece for a friend’s birthday: a leather bag. After racking his brains and searching, Evan finds what he is looking for – in a picture. Next to marks of wear and tear, a trace of the owner identifies him by name “Scott Fitzgerald”. Inspired by the bag, Evan wants to personalize a similar one for a writer friend of his He turns to Bleu de chauffe to create this perfect gift. Although the brand can’t immediately help Evan, the idea matures in the brain of its two designers, and the Bleu de chauffe Scott bag is born. With minimalist lines, well-positioned straps, and initials engraved in the leather, Fitzgerald’s new bag sports a toasted colour and a heavy dose of nostalgia.

FASHION, ENGLISH-STYLE: ALEX EMBEREY Head of Inbound Marketing & Site Performance at Shopstyle Europe, Alex Emberey is constantly surrounded by fashion. Shopstyle’s aim is to make the online shopping process easier, by bringing together thousands of products from a huge range of retailers in one place so you can search for your perfect match. As a result, Alex knows exactly what people are searching for and buying at any point in time. With this kind of insider knowledge, it’s no surprise that he has the reputation of taking fashion risks and staying ahead of the curve. But what makes this self-confessed “clothes fan” tick? I’m lucky enough to live in a really culturally diverse city, and there is inspiration everywhere. I live in East London, the home of street style, top designers, and amazing bars. And people there experiment, which definitely influences my look – I need to stand out! But I also really respect the heritage we have in this city and across the UK; Savile Row, the leather industry, historic

one too. But it’s more interesting to see which brands resonate with our users, especially when it comes to sportswear and denim. Sometimes I’ll discover a new label I had never come across before, especially through our international sites. That’s the joy of working across the EU, I get an insight into what’s bubbling up in France, Germany and the UK. You work in an office with a lot of women, does that affect the way you dress for work ? I’ve been surrounded by stylish women all my life so it doesn’t make too much difference. I’m perhaps at my most adventurous at Shopstyle, because nothing fazes them, but I wear what I want to wear regardless of who I’m working with! As much as you should dress appropriately for the position you’re in, I don’t think you should let your colleagues dictate your look on a day to day basis. That said, if they ribbed me too much about any one item I might reserve it for weekends only ! Aside from fashion, what makes you tick ? I’m an adventurer. I can’t stay at home in front of the TV like some people, I like to be doing stuff, seeing friends, eating great food. If you’re a creative person the only way you can keep coming up with new ideas is to actually go out there and experience things. Not necessarily travelling or spending loads of money - some of the best places I’ve discovered were right on my doorstep – but just being out there !

OPINION COLUMN

Opinion column by Jean-Michel Deluc

IN THE CELLAR AND IN THE KITCHEN A DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS Master Sommelier of France since 1991, and former Head Sommelier of the Ritz in Paris and the Café Royal in London, Jean-Michel Deluc, the implacable winetaster, is now the emblematic sommelier at petitballon. com, having founded and worked for the site chateauonline.fr and the Repaire de Bacchus boutiques. He is also a trainer, a teacher, and the author of the 2012 edition of “Livre de Cave” from Editions Grund.

A

s Christmas draws near, our taste buds are getting ready and we are already dreaming of delicate Bordeaux and Champagne scents emanating from crystal glasses given to us by Grandma. Last night, I dreamt of a different Christmas. Why not vary our drinking habits and look elsewhere amongst our sublime French regions for divine beverages to accompany the celebration of the divine child. L et’s start with the foie gras: A Sauterne of course! Indeed, but have you tasted the exotic freshness of a Jurançon, the honeyed charm of a Monbazillac, the floral elegance of a Coteaux du Layon, or the smooth traits of a late-harvested Alsace wine; And how about a Christmas beer, have you dared try? Oysters deserve a great Pessac Léognan or a Chablis, but why not flatter them with an interesting ethereal Quincy, a delightfully invigorating white Bergerac, or a Cassis with a scent of marine air. And a Moselle wine! Yes, a Moselle wine, fine yet thirst-quenching, would be a great association with the shellfish’s iodine. The crustaceans will definitely enjoy your Meursault, but they’ll spark up with an enchanting Savennière, a troubling Chignin-Bergeron or a voluptuous white Hermitage. As for Bandol rosé, it was almost forgotten with the wintry weather. Turkeys and capons will go hand in hand with a SaintEmilion Grand Cru or a Chambolle Musigny. But they’ll lose their feathers for a Côte de Duras, an Irouleguy, a Chinon, Collioure or a red Côte de Provence. Don’t forget the tender yet vigorous Moulin à Vent!

Game will sneak out of the woods for a Pommard, a Chambertin or a Pauillac. But they will be sublimed by a Collioure, a Pic-Saint-Loup or a quality Cahors. As for Madiran, it’s been known to ennoble many a stew, just like Cornas. And the cheeses! You need as many wines as there are cheeses. Do not keep the best wines for the occasion, instead try interesting combinations like Roquefort and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Fourme d’Ambert and vintage Porto, Camembert and Fronton, chèvre and Côtes de Gascogne, Maroilles and Abbey beer, Livarot and sweet cider from the Auge region. Guaranteed rapture. Desserts and the infamous French bûche (Christmas “log”) are a real hazard! Stay away from Champagne. Inappropriate! For chocolate? Get the best of it with Rivesaltes and its shades of tile-red, or Banyuls Hors d’Age, without forgetting a coffee liqueur. For a dessert with fruits? Muscat de Mireval, from Saint-Jean du Minervois, and don’t forget the greek Samos Grand Cru as well as a Bonnezeaux, Saussignac and the legendary straw wine from Jura.

‘‘The world of wines is rich in flavours, names, regions with their own specificities.’’

The world of wines is rich in flavours, names, regions with their own specificities. Plenty of places to travel to during the holidays. Plenty to fill conversations with. Glasses will sparkle with ruby or topaz hues, your eyes will be filled with stars and your taste buds will remember forever this different Christmas.

OPINION COLUMN

Opinion column by Sylvain Loosli

POKER FACE THE BIG BLUFF Sylvain Loosli, French 26 year old poker player, did the impossible by making it to the final Table of the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas. This is the most difficult poker tournament in the world. He reveals his secrets for The Menlook Tribune and teaches us what bluffing is all about…

T

«

he most important in poker is not the cards, it’s what you do with the cards”, goes the expression. Of course, the game is subject to chance and the laws of distribution, but poker is above all a question of selfcontrol and mind control over others.

For the past three years I’ve been playing in professional circles, just enough time to distinguish good and bad plays, weak players and strong ones, bluff and sincerity. Bluff is certainly the noblest form of deception that exists. That’s because it’s an integral part of the game, it’s what players must detect in others, and it can only be performed well when you have ultimate selfcontrol. Being able to bluff at the right time means that you can win hands even when you don’t have good cards. In life as in poker, bluff is an essential skill that some are good at and others are not.

not attempt to bluff Sylvain Loosli. It’s important to read your opponents, but you must not forget that they also are trying to read you. When I’m bluffing, I always try to choose the right moment and seem relaxed. Just before the dinner break for example, there is a moment when the players are less focused on the game and don’t necessarily want to get into a complicated hand. You also have to dose your bluff wisely: bluff is like alcohol, when you use too much of it, you lose all credibility and self-control. That’s why you have to know how to adapt to different situations. As in love for example. A normal, healthy relationship is based on trust and honesty but bluffing with humour and parsimony can prove to be just as useful as in the casino. In professional life, also, like those two days when I had to pretend to be a “senior executive” in the company I was working for. The first commandment of bluffing is to never lose faith in your own con. Fake business cards in hand, speech well prepared, I pretended to be my boss. One of my best stunts ever.

‘‘The bluff is like alcohol, when you use too much of it, you lose all credibility.’’

The best targets are the players who cling on to every hand and the players who are “weak”. During the last Winamax open in Dublin, I was able to win two hands after noticing that an Italian player had shivered. I won those two hands because of his poor bluffing and my tricky raises. You must be able to spot the physical “tells”, signs that a player is bluffing. The reactions of players are also important, when you ask them a question for example or when you stare at them with a fixed smile. First commandment: thou shall

Trickery has its perks: the ability to live off of a passion, travel the world, and feel free every day.

HOW TO TIE YOUR SCARF WITH STYLE ?

I

MEN’S FASHION FROM THE NORTH

S

candinavian fashion has been quite the revelation these past few years, attracting increasingly more disciples from men’s’ fashion. Flashback on this particular style, somewhere between simple design and northern authenticity. After conquering the planet with its irreproachable furniture design and prices defying any competition, Scandinavians had warned us that they were the experts in simple aesthetics, minimalist and niche styles. Watch out.

ndispensible accessory when it’s cold out, tying a scarf can’t be taken lightly. With the cold weather fast approaching, The Menlook Tribune gives you an overview of the four basic scarf-tying principles. For some it’s a simple protection against the elements, for others it’s a true fashion accessory. The man’s scarf is perfect for easily completing an outfit: from the darkest to the most cheerful, scarves come in a multitude of colors and motifs and provide a touch of whim while minimizing any risk of faux-pas. Even for those prone to catching colds, with your heavy wool or cashmere scarves, it’s important to properly tie them around your neck. Simplicity is key, you don’t need to be a marine knot expert to figure it out.

JONATHAN LAMBERT’S 10 CHRISTMAS TWEETS Punchline virtuoso and master of words, Johathan Lambert crusades for humour, on TV or on stage. For Christmas, the french humorist gives us an insight into his caustic humour in less than 140 characters.

#HitUsWithYourBestJoke 1 • If it’s Asian children making Christmas toys, don’t give them a present, that’ll be one less for them to make.

2 • Santa Claus reminds me of a horrible pimple: fat, red and white

3 • A beanie and a beard: Is Santa the ultimate hipster?

4 • Think of that moment when you open a present, you’re told you can exchange it but you don’t dare ask for the purchase receipt…

5 • If kids born on December 25th are called “Noël” then why can’t those born on November 11th be called “Armistice” – what’s wrong with this picture?

6 • I can’t stand Christmas trees with blinking lights, I never know if they’re turning left or right

7 • At Christmas there’s always a drunk unkle… and 9 months later an inbred cousin

*Jonathan Lambert’s DVD comes out on December 4th and he’s on tour everywhere in France!

8 • My dad told me that he was getting an orange for Christmas and my son asked for an iPhone. I got him a plan with Orange to keep things fair.
