MAYOR’S MESSAGE It’s hard to believe we’re still living in this COVID-19 world where we wear masks and physical distance. In spring, we thought it would be over by summer. Now, it’s December - almost a whole year of canceled events, postponed summer vacations, and school starting online. Our holidays may look a little different, too. But, I’m happy to say our sense of community never wavered, and not all was lost this year. City staff hauled more than 140 tons of items during our residential large-item pickup, the Merriam Community Center continues to see an increase in membership, and two Merriam police officers are in remission from cancer and back on duty. Let’s hope 2021 brings us more success with life, at work, and in our community. Your Mayor,
Ken Sissom

Merriam Receives Sustainability Grants
8 Ways to Be Sustainable
The Mid-America Regional Council awarded the City two grants to help plan the future of Merriam Drive and Merriam Lane. The grants will allow the City to work with residents and property owners to look at land uses, traffic, and street design in two phases.
▶ Apply for an Exterior Home Improvement or Residential Sustainability Grant and get solar panels for your home.
The first phase will focus on Merriam Drive from Johnson Drive to Waterfall Park. The second phase focuses on Merriam Drive and Merriam Lane between Waterfall Park and Southwest Boulevard. Merriam partnered with Overland Park and Unified Government of Wyandotte County for the second phase, with Overland Park leading the project. These grants are a great opportunity to look at how to enhance one of Merriam’s main entrance points and roadways.
▶ Compost food scraps. Check out Compost Collective KC at compostcollectivekc.com to get started. ▶ Recycle curbside or find drop-off services at recyclespot.org. ▶ Convert household lightbulbs to LED. ▶ Take part in the City’s Tree Sale and plant a tree on your property. Visit merriam.org/treesale for more information. ▶ Build a rain garden, plant native trees, or get a rain barrel to help reduce stormwater runoff. The City’s Stormwater Program provides a 50% match up to $2,250. Learn more at merriam.org/stormwater. ▶ Use RideKC Micro Transit to share a lift with local riders. Merriam Town Center is now a featured destination. ▶ Recycle glass with Glass Bandit or drop off in the purple Ripple Glass bin at IKEA.

Meet Saky Volavongsa
Saky Volavongsa grew up in Laos and moved to Merriam 34 years ago with her husband and five children. She worked at the KU Medical Center for 30 years before retiring. Saky loves to fish at Shawnee Mission Park.
What do you like about Merriam?
I love living in Merriam. It’s close to parks and stores. I like the farmers’ market. I love our Merriam Public Works Department. They keep our streets clean during the winter snowfall. Merriam has beautiful hanging flower baskets, and the best is the citywide cleanup.
Why did you plant roots in Merriam?
I wanted to live in Johnson County, and I wanted my kids to go to the Shawnee Mission School District. The district had a good reputation. Merriam had affordable housing for our budget back in 1986 and still has a good market for first-time homebuyers.
How has Merriam changed since when you first moved here? Merriam has improved a lot: the parks, the walking trail, the streets improvement, and new development like IKEA and the new community center.
What’s your favorite thing to do?
I like to do gardening, visiting with my friendly neighbors, and going to neighborhood block parties.
What’s your favorite spot in Merriam?
The Turkey Creek walking trail. It’s safe and clean – full of nature. I love the trees along the trail.
Anything else?
The City of Merriam Police Department makes me and my family feel safe. Thank you to all the city workers for keeping Merriam a great place to live and raise kids. 6 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION
Comprehensive Plan Update
Work continues on the City’s new comprehensive land use plan – Merriam Comprehensive Plan 2040. Resident feedback through community surveys and online comments was invaluable in helping us get to the next step. The City now enters Phase 3 of the Comp Plan – to draft a plan and evaluation with the Comprehensive Advisory Committee. Residents can stay updated on the process and provide their input at merriam2040.org.
New City Website
A new year – a new city website! We’re building a new website that will become your digital front door to Merriam City Hall 24 hours a day. You’ll still find details about city events and services at merriam.org – but it’ll be easier to use and navigate. It’s also mobile-friendly and ADA accessible. We’ll launch a beta test site in December and will ask for your feedback. Look for the new website to fully launch by spring 2021.
Watch Out for Snowplow Trucks Winter is right around the corner and that means our Public Works crews will work hard to get our streets ready for the snow season. Please give snowplow truck drivers room to do their job! ▶ Slow down when you see a snowplow truck.
▶ Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the snowplow – about the length of three school buses – so you can have more time to react in bad conditions.
See Merriam's snow plowing progress at merriam.org/snow.
▶ Don’t stop too close – the trucks may spread de-icing materials that could hit your vehicle. You could also be in the driver’s blind spot.
▶ Use extreme caution if you have to pass a snowplow truck. The front plow may be wider than the lane it’s in. ▶ Be patient and stay out of their way.

Merriam Police Officer Beats Cancer, Returns to Duty In January 2019, Merriam Police Officer Phil Lewis was diagnosed with colon cancer. This October, the 17-year police veteran put on his uniform for the first time in 22 months.
“Being healthy enough to return to work is the one last step that made me feel like my life was officially back to normal,” Lewis said. Lewis said he’s ready to serve our residents once again. He knows people may wonder why he wanted to come back after all this time – when there’s now COVID-19 and social unrest across the country. Lewis said it’s a simple reason. “I love being a police officer, and I’m not done yet,” Lewis said. “I have a debt to repay to the law enforcement community, the Merriam Police Department, and the citizens of Merriam for all they have done for me. I can’t just walk away from that.” Read more about his story at merriam.org.
Birthday Parades
Two Officers Honored with Metro Chiefs Association, Merriam Police Department Life Saving Awards Officers Jared Ruby and Brandon Bates received Life Saving Awards from the Metro Chiefs Association and the Merriam Police Department for their quick action that helped save lives in two separate incidences. The officers performed CPR and used an AED to help the victims – both who suffered from cardiac arrest. The two victims made full recoveries. “It feels good to receive these awards, but, more importantly, I’m glad I could make a difference for the family,” Ruby said.
Let the Merriam Police Department help celebrate your child’s birthday. Officers will drive by your home with lights and sirens blaring! Contact Capt. Chris Brokaw at 913-322-5566 or cbrokaw@merriam.org to schedule a police parade. 8 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION

Time Capsule Found at Former Community Center It’s not every day a piece of history more than 100 years old is discovered. But, that’s exactly what happened in August when construction crews removed the 1911 cornerstone from the former Irene B. French Community Center. As crews worked to preserve the cornerstone, they found a tiny tin box inside the concrete casing. The tin box was a time capsule set during the Merriam Grade School’s dedication on June 27, 1911. The decomposed box contained signatures of students and residents who attended the event and a “Laws Relating to the Common Schools of Kansas” pamphlet from 1909. Some attendees were related to David Gee Campbell. Campbell is credited with establishing Merriam – originally Campbellton – in 1864. See below for more fun facts about residents who attended the ceremony.
FACTS ABOUT ATTENDEES ▶ Fred Reiger: Owned the Merriam Bakery at 57th St. between Kessler Lane and Merriam Drive. The building burned down, but Fred rebuilt his bakery a little farther south.
▶ Charles Loomis was a well-known figure in Merriam. He was a retired physician and served as vice president at Shawnee State Bank for 45 years. Married to Viola Loomis, Charles also served as the the Merriam School Board treasurer. The Loomis property is now located on the National Register of Historic Places at 8325 Johnson Drive. ▶ Campbell Family Tree: James M. Campbell was the son
▶ Merriam School’s architect has a grandson living in Bucyrus, Kansas, named Jack. 10 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION
of founder David Gee Campbell. James owned a store in Merriam and was very active in the community. James was the father of Marie and Blanche Campbell, also present at the dedication ceremony. Marie was a Bell telephone operator for 36 years, even manning the lines during the floods of 1914 and 1935. Marie was later known as the “Queen of Historic Merriam.” She passed away in 1994, one week before her 100th birthday.
▶ The 1911 school was the first “superior school” in Johnson County housing both a grade and high school. When Shawnee Mission High School was built in 1922, Merriam School became a grade school. Increased enrollment forced the building of Crestview School in 1952, and when another Merriam grade school was built in 1969, the building was shut down. It was then used by the Johnson County Community College and the Kansas City Christian School until the City bought it in 1988, revamping it into the community center. –Historic Merriam book excerpt

In the fitness area, alternating pieces of equipment will be closed and floor markings have been added to meet physical distancing guidelines of at least 6 feet. Floor markings have also been added to the fitness room floor to provide 10 to 12 feet between participants. Throughout the facility, additional floor markings have been added anywhere that patrons may be required to line up.
Cleaning Protocols
MCC staff has a detailed plan to separate clean and used equipment – from the pens you use to sign any paperwork to weights, strength equipment, and cardio gear. We will frequently clean and disinfect our building and sanitize hightouch areas.
Aquatics
Swim lessons and classes will have a limited number of participants to allow for physical distancing. Masks are required on the pool deck when you’re not in the water.
Child Watch
Child Watch won't be offered until the State of Kansas enters the Phase Out stage of the Ad Astra Reopening Plan.
Rental Space
Birthday party packages and rental space won't be offered at this time. Visit merriam.org/rentals for more information on future rentals. *This is our COVID-19 plan as of now, but we’ll make any necessary changes as we evaluate the community center. Visit merriam.org/mcc for policy updates.
WINTER 2020 + SPRING 2021 ▶ 19
Parks & Rec ▶ Aquatics Meet Cole Surber AQUATICS SUPERVISOR
Cole Surber is the Merriam Community Center’s aquatics supervisor. Before working at the MCC, Cole worked as the aquatics director at the Miami County YMCA and as an aquatics coordinator at the Durham, North Carolina, YMCA. Cole graduated from Wichita State University and is happy to be back in the Kansas City area. In his spare time, you can find Cole watching sports, playing cards, or trying out local breweries.
You’re now in charge of the new MCC pools. What’s that like?
It’s exciting! We’re able to provide this really cool and new service to Merriam residents and visitors. Having an indoor pool for the first time in the City is a great feature.
What do you do on a typical day?
On any typical day, you can find me cleaning the pool, checking chemicals, teaching swim lessons, training lifeguards, preparing for new programs, or lifeguarding. It can be unpredictable, but I like that my day isn’t cookie-cutter.
Why should people sign up for a swim class or lessons at the MCC? Our swim lessons and classes are designed and built for the community and are constantly evolving and growing to best serve the people who use them. If you’re looking for personalized swim lessons, whether you have a 6-month-old or are 60 and looking to learn for the first time, we have tailored programs to meet your needs.
What new aquatic programs are coming to the MCC?
We have some cool water fitness classes that are just getting kicked off – such as Aqua Zumba and an interval fitness class. Junior Dolphins is a new program that will be a pre-swim team lesson designed for those who are interested in being on the summer swim team. They’ll get a chance to learn from Merriam Dolphins coaches.
What are some fun amenities at the indoor pool?
Our indoor pool features a four-lane, 25-yard lap pool, lazy river, zero-entry, and activity play area. We have several water features that spray water that the kids love to see. Kids also love the depth charge button that forces air through a vent in the pool and makes a big splash. We also have two super popular slides.
Anything else?
My goal is that everyone who comes to swim here leaves safe and happy. I hope you come check out our new facility and indoor pool!

For preschool and youth lessons, class levels are used to ensure your child is successful. Children are evaluated at the beginning of each session and placed in the appropriate class level. Children should be able to work with an instructor and participate in swim lessons independently and willingly.

Refund / Cancellation / Transfer
The City of Merriam Parks and Recreation Department prides itself on providing first-class recreational opportunities. Although patrons desire to attend all sessions for which they are registered, there may be circumstances that prevent them from completing programs. Recognizing the need to assist in these situations, programs, memberships, and rental refunds will be handled per the policy posted on the website and available at the Merriam Community Center (MCC). Administration reserves the right to review and alter policies as needed. Policy changes and notifications will be provided in writing on the website and posted at the MCC welcome desk. Facility users are expected to respect MCC property and fellow users. Destruction of property, profanity, and abusive behavior won't be tolerated. Violators will be asked to leave the facility, and repeat offenders will have privileges permanently revoked. The use of tobacco products is prohibited in the MCC and within 10 feet of all entrances. The MCC isn't staffed to provide individual child supervision. Please don't drop children off and leave them unattended. Children eight and under must be accompanied by a responsible person age 14 or older. No person under the age of 16 is allowed to participate in, or attend, adult fitness classes.
